The Journey of a Fo odie

6. Doner You’ll find these almost everywhere on Istanbul’s popular Istiklal Street. Pretty much similar to a shawarma, a Doner is a fast-food dish comprising of grilled meat and salad served in pitta bread with chilli sauce.

7. Balik Ekmek

Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia … sounds all too familiar doesn’t it? I’m referring to none other than Istanbul. Besides being famous for its historical monuments and bargain shopping, Istanbul is a foodie paradise. Before heading there, I made a bucket list of things to eat! To me, sightseeing and eating go hand in hand. Here’s my list of top 10 must-try foods in Turkey’s most well known city.

Also known as fish sandwich and available in a number of little food joints under the Galata Bridge. Who doesn’t love a bun loaded with a large chunk of grilled Mackerel and salad?

1. Borek

9. Pide

A baked flaky pastry filled with feta cheese, spinach or meat. We enjoyed a warm Borek and a cup of Turkish coffee at a little place known as Borek Centre.

A Turkish version of pizza. Except that it is lighter, tastier and oval shaped.

2. Midye Dolma You can never leave Istanbul without trying these! Basically, they are mussels stuffed with seasoned rice. The guy gives you a plate and he keeps filling your plate with these little gems until you tell him to stop. You can eat as much as you want for 1 TL per mussel. At some places it cost even less.

3. Kumpir Warm baked potato, fluffed and topped with a number of ingredients of your choice. If you see a mountain of butter, it means you’ve found a Kumpir shop! My personal favorite was the mushroom, olive and quinoa combo.

4. Kokorec Beware! This is not for the faint hearted. It might look like a shawarma, however isn’t. It’s a mix of intestines and other internals of lamb or goat grilled, perfectly seasoned and served in a wrap.

5. Sahlep Okay, this doesn’t qualify as “food”, but we ditched the caffeine almost every day for this warm and creamy orchid root drink topped with cinnamon powder. It tastes even better on a cold, rainy day.

8. Simit A sesame covered pretzel sold on a red cart near some of Istanbul’s popular attractions. Cheese or Nutella? You choose!

10. Dondurma Everyone loves a good Turkish ice cream and the stunts that come along with them! They are completely different in texture. For instance, they are chewy and don’t melt that easily. I tried the one at Mado. I’ve just made your work easier for your trip to Istanbul. You’re welcome! Happy travels and happy eating! Belgian CafĂŠ

InterContinental Abu Dhabi

10 | Dining and Nightlife Abu Dhabi

If you want to catch up with old friends or see in the weekend why not head to one of Abu Dhabi’s most popular hangouts. Belgian Café located in the InterContinental Abu Dhabi boasts unrivalled marina views, friendly service, a selection of Belgian hops and delicious dishes that would satisfy any foodie. The brasserie influenced interior offers a relaxed, unpretentious and inviting atmosphere. You won’t feel out of place if you’re dressed to the nines or in jeans and a top, making it perfect for that last minute get together. The menu offers a selection of mouth-watering dishes from stupendous seafood to hearty burgers. For starters we select the tuna tartar and shrimp with Marie Rose sauce and Boston lettuce. Before our starters arrive we are presented with a Belgian Café brown paper bag, inside is a selection of warm freshly baked bread rolls, let’s face it who can resist a warm bread roll? Shortly after our starters arrive. It’s not what we are expecting, it’s even better. The presentation is sublime, the tuna tartar is presented in a large fish bowl which sits upon a black slate plate, elegantly decorated with wild rocket, apple and beetroot, perfectly placed on a toasted baguette. Fresh cuts of tuna have been infused with a blend of caper berries, horseradish, dill shallots and parsley, a light and refreshing dish. The shrimp with Marie Rose sauce and Boston lettuce is equally as scrumptious, five large voluptuous shrimps hang prominently on the corner of the salad filled bowl. As we tuck in, silence falls over the table, a clear sign that we are enjoying our food so much there is little time for conversation. The starters are wonderful and have us eagerly looking forward to the main course. For the main course I opted for the signature mussels in garlic and cream sauce whilst my colleague selects the Wagyu burger. The mussels arrive presented in a black pot, as I lift the lid the steaming fresh mussels engulf my senses in a cloud of alluring creamy garlic. The Wagyu burger sits prominently on a wooden board decorated with a side of thick cut Belgian fries. The mussels are phenomenal each bite is as good as the next, the sauce is perfectly balanced not to creamy or overpowering it perfectly complements the mussels without taking away from the dish. The sauce was so good I use my bread roll to mop up every last bit. The Wagyu burger is equally as yummy. The Wagyu is perfectly paired with the fig onion brioche bun giving it a slight sweet taste, similar to that of caramelized onions but a much more ingenious twist. Hardly able to move we take a moment to digest our meal. The portions are more than generous, you won’t have to worry about getting your money’s worth here, your only issue will be finishing your plate. After a while curiosity gets the better of us and we take a glance at the dessert menu. The signature traditional Brussel waffle catches our attention. We decide to share, how could we resist. A warm fluffy waffle is placed before us. Layers of whipped cream dance around the plate decorated with fresh cut strawberries and served with a small bowl of melted chocolate and vanilla ice cream. What we particularly liked about this dessert is that it wasn’t heavy but instead offered the perfect ending to a great dining experience. Overall Belgian Café impressed, we arrived expecting a selection of pub grub but what we actually found was a selection of delicious, well presented and reasonably priced dishes. We reveal how to save your lunch money without sacrificing quality at some of Abu Dhabi’s top fine dining restaurants. It’s well known that fine dining doesn’t always come cheap. The brilliant white linen, the snappily dressed servers and years of late nights and hard-earned kitchen experience come at a price. While it’s true that there is no such thing as a “free lunch”, it’s possible to enjoy a great lunch in the capital without having to hock the family silver. Thankfully, many of the outlets on Abu Dhabi’s fine dining scene offer express lunch entry point for the cash-strapped to dine at top restaurants without a fatal blow to your credit line. Of course, the frugal fine dining option might mean a bit of compromise and flexibility: lunch rather than dinner and certain day and time constraints, but it’s well worth the effort. Here are our top picks for the newest and nicest places to do lunch.

Dining Tonight we are dining at 18˚, Hyatt Capital Gate’s signature restaurant located on the 18th floor. 18˚ is just one of the many dining options Executive Sous Chef, Michéle Müller is in charge of. Executive Sous Chef, Michéle Müller is one of our favourite chefs in Abu Dhabi, her recipes are always light yet flavourful. We are eagerly anticipating our meal tonight. 18˚ offers guests the opportunity to enjoy outdoor dining on the terrace however tonight we select one of the comfortable booths. The restaurant is sophisticated and offers stunning city and water views, perfect for a romantic evening or a cosy atmosphere when catching up with friends. Three show kitchens with interactive counters add to the theatrical “mise en scene” of the restaurant. To start we order the creamy burrata cheese, Datterino tomato with basil and the fatoosh. The burrata is amazing, the harder outside cheese is cut to unveil and soft moist centre, perfectly complimented with the Datterino tomatoes and basil. The fatoosh is a mix of tomato, cucumber, onion, lettuce, red radish, mint, pomegranate with crisp bread croutons. Simple yet delicious. For mains we select the grilled tiger prawns, harrah salsa, jerjeer and the beef tenderloin, pistachio mustard crunch with pomegranate for our side dish we order the saffron rice. Both dishes are well presented and arrive within a good time of us finishing our starters. Three large grilled tiger prawns sit on the plate, perfectly grilled and mouth-watering, we waste no time enjoying this fine culinary delight. The saffron rice wonderfully accompanies the prawns. The beef tenderloin is served on a bed of mash potato and topped with crushed pistachio and sprinkled in pomegranate, the colours burst off the plate. The tenderloin is succulent and the sweetness of the pomegranate when met with the crunchiness of the pistachios makes for a wonderful experience.

Brunch The next day we get ready and make our way to brunch. Sticking to the core restaurant concept The Sky Brunch offers a wide selection of simple yet sophisticated Eastern Mediterranean fare. The brunch features a selection of cold cuts, cheeses, fresh seafood, Mediterranean appetisers, meat from the grill, Asian dishes, an ice cream and dessert counter. Also on offer is an a la carte menu where guests are able to sample a selection of dishes taken from the main menu. To start we enjoy a selection of fresh seafood from oysters, blue crab to the steamed kinkawooka mussels. The seafood is delicious and you can literally taste the freshness. As we walk around the brunch we notice the homemade steamed bun with a selection of protein, hoisin sauce, pickled cucumber and spring onion. This is one of our favourite dishes and we don’t waste anytime ordering the beef bun. The fluffiness of the bun is divine and the hoisin sauce perfectly adds a hint of sweetness to the sumptuous beef. This dish was so good we would go back just for this! From the a la carte menu we select the pan fried scallops, braised leek, saffron orange sauce, with crispy baby spinach and the honey and zaatar crusted rack of lamb, quinoa with green olive tabbouleh. The scallops are sensational the saffron orange sauce adds a tangy zest to the dish making a traditionally bland dish flavourful. The honey and zaatar crusted rack of lamb is equally as sensational. The lamb is luscious and with every mouthful we enjoy another aspect of the dish. The Sky Brunch is available every Friday from 1:00pm to 4:00pm. Prices start at AED 150 and are subject to 10% service charge and 6% tourism fee.

The Meat Co. Sunset BBQ

24 | Dining and Nightlife Abu Dhabi

Located in Abu Dhabi’s Souk Qaryat Al Beri, The Meat Co. is a two story restaurant offering some of the best views and the best cuts in town. The restaurant uses a blend of natural materials and tones reflecting a contemporary African theme. Today we are visiting The Meat Co. to experience their new Sunset BBQ. Available every Sunday guests are invited to indulge in a selection of unlimited freshly prepared grills. Guests can select steak fillet, sirloin steak, lamb, chicken or shrimp skewers. But the goodness does not stop there, sides include jacket potatoes, corn on the cob, baked beans, steamed vegetables, Caesar salad, Greek salad, potato salad and a dessert corner featuring crème brûlée, Nutella cheesecake, lemon tart and chocolate marshmallows. As we arrive, the venue is already buzzing. The hustle and bustle of diners sets the tone for a nice relaxing evening. Luckily we manage to get a table outside so we can enjoy the enchanting views of Sheik Zayed Grand Mosque. Our waiter Ed introduces himself and talks us through the concept. Ed is full of life, no stiff service here. This is one aspect of The Meat Co. that always impresses us, the team here are full of energy and genuinely enjoy interacting with guests. You will struggle to find a warmer welcome. Drinks ordered, we waste no time making or way to the BBQ. What instantly catches our attention is that chef is preparing small quantities of each selection of grill, meaning that your food is literally from BBQ to plate and thankfully not sat in a chafing dish. We select the lamb, shrimps and of course the sirloin steak, for our sides, jacket potato, corn on the cob and Caesar salad. The lamb, shrimps and steak taste sensational, there’s a certain taste that cannot compare to that of a fresh BBQ. The sides are also wonderful, the team ensures that small quantities are available but constantly replenished, ensuring that you can enjoy a fresh side each and every time. We also try the sliders, mini burger bites of sheer yumminess and again cooked fresh from the BBQ. Worth mentioning is the bread, I know it may sound funny but seriously try the beetroot and chocolate bread. You have never tasted anything like it, it’s delicious. We did manage to squeeze in a small dessert, although we are desperate to try the Nutella cheesecake we only managed to share a small pot of crème brûlée. We absolutely love the BBQ concept, uncomplicated and simple, yet done to perfection. Who doesn’t like a good BBQ? This is the perfect way to spend a lazy Sunday evening. The BBQ is available every Sunday from 6.00pm to 10.00pm. Visit the BBQ buffet as many times as you like for AED 190 plus soft drinks or AED 290 with hops and grape options. The Meat Co. Tawa Bakery

28 | Dining and Nightlife Abu Dhabi

When your average foodie wanders into Tawa Bakery, the city’s only exclusively gluten free restaurant in town, it’s a sight to behold. Shelves of steaming, fresh out of the oven loaves of bread adorn the walls and decadent looking sweets gild the glass cases. When someone who suffers from celiac disease or even a mild gluten allergy enters Tawa, it’s a revelation. “I can eat everything in here? The calamari? Even the eclairs? Burger rolls are never, ever gluten free?” “Yes, Yes, and Yes,” our server nods. “You can eat absolutely everything on the menu. It’s all gluten free and prepared with only gluten free ingredients. Guaranteed.” The drink selection immediately stands out, numerous fresh juice, teas and coffees abound and they are inspiring. Some are fresh and healthy, spicy and exotic. We select the Desert Rain (lychee with lemongrass tea iced-tea) and Passion (passion fruit and jasmine iced tea). They are prepared to order swiftly in the bar area. We sip our cool drinks and peruse the menu. My companion is in a mixed state of bliss and indecision. She was diagnosed over thirteen years ago with a gluten allergy and almost 90% of the menu contains items she’d previously never dare order out for fear of traces of gluten. She has no idea what to order. She has not had restaurant fried calamari since her diagnosis and burger buns are normally dry and taste terrible, she tells me, so she orders calamari and Tawa Wagyu burger. I am not gluten intolerant, so I expect what I have experienced in the past, dry, flaky and sometimes odious experiments with unusual flavors that never taste quite right, so I opt for the spicy pumpkin soup and go all in and order a gluten free pizza, which, in my experience, usually taste awful. The staff are articulate and knowledgeable, which is reassuring in a situation that involves a potentially life threatening allergy. The spicy pumpkin soup arrives and is piquant and steaming with an earthy and fragrant circle of truffle oil. The flavors meld into a soup so comforting; I add it to a mental list of things to eat when I am not feeling great or homesick. The calamari is perfect! Calamari can be a dicey business in even the best restaurants. When calamari is done wrong, it’s easy to describe but when calamari is done right, it’s indescribable. This gluten free version has just the right amount of light, peppery crunch. The Tawa Wagyu burger is placed before my companion and it was as if she’d been reacquainted with a long lost friend. She remarks on how soft and fresh the bun is. Usually gluten free bread is made in a bakery far away and has probably sat a bit too long on a shelf somewhere and the taste and texture reflect its expiration. Not the case at Tawa. Tawa’s bread is made fresh, daily on the premises. The burger is topped with beetroot, rocket and a spicy mayo and is one colorful and healthful meal. The sides of mixed greens with tangy vinaigrette and truffle fries round out an already perfect dish. The pizza is quite good. The crust of a gluten free pizza usually has a texture akin to cardboard, so the sheer fact that this thin and crispy slice held together nicely and tasted good, would be enough to please any person who has long been deprived of restaurant style pizza. The dessert counter is a feast for the eyes. We opt for the Nutella brownie and the banoffee pie. Either option is enough to cure a sugar fix for weeks. They are both decadent and you would never taste the difference. It’s safe to say my companion is going to be a regular at Tawa. You probably wonder would I, a person who frequently dines out, with no gluten issues would eat there again? Absolutely! The flavors are fresh, the bread tastes inspired and the recipes are well thought out. The drinks and desserts are standout. Tawa serves simple and honest comfort food that is not just very good for gluten free, it’s so good that it will leave you wondering “who needs gluten anyway?” Tawa Bakery, Al Muneera 800 8292 May | 29

Sunset Drinks Our Top 5 picks

Abu Dhabi’s weather is absolutely perfect right now but it won’t be long before the temperature gauge is off the scale and the humidity kicks in, so while it’s still bearable to be outside it’s time to seek out the city’s best spots for a cheeky sundowner. A gentle sea breeze, a stretch of clean white sand and crashing waves are the perfect backdrop for a sundowner or two whilst watching a picturesque sunset. Here’s a few of my favourite spots to kick back with friends, family or wow some visitors during the day and into the night. Asia de Cuba Chino-Latino favourite Asia de Cuba is so hot right now, a place to see and be seen especially on the beach deck at weekends. Vibrant Latin sounds and flavoursome cuisine inspired by Havana’s Chinatown make this venue unique. The vibe is always good on the colourful outdoor terrace, whisking guests to the heady heights of Cuban night’s right here on our very own Corniche. Refreshing mixers, delicious bites and good service guarantee this bar, restaurant and lounge offers a continued flow of satisfied customers and a good party atmosphere. Relax in a Cabana beachside, prop yourself up at the bar or central sharing table or salsa the night away, the choice is all yours. Friday brunch is always good too, lots of food served sharing style that includes ‘La Caja China’ Cuban barbeque in a box offerings, fresh ceviche and salads as well as moreish desserts and signature drinks. Friday Chino-Latino Brunch by the Beach and Caja China BBQ on Saturday, both available from 12.00noon to 4.00pm. Up tempo Cuban five piece band Sinco Pa Ti perform live on the terrace on Thursday evenings and all day Friday. Asia de Cuba, 02 699 3333 The Beach House The Beach House sits on a vast stretch of environmentally protected white sand beach as part of the Park Hyatt Abu Dhabi. This two-storey standalone venue offers guests a romantic beach setting serving a delicious Mediterranean menu and selection of grape and mixers in the ground floor restaurant. After dinner sip a mixer against the stunning ocean backdrop whilst listening to chill out tunes and admiring the view across the Arabian Sea.

The week long food festival will see each of the five restaurants at Yas Viceroy Abu Dhabi offering special two-course or three-course set menus, showcasing a selection of the restaurant’s very best dishes. We had the opportunity to try some of the dishes in advance and we can tell you, you are in for a treat! From the Japanese tasting menu we enjoyed a Japanese tasting tapas consisting of crispy rice with creamy tuna., seared salmon with Jalapeno dressing, crab and wasabi tacos and new style sushi. Whilst all the dishes were delightful the star of the show had to be the seared salmon with Jalapeno dressing. We absolutely loved the way the Jalapeno paste elevated the seared salmon and blended the flakiness of the fish with the silk like taste of the Jalapeno paste, without overpowering our taste buds. From Angar we tasted the signature lamb curry. The braised lamb had a tender and velvety texture emphasised by the creamy coconut and thick cut morels. Kazu will treat those who love the taste of the east, guests will be able to feast on edamame and miso soup followed by Angus beef Robatayaki and salmon skewers. Friends and families can delve into flavours of China at Noodle Box with a selection of Chef’s dim sum, Szechuan style steamed sea bass and the signature banana fritters with ginger ice cream.
