DG Message - Dil Se

Dear Friends Wishing you all a very happy Diwali and a prosperous new year !!! September and October indeed have been hectic but exciting months. Virtually a daily up and down to Pune for the Official Club Visits. My car service centre fellow was astounded as to how the car comes for servicing every month, 10,000 kms of driving every month, he indeed asked me, Sir is your vehicle now a taxi …? The visits have been inspiring, I could see the way Presidents have motivated all the club members and surely the level of work is going notches higher. The visit of RC of Pune Bibwewadi was amazing, a small growing club, innovative in its style organised the visit to thebeautiful ISKON temple at Kondwa, we had a lovely tour of the temple and the visit was in a colourful attire of traditional wear by all the members. Incidentally, the entire club donated to TRF on that

day. Similarly the visit to Bhigwan was also very fruitful; this club also became a 100 % donor club to TRF. RC of Pune Synergy also has decided to contribute handsomely to TRF with huge commitments coming through from the club and the entire club has committed to donate to TRF. Another club whose visit was significant and worth remembering was of a new club RC Pristine. This is a club which will go a long way in the District. The presentations made were awesome and the thought process in building the club is immaculate. Another club which is performing very quietly is RC Khadki and the potential to take the giant leap is obviously there, possibly a Global Grant Project can just propel this club to massive heights. The first new club of this year was chartered last month RC of Roha Central with 32 members and another 12 in the pipeline. The profile base of this club is indeed very strong and the efforts taken by PP Dr Rajiv Gokhale as GSR from RC Goregaon and District Membership Extention Chair PP Ganesh Mhatre is commendable in starting this club on a sound footing. The District Youth Seminar was an exciting event organized by RC Pune East and the District Youth Team. The energy of the Rotaractors and the Interactors showed in their powerful performances and the Fellowship

hosted by the host club members led by President Sangeeta Maniar was relishing. DGE Ravee Dhotre hosted his first Pre-Pets of Zone 3 and 4 and surely it was a amazing event hosted by RC Sarasbagh, My best wishes to DGE Ravee and his torch bearer President Elects for their planning to make Rotary Year 2019-20 a great success. By the time the next GML is received by you, we will have hosted the biggest cricketing fellowship in India. 31 teams across the nation and about 450 Rotarians will be playing cricket across 8 cricket grounds in Pune and this will surely be one of the highlights of 2018-19. As the journey continues in the month of November we look forward to more exciting things happening in the District, till then Au Revoir. DG Dr Shailesh Palekar

District Youth Seminar - Energetic and with good takeaways The District Youth Seminar went on to a kicking start on 7th October 2018 at the Annabhau Sathe Auditorium with the strong presence of Rotary family and Rotary Youth Exchange students. The Host Club, Rotary Club of Pune East had made painstaking arrangements for the smooth conduct of the event. Beat boxing in the corridor before the start of the programme by Master Malhar Mane set the mood for what was in store for the day. After the lighting of the lamp by DG and other dignitaries, Rtn Niraj Mehta, Director, Youth, explained that the purpose of the Seminar was to share the progress made by the various Youth committees, and to encourage the youngsters and accompanying teachers about their roles and responsibilities. DG Rtn. Dr. Shailesh motivated the audience in his inimitable style while stressing on the powerful role played by youth and the youth committee in the Rotary movement. The keynote speaker Lt. Col. Dharamdatt Goel showed the pathway to success through will power and mental strength. He recalled anecdotes of grim events on the battlefield and how he overcame hurdles as he had confidence in himself. Guest speaker Rtn. Sanjay Takle, motor sport car rally champion, also kept the audience spellbound while narrating to Rtr. Swati Dwibhashyam about his adrenaline packed passion for racing. Surely many young hearts were motivated by these heroes. Interactors and Rotaractors displayed their acting prowess and brought the house down with applause as they enacted skits on various themes like women empowerment, the dangers of plastic, farmers’ suicide, traffic awareness, etc. Rotaractors dedicated their skits to the memory of Late DRS Ojas Apte. Three panel discussions were held to discuss the status of Youth activities in the district : on Interact moderated by Youth Chair Rtn. Divakaran Pillai, on Rotaract by Rtn. Niraj Mehta, and on RYLA by Rtn. Swapnil Mane. The RYE presentation was made by RYE Director Rtn. Deepak Bodhani followed by the heart-warming and

vivacious performances by the Inbound students and presentations by the outbound students on their experiences in other countries. The NGSE team led by Dist. Director Rtn. Subodh Malpani gave much needed information on their activities and how the programme helped to build better international understanding. Besides, there was the grand launch of the Facebook page of ‘Rotary Youth 3131 - India’ with the click of a button. Many hands worked tirelessly to make the event a grand success. Convenor Rtn. Sunil Shah, Host Club Youth Director, Rtn. Sahil Shaha, President Rtn. Sangeeta Maniyar and each and every Rtn. and Ann of Rotary Club of Pune East guided by District Secretary Rtn. Manjoo Phadke and the District Youth team prepared the formula for a great Seminar. In short, a very well organized event, with sumptuous food, great music, graceful dances, motivating speeches and attendance in good numbers by Interactors and Rotaractors from Pune, Khopoli, Indapur and Daund. Cervical Cancer Vaccination - A Stich In Time Saves .... Lives A 23 year old girl, sparkling eyes with hopes of better tomorrow, died of Cervical Cancer in a hospital a few years ago and this moved me and Shobana, states our DG. The couple belonging to medical fraternity and Dr Shobhana being practicing Gynaec were aware of the statistics, vaccines with its limitations .. for prevention of this disease. After many rounds of brain storming sessions and study, connect with the vaccine manufacturing companies this ‘DREAM PROJECT of our DG’ was conceived. The Statistic says every 8th minute a woman dies of this dreadful disease due to Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) and therefore, which is definitely preventable. WHO recommends cervical cancer prevention through vaccines and awareness. And then in Jan 2018, the opportunity to serve the Mankind knocked my doors. DG wanted me to lead this project !! The planning meetings geared up, meticulous planning was needed to address the numerous challenges like Vitamin ‘M’ , high cost of the vaccines (Rs4000 per dose and which has 2 dose regime), identifying the beneficiaries, a wide range of awareness activities for schools, parents and students, involvement of medical staff and doctors. DG has set the Bar to 20,000 girls at Rs 1750/per dose (already negotiated), we can only imagine the funds required to fructify the project. To tide over this, our DG came up with a brilliant idea of raising funds through Global Grant Tool and making this as Synergy project of our district, where all 132 clubs will participate.. Leading by example, DG Dr Shailesh set the ball rolling. In various District events we interacted with Presidents 18 - 19 and District officers. After I found that they were all fired up to

take up the challenging social cause. Interested Primary club presidents were requested to get the Board approval for this project and the search for International partners started. Simultaneously match making process of Primary and Secondary clubs commenced. Getting an International partner becomes a challenge many times but I appealed to all clubs who wished to do a GG project to please be in connect with the District Senior Leaders, and also appealed to Rotarians who travel abroad to visit at least one Rotary Club abroad, make presentation and make friends in getting a partner for GG in future !! Heartening to mention that Rotary Club Of Pune Laxmi Road was ahead of times and completed the process in April 2018 and uploaded the grant form. RCPLR carries the honour of doing several Global Grant Projects with great commitment and passion. RC Germantown was quick to come on board and became their partner. R.C

Of Germantown (Dist 6800) was their partner for earlier two grants. RCPLR has 10 secondary clubs. (3 from Rural) The grant got sanctioned in month of Aug. and in Sept. 2018 our DG Dr. Shailesh flagged off the Project!! Till now with RCP Laxmi Road, RC Bavdhan, RC Deccan Gymkhana, RC Sports City and RC Goregaon total 1,000 girls were vaccinated in the first phase. RC Pashan, Karvenagar, Baner, Hillside, Bhor and Chakan Airport will take the drive soon. RC Pune East and RC Poona Downtown. RC Metro, RC Pune Central

and RC Parvati and RC Shivajinagar along with 3 clubs from Panvel are set to upload the grant applications. About 40 - 50 clubs have agreed to be secondary partners!! In this entire process I witnessed the matching passion and interest, relentless work, follow up and commitment from fellow Rotarians like Rtn Sudin Apte, Rtn Parag Muley and District Secretary Rtn Manjoo Phadke. I express my sincere gratitude to all of them. Friends, we in Rotary believe raising money is no hurdle when our focus, commitment, passion, direction and CAUSE is a RIGHT ONE!! Slowly and steadily we are marching towards our goal and that is something to smile about.

Vocational Excellence Award to Ex Marcos Praveen Teotia by Rotary Club of Pune Karvenagar The real hero and iron man Rotary’s Vocational excellence award. RC Pune Karvenagar is the first one from Rotary world to felicitate him, we feel proud of same.

A real time hero of 26 / 11 terrorist attack on Taj Hotel Mumbai Ex Marcos Praveen Teotia was presented ‘Vocational Excellence Award’ at the hands of Dr. Shailesh Palekar on 15th Oct 2018 at MES College, Pune. Shri. Bharat Vankate, Secretary Maharashtra Education Society Pune was the Guest of Honour. Mr. Praveen Teotia was the first commando to face the terrorists inside Taj Hotel, in the process he neutralized two terrorists and saved life of over 150 guests including foreigners. He got four bullets, one tore off his ear and other three on his chest and abdomen damaging part of his lungs permanently. After this attack Navy relieved him from rolls, due to hearing disability and damaged lungs. He is honoured with ‘Shaurya Chakra’ by Government of India. Notwithstanding his loss of job and pride he took upon himself to develop his fitness to overcome this shock. Gradually he developed his stamina to run Half marathon then 12 full marathons in different cities. World took his notice when in September 2017 he completed 72 Kms. run at Khardungla pass at a height of 18,380 feet in 12.5 hours, where even a fit person faces challenge of even normal walking. He has completed Iron Man competition in South Africa which consists of 3.8 kms. swimming, 180 Kms. of cycling and 42.2 kms. of running all back to back. He is going to repeat this at Malaysia in November 2018. He is also aiming to reach Everest one day. For medical science, his survival is a miracle but his grit, determination, overcoming physical limitations and attempting Iron Man competition successfully is all amazing and a good reason to invite him as guest lecturer for students to listen to his life story and struggle which is very motivating and eye opening and present him

pulse

Some excerpts of his speech on the occasion of Vocational Excellence award as take home points especially for students. 1. A certificate is just a piece of paper with black ink, it does not define what you are and what you shall become in life. 2. When we inflate air in a balloon, it goes up. Hard work and the attitude is the air which we can inflate in life to rise higher up. 3. Choose a trustworthy mentor in life from the same field where you wish to excel. It is the intensity of your wish which will lead you to a good mentor. 4. Leave bad friends who criticize and mock at you and choose five better friends who are equal or better than you who will support and guide you. 5. ‘Sustaining’ (not just attempting) is key to success which comes out of hard work. 6. Comparison is dangerous, important is to learn new things each day and improve your performance. 7. Strength and weakness are two sides of the same coin. One shines,

the dark side is weakness which you have to identify, accept and work towards overcoming it. 8. In failures, do not find a scapegoat or blame someone, do not shy away from the responsibility. Introspection and correction will take you ahead. Face the situation. 9. Allegations inhibit your scope of improvement as you have already declared the verdict, 10. Hard work is not optional, the day you start doing less hard work, you start losing. A hard working competitor will move ahead by another day or weeks. 11. Do not limit your performance by variable targets and cutoffs but focus on 100%. A student got 74 marks out of 100, the cutoff on the admission was 76. He kept telling all that he fell short just by two marks. Actually he fell short by 26 marks not 2. If you want to succeed, look at gap of 26 not 2. 12. Dreams never come true by dreaming alone, it is the hard work, training and commitment that brings results. Keep a focused goal, it will drive the brain for fulfilling goal, it will tune your body and mind to resonate to the goal. You need to practice and will power to do that. 13. Life is not a straight-line, ups and downs shall be there. Pain is a partner of life and you cannot avoid it. Solution is to ‘stay put’. Stay around. 14.Difference between Success and failure is difference between 99.9% and 100%, overdo the efforts sincerely, success will be at your feet. Really the golden words from the real hero and iron man. By President Shirish Puranik and Rtn Shirish Mandsorwale Rotary Club of Pune Karvenagar

The Rotary Foundation to change lives During the past 100 years, the Foundation has spent $3 billion on lifechanging, sustainable projects.

Rotary Foundation Mission

The mission is to enable Rotarians to advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through the improvement of health, the support of education, and the alleviation of poverty.

Why should one donate to The Rotary Foundation?

Your donation makes a difference to those who need our help most. More than 90 percent of donations go directly to supporting our service projects around the world.

How does The Rotary Foundation use donations?

Our 35,000 clubs carry out sustainable service projects that support our six causes. With donations like yours, we’ve wiped out 99.9 percent of all polio cases. Your donation also trains future peacemakers, supports clean water, and strengthens local economies.

What impact can one donation have?

It can save a life. A child can be protected from polio with as little as 60 cents. Our partners make your donation go even further. For every $1 Rotary commits to polio eradication, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has committed $2. All Project Photographs and Information has been taken from district website - www.rotary3131.org If you want your Projects, DG visits & Youth activities to be displayed in GML, please update the district website regularly.
