Mauro Maccioni

Founding Family of Circo Restaurant Circo opened its doors in November 2014 at the InterContinental Abu Dhabi and this celebrity-driven heir to Manhattan’s famous French restaurant Le Cirque’s legacy, has not disappointed city diners. Since its opening, Circo has won several awards and redefined the notion of contemporary Italian cuisine. We speak to Circo’s director, Mauro Maccioni, son of Le Cirque’s famous forefather, Sirio Maccioni, about all things Italian. After over year of unprecedented success for Circo, is there anything you’d change? We are very happy with our new chef Matteo, our location within the InterContinental Abu Dhabi and our design. I sometimes think Circo’s design is so beautiful that it’s intimidating and people may think it’s for “other people” and “not for them.” So we are changing that a bit. We are making our outside terrace a bit more casual and integrating a fritto misto Italiano (mixed fried seafood) sharing menu, simple, fast Italian comfort food. I want to create a balance, a place where you can sample a quick bite, in a casual manner or experience Italy with a multi-course meal in an elegant setting. That’s hard to find in one place. Our philosophy is to offer something for everyone under one roof. It’s a bit like a circus which is our theme, if you want to have an authentic taste of Italy or our regional dining subcultures, this is the place. But, if you just want to come for a beverage, some fried seafood and a great view, I can’t imagine a better place than our terrace. Have you adapted your menu at all for the Middle Eastern palate? No, not really. The Middle Eastern palate is very similar to the Mediterranean. We aren’t trying to reinvent the culinary wheel. We serve classics. We like to keep it simple. One exception is our Abu Dhabi pizza, to which we added saffron and shrimp, locally beloved ingredients which reflect the region and it’s exceptional. It’s a top seller. You grew up in a family of restaurateurs and your mother was responsible for much of Le Cirque (in Manhattan) and Circo’s menus, but do you cook? Are you carrying on the family tradition? I do! (He smiles). Check out my Instagram. I love to cook and post food pictures just like everybody else. I think we are carrying on all my mother’s traditions here at Circo in a way that makes her very proud. With regard to cooking, the focus should be on Chef Matteo though, because he is our star Chef de Cuisine, but I love to cook and I hope my daughter will too. She’s young, so who knows if she’ll carry on the tradition?!

Le Cirque has been around for over forty years, it must have a storied menu from which Circo can draw. Indeed, in the 1970s in New York City, French food was in fashion, so my father [Sirio] didn’t cook Italian. Once he was in Nova Scotia in 1979 with the famed New York Times food critic Craig Claiborne and happened to cook an inspired version of pasta primavera, which went over so well, the guests begged him to put it on the menu. Claiborne wrote about it in the newspaper and everyone started ordering it. My dad never put it on the menu though, because he didn’t want to cause a fuss by introducing Italian food. But he would make it on a cart, tableside, for anyone “in the know” who ordered it and he still will to this day. You can find it in season here too at Circo, it’s my dad’s most famous dish. Yes, our menus have history but, more importantly, they stay very true to Italy and we are very proud of that. Aside from history and great food, is there anything else that contributed to Circo’s success in Abu Dhabi, a city where other celebrity-driven concepts have failed? I’d definitely credit some of the success to our partnership with the InterContinental Abu Dhabi. You can have a great concept and/or a great chef who doesn’t want to understand what their customers actually want to eat. We worked very closely with the InterContinental to understand our clientele. Again, we didn’t have to change much, but a lot of work went into tailoring our concept and less so our menu to the region. Is there anything else diners can expect from the award-winning Circo in 2017 besides the new casual concept on the terrace? Yes, we are introducing a new seasonal, regional menu so diners can take a culinary tour of different parts of Italy, which we are excited about. It launches soon, so please watch out for it! Delicious Recipes Sarah Dheays aka Diary of a Lifestyle Mommy is an expat foodie, travel and lifestyle blogger living in Abu Dhabi. Sarah shares with us some of her recipes she grew up enjoying. “A home cooked meal to me is all about love, so be inspired to eat well and live well”

Danish Butter Cookies Ingredients: 2 cups all-purpose flour (sifted) 1 egg 1 cup confectioners’ sugar (powder sugar) 2 tsp vanilla 1 cup butter (unsalted) Instructions 1. In a large bowl, sift together your flour and sugar, add the egg and mix together, then add the vanilla and butter cubes. Use your fingertips to gently incorporate the ingredients, till a dough is formed. 2. Roll your dough on a flour covered surface (you don't need a lot of flour just enough to stop the dough from sticking), cut out the desired shapes using cookie cutters (we used a heart shaped ones). 3. Lay the cookies on a nonstick baking pan, or use parchment paper to avoid sticking. 4. Bake for 13 mins or until golden. 5. Serve plain or dust some powdered sugar on top.

Dairy & Sugar Free Peanut Butter Chocolate Brownies Ingredients: 2 eggs (for vegan version use 2 bananas) 4 tblsp peanut butter 1/4 tsp baking soda 1/4 tsp baking powder 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder 1/2 cup all-purpose flour 1/2 cup almond butter or (1/2 cup butter for original recipe) 1/2 cup honey or (1/2 cup sugar) 1/4 cup coconut oil or (1/4 cup vegetable oil for original recipe) 1 tsp vanilla 1/2 tsp salt Instructions 1. Beat the eggs, honey, almond butter, vegetable oil and vanilla in a bowl, then set aside. 2. Mix the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt and cocoa together. 3. Add the wet ingredients to the dry and then mix all together, until incorporated. The consistency will be very thick, that’s ok. 4. Spread the brownie batter into a 9 x 9 inch square pan, spread the batter well using a spatula.

Words by Sarah Dheays, Diary of a Lifestyle Mommy www.Diaryofalifestylemommy.com Instagram: diaryofalifestylemommy Twitter: @lifestylemommy1 Pinterest: Sarahdheays

5. Drop a spoon of peanut butter on top of the brownie batter, you can leave it as it is or use a skewer to form a marble effect, either way is fine. 6. Bake for 15 minutes, then set aside to cool, cut and serve.

The Great Tomahawk Challenge

10 | DINING AND NIGHTLIFE ABU DHABI

M

arco Pierre White Steakhouse and Grill located at the Fairmont Bab Al Bahr has launched their new menu, The Great Steak Out, available every Wednesday from 6.00pm. Enjoy a succulent steak with sides and beverages starting from AED 195*. The menu features a variety of premium cuts from Certified Black Angus Beef to USDA prime striploin. All steaks are served with Italian veal sausages, triple cooked chips, crispy parmesan and herb onion rings, garlic sautéed mushrooms, asparagus, baby carrots, sautéed spinach, potato dauphinoise and tomatoes confit. Steaks are cooked as per guest preference and include a choice of four sauces, such as peppercorn, mushroom or classic bordelaise. Also featured on the menu is The Great Tomahawk Challenge. Meat lovers take note. This sets diners with a challenge of eating 1kg (yes that’s correct 1kg, it’s not a typo) of chargrilled Tomahawk steak. Served with all the above sides, this also comes with a choice of 1 litre beverage. The challenge states that you must clear your plate and finish the beverage within 30 minutes. If you do so your meal is FREE! And you are awarded with a parting gift. If you don’t finish in time you will need to pay for the meal. Naively we decided to take the challenge. As we waited for the meal to arrive we assured ourselves that 1kg ‘can’t be that much’, as we smiled, nodded and yes fist pumped at the thought of us (I quote) smashing it! Before our dish arrived the team presented us with a beautiful sharing antipasto platter, olives, mini caesar salads, mozzarella, mini pizzas, cheese, grapes, bruschetta and beef bresaola. The platter was delicious, fresh ingredients beautifully presented on a large wooden board. If we weren’t about to take The Great Tomahawk Challenge we would have enjoyed more of this delectable starter. Our plate arrived. The Tomahawk steak sat prominently on the plate surrounded by a myriad of sides. Suddenly we began to not feel so confident. Our strategy was simple chew each bite at least 20 times, ensuring good digestion and hopefully securing our triumph. The countdown began and the timer was set. First we cut into our 1kg of Tomahawk steak, delicious layers of beef melted in our mouth with every bite. Wanting to explore more of the plate we moved onto the veal Italian sausages. These were sublime and by far the nicest sausages we have tasted in a while. Up next the fries, baby carrots and asparagus. This was completed in a few swift mouthfuls. The mushrooms and onion rings were easily enjoyed along with the garlic mash. 15 minutes into the challenge we started to slow down and reached for our beverage. The hardest part of the challenge proved to be the spinach, potato dauphinoise and the Tomahawk steak itself. These were the largest items on the plate. As the sand slowly trickled down the last few moments of our timer, we realized that we were beat. The food had won. Overall the food was delicious and the team were extremely friendly and welcoming. The Great Steak Out menu offers premium steaks in beautiful surroundings at a very good price. What more could you ask for? Although we didn’t win The Great Tomahawk Challenge we did have a fabulous dining experience and one that we will remember forever. Located in Park Rotana, Teatro’s menu blends East and West. Before you turn the pages of their quirky designed menu we would highly suggest you order the wasabi prawn tempura, roast duck spring rolls with plum hoisin sauce and the yellow tail tartar. The wasabi prawns are some of the largest juiciest prawns we have had the pleasure of enjoying, as for the roast duck spring rolls, well they are the best in the city. Worth highlighting is the yellow tail tartar served in crispy gyoza shells and seasoned with tom yam marinade and guacamole. It’s refreshing to see that finally a chef as taken a creative approach to yellow tail. Teatro also offers a selection of healthy, yet tasty salads for diners wanting to enjoy a guilt free meal. Order the sakura salad, a simple dish serving marinated salmon and tuna drizzled in Japanese vinaigrette full of delicious mouth-watering flavour. The stylish décor and coral tones exude a sense of class and refinement. Be sure to try the blow torch dynamite rolls sure to add a sense of excitement to your dining experience. Catch, 02 611 0909

Rouge In Asia, the colour red symbolizes happiness and good fortune. If you like great sushi, stumbling on Rouge, hidden away in the Hilton Capitol Grand Abu Dhabi, will make you feel quite lucky. Rouge is technically a pan Asian fusion restaurant, but its head chef is well versed in sushi and, if you opt for the sushi platter (16 or 21 pieces), you will not be disappointed by his picks. The selection of signature maki rolls is scant, but they all look quite appetizing, and there is nothing worse than a maki roll menu so long that you are paralysed by choice. Your server will ask if you have any likes or dislikes but, if you don’t, leave your culinary fate in the hands of the chef and you will be rewarded with a fresh, colourful and meticulously plated array of sashimi, nigiri and maki rolls. We particularly like Rouge’s Toro (fatty tuna) sashimi. While this slice is no stranger to any sushi menu in town, an improper cut can leave this fish tasting a bit fishy. Toro is the fatty part of the tuna, found in the belly portion of the fish and in the hands of a skilled sushi chef, the fish melts in your mouth. Make sure you try the sushi at Rouge, but the pan Asian dishes are also not-to-miss if you are craving something cooked. Rouge, 02 617 0000 Toki One of the original Japanese restaurants in town, Toki is still a firm favourite. Located within the Hilton Abu Dhabi, Toki gets big points for its traditional décor and zashiki seating. The cuisine in Toki has a traditional Japanese focus with rare to find items such as the seafood okonomiyaki (Japanese pizza).

Casual Dining Sushi Art Located in The Galleria Mall, Sushi Art is a firm favourite in our casual dining category. Its unpretentious and modern design make it the perfect spot for a quick lunch or a relaxed meal with friends and family. The menu is beautifully designed and we literally had to restrain ourselves from ordering everything from the menu. The Black Angus beef donburi offers layers of finely seared beef atop of a bed of white fluffy rice and marinated in donburi sauce and topped with salad. The entire dish is terrific and tastes splendid even the rice leaves us impressed. When ordering from the sushi menu be sure to try the salmon tartare tulip. As the name suggests fresh slices of avocado form the outside and the salmon tartare and sits onto of a bed of rice, resembling a colourful tulip. Also from the sushi menu try the delicate Wagyu beef with miso sauce and truffle. We thoroughly enjoyed the blend of flavours and this dish is representative of the type of flare you can expect from Sushi Art. From the rolls section of the menu try the crab avocado, spicy lobster and the volcano. These three show stopping rolls are scrumptious. The quality of the ingredients is evident and will leave you feeling like you have just elevated your sushi game. If you live on Reem Island you can also enjoy Sushi Art in the comfort of your own home through their delivery service. Sushi Art offers diners’ luxurious Japanese cuisine at a reasonable price, this only means one thing, you can order more! Sushi Art, 800 220

Sushi Central One of the most popular casual dining sushi venues in Abu Dhabi, Sushi Central has become widely recognised and respected in the city. You’ve probably visited Sushi Central at either their Khalidiya Street or Al Mina Road branch. Both are equally as consistent in delivering tasty, reasonably priced sushi. The tom yum soup is delicious and we love the fact that it has just the right amount of spice that makes it enjoyable, without leaving us reaching for our water. Also noteworthy is the variation on the menu, don’t let the name fool you, Sushi Central offers a lot more than just sushi. Their wide selection of hot dishes ranges from BBQ skewers, katsu, teriyaki to one of our favourite dishes, the beef yaki udon noodles, no one in the city does them quite like Sushi Central. Be sure to leave room for dessert as you will not want to miss the mango maki sweet rolls. Sushi Central, 600 520 007 Jojo Sushi Located in Marina Square, building 8, lobby level, Reem Island Jojo Sushi menu consists of all the favourites such as sashimi, maki rolls and nigiri to name a few. Brunch After check-in we make our way to Urban Kitchen’s Friday Brunch. The lavish ‘Wok With Me’ Friday Brunch features a selection of live cooking stations, traditional Indian tandoor dishes, seafood delicacies, Asian noodle station, succulent roasts, fresh sushi, a range of cheeses and sumptuous Thai inspired desserts. To start our brunch experience we enjoy a selection of fresh oysters and a small side salad. Up next is the roast. I know we should have experienced the Thai inspired dishes but if you were able to see how good the lamb looked you wouldn’t have been able to resist either. Thick cuts of lamb are smothered in fresh mint sauce, topped with gravy and served two large plump Yorkshire puds and a selection of vegetables, divine! For our dessert we decide to try some of the gorgeous Thai inspired desserts. The black sesame seed cake and the pandan sticky rice are our favourite, full of flavour and bursting with colour. This brunch is perfect for families or friends looking for a relaxing Friday brunch with a selection of quality offerings. Kids can enjoy a dedicated play area whilst adults are left to enjoy the delicious dishes and professional service from the Urban Kitchen team. Deluxe Room After our delicious brunch we make our way to the room. For our visit we are residing in a deluxe room, located on the 21st floor. We take the main elevator and hold our breath. The elevator travels steadily up the large atrium, offering splendid views across the city and full plunging views of the hotel atrium and lobby far below. As we enter the room we first explore the bathroom. The bathroom offers floor to ceiling beige marble, a large bath tub, a huge walk-in shower with a rain shower and showerhead, a large mirror, a selection of toiletries and a hairdryer. The bedroom has an abundance of natural light which compliments the warm and welcoming Thai inspired décor. The room also features’ a flat screen TV, a working desk and tea and coffee making facilities. The quaint desk and large seat next to the window offers a prime position to take in the views spanning across the city and the Eastern Mangroves. The room is spacious and the golden tones add a hint of luxury without being pretentious. The bed is large and comfortable. The crispy white sheets and smell of fresh linen is inviting but we must shower and make our way to the spa.

Dining Tonight we have chosen to dine at The Capital Grill. The chic upscale restaurant boasts a large sophisticated bar serving a selection of creative beverages, guests are invited to enjoy a beverage before proceeding to their table. The restaurant is decorated in deep metallic grey tones and illuminated by the bright red tiled open kitchen. Seats are large and comfortable and tables are beautifully set. To begin our meal we are offered a large warm bun with a selection of carefully crafted butters, this is enjoyed whilst we wait for our starters to arrive. For starters we have ordered the chefs recommendation the Capital Mushrooms, cream cheese stuffed breaded Portobello mushroom with mixed seasonal mushrooms tossed in garlic and the Soft Shell Crab, with tomato chilli jam and lime aioli, cucumber and carrot strips radish pomegranate and corn salad. The Capital Mushroom is delicious. As our knife cuts into the large breaded Portobello mushroom a lava of cream cheese oozes across our plate. This dish tastes as good as it looks as we take our first bite our mouth is filled with rich cream cheese, crisp breadcrumbs, and earthy mushroom. For mains we order the Australian Wagyu Livingstone Striploin 250gr Marble 7-8 and the Irish John Stone Grass Fed 21 day dry aged tenderloin 220gr both cooked medium well. For our side dishes we select the garlic mushrooms, steamed broccoli and steamed vegetables. Both steaks are cooked to perfection and presented beautifully. The succulent meat offers an exuberant taste that delights bite after bite. The sides are well presented and compliment the steak. Finally for dessert we order a selection of sorbet and the Cheese Board. The Cheese Board features a selection of fine cheeses, smoked Carrigaline cheddar, Gorgonzola, French Camembert, fig compote, delicious crackers and full bodied grapes. Overall The Capital Grill provided a wonderful dining experience. If you haven’t dined here we would highly recommend visiting. The steaks are some of the best we have tasted in the city and the service is on par. The Verdict Dusit Thani Abu Dhabi provides a fantastic range of dining venues and a wonderful spa. So whether you are looking for a relaxing staycation or travelling on business we would highly recommend visiting Dusit Thani Abu Dhabi. Al Bathna Restaurant Sunday Seafood Night This was our first time visiting the Armed Forces Officers Club and Hotel but I can assure you, it will not be our last, as we have discovered one of the best seafood nights we have ever experienced in Abu Dhabi. As we enter Al Bathna Restaurant we are warmly greeted by Executive Chef Karsten Gottschalk. A German native, Executive Chef Karsten has worked in the region for decades. Chef begins to describe his masterful creations and our anticipation quickly grows. As we explore the numerous stations we are amazed by the scale and variety of options available. Ten stations are divided into a fresh seafood salad bar, sushi, made to order salad, grilled seafood, international cuisine, Indian, South-East Asian, made to order crepes, international desserts and Arabic desserts. The buffet boasts the finest seafood from, oysters, Omani lobster, ceviche, steamed crab to succulent grilled jumbo prawns. If seafood isn’t your favourite cuisine don’t worry, also on offer is a selection of pizza, curries, noodles and soups. To start we make our way to the seafood salad bar. All the seafood salad is well presented, sat atop of blue glass plates and sprinkled with finely chopped capsicums for a splash of colour. We pick up our plates and select a mix of seafood salad, large prawns mixed with seafood sauce, ceviche, squid salad, tuna teriyaki, and fattoush. The freshness of each dish is undeniable and the playful flavours invigorate our palate. My personal favourite is the prawns and seafood sauce. Chunky prawns layered in beautiful thick unapologetic seafood sauce, divine! Curious to try the sushi we select a mix of California and shrimp maki rolls. These do not disappoint. Up next the grilled Omani lobster. From grill to plate the process is simple but the taste is phenomenal. The thick white meat has been cooked to perfection. We enjoy this so much that we go back for a second helping. The team here are extremely friendly and welcoming, we feel like regulars as our server Jon engages in conversation and Rajan the food and beverage manager passes by to say hi. As we venture to the Indian cuisine corner we cannot resist the dal fry. Served with warm, clay, oven baked naan the dal tempered lentils smell sensational. We fill our bowl and return to our table. The grittiness of the lentils is complimented by the rich aroma and we enjoy our serving. Having slightly overindulged we take a moment to rest. OK we didn’t rest, we walked around the dessert counter, but we did spend a while weighing up our options. For those wanting to eat well a large fruit selection is available. For everyone else head straight for the Arabic sweets, you will not be disappointed. We select the shobiat bil kishta, zenoid zeit and the kanafeh. The shobiat bil kishta are small puff pastry triangles oozing with a sweet cream filling, the zenoid zeit is similar in taste but is shaped in a roll and the filling is slightly heavier but equally as delicious. The kanafeh, for those who haven’t yet had the pleasure, consists of a white cheese base topped with rich semolina pastry and soaked in sweet rosewater syrup, it is mouth-watering. Overall Al Bathna Restaurant is definitely one of Abu Dhabi’s hidden gems. Discover this wonderful restaurant with its friendly staff and great cuisine and you will not be disappointed. Abu Dhabi’s Four Best Afternoon Teas If there’s one thing we Brits do well its afternoon tea, a tradition that’s been recognised and adopted by hotels, restaurants and cafes worldwide. Perfectly cut finger sandwiches, scones topped with cream and jam (or jam and cream if you prefer, depending on your scone etiquette), delicate cakes, all washed down with a pot of tea. There’s just something special about this indulgent ritual, undoubtedly a perfect way to enjoy an afternoon with friends, family and visitors. Most Abu Dhabi hotels have embraced afternoon tea in some form or another, whether it's a traditional affair or a completely new experience devised by a celebrity chef, a themed extravaganza or a restaurant high in the sky there is something that suits everyone's taste and budget. I have been lucky enough to sample some of those on offer and here are my favourite four of the moment. While they may not be Claridges or The Ritz in London they do a fine job of replicating the quintessential British tradition of the taking of tea in the afternoon. Le Royal Méridien offers a rather lavish affair created by celebrity baker to the stars Eric Lanlard. Hosted in Stratos, the revolving restaurant gifts diners a fabulous 360 degree panoramic view of the city and beyond. Don’t expect your standard crustless sandwiches at this bespoke ‘Soir D’Orient’ afternoon tea. This afternoon tea offers a real treat for your taste buds, with Middle Eastern flavours such as saffron, rose water, dates, cardamom, cumin, pistachios, bee pollen and caraway seeds all incorporated into the sweet and savoury selections reflecting the region’s cuisine and heritage. Before beginning guests are sprayed with a specially created edible cardamom perfume, evoking the feeling of being in an Arabian spice souk. Savoury options include cumin and pumpkin macarons, black pepper crab tarts and vanilla cured Scottish salmon on beetroot and caraway seed bread. The remainder of the four-tier stand features scones of orange blossom with bee pollen and the delightful raw cacao and raspberries. Pistachio financiers with Persian rose nectar, glazed pink lychee and raspberry domes and dark chocolate cannelloni are just some of the sweet options. A gastronomic experience of culinary art in an unrivalled position high above the city is available at Stratos for a limited time so if you have a celebration or occasion coming reserve yourself a table. Afternoon tea will never taste, smell or look the same again. Afternoon Tea by Eric Lanlard starts from AED 195*. Le Royal Méridien, 800 101 101 The St Regis Saadiyat Island Resort serves a rather splendid fashion inspired afternoon tea as well as themed menus for various events throughout the year, all served in the sophisticated setting of the Drawing Room. Fancy bone china, gold crest emblazoned napkins and glorious views, this afternoon tea blends the more traditional favourites such as miniature finger sandwiches, freshly baked scones and small-scale sweet treats with a fashionable twist such as mini edible tiffany boxes and chocolate covered handbag shaped cakes. The St Regis has a long term association with afternoon tea, as it was invented by the mother of St Regis founder, Lady Astor. Her legacy is well honoured at this resort, a timeless tradition that even offers guests two unique TWG blends including the St Regis Arabian Tea Blend, a red tea blended with aromatic Arabic spices and the Iridium Spa Tea Blend, a caffeine free blend with notes of almond and sweet orange named after the hotel spa. Afternoon Tea starts from AED 140* per person including a selection of tea and coffee. The St Regis Saadiyat Island Resort, 02 498 8888 26 | DINING AND NIGHTLIFE ABU DHABI

The iconic leaning tower of Abu Dhabi aka the Hyatt Capital Gate has a more traditional style afternoon tea served in the Lounge on the eighteenth floor. Here you will find your crustless sandwiches, lightly dusted scones and British favourites such as Battenberg cake. The Lounge afternoon tea is a simple affair embracing traditional style afternoon tea served on a three tiered stand, no gimmicks or themes just a selection of savoury and sweet treats and a range of premium teas, coffees and a cheeky sparkling beverage if you so desire. Scottish smoked salmon on brown soda bread, pesto chicken on sundried tomato bread, mini brioche rolls filled with egg mayonnaise and chive are offered along with sandwiches filled with slices of datterino tomato and cucumber. Sweet treats include rosewater macaroons, mini lemon cheesecakes, chocolate cones and berry tarts with pistachios as well as the scones accompanied by an array of jams, marmalades, lemon curd and clotted cream. Afternoon Tea starts from AED 165 net and includes selected beverages. Hyatt Capital Gate, 02 596 1234 Jumeirah at Etihad Towers serves afternoon tea at its Observation Deck at 300 located on the 74th floor. Guests can observe the skyline and panoramic vista from a new perspective at the city’s highest vantage point with floor-to-ceiling glass windows while enjoying a refined afternoon tea experience at this elegant restaurant. Savouries, gourmet sandwiches, delicate cakes and pastries are served on classic striped pastel blue crockery alongside scones on a dramatic tiered chrome and glass stand. Homemade pastries include summer pudding, strawberry tartlets, brownies, English fruit cake and Scottish nut cake, accompanied by a range of specialty teas by TWG Tea Grand Crus Prestige exclusive blends such as Silver Moon Tea, Brothers Club Tea and White House Tea. As well as the teas there are coffees, juices and a range of mocktails including a signature concoction of peach purée, apple juice, elderflower syrup, soda and fresh fruit cuts known as the Etihad Sparkler. Afternoon High Tea is AED 175* per person. Jumeirah at Etihad Towers, 02 811 5666 *Subject to 10% service charge and 6% tourism fee.

Filini Having opened it doors about seven years ago, Filini is a grand matron of Abu Dhabi’s off island Italian dining scene, a lot has changed since then. Flashy rivals have opened up all over town, but Filini is unfazed; it continues to do what it does so well and is rewarded nightly with a buzzing terrace of regulars. It’s so buzzing that the night that we choose to try it, the outdoors terrace is full, despite there being the odd potential for rain. We sit in a two-seater with a sweeping view of the city’s skyline. A server named Rose, whose exemplary service begs a mention, greets us immediately. She knows her menu well and helps us navigate the Italian menu. Chef Luca also comes around and weighs in. Understanding our preferences, the two guide us toward a small array of “nibbles” (the starters before the starters), starters and mains. If Italians are known for tables that runneth over with food, this two-seater is going to be too small for what we just ordered. And so it begins. Filini’s service team brings an array of small bowls. It’s readily apparent that we are taking a culinary tour of Italy, one bowl at a time. The bowls contain bresaola, cheeses, marinated octopus, calamari, clams, mussels, green salads and ceviche. There is also a plate of garlicky flatbread. We dive into the tapas; almost forgetting this this is just the nibble before the starter. Chef Luca calls the gnocchi verdi (gnocchi spinach) in Taleggio and Gorgonzola cream sauce, “a stomach cleanser.” It’s a little daunting, after all those nibbles, but once we have a taste we have no choice but to savor every bite. The sauce is tangy and the gnocchi are firm and fresh. For our mains we thought we had ordered a simple salmon and sea bass, but this main is plated on a lacy bed of octopus carpaccio. The fish is grilled to perfection and the octopus bed is flavorful and elegant. The lamb chops and beef filet medallion are served with three different sauces: red grape sauce, balsamic sauce and a garlic sauce. The sauces are almost an afterthought as the meat is so perfectly cut and cooked. Two more plates wiped clean and just when we thought we were done, Rose asks us what we’d like to try for dessert. Out instincts are to quit while we are ahead, but Rose’s dessert descriptions have us drooling. Against our better judgment, we are coaxed into a chocolate fondant and a tiramisu. They arrive quickly. While we intend to just have a taste of each the oozing perfect little pudding, the molten chocolate erupts and we feel compelled to lap it up. On the other hand, the cool tiramisu is a velvety pick-me-up. We are compelled to dig deep through the creamy mascarpone layer for the coffee sodden ladyfingers. Taking a meal at Filini is akin to travel. The restaurant features different regions of Italy from month-to-month, but the standard menu is rife with delicacies from the entire country and one would be wise to approach the menu nibble by nibble, heeding the advice of the well-informed and fun staff. Gourmet BBQ 55&5th The Grill 55&5th The Grill located in The St. Regis Saadiyat Island Resort has the feeling of an exclusive club of a bygone era. The place oozes luxury from the glamourous chandeliers to the rich leather booths that one can imagine filled with CEOs, foreign dignitaries and well-heeled couples, celebrating a very special occasion. However no need to dust off your best gown or tuxedo just yet. If you are looking for a casual mid-week meal 55&5th The Grill has introduced a Wednesday evening Gourmet BBQ, so inviting we predict instant success. It’s best experienced on the terrace, dressed smart casual and surrounded by family and friends. Far from just a typical steakhouse fare, this 4 course menu features oysters Rockefeller, sea bass en papillote, lobster and venison in addition to steak. And these are not just options; this is what every diner who opts for the BBQ menu over the a la carte is served in sharing portions. A well-choreographed staff meets, greets and seats us in moments. They are swift to take our beverage order and, more importantly, to offer a sound opinion on grape options, not to mention a quick overview of both the BBQ and a la carte menu, if you are struggling to decide. We opt for the evening special as we are seated on the lovely terrace under the stars and it just feels right. In addition to that, it appears varied enough to suit both of our palates. Once the starters arrive, we need to sit back and take it all in. There is a lot of food in front of us and this is just the first course. The oysters Rockefeller are unlike any we have seen before, artfully prepared and plated. They contain creamed spinach and chorizo, which sounds like a less than subtle contrast but, rather than overpowering the divine sea jewel, the flavours complement the finish of the briny oyster. There are also two rich duck sliders on toasted brioche buns. The duck is laden with chanterelle mushrooms and laced with fig and ginger, a combination so flavorful and rich, we would have been happy with this as a main. A warm beetroot complements this course. We would call this salad a palate cleanser or a calm between the meat storms were it not for the moreish slices of NY strip steak salad gracing the roots and greens. Sea bass en papillote is served as an intermission between the fine cuts of meats and, well, more fine cuts of meat. Steam bursts from the foil as our server theatrically presents the delicately sauced fillet to us. It’s seasoned with tarragon, shallot and French beverage and it’s mouth-watering. When it comes to the main event, we are served an elegantly plated New Zealand venison cutlet with dots of a divinely rich espresso-colored caramelized onion, garlic purée and a perfectly seared chateaubriand accompanied by an array of premium mustards and the 55&5th signature BBQ sauce. But we needed no sauce for these meats. Torrents of flavor course through not only the impossibly tender beef but also through the game and mind-changing venison. Often thought gamy and tough, this venison cutlet is marinated in aromatic herbs and juniper. It takes the confirmation of two servers to convince my companion that this is deer meat. The chateaubriand arrives with grilled corn of the cob, asparagus and delicious garlic roasted wild mushrooms. If that already sounds like several meals to you, be sure to save room for the decadent lobster mac and cheese and the toothsome potato gratin. And, oh my, the NY cheesecake is a must, but it’s not for the faint of heart, small of stomachs or those on calorie plans. From start to finish, the Gourmet BBQ at 55&5th The Grill is a masterpiece of a midweek meal. If you enjoy inventive flavor pairings, artful presentation and impeccable service in a casual atmosphere be sure to visit. AED 350* per person, BBQ only, every Wednesday 7.00pm to 10.00pm. 55&5th The Grill The St. Regis Saadiyat Island Resort 02 498 8443 *Price subject to 10% service charge and 6% tourism fee.
