VaKaVa, Authentic Latin American Cuisine

18 | Dining and Nightlife Middle East

For a midweek evening, VaKaVa Pan Latin Grill and Lounge at Conrad Abu Dhabi Etihad Towers certainly has a weekend feel about it. Brainchild of Mexican celebrity Chef Richard Sandoval, your tastebuds are in for an incredibly authentic culinary tour of Latin America. VaKaVa takes you on a journey from the ceviches of Peru and the street food of Mexico and Venezuela, to the famous grills of Brazil and Argentina – all combined with a complementary touch of Japanese nikkei and sushi influence.

A combination of dishes roll out onto our intimate table for two. First the spectacle that is the Smoked Guacamole; it is deliciously creamy, with just the right amount of seasoning, and the side of lightly salted nacho chips make the perfect dipping companion. Next comes a sweep of delightful sharing starters; a refreshing Scallop Tiradito (Tiradito is a Peruvian take on sashimi, with a spicy citrus sauce) topped lovingly with delicately sliced asparagus, thinly sliced red chilli and sprigs of seaweed. Alongside it comes the equally delicious Avocado Tiradito topped with cucumber, yuzu, soy sauce, virgin olive oil caviar and cilantro.

In a dining concept that is designed to encourage sharing and connecting, VaKaVa combines unique flavours which can be found An uplifting Beetroot Salad and a beautifully presented pair of Al across the menu snacks, ceviches, tiraditos and tartares, sushi selection and salads, tacos, robata grills and desserts. The perfect Pastor Zucchini Tacos join our feast. Served on a bed of avocado espuma, shaved red onion, grilled pineapple and cilantro, these way to try a little bit of everything. mouth-wateringly tasty vegan tacos are well worth returning for. The venue is a spectacular and extensive two-storey spot where we enjoy dining indoors under the warm and welcoming tones of As we continue to resist the urge to dance to the South dark mahogany, deep reds, burnt orange and teal décor, and later American rhythms, our feast continues. Butterfish Anticucho the ultimate evening under the stars at one of the best outdoor which are seared to perfection and served skewered on a bed of terrace spaces we have seen in Abu Dhabi! With beautiful views of chimichurri. Lit up by accompanied lightly piquant chimichurri the open water and a spirited Latin American soundtrack that just sauce, one of the main highlights is the basket of Corn makes you want to get up and dance, there’s no need for anything Empanadas - a warm and crispy crust stuffed with a delicious else to get you in the mood for a wonderful evening ahead. combination of sweetcorn, aji and manchego cheese.

20 | Dining and Nightlife Middle East

We are also pleasantly surprised by the Pan Seared Salmon, which is served with achiote ponzu, cauliflower puree, bock choy and mushrooms. Accompanying our protein, a generously-sized Kale Salad which encompasses fresh, crunchy kale leaves, orange white balsamic vinaigrette, heirloom tomatoes, Spanish manchego cheese and ruby red pomegranate jewels. We also tuck into some of the Grilled Avocado served with fragrant corn pico de gallo. Something entirely new to our palette are the Cachapas, an indulgent Venezuelan sweetcorn pancake bursting with halloumi cheese and sour cream; its rich flavour and fluffy texture is perfectly complemented by the coolness of the salsa served alongside it. This is - without a doubt - the star of the show. Despite a pleasantly full stomach, I simply cannot resist ending on a sweet note. While we certainly enjoy the moist, rose-infused Red Velvet Tres Leches, VakaVa’s dessert menu has us at Churro. Homemade Churros, dulce de leche sauce and goats cheese ice-cream bring so much contentment for our meal finale.

To conclude, VaKaVa is everything (and more) you would expect from a Pan- Latin American restaurant, and uber trendy without being over-the-top. From the food to the ambience, to the inherently welcoming and attentive restaurant team, it is the closest you will get to an authentic taste of Latin America in the capital. Rave Rooftop Reviews For Clap

22 | Dining and Nightlife Middle East

DIFC is always a favourite dining destination, but in general, a highly competitive location to open a successful restaurant. So, what does new to the market Clap have to offer? We stopped in to see.

and perhaps even a bit overwhelming. There should be something for every taste, which is what makes our decisions difficult. Similarly, the beverage menu is broken down into several innovative concoctions.

Hailing from Beirut, the Japanese inspired restaurant can be found in Gate Village 11, directly above Shanghai Me. The entrance to Clap is separate, with a private dedicated lift to whisk visitors up to the largest rooftop in DIFC. Once inside, guests are greeted with stunning views of the surrounding skyscrapers - including the Burj Khalifa on one side and the iconic Emirates Towers on the other. Broken into three distinct spaces, Clap consists of a dining room and terrace, a lounge, and an interior bar, Ongaku. The large space can accommodate up to 300 guests under current social distancing regulations. The interior has elements of traditional Japanese culture, while remaining contemporary in design, menu, and overall vision. There is eclectic decor throughout, including a chandelier made from 2,100 toys hanging in the reception area and a conveyor belt of assorted toys also journeys around the bar area, causing guests to look up as the interior impresses with soaring ceilings.

Given the 141 different dishes (!), we speak with our waitress to explain some of our favourite proteins, and she builds a menu around our preferences. We begin with Padron Peppers, which are beautifully presented with sweet honey miso sauce and sesame seeds. Honestly, we think this is our favourite version in Dubai, and the size of the peppers is worth noting. Served along with this dish is a bite from the crispy rice menu, the Salmon Masago, one we would definitely order again. The Seabass Ceviche is a hit with my dining partner, who loves the mix of coconut milk, mango, amazu, red onion and coriander. We’re also given a Scallop Sashimi, which arrives with avocado purée, basil, lime and yuzu sakura mix. We could use just a bit more salt with the sashimi, but otherwise, it’s a dish we would happily order again.

Taking a seat on the dining room patio, we’re treated to birds-eye views of DIFC, it would be well worth a visit for a date night or anniversary. Also, we’re not going to lie; the menu is impressive

We move onto other starters, including a stunning platter of Toro, which is flavoured with black truffle oil, yuzu soy, ginger, chives and sesame. Given that some restaurants overwhelm dishes with truffle oil, I respect that Clap goes with a more subtle approach. Served up on a large plate, we receive Scallops and Foie Gras, which are served with mixed berries, vanilla miso sauce and unagi sauce. February | 23

24 | Dining and Nightlife Middle East

The combination of flavours is impressive, and we’re still considering if the pairing works. Perhaps we’ll have to come back and try again. While there is a lot of gyoza available in Dubai, this Wagyu and Foie Gras version includes another exciting flavour combination - this time in the form of dashi parmesan cream and spicy ponzu. It’s a bit of luxe all rolled into one delicious bite. Although we’re nearing capacity, the restaurant sends a platter of sushi, including some of their signature rolls, the Crazy California as well as the sublime Japanese Wagyu Beef nigiri. For a main, we’re given one of the Dubai classics, with a twist, Miso Black Cod Provencal. While we’re always fans of the dish, we can’t help but compare it to certain other neighbours in the area. It’s a competitive dish, and this one doesn’t quite live up to others we’ve tried previously. For dessert, we finish with the Clap Hot Chocolate Cake, which is served with date ice cream, and is quite honestly, perfectly portioned. While our meal sounds (and was) a lot of food, there are whole sections of the Clap menu we didn’t get to try. For those planning a visit, perhaps it’s best to try and few things and then plan for a return (as we plan on doing in the near future).

For those interested in more plant-based options, Clap’s menu also clearly features a vegetarian and vegan-friendly menu with cold and hot starters. Overall, we’re impressed by the service, vibe, and atmosphere. For long-time fans of Zuma, Clap might be a new experience to tempt you away, or at least give you something new to try. Reservations seem essential at this point, so call ahead to avoid any disappointment. Taiko, Elevated Asian Fusion

26 | Dining and Nightlife Middle East

Taiko Dubai is a restaurant I’d heard plenty about before ever setting foot inside the sleek interior. Located at the newish Sofitel the Obelisk, we arrive with an open mind, ready for whatever the kitchen dishes out. The restaurant is a spinoff from the popular Amsterdam original, with Chef Schilo van Coevorden at the helm (and yes, you can still find him in the Dubai location during the year). The contemporary Asian venue is broken into several sections, such that you can enjoy a drink in the lounge (done in dramatic reds and textured walls) before settling into the dining room, complete with bamboo-lined booths. There’s also a sushi bar, should you be so inclined. Seats closest to the large windows overlooking the Wafi Obelisk are the best locations, as they provide sweeping views of the restaurant and outside. As ‘Taiko’ translates from Japanese to ‘drum,’ there are several of these themed drums throughout the restaurant.

There’s the Black Garlic Hummus, and an Edamame Hummus, served with seaweed crackers, we like that even smaller dishes can be elevated or made differently. Many will recognize the Infused Melon, which is drawing interest around town. Flavoured with wasabi and kimchi, it’s a refreshing plate, and one to order. There is no shortage of raw dishes, and continuing on the trend of light bites, we received additional plates, including Watermelon Sashimi. Elevating this simple ingredient in such a moreish way is delicious and interesting, and we love the pace on dishes that aren’t heavy or overwhelming.

In case you’re in the mood for sushi or sashimi, we have to recommend the Shisha Sushi, inspired by a favourite local The drinks menu has plenty of beverages to choose from, many product. The bedroom has a refined yet cosy feel with the timber parquet flooring throughout the room adding a sense of warmth. To begin we opt for the Burrata L’Artigiana, with heirloom tomatoes, smoked eggplant mash, quinoa popcorn and basil oil. We enjoy the eggplant mash, and the use of the quinoa is creative however the Burrata itself isn’t as creamy as we are accustomed to and could almost be mistaken for mozzarella. Staying with the starters, the Bruschetta Burrata (which is much creamier) with tomatoes, pickled shallots, mashed avocado and basil leaves makes for a much more enjoyable starter.

Contemporary Lebanese Flavours At SamakjĂŠ

36 | Dining and Nightlife Middle East

By now, most residents of Dubai have visited The Pointe on Palm Jumeirah. However, with so many restaurants to choose from and a bit of overlap in the categories, selecting where to dine at this destination can be tricky. Today, we approach Samakjé, which translates as ‘fish expert’ in Arabic, and is located on the bottom floor on the east side of The Pointe (where Seafood Kitchen used to be located). There are stunning views of the Arabian Gulf, Atlantis The Palm, and The Palm Fountains on the expansive terrace. The interior of the restaurant is fitted out with calming neutral hues, hanging pendant lights, and a bar outfitted in wood. At the rear of the dining room, we notice a well-stocked fresh fish market-style counter, where guests can pick their personal catch of the day. The downstairs is quite large, making it easier to stagger guests, and we are happy to see all social distancing regulations are in place. My dining partner and I choose a table on the terrace to take advantage of the view and the perfect weather. We look over an extensive menu filled with seafood dishes. Of course, should you be torn between what to order, the staff are knowledgeable and on hand to give advice. Samakjé’s menu showcases both Mediterranean and Levant influences, and there is a range of classic mezze-style dishes (both hot and cold), a unique raw bar

(trust me), soups, salads, and fresh fish. I am delighted to see a selection of raw dishes, including locally sourced Dibba Bay Oysters. I decided to start with the Mediterranean Sashimi (seabass) which arrives with a pomegranate-sumac sauce and other accompaniments. I’m not disappointed by this unique hybrid. Guests can build their own sashimi, and I’m impressed with my abilities. If you are looking to play it safe a Salmon Tartare is available. I don’t think I’ve ever tried Lobster Kibbeh or Hummus Beiruti before. The hummus is rich, creamy, and the texture of the crispy fava beans and herbs make for a uniquely beautiful plate. I also appreciate the basket of freshly baked bread it’s served with. Unfortunately, I could’ve used just a bit more lobster flavour in the kibbeh. We also sample the Rakakat a fried pastry stuffed with cheese and served with a wild cherry dip. There are also a number of classics, including Vine Leaves, a generous portion of Fattoush, and my dining partner is delighted to find Fried Bezri, White Bait, deep fried in a seasonal batter served with a tahini tartar sauce. I’d never tried white bait before but I enjoyed the crispiness and accompanying tahini tartar sauce and fresh lemon. The portion is also generous for a group to split. Worth mentioning, this dish is limited and isn’t always available due to Samakjé only wanting to offer guests the best and freshest seafood. February | 37

For our mains, we opt for the Red Snapper from the fish counter (market price, as all the fish are) and choose to have it grilled, and sauces to accompany, all at the suggestion of our waiter. He also (correctly) thought we might enjoy Grilled Prawns, which are also worth ordering. You will be spoilt for seafood here with offerings ranging from Shrimps, Lady Fish, Seabass, Dover Sole, Red Snapper, Turbot, Squid, Hamour, Sea Bream and Blue Crab, with many more on display.

Having just launched a Weekend Family Lunch offer on Fridays and Saturdays from 12noon to 5.00pm, guests are invited to enjoy a set menu for AED 195, a set menu with free flowing selected beverages for AED 295 and children under 12 can enjoy a special menu for AED 55.

With preparation of the whole Vine Leaves, AED 32 fish, the serving is easily enough for three (or more) people, based Fattoush, AED 29 on how much mezze you’ve indulged in. An Epicurean Tour Of India At Punjab Grill

40 | Dining and Nightlife Middle East

Hands down, Punjab Grill is one of the most sumptuous places to eat authentic Indian food in the capital. As you scan the interior the plush leather seating enclaves, and glistening crystal lighting fixtures line the ceiling, and you swiftly realise that this modern Indian restaurant isn’t just a shiny bauble. Chef Sandeep Ail sees to it that the feast for the eyes extends to your plate.

to our table with a warm welcome and introduction to our meal papadum, dips and the most delicious selection of chutneys, all of which are faultless. I particularly enjoy the sweet tamarind dip. It is bright, it is fresh, packed with flavour and other subtler hints of spice.

Our meal begins with an assortment of starters including Palak Patta Chaat which features a crisp, fried spinach leaf topped with liquid baubles containing raw mango, tamarind, yoghurt, and raspberry sauces – each yummy on their own, but I personally enjoy mixing all the flavours for a palatable bite. A dish worthy of an award is the Watermelon Slider. When you think of watermelon, it’s only natural to imagine a sweet dessert or perhaps even a welcome accompaniment to breakfast, or a lunchtime salad. But no, Chef Sandeep Ail takes it two steps Here, you will embark on a true epicurean journey, where the further with this incredible concoction made with fresh seedless menu is inspired by food from gourmet metropolises and states like Mumbai, Kundapur, Goa and Patiala. With his extensive watermelons from Australia, served with bean sprout chaat, a understanding of Indian cuisine, as well as its versatility, Executive sprinkle of pomegranate jewels, fresh herbs and finished off with Chef Sandeep Ail ensures that the menu at Punjab Grill is a perfect watermelon foam. This could quite possibly be one of the best balance of both traditional and modern impressions of Indian food. things we’ve ever tasted. Renowned across the Indian subcontinent for gourmet fine dining, and with more than ten restaurants worldwide, Punjab Grill’s presence in the Venetian Village was the first to open its doors in the Middle East. Punjab Grill presents authentic, traditional Indian cuisine with a blend of 21st-century flavours and presentation – certainly, a welcome treat for all the senses.

Whilst the restaurant has an incredibly romantic outdoor seating area with far reaching views of the water, we decide to escape the chill of the evening air and dine within the welcoming ambience of the restaurant. Within minutes of taking a seat, our server arrives

Our Indian feast also includes Handcrafted Roasted Pumpkin Bread, Spice Crusted Tuna, Chicken Tikka Trio, Mushroom and Turnip Shawrma with Roomali Roti and Colocassia Dumpling. No matter what the dish, each and every plate is terrific on the aromatics.

Next on to the entrees and main courses. My partner is presented with Kundapur Lamb Chops served with grilled rainbow carrots and topped with a tangy nilgiri korma. For myself, a vast vegetarian spread which includes Paneer Tikka Masala, comprising of cottage cheese cubes dipped in a semi-spicy, rich and creamy tomato-based gravy, gorgeous presentation, and a fabulous combination of flavours and textures. Dal Makhani (dark lentils cooked in a dreamy, buttery sauce), Dum Aloo (spicy cubes of potato) and a mildly-spiced creamed spinach. All of which arrived at the table beautifully presented in a rainbow of colours, just as nature intended. Desserts are also delicious, with a delightful trio of Masala Chai, Ginger and Chocolate Miniature Cakes and an Almond Halwa infused with mango and saffron, being just the right combination of sweet and refreshing to round off a very filling meal.

Palak Patta Chaat, AED 50 Watermelon Slider, Sprouts Chaat, AED 50 Hand Crafted Roast Pumpkin Bread, AED 40 Spice Crusted Tuna, AED 65 Chicken Tikka Trio, AED 120 Mushroom and Turnip Shawrma with Roomali Roti, AED 80 Colocassia Dumpling, AED 85 Chaamp Taajdar (Lamb Chops), AED 175 Paneer Mutter, AED 90 Dal Makhani, AED 65 Dum Aloo, AED 85 Breads, AED 20 each Pulao Rice, AED 45 Masala Chai, Ginger, Chocolate, AED 40 Almond Halwa, Mango and Saffron, AED 40 Punjab Grill, Venetian Village, Abu Dhabi, +971 2 449 9839

While there is no shortage of great Indian restaurants in Abu Dhabi, Punjab Grill certainly poses some great competition. The decor is stunning, cooking is confident, and presentation beautiful. For a story and comfort food, from cheesy naans to fine desserts, Punjab Grill is the perfect choice.

Cove Beach, Stylish Oceanside Dining

44 | Dining and Nightlife Middle East

For a mid-week lunchtime treat, we head to the recently opened and incredibly picturesque beachfront lounge of Two.0 by Cove Beach, located in the Makers District Abu Dhabi on Al Reem Island. The brand-new licensed beach club is Cove Beach’s second venue, following the ever-popular location at Bluewaters, Dubai.

pool and beach, the atmosphere is simple and understated, but evidently luxe with a minimalistic cool-factor. Wooden decking creates a sand-free way to get around the beach club, with the pathway leading you past the beachfront to the large pool which offers more of a party atmosphere.

Beautifully manicured gardens set the scene for a chilled afternoon escape, with a well-dressed 100-seat al fresco restaurant and lounge, serving up refreshing beverages, fresh Mediterranean cuisine with a modern Japanese seafood twist. In an all-encompassing oceanfront experience, an infinity pool set within the ocean offers seemingly endless views of the turquoise waters, while plush loungers, beach beds and cabanas dotted between the beachfront and pool welcome up to 1,000 guests at a time.

We take a seat at Two.0 where we reminisce on the ‘good old days’ with the fabulous 90’s R&B soundtrack that had us dancing in our chairs and singing along the entire time we are there. After some time deliberating over the menu, we eventually decide on a couple of smoothies to get our tastebuds flowing. I opt for the Acai Kick (with Acai mango, blueberry and banana) which has all the flavours of a guilty treat, but the ingredients fit for a true health enthusiast. Meanwhile my lunchtime date opts for a green pick-me-up, the Green Machine; packed with fresh green goodies – spinach, broccoli, celery, mango, banana and pineapple. We snack on a bowl of Edamame as we wait for our dishes to arrive.

While the beach club vibes yell glitz and glamour, the complex as a whole has a laid-back island-holiday-inspired feel about it. A mostly light grey and cream palette complement the ivory coastline, while the beachy wooden details and cheery staff are visible throughout the palm tree-lined space, in an almost-tropical feel. From the cushioned chairs you sink into at the restaurant/lounge to the walkway that transports you from the dining area out to the

For our meal, we order a portion of freshly prepared soft cheese Gnocchi which arrives to our table beautifully presented with a creamy Provençale sauce, asparagus, artichoke crisps and basil leaves. enjoyed in the Abu Dhabi winter sun. Piping hot and served with a ‘just-caught’ flavour, the highlight of our meal is undoubtedly the oven baked Hamour, which has its flavour elevated by the delectable Provençale sauce, grilled vegetables and the complementary zing of a citrus sauce. The freshness, quality and portion sizes are all reasonable. There is an array of dishes on the menu to choose from including sashimi and nigiri, burgers, salads and even Argentinian rib-eye and prime USDA steaks, although you can’t seem to go wrong with any dish.

afternoon, an evening wind-down or a chilled-out weekend, Cove Beach promises an incredible time with spanning ocean views and a diverse menu. Prices for weekdays are AED 200 with AED 200 back to spend on food and beverage. Prices for weekends are AED 300 with AED 300 back to spend on food and beverage. If you really want to go all out a private cabana will cost you AED 1,000 minimum spend on weekdays and AED 2,000 on weekends and is limited to 4 people.

The desserts look and taste fantastic and finish our oceanside lunch on a great high. We indulge in the Valrhona Chocolate Fondant which comes served warm (and gooey in the middle) with a side of vanilla ice cream. We also select a portion of the Napoleon Cake; a soft hazelnut sponge with milk chocolate and homemade chocolate ice-cream, all washed down with a cappuccino.
