Spot hundreds of Santas on bikes riding through the city Santas on a Bike is back on Saturday 4 December to spread some festive cheer and raise vital funds for Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW) again this year. The bikers, who have supported CHSW for over 15 years, held the event virtually last year due to the pandemic. This year the Santas are back on their bikes and will be riding through Bristol in all their festive glory on Saturday 4th December. Event organiser, Oli Allen, said: “We're so excited to be riding in Bristol again and can't wait to see the spectacle of hundreds of tinsel-covered motorbikes making their way through the city spreading some much-needed Christmas happiness and raising important funds for an incredible cause. We'd love to see as many people as possible come out to see us on our brand new 2021 route through the city.” This year’s route sees the bikes leaving from Winterbourne Academy at midday and travelling through Bradley Stoke to Aztec West, then down the A38 to the Bearpit roundabout, a loop around the city centre via The Triangle and Park Street, then on to CHSW’s Charlton Farm hospice in Wraxall. 4
Tamara Downs, Head of Fundraising at Charlton Farm, said: “The bikers’ fabulous fundraising and the awareness raised helps us to continue to offer a light in the dark to families with children with life-limiting conditions - not just over Christmas but 365 days a year. Their support makes such a difference in helping children and families create special memories at the children’s hospice. We can’t thank them enough for their continued support.” Due to the safety and protection of vulnerable children and their families, the bikers can’t stop at the children’s hospice to celebrate their finish this year, instead they will drive by the hospice and finish at the Downs Preparatory School, who have kindly stepped in and allowed the ride to finish in the school’s grounds. More information about this event can be found at www.santasonabike.org.uk or on the Facebook page at: www.facebook.com/santasonabike

BRISTOL’S MODERN SEA-FARING LINKS CELEBRATED
The Captain and members of the crew of aircraft carrier HMS PRINCE OF WALES will be visiting Bristol in December to mark the ship’s affiliation with the city.
Mrs Peaches Golding OBE, Her Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of Bristol, who represents the Queen in the city, leads the affiliation with HMS PRINCE OF WALES.
The Navy’s 65,000-tonne warship is too large to visit its affiliated port of Bristol but Captain Steve Higham will lead a delegation from the ship to take part in a number of activities around the city's Floating Harbour to forge close links with the people and businesses of Bristol.
She said: “Bristol is a sea-faring city and we must ensure that our maritime traditions are not all about the magnificent past. This association with the most magnificent ship in the Royal Navy keeps alive Bristol’s links with the sea and our wonderful Royal Navy.
Events will include a dinner on board the SS Great Britain; a business event at Ashton Gate Stadium; visits to Roll-Royce and Aerospace Bristol Concorde Museum and gig racing against members of the Bristol community in the Floating Harbour. On Sunday December 12 a special Evensong service that everyone in the City is encouraged to attend will be held at Bristol Cathedral. A White Ensign flag will be gifted to the City and will then permanently fly within the Cathedral to mark the city’s close links with HMS PRINCE OF WALES. On board the ship the Bristol Suite has been decorated with iconic photographs of the city and it will be used to host VIP and international visitors that stay on board.
“There are a number of events planned and I am sure Bristol people will embrace the opportunity to meet with the crew and learn more about this brand new fifth generation aircraft carrier that is now ready to do its job.” HMS PRINCE OF WALES has a flight deck that is 70 metres wide and 280 metres long – enough space for three football pitches. She has a minimum crew of around 700, increasing to around 1,600 with aircraft onboard. Further information about the affiliation can be found at www.bristolaffiliation-hmspwls.com. Anyone wishing to attend the Evensong ceremony can secure a place at Bristol Cathedral through its website: https://bristol-cathedral.co.uk/whats-on/white-ensign Further information on the ship can be found at: https://www.royalnavy.mod.uk/our-organisation/the-fighting-arms/surface-fleet/ aircraft-carriers/hms-prince-of-wales 7

Bristol homeless drop-in centre receives £1,000 donation from local housebuilder Morton Meadows Thornbury sets up donation point for Wild Goose drop-in centre which has served one million hot meals in a decade A recently refurbished drop-in centre in Bristol that has served one million hot meals to homeless people in the last decade has received £1,000 from a leading local housebuilder as part of a £4,000 donation across the region. David Wilson Homes is supporting the award-winning Wild Goose centre in Easton, run by Bristol-based Christian charity ‘inHope', and providing free hot showers, clothes, toiletries and hot meals to homeless people and those in extreme poverty. During the pandemic the centre underwent a major refurbishment but continued to provide essential take away meals from a pop-up facility nearby. Now fully reopened, the Wild Goose is back to full capacity with a fresh and inviting café and support centre offering free advice on housing, employment, health and citizens' rights to those in need. David Wilson Homes, which is currently building much-needed new homes at Morton Meadows in Thornbury has also set up a donation point in the development‘s sales centre to collect food and clothing donations from visitors and residents which the team will deliver to the charity. The Wild Goose centre has helped an estimated 10,000 homeless people since it opened in 2010. During the pandemic, when many more people were experiencing extreme hardship, the Wild Goose centre operated a pop-up food takeaway service providing up to 100 meals per day for those most in need. The £1,000 donation comes from Barratt and David Wilson Homes' Local Community Fund which donates £3,000 every month to local community causes and initiatives across the South West. Louise Ware, sales director at David Wilson Homes South West said: 12
"The Wild Goose centre provides a vital life-line to some of the people in greatest need in Bristol. We believe passionately in supporting people and communities where we are building much-needed new homes so we're pleased to be able to make this contribution to Wild Goose to help the team continue its vital work. Through our donation point at Morton Meadows, we hope to raise awareness of the fantastic work the charity does as well as collecting food and clothing to help homeless and vulnerable people in and around Bristol." Mick Connolly, Manager at the Wild Goose said: "At the start of the pandemic the Centre underwent a major refurbishment. We vacated the building but continued to provide essential take away meals from a pop-up facility. Against the devastating backdrop of the Covid-19 pandemic and reduced restrictions, on the 6th September we opened a Covid secure indoor service, offering people some respite from the cold. The service continues to evolve consistently serving 100 -120 people over the breakfast and lunch period. We are now back to providing free hot showers, clothes, toiletries, fresh laundry and hot meals to the homeless and those in extreme poverty.
"Now, with a fresh and inviting safe space, the Wild Goose hosts partner agencies, health clinic/s i.e. GP, Nurses and other frontline services, in providing health support and free advice to those rough sleeping on homelessness/housing, employment, citizens' rights, mental health and substance/alcohol misuse to those in desperate need. Without the vital support from David Wilson Homes and the community we would not be able to support and reach as many of the most vulnerable people in Bristol that we do. So, bless and thank you all for your kindness and support." For more information about David Wilson Homes visit www.dwh.co.uk

Christmas shoppers beware over fake online reviews UK shoppers have bought an estimated 80 million items on the basis of positive online reviews only to be disappointed when they arrive, National Trading Standards has warned. National Trading Standards said consumer trust in online reviews is fuelling a surge in criminals using them to sell poor quality goods and services. More than half of online shoppers (56%) use online reviews as a main factor when buying a product or service and 67% are more likely to buy a product or service if it has a five-star rating, Fake online reviews are estimated to potentially influence £23 billion of UK consumer spending every year, according to Government figures. However, National Trading Standards found just one in five check the timing and spacing of reviews online – if lots of similar reviews have been posted in a short space of time, they may have been submitted by the same person or group – while only 18% look at reviewers’ activity history, which can provide useful information about whether they are genuine.
16
Some 97% of shoppers using online reviews do not use browser plug-ins such as Fakespot and ReviewMeta to detect bogus reviews. The Competition and Markets Authority is currently leading an investigation into fake reviews, which includes a formal probe into Amazon and Google over concerns they have not been doing enough to combat fake reviews on their sites. It follows action taken by the last year over the trading of fake reviews, which resulted in Facebook, Instagram and eBay removing groups and banning individuals for buying and selling fake reviews on their sites. National Trading Standards e-Crime team national co-ordinator Mike Andrews said in a statement online: “Bogus online reviews damage legitimate businesses and prop up those seeking to make a fast buck by selling shoddy goods.
“Many of those we surveyed said they felt deceived, conned and tricked after unwittingly falling for the fakes, often only realising the reviews were suspicious when it was too late.
Timing and spacing. Check for multiple similar reviews that have been uploaded within a few minutes or hours.
“We urge those doing their Christmas shopping online to look out for fake online reviews and avoid being left out of pocket by using our tips.”
Reviewer’s history. Check the reviewer’s activity – if an account has been activated recently or has only reviewed a narrow range of products/services, this could indicate suspicious activity.
Consumer minister Paul Scully also said in an online statement : “Last summer we published our plans to make fake reviews illegal, and I encourage shoppers this Christmas to follow National Trading Standards’ advice for staying savvy online.”
Vague language. Legitimate reviews will often be personal and specific to the individual’s experience of using the item, whilst a fake is more likely to be vague, using generic words and phrases such as ‘amazing’, ‘awesome’, ‘buy this product’.
The Competition and Markets Authority senior director of consumer protection George Lusty said: “We know this is a big issue for shoppers, which is why we’re investigating concerns that Amazon and Google have not been doing enough to tackle fake reviews. But if you’re worried about being duped online this festive season, there are steps you can take to reduce the risk.”
Can you contact them? If a reviewer is happy to be contacted with questions, and is responsive, it’s a good sign they’re legitimate.
Here are some tips from National Trading Standards to avoid falling for fake online reviews:
Look beyond the star rating. Whilst a star rating of 4.5 or 5 can be a good indicator of quality, do not go by this alone. Look at the reviews too and check them against these tips.
Use a browser plug-in. They use artificial intelligence to analyse reviews, identify suspicious activity and suggest better alternatives to consumers.

How can I increase my tax rebate?
This really applies more to those in the construction industry, as with CIS they are more likely to get a rebate than other tax payers. So how can you maximise this? Let's start with why you get a refund in the first place. Those in the construction industry are stopped tax at source as they go along. Most of us receive a tax free allowance each year (currently the standard allowance is £12,700). So if you earned say £20,000 this year and all under the CIS scheme, you'd be stopped 20% ordinarily (so receive £16,000). How does this compare with what you should have taken home? well, £12,700 tax free, so taxable income is £7,300 and tax at 20% is £1,460. National insurance would be £1097. So in total, £4000 tax has been deducted through CIS, but the total tax and NI bill is only £2557. Therefore a rebate of £1442 is due.
20
The more profit you earn the less the rebate. This is because NI and Income tax are 29% and only 20% is normally deducted at source so there does come a point where no rebate is due or you even owe some tax as not enough has been deducted.
In order to increase the rebate then the solutions is to have a lower taxable profit. So how can we achieve this? The simple answer is to claim all of the allowances and expenses you are entitled to. Here are TSA this is part of what we do. We don't just submit tax returns, we want to ensure that our clients don't have to pay more tax than they have to. If you've bought a van, tools or equipment, then there is a good chance you'll be entitled to some allowances you may not be aware of. If you'd like to ensure you maximise your rebate, give us a call to arrange your free initial consultation and see how we can ensure you keep more of your hard earned money and maximise your rebate.

Show your high street some love this Christmas
Cabinet Member for Corporate Resources Cllr Ben Burton and Cabinet Member for Communities and Local Place Cllr Rachael Hunt at the Christmas lights switch-on for Downend High Street
The festive season is underway and shoppers in South Gloucestershire are being encouraged to consider local traders for their Christmas shopping this year. Our Christmas campaign in support of the hundreds of independent traders that make up our local high streets launches today (1 December). Throughout December we will be showcasing different traders from Chipping Sodbury, Downend, Filton, Hanham, Kingswood, Thornbury, Staple Hill and Station Road in Yate, as well as promoting local Christmas events and activities taking place. Shoppers and traders can help spread the word and join the campaign by liking and following our Facebook and Twitter accounts and using #ShopSouthGlos. We are also holding a Christmas window competition for traders where shoppers will be able to vote for their favourite display and be entered into a Christmas prize draw where they could win £100 in shopping vouchers to spend on their local high street (terms and conditions will apply). There will also be a prize for the most popular window display. On average households spend an additional £740 in December*. If just 20 per cent of this was spent in local high streets in South Gloucestershire, this would be an additional £16.3 million for the local economy. 22
Cabinet Member for Communities and Local Place Cllr Rachael Hunt said: “Our local businesses helped to keep our communities going through the pandemic and now it’s our turn to show them some love by shopping South Glos this Christmas. “Our local high streets have everything you will need to make this Christmas special. South Gloucestershire is lucky to have a plethora of gift shops, family-run butchers for that all important turkey, hair salons and barbers for those looking forward to that long-awaited Christmas party and lots of independent cafes, restaurants and pubs where we can meet with friends and family to celebrate. “The high street is changing and that’s why we are committed to running campaigns like this one to help champion the important role they play and to encourage people to shop South Glos.” Visit our website for more information www. southglos.gov.uk/shopsouthglos

Scrap the mayor!
Scrap the mayor!
Love Your Park Volunteer Awards:
One of our key election promises was to campaign to scrap the role of Bristol Mayor and so we are delighted to announce that we have tabled a motion to Full Council on 7 Dec calling for a binding referendum on the Mayoral system in Bristol. This system puts too much power into the hands of one person, who can ignore votes in council and routinely dodges scrutiny and accountability. Under the current occupant, the budget for the Mayor’s office has become increasingly bloated and poor decision-making (Bristol Arena, Bristol Energy, Brislington Meadows…) has cost us all dearly. It’s a system we can no longer afford. Let’s scrap the mayor, restore local democracy and end the waste. More details here: https://www.bristollibdems.org/motion-mayoral-referendum
We are blessed in Brislington to have so many wonderful volunteer park groups and individuals looking after our beautiful green spaces. Why not show your appreciation by nominating them for a Volunteer Award? Nominations are now open. You can nominate the volunteers and projects that help make your park or green space so special. More details here:
Focus on Brislington West: We are currently delivering our latest newsletter to every household in Brislington West. We believe it is important to keep in touch with local residents on a regular basis. Thank you so much to all our volunteers who help us with this task. If anyone would like to deliver some leaflets in their area every few months, please get in touch. 24
https://yourpark.org.uk/volunteerawards/ Intergenerational woodland walks: Older Brislington residents are invited to join the Forest School and Kindergarten for an intergenerational walk every Tuesday morning from 10:30 to 11:30, meeting at the St. Anne’s Terrace entrance to Nightingale Valley. We attended a councillor briefing last Wednesday and some of the proposals look quite exciting. Locally, the junctions of West Town Lane, Airport Road and Wells Road will see major changes. Have your say on the proposals for a new Youth Zone in Bristol Citizens are being asked for their views on plans for an £8.4m Youth Zone in south Bristol as well as the chance to shape how such a project would look. Delivered by the national charity OnSide, Youth Zones are a network of affordable, high quality spaces with world class facilities, specially designed for children and young people (CYP) aged 8-19, or up to 25 for those with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). There are currently 14 Youth Zones across the UK which are open seven days a week, offering 20 activities at every session. Facilities include a four-court sports hall, outdoor pitch, gym, boxing, martial arts room, music room with built-in recording studio, arts and crafts area, teaching kitchen, climbing wall, dance studio, careers advice and mental health support. Bristol’s public consultation, launched on 16 November, is an opportunity for citizens to tell the council what they think about proposals to build a Youth Zone in the south of the city, including the location, and to help shape the project at this early stage. Marvin Rees, Mayor of Bristol, said: “Our vision is for the South Bristol Youth Zone to deliver a safe space where our children and young people can go to meet their friends, socialise with others from across the city and be mentored by trained youth workers in a safe and welcoming 26
“The proposed site behind Inns Court and by Hengrove Way roundabout was selected as the most feasible location, which best supports the aims of the Youth Zone. Sitting on the boundaries of four South Bristol wards - Filwood, Hartcliffe and Withywood, Hengrove and Whitchurch Park and Bishopsworth - means the site is neutral, accessible and a welcoming location for all surrounding communities.” Deputy Mayor and Cabinet lead for Education, Children’s Services and Equalities, Councillor Asher Craig, said: “This is an exciting development for the children and young people of Bristol. The aim is to help young people grow in confidence, support their aspirations, and foster a sense of community belonging. We want this to be a space to build community relationships and to bring children and young people together who may not usually meet. Filwood ward councillors, Chris Jackson and Zoe Goodman, have welcomed the opportunity for people to have their say on the proposals and Councillor Helen Holland, ward member for Hartcliffe and Withywood added: “The South Bristol Youth Zone will work alongside existing youth providers in the south of the city and complement other regeneration projects for the area including housing, employment, public transport and walking and cycling routes.
“The views and opinions of local residents are hugely important to the success of this project, especially those of children and young people who will be using the facility. We value your opinion and will listen to what you have to say.” The consultation also offers an opportunity for children and young people aged 19 and under (or up to 25 for children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities) to join the Young People’s Development Group which will help make several key decisions about the Youth Zone, including its name and design. “The project will be transformational, providing opportunities for young people, and future generations of South Bristolians, to grow, work and thrive.” OnSide Chief Operating Officer Jamie Masraff said: “We are really excited about our plans for a Youth Zone in South Bristol in partnership with Bristol City Council and Youth Moves. We’d encourage all residents to take part in the council’s consultation and have their say on shaping the future for the city’s young people.”
The consultation will be open until Sunday 2 January. To find out more and give your views please visit the Youth Zone consultation page. You can request a paper copy, alternative format or translated version of the survey by contacting us via email at: jointcommissioning.children@bristol.gov.uk There will be further opportunities to comment on more detailed plans as part of a pre-planning application consultation via a dedicated website from the 6 to 12 December, and at a public venue close to the proposed site on the 6 and 7 December. The responses from this consultation, the pre-planning application consultation, and technical work will be included in a Full Business Case in late 2021/early 2022. A final decision on the Youth Zone will be made by the Mayor and Cabinet in early 2022 once they have considered the Full Business Case.

7 Simple Steps to Prepare Your Home for Christmas
1. Clear Out the Clutter Before you start decking the halls, set aside a day or two to declutter your home. Check rooms, shelves, and surfaces and put away the things you no longer use or want to display. Decluttering helps create more space for Christmas home décor and makes it easier for you to visualize your decorating plans. 2. Keep an Orderly Kitchen Christmastime usually involves a lot of cooking and baking, and an organised kitchen helps keep things running smoothly. Make sure that essential kitchen tools, utensils, and cookware are thoroughly clean and within easy reach. Check that your oven, stove, microwave, food processor, and dishwasher are in good working condition, and repair or replace any faulty appliance before you need to use it. Scan your fridge and dispose of stale or expired items to make room for freezer-friendly treats that you can make ahead of time. 3. Set Up the Celebration Space We all know that this year will be a little different than Christmases past. While this may put a damper on your usual holiday traditions, you should still make the most out of the situation by preparing for Christmas 2020. 30
Whether it’s the living room, dining room, or den, choose a designated space for your holiday backdrop. Assess your area and find the perfect spot for your Christmas tree. Don’t hesitate to rearrange, replace, or remove furniture to give your seasonal centerpiece the space it deserves. christmas tree set up beside mantel with wreath and garland The mantel is often a focal point for Christmas décor. Prior to decorating, make sure your fireplace has been properly cleared of ash and soot. While a warm glow from a fire is great for the Yuletide season, it can often be a chore to monitor the fire constantly. Consider setting up a fireplace screen for added safety and an extra touch of style. If you’re looking for more ways to dress up your home, you’ll find many Christmas preparation ideas and stunning inspiration from these elegant Christmas decorating themes. 4. Inspect Your Christmas Tree Decorating Christmas trees are on top of every Christmas to-do list. Whether you plan to re-use your current artificial Christmas tree or buy a new one, it’s always a good idea to inspect it a few weeks before setting it up.
Look for loose branches or wires and make sure all the lights are working properly. Checking early gives you time to troubleshoot or request replacement parts. Do the same for your Christmas greenery such as wreaths, garlands, or swags.
6. Make it Warm and Cozy A cozy Christmas house provides welcome relief from the hectic holiday pace. Create a relaxing atmosphere with flameless candles. Arrange them on the mantel, coffee table, or any space you want to add a warm ambience.
Examine your ornaments and other decorations to make sure they are complete and intact. Depending on your decorating theme, you may want to purchase new ornaments to add to your existing collection.
For texture, drape a plush throw blanket over your couch or dress up your Christmas tree with a lush tree skirt. Decorate corners and walls to spread holiday cheer throughout your home.
5. Be Ready to Entertain While at home on Christmas Day, preparations are needed to make your celebrations extra special. Plan ahead on what dishes to serve as well as your table decorations. Stock up on everyone’s favorite snacks and holiday drinks.
7. Brighten your Exteriors Make your entryways more festive with Christmas wreaths and decorations. Christmas house lights will do wonders to brighten outdoor spaces and prepare your home for Christmas.
Pay attention to the details that will make your set up beautiful and unique. Make sure to use suitable plates, cutlery, glasses, and even serving stands and bowls.
Flank your front door with pre-lit topiaries and arrange lanterns on your porch steps. Wrap artificial garlands around posts and railings or the door frame. We hope this article gave you ideas on how to prepare for Christmas. This year, avoid the last-minute holiday scramble so you get to enjoy what matters most—spending quality time with your loved ones.

Huge solar farm to be built on north Bristol
A huge solar farm stretching across 16 agricultural fields north of Bristol has been granted planning permission despite fears about flooding and road safety. South Gloucestershire councillors voted unanimously to approve the development between Wickwar and Bagstone, which will power about 15,000 homes with renewable energy and operate for 40 years before being returned to farmland. Objectors, who included three parish councils and 35 residents, told the development management committee that access to the 68-hectare (167-acre) site for construction traffic was on a dangerous bend with poor visibility on the B4058 and that Ladden Brook regularly flooded. Resident Ed Dixon told the meeting on Thursday, 25th November: “This scheme is massive in scale and equivalent to nearly 2,000 houses.”
But the application from Rag Lane Solar for land at Newlands Farm, West End, received 13 letters of support and planning agent Nick Beddoe told members it would offset 21,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions a year. Mr Beddoe said there would be extensive planting of wildflowers and 1.7km of hedgerows, as well as new habitats for wildlife. He said sheep could continue to graze and all public rights of way would remain open and be improved. “The proposals are fully compliant with national and local planning policy and would make a remarkable contribution to tackling climate change,” Mr Bleddoe added. “Solar panels are the way to go” South Gloucestershire Council development manager Marie Bath said: “In terms of flooding, officers raise no objection to this scheme on the basis that swales that will be introduced will reduce overall runoff, so it will improve the flooding situation.”
He said the impact on the landscape would make the experience for people who used rights of way across the fields “much poorer and potentially hazardous”, while horse riders She said there were no objections from also objected because of concerns about how landscape, planning, drainage, public rights the bridleway would be affected. of way, conservation or ecology officers. Councillor insists flooding could be an issue Councillor Adrian Rush told members: “You have to look at it and think this is a great lump of land being taken up by a solar farm.” He said flooding was an issue that had been passed over and that he did not believe the Environment Agency advice that it would not be a problem.
34
A highways officer said the visibility of the junction was adequate for the speed of traffic and that a construction management plan for the 26 weeks it would take to build would ensure lorries would not travel through villages or cover nearby roads in mud. Councillor Ernie Brown said: “Solar panels are the way to go. It’s not something new, it’s something we need.” The site is bounded to the west by the B4058 Bristol/Bagstone Road and to the east by Rag Lane, while Cowship Lane is further north.

The Christmas decorations that reduce the chance of selling your home Can Christmas decorations reduce your chances of selling your home? Unfortunately, the answer is yes. Although a bit of festive cheer has never harmed a house sale, there are several big nos where it comes to decorating fro Christmas if you're also conducting home viewings. If you want to find how to sell a house faster around Christmas time, follow these tips on decorations to avoid. 1. COLORED, FLASHING LIGHTS Fairy lights make your home more attractive during the dark season, but careful when choosing them. Estate agents warn that ‘colored, flashing lights aren’t everyone’s preference, and whilst some like the spirit they bring, they can put people off.’ Top tip is to ‘opt for a more tailored and sophisticated palette with white lights. This creates a more neutral, all-round aesthetic appealing to more.’ The best Christmas lights are always the more neutral ones if you want to sell. 2. LARGE EXTERIOR DECORATIONS That inflatable Santa needs to go, sadly, if you want to sell. Agents advice is clear: ‘avoid the large inflatable decorations or reindeer on the roof.’ Instead, ‘keep it classy with a single welcoming door wreath or holly and ivy. Less is more when it comes to exterior decorations, especially if you have a for-sale sign in the garden.’
36
3. DECOR THAT COVERS UP ATTRACTIVE STRUCTURAL ELEMENTS OF YOUR HOME If you have so many decorations up that people can’t actually see the shape of the house, or are unable to make out attractive timber beams on your ceiling, you’re in trouble. Be mindful of covering up ‘any structure or feature in your home which may be of interest to potential buyers. This could be something as simple as an oak stair rail or the mantelpiece. Remember: less is more.’ 4. WINDOW DECORATIONS THAT BLOCK OUT NATURAL LIGHT Christmas window displays can look great, but if they take up all of your windows, your home will feel dark and dingy. Natural light is essential for viewings, so make sure your decorating efforts don’t block any natural light.’ he also advises being mindful of not blocking out natural light with your Christmas tree – ‘try placing your holiday pride away from any windows, and if you must, make sure the natural light still flows in.’ 5. LOUD DECORATIONS ON A NEIGHBOR’S HOME This one is trickier than the others to resolve, but ‘unfortunately it’s not just your own decorations that can put buyers off, it’s your neighbors’ too. Neighbors are a huge part for people moving house, and to see loud and garish decorations next door could certainly put potential buyers off.’ This may or may not work, but ‘If you know your neighbours well, perhaps just let them know you are trying to sell over the festive period and to be mindful of potential buyers.’

LEADING INTEGRATIVE CANCER CHARITY WELCOMES TWO NEW TRUSTEES Penny Brohn UK has announced the appointment of two new members to its Board of Trustees. The appointees are Dr Penny Kechagioglou, consultant clinical oncologist, and Jon Green, former NHS hospital chief executive and operational director. The pair join at a critical time for the charity and will be helping to steer its strategy and governance as it pursues its ambition to make sure every person with cancer in the UK is able to access and experience the best of integrative cancer care, leading to better outcomes and quality of life. Stephen Rosser, chair of trustees for Penny Brohn UK said: “I am delighted to be welcoming two such high calibre trustees on to the board. “We will benefit enormously from Penny's experience as a consultant clinical oncologist and her passion for innovation in digital health. As co-chair of the British Society for Integrative Oncology she shares our vision to make integrative cancer care mainstream in the NHS. “Jon brings a really unique perspective. His experience as a former NHS hospital chief executive, and a focus on the integration of services - building those services around the patient - will be of immense benefit to our board.” Dr Penny Kechagioglou is a consultant clinical oncologist, the chief clinical information officer and deputy chief medical officer at the University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire (UHCW). 40
Penny is currently leading on the implementation of the electronic patient record (EPR) and digital transformation at UHCW and is passionate about enabling digital health through innovation. Penny said: "I feel very privileged to join Penny Brohn UK as a member of the board of trustees. The organisation has just formally celebrated its 40th anniversary and we all reflected on the huge positive impact Penny Brohn UK has had on improving outcomes for people with cancer, their carers and their families, across the country. “I am looking forward to working closely with the board and the executive team to drive growth and be in a position to reach out to more people who can benefit from our services, regardless of where they live or the timing in their cancer journey" Penny is co-chair of the British Society for Integrative Oncology with the vision to make integrative oncology practice mainstream in the NHS. With 18 years’ experience in clinical and managerial roles in the NHS as well as leadership experience in the private healthcare sector, Penny is committed to enabling equitable access to care and healthcare excellence. Jon Green is a former NHS hospital chief executive and operational director who has worked within acute and community services in London, East Midlands and the East of England over the last decade and a half.
Jon said: “I am delighted to become part of the Penny Brohn UK family and join the board as a Trustee. Having worked in the NHS for many years I see and recognise the huge strain that a cancer diagnosis places on individuals and their families. “I firmly believe that cancer treatment and management is so much more than just the clinical intervention and is about the whole person. I joined Penny Brohn UK because I want to promote this as widely as possible.” During his NHS career Jon had a particular focus on innovation and the integration of services and building those services around the patient. Prior to the joining the NHS he had a 20-year career in the Royal Navy as a warfare officer where he had a wide range of roles at home and abroad including sea going, intelligence and media management appointments.
This has included delivering service redesign services within Health and Social Care on the Isle of Man, support to a company providing hospital care in patients own homes and working with an innovation start up on COVID safety solutions for the UK and abroad; Jon has also been providing executive coaching and corporate facilitation to clients. For more information see www.pennybrohn. org.uk
More recently he has set up his own consultancy company providing support to other companies.

Two Bristol Charities Receive Boost This Winter
Two Bristol-based charities have been accepted onto the Big Give Christmas Challenge this year, which will see public donations doubled between 30th November – 7th December 2021, giving the people of Bristol a chance to make a huge difference in their local communities during the festive period.
FareShare South West and Bristol Hospitality Network are the two successful applicants to the Big Give Christmas Challenge 2021: a campaign founded by entrepreneur and philanthropist Sir Alec Reed CBE and one that has raised millions of pounds for thousands of charity projects since it launched on the Big Give in 2008. With this time of year associated with giving, and with the charities representing worthwhile causes, here’s a little more about what they do in case you are looking to make a charity donation that will have double the impact: FareShare South West FareShare South West tackles food insecurity and hunger across Bristol and the wider South West and does this by simultaneously tackling food waste. FareShare South West normally takes in excess of 500 tonnes of in-date, good quality surplus food (deemed surplus for reasons ranging from inaccurate demand forecasting, packaging errors, damage in transit or retailer rejections) each year and redistributes it to over 300 schools, charities, and community groups across the South West. 44
These charities provide meals as part of their services to people in need – such as children’s breakfast clubs, day clubs for older people, domestic violence refuges, homeless shelters and drug and alcohol rehab units. However, since March 2020, the charity has redistributed significantly more food to meet need – including enough food for 6 million meals between March 2020 – 2021. In response to what is already emerging as a difficult winter – considering spiraling energy bills, the increasing cost of food and cuts to universal credit – FareShare South West launched FoodStock 2021. This emergency winter operation aims to provide a significant uplift in food reaching communities by building a stockpile of additional ambient food with the funds and infrastructure to deliver it in the coming two months. Says CEO of FareShare South West, Julian Mines: “The money raised via the Big Give Christmas Challenge will allow FoodStock 2021 to have even greater impact that we had first planned, and one that in the context of the challenges vulnerable individuals face this winter is absolutely vital. This operation has already proved more challenging that we anticipated, due to the disruption in food supply chains and the HGV driver crisis, which have affected our ability to get food into the warehouse. This has driven up the logistical costs of the operation but we are continuing to work with local and national food suppliers to ensure we have the quantities of food we need to get enough food for 1 million meals out to those who need in most in the next two months. We are also proud that the operation will include a food parcel packing element, which means food can also go out to smaller charities and organisations who don’t have the infrastructure to create food parcels for their end users.”
Donations: https://donate.thebiggive.org.uk/ campaign/a056900001txPCSAA2 Bristol Hospitality Network Bristol Hospitality Network (BHN) extends solidarity to people in the city who are seeking asylum and experiencing destitution. Destitution means going without the basic essentials most of us take for granted – being able to eat, stay safe, warm and dry. The current rules of the UK asylum system mean it’s difficult for some people to provide the evidence they need for a successful asylum claim. Because of this, they may be refused help by the state, despite their genuine need. When this happens, people are left with no access to work, no financial support, and no access to accommodation. One of the ways BHN offers support is through a Solidarity Fund. Anyone who is currently hosted by BHN, living in our accommodation or part of our host network, becomes one of our members. This is around 30 people at any one time. The Solidarity Fund goes directly to each and every one of members, to help relieve financial hardship. We aim to give £20 every week to support our members’ needs - whether that’s clothing, food, transport, or other essentials.
All money raised through the Big Give Christmas Challenge this year will go directly to this fund. BHN’s Director of Operations, Rachael Bee, says: “During the pandemic, when times were really very tough for our members, we committed to giving £20 a week in solidarity to make sure everyone had enough funds to support themselves. We want to continue this into the new year and beyond, as we see the continued pressures our members are facing, and how much difference the Solidarity Fund can make. What's great about the fund is that members can spend it on the things they need the most, that will make the most difference. All donations given this Christmas will help us to keep the fund running in 2022, and every gift directly supports support people's health and wellbeing." Donations: https://donate.thebiggive.org.uk/ campaign/a056900001tyx7lAAA To donate and have their donation doubled, individuals must visit their chosen charity’s ‘Big Give Campaign Page’ between 30th November – 7th December 2021. More information about the campaign can be found here: https://www.thebiggive.org.uk/s/ christmas-challenge
