Dear Rotary Friends, The wonderful Rotary journey continues. January has been a month of celebrations . The Rotary Fest was held in the month of January from 17th to 20th January at the Ganesh Kala Krida Manch in Pune. It has been the first of its kind and was held with the sole aim of enhancing the image of Rotary in the eyes of the common people. Rotary Club of Pune Deccan Gymkhana led by President Mamata Kolhatkar were the perfect hosts. The event constituted of 70 commercial stalls of various amenities, 20 food stalls and the entire Ganesh Kala Krida auditorium hosted various events. Laughter club People meet, NGO Meet, Real Estate awards, Professional awards, Kalyanji Anandji Nite jointly hosted by 9 clubs and the program by Stree Sakhi Manch for their volunteers. Another club which stood out in its work was RC Poona Downtown led by President Subir Guha. Rotary club of Parvati, Pradhikaran and Hillside also had exceptional visits and it assures me that Rotary movement is going in the right direction. By the time this article comes to you the Rotary Conference SYMPHONY has concluded. Let me assure you that this has been one of the fabulous conferences ever hosted in the entire history of RID 3131. The standout of this event was that all 8 faculties received standing ovation. Hats off to my club RC Panvel and its team members led by Pres Santosh Ambavane and Chairman

Shrikant Chilekar who ensured that the fellowship and the entire event was professionally handled and the highest standards were set. DGE Ravee has also returned from his training in San Diego and we all wish him the very best for 2019-20 DG Dr Shailesh Palekar

International Car Rally Spreading Awareness of Contribution by Rotary As most of you are aware, ‘My Rotary One Rotary’ car rally led by PDG Subodh Joshi was a successful PR event in the last Rotary year. This rally covered 10,000kms within 21 days and visited all i.e. 36 RI Districts in India. So taking a step further, this year’s car rally was decided to make as international. It was decided to visit Nepal and Bhutan being our neighboring and friend countries. The objective of this year’s car rally was to make aware the general public about the gigantic contribution by Rotary in ‘End Polio’ mission. This year’s ‘Organ Donation’ pledge took our district in Guinness book of world record. So it was decided to use this rally to create awareness about organ donation. We extended ‘Clean India’ mission to ‘Clean India – Clean Nepal – Clean Bhutan’, through this rally. ‘Wash inSchools’ was also one more area of concern expressed through

the rally. As we all are aware, Global warming is going to affect the whole world. Nepal and Bhutan will be affected first and more by global warming being in the Himalayan ranges. Hence we included awareness about ’Global Warming’ as one more objective of the rally. The planning started way back in April 2018. It included deciding the RID route and halts. PDG Subodh contacted and was in continual communication with rotary leaders in those areas/RI districts to decide the Rotary meetings at each halt. Finally the dates were decided as 6 Jan to 27 Jan 2019. Total 22 persons from 10 clubs participated in the rally which included 3 couples and 1 annet. 10 rotarians from last year’s rally continued for this year’s rally.

prepared to display the objectives of the rally. All the cars were equipped with tracking device, so that it can be tracked by anybody by visiting the website.

Considering the terrain and weather in this year’s car rally – the name of the rally was finalized as ‘Chills and Thrills on Rotary Wheel’. The logo was finalized which depicted this slogan. Stickers on cars were

Then THE DATE arrived. The rally participants were welcomed very enthusiastically by RC Panvel Industrial Town on 5th Jan and by PDG Dr. Deepak Purohit and PDG Dr. Girish Gune.

DG Dr. Shailesh Palekar flagged of the car rally on 6th Jan at 6:30 am. We reached Indore via Nasik at 6.30 pm and the local Rotarians did not expect that we arrive as per schedule. The meeting was arranged by RC Indore Uptown. PDG Subodh had decided that in each such meeting some distinct participant will share the dais about the rally and its objectives. At Indore Rtn. Pradeep Mulay spoke. Next day we started at 7:30 am. This was our routine with little alteration for next 21 days. Our next halt was Jhansi. Joint meeting by rotary clubs in Jhansi. A press conference was arranged. The TV channels also took news bite. We visited the statue of Rani Laxmibai. We all felt very proud as flag off was arranged at the fort of Jhansi. Our next halt was at Bareilly where we received a very warm welcome. We were impressed by their Physiotherapy Centre and manufacturing unit of Jaipur foot. We received flag off from the local Rotarians and we commenced for entering new country – Nepal. This journey reminded me of the famous bollywood song…

Designated Month – Peace & Conflict Resolution PEACE is a state of being, which is often elusive to achieve in the world at large. Mahatma Gandhi, Maharshi Karve, to name just a few leaders, strived for Peace. History is replete with tales of Conflict and Violence. Should we Rotarians accept conflict as a way of life ? Or, like some of the leaders named, are we finding ways to mitigate and prevent conflicts by addressing the underlying causes? The good news is that Rotary has identified PROMOTING PEACE

as one of its six focus areas and February is a designated PEACE MONTH in Rotary. RID 3131 Rotarians are taking action to address the underlying causes of conflict including poverty, inequality, ethnic tension, lack of access to education, and unequal distribution of resources. Our Rotary efforts are directed towards helping address the root causes of conflict and creating conditions that foster peace. Traditionally Rotary has approached peace through 4 avenues of activities :

2019-2020: Rotary Theme – Rotary Connects the World RI President-elect Mark Daniel Maloneyannounced the 2019-20 presidential theme, Rotary Connects the World. Maloney, a member of the Rotary Club of Decatur, Alabama, USA, unveiled the 201920 presidential theme, Rotary Connects the World, to incoming district governors at Rotary’s annual training event, the International Assembly, in San Diego, California, USA. “The first emphasis is to grow Rotary — to grow our service, to grow the impact of our projects, but most importantly, to grow our membership so that we can achieve more,” Maloney said. Maloney believes that connection is at the heart of the Rotary experience. “Rotary allows us to connect with each other, in deep and meaningful ways, across our differences,” Maloney said. “It connects us to people we would never otherwise have met, who are more like us than we ever could have known. It connects us to our communities, to professional opportunities, and to the people who need our help.” Maloney also called on every Rotary and Rotaract club to identify segments of their community not represented in their club by creating a membership committee with diverse members. “Through Rotary, we connect to the incredible diversity of humanity on a truly unique footing, forging deep and lasting ties in pursuit of a common goal,” he added. “In this ever more divided world, Rotary connects us all.” Maloney urged leaders to offer alternative meeting easier for busy professionals and people roles.

Relationship with the United Nations During 2019-20, Rotary will host a series of presidential conferences around the world, focusing on Rotary’s relationship with the United Nations and the UN’s sustainable development goals that many Rotary service projects support. More information will be available in July. In 2020, the United Nations will celebrate the 75th anniversary of its charter and its mission of promoting peace. Rotary was one of 42 organizations the United States invited to serve as consultants to its delegation at the 1945 San Francisco conference, which led to the UN’s charter. For decades, Rotary has worked alongside the United Nations to address humanitarian issues around the world. Today, Rotary holds the highest consultative status that the UN offers to nongovernmental organizations. “Rotary shares the United Nations’ enduring commitment to a healthier, more peaceful, and more sustainable world,” Maloney said. “And Rotary offers something no other organization can match: an existing infrastructure that allows people from all over the world to connect in a spirit of service and peace and take meaningful action toward that goal.” All Project Photographs and Information have been taken from district website -www.rotary3131.org If you want your Projects, DG visits & Youth activities to be displayed in GML, please update the district website regularly.
