Toro Toro

Toro Toro’s latest address is the UAE’s Capital, Abu Dhabi. Located just behind Jumeirah at Etihad Towers, Toro Toro is a standalone restaurant with its own entrance and valet. Behind the concept is award-winning chef Richard Sandoval whose Pan Latin flavors promise to tantalize taste buds across the city. The main dining room is situated on the ground floor whilst upstairs guests can enjoy an open terrace with uninterrupted waterfront views and the rhythms of the resident DJ. The décor fuses traditional and contemporary tastes, warm Latin-inspired tones of orange and red are enhanced by one-of-a-kind décor elements including handmade mosaic frames from Peru, displaying dramatic contemporary art and Mexican handmade carpets. The menu offers a wide selection of ceviches, hot and cold starters, skewers, empanadas, grills, steaks and sides. We select a range of small sharing plates, to start, Amarillo Ceviche, prawns, scallop, tuna, aji amarillo, olive oil, lime and Chile serrano. Although visually stunning this dish doesn’t have the depth of flavor we were hoping for. Next from the cold starters Toro Toro Salad, fava beans,

chayote, fresh cheese, roasted corn, crispy turkey rashers, tomato seed vinaigrette and the Smoked Guacamole, Mexican mashed smoked avocado served with tortilla chips. Both these dishes are amazing, the Toro Toro Salad bursts with flavor whilst the Smoking Guacamole is absolutely delicious, the smoke gives it a unique aftertaste that will leave you craving this dish for days to come. From the hot starters, the Corn Bread with tomato salsita. I can’t say I was eagerly awaiting the arrival of this dish however its subtle flavors had us mmm-ing at every bite, so good we finish the entire portion. We couldn’t resist trying the Empanadas, we select Lomo Saltado Empanada, homemade pastry, sautéed beef tenderloin the sundried tomato chimichurri. Again, another great dish. Finishing on a sweet note, from the dessert menu we select the Tres Leches, passion fruit, fresh mango and the Merengado, crunchy merengue with a refreshing sorbet. Overall Toro Toro offers a great dining experience, the dishes are delightful and visually stunning, the décor is beautiful and the team are extremely friendly. We’d even go as far as saying that this is some of the best Pan-Latin cuisine we have tasted in the city. If Pan-Latin cuisine isn’t to your taste don’t let that deter you from visiting, Toro Toro does have the best open rooftop bar in the city. Amarillo Ceviche AED 55 Toro Toro Salad AED 49 Smoking Guacamole AED 48 Corn Bread AED 29 Lomo Saltado Empanada AED 55 Tres Leches AED 39 Merengado AED 39 Toro Toro, Jumeirah at Etihad Towers, 02 811 5882 *Prices are subject to 10% service charge, 6% tourism fee and 4% municipality fee.

Battle Of The Chefs

In April 2017, Roberto’s Abu Dhabi Executive Chef, Francesco Guarracino secured victory in the first round of the Battle of the Chefs. On Wednesday, 11th of October Enrico Bartolini, Roberto’s Group Chief Culinary Advisor, faced off the culinary champion in Battle of the Chefs round two, held at Roberto’s Abu Dhabi. Enrico Bartolini has long been praised by critics as one of Italy’s most talented young chefs, he received his first Michelin Star at the young age of 29 and his second at 33, a Michelin Star in Bergamo and one in Castiglione della Pescaia, acknowledgments that already after a few months from the opening of the two restaurants sealed his reputation as an internationally renowned chef. We were invited to the exclusive media preview which took place a day before the main event. Each chef prepared three of the six courses. We were kept in the dark about which dish had been prepared by which chef. We were then given a scorecard and after each course we were asked to rank the dish.

Here’s the dishes we thought were out of this world and received our highest vote. Antipasti – Chef Enrico Bartolini Ventresca di Tonno e Dintorni Seared Bluefin tuna belly, soya bean cream and fig gel Secondi – Executive Chef, Francesco Guarracino Bianco con Salsa di Peperone Affumicata Shiso e Carciofi Miso marinated Chilean sea bass, smoked bell pepper sauce shiso and artichokes Dolci – Chef Enrico Bartolini La Fragola, Lemon custard, almond sponge, strawberry sorbet, yogurt and honey cream Shortly after our visit it was revealed that Chef Enrico Bartolini had secured victory, he plans to return to the UAE in December for the third instalment of Battle of the Chefs. BOA

One of the most renowned steakhouses in the city, BOA has long been a favorite amongst residents. Located at the Eastern Mangroves Promenade, BOA offers guests picturesque views across the mangroves and the distant city. Inside, the décor is contemporary, with warm tones and booths that offer a relaxing dining experience.

As we enter the restaurant we are warmly greeted by the team. We select our booth and start to look through the menu. For appetizers we opt for the Chilled Jumbo Prawns with lime cocktail sauce. Two juicy prawns are presented on a black slate plate, fresh and flavorful this is a great start to our dining experience. We also order the Pan-Seared Duck Liver, marinated and served with rocket, hazelnut salad and lemon curd, the combination of flavors offers a zesty yet rich taste. From the salads we choose the Table Side Classic Caesar Salad with prawns. This is an interactive experience as the salad is created and served tableside. Beautifully formed the prawns have been lightly infused with a subtle hint of garlic. For the steaks we opt for Australian Master Kobe Striploin 225g with Chimichurri sauce and the US-Black Angus Tenderloin 340g with BOA’s signature J-1 sauce. Both steaks are cooked as requested, medium. The Master Kobe is succulent, the texture is like butter. The Tenderloin is a great cut but for an extra AED 100 we’d suggest treating yourself to the Master Kobe. For sides we select the Mashed Potatoes with Roasted Garlic, Sautéed Seasonal Mushrooms and the Sautéed Broccoli. All the sides compliment the steaks well, but we did find the mushrooms slightly too salty.

16 | Dining and Nightlife Abu Dhabi

For dessert we choose the Homemade Mascarpone Cheesecake and the Strawberry Passion. The Homemade Mascarpone Cheesecake is constructed on a bed of whipped vanilla Chantilly cream, topped with fresh berries and strawberry ice cream. This dish is decadent, light and creamy it offers a refreshing end to the meal. The Strawberry Passion is equally as refreshing with strawberry and chocolate ganache, fresh gariguette, almond crumble, Chantilly and ricotta ice-cream. BOA still is and probably will be one of the best steakhouses in the city for a long time to come, its great menu, accessible location and range of money saving promotions make it not only a fabulous dining experience but one that won’t break the bank either. Todd English’s Olives

Located in the picturesque Venetian Village you will find Todd English’s Olives. Todd English is an American celebrity chef, restaurateur, author and television personality. His unique interpretation of Mediterranean cuisine and famous showmanship has impressed diners in New York, Washington D.C., Las Vegas, The Bahamas, Kuwait, Manila and Abu Dhabi.

Next the flatbread, we cannot resist the Bronx Bomber, garlic tomato sauce, beef pepperoni, caramelized onions, buffalo mozzarella, parmesan and basil. Its flawless crispy base and slightly salty aftertaste make this one great tasting dish. This is enjoyed with a side of Truffle Risotto Tater Tots. If you are ordering sides be sure to order these, you can thank us later.

Today we are visiting Todd English’s Olives for lunch. We choose to dine from the a la carte lunch menu. To start we opt for the Sweet Potato Brava’s, Beef Carpaccio and Watermelon Gazpacho. The Sweet Potato Brava’s are infused with honey jalapeno, avocado crema and crumbled feta, simple yet delicious we finish the entire portion. The Watermelon Gazpacho with feta cheese, minted oil, micro arugula is beautifully presented, the watermelon is presented in a soup style and served cold, the ricotta adds a creamy texture to the refreshing dish. The most popular dish, the Beef Carpaccio does not disappoint. Layers of beef cover a gorgonzola rosti cake, topped with mesclun greens, balsamic glazed onions, scallion aioli and parmesan. The bold flavor of the blue cheese works in perfect contrast with the beef.

Finally, dessert, we opt for the Canoli with mascarpone cream and peanut praline and the Chocolate Tart. Offering a modern twist on a classic Italian dessert the Canoli was served open, the taste however remained just as classic as expected. If you are looking for a delightful lunch or a relaxed dinner, we would recommend a trip to Todd English’s Olives. With, great Italian cuisine, indoor and outdoor seating, a separate bar and dining area and free parking on-site what’s not to love? Both pasta dishes are sensational, the freshness of the pasta is undeniable. Both dishes have a dash of sauce that adds a hint of flavor without overburdening the pasta itself, simple yet delectable. 99 Sushi Bar 99 Sushi Bar has opened its doors for the first time outside of Spain as part of The Galleria’s Dining Collection. Amid some confusion of its location guests can valet park at The Four Seasons Hotel, Abu Dhabi and once inside the hotel take the lift at the end of the corridor, which will lead outside 99 Sushi Bar. The entrance features a beautiful gold waterfall, as you walk through the door you will notice the venues contemporary design, infusing a variety of textures and colors from gold mosaic wall coverings to red velvet chairs and intricate Spanish floor tiles, acknowledgment to the brand’s heritage. 99 Sushi Bar boasts a lounge bar, restaurant and terrace. The terrace is equally as beautiful, with spanning views and a deep green moss wall, it almost feels like your own private hideaway. To start we order the Okonomiyaki, a corn tortilla topped with tuna usuzukuri and tare sauce. Best described as a Japanese pizza, we are impressed with the quality of the tuna, later we discover that 99 Sushi Bar only serves bluefin tuna, ensuring the highest quality. Next, Tiger Prawn Tempura with spicy creamy sauce. This dish is one of the best sellers and we can see why. The prawns are thick and juicy, the batter is light and crisp and the sauce adds just the right amount of flavor to compliment the dish. Moving on to the sushi, we select the Lobster Maki and the Soft Shell Crab Roll. Both come served in 8 pieces. The lobster is delightful and extremely fresh but the crab is our favorite, it offers a transition of flavors. The rice used for the sushi is also notably much fresher than that we had experienced elsewhere. From the warm nigiri sushi we choose the Golden Bricks, tuna tartar, avocado with tobiko and golden leaves, served in 6 pieces. This dish is exquisite, if they did Oscars for food this dish would surely be worthy. The Golden Bricks are not only perfectly presented but taste sensational, upon the bed of warm nigiri sits a thin slice of avocado which is then topped with a large spoonful of tuna tartar and tobiko, finished with finely cut strips of seaweed and golden leaves. This dish gives you a texture and flavor unlike any other we’ve tasted in a while. Finally, we cannot resist trying the 99-Black Cod, au gratin with two layers of red miso. This black cod measures up to others in the city extremely well, plus the portion size is almost double that of other restaurants. If you love the taste of miso this is the dish for you, the two layers give the dish a much bolder taste. Throughout our entire dining experience the quality of produce became undeniable, echoing through every dish. Only having 99 seats we hope that 99 Sushi Bar will be able to maintain the level of personalized service we received on our visit. We predict that this haute Japanese restaurant will be an enormous success amongst diners in the city. Guest can now expect to experience an interactive journey of informal dining that surpasses the everyday with a uniquely gastronomical experience.

Before our evening comes to an end the culinary team at The Park Bar and Grill have one more surprise in store for us, dessert. There is no menu, the pastry chef makes a fresh batch of desserts every day before service. This is presented on a dessert trolley and varies daily. Overall we would highly recommend the Bespoke Experience at The Park Bar and Grill. The quality of food is spectacular and the quantity of the portions are more than generous. What makes this experience so different is the interactivity of the culinary team. The team swiftly create beautiful dishes tableside adding an element of theater to your dining experience.
