Alici

12 | Dining and Nightlife Middle East

Alici, the Italian seafood restaurant inspired by the Amalfi Coast could not be better suited to the rapidly developing Bluewaters Island off the coast of JBR. The licensed restaurant comes to us from the team behind the successful Il Borro Tuscan Bistro and offers diners similar touchpoints - appealing interiors, strong service and simple Italian fare with a focus on quality ingredients. From the moment you pass through the cream colored door and into the warm and welcoming interior, Alici (meaning anchovies in Italian), feels like a home away from home. As if a traditional Italian trattoria has been picked up and dropped upon the Dubai coastline. The space is awash with bright tones and billowing textiles, punctuated by artworks featuring fish (this is a seafood restaurant after all) upon the whitewashed walls. Downstairs is the dining room, with its raw bar, here guests can watch chefs slicing all manner of seafood with the utmost precision. We’d suggest grabbing a seat upstairs, home to a well-stocked bar of over 250 varieties of grape and floor to ceiling windows that bathe the space in an almost ethereal glow. Better still, head to the terrace for waterfront views, which whilst may not be the Amalfi coastline, the skyline of Dubai Marina makes for a worthy substitute. Alici describes their cuisine as ‘seafood the Italian way.’ Meaning diners can expect traditional fish dishes prepared in a simple and authentic Italian style. Having been enraptured June | 13

14 | Dining and Nightlife Middle East

by the raw bar we couldn’t resist ordering both the Ricciola and Tonno, even though we were tempted by the selection of oysters and caviar available. The Ricciola, showcases thin slithers of amberjack served with a lemon dressing and is a definite highlight of the Alici dining experience, thanks to the inclusion of apple and pomegranate which brings a balance of acidity and sweetness to the dish. The Tonno, a seared blue fin tuna, presents thicker pieces of fish with Romano pepper and a spicy dressing that is robust without overpowering the delicate nature of the fish. Our attentive waiter persuades us to try both the Burrata and Alici Pizza which we cannot resist given it holds the name of the restaurant. The Burrata is expectedly excellent, served with little embellishment other than chunky heirloom tomatoes and a sprinkling of basil oil. This allows the creamy Italian cheese to stand front and center. Perhaps not the biggest fans of anchovies the Alici Pizza transpires to be excellent. Presenting a thin and crisp base that’s exceptionally light and topped with burrata, elongated Datterino tomatoes, rocket and the anchovies. Bringing a nice saltiness to the fresh ingredients. Though too full to indulge in the main courses that include seared hand dived scallops, grilled langoustine, and Wagyu tagliata. We opt for the unique pasta choice of Spaghetti Alla ‘Chitarra’ Con Ricci E Riceiola. Handmade spaghetti with sea urchin and amberjack which may be a divisive dish thanks to the sea urchin component but is one we truly appreciated and would certainly order again. For dessert, we select three! The Torta Al Formaggio arrives first and is a light and zesty lemon cheesecake served upon a bed of vanilla soil and crafted to look like an actual lemon picked fresh from one of the citrus trees that dot the dining room. A visual sensation is matched in taste and accounts for one of

the prettiest dishes we’ve seen for some time. The more traditional choices of Tiramisu and Cannoli don’t disappoint either, with the Tiramisu bringing an unexpected depth to the cream which is further enhanced by the espresso-soaked ladyfingers that aren’t overly sweet. The trio of Cannoli stuffed with pistachio, chocolate and orange are crisp and play well with textures, reiterating that simplicity is the key to the Alici dining experience. Pricing is undeniably competitive and offers exceptional value for money considering the quality of the experience. If we had one niggle it would be that despite the genuine warmth of the staff who hail from all over Italy and exude that charm and hospitality one would expect, we did find the service style to be a touch intense at times. A common trait of newly opened establishments that is easily rectified. Despite its obvious culinary strengths under the guidance of Head Chef Domenico Santagada, Alici represents more than just good food. Sustainability sits at the forefront of the restaurant’s ethos with fresh catches of Italian and local sustainably sourced seafood making up the Amalfitana and Southern Italian specialties upon a menu. These are set to change dependent on the season and sea availability. Ricciola, AED 65 Tonno, AED 60 Burrata, AED 85 Alici Pizza, AED 80 Spaghetti Alla ‘Chitarra’ Con Ricci E Riceiola, AED 105 Torta Al Formaggio, AED 50 Tiramisu, AED 45 Cannoli, AED 45 Alici, Bluewaters Island, Dubai, +971 4 275 2577 June | 15

ening Brunch

June | 17

Having already established itself as a firm favourite amongst residents in Abu Dhabi, Si Ristorante Italiano and Bar at Saadiyat Rotana Resort and Villas has introduced its very own La Tavolata Evening Brunch. Taking place every Thursday, La Tavolata Evening Brunch offers residents the ideal setting to see in the weekend with family and friends. As we enter the restaurant, we receive a warm Italian welcome and are shown to our table, a cosy booth perched on a slightly elevated section of the restaurant. Tonight’s evening brunch is served buffet style, we waste no time in taking our plates and browsing the offerings. We start with a classic Minestrone Soup, the thick soup is bursting with flavour, a great start to our La Tavolata Evening Brunch experience. Moving onto the salad offerings we select the Insalata Di Mare, Beef Carpaccio, Tuna Carpaccio, Caprese and the Bresaola Salad. All are enjoyable but the Insalata Di Mare is our favourite, fresh rich seafood offers fork after fork of light and flavourful bites. Unable to resists the smell of freshly baked pizza we make our way to the pizza oven, chef is on-hand to create a pizza of our choice. Feeling slightly unadventurous this evening we opt for a simple Margherita Pizza. This arrives to the table piping hot. Worth mentioning is the service, even though the restaurant is full the team do extremely well to ensure no guest is made to feel neglected and pass by all the tables frequently ensuring everyone is having a more than pleasant dining experience. Be sure not to miss the pasta, the serving team make their way around the restaurant at various intervals with a variety of fresh pasta to choose from. When a member of our party asks for a vegetarian pasta option the team kindly oblige.

18 | Dining and Nightlife Middle East

There are many pasta options being passed around so if you do have any dietary requirements be sure to inform the team. Alongside all the Italian fare, Si does well to cater for all of its guests with dishes like Beef Wellington and King Fish, ensuring that those guests who may not want to indulge in traditional Italian dishes still leave feeling satisfied. One of the main highlights of La Tavolata Evening Brunch is the outdoor BBQ, guests can choose from a decent selection of proteins which are grilled to perfection. Guests are spoilt for choice with the range of delectable Italian cheeses the Losa Di Vacca and the Caperino offer contrasting flavours but make for a fine ending. Our only criticism is the selection of desserts, although Si’s delicious Tiramisu is avaiable, we would have liked to have seen a range of more authentic Italian desserts such as cannoli or torta della nonna instead of lychee jelly crumble which seems slightly out of place. If you are looking for a great way to start the weekend be sure to check out La Tavolata Evening Brunch every Thursday at Si Ristorante Italiano and Bar at Saadiyat Rotana Resort and Villas. La Tavolata Evening Brunch every Thursday 6.30pm to 10.30pm. Packages start at AED 275 soft package, AED 325 house package and AED 425 premium package. Sir Bani Y

Yas Island

June | 21

Overview

Room

Sir Bani Yas Island features a wildlife sanctuary and three types of accommodation all managed by Anantara. Located just off the coast of Abu Dhabi, Sir Bani Yas Island was founded by His Highness Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. Home to free-roaming animals, including the near extinct Arabian Oryx. The island offers a distinct opportunity to reconnect with nature and gain an understanding of the conservation efforts on Sir Bani Yas Island.

For our visit we are staying at Al Yamm Resort which has been designed to reminisce an Emirati fishing village. The resort is split into two parts, on one side guests can enjoy spanning views of the mangroves and on the other endless beach and ocean views. Our One Bedroom Pool Villa is located on the beach, placing us just steps away from the ocean.

Sir Bani Yas Island offers three very different types of accommodation. Guests are invited to experience an iconic fortress-style hotel at Desert Island Resort, overlooking the Arabian Gulf. Embrace a night in the bush at one of the rustic lodges at Al Sahel, located in the heart of the island or overlook the mangroves and white-sandy beaches at the private villas at Al Yamm Resort. Traveling to Sir Bani Yas Island from Abu Dhabi takes approximately 2.5 hours’ drive to the port. Once you arrive you will be able to leave your car in a complimentary covered carpark before enjoying the welcome centre and finally departing on the water taxi for a short 15-minute journey to Sir Bani Yas Island. Alternatively, flights are available to Sir Bani Yas Island from Abu Dhabi and Dubai.

22 | Dining and Nightlife Middle East

The Pool Villa offers a large bathroom with a freestanding tub, a walk-in rain shower with Anantara spa amenities, a separate restroom, a large double bed, TV, coffee and tea making facilities, complimentary WiFi, a working desk and double doors that open up onto an expansive terrace with a private plunge pool, chairs, tables and sun loungers for guests to relax. The dĂŠcor is bright and colourful, giving the room a Mediterranean theme. We really enjoy the outdoor plunge pool, its perfectly designed to allow guests to relax and watch the waves or if you are lucky enough catch a glimpse of the gazelles. Even though you may choose to stay at Al Yamm, guests can also enjoy access to the facilities of the sister resorts, Desert Islands and Al Sahel. A shuttle bus service is available at given times of the day.

24 | Dining and Nightlife Middle East

Nature and Wildlife Drive Sir Bani Yas Island is dominated by the Arabian Wildlife Park, with its roaming giraffes, cheetahs and gazelles. The island also boasts multiple archaeological sites across the island including the ruins of an ancient Christian monastery. Salt dome hills define the island’s desert interior whilst the coast features beaches, sea kayak routes and a shipwreck. This afternoon we are very excited to be experiencing the Nature and Wildlife Drive. We are picked up in the reception area by our tour guide. We then enter the safari truck and begin our tour. The guide is exceptional and answers all our questions regarding the wildlife. Whilst on our tour we are fortunate enough to encounter the cheetahs and a giraffe. Our guide informs us about the progress that has been made in raising the population of the Arabian Oryx. Its interesting to learn that for the wildlife to flourish they first had to create an entire eco system on the island. We would highly recommend the Nature and Wildlife Drive when visiting Sir Bani Yas Island.

Dining Our favourite restaurant, Olio, the Italian restaurant located on Al Yamm. During the day Olio doubles up as our breakfast and lunch venue but during the evening is the best time to visit.

The menu is slightly larger than what is available during the day and the outdoor terrace offers you a clean star lit sky with crashing ocean waves as the backdrop. This evening we are dining at Olio. We first begin with the Bruschetta, toasted bread, freshly chopped tomatoes, olive and basil, simple but excellently done. We also order the Caprese salad, buffalo mozzarella, tomatoes and basil pesto, the Caprese itself is enjoyable however we find the basil pesto a little to overbearing. For the mains we stick to classic Italian dishes, a Margherita pizza and the Penne Alla Arrabbiata, again both are thoroughly enjoyable. The service is friendly and genuine and throughout our evening our waiter ensures that we are enjoying a pleasant evening.

The Verdict Sir Bani Yas Island offered a unique experience, the Pool Villas offer an escape from the hustle and bustle of the city, located a stones throw from the shoreline you’d be hard pressed not to find this place relaxing. Whilst the Wildlife Drive gave us the opportunity to see the conservation efforts on the island. Sir Bani Yas Island, Abu Dhabi, UAE, +971 2 801 4200

Puerto 99

26 | Dining and Nightlife Middle East

Bluewaters Island is rapidly becoming Dubai’s must-see lifestyle destination following the opening of the magnificent Caesars Palace Hotel and the pending arrival of Ain Dubai - the world’s largest ferris wheel - currently on track to begin rotating in summer 2020. Beneath the shadow of the 210-meter-tall fairground attraction lies a restaurant and retail complex that is defying expectations with its eclectic selection of licensed food and beverage concepts. The latest to open is Puerto 99, a split-level venue focusing on modern Mexican cuisine. First impressions are good as we enter into a warm and inviting space exemplified via high ceilings, Mexican textiles and sculpted jaguars. Greeted by a chirpy ‘Ola’ from the hostess, we are led up a narrow stairway past fluorescent portraits of Frida Kahlo and Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, to the restaurants second floor. Where a quaint al fresco terrace lies, overlooking the Arabian Gulf and the beach at JBR. Ditching the vibrant color scheme of the Mexican cantina in favor of earthen tones and an abundance of entwined rope, Puerto 99 resembles a modern hacienda replete with cultural trinkets. Each design element, including the colorful napkin rings, lava stone cups and woven light fittings have been hand-crafted by Mexican artists and transported to the UAE. Adding a layer of authenticity to the restaurant. The food at Puerto 99 also exemplifies traditionalism with ingredients

sourced from 19 of Mexico’s states to ensure a diverse flavor profile and originality to the dishes. With a menu divided into various sections (botanas, raw bar, tacos, Mezquite and large plates) diners should feel compelled to order one or two dishes from each to fully appreciate the sharing concept the restaurant promotes. As a staple of Mexican cuisine, the Guacamole provides a means to gauge the quality of the restaurant and although we missed the table-side theatrics of similar establishments, the creamy mixture made with Mexican Haas Avocados and adorned with pomegranate seeds is a great start. Though the portion is admittedly more than enough for 4 people, we would’ve preferred a little more heat. An iPad showcases attractive imagery and makes menu navigation simple, especially considering many of the dishes are unfamiliar to us. The cuisine is not the usual Tex-Mex so don’t expect burritos and nachos, instead guests can enjoy ceviche, tacos and an emphasis on seafood and steaks. While ceviches have long been the focus of Peruvian cuisine, the dish of raw fish cured in citrus is a staple of many Latin American countries including Mexico and at Puerto 99 several options are offered. We really appreciate the ability to select a small or large portion for our mixed ceviche which consists of combined octopus, shrimp and red snapper, with tomatoes, onion and sea salt. The resulting dish is bold and fresh, with the lime providing acidity and balance to the seafood component.

June | 27

28 | Dining and Nightlife Middle East

We would suggest that the tacos are where Puerto 99’s real strength lies, and seven fillings are available including grilled lobster, battered shrimp and stewed lamb. Things would be amiss if you didn’t order one (or two). The crispy Pescadillas fill two crisp taco shells to the point of expulsion with freshly caught fish, Epazote and chopped pico de gallo salsa. Yet it’s the Tacos De Tuetano that really appealed, despite the somewhat obscure focal ingredient. Presenting two soft shell tacos stuffed with shredded short rib, alongside a bone cut lengthways. The exposed marrow needs to be scraped and then spread amongst caramelized onions and serrano chilli sat upon the light tortillas. Adding a robust flavor and slightly gelatinous texture to what has to be Puerto 99’s standout dish. Admittedly the Volcanes De Carnitas De Atun was a minor misstep for us. For the roasted tuna lacked the flavors we had come to expected but things are quickly redeemed with the coconut shrimp. Butterflied shrimp, deep fried and served upon a bed of sweet rice and drizzled with a buttery coconut sauce. Simple but effective, the dish makes for a nice alternative to the abundance of steaks on offer. Saving room for dessert we cannot resist the warm Mexican Churros which are generously dusted with sugar and arrive with a choice of three sauces - chocolate, raspberry and caramel - just perfect for dipping. The Churros are delightfully crunchy and boast a crisp golden dough that despite being deep-fried, shows no signs of oil retention. We also gravitate towards the Mole Spiced Lava Cake that oozes a spiced chocolate sauce when pierced and thus concludes our meal with some added Latin flare.

A small bar makes for the ideal spot for a pre or post dinner drink and the mixed beverages which have been carefully crafted by in-house mixologist, Borja Doblado are truly impressive. Encapsulating bursts of flame, a juxtaposition in flavors and striking glassware. One quick glance at the restaurants Instagram account is enough to have you ordering the Sweet Roots or Popcorn Julep. As Puerto 99 transcends from day to night, the venue truly comes alive with projections upon plates creating a dining experience filled with illusions and a live Mariachi band that ensures the venue is at full capacity on weekend evenings. Yet it’s Puerto 99’s focus on traditional Mexican dishes that take in the breath of the country from the Yucatan Peninsula to Chihuahua. While Greek food is currently dominating Dubai’s dining landscape. Puerto 99 has the potential to mark a similar turning point for Mexican cuisine by refining traditional street food and transporting it into a contemporary environment. Hispanic influences derive from more than just the cuisine and decor with the majority of the staff hailing from Mexico. This entrenched authenticity to the restaurant allows Puerto 99 to fill the void left by the now shuttered Peyote in DIFC. Guacamole, AED 75 Pescadillas, AED 50 Tacos De Tuetano, AED 80 Volcanes De Carnitas De Atun, AED 80 Mexican Churros, AED 55 Mole Spiced Lava Cake, AED 50 Puerto 99, Bluewaters Island, Dubai, +971 4 557 6627 June | 29

Indya by Vineet

30 | Dining and Nightlife Middle East

Michelin Star Chef Vineet’s energy and persistence to give Indian cuisine a grand platform has never teetered over the years and as a result earned him a reputation for putting Indian cuisine on the map, in the Middle East and beyond. The decorated chef, who counts restaurant residencies in London, Geneva, Bahrain, Mauritius, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Mumbai, is no stranger to Dubai, having acclaimed multiple awards for his first UAE venture, Indego by Vineet at Dubai’s Grosvenor House Hotel. Tonight, we are dining at Indya by Vineet located at Le Royal Meridien Beach Resort and Spa Dubai, Indya launched earlier this year. Inspired by a young and vibrant India, Indya moves away from fine dining, offering plates designed for sharing in a fun and relaxed atmosphere. We begin by ordering Raj Puri Chaat from the Chaat Trolley alongside the Crisp Onion-Beet Bhajias with Herb Chutney from the Earth Menu. True to its concept the food arrives within minutes of ordering. First, we begin with the Raj Puri Chaat, larger than the puri you may be accustomed to you will need your cutlery for this one or be prepared to go all in and

get messy. Within seconds of our first bite our mouth feels like it’s going to burst with flavors, first the rich creamy texture followed by the crunch of the Chaat, brilliant. The Crisp Onion-Beet Bhajias with Herb Chutney is another fantastic dish. Each bite offers a richness of flavors and the Herb Chutney balances out the sharpness of the onion in a balancing act of perfection. Bitesize yumminess you can expect a lot of crunch followed by a lot of mmm… Our next destination takes us to the Sea as we select the Banana Leaf Koli Fish with Cucumber Raita as well as the Prawn Chilli on a bed of Cured Rice and Aunty Braganza’s Prawn Stew. Unable to resist the naan bread we select one Garlic Naan and one Butter Naan. As we unveil the Koli Fish that has been delicately wrapped in Banana Leaf a myriad of aroma is released. The fish perfectly flakes off our fork and the depth of flavors are divine. The Prawn Chilli on a bed of Cured Rice offers the palate a spicy treat however it’s Aunty Braganza’s Prawn Stew that is my favorite dish at Indya by Vineet. This dish has it all, fresh flavors, big tasty delectable prawns and when paired with Garlic Naan it makes the perfect comfort food. June | 31

32 | Dining and Nightlife Middle East

Indya by Vineet is a fresh new concept that will tantalize senses, lure taste buds and challenge perceptions of India as we know it. Indya by Vineet serves up elevated versions of Indian cuisine in signature Chef Vineet style. Indya employs colloquial cooking techniques in a menu arranged by the sourcing of ingredients, tapping into the elements - from the earth, from the land, from the sea and from the Halwai - making the typical starter, main and dessert format redundant. The vibrant dining area is balanced by the rattan chairs and stone-bricked walls, with The Omnipresent Ganesha, the deity icon from Vineet’s birth town of Mumbai, serving as a focal design accent and reiteration of the restaurants’ vibrant Indian roots. Indya by Vineet proudly offers diners a unique approach to Indian cuisine, taking traditional Indian flavors and spices and giving them a deliciously modern twist.

Our experience at Indya by Vineet was fantastic, from the service which may I add was exceptional to the food. The price is extremely reasonable with most dishes ranging around AED 65. Portions are generous so our advice would be order lots, share and try as many dishes as possible. We highly recommend a visit to Indya by Vineet located at Le Royal Meridien Beach Resort and Spa Dubai for a sensational experience of exceptional Indian cuisine with a moderate price point. For tonight’s dining experience we are venturing to Shangri-La Hotel, Qaryat Al Beri Abu Dhabi to dine at Shang Palace. Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts signature restaurant, Shang Palace takes guests on an unprecedented voyage through authentic Cantonese cuisine. Having impressed diners from across the globe its sister restaurant in Hong Kong currently holds one Michelin Star. The menu at Shang Palace is that of an authentic Cantonese restaurant and features traditional dishes from dim sum to exquisite Beijing duck. We walk through the large wooden doors and enter Shang Palace. The restaurants dÊcor features classic touches, red hanging lanterns, small picture frames featuring Chinese art and dark wooden walls adding a sense of timeless elegance. The staff are dressed in graceful traditional silk embellished dresses, further complimenting the authenticity of Shang Palace. Shang Palace offers indoor and outdoor seating, weather permitting we would highly recommend the cozy outdoor terrace which boasts breathtaking views of Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque.

Moving onto our dining experience. We begin with the Deep-Fried Soft-Shell Crab with Curry Leaf and Chili. Crisp to the bite the tantalizing flavors of the curry leaf paired with the chili makes this dish extremely moreish. The presentation of the dish is creative, a basket made from dry noodles holds the crab in representation of a fishing basket having caught the catch of the day. As we embark onto the next dish, the Crispy Tiger Prawns with Wasabi Sauce, Fresh Fruits, Tobiko Fish Roe, we are eager to see how the culinary team will present this popular yet commonly found dish. The team does not disappoint, four enormously large plum Crispy Tiger Prawns are placed before us the Wasabi Sauce, Fresh Fruits and Tobiko Fish Roe add not only a splash of color but numerous layers of flavors to each bite. The crispiness of the batter is elevated by the sweetness of the fresh fruit giving us the perfect contour of sweet and salty. The highlight of our dining experience has to be the Roasted Beijing Duck with Pancakes and Condiments. Adding a bit of theater to our dining experience, chef prepares the Roasted

Beijing Duck tableside, shredding and wrapping the pancake rolls before us. After the best part of the Roasted Beijing Duck has been placed into the pancakes, we are given a choice of how we would like the remainder of the duck to be used; Shredded Duck Salad, Stew Duck Soup or Wok-Fried in Black Bean Sauce. We opt for the Wok-Fried in Black Bean Sauce. We really like the concept of no waste, an idea other restaurants should look at adopting. Next, the Fried Boston Lobster Tail with Seven Spice Salt. This dish is executed exceptionally well, fried within its shell, chef manages to retain the light lobster meat ensuring we can enjoy the rich lobster paired with the diverse seven spices. Wanting to further explore the menu we decide to try the Dim Sum and Wok-Fried Chow Mein with Mushrooms and Chinese Chives. From the Dim Sum menu, we opt for the Steamed Vegetable Dumplings. Sadly, these were not to our liking, overly sticky and having fell apart at the touch of our chopsticks we wouldn’t look to order them again. However, the Wok-Fried Chow Mein doesn’t disappoint, from flavor to portion size.

Admittedly we were ready to skip dessert, however our waiter encourages us to try the Baked Egg Tart with Raspberry and Lychee. Two small warm glazed pastries arrive, they taste delightful, a light fluffy pastry is paired with a dominant egg center giving us a playful end to our dining experience at Shang Palace. The service needs a little bit of work, our waiter was exceptional however when he wasn’t around the service levels quickly dropped. Pricing is on the higher end and you’ll be hard pressed to find dishes lower than AED 60, but that being said the quality is exceptional, so it is a case of you get what you pay for. Overall our dining experience was very good, Shang Palace offers an authentic Cantonese experience from the cuisine to the décor. Our advice, explore the menu and try as many dishes as you can, the diverse flavors will have you returning sooner than planned. Caesars Bluewaters Dubai Teams U Back on Modern Japane Introducing a second Michelin-Star chef into the culinary mix, Caesars Bluewaters Dubai opens modern Japanese restaurant Paru in partnership with award-winning Michelin-Star Chef Akira Back (Sung Ook Back). Located on a stunning rooftop at Caesars Resort Bluewaters Dubai, with breathtaking views across two spectacular terraces, the new eatery offers an eclectic menu of modern Japanese dishes masterfully created by Back. The perfect spot to watch the sun set across the Arabian Gulf, Paru offers guests something unique – a buzzing bar, chilled out lounge and modern restaurant, all in one slickly-designed space.

Divided into three distinct areas, the journey into Paru starts with the impressive light-filled dining room. An intricate ceiling of stark white origami flowers lit with turquoise blue pays homage to the restaurant’s Japanese roots and mirrors ocean views seen from its towering glass wall. Suspended from the ceiling, a flowing steel and crystal sculpture with strings of luminous orbs nods to the restaurant’s name, meaning ‘pearl’ in Japanese. Framing the bar and sushi counter, a modern mural – alluding to art as a form of love – was designed by Akira Back’s artist mother, adding a dramatic focal point for those perched beneath it. Guests can watch chefs at work while indulging in a selection of delicacies from the menu or finding comfort in a more chilled out meal in lounge seating located by the floor-to-ceiling windows. For those that want to dine ‘Japanese-style’, a tall central long table creates the perfect opportunity to people-watch or keep tracks on Paru’s Resident DJ. Outside, Paru offers guests the choice of two al fresco terraces, both designed for dining and the quintessential sundowner experience. Flanked by bonsai trees, the dining terrace creates the ideal chance to tuck into the modern Japanese menu while taking in JBR’s epic skyline. On the other side, the lounge terrace with cushioned wicker sofas and low tables is a more chilled affair, serving shisha every evening. Set to top every list of “spots to catch the sunset” it boasts sweeping views of the glittering Arabian Gulf, city skyscrapers and curving fronds of Palm Jumeirah. Created by Chef Akira Back, Paru’s eclectic menu reflects the culinary landscape of modern Japan. Having trained in Japan for many years, Back is known for bringing a sense of adventure to his culinary creations, taking traditional flavours and techniques from the region and giving them his own signature twist. Born in Korea and raised in Aspen, Colorado, Chef Akira Back brings a sense of adventure and creativity to his culinary creations. A former professional snowboarder turned Michelin Chef, Akira Back is at the helm of several award-winning restaurants around the world including one Michelin-Starred DOSA in Seoul, Korea. Having built strong partnerships across the world, Akira Back has led his team to successful ventures while creating innovative venues and a global brand. He continues to expand his global portfolio with 15 restaurants currently in operation and an additional twelve set to launch by 2020.

A Day of Wellness at Yas Hotel Abu Dhabi

42 | Dining and Nightlife Middle East

Today we are visiting Yas Hotel Abu Dhabi to review their award-winning spa, Espa. After our treatment we will then be venturing to Amici, the hotel’s much-acclaimed Italian restaurant to try out a few dishes. ESPA at Yas Hotel Abu Dhabi is a modern spa emanating style and sophistication fused with Middle Eastern traditions. Set over Yas Marina, this two-leveled spa offers a sensory journey with tranquil spaces and luxuriant treatment experiences. As we enter the spa we are warmly greeted by the team and asked to fill in a questionnaire detailing our requirements, from the pressure of our treatment to the preferred oils, we list everything to cater for our individual needs. For today’s visit at ESPA we will be experiencing the couple’s room. At first glance the couple’s room is spacious and private. It offers two single massage beds, a private jacuzzi, a private relaxation area and a large changing room with a rain shower and steam room combined for the ultimate relaxation area. We waste no time getting into our robes and heading to the relaxation room to enjoy the views over the famous F1 track. The relaxation room is a tranquil private space and we embrace a few quiet moments before we are called for our treatment. The spa team are very professional and informative, they talk us through the treatment and take the time to understand any areas of concern. Upon explaining about our stiff back, they suggest the various strokes and kneading they can use to help sooth aching muscles. We ask the therapist to adjust the temperature slightly and we are all set for our treatment to begin. The dimly lit treatment room, relaxing oil aroma and comfortable massage beds offer a sense of calm from our hectic day. The 60-minute Aromatherapy Massage is performed well, and as promised the therapist uses a variety of massage techniques ensuring our muscle tension is relieved. June | 43

Following our spa treatment, we make our way to Amici. Amici, Yas Hotel Abu Dhabi’s Italian restaurant offers authentic Italian cuisine in stylish surroundings. Each meal is made with artisanal ingredients sourced from different parts of Italy and complemented by a sophisticated beverage menu. The restaurant offers indoor seating, with a focus on the glass walled kitchen and outdoor seating, on the terrace. The menu boasts all the classic favorites from pasta, pizza to meat and fish dishes, all made from the finest and freshest ingredients, promising to bring the true taste of Italy to your plate. To begin we order the Burrata from the antipasti menu which consists of burrata cheese, spinach salad, cherry tomatoes and basil dressing. As we take our first bite of the Burrata our tastebuds come alive with the taste of it’s rich and creamy center. This Burrata would rival that of other Italian restaurants in Abu Dhabi. For the main course I order the Dentice e Gamberi which consists of red snapper, king prawns, fennel and asparagus with a side of garlic and rosemary roasted potatoes. The seafood is delicious from the echoes of the slightly crisp skinned red snapper to the comfort of the roasted potatoes. My dining partner orders the Risotto alla Pescatora which consists of prawns, clams, scallops, parsley and lobster bisque. As a side I select the Broccoli dashed with olive oil, garlic and chili. Similar to a paella the Risotto alla Pescatora is aromatic and bursting with seafood fare. The portion is, in true Italian style extremely generous and we struggle to finish both our dishes. As we are so full from our mains we unfortunately have to skip dessert however we were told that the Tiramisu and the Cannoli di Ricotta are not to be missed upon our next visit. Overall our wellness day at Yas Hotel Abu Dhabi was fantastic. From the relaxing spa to the true Italian fare at Amici the team at Yas Hotel Abu Dhabi delivered on service, expectations and professionalism. We would recommend you visit ESPA at Yas Hotel Abu Dhabi for a relaxing experience or if you are looking for a great Italian restaurant to stop by Amici for an Italian experience you will not forget.
