The St.Regis Saadiyat Island Resort Friday Brunch

6 | Dining and Nightlife Abu Dhabi

Every Friday The St. Regis Saadiyat Island Resort transforms into a gastronomical wonderland where brunch aficionados descend in their hundreds. Set in Oléa and extending to 55&5th the brunch includes a selection of live cooking stations, an impressive cheese room, outdoor grill, sweet section and much, much more. The St. Regis Saadiyat Island Resort shook up Abu Dhabi’s brunch scene last year when it pretty much won every brunch award going. This year Executive Chef Malcolm Webster and his team of culinary experts are making it better than ever. As we arrive we are warmly greeted by the team and escorted to our table. The band is in full swing and the atmosphere is electric. Our waiter is wonderful and quickly gets us into the vibe. We browse through the brunch offerings with a sense of excitement and curiosity, as we are eager to see what the team has in store for us today. For starters we opt for the seared foie gras. Served on toasted bread with poached apples, it tastes sensational. The sweetness of the poached apples beautifully compliments the buttery texture of the foie gras. A must try. Up next, oysters. With a dedicated oyster station we are spoilt for choice. We finally opt for the Kelly and Cumbria oysters served with pomegranate mignonette. Delightful. The Cumbria oysters are exceptional, thick and meaty we are quick to go up for a few more of these tasty ocean treats. If you like oysters you will love what The St. Regis Saadiyat Island Resort has to offer, by far the most extensive range of quality oysters we’ve seen at a brunch. Continuing on our seafood theme, we head towards the seafood market. Nautically decorated, layers of fresh mouthwatering seafood range from clams, mussels to crab. Be sure to try the sushi on offer, located between Oléa and 55&5th. The St. Regis Saadiyat Island Resort brunch now features its own sushi counter where sushi is prepared fresh in front of your eyes. And yes it’s good, really good. Wanting to try something different my colleague opts for the butter chicken with a side of dhal makhani and naan bread. Unable to resist the aroma of the creamy butter chicken, I help myself to a small serving and I must say I’m glad I did. Butter chicken is a favorite amongst Abu Dhabi foodies and I strongly recommend you try this one, it’s up there with the best. Credit has to be given to Executive Chef Malcolm Webster and his team. To do so many cuisines and do them well is a challenge but to execute a brunch of this size with so much attention to detail is unheard of. Moving onto the cheese room. Offering over fifty unique varieties of international cheeses, this is a cheese connoisseurs dream. A selection of crackers, breadsticks, breads and honey are available to accompany your chosen cheese. Finally, dessert. The aquatic themed dessert station looks amazing. A large colorful coral reef sits in the center, surrounded by tasty treats, we pick up a plate and begin to browse. Lavender blueberry cupcakes, banoffee bar and lemon meringue tart make their way onto our plate. The ‘fish for your dessert’ station is still here, but were happy to say our skills have improved and we hook a tasty treat in a matter of moments. ‘Fish for your dessert’ literally allows you to hook your dessert, as pods of sweets float around the small pool. If you’re looking for a great tasting brunch with a wide variety of stations to satisfy even the fussiest of eaters pay a visit to The St. Regis Saadiyat Island Resort Friday brunch, you will not be disappointed. Every Friday 1.00pm to 4.00pm Prices start from AED 300* with soft beverages *prices subject to 10% service charge, 6% tourism fee and 4% municipality fee.

Highly anticipated these renowned brands will be making their debut in the capital from autumn 2016 until late 2017. Image: Le Petite Maison

Image: Coya

La Petite Maison Offering French Mediterranean dishes and consistently warm service. La Petite Maison Dubai has won a selection of awards including Best French Restaurant, as well as Restaurant of the Year. This little Provençal-inspired bistro is set to be a culinary hotspot in Abu Dhabi. Roberto’s Building on the success of Roberto’s Dubai, Roberto’s Abu Dhabi is expected to be bigger and better offering an in-door and outdoor seating area, in-house bakery and extended operating hours. Roberto’s Abu Dhabi will present a truly cosmopolitan experience for Abu Dhabi’s discerning culinary crowd. While offering the signature Roberto’s experience of passionate service and gourmet food, the new venue will offer its own distinct twist on the menu. COYA Opening in the beginning of 2017, COYA Abu Dhabi is a multi-award winning brand and is a sister property of Zuma and La Petite Maison. Image: Loca

Image: Eat Greek Kouzina

Nusr-Et Nusr-Et Steakhouse serves delicious meat in a homelike atmosphere. It quickly became the leading restaurant representing steakhouse culture in Turkey. Nusr-Et Steakhouse’s mission was simple: great food, great atmosphere and a great experience. By combining a delectable menu, great atmosphere and impeccable service, Nusr-Et Steakhouse brings a modern twist to the beloved traditions and expectations of an ultra-premium steakhouse. More than a regular steakhouse, Nusr-Et Steakhouse has become a prestigious location in a short time, both for local and international guests. Loca Loca is a new concept in Mexican dining, opened in Dubai in October 2009 and has had the critics raving ever since. Serving Mexican food outside of Mexico has always been synonymous with ‘Tex-Mex’ fast food style eateries. Loca has broken that mold. It’s chef hails from Mexico City, and the menu boasts some authentic dishes from all over that part of Latin America. Eat Greek Kouzina Eat Greek Kouzina honours the breadth of traditional Greek cuisine by bringing fresh, wholesome cooking from all regions of Greece to a contemporary, comfortable and family friendly setting in Abu Dhabi. Surrounded by an authentic cozy Mediterranean atmosphere, with imported limestone, distressed wood floors and exposed wood beams all adding to the ambience, Eat Greek Kouzina’s open kitchens prepare the freshest selection of Mediterranean specialties and authentic Greek food. Sa-Mar Little is known about Sa-Mar but word on the street has it that it will be an upscale Spanish restaurant and we can barely contain our excitement! The Dining Collection represents a stable of successful chef and restaurateur led concepts with existing impressive regional credentials and a trophy cupboard of awards between them. The restaurants will perfectly complement the existing group of dining experiences, which includes Zuma, Bentley Bistro and Bar, Nolu’s, Almaz By Momo, and Emporio Armani Caffe as well as the signature restaurants in the Rosewood Abu Dhabi, Sambusek and Dai Pai Dong and the Four Seasons Hotel Abu Dhabi with the much anticipated Butcher and Still and Cafe Milano, the popular U.S upscale Italian restaurant straight from Georgetown, Washington DC.

Tori No Su

10 | Dining and Nightlife Abu Dhabi

Adjacent to Jumeirah at Etihad Towers you will find Tori No Su, Jumeriah’s fine dining Japanese restaurant. This sleek, modern and award winning Japanese restaurant offers contemporary dishes, carefully crafted by kaiseki-trained chef Ando. With its sushi bar, teppanyaki counter and passionate chefs, Tori No Su provides a lively setting in which to enjoy chef Ando’s superb kaiseki-style menu. You will enjoy fresh fish from the sushi bar, ‘iron plate’ dishes from the Teppanyaki counter, or something slow-grilled from the Robatayaki counter. Alternatively, in traditional Japanese style, you could order an “omakase” course, whereby Chef Ando and his team will create a surprising selection of dishes on demand. As we enter Tori No Su we are greeted by the restaurant manager and escorted to our table. Tori No Su boasts stylish décor, yellow marble is backlit, adding a sense of tranquility, large lamps hang from the ceiling exuding luxury and sophistication, exactly what you would expect from Jumeirah. We are guided through the menu by the team. The menu features an extensive range of Japanese delicacies. Finally after much contemplation we are ready to order. For our hot appetizer we select the hotate ebi gyoza, prawn and scallop dim sum. This dish is beautifully presented. Each bite offers a sensational mouthful of thick succulent prawn and scallop. For the main course we order off Tori No Su specials menu. We select the gindara miso yaki, black cod marinated with miso. This black cod is the talk of the town, so we are very eager to see if it lives up to the hype. We taste and pause with excitement…..this dish is divine. The black cod literally melts at the sight of our fork, beautifully marinated this dish offers a ‘mmm’ moment with every bite. To compliment the main course we order the Wagyu beef udon noodles. This dish consists of wheat noodles, shiitake, leeks, shimeji and banno negi. Thick cuts of Wagyu beef are perfectly tossed to create a tasteful dish that perfectly complements the black cod. As the foodies amongst you will know, Tori No Su was one of the participating restaurants in Dining and Nightlife Abu Dhabi’s very first Restaurant Month. The special restaurant month menu the team at Tori No Su created was brilliant. Here’s our review of their special restaurant month menu. For starters, the three kind of appetizer which consisted of spicy beef salad, grilled salmon with miso mayo and lobster croquettes. All served in a traditional bento box. The spicy beef salad was perfectly balanced allowing us to enjoy the slight spiciness without it overpowering the rest of this dish. The lobster croquettes were amazing, this was the first time we had tried them but be warned they are seriously moreish. For the main course the grilled seafoods which included salmon miso-zuke, prawn teriyaki, kingfish miso mayo with vegetable sesame sauce. The salmon miso-zuke stood out with its thick texture and rich flavor. To conclude our culinary journey at Tori No Su our favorite dessert, mochi ice cream, served with tropical fruits and raspberry sauce. The food, service and atmosphere at Tori No Su is exceptional. We would highly rate this as one of the best Japanese restaurants in Abu Dhabi. Tori No Su, Jumeirah at Etihad Towers, 02 811 5666

Buon Appetito!

12 | Dining and Nightlife Abu Dhabi

Italian food at its best in Abu Dhabi! As diners beg to delve deeper into Italy’s ancient history of cuisine a recent surge of outlets have popped up to offer different tastes of Italy. Whether you like tucking into a fine burrata flown in from Italy or a slice of rustic pizza, Italian food is a hit in the capital. With so many options, here are our top picks. Fine Dining Amici Located in Yas Viceroy you will find a hidden gem called Amici, Yas Viceroy’s Italian restaurant. Offering a stylish yet unpretentious ambience, Amici is the perfect place to dine with family and friends. Italian cuisine is served Cicchetti style. Cicchetti focuses on Venetian-inspired cuisine served tapas style, perfect for sharing. In the cooler months be sure to sit outside and take in the glistening lights of Yas Viceroy. Don’t leave Amici without trying the Sicilian cannoli filled with sweet ricotta cheese, raspberry compote and crushed pistachio, it’s simply amazing! Yas Viceroy, 02 656 0600 Circo Abu Dhabi has been given a taste of the New York celebrity chef scene when Circo opened its fabulous circus-themed doors. The family behind New York’s legendary restaurant, Le Cirque, wanted an offering reminiscent of its flagship venue known as the glitzy place to see and be seen in the city for decades. The circus theme feels quirky and cool, while the outdoor patio’s ambiance transports you to simpler times when enjoying a ‘spuntino fritto’ (fried snack) and a cool beverage by the beach was all the glamour you could ever need. Have your meal your way at Circo and feel like a star. InterContinental Abu Dhabi, 800 423 463 Todd English’s Olives Having impressed diners from New York to Abu Dhabi Chef English’s unique interpretation of Mediterranean cuisine along with his famous showmanship has put his restaurants on the map across the globe. Set in the tranquil Venetian Village Todd English’s Olives is a must try for food fanatics. The restaurant features a maze like interior, with several areas, each with a distinct vibe, from sophisticated and luxe to casual. The moods and experiences offered at Todd English’s Olives are remarkably eclectic. For intimate gatherings, the restaurant offers two private rooms. Todd English’s Olives, Venetian Village, 02 404 1941 BiCE Ristorante The award winning BiCE is located in the stunning Jumeirah at Etihad Towers. BiCE’s menu is inspired by the region of Tuscany. In the warmer months sit inside and enjoy BiCE’s stylish décor but in the cooler months head straight outside and take in the sprawling views of the Arabian Gulf. On Saturday evenings, plan to be wooed as you feast to the backdrop of a live pianist. This month and next, diners can enjoy a special a la carte menu inspired by the traditional cuisine of Piemonte. Jumeirah at Etihad Towers, 02 811 5666

Villa Toscana Take a culinary journey to Tuscany at Villa Toscana. The menu bridges tradition and elegance, serving handcrafted, regional Italian specialties from Tuscany, Umbria, and Emilia-Romagna. An excellent and reasonably priced sampler of Villa Toscana’s menu may be had during their popular Espresso Business Lunch, which runs every workday from 12noon to 3.00pm and includes antipasti buffet and, of course, an espresso for just AED 78. The restaurant has also just introduced a Saturday Tuscan-themed brunch from 12:30pm to 4.00pm where diners may sample authentic Italian cuisine, presented at the table, as well as from live stations and an antipasti buffet, all to the sounds of a live band. The St. Regis Abu Dhabi, Corniche, 02 694 4553 Frankie’s Italian Restaurant and Bar Frankie’s feels a bit like a low lit, family owned Italian restaurant in New York City and it’s one of the few restaurants in town that really has atmosphere. Frankie’s Italian Restaurant and Bar is a collaboration between famed horse jockey Frankie Dettori and Michelin star Chef Marco Pierre White, guests can enjoy authentic Italian cuisine in a bustling indoor venue or at the outdoor courtyard. The food is standard Italian fare, while the pastas and seafood dishes are memorable. The staff are friendly and attentive without being intrusive, making it a stellar option. Fairmont Bab Al Bahr, 02 654 3238 Mezzaluna Located in Emirates Palace, Mezzaluna offers stunning views of the hotel’s greenery allowing you to feel like you have been transported to an Italian villa. The menu offers a selection of delectable starters to choose from, such as scallops and grilled octopus and the portion sizes are quite good. The venue, known for its excellent service, allows no diner to wait too long in between courses and the mains are brought to the table as if on cue. Mezzaluna’s baked lamb loin is the stuff of dreams. Cap off your meal with something decadent when you visit their dessert menu. The creamy tiramisu with Nutella ice cream would be our choice but all the fare is truly fit to be served at a palace. Emirates Palace, 02 690 7999 Bocca Bocca in the Hilton Abu Dhabi is the grand matron the capital’s Italian scene. Having been around for some time Bocca is still consistently rated highly by food critics, and most say it’s getting better with age. Diners love Bocca’s open kitchen where you can watch chefs hurling pizza bases in the air, which just feels oh so Italian. If you are not a pizza fan, the menu includes a good selection of lasagna, meat and fish dishes, as well as pasta. The portions are just right and the staff are fast and attentive. Hilton Abu Dhabi, 02 681 1900

14 | Dining and Nightlife Abu Dhabi

Cipriani The decor of Cipriani’s cruise liner-themed restaurant oozes glamour. Waiters are traditionally dressed in crisp white tuxedos with dickie bows and gloves, making you feel like you’ve just stepped back in time. It’s worth hitting up the glamour capital of Yas Island, at the very least, to say you did. The place feels very Italian and its crew is mostly Italian, so it’s odd to see so many Japanese dishes on the menu, but Cipriani is nothing, if not eclectic. The menu is heavily laden with meat dishes, such as veal and steak adjacent to the sashimi and sushi. Cipriani, Yas Marina, 02 657 5400 Sacci Tucked away in The Westin Abu Dhabi is a cozy Italian spot, which is a bit of a well-known secret to golf club members and Italian food lovers alike, meaning everyone loves it, but they keep it kind of quiet so there’s always a table free for them. Quite a few of their antipastis make best dish listicles around the city regularly, but we highly recommend you try their polpo, grilled octopus, potato cream, smoked bell pepper in mint olive oil, crispy red onion. It’s simply divine. The Westin Abu Dhabi Golf Resort and Spa, 02 616 9999

Family Friendly Ristorante Cavallino The story behind Ristorante Cavallino is amazing. Ristorante Cavallino was the first restaurant to open just outside the gates of the Ferrari factory in the 1940’s. It’s where the legendary Enzo dined in his day and where Ferrari executives dine today. You can experience the same passion for Italian cuisine at Ferrari World Abu Dhabi. Offering a casual yet elegant dining experience, Ristorante Cavallino’s delicious range of pizzas and pasta dishes stay true to their Italian roots. Ferrari World Abu Dhabi also offers a dining pass to guests who do not wish to enter the park but dine at the restaurant. Ferrari World Abu Dhabi, 02 496 8000 Filini Nestled away in Radisson Blu, Yas Island you will find Filini. A true Italian restaurant, perfect for family and friends to get together and enjoy good wholesome Italian food. Filini could easily be placed on the main streets of Rome with its warm welcoming atmosphere and authentic Italian cuisine. It’s well worth a visit if you are keen to sample very inspired Italian cuisine created by an almost celebrity chef with a huge personality. It’s not often we say that food reflects a chef’s personality but, if you have the good fortune of encountering Chef Luca, you will understand what we mean. We highly recommend anything on the menu but the lamb chops and beef filet medallion are phenomenal! Radisson Blu, Yas Island, 02 656 2000 Prego’s Prego’s is a contemporary, yet truly authentic, Italian restaurant. The ‘al la nonna’ (grandmother) style is revealed through the fresh homemade pasta and wood-fired pizzas. The simple concept of the restaurant compliments the homely flavors found in the Mediterranean dishes. The chef’s specialties include a polipo alla Sicilian, succulent braised veal and a generous serving of Paccheri pasta in a clam and mussel sauce. Throughout the whole menu, traditional flavors meet beautifully simple, fresh ingredients. Beach Rotana Abu Dhabi, 02 697 9011

Giornotte An all-day dining outlet during the week and a must visit Friday brunch, Giornotte is really much more than just an Italian restaurant. Walk into their cheese room on a Friday and you will immediately know what we’re talking about. The ambiance, art and architecture at The Ritz-Carlton Abu Dhabi so elegantly captures the Italian spirit. Giornotte does Italian and it does well. The Ritz-Carlton Abu Dhabi, Grand Canal, 02 818 8282 Como Como is leading the wave of new restaurants showcasing fine northern Italian dining food in a casual atmosphere. Named after Lake Como of the Lombardy region in Italy, Como encapsulates the rustic but vibrant culture of the area. The menu is rife with Italian regional classics and features a selection of traditional recipes. An innovative salad and dessert menu round out Como’s extensive menu. Al Forsan International Sports Resort, 02 556 8555 Azzurro Located in The Souk at Qaryat Al Beri you will find a stylish Italian restaurant waiting to welcome you. Azzurro is a true hidden gem, tucked away in the corner of The Souk you could easily blink and miss it. Azzurro offers a selection of Italian favorites bursting with flavor. If you’re feeling adventurous seek out this hidden gem. The Souk at Qaryat Al Beri, 02 575 9993 Andiamo Talking about hidden gems…..unless you live in Al Zeina you probably haven’t heard of Andiamo. This sweet restaurant cum café offers some seriously cool urban Italian décor. The menu features everything Italian from paninis to baked salmon. Andiamo also offers a range of gluten free options. Al Zeina, 02 556 5775 Jazz by PizzaExpress If you like your pizza served with live jazz, book yourself a table at Jazz by PizzaExpress. The service is fast, friendly and knowledgeable. The pizza, pastas and salads are authentic Italian fare, with a few fun surprises, but the music is the big draw and it’s so good. This place rocks on weekends, so reserve your table in advance. Level 5, World Trade Center Mall, 02 304 8184 La Mamma Evoking the atmosphere of a traditional Italian trattoria, La Mamma offers both classic favorites and Chef Juri’s signature dishes, amongst them is his trademark Nutella and gelato pizza. Originally from Naples, this indulgent dish is the perfect combination of Nutella, vanilla ice cream and crunchy pizza dough sprinkled with brown sugar. Sheraton Abu Dhabi Hotel and Resort, 02 677 3333 Pappagallo If you enjoy your Italian food as the Italians do: fresh and al fresco, visit Pappagallo’s outdoor courtyard for lovely food and even better ambiance. The menu includes a host of pizzas, pastas and risottos, so there is something for everyone. It may sound trite to recommend a caprese salad, but Pappagallo’s is really next level and their steaks and meat dishes are also cooked to perfection. Le Méridien Village, 02 644 6666

Casual Dining Buca di Beppo Buca di Beppo’s snowball sized, half-pound meatballs will have your Italian nonna’s seal of approval. The famous Italian-American joint looks like a replica of New York City’s famous 42nd Street Italian mobster-style outpost for touristy fun. Using the freshest ingredients, all dishes are served in family-style that are meant to be shared by the entire table. Yas Mall, 02 665 6247 Carluccio’s Carluccio’s is a restaurant, café and food shop, open throughout the day for a delicious Italian breakfast, lunch and dinner. The chefs in the outlet’s open kitchens make all the food by hand including pastas and breads. The eatery is well-known for its pastas, wood fired pizzas, classic Italian desserts, fresh salads and antipasti to name a few, but it’s deli is unrivalled – offering a scrumptious selection of fresh meats, cheese, salads, olives, tarts and baked food items. Though you don’t need an excuse to eat here, its location is perfect for the post-shopping weary who need to fuel up. Yas Mall, 02 565 1004 Biancorosso While the best pizza in the capital is up for debate, so many locals love Biancorosso, put this spot down on your pizza bucket list. Located in Al Nahyan, this bright and artsy spot is popular as both a restaurant and takeaway and the pizza is what everyone comes for. There are over 30 pizzas to choose from, including a good variety of vegetarian pizzas and ‘pizza bianca’ – pizzas without a tomato base. Take one of their fancier pizzas, for a spin and you can thank us later. Al Nahyan, 02 658 4244 Pizza di Rocco Pizza di Rocco just keeps winning awards and there is a good reason for that, everyone in town can’t get enough of it. It’s possibly the best pizza in town. The price point is great if you seek casual Italian, but Pizza di Rocco is all about ordering in and they deliver fast and piping hot. If you are keen to try pizza with some pizzazz, order their incomparable laziza pizza with mozzarella, fresh zaatar, oven-roasted chicken, halloumi and garlic. If you are a fan of zaatar, a healthy sprinkling of it over a chicken pizza is nothing short of a revelation. Pizza di Rocco, Al Salam Street and Etihad Plaza Khalifa City A, 02 885 3222

Market Kitchen

22 | Dining and Nightlife Abu Dhabi

Located within Le Royal Méridien Abu Dhabi, Market Kitchen serves up modern American cuisine. Promising market freshness and the highest quality ingredients, dishes are inspired by the classic cuisine of 3-starred Michelin Chef, Jean-George Vongerichten. The restaurant décor is modern and has a New York loft vibe. White painted brick walls are decorated with wooden shelving, holding household décor and kitchen tools. The dark wooden floors and metal hanging lamps dimly light the tables, giving the restaurant a cosy yet urban feel. The high beamed vaulting, floor to ceiling windows and the tree in the middle of the restaurant create the feeling of a relaxed, casual outdoor dinner party with friends. Upstairs the bar provides a little hideaway overlooking the restaurant. The menu is intriguing, accentuating the best of high quality American cuisine. The appetizers of foie gras brûlée with toasted brioche and spicy fig jam is outstanding. The foie gras sits atop of the beautifully toasted brioche, the serving is more than generous and the fig jam is just sensational. The fresh burrata comes served with marinated peppers, sourdough bread and drizzled in olive oil. We cut into the burrata as if we are cutting into butter, the soft cheese centre oozes onto our plate. Most people would think there is no need for the complimenting grilled sourdough bread but in effect it actually provides a perfect balance of tanginess. Veering onto our main course we select the popular soy glazed short ribs with apple jalapeno puree and rosemary crumbs along with the grilled tenderloin atop of creamed spinach, sugar snaps and onion rings. The soy glazed short ribs are beautifully presented, set in the middle of the plate the vibrant greens of the apple jalapeno puree make it a feast for the eyes as much as the senses. The soy ribs are beautifully marinated and literally flake off our fork. The apple adds a welcome zest to the dish which works perfectly. The grilled tenderloin has been cooked to perfection, it’s refreshing to find a chef that will make your steak just as you ordered it, medium-well, not always a given. Each classic protein has been reinvented using complex flavours and techniques. There is an excellent array of desserts to send everyone home satisfied. Whilst the warm chocolate cake is recommended, we decide to go for the sweet salted caramel ice cream sundae. Three large scoops of ice cream are placed on a mountain of popcorn, drizzled in chocolate sauce and sprinkled with nuts. This is a taste explosion and the perfect finish to a wonderful dining experience. From its stylish décor to its intriguing menu Market Kitchen provides the perfect dining experience. The team at Market Kitchen have created a menu that will ignite your palate and leave you wanting more. Portions are more than generous making this one fine dining menu worth every dirham. Be sure to try Market Kitchen’s Thursday night evening brunch which will let you indulge in a tapas style sharing menu with free flowing beverages for AED 200*, every Thursday from 8.30pm to 11.00pm. BU! Friday Brunch Kid Designed and Kid Approved! Are you tired of going to brunches and there being nothing to do for the kids and worst no kid friendly food? Well, BU! the city’s hottest new Latin American spot, has you covered. Their new Friday brunch has a tasty new menu for kids, designed by a kid. But never fear, parents! There is an amazing selection of food for the grown-ups too so you and your little one can enjoy a tasty Friday brunch. Dining and Nightlife Abu Dhabi caught a few moments in between school and work with the city’s youngest chef, Vivya Kalwani. Though only 8 years old, you won’t find Vivya on the swings; you’ll find her in the kitchen whipping up fun and, yes, healthy food with parents at BU! Because cooking is what Vivya does for fun! How old are you and where are you from? My name is Vivya Kalwani and I am eight years old. I’m Indian by nationality, but I was born and raised in Dubai. What is it like to be so young and contribute to a very successful brunch menu? I feel proud and happy to be able to help my mummy and my daddy with the children’s brunch menu at BU! What made you interested in cooking? Watching people cook in my house inspired me to get into the kitchen and try out a few things myself. I make delicious lemonades, soups, cookies and cakes. What would you say to someone your age who is a picky eater about why they should try everything on your kid’s menu? To the kids my age who are picky eaters, I would say “you don’t know if you like it until you try it”. Everything on BU!’s kids menu is tasty and delicious and worth a try. How important to you, as a kid, is it too eat healthy food and why? Healthy food is very important to me because I know people with diabetes and eating healthy is one way you can look after yourself. What’s your favorite food? My favorite food is grilled chicken with BBQ sauce or ketchup. When you are not in the kitchen cooking up a storm, where would we find you on a Saturday afternoon in Abu Dhabi? When I’m free in Abu Dhabi I usually help my parents out with their work at BU! If there is no work for me to do, I take the time to practice by hobbies, such as dancing, arts, crafts and playing the piano. The capital’s favorite Pan Latin destination has launched a Friday brunch so family-friendly your kids will beg you to take them. Its kid approved because it has a menu designed by a kid, the chef’s daughter, Vivya Kalwani. Not only is the menu marvelous, there’s a full range of exciting and entertaining activities for kids, including face painting, games and movie screenings. The menu features a selection of not-too-naughty, yet delicious dishes such as chicken quesadillas, pasta pomodoro, mini chaufa rice and fresh fruit salad for dessert. But don’t worry, parents. BU!’s Friday brunch still offers all the amazing Pan Latin dishes you have come to love, such as papas bravas (potato, garlic, mayonnaise, Guajillo, and paprika), and arroz chaufa (mixed sea food served alongside onion, cream, chilli, and parmesan crust). Don’t leave without sampling the mouth-watering dessert tasting platter, which is so moreish, it will be the talk of the table. BU!, Level 4, The Hub, The Mall at World Trade Center, 02 666 8066

JB’s Gastropub

36 | Dining and Nightlife Abu Dhabi

It’s not every day we travel to Dubai to do a review but the promise of proper British fish and chips has us eagerly travelling up the E11. JB’s Gastropub made quite a noise when it opened its doors six month ago. Since its opening JB’s continues to draw in hordes of expats looking for a taste of home and a place to unwind. You can enter JB’s Gastropub from its own side entrance, although it is part of Amwaj Rotana, Jumeirah Beach Residence Hotel. As we enter, JB’s is already packed, and it’s only 8.00pm. The décor features bare bricks with wrought iron frames used to highlight the indoor trees, lit from underneath, setting a stylish yet relaxed atmosphere. JB’s is split into a dining and bar area and also offers some outdoor seating, but you’ll have to be quick as tables outside are limited. Our waiter is friendly and informative and takes us through the menu. The menu is split into various sections including, small plates, boards and platters, mac and cheese and in the pot. Although extensive, the menu has been creatively designed to ensure guests are not daunted by such a wide variety of dishes. On offer is authentic British and American fare with a modern touch. Prices are extremely reasonable, especially given the portion size. Small dishes average around AED 45 with most main dishes coming in at AED 70. From the small plates section we order the foie gras, duck liver terrine with chutney, red onion marmalade and toast and from the bar bites and flights section we order the messy prawns. The foie gras is delicious, rich and creamy we indulge in every bite. We must admit we were slightly skeptical as normally this dish is only reserved for fine dining restaurants, but JB’s just rewrote the rule book. The messy prawns are equally as enjoyable, thick succulent messy prawns, infused with garlic and paprika, phenomenal. However the star of the show is the dish we just drove all the way from Abu Dhabi for, the fish and chips. Placed before us is a large silver plate. Thick hand cut chips lay beneath the golden brown glistening cod, perfectly accompanied with mushy peas and tartar sauce. The aroma has us reminiscing of summers at the Gower. As we take our knife and cut into the fish, the crispy batter crackles, only to unveil thick white chunks of cod. Not to be ignored are the thick hand cut chips and mushy peas, these are also done to perfection. Rejoice, we have finally found fish and chips that would satisfies any Brits cravings. Finally for the dessert, just when we thought it couldn’t get any better they bring out the Strawberry Yum. This dessert will have you feeling like a kid again but don’t be fooled the portion is most definitely for grown-ups. A tower of ice cream, layers fresh thick whipped cream, marshmallows and fresh cut strawberries topped with an ice cream cone and a side of dipping chocolate and popping candy has us in awe. This dessert is great fun, a brilliant talking point and totally Instagram worthy. If you’re looking for a welcoming, chilled out vibe, good food at a decent price and happen to be in JBR we would most definitely recommend JB’s Gastropub. JB’s Gastropub, Amwaj Rotana, JBR, Dubai, 04 428 2000
