Mikes letter
Welcome to this week’s edition of Direct Local Bristol. It was great to see High Streets buzzing again this week as we see more restrictions lifted and the welcome return to going down the local drinking whole for a pint and good old pub grub. However I think the return of local events may take a bit longer as we here the Bristol Harbour Festival has been postponed to 2022 which coincided with the 50th anniversary of the event. However it seems the popular Bristol International Balloon Fiesta that attracts thousands from around the UK and abroad is reported to be going ahead on the 12th August to the 15th August. I can’t wait to go my local cinema and watch one of the blockbuster movies that was meant to be released last year, but due to the pandemic most movies like Marvels Black Widow and James Bond. Finally thought for the week: Stay safe and shopping till you drop.

Your candidates for Brislington West: Jos Clark and Andrew Varney As you may be aware, last year’s postponed local elections are due to be held on 6 May, 2021. Here in Bristol we have four elections taking place on the same day: •
Bristol City Council (In Brislington West you can choose TWO local councillors to represent you at City Hall)
•
Mayor of Bristol
•
Regional Mayor for the West of England Combined Authority (WECA)
•
Police and Crime Commissioner
We hope you will vote for both Jos Clark and Andrew Varney to be your local councillors for Brislington West. 6
We have been a hardworking team over the last five years, with a proven track record of success fighting on local issues including saving Jubilee Pool (twice!), preventing the closure of Wick Road Library, winning funding for environmental improvements on Sandy Park Road, campaigning for the Brislington Greenway, and so much more. If you elect us on 6 May, we will campaign to scrap the mayor and restore local democracy. The current system has given too much power to one person leading to costly failures such as around £60m wasted on Bristol Energy and £12m on the failed Bristol Arena project.
This waste must end so we can put more money into supporting local communities like Brislington West. We want to franchise the bus system like London and Manchester so that we control routes, timetables and fares for the benefit of local residents and not shareholders. We want to scrap business rates to protect our high streets. We have been working hard to promote local businesses and make Sandy Park Road a more desirable shopping destination. We must act on the climate emergency, the single greatest threat we face. We fought the expansion of Bristol Airport and are leading the fight against the environmentally damaging Callington Road Link.
On 6 May, vote for Jos Clark and Andrew Varney to represent you at City Hall. We will listen to your concerns and fight for your causes. We have a proud record of local action and we will continue our hard work so that local residents are better represented. We believe in keeping residents up to date on important local issues and publish a quarterly newsletters, ‘Focus on Brislington West’. We also have a digital version and if you would like to receive it, please register using this link: http://www.bristollibdems.org/ efocus. Carolyn Magson, Labour Councillor Candidate for Brislington West on fighting for more sustainable travel routes for Brislington I am a keen cyclist and walker and in fact I didn’t own a car until I was 40, preferring to use public transport and cycling to travel everywhere. I now live close to Sparke Evans Bridge and the main cycle route into Temple Meads and beyond. I’ve used this route for over 8 years and during the pandemic I noticed how busy the path was becoming, I would estimate that usage increased by over tenfold and this seems to have continued. This led me to thinking about what I could do as a candidate to support other cycle and walking routes. THE TRAMWAY Cllr Tim Rippington and I got in contact with Liveable Neighbourhoods who had been speaking to two companies called Greenways and Cycleroutes and Meanwhile Creative with a view to getting The Tramway open soon to fulfil this need. 8
We’re pleased to report that the council, including Kye Dudd, Cabinet Minister for Transport listened to our feedback and promised to back these plans. Kye and Tim work closely together in transport across both Brislington wards and beyond. A planning application has recently been submitted by Greenways and Cycleroutes to open up the route with a modest amount of work required. The route is largely surfaced already, having previously been used as a large car park. The Tramway has fantastic potential to link areas of Bristol by allowing people to travel on foot, by bike, scooter or wheelchair, hand bike or adapted cycle.
OTHER CYCLING AND WALKING ROUTES. What’s more, together with Tim Rippington we have been also looking closely at providI run a local residents association and have ing better alternative routes along Feeder been actively involved in many of the local Road and beyond to support linking up other development proposals for many years, even areas of Brislington to the centre such as St securing £25,000 of section 106 money for Annes, by providing alternative routes along the local area. some of the St Philips area. I am now a stakeholder in both the regeneration of St Philips and Temple Quarter and within my work here I am actively feeding back suggestions to improve both existing and future cycle and walking routes, including for example improved safety and lighting. My co-candidate Rob Logan is also a keen cyclist and together we will make it a priority to improve and increase cycling and walking routes across this area and beyond.
We believe that electing four Labour councillors across both West and East Brislington will allow us to work directly with the council to bring a fully integrated travel network to Brislington so residents can choose the method they want to travel without current restrictions.

VOTE FOR SAMUEL WILLIAMS We’re making real progress. But what happens next comes down to you. Four years ago, local people across the West of England elected our first-ever Metro Mayor. Since then, we’ve worked flat-out to repay your trust and get things done. We’re creating 6 new stations. Connecting over 80,000 people to the rail network, reducing congestion and increasing opportunity. We’ve invested £100 million to help people get training and secure jobs. Delivering projects like the Future Bright programme which helps young people access career coaching. And we’re transforming brownfield sites. Sites like Bath Riverside and Hengrove Park in Bristol are enabling us to create jobs and build houses without using greenbelt land. This year has been amongst the most difficult in most of our lifetimes. But now, as we roll out the vaccine, we can build a plan for our recovery to support our local economy and help get people back into work. With your support, we’ll deliver the 6 new stations. We’ll finish the transformation of Temple Quarter and Bath Riverside. We’ll expand the Future Bright Programme to get even more people the skills local businesses want so they can get well-paid jobs locally. And we’ll secure more investment for every part of our region. More jobs. More homes. More investment. On Thursday 6th May, vote for me and together we’ll make it happen.
ON 6TH MAY VOTE SAMUEL WILLIAMS FOR WEST OF ENGLAND MAYOR Prepared by Max Hopfl on behalf of Samuel Williams, both of, 5 Westfield Park, Bristol, BS6 6LT. 10

Castle Park plans unveiled New plans to redevelop a derelict area of the city and reinstate streets lost during the Blitz have been released. The three empty buildings at Castle Park in Bristol would be replaced with new office blocks, independent shops and restaurants. Developers MPEC said it has carried out "lot of community engagement" to ensure residents' views were taken into consideration. The Friends of Castle Park group say it is crucial developers "get it right". MPEC commercial director, Roz Bird said: “We’ve done a lot of community engagement and made sure we’ve taken into consideration what Bristolians would want to see here.
The bombed out St Mary le Port tower would also be repaired and the church opened up to visitors. The site was heavily bombed during the Bristol Blitz in 1940 and became a car park before being leased to the Bank of England and Norwich Union Insurance company for office buildings in the 1960s. There have been previous proposals to develop the site but none have yet been approved by Bristol City Council. The Friends of Castle Park group met the developer to take a first look at the latest plans. Member of the group Russ Leith said: “A whole range of really positive feedback came from that.
“It’s about bringing it alive, opening it up and making the connections between St Nick’s Market, Castle Park, the Floating Harbour and “It’s the most significant piece of land around the old city and it’s crucial they get it right.” Wine Street and for it to be a really inviting place.” MEPC is holding a public consultation on the plans until 26 April.

Virtual public consultation meetings are set to be held on 21 and 22 April.

With recent statistics showing that 3.2 million households in the UK have acquired a pet during lockdown, lawyers are encouraging owners to update their wills to cover the new member of the family.
“Everyone knows that a pet is not just for Christmas and it’s not just for lockdown either! Taking ownership of a pet is a big decision and part of that is considering what would happen to your pet when you die,” said Paul. “A pet can be left under the terms of your will and there are various options available. The most formal is a trust in the owner’s will with trustees given a sum of money to provide for the pet’s care and asked to find a home for them. This needs to be carefully drafted by a legal expert. “Another option is to give the pet to an individual in the will with a request that they provide a home for the pet. The request would not be legally binding so thought would have to be given as to what happens if the person can’t or won’t look after the pet. “The least formal option is a letter of wishes accompanying the will setting out how you would like the executors to deal with your pet. This can be updated without changing the will but is not legally binding, although it would have moral force.

Clarke Willmott recently developed a free, online tool called ‘Which Will?’ to assist people looking into making or updating a will. The tool prompts the user to think about what is important to them when making a will and recommends which will best meets their needs. The tool covers all considerations including businesses, homes and children and generates a free report for the user who can then go and seek further legal advice. Paul continued: “Our Which Will tool is a great place to start when thinking about making a will, we’ve compiled all the information you need in one place, meaning you don’t have to complete numerous internet searches. “Outside of wills we also provide services for drafting ‘pet-nups’ dealing with what would happen to your pet in the event of the breakdown of a relationship.” For more information or to use the free Which Will? Safe and steady return for Bristol’s events calendar
Smaller-scale activities lead sector recovery
A flagship event for Bristol’s unrivalled arts and culture sector, the Harbour Festival Breaking Bread, Bristol Comedy Garden and requires significant time to fully curate and the Spiegeltent will help Bristol’s worldprogramme of more than 300 artists and renowned events calendar make a steady performers, along with 200 visiting vessels as return from the effects of the Covid-19 well as preparing the large three-square mile pandemic this year. The trio of attractions event site. Jon Finch, Bristol City Council’s are just some of the exciting smaller-scaleHead of Culture and Creative Industries, activities being prepared and planned for by said: “The events sector in Bristol is one of organisers in Bristol’s parks and open spaces the most important parts of the city’s identity, team over the forthcoming months as the which makes the decision to postpone the city’s events sector emerges from lockdown. Harbour Festival all the harder. Bristol City Council’s events team are working closely with colleagues in Public Health and Bristol’s Safety Advisory Group to support the safe return of events in Bristol’s parks and open spaces, with events that adhere to government guidance and COVID safety planning being considered from June onwards. Priority is being given to Bristol-based event organisers that have a positive social and economic impact on the city, with bigger events not able to yet be fully confirmed due to the nature of the government’s roadmap plans out of lockdown The roadmap puts 21 June as the earliest that large gatherings will once again be allowed and means that test events need to be held nationally first before further large-event guidance can be produced. As a result, Bristol Harbour Festival organisers have announced the event will take a break this year and instead focus on its 50th anniversary in 2022. With the restrictions leaving too little time to deliver a safe 2021 festival, the energy and focus is now shifting to using the additional planning time to prepare for next year’s once-in-a-lifetime event.
“We are determined to make sure as many safe smaller-scale events are facilitated and supported to take place this year as possible and we are also going to do all we can to make sure that the Harbour Festival will return next year to celebrate its 50th anniversary.” “The roadmap out of lockdown potentially means a very uncertain time for many of the thousands of events sector workers and festival attendees who live in the city. However we are continuing to support as many events as it can and want to support as many as possible to go ahead this summer.’’ Carly Heath, Bristol’s Night-Time Economy Advisor, said: The Harbour Festival is taking a breather this year, but we are still expecting many ticketed events to take place and we will support as many as we possibly can. “The events sector in Bristol is intrinsically linked to our night-time economy and as we safely emerge from lockdown we know how keen Bristolians are to get back out to enjoy our night time culture.’’ Bristol Harbour Festival is expected to return in July 2022 for its 50th anniversary edition. 17

Strategy to tackle violence against women and girls With almost 20,000 domestic abuse-related crimes and more than 3,500 hate crimes in Avon and Somerset recorded in 2020, independent candidate in the Avon and Somerset Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) elections, John Smith, pledges to protect the most vulnerable from harm if elected, including launching a Violence Against Women and Girls strategy. Recognising that one of the most important roles the police play is to protect the vulnerable from crime and to help those who are victims of crime, John will work with the police and partner agencies to ensure that vulnerable people across Avon and Somerset get the essential support they need if elected on Thursday May 6. He is also pledging to develop a Violence Against Women and Girls Strategy to improve safety for these groups across society. John says: “Recently, we have seen several very concerning examples of male attitudes to women in our society which contribute to women and girls feeling unsafe.
20
If elected, I would develop a Violence Against Women and Girls Strategy which looks at cultural issues in schools and the workplace, lobby for misogyny to become a hate crime and develop a strategy towards safety of women and girls in public spaces in our area including while exercising and during the Night Time Economy.” To further ensure that the most vulnerable people in the region are protected, John’s plans also include: Supporting victims and targeting offenders of domestic abuse: If elected, John will work with the police and other partners to continue to support victims and increase the targeting of offenders. He pledges to both reduce the numbers of these crimes being committed while at the same time increasing the reporting of these crimes by victims. Improving support for victims of rape and serious sexual offences: The Criminal Justice System is too often not serving these victims well. John is pledging to provide additional investment to ensure that all victims of these crimes are listened to, believed and supported, including funding Independent Sexual Violence Advisers and expert legal advocates in court to support victims through their court cases and providing specialist ad trauma-informed training within the police force.
Protecting children from exploitation including child sexual exploitation: As former Deputy PCC, John was part of the team to introduce an Avon and Somerset-wide specialist support service for victims of child sexual exploitation as well as Operation Topaz to identify and safeguard vulnerable children. He will continue to champion these. A zero-tolerance approach to hate crimes: All hate crimes should be handled proactively and fairly so that all communities feel equally safe. Avon and Somerset Police already work in partnership with organisations such as Stand Against Racism and Inequality to transform its approach to identifying and supporting victims of hate crime, and John is pledging to support this work. Improve support for people in mental health crisis: – Mental health was a factor in 30 per cent of all incidents attended by the police in Avon and Somerset last year. There are now mental health practitioners in the police control room to advise police officers and John will continue to work with NHS Mental Health commissioners to ensure that vulnerable people get the right support from the best professionals at the right time.

In particular, John will lobby for additional mental health provision for people experiencing mental health crisis and for police cells not to be recognised as places of safety for people in mental health crisis. Further commenting, John said: “Overstretched officers are often finding themselves with responsibility for some of the most vulnerable people in society, many which would be far better dealt with by specially trained partner agencies. Policing alone cannot protect vulnerable people and I pledge to continue to work with a wide range of partners across Avon and Somerset to protect those at risk. John recently hosted an online roundtable event with expert guest speakers to discuss policies on protecting vulnerable people in Avon & Somerset. These included Anna Smith, CEO of One25, Sarah O’leary, CEO of Next Link, Penny McKissock, CEO of Southside and current independent Police and Crime Commissioner, Sue Mountstevens. Elections for the Avon and Somerset Police and Crime Commissioner are being held on Thursday May 6. John’s full manifesto can be viewed on https://www.johnsmith4pcc.com/.

Bristol’s Home Cooks Create Outdoor Friendly Food to Help People Reconnect Safely
Some of Bristol’s most talented cooks have created a selection of homemade foods that are perfectly suited to picnics and garden gatherings in a bid to help Bristolians safely reconnect with loved ones as lockdown restrictions ease. The Bristol-based start-up, All About The Cooks, enables people to discover talented home cooks who are making and selling food in their local area. With over 30 home cooks now signed up - a number who are professional chefs who have lost work through the pandemic – they have developed an array of tempting outdoor friendly foods that are now available to order via the website. For picnics, items include freshly baked tear and share breads from cook Priscilla; to tasty quiches, perfectly baked flapjacks or an afternoon tea from cook Sarah; to dips and breads inspired by the street food of Tel Aviv from cook Ben, plus much more. For garden party dinners, options include artisan fresh pasta from Italian cooks James and Coco (former Head Chef at 1766 Bar & Kitchen); plant-based tapas from former Paco Tapas Head Chef David; Duygu’s roast stuffed chicken with an authentic Turkish rice pilav; a three-course spring feast from Sicilian cook Mariangela, plus more. 22
Says Founder of All About The Cooks, Claire Ladkin: “The rule of six is now allowing us to reconnect with friends and family, whether that’s in a local park or in our own back gardens. With so many talented home cooks living in this city, we’re encouraging the people of Bristol to consider letting them prepare your picnic food or garden party dinner, instead perhaps of relying on shop-bought, factory-made products. What could Covid passports mean for employers? With the government considering introducing certificates to prove immunity and the UK finally begins to reopen after months of lockdown, the government is considering rolling out Covid status certification – also known as vaccine passports. Employers have a legal obligation to provide a safe working environment for their employees, therefore Covid passports could help in discharging this obligation and providing the greatest level of assurance that the work environment is as safe as possible with reasonable precautions. While the measure has been highly contested, with a number of MPs already voicing their opposition, it could become part of a toolkit to help consumers and eventgoers return to some form of normality. But could vaccine passports also help businesses return their staff to the workplace? Some other questions that are still left unanswered are what about younger employees? It’s reported that all over 50’s who have been offered the jab have now had theirs; but what about the younger generation? When will they get theirs - and indeed, will they want it? There are also the critical employees for employers to consider. For example, pregnant colleagues are not able to receive the jab whilst pregnant; meaning if they are unable to work from home they should be entitled to full medical suspension. So are COVID Immune Passports a divisive move? Or could it give additional reassurance to anxious employees? If you need an HR sounding board for complex issues, get in touch on 0117 287 2477 or hello@duchesshr.co.uk 26

City warned over ‘Zamzam Water’ Trading Standards issues counterfeit bottles alert Bristol citizens have been warned not to buy bottles labelled ‘Zamzam Water’ that have been found on the UK market as the holy month of Ramadan begins this week. The city’s Trading Standards team have raised concerns over sales of the bottles following their appearance in this country and are urging anyone who sees such items on sale in Bristol to report them as soon as possible. Zamzam Water comes from a sacred well in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, and under the law of that country cannot be exported for any commercial purpose. Bristol City Council Trading Standards team leader Sarah Saunders said: “If this water is on sale in the UK it must have been illegally exported or not be Zamzam Water at all.
It is particularly concerning that it seems to be in circulation during Ramadan, when our Muslim citizens are especially devout, and may be vulnerable to such religious fraud. “In cases of counterfeiting, the perpetrator has little interest in the person buying the water. We do not know anything about the origin of the contents which could potentially pose a safety risk. “We would urge anyone who sees ‘Zamzam Water’ on sale in Bristol to report it to Bristol City Council Trading Standards on 0808 223 1133 or trading.standards@bristol.gov.uk as soon as they can.’’ Ramadan began on the evening of Monday, 12 April and ends on the evening of Wednesday 12 May with Muslims around the world observing a period of deep spiritual reflection and fasting that takes place every year.

NEW FUNERAL DIRECTOR APPOINTED
Leading South West funeral venue Bristol Memorial Woodlands has appointed Steve Begbie-Dilks as a new funeral director. Steve, 58, has 12 years’ experience in the funeral industry having spent the majority of his career in newspaper print production working for the Bristol Evening Post and Daily Mail. Since joining another local funeral firm in 2009 Steve has turned his hand to everything from working in the mortuary to driving hearses. His new role at Bristol Memorial Woodlands in Alveston will see him supporting families as they plan their loved one’s funeral and ensuring the day runs smoothly from start to finish. Steve, from Coalpit Heath, said: “I am relishing my new role with Bristol Memorial Woodlands. Coming into the funeral business later in life happened by accident when I took up a position in-between jobs. I ended up staying and working on the operations side of the firm for over a decade. “Now as a funeral director at Bristol Memorial Woodlands I can say I’ve had a whole new lease of life and I’m thoroughly enjoying working for such a wonderful organisation, where attention to detail and the best interests of the families we care for are always top priority.
30
“It’s an honour to support and comfort families during such a sad and difficult time in their lives. Helping people remember and pay tribute to their loved ones is so important and we try to make the process as easy and pleasant as it can possibly be. “I treat everyone with care and professionalism and always remind customers that they have plenty of time and choice when planning their special occasion.” Steve joins existing Memorial Woodlands funeral director Scott Walker. The woodlands is a 100-acre site just north of Bristol where families can hold a funeral followed by a burial and tree planting at the picturesque site, which is held in trust for future generations. Whole morning or afternoon services and celebrations are available for less than the average price of a cremation and there is the added benefit of burials being more environmentally friendly. Chris Baker, founder of Bristol Memorial Woodlands, said: “We are delighted to have Steve join our team here. Already we can see the way he puts families at ease and goes above and beyond to make each experience personal.” Outside of work Steve is a qualified UEFA football coach running a successful local Under 16s team. ONE-STOP BUSINESS HUB WITH LOCAL PARTNERS Accountancy firm Haines Watts has launched a region-wide partnership with local business services providers to launch a one-stop business services hub for growing SMEs. The Bristol office of Haines Watts, which nationwide is the 15th largest accountancy firm in the UK, has teamed up with a selection of business coaching, HR, legal and other firms. Together, the companies will operate under the one banner of Haines Watts Employer Services, aiming to support local smaller businesses going through times of growth and change, in a concept being rolled out by Haines Watts’ offices across the South West. Alongside payroll and benefits advice, legal advice and HR support, Haines Watts Employer Services will also offer employee share scheme design and implementation, coaching and masterclasses in executive leadership and management. They will also conduct comprehensive employee engagement research and surveys. Matthew Bracher, managing director at Haines Watts Bristol, said “Any business looking to expand or diversify will need initial and ongoing legal advice, as well as support around the people in the business. “Clearly both of these functions also bring financial implications into consideration. So, we’ve recognised the appeal of offering all these services to growing SMEs under one umbrella for a while and it’s great to be able launch this new service.” Among the partners in the Bristol area are business coaching firm Executive Edge, owned by director Bev Couzens. She said: “We are pleased to develop this relationship with Haines Watts. 32
“Collaboration and umbrella working is becoming increasing popular in the business services sector and Executive Edge is a good fit with the vision that Haines Watts Employer Services is aiming to achieve. “Business coaching is highly relevant as our economy pivots and we adapt and innovate to keep up with the challenges posed by the Covid crisis. “This new relationship is a great example of how we are looking to broaden the services we offer our clients, who increasingly look to one supplier for a range of business functions.” Mr Bracher said: “We’ve been considering this as an option at Haines Watts for some time, as when planning for growth in business there is often crossover in these key areas of accountancy, HR and legal support. “All of our carefully-chosen partners match our standards of quality and customer service and we are pleased to be working with them. “A changing business landscape, with an economy hit by Covid and with the challenges of Brexit, offers many smaller businesses a great opportunity to pivot and grow. I believe there is great potential for this holistic service and I am looking forward to seeing Haines Watts Employer Services develop. “It’s also pleasing to see the concept rolled out across the South West, as we look to increase our presence in the region’s thriving SME community.”

The Bristol division of housebuilder Barratt Homes donates office furniture worth £2,000 to Bristol arts charity The donation will support Gathering Voices in delivering arts activities for the local community The Bristol division of leading housebuilder Barratt Homes has handed over £2,000 worth of office furniture to Gathering Voices, a Bristol arts charity which aims to empower and build communities. Barratt Homes, which is delivering much-needed new homes at nearby Ladden Garden Village, in North Yate, and at Blackberry Park in Coalpit Health, has donated the furniture from former sales centres where it is no longer needed. Gathering Voices is an innovative Bristol arts charity working with children, young people and adults in the areas of music, mentoring, youth leadership and creativity. The charity's main base at ‘Factory 8' in Southville BS3 hosts music, theatre and community classes. Creative director of Gathering Voices, Nick Spollin said: "We have recently taken on an extra site on East Street, Bedminster, with the intention of bringing mixed arts activities and exhibitions to the local area. This generous donation of furniture from Barratt Homes has enabled us to set up fantastic seating, working and teaching areas in the new space to help deliver arts activities to and for the local community."
Barratt Bristol recently handed over nearly £27,000 to the UK's leading dementia research charity, Alzheimer's Research UK, its charity of the year. Together with its sister company David Wilson Homes, Barratt Homes also donates £3,000 every month to local causes in the South West as part of the company's commitment to supporting the communities where they are building new homes. Recent support included donations to local foodbanks which experienced unprecedented demand due to lockdown and the Covid pandemic. Ladden Garden Village is a new development in North Yate creating hundreds of new one, two, three and four-bedroom homes. Once complete, there will be a primary school, nursery and health centre as well as 32 acres of open space and sports pitches. Meanwhile, Blackberry Park has recently welcomed its first residents. Over 200 two, three and four-bedroom homes are being built as part of this new community. Pioneering mental wellness hub introduced at UWE Bristol
An online platform that allows staff to share stories about a range of issues including mental health, wellbeing and diversity and inclusion is being pioneered at UWE Bristol. The university is the first higher education institution in the UK to establish a dedicated hub in which users can share their lived experiences of a range of issues on video, as well as viewing stories told by others. It will also direct them to relevant online resources and support services in their area. The platform, called 'The Let’s Talk Now Hub', uses technology developed by Glasgow-based Frog Systems and is being introduced for staff at the university this month. Users can search by topic from drop-down menus of issues relevant to them. For each topic, they are directed to professionally filmed and edited videos of people who have experienced those issues, and to a list of contact organisations and agencies in their area who can offer help and support. A back-end, analytics function will provide UWE Bristol with real-time, anonymised end-user information, allowing it to identify emerging issues of concern to staff and to make strategic management decisions. UWE Bristol, which employs around 3000 staff across four faculties and a number of professional services, said it is launching the hub to help promote and support healthier learning, working, social environments and approaches that enhance staff health and wellbeing. 40
Jo Midgley, Registrar and Pro ViceChancellor, Student Experience, at UWE Bristol said: ‘‘The mental health and wellbeing of our staff and students is a strategic priority for UWE Bristol as we strive to create an environment which supports healthier learning and working for all. ‘‘The Let’s Talk Now Hub is a welcome addition to our package of holistic support, providing staff with the opportunity to hear about other people’s lived experiences and helping to address particular staff, wellbeing needs, such as the challenges of hybrid working during the pandemic. We look forward to rolling out the pilot scheme to our 3,000 staff and hearing their feedback on this exciting new platform.’’ Phil Worms, chief executive of Frog Systems said: “In recent months the nation has collectively found its voice through technology, with millions of people using video daily. “Speaking up and out is essential in addressing a range of wellbeing issues for employees and students alike, and video engages in a way that the written word simply cannot. “For those struggling with life’s challenges, it is vital to know that you are not alone, that help is available and that others who have experienced similar journeys have come through them. “It’s so commendable that UWE Bristol is using its influence and reach in such a positive way to support its campus community.”
