About Chile

About NGI Chile

From a seemingly never-ending coastline to blue lakes, tall volcanoes, mammoth glaciers, lush valleys, native forests and desert expanses, Chile is a land of remarkable vistas and wondrous contrasts. On the north, the vast, bone-dry Atacama Desert. To the south, giant ice fields. With the Andes and the Pacific Ocean sheltering green valleys and vineyards in the center and a south blanketed in ancient native forests, Chile stands fully protected from foreign pests and disease. Its unique geography is striking, varied, and pristine.

The Chilean Association of Graphic Narrative and Illustration was created in December, 2009. Its three founders, supported by the associated comic groups and officially sponsored by the Exportation Promotion Bureau (PROCHILE), have generated a series of activities to promote the development of comic in Chile and abroad.

NGI’s first major activity, which was carried out in 2010, was directly related to the study of Graphic Narrative, . For this research, a sociologist followed up the workshops and international meetings held at the end of that year in order to determine the characterization of NGI platform users, their needs, motivations and reasons to participate in the graphic narrative area.

The Chilean economy emphasizes trade and investment and is recognized around the world for openness and stability.

About Chilean Graphic Narrative The Chilean Graphic Narrative has a long history. Its first character, Von Pilsener, was published in 1906. Over time, the local comic production reached its golden age in the decade of the 50’s and 60’s, which standed out by the significant production of national publishers, such as Zig-Zag and Quimantú. In this period, many magazines that covered different genres and styles were realeased, such as Condorito, Barrabases, the Sinister Dr. Mortis and Mampato are the most emblematic ones of the Chilean Comic story in those years. After the demise of the comic publishing industry, selfpublication has become the most popular option of the Chilean graphic storytellers. The emergence of new and talented creators, along with the new self-publishing artists, are the best proof of the great time experimented by this two-dimensional art in Chile. Nowadays different Chilean professionals have entered foreign markets by participating in various companies and book titles of South America, North America, Europe and Asia. In this catalog you can access to many profiles of Chilean artists that have succeeded in different markets of the Graphic Narrative and Illustration in the world.

Thanks to this investigation, in 2011 NGI developed different initiatives to improve the skills and knowledge of its members. In addition to the Second International Meeting of NGI, the Association also released an Online Catalog with its top Chilean Comic artists members.

Mission ‚ Vision and Principles NGI Chile’s mission is to support the development, communication, opportunities, training and promotion of Chilean Graphic Narrative and Illustration. By professionalizing the industry and the work of its members, NGI generates innovative activities and workshops aimed at creating opportunities in domestic and foreign comic markets. About NGI Export Chile: Comicbook Artist and Illustrators Catalog is a project that makes the most of the NGI Chile activities in order to promote Chilean professional graphic narrative and illustration artists abroad. As the first stage of this project, NGI has created a web platform (in English language) that represents a list of the top exponents of Chilean comic world. In this website International publishers have the opportunity to contact our professionals interested in exporting their services and concepts. In addition, this web platform will strengthen the support network between NGI Chile, the government and private organizations involved on this project in 2012. This year, NGI’s second stage will be focused on the International promotion of its website through traditional channels and activities developed together with the Exportation Promotion Bureau (ProChile) and the Cultural Affairs Bureau (DIRAC). The catalog will be constantly updated by adding new professionals, as far as they start participating in the exportation of their services.
