Our Epicurean Journey With The Luxury Collection 06 | Dining and Nightlife Abu Dhabi

Recently we embarked upon a 3-day Epicurean Journey co-hosted by The Luxury Collection and the renowned Foodiva, Samantha Wood known for her honest food reviews and popular Dine Around events in Dubai. Over the course of the 3-days we ventured across the UAE exploring the best The Luxury Collection had to offer. The Luxury Collection is part of Marriott International’s portfolio and includes the brands most luxurious hotels and resorts. Each hotel and resort is a unique and cherished expression of its location; a portal to the destination’s indigenous charms and treasures. The Luxury Collection will soon be looking to make the Epicurean Journey a ticketed event, open to all to enjoy. Here is what you can expect…

Day 1 Our Epicurean Journey begins at Grosvenor House Hotel, located in Dubai Marina, the two glistening towers offer guests marina and city views, ideally located for work or play. We make our way to Siddharta Lounge by Buddha-Bar for our welcome reception and enjoy a range of canapes from Crunchy Kelloggs Prawns, Octopus Salad, Padron Pepper to live Angus Beef Tartare.

From here we head to our first destination for starters, Indego by Vineet guided by Michelin-starred Chef Vineet Bhatia himself. Here we embark upon a journey through India, enjoying a Chaat Trilogy, Tawa Lobster and Smoked Chicken Tikka. The Tawa Lobster is exceptional, tossed in garlic butter, served with a side of calamari and sprinkled with crushed spiced curry leaves. For mains we venture to our next destination RhodesW1, for a taste of European gastronomy. After a quick introduction to the menu by Michelin-starred Chef Gary Rhodes OBE, we begin our experience with Gary’s famed White Tomato Soup. The highlight of our dining experience is the Pan-Fried Salmon with candid lemon and spring onion risotto followed closely by the Macaroni Cheese with truffle and spring onion. We conclude our evening with dessert and beverages at Buddha-Bar. The energetic team welcome us with a lively beverage making session before we sit down to enjoy dessert. In true Buddha-Bar style our dessert is more like a work of art. The culinary team have covered the entire 5-meter-long table in a variety of desserts. Adding to the fun we are given an edible canvas along with edible paint.

Day 2 The next morning, we are up bright and early to make our way to our next destination, Ajman. We visit Al Zorah Mangrove Forest where under the guidance of Quest For Adventure we are taken on a kayaking trip through the mangroves. After working up an appetite we then head off to our next destination, Ajman Saray Resort. Ajman Saray Resort sits quietly on the coastline, boasting uninterrupted ocean views. Here we are treated to fresh oysters from Dibba Bay. For those of you that may not know Dibba Bay oysters are farmed locally in Northern Fujairah, therefore making them a more sustainable option. The team have created some interesting combinations, from Oysters with Spiced Tomato Cilantro, Oysters with Guacamole to Oyster Chowder. The oysters are delicious, if you like your oysters big, salty and meaty we would highly recommend trying Dibba Bay oysters. After our oyster tasting we make our way to Bab Al Bahr Beach Bar and Grill where the team have set up an elegantly decorated long table on the terrace. Starters are served to the table and consist of a variety of light and fresh dishes from Smoked Salmon Avocado and Orange Segment, Thai Beef Salad with Crispy Noodles to Scallops and Lentil Du Puy Micro Green Herb.

March | 07

The main course is a live barbeque, we are invited to enjoy Lobster Tail, Beef Sirloin, Lamb Rump Steak, Calamari and Chicken Steak to name a few. We conclude our lunch with a multitude of desserts from Chocolate Mousse, Red Velvet Cake to Macaroons. We then depart Ajman Saray Resort for our final destination Al Maha Dessert Resort and Spa Dubai. Nestled amongst the iconic amber sand dunes the resort is located within the grounds of the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve and offers distant views of the Hajar Mountains. For our stay we will be residing in the Bedouin Suite with a private pool. The Bedouin Suite is lavishly decorated with authentic Arabian furnishings and thoughtful touches such as the binoculars to admire the wildlife. Tonight’s dining experience promises to be perhaps one of the most memorable yet as the team at Al Maha have created a Bedouin desert dune dining experience fit for royalty. Set within the sand dunes and under the glistening Arabian night sky the traditional cuisine offers a perfect end to the day.

Day 3 The next morning our group enjoys an early falconry experience before a hearty breakfast in Al Diwann Restaurant. Our next adventure takes us on a desert drive around the conservation reserve where we get to see Oryx and Gazelles. Our guide explains that the reserve aims to sustain wildlife indigenous to the UAE. We conclude our experience with a wonderful lunch at Al Diwann Restaurant overlooking the ever-changing desert dunes. From celebrity chefs, local oysters to desert dining our Epicurean Journey proved to be an exhilarating exploration of the senses, from the taste of the exceptional cuisine, the sight of the breathtaking scenery at Al Maha, the touch excellence at Grosvenor House, the smell of freshly barbequed seafood at Ajman Saray to the sound of the chefs in the kitchen, our Epicurean Journey proved to be one of the most memorable experiences to date. The Luxury Collection will be teaming up with Samantha Wood aka the Foodiva to make this a ticketed event, our opinion, book it, we can assure you it will be nothing short of spectacular. www.the-luxury-collection.marriott.com Image credit: The Luxury Collection.

New Friday Hellicious Brunch

Following its fiery Dubai debut in December 2018, Gordon Ramsay’s Hell’s Kitchen has launched a Hellicious Friday Brunch at the brand-new Caesars Palace Bluewaters Dubai. Having kicked off on 22nd February 2019, the Hell’s Kitchen Hellicious Brunch will take place every Friday from 12.30pm to 4.00pm, delivering a weekend destination dining experience like no other. Taking place at the second global outpost of Hell’s Kitchen and first-of-its-kind in the Middle East, Hellicious Brunch will offer weekend diners the chance to dive in to an array of signature dishes, alongside a series of live cooking stations, al fresco pop-up stalls and live entertainment. Offering a dynamic combination of a la carte and interactive live stations, guests can expect a feast of the highest standards. Manned by teams of red and blue, following in the footsteps of Ramsay’s hit TV show, live stations will include an array of beef, salmon and tuna tartare, an oyster tower and hot starters such as all-American brunch classic Chicken and Waffles, decadent Wagyu Meatballs and ‘HK’ signature Eggs in Purgatory. Served, at the table, to order, with unlimited side dishes, mains will include the famous Beef Wellington, Crispy Skin Salmon and Mushroom and Goat Cheese Gnocchi, allowing guests to enjoy a full Hell’s Kitchen experience. Ending brunch on a suitably sweet note, the Hell’s Kitchen Hellicious Brunch is set to be the stuff of Dubai legends. Expect Sticky Toffee Pudding Pops, layers of the fluffiest Cheesecake, feather light Chocolate Mousse and the most irresistible Chocolate Fountain in the city. 10 | Dining and Nightlife Abu Dhabi

In keeping with Caesars Palace Bluewaters Dubai’s Las Vegas legacy, the fun factor is turned up a notch with live entertainment. At brunch, things will take a decidedly British turn with a live indie band to get brunch guests off their seats, rocking out to the beats of Snow Patrol, Coldplay and Arctic Monkeys. Brunch would not be a true Hell’s Kitchen experience without the element of a competition. Diners can take part in the Hell’s Kitchen Hellicious Brunch competition known as “The Eton Mess Challenge” where guests can be budding chefs and plate up their own Eton Mess using various ingredients such as meringue, fresh strawberries, mixed berries and passion fruit. Running on a five-minute timer, one successful diner will be announced winner and awarded a dinner for two at Hell’s Kitchen. Hellicious Brunch is available every Friday from 12.30pm to 4.00pm. AED 350 per person inclusive of soft beverages. AED 450 per person inclusive of house beverages. AED 600 per person inclusive of premium package. Children below 4 years old dine for free and children between 4 to 12 years old dine for AED 150 per person. Inspired by the international hit television show and serving the same world-class cooking that made its Las Vegas counterpart a runaway success when it launched in January 2018, Hell’s Kitchen Dubai opened in December 2018 at Caesars Palace Bluewaters Dubai. Breakfast at Tiffany’s Aft

ternoon Tea

We are always on the lookout for a glamourous Afternoon Tea so when we learnt that Jumeirah at Etihad Towers’ award-winning Afternoon Tea had taken on a new shape, we were eager to learn more. Paying homage to the classic film Breakfast at Tiffany’s guests can now enjoy a Tiffany’s themed Afternoon Tea, transporting guests from Abu Dhabi to New York Today we will be enjoying our Afternoon Tea on the 74th floor at the Observation Deck at 300 which provides a 360-degree view of Abu Dhabi’s splendid skyline. The views are breathtaking, on a clear day guests can enjoy views of the city, the palace, the corniche and the ocean. Our table overlooks the palace, the best view in our opinion. As we take a seat, we are welcomed with a refreshing coconut infused beverage, Tiffany blue in colour. The tea selection is by TWG Tea, a luxury brand and one of the finest teas in the world. Guest can choose from white, green, black or blue tea. We opt for the traditional black tea, English Breakfast with cold soya milk on the side. We are very pleased that Jumeirah at Etihad Towers offers a milk alternative, unfortunately so many hotels in the city do not. The Afternoon Tea arrives and is presented into three tiers, the savouries which consist of Poached Quail Egg with Avocado, Radish, Cherry Tomato, Sunflower Seeds on Grilled Rye Baguette, Smoked Salmon with Apple Slaw and Caviar in Filo Pastry Cups, Slow Roasted Beef with Asparagus and Roquette on Corn Bread, Chicken Salad with Roasted Pears, Celery Mayonnaise, Cress in Rosemary Bread, alongside Cucumber and Cream Cheese Pinwheels and Quiche Lorraine. The pastries, mostly in Tiffany’s iconic blue are as follows, Butter Battenberg, Chocolate Choux Bun, Cappuccino Cream Cheese, Blueberry Vanilla Roulade, Macaroons, Coconut Bounty Doughnut, Mini Brownie Cup Cake and Almond Madeleine. The four scones are presented separately and come in two options Lemon and Cranberry Scones and Plain Scones, with clotted cream, jam and lemon curd. We thoroughly enjoyed the Smoked Salmon with Apple Slaw, Caviar in Filo Pastry Cups this was by far my favourite. The flaky pastry paired with the slight sweetness of the slaw and the saltiness of the caviar was perfection. The Quiche Lorraine was also divine again the pastry was well executed. If you have a sweet tooth you will relish the pastries, the Coconut Bounty Doughnut is light yet rich, the Butter Battenberg is a play on a classic, whilst the Cappuccino Cream Cheese will have you scooping up every last bite. Guest can also enjoy Afternoon Tea in Jumeirah at Etihad Towers Lobby Lounge for AED 220, however for an additional AED 30 (AED 250 in total) guest can enjoy the unique experience of Afternoon Tea on top of the world! We thoroughly enjoyed our Breakfast at Tiffany’s Afternoon Tea and we would highly recommend it, especially when you have visitors wanting to experience something unique, great views paired with great food. Afternoon Tea is served daily from 2.00pm to 6.00pm. Gluten free options are available on request and those with dietary requirements are asked to state so when booking, all bookings must be made 24-hours in advance. In The Hot Seat Tell us about your career and how you came to work in hospitality? I started my career in marketing 13 years ago in IT marketing, which is very different to hospitality marketing. After 6 years at IBM UK LTD, one of the world’s largest global blue-chip companies I decided to try something different and applied for job at a private family owned British hotel company called Edwardian Group London as an Email Marketing Executive and throughout my time there the role evolved, I eventually became their Food and Beverage Marketing Manager. In 2013 I turned 30 and decided something needed to change, so I packed a bag and moved to the Middle East. I moved to the Middle East to learn about luxury hospitality and boy did I begin to learn a lot! 5 years later, The St. Regis Abu Dhabi is my 3rd hotel in the Middle East and I have loved every minute of it.

Talk us through a typical day in the life of Sona Shah. What I love most about my job is that no 2 days are the same. A typical day starts with a morning meeting with all our heads of departments where we discuss any major events. We are a very close team at The St. Regis Abu Dhabi and collaboration is key, so this first meeting in the morning always sets the tone for the day. The rest of the day is usually filled with meetings with publications or the internal team. Planning is key so I always try and make sure that I set some time aside to do the “day job” as well. With so many activities going on at the hotel daily sometimes you don’t start the emails until 5.00pm or 6.00pm especially if the day is filled with events or photography.

How does working for The St. Regis compare to other brands you have previously worked for? Working for The St. Regis brand is like working for the Cartier or Louis Vuitton of hotels. I am really proud to work at such a prestigious brand which has become known for its impeccable service and iconic location. It’s certainly different to any of the other hotel brands I’ve worked at before and it’s always nice to be leading the team of a luxury product as it means our creativity can really be stretched and tested.

Director of Marketing, The St.Regis Abu Dhabi

Sona Shah Explain to our readers what it takes to become a respected Marketing professional.

I think the role of a marketing professional is one that constantly evolves. Just because you were good two years ago it doesn’t mean you are still good at what you do now. It’s With so many hotels opening across Abu Dhabi how important to keep up with the trends do you plan to remain competitive? and in most cases even be the one Since its opening 5 years ago The St. Regis Abu that leads the trends. With the pace of Dhabi has always had its own distinctive sense of digital tools evolving at such a rapid style and way of execution. I think its important to rate, it’s important to constantly look to understand that its not always about competition learn new things, also listen to guests, with your neighbours. To keep the demand within colleagues, management and owners the hospitality sector high, it’s important that our feedback and always seek new sister hotels and those close by are also successful. solutions and strategies, while paving It contributes to the success of the capital as a whole, the way and helping others to grow to. including tourist attractions such as Saadiyat Island and Yas Island. We do try hard to offer our guests unique experiences in the city and that is what has What’s the most successful marketing made us different from the competition. From our campaign you’ve ran to date and what Helipad Sunset Supper experience to our Brunch in made it so successful? the Clouds held in the Abu Dhabi Suite we believe I truly think it depends on how you these experiences are ones that create lasting define success. I’ve been a part of a lot memories and can only enhance the travel experience of great campaigns which have shown of a those visiting or wanting to explore Abu Dhabi. good revenue return and others which have not been successful in monetary terms but have been a great story and had great coverage and exposure for the brand. 16 | Dining and Nightlife Abu Dhabi

I truly believe that it’s important to define success for you and your team before you set out to plan the project. Of course, as a business the overall objective will always be to make a good return but sometimes you can’t put a price on a good story and activation especially if it goes viral. I think reputation is probably the most important and any activation or campaign that strengthens your reputation is a successful one.

What can we expect from The St. Regis Abu Dhabi in 2019? We just completed the great Red Bull Air Race Event last month and as the weather continues to improve into spring, we look forward to host a few more outdoor events at Nation Riviera Beach Club. Ramadan is fast approaching, we are excited to unveil our new look Ramadan concept in the next few weeks so there is plenty to look forward to in the first half of the year. At the end of 2019, The St. Regis Abu Dhabi is gearing up to launch the boldly reimagined Asia De Cuba, the fan-favourite restaurant that will debut a new look and sparkle.

As we make our way to The Warehouse, we walk through what seems a Mediterranean back street, a very authentic design. Onto the food, we order the Sizzling Prawns with togarashi mayo, scallions and sesame seeds, Spicy Tuna Poke Tacos with toasted sesame, soy ginger salad and red radish, Italian Burrata with warm crushed pomodoro and crostini alongside Stuffed Mushrooms Sliders with sundried tomato and feta, Battered Parmesan Fries with truffle mayo and the Mac and Cheese. The food is delicious and great for sharing, the Spicy Tuna Poke Tacos and the Mac and Cheese are our favourites. Ending the evening on a sweet note we opt for the Chocolate Fondue, milk chocolate served with marshmallows, fruits and biscuits. The next day, we are dining at Dino’s Bistro Italiano restaurant to try their family style brunch. Designed to resemble a classic Italian restaurant, the restaurant’s bustling atmosphere transforms it to a gastronomic playground for all to enjoy. The team are very welcoming, and we take our seat, ready to check out the menu.

We are given the family style brunch menu and asked to mark our choices on the menu, this is great as we can easily communicate to our waiter our dietary requirements which we couldn’t do at a buffet brunch. To begin Dino’s signature bread with dip, spreads and cheeses, the bread was fresh, the dip was tasty, and Dino’s offered a good variety of cheese. For starters we order the Calamari Fritti and the Buffalo Mozzarella and tomato salad, both are well done. From the pizza section the Margherita is our choice, a generous portion, we hold back knowing our mains are on the way. Moving onto the mains we enjoy the Ricotta and Spinach Stuffed Ravioli. All the food is served directly to the table ensuring it is fresh and piping hot. To conclude our experience, our desserts consists of a tray of small cakes served with a coffee. The Verdict Overall, Pearl Rotana Capital Centre provided a perfect weekend staycation. The hotel is great for guests wanting to check-in and enjoy a relaxing stay be it for work or leisure. The Club Rotana Lounge is excellent, and we would recommend it even if you are travelling for leisure, the private check-in and exclusive lounge add to the sense of relaxation. Bodylines Fitness and Wellness Club has everything you require for recreational purposes from a gym to treatment rooms, plus the rooftop pool is perfect for an evening dip. If you are not looking for a getaway we would recommend you do check-out the selection of dining options at Pearl Rotana be it for a family dinner at Dino’s or a night out with friends at The Warehouse. The Retreat

Located at The Westin Abu Dhabi Golf Resort and Spa, The Retreat is a favourite amongst residents. Famed for its Fish and Chips, The Retreat offers traditional pub grub as well as a great venue to enjoy live coverage of international sports events, with three large LED screens placed around the bar. Today we are visiting The Retreat for lunch, we take a seat outdoors on the spanning terrace which overlooks the golf course. The weather is perfect, so we want to make the most of it before the summer heat arrives. The menu serves an array of modern dishes, from quick snacks and salads to hearty mains and tasty desserts. We decide to order a range of dishes to share, we opt for the Messy Nachos with melted jack cheese, jalapeno, guacamole, sour cream, pico de gallo, the famed Battered Fish and Chips with mushy peas, gribiche sauce and malt vinegar, alongside the Spiced Calamari Crackers with black pepper aioli and lime and from the salad menu we order the Crusted Blue Cheese and Jalapeno, green leaves, celery, cherry tomato, cranberry, cilantro, honey and mustard dressing. All the dishes arrive at once, as requested and are piping hot. The portions are enormous and can easily be shared by two people. The Messy Nachos, true to its name, does get a bit messy, the mountain of warm crisp nachos has been topped with layers of gooey melted jack cheese. The Fish and Chips, our favourite dish of the day, is a taste of home. The fish is perfectly battered with the batter remaining crisp to the bite yet the fish flaking off the fork. Credit to the chef the mushy peas are done perfectly, and the thick cut fries also get the thumbs up from the team.

The Spiced Calamari Crackers provide a spicy kick and are not for the faint hearted but if you like your food spicy this is a must try. Our final dish, the Crusted Blue Cheese and Jalapeno, at first, we were a bit hesitant to order this dish as sometimes blue cheese can be slightly overpowering. However, chef does well to coat the cheese just to the right amount, ensuring that you still get the essence of the blue cheese without the overstated flavours. The desserts range from Apple Pie, Deconstructed Snickers, and an Ice Cream Trolley. Although they are extremely tempting the portions of our dishes are that large that we don’t even manage to finish them so sadly on this occasion we have to pass on the dessert. Overall if you are looking for a relaxed place to enjoy the sport, grab a casual bite to eat or just relax with a bevvy The Retreat is a firm favourite. We would recommend this venue for men or couples wanting to go out for a few drinks over some casual food, be it in the week or over the weekend. Worth noting that The Retreat gets very busy during match days so arrive early if you want a good seat. Café 302

Located within Al Maha Arjaan by Rotana, Café 302 offers diners a selection of wholesome dishes, great breakfast options, a vegan menu and sweet treats. The décor is trendy yet comfortable and features grey like tones. The cosy space is ideal to sit down and talk with friends, hold short meetings or just catch up on a few emails. As well as an extensive main menu Café 302 caters for vegetarians and now vegans with the introduction of their vegan menu. Today I will be trying a few dishes from their vegan menu, whilst my dining companion revisits their main menu. From the vegan menu I order the Spinach and Kale Salad, dates, cashews and pomegranate dressing, alongside a Cold Mezza of olives, dips and spreads, hummus, tabbouleh, moutabel, picked vegetables and crisp flatbread.

The Burrata is thick and creamy, the tomatoes and sea salt help break down the rich flavour of the cheese. The Grilled Tuna Melt is nothing fancy but a great choice, the portion is large and comes with a side of French fries. Both dishes are well presented, however the Burrata tastes phenomenal. The vegan menu features a range of tasty dishes for those sometimes less catered for in the city. Vegan diners can enjoy dishes from Lentil Soup, Roasted Butternut Squash Salad and more. The main menu is extensive, guests can enjoy breakfast from 6.00am to 2.00pm with dishes ranging from Vegetarian Eggs Benedict, Belgian Waffles, to Healthy Oats. Later in the day guests are welcome to tuck into classics from Asian Beef Noodle Salad, The Café Burger, Pizzas, Spiced Butter Chicken, Pan-Seared Atlantic Salmon and Pasta.

Be sure to leave room for a few sweet temptations, apart from the baked goods at the counter guests can enjoy, Red Velvet Cake, Some of you will recognise the Spinach and Kale Salad from the main Potted Banana Creamed Pie, and Date and Toffee Pudding to name a few. menu, this is one of the most ordered dishes at Café 302, we are pleased to see that they have adapted it for their vegan guests. The salad tastes just as great as the main menu version, the only item that Café 302 extensive menus and welcoming ambiance is an award-winning combination but now with the team extending the has been removed is the feta cheese. The Cold Mezza is delightful, and the portion can easily be shared between two people. menu to cater for vegetarian and vegan diners, this café is set to attract an even larger crowd. Café 302 offers a casual, relaxed dining From the main menu my dining companion orders the Burrata Cheese spot, be it for breakfast, lunch or dinner. As unpretentious as it is, with sea salt and extra virgin olive oil, heirloom tomatoes, salsa verde guests can still expect five-star service, our waitress was very cheerful and welcoming. and rocca, alongside the Grilled Tuna Melt, olive, capers, red onion, and swiss cheese on whole wheat bread. Benefits of Coconut Oil It may sound obvious but not everyone knows, Coconut Oil comes from the flesh of the coconut and is a true superfood! Coconut Oil can easily be found in supermarkets across the UAE, my personal favourite is Waitrose Organic Virgin Cold Pressed Coconut Oil. I like this brand for a few reasons, it comes in a tub, allowing me to easily scope as much as I need and its organic cold pressed, meaning the Coconut Oil hasn’t been chemically extracted. 1. Cooking I first started to use Coconut Oil for cooking when I was looking to make healthier lifestyle choices. About two thirds of Coconut Oil is composed of medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs), while other common seed and vegetables oils are made up of long-chain fatty acids (LCFAs). Coconut Oil is the richest natural source of MCFAs. MCFAs are better utilized by the body, easily digested and more readily transformed into energy rather than accumulating as fat they help boost your metabolism. 2. Hair Care Let’s face it we’ve all been left with dull lifeless hair at one point in our lives, well if you don’t want to splash out on expensive treatments at the salon Coconut Oil can offer a much cheaper and more organic solution. Use Coconut Oil as a natural way to help your hair grow longer, thicker and faster whilst staying nice and shiny. The vitamins and essential fatty acids found in Coconut Oil help nourish the scalp and even reduce dandruff. 3. Weight Loss When it comes to superfoods that can help you lose weight, Coconut Oil is by far one of the best. It contains a unique combination of fatty acids which has a powerful effect on your metabolism. Several studies show that just by adding Coconut Oil to your diet, you can lose fat, especially the in the abdominal area. Coconut Oil has the added benefit of reducing hunger and cravings, it’s easy to see how it can help you lose weight faster. 4. Immunity Coconut Oil added to an otherwise relatively healthy diet can serve to dramatically boost one’s immune system. Coconut Oil is a powerful anti-viral agent. If you’re looking to boost your immunity naturally, simply use a teaspoon of Coconut Oil a day. While some proponents advise going with multiple tablespoons, coconut’s anti-viral effects can be quite strong unless you’re used to them. However, it’s worth mentioning some people experience the ‘die off effect’, unpleasant symptoms like headaches, fatigue, muscle pain, as bacteria starts to die off in the body with the use of Coconut Oil. 30 | Dining and Nightlife Abu Dhabi

5. Dental Care Calcium is a vital component of our teeth. Since Coconut Oil facilitates the absorption of calcium by the body, it helps in developing strong teeth. It also stops tooth decay. Recent research suggests that it is also beneficial in reducing plaque formation and plaque-induced gingivitis. Rinsing your mouth with Coconut Oil three times a week has been proven to lift bacteria and greatly reduce the risk of disease around your gums. Also, some studies have shown that Coconut Oil also helps improve the whiteness of teeth. 6. Speeds Up Healing Coconut Oil is one of the most widely used natural remedy for treating burns due to its amazing skin healing properties. It not only speeds up the healing process and prevents secondary infections but also moisturizes the skin and reduces the scars or marks on the skin caused by burns. Always remember that Coconut Oil is recommended to treat only first-degree burns. Coconut Oil is most effective on bruises as it speeds up the healing process by repairing damaged tissues. 7. Stress Relief New research suggests that it may have anti-stress and antioxidant properties. You can also use it as a massage oil, which will definitely help with stress reduction too! 8. Moisturizer It acts as an effective moisturizer on all types of skins. Coconut Oil is a safe solution for preventing dryness and skin flaking and boosts skin’s hydration. Many have also found it helps to reduce the appearance of stretch marks whilst also protecting us from UV radiation Coconut Oil addresses various skin problems including psoriasis, dermatitis, eczema and other skin infections. 9. Energy Levels The medium chain fatty acids of Coconut Oil do not need to be broken down in the small intestine. They get absorbed intact and go straight to the liver from the digestive tract where they are in turn used as an instant source of energy. 10. Improve Acne Now, it may seem counterintuitive to rub an oil all over your face when you have acne, however, the lauric acid in Coconut Oil comes to the rescue again. Coconut Oil can help inflammation and redness related to acne. We hope that you have found this article useful however we do recommend that you always seek professional medical advice before making changes to your diet or lifestyle.

Vegan Mac and Cheese Prep Time: 10 mins

Cook Time: 10 mins

Ingredients • 3 cups dried macaroni • 1 cup peeled/diced yellow potatoes • 1/4 cup peeled/diced carrots • 1/3 cup chopped onion • 3/4 cup water reused from boiled vegetables • 1/2 cup raw cashews • 1/4 cup coconut milk • 2 tablespoons nutritional yeast flakes • 1 tablespoon lemon juice • 3/4 to 1 teaspoon salt • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder • 1 pinch cayenne pepper (optional) • 1 pinch paprika

Method Boil macaroni for approximately 6 to 8 minutes in salted water then drain and set aside. Take a small pot and bring the water to a boil, add the chopped potatoes, carrots, and onion into the boiling water, and cook until vegetables are tender and soft enough to blend. Place the vegetables into the blender. Add 3/4 cup of the same water in which you boiled your vegetables along with your remaining ingredients, including cashews. Blend until smooth. If your blender is not high-powered soak your cashews for 30 minutes beforehand. Pour sauce over your cooked macaroni, add a dash of salt and serve immediately. Enjoy!

Dai Pai Dong

34 | Dining and Nightlife Abu Dhabi

It has been about three years since we dined at Dai Pai Dong, many of you may remember our less than favourable review. However, with a new team now in place we decided it was time to return. Nestled where Rosewood Abu Dhabi meets The Galleria, Dai Pai Dong is represented by a smoky Dragon and Phoenix. This authentic Chinese restaurant celebrates honest Cantonese cuisine. We arrive and are welcomed by the team and guided to our table. Inspired by the street food movement, the menu showcases modern interpretations of classic Chinese dishes. We are seated in one of the booths facing the kitchen, these are the best seats in the house and when booking, we would highly recommend you reserve one of these. The restaurant is nicely decorated with dark interiors, Chinese guardian lions and a live show kitchen. Be sure to check out the hidden bar, and yes, it’s as cool as it sounds. We begin with two sets of dumplings, first the Four XI Vegetable Dumpling with tofu and winter squash followed by the Truffle Vegetable Dumplings, both are excellently presented and taste wonderful. Next the Crushed Cucumber in garlic and black vinegar, Wok-Fried Asparagus in water chestnut and gingko nuts, Braised Eggplant with ginger, garlic and preserved chili sauce, Chinese Vegetables in oyster sauce, Tofu Lettuce Wraps and Egg Fried Rice. Credit to Chef and his team, they have taken simple ingredients and made them taste fantastic. My personal favourite is the Braised Eggplant this dish offers a multitude of textures and flavours. To conclude our dining experience, we enjoy a range of desserts from the Spiced Apple Spring Rolls, crispy taro, vanilla sauce, Fried Black Sesame Balls with coconut ice cream to the Hong Kong Egg Tarts. Don’t be put off by the thought of the Hong Kong Egg Tarts, this sweet tasting dessert is not to be missed. The service is magnificent and a vast improvement from a few years ago, our waitress is friendly and informative, she explains every dish in detail and the moment our glass is empty she is on hand to offer us another beverage. Given that the restaurant is rather busy this evening the quality service remains consistent throughout the evening. Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our dining experience at Dai Pai Dong and will be back soon. If you are looking to savour Chinese delicacies such as homemade noodles and dim sum, as well as barbecued meats in a stunning setting complete with Chinese artwork and a live show kitchen and a stylish speakeasy bar we would recommend Dai Pai Dong. Ladies Vegan Night

36 | Dining and Nightlife Abu Dhabi

Veganism has been on the rise for the last two years so it should be no surprise that restaurants are now starting to pay attention to this rising trend. Pachaylen, the famed Thai restaurant at Anantara Eastern Mangroves has recently introduced its Ladies Vegan Night. Although we are not vegan ourselves the menu looks so tempting, we cannot resist checking it out. As we enter Pachaylen we are welcomed by the sounds of the khim and shown to our table. To begin our dining experience, we are presented with Miang Kham, a traditional thai starter translating to ‘one bite wrap’. Small leaves are filled with salad bites ranging from peanuts, onions, lime, chili and ginger then consumed in one bite. Guests can choose one starter from a choice of Som Tum Thai, a spicy green papaya salad with soy lime and tamarind juice dressing, Chor Pha Kra Puok, steamed rice dumplings with taro and vegetable soya sauce or Tom Yam Prak Ruam, spicy vegetable soup with chilli galangal and lemongrass. We sample a small portion of each, our favourite is the Som Tum Thai, the rich flavours offer a delightful juxtaposition of sour and spicy. Moving onto the mains guests can choose either the Phad To-Hu Khing Onn, wok fried tofu bean curd with young ginger, mushroom and soya bean paste or the To-Hu Phad Bai Kra Paow, wok fried tofu bean curd with bamboo, basil chili and black soy sauce. Both come with a side of Phad Prak Choy Tao Jeiw, choy with Thai soy bean paste and Khao Soey, steamed jasmine rice. The Phad To-Hu Khing Onn is our preferred dish, it offers a lot more flavour than the other tofu dish which, as nice as it was didn’t quite tickle our taste buds. Finally, onto dessert, Tab Tim Krob, water chestnut tapioca flour dumpling in coconut milk syrup. This was the first time we had tried this dessert, but it will not be the last. Asian cuisine is seldomly known for its great desserts but if you have a sweet tooth, we would highly recommend trying the Tab Tim Krob. Overall my dining companion and I thoroughly enjoyed our Ladies Vegan Night, even though neither of us are vegan, the dishes were executed so well and tasted so good that it didn’t make the slightest bit of difference to our dining experience. For those who are vegan, circle your calendars for Ladies Vegan Night will be taking place every Tuesday from 7.00pm to 11.00pm with an attractive price tag of AED 130 per person, generous amounts of delectable dishes and a great atmosphere, what’s not to like? Worth noting is that although the night is officially called Ladies Vegan Night it’s not the type of ladies night that may spring to mind, this is a more refined evening focused around great food, men are also welcome to enjoy, making it ideal for a relaxing couples night out.
