Buddha-Bar Beach Abu Dhabi

Buddha-Bar Beach is the brand-new concept of luxurious summery lifestyle and dining. Located at The St. Regis Saadiyat Island Resort, Buddha-Bar Beach has created a fascinating experience of taste, music and style; in Buddha-Bar Beach Abu Dhabi, these two worlds collide, creating an unmet adventure where time stands still. The Buddha-Bar Beach menu offers a selection of Pacific Rim cuisine, a masterful blend of fine ingredients and spices where East Chinese, Japanese, Thai and other Asian flavors combine subtly with a zest of the West. As the sun begins to set we make our way to Buddha-Bar Beach. Located on the shores of the pristine Saadiyat beach, Buddha-Bar Beach has a large outdoor seating area separated into two parts, one an outdoor dining area and the other a lounge area. Inside guests can choose to dine in the spacious dining area, watch as the chefs carefully craft each dish at the sushi counter, relax in the lounge or enjoy a stylish beverage in the bar area. Before I talk about the food, I must recommend the Care Bear mocktail, when I say wow I mean wow. This mocktail oozes flavor and finesse, this creamy, strawberry masterpiece is amazing. It was that good we ordered four. Now onto the dining experience. The menu offers a variety of creatively crafted dishes, fine-tuned to perfection under the guidance of talented Head Chef, Eko Ridwan. To start we try a selection of Buddha-Bar Beach’s speciality sushi rolls and sashimi. The sashimi consists of Tuna, Salmon, Otoro and Yellowtail. The quality of the fish is beyond anything that we have tasted, the Otoro, the most desired part of the blue fin tuna belly is especially delicious. The sushi is exceptional, just when we thought we had tasted every sushi dish possible chef and his team introduce us to the Terishake Rolls with Prawn Furai, Cream Cheese, Salmon, Lime, Teriyaki Sauce, Yuzu Gel.

Next we sample the famous Buddha-Bar Chicken Salad, Five Spiced Grilled Chicken Thigh, Napa Cabbage and Sesame Based Buddha-Bar Sauce. We are really impressed with the salad, bursting with flavor we never expected to be so wowed by a salad. Next the ceviche, we sample small portions of Hamachi Ceviche and the Maguro Wasabi Ceviche. In comparison we would recommend the Maguro Wasabi Ceviche, infusing wasabi and truffle, each bite offers the richness of the truffle followed by the tang of the wasabi. For the soup we try the Mediterranean style Tom Yum Soup with Red Snapper, King Prawns, Shimeji Mushrooms, Asparagus and Wakame. We love the unique twist, and best of all the staff ask us how spicy we would like the soup. Our favorite dish, the Deep-Fried Lobster Dumplings on a Tom Yum Cream Sauce, topped with Papaya Salad and sprinkled with Crispy Nori. This dish really does take your senses on a journey of flavor, from the thick Lobster, creamy Tom Yum to the zesty Papaya Salad and the crunchy salty Nori. For the mains we enjoy the Ama Miso Glacier 51 Toothfish and the Thai Red Curry. It was the first time we tried Toothfish and we really enjoyed the flavor its very similar to crab. The Miso and truffle dust adds a rich underlining tone to the dish. Concluding our dining experience, we indulge in the Chocolate Fondant with Vanilla Ice Cream. The rich 70% dark chocolate oozes out of the soft spongy casing, making it a superb ending to an exhilarating evening of exquisite dining. Overall Buddha-Bar Beach Abu Dhabi located at The St. Regis Saadiyat Island Resort exceeded our expectations, from service, taste to presentation, this restaurant is making its mark on Abu Dhabi’s dining scene and we think it just raised the bar for dining in the city. Dino’s Bistro It

10 | Dining and Nightlife Abu Dhabi

taliano

Dino’s Bistro Italiano is one of the newest Italian restaurants to launch in the city. Located at Pearl Rotana Capital Centre, Dino’s is our dining destination for this evening. Dino’s is an authentic Italian restaurant serving modern cuisine in a lively and casual setting. Dishes range from pasta, meat to fish, all are made from the finest and freshest ingredients, bringing the true taste of Italy to your plate. As we enter Dino’s we feel like we have been transported back in time to the 1960’s streets of Rome. Intimate tables are covered with red and white checked tablecloths, glass bottles dripped in candle wax and an open pizza station all set the mood. Although Dino’s has its traditional Italian touches the back-lit wall and digital waiter name tags make it cool and contemporary. When it comes to taking our order, our waiter writes it down on the paper table topper ensuring that the order is correct but also adding some fun to the evening, later we are given crayons to draw as we please. We look through the menu and select our dishes. For appetizers we order the Buffalo Mozzarella, Vine Ripe Tomatoes with Kalamata Olives, Rocca and Pesto alongside the Roasted Prawns wrapped in Italian meat with Chili, Garlic and Lemon Butter. The Buffalo Mozzarella dish is extremely generous, so much so we are unable to finish the serving, despite the fact it tastes delicious. The Roasted Prawns are divine the Chili, Garlic and Lemon Butter add a mmm to every bite. For our main course we order the Lasagna Al Forno which comes in two options traditional Beef or Vegetarian. We select the Vegetarian option, made with Squash, Spinach and Broccoli my dining companion opts for the Fettuccine Alla Bolognese, a traditional Fettuccine with Bolognese sauce. As we are sat opposite the open pizza oven, the smell of freshly made pizza becomes too much to resist, so we order a Margherita Pizza made with Tomato Sauce, Mozzarella Cheese and Basil. The mains are enjoyable but it’s the freshly made pizza that is the star of the show. From the thick base to the chunks of tomatoes and the perfectly melted cheese, we may have just found the best pizza in the city. Later we discover that the team at Dino’s use a secret ingredient when making the dough which contributes to its unique and tasty flavor. Having slightly overindulged, for dessert we decide to share the Fresh Strawberries with Mint Gelato. The strawberries have been soaked in elderflower and lemon giving them a floral taste, a wonderful way to conclude our dining experience at Dino’s. Overall Dino’s Bistro Italiano serves good homemade Italian food at an affordable price. The service is warm, and the setting is relaxed. Be one of the first to try Dino’s newly launched weekend brunch. Enjoy authentic dishes at a new a la cartè style brunch with a choice of unlimited starters, mains, pizzas, sharing dishes and desserts served right to your table. Brunch is held every Friday and Saturday from 12.00noon to 4.00pm. Packages start at AED 165 per person for soft drinks and mocktails to AED 215 for grapes and bubbles. Children will enjoy a 50% discount on the brunch price and interactive activities including pizza making sessions and more. Dino’s Bistro Italiano, Pearl Rotana Capital Centre, 02 307 5591

Market Kitchen De’Vine Friday Brunch

16 | Dining and Nightlife Abu Dhabi

Located within Le Royal Méridien Abu Dhabi, Market Kitchen serves modern American cuisine. Promising market freshness and the highest quality ingredients, dishes are inspired by the classic cuisine of 3-star Michelin Chef, Jean-George Vongerichten. The restaurants décor is light and modern, echoing elements of a New York loft. White painted brick walls are decorated with wooden shelving, featuring household kitchen tools. The dark wooden floor and low hanging lights give the restaurant a cozy yet urban vibe. The high beamed vaulting, floor to ceiling windows and the decorative tree in the middle of the restaurant ooze sophistication. Upstairs the bar provides a little hideaway overlooking the restaurant. This Friday we are visiting Market Kitchen to try their De’Vine Friday Brunch. The De’Vine Friday Brunch is different to many other brunches in the city as it is served tableside. Guests can select their desired dish from the menu which is then served directly to the table. All the dishes are displayed on a one-page menu and broken down into four sections, starters, appetizers, main course and dessert. Guests can simply choose as many plates as they wish from each of the four sections and reorder if they wish for more. To start, we select one of each of the four starter options, Crispy Calamari with Citrus Chili Dip, Tuna Tartare with Yuzu Dressing, Tuna Sashimi with Crispy Sushi Rice, Scallions, Chipotle Mayonnaise and the Homemade Ricotta with Cranberry Compote and Sourdough Toast. Our favorite dish is the Homemade Ricotta, this dish is light, fresh and flavorful. The dish we like the least is the Tuna Tartare, which seems to have been finely blended into some type of paste, although the taste is appealing the texture sadly lets it down.

The appetizer section of the menu offers three options, Roasted Red Pepper and Tomato Soup, Quinoa Salad and Mushroom Pizza, as tempting as all three dishes seem, we are cautious that we still have the main course and dessert ahead of us, so we just select the Mushroom Pizza. The main course is where Market Kitchen’s De’Vine Brunch really excels. We select the Roasted Meager with Malaysian Chili Sauce and the Braised Lamb Shoulder with Creamy Polenta, Celeriac Crisp. The team then kindly change the Roasted Corn Fed Chicken with a Salmon dish. The Roasted Meager has an aromatic blend of spices not to spicy but just enough to tantalize the taste buds. The Braised Lamb Shoulder is delicious, full of flavor and served piping hot, thick bites of lamb offer fork after fork of deliciousness, the Creamy Polenta, Celeriac Crisp adds just the right amount of texture. The Salmon dish is also sensational, it flakes beautifully, and you can really taste the freshness. Ending our brunch on a sweet note we opt for two of the three desserts available. The Warm Chocolate Cake with Vanilla Ice-Cream and the Chocolate Ice-Cream Sundae with Popcorn and Chocolate Fudge Sauce. For those who enjoy cheesecake the Market Cheesecake is also available. Both desserts score highly but our favorite is the Chocolate Ice-Cream Sundae, a yummy tasty treat to end our De’Vine Friday Brunch journey. Market Kitchen, Le Royal Méridien Abu Dhabi, 800 101 101

Zen The Spa at Rotana We are picked up from our beach villa and taken to the spa via the hotels golf buggy which transports guests around the resort upon request. As we enter the spa we are warmly welcomed by our therapists. They take the time to explain the various treatments. All taste fantastic, the Burrata is beautifully presented, encased within plump Heirloom Tomatoes. Si Ristorante Italiano and Bar The next day we make our way to Si Ristorante Italiano and Bar. We are given a warm Italian welcome upon arrival. To begin we order a selection of starters, Oven Baked Eggplant Involtini, rolled slices of Eggplant stuffed with Ricotta, Herbs and Parmesan on Salsa di Pomodoro, Messy Prawns, oven roasted with Butter, Chili, Garlic and Herbs and the Burrata with Char-Grilled Eggplant, Gremolata and Pesto. The Messy Prawns deliver as promised, and we cannot help but dip our bread into the delicious sauce. My dining companion thoroughly enjoys the Burrata, which is partially made in-house. From the Pasta and Risotto specialties I order the Spaghetti con Gamberi tossed with Shrimps, Datterino Tomatoes, Basil and Olive Oil and my dining companion selects the Linguine Napolitana, with Tomatoes, Olive Oil, Garlic and Basil. The charismatic restaurant manager recommends we also try the 22 | Dining and Nightlife Abu Dhabi

Spaghetti with Bottarga and Clams, Carpet Clams with Air Dried Mullet Roe. The pasta is cooked to perfection, the Spaghetti with Bottarga and Clams is divine, the slight saltiness verses the chunks of juicy tomatoes is pure Italian cooking at its core. Guests can also tailor dishes as per their dietary requirements and can choose from whole wheat or gluten free spaghetti, fusilli and penne. If you’re a fan of cheese a visit to Si Ristorante Italiano and Bar is a must, they have a section of the menu dedicated to cheeses. Guests can even make their own dish, selecting the cheese, be it Mozzarella or Burrata and adding the dips as they wish. With so many Italian restaurants in the city competition is fierce, but Si Ristorante Italiano and Bar and its all-star Italian team excel because the use of fresh seasonal produce matched with the teams’ native culinary experience transpires into delectable Italian cuisine at its best.

Turtle Bay Bar and Grill Our final night is spent dining at Turtle Bay Bar and Grill, Saadiyat Rotana Resort and Villas signature restaurant. With temperatures rising we decide to sit indoors and enjoy the view of the large open kitchen. Inside the décor has light Polynesian touches, we especially like the teams’ vibrant tropical shirts. Although the menu does focus on grills be sure to explore other dishes especially from the Raw Bar section of the menu, which boasts a selection of raw imaginative seafood and beef. We begin our dining experience by selecting the Hamachi Tartare Tacos with Chili and Lemongrass served in a Crispy Gyoza Shell with Avocado and Scallions alongside the Lobster Scallop Ceviche with Coconut and Tamarind Chili. The Hamachi Tartare Tacos are so tasty, we are almost tempted to order another portion, whilst as many of you know we are big fans of the Lobster Scallop Ceviche.

For the mains we both decide to select fish dishes, I opt for the Farmed Red Snapper whilst my dining companion selects the Scottish Salmon. We like the fact that we can select the cooking method, it is especially useful if you want to dine out but are trying to make healthier choices, we both decide to have our fish steamed. Alternatively, guests can also select to have their fish pan seared or baked. For our side dish we share a portion of Truffle Shoestring Fries with Parmesan and opt for the Lemon-Parsley Butter to accompany the fish. The Scottish Salmon perfectly flakes off the fork, whilst the Farmed Red Snapper is full of flavor, the cooking method has really allowed the fish to retain its natural flavors. The Truffle Shoestring Fries are a refreshing change from standard fries and taste scrumptious. Finishing on a sweet note we enjoy the Raspberry and Lemon Crème Brûlée, a perfect combination of sweet and zesty.

The spa offers a wide variety of treatments that caters to guests with various needs, from facials, massages to slimming treatments. The signature treatment is the Signature Hammam and Massage, which incorporates Turkish and Moroccan elements. This treatment is sure to leave you feeling revitalized, in total guests will enjoy a six-step ritual comprising of cleansing, exfoliating and conditioning the body. The treatments at Anantara Spa are a synergy of traditional Thai techniques infused with rich Arabic culture. Eventually we decide to try the 60-minute couples massage treatment. Before we enter the treatment room we are presented with a selection of fragrant oils to select for our treatment. Each oil has a different benefit from stress relief, muscle relief to relaxation. We select the anti-stress oil made with menthol, peppermint and lavender, promising to leave us uplifted whilst reducing muscle pain and tension. We then make our way to the treatment room, here we are greeted by the therapists, who are professional and welcoming. As expected their knowledge of the brand and products are exceptional. The treatment room has authentic Thai and Arabic elements, deep purples and golds add a sense of luxury. The changing area is light, spacious and even boasts a steam room. In the main treatment area are two large comfortable massage beds and an Arabian bath tub. Our treatment begins by our therapists cleaning our feet with milk and honey. Shortly after the treatment begins, as our treatments are tailored I opt for slightly more pressure whilst my companion decides on a more relaxing massage. Our therapists do exceptionally well in kneading our knots and focusing on our problematic areas. The outcome, as intended, left us feeling de-stressed, relaxed and re-vitalized. If you are looking for a relaxing treatment in a tranquil environment just a short distance from the city we would highly recommend Anantara Spa. The facilitates are immaculate and the therapists take the time to hear your concerns, ensuring a delightful treatment. Anantara Spa at Eastern Mangroves Hotel and Spa by Anantara is a great option to experience true Thai inspired treatments by a professional team who welcome guests with true Thai hospitality. Massages start from AED 600 per person for 60 minutes. Anantara Spa, 02 656 1146

Effective 1st July 2018, Marriott International will assume operation of the Yas Island hotel, which will go through a refurbishment period before opening under W Hotels– marking the debut of the brand in Abu Dhabi. Areas across the hotel will be refreshed and redesigned as per W Hotels’ brand standards, with an upgrade to its lobby and pool facilities, whilst remaining open to guests. The stand-alone hotel which overlooks the Formula 1 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix race track is a key component of Aldar’s Yas Island destination strategy. The island is set to welcome Warner Bros. World Abu Dhabi this July, building on the existing world-class entertainment and leisure attractions and driving more UAE residents and tourists to the destination, where Aldar has a portfolio of seven hotels. Abu Dhabi’s media and entertainment free zone is also relocating to state-of-the-art facilities on Yas Island and has appointed Aldar as its strategic real estate partner. The first phase of the new free zone is valued at approximately AED 1 billion and is set to grow as twofour54 continues to grow, with a target of attracting 10,000 working professionals from the media sector to Yas Island. This will form part of the AED 12 billion Yas Bay master development, which also comprises a waterfront and entertainment district and an urban island community. Commenting on the announcement, Talal Al Dhiyebi, Chief Executive Officer of Aldar Properties, said, “Appointing Marriott International to manage the operations of our Yas Island hotel supports our strategy to employ the most reputable international operators and reflects our active approach to the management of our portfolio. Marriott International’s experience will ensure guests have a memorable stay at our world-class hotel while driving value for our Asset Management business. Our enviable portfolio of 11 hotels, including the recently acquired Westin Abu Dhabi Golf Resort & Spa and Eastern Mangroves Hotel & Spa by Anantara, positions us well to drive the activation of Yas Island and Saadiyat Island, and cater for the increasing number of tourists visiting Abu Dhabi.” Alex Kyriakidis, President and Managing Director, Middle East and Africa, Marriott International commented, “We are delighted to work with Aldar to introduce W Hotels to Yas Island, bringing a new dimension to the luxury and lifestyle hospitality offering on the iconic landmark. BLACK TAP SET TO OPEN IN YAS MALL

36 | Dining and Nightlife Abu Dhabi

The wait is finally over! Black Tap, the cult New York-based burger joint known for its signature craft burgers and famous Instagrammable milkshakes, is opening its first restaurant in Abu Dhabi early this July. Black Tap’s arrival at Abu Dhabi’s Yas Mall – brought to you by Sunset Hospitality and Addmind Abu Dhabi - follows the brand’s large success in Dubai, with locations at Jumeriah Al Naseem and the Rixos Premium Dubai in Jumeirah Beach Residence. Black Tap’s international expansion includes Geneva and Kuwait, and Black Tap’s first location in Asia, at Marina Bay Sands, Singapore, which will also open this summer. Now Abu Dhabi residents can get in on the Black Tap action and Instagram like never before, with a hearty combination of award-winning burgers, decadent milkshakes and a completely new-to-the-UAE line-up of creative mocktails, according to Joe Isidori, the culinary mastermind behind Black Tap. “Black Tap takes the classic American luncheonette, and puts our spin on it, with high quality ingredients, 90s hip hop pumping through the speakers, and a one-of-a-kind atmosphere,” says Black Tap owner and Michelin-Starred Chef Joe Isidori. “The response in the Middle East has been extraordinary, and we’re thrilled to bring the Black Tap experience to Abu Dhabi’s Yas Mall” says Chris Barish, Black Tap owner, restaurateur and the man behind Black Tap’s expansion in the Middle East. Diners can expect all the crowd favorites from Black Tap’s New York and Dubai menus, including the award-winning Greg Norman Burger with Wagyu beef and blue cheese, the classic All-American Burger and the all-natural Californian with turkey, avocado, Swiss cheese and truffle mayo.

Naturally, Black Tap’s gloriously sculpted CrazyShake™ milkshakes will take pride of place in Abu Dhabi. Diners looking for a sugar high can opt from favorites such as the Cookies ‘n’ Cream Supreme (Oreo shake with a vanilla-frosted rim with crushed Oreos topped with a ‘cookies ‘n’ cream sandwich, crumbled Oreo, whipped cream and chocolate drizzle), Cotton Candy (Strawberry shake with a vanilla frosted rim with blue, pink and pearl chocolates, garnished with a pink lollipop, rock candy, whipped cream and cotton candy) and, of course, the Instagram-favorite Cake Shake (Cake Batter shake with a vanilla frosted rim with rainbow sprinkles topped with funfetti cake slice, whipped cream, rainbow sprinkles and a cherry). Black Tap’s Abu Dhabi restaurant will also feature a dedicated new menu of mocktails for those looking for something refreshing. “American authenticity, quality ingredients and a relaxed, fun vibe are the key elements of Black Tap,” adds Antonio Gonzalez, CEO of Sunset Group, which operates Black Tap. “Black Tap has already garnered a hugely loyal following in the UAE thanks to the popularity of our Dubai branches and we expect to expand our reach as we launch our amazing craft burgers and CrazyShakes™ in Abu Dhabi.” “Yas Mall is known as a hub of culinary innovation and entertainment, and Black Tap is a great brand to introduce to the Abu Dhabi market,” adds Elie Kanaan, Addmind Abu Dhabi’s Managing Partner. “When we partnered up with Sunset Hospitality, we understood the brand value of Black Tap and are confident that the community is going to love trying the New York style burgers and CrazyShakes™, all modernized for the Instagram age.” Black Tap will launch at Yas Mall Abu Dhabi at the beginning of July for more info visit www.blacktapme.com

Vegetarians fear not, as the regionally-inspired Falafel Burger is on the menu, as is the popular Vegan Burger, crafted from a black bean patty, pickled onions, salsa verde, cilantro and vegan mayo.

HOTELS.COM REVEALS THE BEST FOODIE DESTINATIONS FOR MILLENNIAL TRAVELLERS IN THE UAE

According to the Hotels.com® Tasty Travels* report, two thirds of millennials in the UAE (74%) admitted a destination’s cuisine is the biggest deciding factor when picking where to holiday, with special offers (16%), beautiful beaches (51%) and the shopping scene (20%) being less appetizing. The younger generation are now even more focused on munching delicious local delicacies on holiday (67%) than visiting landmarks (65%) and exploring the outdoors (20%). Paris (27%), Tokyo (23%) and Rome (22%) have topped a list of the hottest spots on earth for foodies. Paying tribute to these delicious destinations, Hotels.com has collaborated with food artist Carl Warner to bring foodies’ favourite hangouts to life, using the city’s famous food ingredients - Parisian buildings made of cheese, the Pantheon made of pasta and Mount Fuji made of seaweed, every city looks good enough to eat. It’s food over friends these days, as 73% admit they prefer to snap their food than their friends’ faces (30%) for Instagram. #sorrynotsorry. The research found a gut-busting rise in food photography on social media, as on a week’s holiday, millennial travellers snap on average 135 photos, of which almost a quarter are of food. The Hotels.com survey also revealed that pizza and pasta (45%) are the food UAE millennials are most likely to post on social media, followed by indulgent desserts like donuts and freak shakes (15%) and Americana burgers (32%). Young travellers don’t play it safe with their food choices either, as one in five claimed they’d love to try chicken feet (19%) and garlic ice cream (19%). 38 | Dining and Nightlife Abu Dhabi

To celebrate the mouth-watering combination of food and travel, renowned food artist Carl Warner has created a unique collection of artworks bringing the top foodie destinations to life. Each city scene, captured in HD photography, is deliciously constructed with famous foods from each location. Parisian markets and the Eiffel Tower are built with decadent chocolate and blue cheese; the Pantheon and a cobbled back street in Rome are brought to life with pasta and Parmesan cheese; while a serene zen garden and tea ceremony are imagined with maki rolls, ginger and shiitake mushrooms overlooking Mount Fuji, in Warner’s tribute to Tokyo. Food artist and photographer Carl Warner, said, “When Hotels. com approached me with the idea, I instantly knew this project was right up my bean cobbled, blue cheese street! It was a great opportunity for me to bring images and scenes of these hugely popular foodie destinations to life in an exciting and contemporary way. I hope that these images will not only blow people away, but inspire them to get online, get booking and not just ‘sight-see’ but ‘sight-taste’.” The Tasty Travels research also revealed that it’s no longer about the five-star dining experience, UAE millennials now prefer street food (32%) to Michelin star restaurants (17%). Eating experiences are in fact now so high on the UAE millennial travel tick-list, (94%) travellers said foodie experiences stand out the most in their holiday memories. This topped spending time with their travel buddy (18%), and even a cheeky adrenaline activity (6%) #TastyTravels.
