hile visiting and talking with Wild Man Dan, we learned that he is a Certified Beer Judge and he teaches beer tasting classes. You can join Dan in “Virginia’s smallest production brewery”, the vintage red barn on the property, for a Saturday class. We decided that this is the perfect experience to pair with our Virtual Beer Festival. Maybe take the class before visiting beer trails across Virginia?

Brew Beer” I have been driving past the red barn in Northern Nelson County for almost fifteen years, and it has always caught my attention. The barn was built sometime in the 1930s and a slice of Americana, including the ads from bygone years. Now, a new logo is present in the upper left corner, and the barn is the home of WildManDan’s Brewery.

History preserved and the barn has a new life. It’s Virginia’s smallest production brewery—by design.

Unplug, Relax and Enjoy a Beer

H

ave you ever arrived at a new location and immediately felt at home and relaxed? That is how Dave Renfro, DW&S Publisher, and I felt when we first visited WildManDan Beer, Bed and Breakfast one late Spring day.

The Tatarka family greeted us as we

arrived, and we both felt as if we could sit on the porch and talk to them for hours. As a matter of fact, Dave later returned to stay at the bed and breakfast.

The story doesn’t start on the wide country porch or in the gazebo with comfy furniture or even around the fire pit. This story began on a hiking trail in Peru. While hiking in Peru,

Dan decided to take his passion for homebrewing to a new level. He decided to craft a second “retirement” career around his love.

And we are glad that a moment on a far-away hiking trail brought the Tatarka family to Nelson County, VA. (and a trip to Germany… keep reading for all the details) Dan returned to his then home in

Roanoke, Virginia. In Roanoke, Dan was an avid member of the local homebrewers club, Star City Brewers.

The Star City Brewers Guild is an active club with many members and ideas. Annual competitions and comradery within this club have produced a few top-winning Virginia crafter brewers.

I can say from personal experience that not all homebrewed beer should leave the basement or garage. Some of you are laughing and nodding as you remember your stint as a home brewer.

But Wild Dan is different. He has the sixth sense for beer crafting. He also has a background in science and chemistry. Dan paired his club experience with courses at the Siebel Institute of Technology. He also completed the course and became an official Beer Judge. Stars were lining up in Virginia’s “Star City,” but it was a trip to Germany that created the spark that changed life for the Tatarka family.

What happened in Germany?

What happened on one day in Dusseldorf, Germany that changed life for the Tatarka family? Dan and Terri traveled to Germany on their beer tour.

In Dusseldorf, they found a four-seater bar that brewed its own beer. If all four seats are taken, locals and visitors wait their turn outside. As you wait, you anticipated the custom experience, the interaction with the bar owner--who also brewed the day’s selection of beer. Small by design.

Often, it is an experience that shapes business, a plan, or even a future. Dan and Terri Tatarka returned from Germany with a desire to bring an intimate beer experience to Virginia craft beer lovers.

In 2015, Dan and Terri opened WildManDan Beer & Breakfast in Afton, Virginia. Terri is the Inn Manager and Chef and has created a relaxing Blue Ridge Mountain escape.

the Inn’s fire pit. The B&B sits just a quick drive from both the Blue Ridge Parkway, the Shenandoah National Park and Nelson County’s Route 151.

I want to ask Terri about the atmosphere that she has created at the Inn. Terri has a hospitality background, but I have visited numerous B&Bs, and the vibe at WildManDan is unique. It’s like arriving at a friend’s home.

Kim: Tell us how you created a welcoming vibe. Is there a mantra that you follow to pull together the furnishings, the cozy nooks, the country breakfast, and just the warm welcome?

Terri: All decisions are based on our mission statement, our own travel and on how we can support and source from our local community. Breakfast is developed seasonally based on local farms and our garden and in conjunction with guests individual dietary concerns and needs. We keep an eye on food trends and add our own interpretation. Above all, the feel is love and comfort.

Although the B&B is close to many popular attractions, you may not want to leave the property. You may want to unplug, relax, and attend WildManDan’s beer class. You can wander down to the red barn for Happy Hour or join Dan’s Saturday morning beer class. You can sit at the bar and enjoy a cold pint while listening to vintage vinyl or take your beer flight outside and sit on the patio, under some large shade trees.

We sat on the patio, enjoyed a flight, and met Dan and Terri’s daughter, Cory. Craft beer runs through Cory’s veins too. She is the third member of the family to join the team. As we sat on the patio talking, I could see a picture of that small bar-brewery over in Germany emerge. I could see the experience that shaped today’s visit. A flight of four beers distinct beers continued to tell Wild Dan’s story.

That’s what we strive to be.

The decor is a nod to history and modern convenience but most importantly-a feel. We can not relax in a museum, so we purposely have distressed surfaces that another glass ring or beer spill will only enhance. Old trunks to drop your luggage on...We encourage attending breakfast in your pajamas! We want your shoulders to drop and know you are accepted as you are. no judgment, no pretense.

Life has a way of isolating us all sometimes, and our

We have gathering areas, host a firepit, engage in conversation on the gazebo, play darts in the BrewBarn, host beer classes and feature no TVs. We do have highspeed fiber optic cable (we are not heathens!) And most importantly, we don’t take ourselves too seriously...we laugh. out loud and often at our own imperfection.

We cross the line from innkeeper to friends rather quickly... within about 15 minutes of guest arrival according to Mark and Sandy Grasser (regulars!)

Of course, I had a few questions about the beer flight and WildManDan’s Beer Class…

I

Kim: On a flight, of four beers, you have a unique combination of European influence and local flavors. Your past has undoubtedly influenced your craft. It feels eclectic, intimate, and with notes of a homebrew background. Tell us how your experience in travel and as a homebrewer has influenced today’s selection.

WMD: While traveling to Germany I enjoyed drinking the different styles I encountered in those regions. As you know beers taste better at the location they are brewed do to the freshness where they are made. Upon returning I wanted to duplicate those styles I enjoyed the most. Many of my beers are influenced by other beers. Depending on the beer style I sometimes tweak the recipe based on my preferences of what I think will make a great tasting beer.

As we go to print, WildManDan Brewery announced on social media a collaboration project with Silverback Distillery, also in Nelson County. Late Summer, WMD will release a new beer, and it is currently aging in a Silverback barrel.

Kim: I think that this new, Summer beer sounds like a “hat-tip” to the region. We love your beer and the spirits distilled at Silverback. Can you give the DW&S readers a hint about the new beer release? When can we enjoy a pint in the red barn?

WMD: That beer was just released and is available now.

Being small batch, I will not be able to duplicate it since it came from a single barrel rye batch. This combination turned out so great that in the future I will brew a “cousin” version. (For the Tasting Notes, see The Virtual Beer Festival in this edition of DW&S Magazine) The beverage industry in Virginia is booming with craft beer at the forefront. Not only are Virginians following beer trails and enjoying tastings, but are also consuming record amounts of craft local beer. The Nelson 151 Trail runs beside the WildManDan Brewery and is visited by thousands each year. I often write about the overall experience at a tap room. What could improve the experience for Virginia beer lovers? In my opinion, beer education. Understanding the science behind the brew and even understanding how to taste the beer. The knowledge that adds another layer to the hobby of tasting Virginia craft beer. Dan has used his grassroots love of beer to create WildManDan’s Beer Class. It’s a class for every beer lover. Join Dan in the red barn in Afton, Virginia. It is a Saturday morning well spent.

In Spring 2019, WildManDan became Virginia’s smallest production brewery. The public can now visit the red barn, enjoy a beer, and purchase a growler of beer to go. The public can also attend Dan’s beer class and learn about tasting the beer in an intimate setting.

After all, it is all about the experience and the craft. n

ends on RT 29 in Nelson County. Join us as we take a Saturday drive filled with excellent craft beer, local food, and beautiful views. (Of course, we suggest a designated driver for this trail and any trail in DW&S magazine)

W

e start our Saturday at Starr Hill in Crozet, Virginia.

The craft brand of Starr Hill was born in a music hall in 1999 and later moved to its current founding location in Crozet in 2005. This craft beer has deep roots in the history of Virginia craft beer. We wanted to start The Brew Ridge Trail here as a hat-tip to the past and to the trail.

The Brew Ridge Trail is not only a collection of Virginia breweries, but it was also the first established trail in Virginia. So, cheers to this trail!

Starr Hill has 24 beers on tap, and local food trucks park just outside, next to the patio. Follow them on social media, and you will find a healthy calendar of live music. Love of music is still a cornerstone to this brand. The music is just one reason to stop by often…or maybe you are a fan of Geeks Who Drink Trivia Night too.

We continue on and follow The Brew Ridge Trail to Blue Mountain Brewery, along RT 151 in Nelson County. We are going to stop for lunch and enjoy a cold pint, the view

and one of their favorite Reuben Sandwiches. The outdoor dining at Blue Mountain Brewery also draws a crowd of both locals and visitors.

(It’s dog-friendly too) One night, we are going to return to watch the sunset behind the Blue Ridge Mountains and listen to some live music.

But today, we are heading south along RT 151---also known as the Nelson 151 Trail, another craft beverage, food and lodging trail crosses here.

On a special note, we would like to add that all of the pioneers of The Brew Ridge Trail have expanded over the years. You will find their taprooms, production facilities, and brands across the Commonwealth of Virginia. Recently, we congratulated Wild Wolf Brewing on the opening of their second Tap Room in Charlottesville, Virginia. Read about Starr Hill’s expansion into Richmond in this edition of DW&S magazine. n

Maureen: Credit and honors go to the brewers and owners themselves. Each location has its own loyal following, but they realized early on that they would grow their visitorship better as a trail. Now we are known as a destination for craft beer lovers. And beer lovers love to talk about their travels, so we used them to promote the trail.

The brewers collaborate regularly with one another, so it was easy to organize the group and ten years later, we are still having fun. This year we held our first festival, in February, and more than 700 folks attended.

I

DW&S: As of the printing of this edition, Virginia has twenty plus beer trails, and growing yearly. Tell us what it was like to market Virginia’s first beer trail, over ten years ago. How did you successfully sell visitors on the idea of following a craft beer trail?

will take you along the Rockfish Valley, with the Blue Ridge Parkway across the ridge to your right. You will see mountain ridges, farmland, and the Rockfish River. On this trail, bring your camera as you may want to mix some landscape photos with the beer shots.

South on RT 151, you will pass through the small community of Nellysford. Here is where you will find Wild Wolf Brewery. Upon arrival, you will immediately notice the shaded beer garden. You can sit, with your dog, under large shade trees and bright red umbrellas while enjoying a flight of beer. Enjoy some BBQ, a burger or something from Chef Chris Jack--- “Farm to Fork at its Best.” Take a break and play some corn hole under the shade of those trees. A cold beer and a shady garden make for a great Summer afternoon.

It is only a short drive to our next stop, Devils Backbone Brewpub, and Meadows. If you follow the DW&S social media pages, you may have seen Team DW&S camping at the new Devils Backbone Camp Ground. They have both RV and tent camping; so, this may be the perfect place to stop for the night. Reservations are required though.

want to enjoy the view of the sun setting behind Three Ridges, spend the night and get back on the trail on Sunday.

To get to our last stop on The Brew Ridge Trail, you have two options. Do you like winding mountain roads with fabulous views?

Or do you prefer a flat road and a quick trip? We opt for the mountain pass and follow RT 151 over Brents Mountain.

We stop along the way to take some photos before turning left on RT 56 to head over to Blue Mountain Barrel House on Sunday afternoon.

If you prefer the flat and fast route, head back to RT 6 (via RT 151 North) and use it to cut over to RT 29.

Just as you would expect, the Blue Mountain Barrel House also pours many of your favorite Blue Mountain favorites. You can get a growler filled or pick up a six pack to go too. We had a Classic Lager and enjoyed the Sunday afternoon view. The Blue Mountain Food Truck was parked on-site and provided some great afternoon snacks.

A great way to end our visit to The Brew Ridge Trail.

We enjoyed exploring Virginia’s first beer trail; so, we reached out to Maureen Kelly with Nelson County Tourism to ask about the founding of this trail.

With six Loudoun breweries winning awards at this year’s Virginia Craft Beer Cup Competition, the quality of Loudoun’s local brews is evident. With so many breweries included on the LoCo Ale Trail, there are literally hundreds of beers to sample.

To showcase the more rural beer scene, The Farm Breweries cluster also focuses on the agricultural side of beer production. The MidAtlantic’s first commercial hops processing facility opened in 2015 at Black Hops Farm, now also home to Vanish Farmwoods Brewery and Pilot Malt House. Virginia’s climate, soil, and landscape make it ideal for growing hops, and Black Hops Farm helps to supply breweries in Loudoun as well as others throughout the East Coast. In addition to Vanish and Black Hops farms, travelers can visit Barnhouse Brewery, B Chord Brewing Company, Bearchase Brewing Company, Dirt Farm Brewing, Harper’s Ferry Brewing, Hillsborough Brewery, Old 690 Brewing Company, and Quattro Goombas Brewery.

On the opposite end of the geographical spectrum, The Leesburg cluster, with Bike TrAle Brewing, Black Hoof Brewing Company, Black Walnut Brewing, Crooked Run Brewing, Dog Money Restaurant and Brewery, and Loudoun Brewing Company, focuses on tasting rooms in and around the historic downtown area.

Play the LoCo Passport Game While the organization provides handy tools like the AleTrail guide, downloadable from Visit Loudoun’s website, which helps to visualize and plan a day of tasting room hopping, they’ve also sweetened the pot (or barrel, as it were) with prizes for participants in their LoCo Ale Trail passport program.

Visitors (and locals) can pick up a passport at any Loudoun brewery then visit tasting rooms and collect stamps to win prizes like tee shirts, bandanas, bottle openers, koozies, and beer coasters after completing a cluster.

Those who complete all four clusters will receive a grand prize. Once a cluster (or all four) on the passport is completed, the holder can redeem the rewards by visiting the Loudoun County Visitor Center in Leesburg or by e-mailing or mailing the passport. Mailed passports are returned within 2-3 weeks.

“To date, 48 people have completed the full LoCo Ale Trail, and more than 100 have participated since launching in September 2018, “ Sigal shared. “Since September 2018, Visit Loudoun has also distributed 30,000 LoCo Ale Trail maps/passports and have had cluster conquerors from states as far as Pennsylvania, Colorado, and even Washington. hree million hikers each year spend some time on of the trail. And 4,000 committed outdoor enthusiasts attempt to complete the entire hike in one season. It typically takes five to six months.

Only one in four succeed.

The AT speed record stands at 41 days. Karel Sabbe reached the trail’s at Mt. Katahdin last August completing the AT faster than anyone before him.

Forget your calculator. That’s an

average of 53 miles a day. The man must have needed a beer on day 41.

Another AT giant is Warren Doyle who completed the entire AT hike 18 times. That’s 39,000 miles. After graduating from college and earning his master’s degree, he realized, “I had to do something no one was telling me to do—no rewards, no cheerleaders, no scholarships, something I was not going to get paid for,” Doyle said.

passports redeemed resulting in 21,025 brewery visits.

Folks from 47 states, Australia, Columbia, Canada, and Germany have enjoyed Virginia craft beer as a result.”

The passports are produced and distributed to the participating breweries, which in turn hand them out to their guests at no cost. At each guest visit, a brewery provides an adhesive stamp to be placed in the passport.

After eight or more stamps have been scored by a satisfied beer lover the passport can be redeemed for a bright orange “Drink in Shenandoah Valley” tee shirt.

The colorful and catchy-titled shirt is a prized possession and obviously gets a lot of wear given the success of the program.

As an added bonus, the Trail recently extended the benefits of the passport by providing free stainless-steel growlers for anyone who posts a photo of themselves wearing the tee shirt on a social media site.

Another collaborative effort is in the works with the popular beer app Untapped. The free app allows users to keep track of what they’ve tasted and what they thought of the brews they’ve enjoyed. A partnership is being created with the app designers and should be announced soon.

But beer is not the sole draw while pursuing the suds journey. There are numerous natural attractions to take in when circuit riding the trail. Bordered by the Blue Ridge

participating breweries; all are located in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley.

Created in mid-2016, today the individual but linked brew houses are pulling over a hundred individual craft tap handles while slaking the thirst of tens of thousands of natives and tourists alike.

“At the beginning of developing the trail we realized we did not have enough breweries to actually create one, so we asked Lexington to the south and Harrisonburg to the north to join our efforts,” said Sheryl Wagner, director of tourism for the city of Staunton.

As with all things new learning to toggle and pull the right brewery “strings” loomed important in the early days of trail. It’s one thing to build a trail and create a website but driving beer lovers to actually “hike” it required some professional advice.

“The first year, we were just doing promotions and trying to get the trail name out to the public.” Then the Waynesboro, Augusta marketing managers joined Wagner in attending a beer conference in Ashville, N.C. One of the first questions posed to the new beer barons was, “Do you have a passport program?” They did not.

They returned home and quickly established one.

Richmond’s New Starr Hill

by Kim Chappell This year, Starr Hill Brewery celebrates its 20th Anniversary. A brewery with its roots in the music industry, this Virginia-made craft beer has amassed a loyal following. It’s the beer, but it’s also the vibe. Brand fans not only enjoy the brew, but they are also known to collect the “can art.”

he Crozet, Virginia, production facility and Tap Room was opened in 2005. It’s the facility that produces the retail beer found on store shelves across the midAtlantic. While sitting at this bar, researching for this edition’s story on The Brew Ridge Trail (research=enjoying a pint) DW&S first learned of Starr Hill’s next venture. Later in 2019, Starr Hill will open the Starr Hill Richmond Beer Hall & Rooftop in Scott’s Addition.

That is an example of the benefit of writing for DW&S: The “research pints,” and you never know where the road will lead you. This time, it is from Crozet, VA, at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains, to Richmond and the eclectic Historic District of Scott’s Addition.

Scott’s Addition has become a craft beverage mecca on the East Coast. You will find breweries, cideries, and distilleries mixed with restaurants, shops, and cafes.

It’s a historic district that started as a 600-acre farmstead in the 1800s, willed to General Winfield Scott. In 1901, it was established as a Richmond business district, built around the railyard and transportation along Broad Street. Over the decades, this district cycled through progress and decay a few times. Until ten years ago, the transformation turned to a new neighborhood for the arts, including the art of crafting fine beverages.

I mention the history of Scott’s

Addition because history is woven into each of the Starr Hill Brewery locations. The Crozet location was once a food processing plant and a significant employer in the region. The Roanoke, Virginia, location was once a horse stable and played a vital role in the community. Starr Hill has re-purposed buildings and built branded taprooms and breweries over the past two decades. They will, again, take a community building and create a Beer Hall in Scott’s Addition. As I am writing this story, construction is underway on a warehouse building in the Addition.

To learn about the new Beer Hall & Rooftop, I spoke to Allie Hochman. Allie has been with Starr Hill for ten years and is the General Manager of the new Richmond location.

First, I know that you want to hear about the beer. The Richmond location will be far more than a Tap Room. It will also be a brewery with a ten-barrel brewing system.

Starr Hill and craft beer fans will find unique beers that will not be widely distributed. Most will only be found at the Richmond location and only on draft. This includes Wild Ales with spontaneous fermentation. You can also expect to taste pale lagers and interesting IPAs. Bring your growlers.

But, it’s not just the beer… it’s the whole experience.

So, here’s a peek into the site plan.

The Richmond Beer Hall & Rooftop will be divided into three zones, each zone with a seating and entertainment area. Each will provide a unique visitor experience.

There’s something for every beer hall lover, including your dog.

The patio will provide outdoor seating, a parking spot for a local food truck, and a place to enjoy live music. Dogs love Scott’s Addition too, and this is the zone that will welcome your fluffy best friend. (on-leash dogs are only allowed on the patio) The main hall will be significant and can accommodate groups and special events.

The bar will showcase 20+ taps, and this zone will host a whole list of programming—including live music from local and regional bands.

Guests may purchase Starr Hill-branded merchandise including RVA-specific Starr Hill gear. If you are an admirer of Starr Hill

“can-art,” you may note wall art, created in-house, by the team.

Soon, fans can enjoy a specialty beer with a view of the Richmond skyline. The rooftop bar will also have a 20+ tap system and provide a four-season experience. Enjoy a beer with a Summer view or with a cozy Winter blanket.

You will even be able to enjoy the view with a side of tunes. Yes, this third zone will also host live music.

They announced Starr Hill Downtown. The new brewery and tap room will be within the new Dairy Market project on Preston Avenue.

Charlottesville Family Day

by Team DW&S Looking for a unique day in the Charlottesville area? Team DW&S spent a day exploring the “Monticello Region” in Charlottesville, and here are our tips for a full day of hiking, history, local food and apple picking. We started the day with an early morning walk on The Saunders-Monticello Trail and ended with a cold pint of cider and the sunset on Carter Mountain. A perfect Virginia day!

Monticello: Home of the author of the Declaration of Independence, this world heritage site is both impressive and beautiful. Allow at least three hours for your visit. We arrived shortly before opening, at 8:30.

A tip is to buy your tickets or book your special tours online and save.

You will park at the Visitor’s Center where you can watch an optional 15 minute video. Tour the house, the beautiful grounds and see all the exhibitions. There is an on-site café, but we opted for a late lunch at new Michie Tavern Pub, shown in our photo.

The Saunders-Monticello Trail: Explore trails within 89 acres of native hardwoods with Blue Ridge Mountain views. Trails include gravel walkways, boardwalks and wooded paths. The trails are family-friendly and for most ability levels.

Carter Mountain Orchard: “Pick Your Own” apples at Carter Mountain has been a Virginia tradition for decades. But, the experience is beyond fresh apples… there are apple cider donuts, apple pies, wine and hard cider. Plus, a farm shop with many Virginia Made products. The sunset, viewed from Carter Mountain, is said to be one of the best in Virginia. Now, visitors have two opportunities to watch the sunset in August and September: Wednesday Wind Down and Thursday Sunset Series.

I love taking weekend trips to places that aren’t too far of a drive from Richmond, Virginia. I recently went on a trip to Charleston, South Carolina. A top goal was to explore this historic city on foot. So, I spent a few months researching the cafes, restaurants, Southern cocktails, and rooftop views. I also left some time to find the “by-chance” gems that you often find while exploring.

harleston did not disappoint. If I had to think of a word to describe Charleston, it would be “opulence.” The magnificent churches and the absolute beauty of walking down Kings Street. Not to forget the shopping at all the splendid shops and grandeur of a drink on one of the many rooftop bars- It’s all fantastic.

Follow Along on our weekend in Charleston, SC. My husband and I stayed at the Francis Marion Hotel, where we were treated wonderfully by their staff. The hotel was right in the heart of everything and fit the goal of exploring on foot. Finding the perfect hotel is where months of research paid off for this long-weekend escape.

While exploring, we went into several other hotels.

They were all gorgeous and shared the Southern hospitality that makes Charleston famous. In this town, you will find lodging for every taste. From city-center hotels to Bed and Breakfast Inns to AirBnBs. Do your lodging research and then let the rest of your adventure unfold.

It was an action-packed three days. There is no way I could mention all the places we visited, so I am sharing my favorites.

Callie’s Hot Little Biscuit While visiting a new city, talk to locals and then look for the long fan line. A long line on a Saturday morning

tells you that you have found good food. That’s how we found Callie’s Hot Little Biscuit.

First of all- that name is super adorable, just like this shop. When we walked up, the line stretched down the block. Apparently, we were not the only people intrigued by this little place. I had read online reviews that this was a place to find. I was lucky enough to get some questions answered by their owner, Carrie Morey.

Paula: Tell me a little bit about your Charleston location? It’s such a tiny place for such a big taste.

Carrie: Our Callie’s Hot Little Biscuit shop used to be an alley that the owners walled in and made an 8 ft wide by 80 ft deep space for retail. I was looking for a way to spread the word about my handmade online specialty food biscuit business, but I was hesitant to spend the money and take the risk--after all, I wasn’t sure a biscuit bake shop was going to work.

Paula: So you didn’t think it was going to be such a big hit?

Callie: I had no idea! I am completely in awe and always counting my lucky stars that we have such amazing fans!! I am so grateful!

Paula: What are your best sellers?

What are the favorite items on the menu?

Callie: Our best sellers range from our Sausage egg and pimento cheese biscuit sandwich and our bacon egg and cheese biscuit sandwich – which ironically aren’t our “hot little biscuits’-our customers are just hungry! But our customers do love the country ham and cinnamon hot little biscuits a ton too!!!

Paula: I had the pimento cheese sandwich on our first of two visits, and it was delicious.

Pounce Cat Café Invited by a Cat… Some places you find by accident and Pounce Cat Café and was one of those awesome finds. A sweet kitty looked at me through the window as we walked by, and I instantly stopped and reached for the door.

while enjoying the feline company. A sign on the wall boasted an average of 2 cats a day were adopted from the establishment.

Pounce Cat Cafe: “Since our launch in December 2016, we have found over 1,150 cats and kittens in South Carolina and Georgia their furrever homes! (ME-WOW!) By housing shelter cats in a cozy cafe in the middle of the city, we significantly increase shelter cats’ visibility and their chances of being adopted!”

Every purchase made helped a cat that needed support.

This was a café with heart! The café works in partnership with the local humane society to re-home cats that need new forever families. How fantastic is that?

My husband and I enjoyed a local beer and talked with some other guests about where they were from and our mutual love of cats. It was a great way to break the ice and

meet new people. The Pounce Cat Cafe was a unique experience for me, and I loved their quirky décor and shopkeepers with heart and enthusiasm.

Eleve Restaurant and Rooftop Bar A cocktail, while enjoying the view from a rooftop, was near the top of my bucket list for Charleston.

Charleston has several beautiful rooftop bars overlooking the Historic District. Eleve is off the main street and has stunning views of the city. We stopped in for a cocktail and a glass of wine and were awed by the bright colors, the gorgeous bar, and the resplendent art on the walls. This place was charming. They boast “French dishes with a gypsy twist.” It’s definitely worth a look around.

Southern Shopping A huge part of Charleston is shopping. You will find every high-end store you could ever want and some unique fun places as well. Kings Street is on the “Top 10 Shopping Streets” in the country by U.S. News and World Report.

Foodies will want to take home some famous Benne Wafers. Benne is another word for sesame, and the seed has been in the South since Colonial times. The Benne Wafer was created from a recipe that dates back over 100 years. The Olde Colony Bakery first made the wafers in the 1940s, and now the city’s favorite “cookie” can be found in many shops. Locals believe that eating these cookies will bring Good Luck.

If you are a foodie, you will also want to find Byrd’s Famous Cookies. You can find these in the Market Square.

Look for favorite flavors such as maple, chocolate chip, and a tangy Key Lime. Both the Benne Wafers and the Byrd’s cookies make a great snack as you are exploring Charleston.

A favorite shop, Lily Charleston, made me feel like I was in a fancy European boutique with lovely gifts and vintage jewelry. My personal favorite Charleston shops were the art galleries and antique shops. Lily Charleston provided a beautiful blend of both.

I also loved the Savannah Bee Company. They had honey bee gifts, bath items, honey wine, and my favorite a mead tasting bar! I sampled all their meads, and they were so tasty. The store is open and inviting, I could have spent an hour in there alone, but it was time for dinner.

Grits & Country Fried Steak What would a trip to the South be without a LowCountry dinner? Again, this is where some research paid big dividends. Ironically, we are from Virginia and chose Virginia’s on King, as our Low-Country dining spot. We quickly became fans.

We wanted to try a place that was heavy on the southern fare and had the hospitable feel you expect in the South. I ordered a Fried Fish and Grits, and my husband had their Country Fried Steak. We paired our entrees with a hazelnut brown ale. It was delicious and not too heavy. The restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and the chefs are inspired by old family recipes. During the 2019 Charleston Restaurant Week, Virginia’s on King was named “Best Southern Restaurant.” We agree!

Over three days, we explored, ate, drank, and took hundreds of photos. I have only mentioned a small taste of the places available in Charleston. The Charleston Harbor surrounds magnificent churches, brick and stucco buildings, fantastic shopping, and decadent food. It is overwhelmingly beautiful. As we go to print, Dogtown Brewing Company in Manchester/Richmond is opening its new brewery on the historic Hull Street corridor. They have partnered with both Hot Diggity Donuts and The Butterbean Market & Café to provide a menu of local snacks to pair with their beer.

In June, Decipher Brewing opened in Charlottesville at 1740 Broadway Street. This brewery is veteran owned, including a group of three Navy veterans and one active Air Force service member.
