Loca

12 | Dining and Nightlife Abu Dhabi

New to Abu Dhabi’s dining scene, Mexican restaurant, Loca, is located at The Galleria, hidden just beneath the Four Seasons Hotel. Loca’s décor is a blend of edgy urban meets industrial warehouse, exposed brick walls and large piping feature heavily. Guests can choose to sit inside or dine al fresco on the outdoor terrace. This high-end restaurant cum sports bar offers something for everyone. Sports fanatics will enjoy the TV screens showing all the sports, foodies will love experiencing authentic Mexican cuisine and nightlife seekers will enjoy the traditional frozen Mexican beverages and a lively atmosphere. To start, we order Loca’s popular Guacamole. Prepared tableside and served with warm corn chips and salsa. Some of the avocados are imported from Mexico, depending on the seasonality, with others coming from Peru and Australia. Australia tends to have the best avocados as the texture, color and taste are more prominent. From the first bite, it’s clear that Loca only uses the best avocados for its Guacamole. The technic used, mashing, not blending, contributes to thick chunky delicious mouthfuls. Guacamole will never be the same again, Loca has raised the bar. Also from the appetizers we sample the De Pescado and the Quesadillas. The De Pescado ceviche, is made with salmon, mango, papaya, tomatoes, red onion and cilantro, the dish is light, fresh and zesty. The Quesadillas come in three options, we select the oyster mushrooms and Oaxaca cheese Quesadilla. A generous portion, the oyster mushrooms offer a deep flavor whilst the Oaxaca cheese, originally from Mexico, tastes similarly like Monterey Jack. The Quesadilla does come with a side of Guacamole but it’s nowhere near as impressive as the freshly made tableside version we experienced at the start of our meal. Moving onto the mains, we select the Loca Ribs and the El Rancho Tamales. The ribs are succulent, slow roasted shortribs served in Loca’s chipotle guajillo bbq sauce, offering a multitude of flavors and textures. The Tamales are the real star of the show, this is the first time we have seen this traditional Mexican dish on the menu anywhere in Abu Dhabi. Tamales are made from a homemade corn masa and steamed in a corn husk. The El Rancho Tamales is stuffed with slow marinated adobo beef tenderloin and served with a side of de la olla beans and rice. This dish is warm comfort food at its best. The only issue is that the portion is so large we only manage to eat half of it. As we ponder over which dessert to select Chef Salvador Gomez passes by and asks if we need any assistance. Who better than the man himself to help us with this big decision. After some consideration chef kindly puts together a sample of all five desserts. Note to self always be very nice to chefs, they feed you nice things. From the five desserts, we narrowed our favorites down to two, the Bedel Tres Leches and the Banana Empanada. The Banana Empanada, banana turnover is served piping hot, drizzled in sweet cream, cinnamon sugar and a scoop of vanilla ice-cream. If you like warm desserts this is the one to go for. The Bedel Tres Leches is the traditional Mexican three-milk cake served with chocolate ice-cream. Forget the chocolate ice-cream, the cake itself is amazing, moist and full of flavor this is one dessert you will not want to share. Loca offers a relaxed Mexican dining experience in a casual yet vibrant atmosphere. Loca’s authentic cuisine is a refreshing change from the norm and something everyone should experience. For those that are feeling less adventurous the menu does feature dishes like the ribs we tried, so you don’t have to venture to far from your comfort zone. Afternoon The St. Regis, Abu Dhabi

14 | Dining and Nightlife Abu Dhabi

Tea

As one arrives at The St Regis Abu Dhabi one cannot help but be enchanted by its opulent beauty. Large hanging crystal chandeliers, an imperial grand staircase, profound pillars and soft golden tones greet every guest with a charm that can only be attributed to The St Regis Abu Dhabi. The St Regis has a long-standing history with the tradition of Afternoon Tea. In the 19th century, Lady Caroline Astor, mother of St Regis founder John Jacob Astor IV would invite her friends for Afternoon Tea. Referred to as “The” Mrs. Astor, the undisputed Grande Dame, she ruled New York high society and her Afternoon Tea was said to be extraordinary. The Afternoon Tea Ritual begins with selecting the tea. A tea trolley is presented before me featuring the five main teas and a selection of over fifty herbs, spices and fruits. Tea can be divided into five basic categories: black, green, oolong, white and yellow, but it’s the herbs, spices and fruit that give it its unique flavour. There is no easy choice, but fortunately Tea Sommelier Ivan is on hand to talk me through the process. We discuss the variety of teas and accompaniments that can be used to compliment the Afternoon Tea, considering my mood and if I’m looking for something uplifting or relaxing. After sometime I select a blend of rooibos, wild berries, mild citrus, elderflower, peppermint, verbena and hibiscus. Stand for three minutes and enjoy. The tea tastes spectacular, the wild berries are prominent followed by a subtle hint of peppermint, the colour is a deep rouge with amber undertones, remarkable. First to be served are the savouries, at the top of the three-tier curate stand are three open Scottish Loch Fyne Smoked Salmon sandwiches. The salmon sits atop a base of brioche bread topped with dill, shallots, horseradish, wasabi and mayonnaise. A delicate helping of salmon roe is perfectly balanced on top of the salmon, adding an additional level of sophistication. The fresh salmon is beautiful and I love the horseradish, this is my second favourite item from the savouries, we will get to my first in due time. On the second tier the Smoked Duck and Quince Jam sandwich, again the presentation is wonderful. The smoked duck pairs perfectly with the jam and takes away from an otherwise overpowering duck taste. Finally, the last tier, the sandwiches. Here you will find my favourite item from the savouries, the Egg and Truffle sandwich, I never thought it possible to be pushed to my limits of excitement by a sandwich but then I hadn’t discovered this sandwich. Imagine, eggs with a dash of truffle oil served in perfectly cut sundried tomato bread. Simple but perfectly executed, this sandwich will forever be in my thoughts. Other sandwiches include the Chicken Tikka and Cucumber and Cream sandwich, which I did have a bite from before returning to my beloved Egg and Truffle sandwich. The sweets are served on a separate three-tier curate stand. First tier, lemon curd, clotted cream and strawberry preserve, second tier piping hot homemade plain and raisin scones and the third and final tier a selection of mini pastries. Thoroughly enjoyable, the fresh scones are delicious and the highlight of the sweets. If you are looking for an afternoon well spent in plush surroundings, five-star service and an Afternoon Tea fit for royalty, we would recommend The St Regis Abu Dhabi. Any hotel that has a tea sommelier on hand to compose a bespoke tea blend according to a guests preference is a hotel that demonstrates relentless attention to detail. It is this type of attention to detail that seperates the nice from the memorable. Price AED 160 per person or AED 220 with a glass of bubbly* The St Regis Abu Dhabi, 02 694 4553 *Prices subject to 10% service charge, 6% tourism fee and 4% municipality fee.

Dining Khayal Khayal, the hotels all day dining restaurant is the destination for our breakfast and lunch. Boasting natural light and open space, Khayal offers a wide variety of international cuisine. For lunch Khayal has a selection of Asian, Arabic, Indian, Italian, and Japanese cuisine including two salad bars, a bread bar and a fresh juice bar. To start we enjoy the prawn crackers from the Asian section, along with a shrimp and mango salad and pears with blue cheese salad. We return to the Asian section to try the chicken hakka noodles, stir fried noodles, roasted Asian chicken, spring rolls and dim sum. As enjoyable as all the other cuisine is, the Asian selection is our favorite, the team perfectly execute each dish. Be sure to try the authentic Asian sauces, made in-house, they are the perfect way to compliment your dim sum or prawn crackers. Desserts range from freshly made crepes, fresh fruit, warm tarts, Arabic sweets, chocolate mousse, cakes and chocolate fountains. We select one of the crepes along with vanilla ice-cream, drizzled in chocolate sauce and an Americano, a brilliant lunch.

The Grill Our evening consists of a visit to The Grill, the hotels exclusive steakhouse. This steakhouse has a modern design with chic dÊcor and a luxury element that is embodied into the restaurant. We are welcomed by the team and escorted to our seating area. We decide to dine indoors this evening, the kitchen is an open style with a glass exterior and we can’t resist watching our dishes being created by the talented culinary team at The Grill. To begin we are presented with a piping hot bread roll, from that point on we knew it was going to be a great dining experience. For our appetizers, I opt for the Black Angus Steak Tartar and my dining partner rather likes the sound of the Foie Gras Terrine with Fig Chutney. The Foie Gras Terrine with Fig Chutney is divine and full of flavor. The thick butteriness of the Foie Gras is flattered but the sweet fig, what a combination, amazing. A delicious and decadent meal fit for a king. The Black Angus Steak Tartar is full bodied, toothsome chunks of succulent meat. Our waitress informs us that chef uses a secret ingredient to give the tartar its unique taste. We tasted a gentle undertone of jalapenos, but try it for yourself and let us know what you think it is. Overall both appetizers ignited our taste buds and the excitement of what was to arrive for our main course was evident. For the main course, I select the Rib Eye Grade 7+ 330g steak from the Australian Victoria Farm Kobe style Wagyu beef options, with steak fries and Cajun spices. This dish exceeds expectations. Saporous, delectable and delightful. The high-quality Rib Eye is mouthwatering and tasteful. My dining partner opts for the 250g Tenderloin from the Prime Fox River Certified American USDA Beef options, with the homemade bbq sauce and house made onion rings. The beef tenderloin is juicy and appetizing. The house made onion rings are a nice side along with the homemade bbq sauce. For beverages, we opt for the Mocktails, Wild Berry, which consists of cranberry juice, lime juice, apple juice, sugar syrup, raspberry, strawberry and blackberry and the Citrus Crush, which is made from lime juice, grapefruit juice, sugar syrup and soda water.

Spa The ultimate indulgence is to pamper oneself at the spectacular Saray Spa. Relax in a fragrant embrace of exotic essential oils to soothe your mind and body. Feel renewed by centuries-old therapies from Turkish Hammam rituals to exotic Asian treatments. The Saray Spa offers guests a wide variety of treatments at very competitive rates. We opt for the 60 minutes Aromatherapy Massage treatment. The massage therapists are very professional, knowledgeable and asked us how we would like our treatment, any areas to avoid and if the temperature in the room is sufficient to kneading away our aches and pains. The massage treatment is exceptional. The ambience of the massage room is on point and the therapists perform very professionally. I would return to receive the 5-star treatment at an affordable price at Saray Spa. Thinking about this again, I think I will book a treatment in for next month.

The Verdict From the dining to the spa the hotel embraces its influence and translates this throughout the guest’s experience. It’s the small touches that make for a unique and memorable stay. If you are looking to escape the modern-day hustle of the city, we recommend a visit to Marriott Hotel Al Forsan for an unforgettable and relaxing visit. Be sure to visit The Grill steakhouse for scrumptious meat cuts and unwind and relax at Saray Spa for a truly extraordinary Spa experience. Marriott Hotel Al Forsan, Abu Dhabi, 02 201 4000

Smoking Doll

22 | Dining and Nightlife Abu Dhabi

Today we are dining at Smoking Doll, Nation Galleria outlet. Smoking Doll, offers guests the opportunity to indulge in fine Thai and Japanese cuisine, as it effortlessly brings the Far East to the Middle East. The Thai dishes offer the perfect harmony of sweet, sour, salty and spicy flavors guaranteed to seduce your taste buds with a variety of textures and fragrances. Whilst the Japanese dishes are sure to excite you with their flavor and creativity. With elegant yet modern interiors inspired by origami and ancient hand fans, Smoking Doll offers a cool, inspiring, yet minimalistic casual atmosphere. Being located in a mall doesn’t take away from the quality of the scrumptious dishes, it just means you can totally rock up in shorts and a t-shirt. Smoking Doll has a mixologist onsite who creates a variety of mocktails. We opt for the Asian Sunset, made with mulled strawberries, fresh mint and lime topped with sparkling grape, very refreshing and perfect for a warm day. For starters, we order the Satay Nuea, sate marinated beef strip with peanut sauce and the Gyoza Nuea, beef hoisin and ginger dumplings. The Satay Nuea are delicious, we dip the thick chunks of beef generously into the peanut sauce, take a bite and allow it to flake off into our mouth. The classic chicken satay is available but we would recommend the beef every time. The Gyoza Nuea are also very impressive, but just a hard act to follow after the Satay Nuea. We move onto our mains, Spider Rolls and California Rolls, classic Maki rolls served in eight pieces. The California Rolls are made with crab, avocado, roasted sesame and tobiko. Very enjoyable, a likeable dish, this is usually the dish I’d recommend for those trying sushi for the first time. Offering an alternative from the regular California Rolls the Spider Rolls are made with crispy fired soft shell crab, avocado, cucumber, mayonnaise and tobiko. These are much more elaborate and we absolutely love the crispy fired soft shell crab. For sides, we keep it healthy and tuck into the Pad Pak Ruam, stir fried Chinese broccoli and morning glory with garlic and sesame. Don’t be fooled into thinking this dish is bland, chef has brilliantly balanced the garlic and sesame to give it a luscious flavor. Slightly stuffed at this point were ready to call it a day until our waitress convinces us to try the Khao Niew MaMuang, mango sticky rice with coconut cream, and you know how much we love coconut, so naturally we agree. The rice is served piping hot, with warm coconut cream and fresh mango on the side. Light and flavorful the Khao Niew MaMuang gets a big thumbs up. The St. Regis Saadiyat, Friday Brunch

24 | Dining and Nightlife Abu Dhabi

Island Resort One of the most popular brunches in the city, Olea transforms into a gastronomical wonderland every Friday. Beverages flowing, live music playing and a feast spanning across 2,000 square feet of five-star real estate has guests traveling from all corners of Abu Dhabi and beyond. Displayed in Olea is a selection of fresh seafood, cold cuts, Asian, International, and Arabic cuisine alongside sushi and poultry stations. Across the hall, in 55&5th guests can enjoy a selection of oysters, foie gras and grills. Hidden away above 55&5th is the converted cheese room. Many brunches mention a cheese room but The St Regis Saadiyat is the only hotel deserving of the name, boasting over fifty varieties of international cheeses. For starters, we opt for the pan-fried foie gras, pistachio foam, breadcrumbs and chocolate terrine. The combination of foie gras with light pistachio foam verses the breadcrumbs and velvety chocolate terrine is delightful. The ingredients work in perfect harmony to create an imaginative and tasty dish. We also sample a selection of Kelly, Fine de Claire and Morecambe oysters with a small helping of red and black lumpfish caviar. The oysters are superb, our favorite is the Kelly oysters, with a splash of pomegranate mignonette. The brunch is bustling with Friday brunchers, dressed in their best attire the atmosphere is vibrant and energetic. The band is playing a variety of music at just the right level, ensuring we can enjoy the music and hold a conversation, a refreshing change from other brunches. Next, we visit the carving station, located in 55&5th. One downside of leaving the UK is that you always miss a good Sunday lunch, well fear no more my fellow expats, for the carving station at The St Regis Saadiyat has a spread that will even rival your dear nans Sunday lunch. We pick up our plates and select the grilled vegetables, braised veal leg, Irish lamb saddle stuffed with foie gras and chicken mousse and a brazenly large Yorkshire pudding. The highlight is the Irish lamb saddle stuffed with foie gras and chicken mousse, the flavors are remarkable. Be sure to add just a dash of pumpkin and English mustard puree, it will probably be the best decision you’ll make at a Friday brunch. In the same room, you will find a selection of BBQ grills from grilled striploin, to josper grilled chicken drumsticks marinated in Asian sauce, be sure not to overlook the drumsticks, the marination is outstanding. The dessert station is by far one of the most elaborate in the city. A colorful aquatic center piece stands tall, surrounded by miniature sweet treats. More of a sweet person myself I select a miniature chocolate cupcake, lemon meringue, red velvet cupcake, raspberry panna cotta and fresh strawberries dipped in the chocolate fountain. My favorite dessert is the red velvet cupcake, rich and moist, I go back for a second helping. My colleague is more of a savory person so he ventures to the cheese room. He returns with a selection of cheeses, crackers, jams and honey. The Shropshire Blue, is sharp and tangy as is the Stilton but the fresh honey straight from the honey comb softens the taste. What is unique is the vegetarian cheese, the Ribblesdale, its great to see this on offer. The St Regis Saadiyat Friday Brunch is an impressive brunch and we can see why it’s won so many awards. Not only does it have a vast range of global cuisine, the culinary team have also managed to reimagine old dishes to create a fusion of tastes. I was really impressed with the Mango Labneh and the Minted Roquefort with Baby Pears, simple, creative but excellently executed and visually stunning. Be sure to take your time and explore the offerings and if you feel slightly overwhelmed request a brunch map this will effortlessly ensure you don’t miss any of the delectable cuisine on offer. Prices start from AED 300* inclusive of food and soft drinks, AED 395* inclusive of house beverages, AED 590* inclusive bubbly and AED 150* per child from 6 -12 years old and kids under 5 years eats for free. Oléa, St. Regis Saadiyat Island Resort, 02 498 8443 *Prices are subject to 10% Service Charge, 6% Tourism Fee and 4% Municipality Fee.

Azza Explores Noodle Box, Yas Viceroy, Abu Dhabi

28 | Dining and Nightlife Abu Dhabi

Yas Island Abu Dhabi’s premier hotel, Yas Viceroy Abu Dhabi sets the standard for exceptional service. When dining at this exhilarating hotel you expect the food to be nothing short of spectacular. The hotels tantalizing restaurants showcase the finest specialties from around the world, ensuring something for everyone. For today’s visit, I will be dining at Noodle Box. Noodle Box offers contemporary South East Asian cuisine in casual yet vibrant surroundings. Specialties include Laksa, Nasi Goreng, Thai Curries, Dim Sum and other Chinese classics, infused with the irresistible tastes and aromas of the East. Yas Viceroy is one of my favourite hotels, I love everything about it, the décor, the creative fresh flower set-up in the lobby, the neutral tones and the enchanting aroma. Yas Viceroy encompasses chic elegance and of course it’s the only hotel to be built over an F1 track. Now, onto my culinary journey. As I enter the restaurant the first thing that catches my eye is the open kitchen. Personally, I love being able to watch the chefs as they cook and work their way around the kitchen, it adds a theatrical touch. What you will also notice about Noodle Box is the warm and welcoming atmosphere. The décor contributes to this, deep earth colours make it feel cosy and relaxing. To start, prawn crackers with peanut butter and soya sauce … very moreish, I finished them slightly faster than I wish to admit. For appetizers, the new Vietnamese Rice Paper Rolls, it looks like sushi rolls but with rice paper rolled around chicken, rice noodles and aromatic herbs. It’s a taste bud explosion, a multitude of flavours burst into my mouth, this is the real definition of how an appetizer should be, it’s the perfect way to start. For the main course, I enjoy the Kung Boa Chicken Noodles, wok fried egg noodles with chicken, cabbage, bean sprouts and my favourite black bean sauce, yummy. The foundation of the dish is a typical fried egg noodles dish but what makes it special is the chicken. The chicken is tender and adds an additional element of texture to the dish. Although I’m already full from the appetizer I cannot stop eating, the chicken is amazing and the black bean sauce is just the most perfect taste you can imagine. I would recommend this dish for the chicken lovers out there, you wouldn’t be disappointed! The first two dishes are amazing so I cannot resist the dessert menu, it looks very appealing. I decide to try the Chilled Mango Pudding, which consists of coconut sago and mango sorbet. If you’re a fan of mango this is the dessert for you. The culinary team have been very creative in placing a variety of flavours perfectly in one bowl, you can either eat them separately or mix them together for a full flavour impact. It is a refreshing dish to complete my culinary journey at Noddle Box, Yas Viceroy. To conclude my journey, I decide to order a cup of jasmine tea, a perfect end to a wonderful dining experience. Noodle Box is perfect for families, couples or a group of friends. My favourite part is the outdoor area, you can see the whole race track, which is amazing! One thing I loved about Noodle Box, other than the food, was the service, from the manager, waitress to the chef, it was all on point. Our waitress Luna was amazing, her way of interacting with the table and recommending dishes ensured we had the perfect evening. If you’ve dined at Noodle Box before, FYI they’ve just changed the menu so it’s definitely worth another visit, and soon! Noodle Box, Yas Viceroy, Abu Dhabi, 02 656 0600 Words by Azza Al Mughairy
