Villa Toscana For dinner, we will be dining in the highly acclaimed Villa Toscana, a favorite amongst residents. Designed to replicate an Italian nobleman’s summer home, Villa Toscana oozes prestige. Its handcrafted regional Italian specialties derive from Tuscany, Umbria, and Emilia-Romagna. Before dinner we are invited to enjoy a few bites and a beverage. A small selection of bites are beautifully displayed and the team ensure we are relaxed before beginning our culinary journey. To start, the grilled octopus, comfit potatoes, speck, pink pepper corn and parsley. My dining partner opts for the spicy king prawns, baked in the oven with roasted golden garlic, olive oil focaccia croutons and Piccadilly tomatoes. This octopus is sublime, grilled on the outside yet tender on the inside, the octopus is flavorsome and cooked to perfection. The spicy king prawns are equally as enjoyable, served with a slice of bread, we enjoy every mouthful of the garlic and tomato infused broth. For the main course, homemade lobster and prawn ravioli. This dish is served as three large pieces of ravioli, filled with lobster and prawns, atop of a rich bisque, an exquisite and appetizing dish. My dining partner opts for the handmade artichoke and ricotta ravioli, drizzled truffle butter, this dish is rich and bursting with flavor. For our desserts, we order the Italian meringue parfait with hot chocolate sauce and the chocolate fondant with vanilla ice cream and strawberries. Both desserts are luscious and conclude our evening. For those looking to escape the weekly Friday Brunch hustle and bustle, Villa Toscana offers a true and traditional alternative. Saturday Tuscan Brunch is served 12:30pm to 4:00pm, every Saturday and promises to serve up fine Italian fare. Brunch with soft beverages AED 190* Brunch with grape and hops AED 290* Brunch with Italian sparkling, grape, hops and mixers AED 340*

Berri’s Cafe
One of the newest restaurants to open in Abu Dhabi, direct from the palm-lined avenues of Los Angeles, California is Berri’s Cafe. Here in Abu Dhabi it has situated itself in one of the most L.A. like spots, on the ocean front of Al Muneera. Whilst Berri’s is open all day, it is not until sunset, that the restaurants eateries and ice cream shops really begin to come alive. Berri’s Abu Dhabi prides itself on serving modern, high-quality food, with a kitchen that is open until midnight (and after, on the weekends). From California to Abu Dhabi, they appeal to those looking for a satisfying meal before the night ends. Berri’s offers a solid selection from salads to desserts, with a popular array of pizzas, pastas and a few meaty mains in between. Their salads are hearty and can be a meal in themselves. The tri-colour salad is a crispy mix of bitter radicchio, peppery arugula, creamy goat cheese and fresh sweet berries. There is balance between savoury and sweet that is utterly refreshing in the summer heat. The pizzas are thin crust and cooked in a brick oven. The famous lobster pizza features a briny lobster tomato sauce, with bites of roasted prawn. The pizza is saucy, cheesy and rich. The eggplant and burrata pizza is another winner. You will be entertained as your waiter slices open the fresh knot of burrata, spreading its creamy goodness across the pizza’s thinly grilled eggplant slices. The slim Cajun fries and roasted (fried) Brussel sprouts are delivered to the table quickly so that both are hot and crispy on arrival. Sticking to the lobster theme, the lobster ravioli is also a favourite. Al dente pockets of pasta are filled with creamy lobster and topped with a fresh tomato sauce. You will find yourself mopping up the sauce with bread, or simply just spooning it into your mouth. Dessert is worth saving room for. The French toast pudding is bread pudding made from in-house French toast and topped with a large scoop of vanilla ice cream. When they open for brunch in the coming months, I am hoping this dish will be available. A taste of the new menu is highly recommended. I was tipped off that a lotus ice cream dessert is also in the works... Berri’s is a homey, yet chic cafe. The green leather booths and views of the sparkling ocean, make it feel classy while still cosy and contemporary. Chef Eric leads the culinary team with so much enthusiasm that it is contagious. He is so appreciative of every one of his patrons, wanting every customer to enjoy his food over and over again. In fact, he has a creative licence to build some of the menu’s dishes himself, so customers are sure to see some new and inventive dishes every few months. So whilst we can’t all hop on a plane for the 15 hour flight to L.A., we can head out to Al Muneera for the next best thing. Street Food Night Today we are trying out the newly launched Street Food Night at Fairways, located in The Westin Abu Dhabi Golf Resort and Spa. As many of you will know, Fairways is home to the very popular Bubbalicious brunch, we are curious to see if the team can replicate its success. We are warmly greeted by the team who take the time to show us and other guests around the carnival like theatrical maze of street food pop up stands. The stands are decorated to replicate colourful market stands, each offering a different dish. Some of the tasty dishes on offer include stir-fried fish with chilli sauce, chicken green curry, fried rice which is cooked live, butter chicken in buns, dal, spinach quesadillas, salmon roll, California rolls, tuna rolls, kappa with peppered beef, stuffed falafel, glass noodle soup, potato with mustard salad, chicken and pineapple salad, lentil soup and hot dogs. Unusual dishes such as the chicken liver sandwich and the falooda station are also available for the more adventurous foodie. Our favourite dish is the pulled beef roll, succulent cuts of pulled beef layered into a soft bread bun and smothered in BBQ sauce. It is so good we go up for a second helping. If you have a sweet tooth you will love the dessert station, it boasts jars of sweets, crème brûlée, chocolate mousse, bread pudding and assorted cheeses to mention a few. We sampled a few of the desserts but the crème brûlée was our absolute favourite. The signature Asian mocktails are also fun to try, these include black jasmine infused ice tea, tamarind cooler which consists of tamarind syrup, lime juice and soda and the third mocktail which is our favourite and is made from rose water, sweet condensed milk, mango and Nata de Coco. The team at Fairways offered a great service, professional yet welcoming, all were very knowledgeable about the cuisine and even recommended we try certain dishes. Street Food Night showcases food and drink from all around the world, it takes place every Wednesday from 7.00pm to 11.00pm and is priced at AED 199 net including house beverage. Eton Mess This traditional English dessert consists of sliced strawberries, broken meringue and thick whipped cream. The recipe is thought to have originated from Eton College back in the 1800’s when they would play their annual cricket match against the pupils of Harrow School. This is one of my favorite summer desserts, not only does it include strawberries but the broken meringues allow nervous cooks some room for error. Ingredients • 175g golden caster sugar • 3 large egg whites • 450g fresh strawberries, chopped • 1 tablespoon icing sugar • 570 ml double cream Instructions • Pre-heat the oven to 140°C Method 1. Place the 3 large egg whites in a bowl and whisk until they form soft high peaks 2. Then add the golden caster sugar, a tablespoon at a time, whisk until all the sugar has dissolved 3. Take scoops of the mixture and place it in rows on a lined baking tray, continue until all the mixture is used 4. Place the baking tray in the center of the oven and set heat to 140°C 5. Cook the meringues for 1 hour, then leave to cool until the oven is completely cold 6. Next, chop all the strawberries 7. Place half the strawberries in the blender together with the icing sugar and blend into a purée, sieve to remove the seeds 8. Crush the meringues, add the double cream, sprinkle with the remaining strawberries and drizzle the purée all over the meringues Easy Method To save time you can buy the meringues ready made 1. Cut the strawberries in half 2. Whip the cream until it becomes thick and forms a soft peak 3. Crush the meringues and top with the whipped cream and strawberries 4. Spoon the Eton Mess into individual dishes
Enjoy!

Azkadenya Popular restaurant Azkadenya is now open in Abu Dhabi’s Marina Mall. Hailing from Jordan, the modern-retro, casual dining concept was an instant hit in cosmopolitan capital Amman when it opened in 2011, this is the group’s third outpost in the UAE and the first in Abu Dhabi. The eatery is very popular in Dubai, so it was immediately welcomed by familiar fans in Abu Dhabi. The restaurant is colourful and light, allowing diners to eat in peace behind the intricate Arabic trellises, separating the bland mall lighting from the bright and cozy interior. You might be able to avoid the crowd by going for an early weekend lunch but they are open for a very popular breakfast and have a fairly steady clientele all day long. The menu reflects favourites of Arabic specialties with a few excitingly modern twists, like the creamy pink hummus. The beautiful, naturally neon pink dish is served in a contrasting bright blue bowl. The lentil mujadara is made with protein rich quinoa instead of rice and the signature salad features large chunks of avocado. The spicy falafel plate is an adaptation to the standard with a thin, peppery, tomato based filling. However, for the true traditionalist, the staples are on standby. The beef shawarma platter is served piping hot on a metal skewer, staying warm over hot coals. While it is served with saj bread and a few accoutrements, the meat is flavourful enough to be enjoyed on its own. The grilled seabass is another specialty. It is simple and healthy, rubbed in coriander chili paste before being seared. It tastes like it was cooked on a charcoal BBQ next to the ocean. Azkadenya also manages to create a few excellent desserts. The ultimate is the sticky date pudding which is served sizzling, in hot caramel sauce and topped with a large scoop of vanilla ice cream. Visually stimulating is the crunchy kanafeh sandwich, a version of an Arabic ice cream sandwich, served with your choice of ice-cream. Like most Arabic cuisine, Azkadenya is best shared with others. The tables were filled with families and friends stopping in for everything from a quick shawarma to a more leisurely multi-course traditional lunch. The service is welcoming and well experienced with kids. Abu Dhabi is lucky to have another great option for experiencing some of the best of the region’s cuisine. Azkadenya is open seven days a week, from 10.00am to 12.00am. Azkadenya, 02 621 2788 Words by Daniela Croda Daniela is a food writer and baker, always thinking about great food. Every Friday the Four Seasons Hotel Abu Dhabi holds its impressive ‘Friday Best’ brunch in Crust, the hotels market-inspired neighbourhood restaurant. Crust’s minimalistic contemporary style employs neutral tones, such as white, cream and brown, making it the perfect backdrop to the colourful fare. We arrive around 1.00pm, Crust is already alive with guests enjoying a hearty brunch. We take a seat indoors, near the dessert station, a small window offers views across the tranquil azure waters. Our waiter arrives to take our drink order and briefs us about the brunch. We are happy to hear that starters are served to the table, allowing us to relax and take in the atmosphere. First to arrive is the caviar, presented on crushed ice the La Maison Nordique caviar has been sourced from Dubai. In the mouth, the caviar reveals the perfect balance of saltiness, the texture is firm and its appearance glossy. Next are the oysters, impressive, but what really has us excited is that they have been sourced locally. The oysters have been farmed in the Dibba Bay area in Fujairah. Whilst imported oysters are refrigerated, Dibba Bay oysters are transported straight from the farm, reducing carbon emissions and ensuring that you get the freshest oysters, straight from the sea to your table. Later that afternoon we speak to Executive Chef, Giancarlo Di Francesco who tells us that the vegetables have also been sourced locally from organic farms across the UAE. As we explore the brunch we discover Middle Eastern, Western and Asian specialties. From the cold dishes, we enjoy rock melon with goat cheese, burrata and artichoke. The mini fish tacos are a must, these small bites are loaded with a choice of lobster, salmon, or tuna. The live grill is also enjoyable with a range of protein being grilled before your eyes. Other stations include, mini bruschetta, pizza, assorted cheeses, shawarma, a raw bar which offers sushi and sashimi and a cold mezze selection. After a few nibbles, we decide to try the roast, we enjoy thin cuts of turkey, a juicy cut of beef, a spoonful of glazed carrots and of course a large Yorkshire pudding, which we drape in thick gravy, it feels like a Sunday afternoon down the local (minus the five-star plush surroundings and excellent service, but you get the idea). To ensure that you can remain seated the team pass-by like clockwork with trolleys, each featuring a different cuisine. This adds an element of theatre to the brunch as they carefully craft everything from beef tartar to bhel puri. The dessert selection is exceptional, beautifully crafted cakes, fresh cupcakes, a live waffle station and enough sweet treats to make other brunches blush. Little ones will be left entertained as Crust offers a dedicated kids room full of activities for them to enjoy. With the ceiling full of colourful balloons, two bouncy castles, colouring tables, cinema screens and a balloon artist, along with their own food offerings what’s not to like. The culinary team at Four Seasons Hotel Abu Dhabi ensures that the high quality of the cuisine is consistent from start to finish. The service is friendly, approachable, upbeat but never intrusive. This is what we feel makes it one of the top 3 brunches in Abu Dhabi. Brunch is available every Friday from 12.30pm to 4.00pm, AED 275* soft beverages, AED 385* bubbles and mixers, AED 545* with French bubbles, AED 125* children 6-12 years old, children under 6 dine complimentary. 1762
When the news broke that 1762 were opening their first outlet in Abu Dhabi we could hardly contain our excitement. Many of you will know the brand from Dubai, where it is located at some of the coolest addresses, such as JLT and Media City. The interiors at 1762 can be best described as countryside chic meets urban living. Exposed brick walls, green glossy tiles, small potted plants and large leather chairs are just a few of the stylish interiors you can expect to see. As we enter 1762 we are greeted by the energic team. Much smaller than its Dubai counterparts, its Abu Dhabi outlet offers a cosy, more boutique vibe. The vibrant salads instantly catch our attention, everything looks so fresh. The menu offers hearty soups, gourmet sandwiches, pies, quiches and delicious salad concoctions. To start we try a selection of salads, loaded potato, chicken caesar, super raspberry and Thai zoodle. Whilst all are delightful, our recommendation is the super raspberry, the combination is superb. Up next, our absolute favourite, 1762 roast beef Yorkshire pudding wrap. The wrap itself is made from a flat Yorkshire pudding and stuffed with mountains of thick juicy beef, served with a pot of gravy for your dipping pleasure. Be sure to leave room for dessert, the salted billionaire shortbread is out of this world. Be warned it is rich and we mean super rich, it’s not called billionaire for nothing, if this shortbread was a person it would be make the Forbes rich list all day every day. 1762 does also offer a range of healthy menu items such as the smoked salmon and avocado on rye or the super skinny egg white wrap. Whatever your fancy 1762 has something for everyone. We loved the interior, service and food selection. Most importantly the freshness of the food. We will let you in on a little secret, 1762 only keeps their food available for 24 hours and that includes the production time. This ensures that no matter what you select it will be super fresh and tasty. No need to worry about food wastage either the team get to enjoy any items not sold. The only question we have is how do we apply? Currently 1762 is open 8.00am to 6.00pm Sunday to Thursday and is closed on Friday and Saturday. 1762, Al Ain Tower, Al Khalidiya, Abu Dhabi, 800 1762
