Introduction adaptive reuse project overview
9
Adaptive Reuse Adaptive reuse is a design tool that can help preserve a community’s history and allow the residents to maintain a link to the past. It can strengthen the community as a whole through the juxtaposition of the old with the new. This form of design also plays a significant role in environmental sustainability. As the population size continuously keeps growing there becomes more pressure to build residential housing, commercial buildings, etc; there is more urban sprawl with every day. By choosing to forgo new high rise buildings and instead preserve the old buildings, we can begin to renovate them for a new use; this will ultimately lead to a reduction in energy consumption and harmful impacts that come from major construction. Adaptive reuse can help preserve the planet, the communities, and the history that lies behind these communities. 10
Project Overview Rochester is currently centered on redeveloping old buildings rather than starting new construction. This undertaking is an opportunity to

Many of these houses, built between 1900-1930, have classic architectural elements like American gumwood trim and stained glass windows. In addition, there is a large residential zone that starts across the street from the site. Community Playscape The Beech Nut Site has a large outdoor open area that is currently empty; it is a wonderful opportunity to reinvigorate the site by bringing landscaping and greening strategies into the design. This initiative will bring life to E. Main Street and will hopefully spur investment opportunities; it could even bring awareness to sustainable education. The concrete ground allows parking to be added near the site which is a necessity for the functions within the building. The parking is separated from the public area with planter boxes that are open for community members to use for growing vegetables, perennials, or anything else they might want; in addition these boxes are accessible for people in wheelchairs or any other mobility impairments. The main landscaping initiative is providing greater greenery and shrubs for the separation between the building, the pedestrians, and the road. By adding planters on the sidewalk, pedestrians might feel more welcome and safe.

Steel windows are a quality that will be translated to the adaptive reuse of the Beech Nut Building. The proposed design will maximize window openings for air circulation as well as daylighting. In addition, restoring the steel windows will contribute to the industrial aesthetic of the interior space and add character to the exterior of the building, as well as the overall site. Throughout the spaces there will be traces of the characteristics that steel casement windows provide: transparency and rustic industrialism. Similar materials and the grid-like frame will be apparent in the space and the program through the FF&E and material selection. There will be specific viewing points throughout the space, highlighting the different functions of program.

A community gathering place that functions as a social and educational hub and is centered on creating an inclusive and transparent environment where ideas and information are freely exchanged. The space embodies the essence of health and wellness to foster one’s personal development as well as promote a sense of community. This duality of educational and social programs will create an informal balance that will allow users to move through the building in constant exploration of the space and themselves.
“Unearth The concept unearth stems from the idea of discovery and exploration. With every visit, community members will have the opportunity to come across something new in the building and take advantage of the resources offered.
