It’s always a pleasure dining at 55&5th, from the service to the food, everything is on point. This restaurant oozes chic, its high ceilings and cool blue back lit walls set the tone for an unforgettable evening. With only a hand full of tables you can easily enjoy a relaxing dinner as the staff cater to your every need, making you feel like a VIP. Today we are sampling a few dishes from the new menu. Chef Manuel has taken over the kitchen at 55&5th and has reinvented its menu. Having studied at the Culinary School of Toledo, Chef Manuel has worked in a host of Michelin Star restaurants under a myriad of celebrity chefs, including Chef Pepe Rodriguez and Sergi Arola. To start we enjoy a palate cleanser made of cucumber, marinated cherry tomato and thyme ice-cream. We eagerly await our first course. The marinated foie gras millefeuille with pear panna cotta, Spanish grape, grape poached pear and brioche, has to be one of the best foie gras we have ever tasted, rich, creamy and velvety the aroma invigorates our senses. Up next my favourite dish the josper grilled octopus, perfectly grilled and served with green pea, chickpea and marinated cherry tomatoes, this dish is an adventure of the senses. To find grilled octopus is difficult, to find it grilled to perfection is near enough impossible. The lightly smoked turbot comes with grilled artichokes, roasted sunchokes, caviar and lemon sauce. Turbot has a very mild taste with a medium to firm texture so the flavours of the artichokes and lemon sauce give it a much needed zest. The presentation is sublime, Chef Manuel has placed the vegetables on the turbot to represent small scales on a fish, a quirky but nice touch. The Spanish young lamb is a 12 hour braised lamb shoulder with sundried tomato polenta, salt roasted beets, Espelette cherry and parsnip. This is my second favourite dish from the tasting menu. The lamb literally melts in your mouth, this dish is phenomenal. It refreshing to see basic ingredients cleverly used to add so much flavour to one dish. We enjoy blueberry sorbet, lemon and orange granite, yogurt, cherry caviar. Another palate cleaner before moving onto the dessert. The dessert consists of mango and coconut textures, cremeux, frozen, crunchy, liquid, dehydrated, poached and crispy. Chef Manuel has left us impressed and wanting to return sooner than planned. You can definitely see the influence of his Spanish roots however he has skilfully incorporated this into the menu without losing 55&5th’s core values. His new menu is nothing short of a culinary masterpiece and we will soon be back to explore more. 55&5th The Grill The St. Regis Saadiyat Island Resort 02 498 8888

Café 302 Café 302 is the newest café concept from the Rotana brand. Located within Al Maha Arjaan by Rotana, Café 302 offers a selection of wholesome dishes and sweet treats. The décor is trendy yet comfortable and features earthly tones. The cosy space is ideal to sit down, catch up with friends or hold short meetings. Cuisine includes hand-crafted masterpieces of steak and seafood, healthy salads, selections of freshly baked breads and buns with tantalising fillings, savoury pies and quiches. This delicious selection can all be washed down with Café 302’s freshly made coffees or a range of healthy beverages. One of Café 302’s must-have drinks is its signature Kyoto Coffee, which originates from Japan. The coffee takes 10 – 12 hours to brew and is best enjoyed when served over ice. Brewing towers are placed within the café for fresh blends, giving guests the chance to indulge and enjoy. My absolute favourite dish has to be the spinach and kale salad with dates, cashew, feta cheese and pomegranate dressing. Now it’s not every day I get excited about a salad…. actually I don’t think I ever have but I would drive across town for this one. I love the way the team have blended healthy and trendy ingredients such as spinach and kale but added a nice local influence with the use of dates. Another star dish is The Café Burger, Angus beef topped with melted cheese on a toasted bun served with fries. This is comfort food at its best. The burger is so big we have to cut it into four pieces. The potted banana creamed pie, macadamia nut crust and soft caramel dessert is delicious. Fresh cuts of banana are placed within thick layers of soft cream then drizzled in an abundance of caramel. This is one dessert guaranteed to make you go “mmm”. Solemnly do we find a café that is as consistent with its food as it is its desserts but Café 302 is. All the portions at Café 302 are very generous ensuring you and your wallet can both leave feeling full. If we had had any room left we would have tried the Nutella and hazelnut crunch milkshake, but until next time. Those on-the-go have a wide selection of take-away dishes. Café 302 also provides a range of retail products, such as its premium pressed virgin olive oils and organic food items as well as fresh baked breads. Café 302 Al Maha Arjaan by Rotana 02 610 6666

Priced at AED 165* The Taste of Hakkasan menu is available daily from 6.00pm to 7.30pm. With a price tag so reasonable we are a bit sceptical of the portion size however Hakkasan does not disappoint. For starters we select the crispy duck rolls and the chef’s selection of dim sum. Also featured on the menu is Hakkasan’s much talked about crispy duck salad this is available for an additional AED 30. The dim sum is great but we really enjoy the crispy duck rolls. I’d go as far as to say this is one of our favourite dishes in Abu Dhabi. Perfectly pulled duck is packed into large tasteful crispy rolls, making each bite as flavourful as the next. Up next the soup, we select the sweetcorn soup with crab meat and the Chinese wild mushroom soup. The sweetcorn soup has a generous helping of crab meat, a big thumbs up. The Chinese wild mushroom soup is authentic Chinese soup at its best. Created using a variety of mushrooms, it’s refreshing to see a dish that has kept it authenticity. The main course, we are surprised to see such a wide selection of great dishes. The menu includes everything from crispy wagyu, tofu, sweet and sour chicken, red snapper, stir-fried roasted duck to wok-fried wild prawns. We opt for the steamed red snapper with yellow bean and fresh chilli sauce and the crispy wagyu beef with mooli in osmanthus sauce. We order and wait sceptically, expecting a tiny portion to arrive. We are pleasantly surprised, the portions are more than enough and come with a side dish of rice. The crispy wagyu is delightful but the red snapper is phenomenal. Now the red snapper does have a slight kick due to the fresh chilli sauce but there is no denying this dish is a must try. The crispy wagyu is an additional AED 50 but the red snapper is better value for money. For dessert we keep it simple and go with the homemade sorbet which has been made in the restaurant. Overall for AED 165* the Taste of Hakkasan menu offers great value for money and what’s even better is that they haven’t skimped on quantity or quality of the dishes. Carluccio’s Yas Mall For those of you who have not dined at Carluccio’s, Carluccio’s is a casual dining restaurant, café and food shop. Open throughout the day for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Carluccio’s café offers a selection of takeaway coffees, cakes and sandwiches whilst the food shop sells a selection of traditional Italian goods. Admittedly, I’m a regular at Carluccio’s the simple Italian food and good value for money makes it one of my regular to go places when I’m not in the mood to cook. For a casual dining outlet these guys do a great seafood linguine. As we enter Carluccio’s in Yas Mall we are warmly greeted by the team. The restaurant is packed with families enjoying a yummy Italian meal. We find a seat in one of the booths and start to browse the menu. Today we are here to review the new menu, The Grill. As the name would suggest this menu features a selection of grills ranging from chicken, steak, sea bass, lamb and prawns. The grills each come with a selection of two sides. The sides are split into two categories one is called ‘from the kitchen’ the other ‘from the deli’. ‘From the kitchen’ offers hot selections such as mushrooms, potatoes and vegetable fries. ‘From the deli’ offers cooler items such as salads and cous cous. We select the pollo alla griglia, marinated flame grilled spring chicken, blasted with lemon and garlic and the 500g T-bone fiorentina steak to share. We decide to share the sides and order mash potatoes, vegetable fries, spicy broccoli and rosemary potatoes. Our meals are out in under 20 minutes, impressive. Both presented on a large wooden board our meals look like a feast and we can’t wait to tuck in. On the bone, the chicken is full of flavour, if you like garlic you will love this dish, the rosemary potatoes are scrumptious and the spicy broccoli has just enough spice. The T-bone steak fills up much of the board, now we understand why this is for sharing. Grilled to perfection the T-bone steak is complimented well by the mash potatoes and the vegetable fries. The vegetable fries are a refreshing twist from normal French fries and we convince ourselves they have to be healthier….right? As good as the T-bone steak is the chicken wins our vote. Overall the chicken has more flavour plus for AED 62 this is amazing value for money. For the dessert we go off The Grill menu. One of my favourite desserts is Carluccio’s passion fruit meringue, cuts of strawberry meringue layered with passion fruit mascarpone and raspberry coulis. Light and refreshing, it’s a great dessert to satisfy your sweet cravings. Overall The Grill menu gets a good review from the team. A good meal at a decent price, perfect for those days you just can’t be bothered to cook! Carluccio’s Yas Mall 02 565 1004

Banyan Tree Al Wadi
30 | Dining and Nightlife Abu Dhabi
Located amongst the golden sands of the Ras Al Khaimah desert you will discover the tranquil resort of Banyan Tree Al Wadi. The resort features a host of delectable dining options. Today we are here to review two of their signature dining experiences. Arabian Style BBQ Firstly the Arabian Style BBQ. Close your eyes an imagine this, a sprawling desert with cascading dunes, lit by the glowing moonlight, the smell of the burning coals on the BBQ and the gentle whistle of the breeze. This is exactly what you can expect when you dine at the Arabian Style BBQ. Tonight we are the only ones dining, possibly as it’s still quite warm and no one is feeling quite as adventurous as us. Our table is perched on top of a sand dune. Small glistening tea lights light the path to our private dining experience. As we unwind and take in the views, chef starts to serve our cold mezze selection. The cold mezzes consist of muhammara, hummus, moutabel, fattoush, tabbouleh and warm bread. The cold mezzes are a great way to start our Arabic Style BBQ experience. I always feel that the fattoush is a good indication of the standard of the Arabic cuisine yet to come. Although it seems a simple dish I cannot tell you the amount of times I’ve been left feeling disappointed. However I can confidently say the fattoush and all the mezzes are great this evening. Up next, the seafood BBQ. Thick jumbo prawns, Omani lobster tail and grilled fish are all presented fresh from the BBQ, you can taste the charcoal essence. The Omani lobster tail is exceptional, drizzled with a dash of garlic butter, we eat every last bite. Following on from the seafood is the meat selection, chicken, beef and lamb kofta are again grilled to perfection and served from BBQ to plate. The portions are generous and we are quickly starting to feel full. However we ensure that we keep some space for the dessert. For dessert we are served a selection of fresh cut fruits, basbousa and qatayef. Chef is extremely knowledgeable and explains each course and all the ingredients to us throughout the meal, plus he gets extra credit for being able to cook so well with so little light. Safran Safran is Banyan Tree Al Wadi’s Thai restaurant. Safran features high ceilings and dark marble floors, offering a chic yet comfortable design. Outside the restaurant is a softly lit Arabian watering hole where wild nomadic desert animals gather in the cool of the evening quiet. For starters we select Safran’s signature appetizer, a sampler of fried crispy sea bass spring roll, chicken satay, pomelo salad and crispy prawn wrapped in rice noodle. The appetizer is large enough to be easily shared by two or more people. The fried crispy sea bass spring roll is delectable, we enjoy the contrast of the crispy sea bass and the soft spring roll. Also worth mentioning is the chicken satay, this is always a great dish. Next the soup, I tuck into the tom yum goong a traditional spicy prawn soup, lemongrass, galangal with mushroom whilst my colleague enjoys the tom seab soup, braised beef short rib, shallot and Thai parsley. The tom yum soup is rich with a slight creamy texture, not normally seen in tom yum soup but we like this twist, it tastes amazing. The tom seab soup is enjoyable but the tom yum soup surpasses our expectations. For the main course we order the wok tossed lobster, potato, saffron curry and the wok tossed tiger prawns in tom yum flavours with mushroom and lemongrass, served with 3 types of rice. The wok tosses prawns consist of large juicy prawns smothered in fiery tom yum flavours. The wok tossed lobster is hands down the best dish of our whole dining experience at Banyan Tree Al Wadi. The spicy yet sweet saffron curry is layered thickly atop of the lobster. This dish is so good we clean the plate in a matter of minutes. To end our wonderful dining experience at Safran, we enjoy the coconut crème brûlée with ginger syrup and mango sticky rice with coconut ice-cream. The crème brûlée is the better of the two, light yet with an intense aroma, this dessert offers a taste bud sensation. Banyan Tree Spa We decide that after all the fabulous food we are in desperate need of a massage. Banyan Tree Al Wadi has a highly recognised spa. The spa has won a magnitude of accolades over the years. As we enter the spa we are warmly welcomed by the team and offered a cool face cloth and a fresh beverage. I select the Balinese massage and my colleague selects the Swedish massage. Both massages are performed to perfection and we leave Banyan Tree Al Wadi having had a great dining experience and a relaxing massage.
