Curry Club Every Wednesday guests can enjoy a unique Curry Club at the popular Indian restaurant, Angar, located in Yas Viceroy, Abu Dhabi. Priced at AED 220 per person, guests can indulge in three set starters, a choice of four mains, served with rice, cucumber raita, naan and chass along with two set desserts and a beverage. We venture to Yas Viceroy to check out Curry Club and all that it has to offer. As we enter, the restaurant is already busy with large groups enjoying their evening. Angar offers a sophisticated yet relaxed ambiance. Tables are decorated with retro Bollywood movie posters and small tea lights. As we look through the menu, we are presented with a selection of poppadoms and dips. We begin with the Pani Puri, hollow puries served with tangy water. We pour the tangy water into the Puri and enjoy in one bite, it bursts in our mouth releasing a myriad of flavors. The Jhal Muri is presented in a small tube, the tangy mixture of puffed rice, peanuts, sev and spiced tamarind vinaigrette is enjoyed in small handfuls. Our final dish from the starters the Bhatti Ka Murgh is our favorite, home smoked chicken breast marinated with onions and spices. The chicken is delicious, it flakes off the fork and the marination with the spices only further emphasizes the scrumptious taste from fork to mouth.

6 | Dining and Nightlife Abu Dhabi

For our mains we each have a choice of four dishes from the twelve on the menu, dishes range from spicy to mild, fish, chicken, lamb to vegetarian. We make our selection and eagerly await our main course. Whilst waiting for the main course the waiter keeps us entertained with a game. We are given a scented cloth and asked to identify the herbs and spices. This is much more difficult than it seems but yet good fun.

The main course arrives, we are both presented with a large tray that holds each of our bespoke selections along with burning cinnamon sticks, used to clear our senses. I have selected the Vegetable Jalfrezi, Dal Makhani, Goan Fish Curry and the Kadai Prawns whilst my dining companion opts for the Butter Chicken, Lamb Coconut Korma, Chicken Tikka Masala and the Saag Aloo. Both are served with steamed rice, cucumber raita, naan and chass. All the dishes taste phenomenal but the Butter Chicken, Dal Makhani and Kadai Prawns are our favorite. The Butter Chicken is chicken tikka steeped in tomato butter sauce, rich, thick and creamy. The Dal Makhani, slow cooked black lentils with butter and tomato has a lot of texture and is perfect for dipping our naan bread. The Kadai Prawns offers thick juicy black tiger prawns sautĂŠed with bell peppers and Kadai spices, delicious. Finally dessert, dessert consists of two set desserts the Saffron Rasmalai, poached milk dumplings infused with Kashmiri saffron and Hai Panna Cotta, panna cotta flavored with Indian tea. Well presented the Saffron Rasmalai is our favorite and the perfect ending to our Curry Club experience. Overall if you enjoy Indian cuisine and like value for money we cannot recommend Curry Club enough. The dishes are delectable, the team are welcoming and the portions are generous. Curry Club has just made Wednesdays the new night out! Curry Club every Wednesday from 7:00pm to 11:00pm, AED 220 net per person including a beverage. Angar, Yas Viceroy Abu Dhabi, 02 656 0600

Sontaya

8 | Dining and Nightlife Abu Dhabi

Today we are visiting Sontaya, one of Abu Dhabi’s most celebrated Asian restaurants located in The St. Regis Saadiyat Island Resort. Sontaya is nestled in the hotels grounds, set amongst a series of floating pavilions that look out onto the pristine beach and the glistening Arabian Gulf. Its late in the evening when we arrive at Sontaya, the sound of water flowing under the pavilions and the dim amber lighting set the tone for a relaxing evening. As we enter the restaurant we are taken back by its exquisiteness, the sliding doors have been opened to give the illusion that Sontaya is floating on a bed of water, the moon shines down from the clear night sky illuminating our surroundings, a perfect setting. As we look through the menu we enjoy two refreshing mocktails, Natura, fresh strawberry, grapefruit juice and rose syrup, floated with berry tea and Nirvana, fresh lychee muddled with sour mix, cranberry juice, topped up with ginger ale. For appetizers I decide to order the Pan Fried Crab Cakes, four plump pieces of crab meat, dill, shallot, chili, served with lobster mayonnaise and mango salad. My dining companion orders the Pomelo Salad from the vegetarian corner. The Pomelo Salad is tossed in homemade tamarind dressing, crushed peanut and roasted coconut. The appetizers are delicious but the Pomelo Salad is exceptional. The chef has perfectly balanced the flavours to create a memorable dish. Before our mains arrive we decide to sample the Tom Yum Soup, hot and sour soup with king prawns, lemongrass, coriander, kaffir lime leaves and mushrooms. We request that the team prepare this mild. The Tom Yum Soup is rich and flavourful, we’d go as far as saying this is one of the best we have tasted in the city. Our main courses compromise of the Caramelized Chili and Lemongrass Salmon, glazed fillet salmon with chili and lemongrass sauce, compressed cucumber, burnt spring onion and bok choy along with the Poached Seabass Fillet in soya sauce, bok choy, coriander, spring onion, red chili and ginger. The Poached Seabass perfectly flakes off our fork and the light chili and ginger flavours compliment the fish. The Caramelized Chili and Lemongrass Salmon is an impressive dish and one we would return for, the chili and lemongrass offer a distinctive and palatable flavour whilst the salmon skin has been removed and fried adding additional texture to the dish. For our side dishes we enjoy Coconut Rice and Broccoli with garlic and oyster sauce. Its refreshing to see the Broccoli isn’t being served with chili like most restaurants, Sontaya’s version offers a subtler flavour complimenting the mains. For dessert we opt for the Fallen Coconut. This dessert is beautifully crafted, light meringue is dipped in chocolate forming the coconut shell, this is then filled with creamy mango bavaroise, mango caviar, passion fruit coulis and Thai coconut sherbet. A perfect end to our dining experience. Overall Sontaya exceeded all our expectations, from taste to presentation each and every dish was enjoyable, from salty to sweet and hot to sour the menu offers something for all palates. Sontaya also offers a comprehensive vegetarian menu alongside gluten free options. With its fabulous cuisine and elegant setting, we would highly recommend Sontaya as the perfect Valentines destination. Enjoy a romantic four course dinner at Sontaya for AED 350 per person food only. Pan Fried Crab Cakes AED 95 Pomelo Salad AED 65 Tom Yum Soup AED 80 Caramelized Chili and Lemongrass Salmon AED 195 Poached Seabass Fillet AED 190 Coconut Rice AED 25 Broccoli AED 40 Fallen Coconut AED 55 Sontaya, The St. Regis Saadiyat Island Resort, 02 498 8443

Today we are venturing to Yas Island Rotana, Abu Dhabi to try their Fire and Spice Brunch. Fire and Spice promises brunch goers a gastronomical journey from east to west combining, BBQ grills, Rangoli’s authentic Indian dishes and the international flavors of Choices restaurant, all into one delectable brunch.

We approach Choices and are welcomed by the team who also take the time to show us around the brunch, ensuring that nothing is overlooked. Located in Choices are the salads, desserts, cold cuts, soups, breads, cheeses, sushi, seafood, Asian and Arabic selections. As we walk outside onto the patio here is where we find the grill area. The grill area offers a selection of succulent grills from chicken, ribs to beef. Finally, we make our way to Rangoli, here are a selection of aromatic curries served with warm naan. Having skipped breakfast today the tour of the brunch and the smell of the cuisine only heightens our sense of hunger, we grab our plates and head towards our first stop, the seafood. We fill our plate with marinated mussels, clams, crab and the half fresh oysters, the seafood is fresh and perfectly marinated. My dining partner opts for the fresh black mussels in fennel broth with a slice of rustic bread, perfect for dipping in the broth. Next, I decide to try the grills, the smell is to alluring to pass. I select the 72 hour smoked BBQ ribs, they flake off the bone and the smoky flavor compliments the sauce. My dining companion returns from Rangoli with a selection of curries, the butter chicken seems to be a favorite. Wanting to try a few of the Arabic and Asian dishes we sample the chicken stir fry with cashew nuts and the lamb ouzi both are delectable and appealing. 16 | Dining and Nightlife Abu Dhabi

Four Seasons Hotel Abu Dhabi This month we venture to the luxurious Four Seasons Hotel Abu Dhabi located on Al Maryah Island. The hotel is renowned amongst residents for its high caliber of dining and entertainment. The Four Seasons Hotel Abu Dhabi offers six restaurants and lounges each with waterfront terraces. Highly regarded are Café Milano and Butcher and Still. Café Milano originates from Washington, DC, where it is visited daily by dignitaries. Whilst offering delicious cuisine and sophisticated surroundings the clientele at Café Milano Abu Dhabi are more of the see and be seen crowd. Butcher and Still has a more masculine tone, the sleek steakhouse boasts some of the most rustic and retro vibes we’ve seen. Inspired by the times of Al Capone and his wise guys the décor even features bullet casings, best of all are the restaurants secret features like a retractable wall that leads to an outdoor patio and a private elevator that takes guests down two levels into an ultra-private dining room. The Four Seasons Hotel Abu Dhabi also has one of the most lavish spas in the city. Dahlia Spa has eight spacious luxury spa suites and one exclusive couples’ suite, all feature private showers. Guests can also utilize separate men’s and women’s fitness centres, therapeutic facilities or the expansive outdoor pool. The hotel has two hundred accommodations, including thirty eight luxury suites which are located from the 4th to the 13th floor and offer the best views. The décor is light, airy and modern. Rooms feature a Four Seasons Bed, a plush sofa for relaxing, an oval desk that doubles as a dining table and a spa-like bathroom. Our Four Seasons experience begins as soon as we arrive at the hotel, when the valet opens my door and greets me by name, nice touch and one I wasn’t expecting. As we enter the lobby we are taken back by the bright, open space, details on the walls conjure images of ocean waves, whilst the clean white lighting only further illuminates the intricate detailing. The wealth of natural light is a theme that we will later find echoes throughout the hotel. We stop to enjoy an aromatic coffee at Al Meylas before making our way to the room. Al Meylas is located adjacent to the hotel’s lobby and has been described as a modern majlis. The views are picture perfect and as tempting as it is to visit the outdoor terrace we must make our way to our room.

For our visit, we will be staying in a Premier Four Seasons Executive Suite. As we enter the suite we are surprise by how spacious and luxurious the surroundings are. Large windows offer views across the turquoise Arabian Gulf and the city skyline. The suite features a large living room adjoining private dining room, a kitchenet, spacious bedroom, walk-in closet and a marbled bathroom, which offers guests the option of a large bath tub or separate rain shower. The suite has the option of connecting to a Premier Room for families who require additional space. The dĂŠcor features earth like tones adding to the sense of space. The luxury bath amenities are superb and by far the best we have seen, we especially like the Four Seasons branded vanity kit. We spend sometime relaxing in our room before we make our way to the spa.

20 | Dining and Nightlife Abu Dhabi

As we arrive to the spa we are warmly welcomed by our therapists. They take the time to explain the various treatments and we eventually opt for the Signature Dahlia Massage. This treatment focuses on creating a bespoke massage, guests can customize their time and therapist touch by selecting oils and massage techniques. We are given a pre-therapy form and asked to detail areas we would like our therapists to concentrate on, the style of massage, be it Swedish for an energizing effect or Asian for de-stressing. Eventually we select the 50-minute, Asian Fusion with Serenity oil, focused on releasing muscle tension. The massage is performed perfectly and we are left feeling relaxed. After our treatment we are lead into the relaxation room and offered a selection of teas and dried apricots. The relaxation room is dimly lit and feature reclinable beds with individual headsets allowing guests to prolong the sense of relaxation. After a while we decide to make use of the facilities. We enjoy a dip in the large heated hydro pool followed by a sauna. Sadly, we are rushing to get to dinner, so we don’t have time to use the steam room or the heated lounge chairs. However, we do plan on a return visit as this is one of the best spas we have experienced.

For dinner we will be dining at Café Milano. Located on the promenade level, Café Milano serves contemporary Italian cuisine in a setting reminiscent of a stylish boutique. The weather is perfect and the views and atmosphere have us feeling like we are dining on the Amalfi Coast. We order a selection of starters from the Antipasti Dal Mare we select the Sea Bass Tartare with Winter White Melon, Avocado and Thyme alongside the Roasted Octopus Salad with Diced Pumpkin, Rosemary and Taggiasche Olives followed by the Grilled Calamari, Watercress Salad, Datterini Tomato and Jalapeno. The starters are delicious but my favorite dish is the Sea Bass Tartare, this dish is light and palatable with the melon and avocado adding texture. My dining companion however is more taken by the Roasted Octopus, the lightly charcoaled essence almost dissolves in the mouth when met by the creamy pumpkin. From the Antipasti Dalla Terra we share the Burrata Chesse with Pumpkin Carpaccio, Pumpkin Seeds and Black Truffle. We are big Burrata fans and we must say this has to be one of the freshest and creamiest Burrata’s we’ve tasted in Abu Dhabi. For the main course, I select the Spaghetti with Garlic, Olive Oil, Chili Pepper, Cherry Tomato and Seafood. My dining partner opts for the Paccheri Pasta with Sautéed Shrimps and Imported Capaccian Tomato. Again, the pasta impresses, simple flavors well executed by chef and his team. At this stage we are wondering if the team at Café Milano can do no wrong, the food is perfect and the service is warm and friendly. So, we decide to test their attention to detail. I carefully place my napkin on the floor just by my feet wondering how long it will take for them to notice. Impressively enough within 10 seconds one of the team has picked up my napkin and replaced it with a fresh one. Attention to detail at its finest. For our desserts, we share the Lemon and White Chocolate Cake, Strawberries Sauce and Cocoa Crumble. A zesty finish to our dining experience. After a refreshing sleep we decide to have breakfast in our room. The breakfast consists of a fresh pancake, seasonal fruit platter, an omelette, warm muffins, a pastry selection, coffee and juices. The perfect start to the day and a wonderful end to our visit. From arrival to check out expect to be surrounded by pure luxury and bliss at the Four Seasons Hotel Abu Dhabi. However apart from the beautiful rooms, tranquil spa and delicious dining options what truly makes the Four Seasons Hotel Abu Dhabi exceptional is the level of hospitality. Going back to when we first arrived at the hotel we were welcomed by name by the valet, small touch points like these are what stay with a guest and it seems that the Four Seasons Hotel Abu Dhabi has not only lived up to the Four Seasons reputation but in our opinion exceeded it. The Four Seasons Hotel Abu Dhabi makes for the perfect destination to create those special Valentine’s Day memories. Book a Romance Package and enjoy specially selected romantic amenities including a rose petal decoration on the bed, celebration cake and a bottle of sparkling grape or sparkling grape juice upon arrival. Al Nafoura Lounge Beach Rotana Abu Dhabi has unveiled Al Nafoura Lounge, the hotels new outdoor lounge and dining area. This trendy urban hotspot boasts spanning views across the water and of the neighboring Al Maryah Island. Al Nafoura Lounge is located in the courtyard and surrounds the majestically lit fountain, which is the eponym for the lounge since Al Nafoura means fountain in Arabic. Al Nafoura Lounge has been designed as a place for gathering and relaxation with family and friends. The lounge’s comfy sofas, armchairs and carpets in grey, petrol, malachite and teak colors perfectly match the Arabic touches that blend in with the modern furniture. The concept is influenced by regional tunes showcasing Levant inspired street food alongside international creations, all intended for sharing. The menu, which includes a separate breakfast menu, is based on sharing platters and offers an immense variety from Arabic favorites to sushi, accompanied by refreshing and innovative beverages, mocktails and long drinks, only to be completed by delicious desserts, Turkish coffee or Moroccan tea. The culinary trip takes guests across several continents, one may start with traditional fattoush, continue with prawn tempura, followed by lamb kofta or a classic cheeseburger and end with a chocolate lava cake or iced watermelon with lychee. Al Nafoura Lounge is open daily from 10.30am to 12.00am, last food orders are at 11.00pm. Al Nafoura Lounge, Beach Rotana, 02 697 9011

Royal Orchid

Today we are visiting Royal Orchid, located on The Walk in Al Seef Village Compound to try out their new menu. The multi award winning restaurant offers a modern Asian menu with highlights from Thailand, Japan, China, Korea and Singapore. The weather is perfect, so we decide to sit outside and enjoy the atmosphere of The Walk. Whilst we look through the menu we enjoy some fresh coconut water straight from the coconut itself, a nice touch. To start we try two types of Dim Sum, the Philadelphia Cheese and Wild Mushroom Dumpling with Truffle Oil and the Prawn Hargow with Thai Green Curry. Both taste amazing but the Philadelphia Cheese is our favourite, its rich and creamy texture is delicious. Next the Boa Buns, these come in three options duck, tofu or chicken we opt for the Crumb Fried Chicken. Beautifully presented the light fluffy buns are filled with a generous portion of crispy chicken and topped with a sweet chili mayonnaise. Our waitress recommends we try one of the salads, admittedly we probably would have overlooked this section if she hadn’t mentioned it, but we are so glad she did. The Juicy Minced Chicken Salad with Fresh Mint, Red Chili, Paprika and Roasted Puff Rice offers a faultless combination of hot and sweet. This dish is light and full of flavour, we especially enjoy the mint.

Next the Whole Fish Cooked with Coconut Milk, Kaffir Lime Leaf and Fresh Red Chili and from the Signature Bowls the Khao Suey with Black Rice. Again, both dishes impress. The Whole Fish offers a thick and creamy broth with a slight kick from the chili, the fish is cooked well and the flavour of the ingredients echoes in every bite. The Khao Suey is however our favourite dish, we select the Black Rice which proves to be an excellent accompaniment. This dish tastes amazing and is the perfect dish for the cooler weather. Finally, to conclude we order the Sticky Banana Pudding with Homemade Coconut Jaggery, a perfect end to a great dining experience. We would recommend trying the new menu at Royal Orchid, not only does it taste great but the price makes it excellent value for money! Royal Orchid, Al Seef Village, 02 677 9967

In recent months you would have heard the word vegan mentioned quite a bit as veganism increases in popularity, but our question is, will veganism be another fad that will fill our Instagram feed for a few months or is veganism the future? During the month of January, I decided to take the Veganuary challenge and attempted to go vegan for the whole month. Here is my experience. Firstly, what is a Veganism? As described by The Vegan Society, ‘Veganism is a way of living which seeks to exclude, as far as is possible and practicable, all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose. There are many ways to embrace vegan living. Yet one thing all vegans have in common is a plant-based diet avoiding all animal foods such as meat (including fish, shellfish and insects), dairy, eggs and honey - as well as products like leather and any products tested on animals. Aren’t Vegans and Vegetarians the same? No, vegetarians commonly choose to eat eggs and dairy as vegans would not. However, both would not eat meat or fish. Not to be confused with Pescatarians who abstain from eating all meat and animal flesh with the exception of fish. In recent years we have seen Pescatarians increase as more people are phasing out meat before adopting a full vegetarian or vegan lifestyle. What do Vegans eat? Quite a lot it would seem. Admittedly when I first started to research a plant based diet I instantly started thinking of all the yummy food I would miss and lets be honest the word ‘plant’ doesn’t exactly conjure images of mouthwatering cuisine however once I started researching recipes I discovered that there was a whole new culinary world waiting to be explored. Here are a few meals I typically ate whilst partaking in Veganuary. Breakfast · Cereal with coconut milk · Oatmeal · Toast with jam · Pancakes · Tofu omelettes Lunch · White bean salad pita pockets · Fresh or dried fruit · Chips and salsa · Roasted veg and quinoa salad · Southwest lime corn salad Dinner · Pasta and tomato sauce · Bean burrito · Tofu lasagne · Veg and hummus tart · Sugar snap pea and carrot soba noodles Why go Vegan? Upon my research I found that many vegans had decided to go vegan because of their love of animals, this wasn’t the only reason but for many it was the key motivator. For others their health played a key factor. Adopting a plant based diet is needless to say one of the healthiest diets, many vegans report lower blood pressure and cholesterol than non-vegans. Some research has also shown vegans to have lower rates of heart disease, diabetes and some types of cancer. For many vegans environmental issues were also a concern, with so much land needed for cattle farming deforestation and its impact on global warming continue to be a concern. Why not go Vegan? I struggled to find any evidence against going vegan, but I did find a few common myths which need to be addressed. Myth - You can’t get protein from plants. Research - Green vegetables like kale, broccoli, seaweed, peas, beans and pulses, grains and nuts like brazils, peanuts, cashews, almonds, pistachios and walnuts are all excellent sources of protein. 28 | Dining and Nightlife Abu Dhabi

Vega Fad or

anism, Future?

Myth - Plants feel pain. Research - Plants do not have a nervous system and brain necessary for this to happen. Myth - Soya is just as bad for the environment as meat. Research - Soya isn’t the issue, it’s the amount of soya being produced to feed the cattle (not the vegans) that is causing environmental damage. Myth - Vegan diets make you weak. Research – Not true, like any diet ensuring that it is well balanced is key, if in doubt contact a nutritionist. Myth - We need milk for our bones. Research - We actually need calcium for our bones and Vitamin D to help absorb it. Calcium can be found in tofu, kidney beans, kale, broccoli, sweet potato and butternut squash, all easily accessible ingredients. A reliable source of Vitamin D is as simple as sitting in the sun. Well Known Vegans Many celebrities have adopted a vegan lifestyle such as, Brad Pitt, Lewis Hamilton, Woody Harrelson, Miley Cyrus, Liam Hemsworth, Jared Leto, Ariana Grande and Jennifer Lopez to name a few. Challenges I Faced The first few days were frustrating I didn’t know what I could or couldn’t eat. I spent most of my time Googling ‘Can vegans eat…’ but after some extensive research I had a better understanding, so I headed to the supermarket. This is where my next adventure began many of the products weren’t available, so I spent some additional time researching alternatives. Two hours later I finally left the supermarket confident in my efforts. Eating out was another major cause of frustration. Many restaurants didn’t even understand what the term vegan meant, and a lot thought it was the same as vegetarian. One even asked if it was an allergy (I did my best not to laugh out loud). What I Learnt Over the course of the last few weeks I learnt to cook more recipes and expanded my knowledge of flavours and nutrition. I became more conscious about what I was eating and balancing my plate to ensure I was getting all my vitamins and minerals. Planning my meals in advance helped me save a lot of money because I was only buying what was on my list. Going out also became easier, Yas Viceroy, Abu Dhabi are one of the first hotels to implement vegan menus, Café 302 has also introduced a vegan menu and Pizza Di Rocco has a selection of vegan pizzas. Products such as body wash and make-up were the easiest change to make. The Body Shop has a wide range of amazing, great smelling cruelty free products. And has even introduced a new vegan range. A quick trip to Yas Mall and I was kitted out with more strawberry moisturizer than I needed. Conclusion Throughout the last month I have learnt so much about what goes into our day to day products that I have been left shocked and disappointed by many brands. Going forward I will only ever buy cosmetics from companies like The Body Shop or Lush Cosmetics who do not test on animals. Personally, I could never go back to eating meat, I never much enjoyed the taste. I ate meat purely out of lack of time and effort, it was always easier to cook a piece of steak than prepare a wholesome meal, plus with my new found culinary skills I am enjoying exploring new flavours. Dairy wasn’t a challenge for me, apart from the occasional visit to the cheese room at brunch I’ve never enjoyed dairy. Seafood was a bit more difficult for me to abstain from however I currently eat seafood once a week and am planning on eventually phasing it out completely. I haven’t seen any changes in my skin but I have lost a few kgs as a result of Veganuary. Would I now call myself a vegan….no I wouldn’t but am I more conscious of the products I buy and the food I consume…yes. I do hope that in time I will be able to fully adopt a vegan lifestyle. As I learn more recipes and as hotels create menus to cater for vegans it will become easier to adopt a vegan lifestyle. To conclude, is veganism a fad or the future? It would seem that veganism is here to stay, is it the future? Yes, if veganism can shake its hipster image and focus on educating people about their dietary and environmental choices then I can predict more people will look to adopt a vegan lifestyle however if it continues to portray itself as a self-righteous elitist group, veganism runs the risk of becoming just another fad.
