After months of uncertainty, suddenly pupils will be dealing with new school rules, routines, classrooms, classmates, teachers and, in some cases, even new schools. To make their transition easier, here are seven things to consider if your child is returning – or preparing to return – to the classroom. 1. Talk to them about how they feel
3. Make sure they understand the rules
If they feel anxious or worried, help them understand this is perfectly normal, and that you and their teachers are there to support them. Although difficult, try not to share any anxiety you may have with them.
It will be important for your child to understand social distancing and hygiene rules and, importantly, why they are in place.
It is important to encourage your child to discuss their feelings about returning to school. This may require a difficult conversation about the pandemic, especially in light of the school’s safety measures.
Also bear in mind your child may be returning to a pre-existing issue from before lockdown – for example, a bullying or relationship issue, or difficulty with school work or staff – or they may be preparing for the transition to secondary school. Try to give them a non-judgemental and supportive place to share any anxiety. Younger children, in particular, may not always have the words to express their feelings, so try to find a way of bringing up the conversation without putting pressure on them – for instance when you’re playing with them, or going for a walk. This can help them to open up naturally and identify what they’re anxious about. If you are concerned about their mental wellbeing, extra support is available.
2. Pack right, pack light
Your school will have been in touch to let you know what your child should and (more likely) shouldn’t bring in – such as stationary, bags, PE kits, bottles and lunch. Make sure you have checked what they need, in order to make your child’s day easier. It is important to be aware that neither children nor staff are recommended to attend school in PPE (ie, facemasks) as government guidance has outlined that misuse might add
6
Your school will have also been in touch to explain the various new procedures in place – such as the class ‘bubbles’ and hand washing routines. If you haven’t received this information or are unsure what the rules are, you should contact the school office.
This potentially includes being distanced from friends or siblings throughout their school day, which may be hard to understand but important to accept. Make sure you read all school communications with your child and make sure they are prepared, so it is not a shock when they enter the school gates.
4. And make sure you know the rules too You’ll need to know where and when to drop them off and pick them up, as well as what parts of the school you can access.
Your child will be eagerly expecting you at collection time, so make sure you, or whoever is collecting them, are there for them, in the right place at the right time.
5. End of day emotions – don’t push them For younger children in particular, a school day can require a lot of self-regulation or compressed behaviour, which can lead to tired and emotional outbursts later on in the day. Given the length of the lockdown and the new school safety rules in place, these emotions may be hard to cope with when they return.
It is a good idea to keep this in mind, and allow for some ‘letting off steam’. Your instinct may be to ask about their day, but be aware that your child may prefer to simply unwind.
6. But stay informed
7. And get some rest...
Your family may have been getting used to some rather unusual hours during lockdown and that may have extended into the summer holidays.
Given the long absence from school, there may be a difficult period of readjustment. There may be fresh challenges for your child, from working with new classmates and teachers, to coping with their work and observing the rules.
Make sure they are getting a good night’s sleep for their return to school. It might mean introducing some earlier bedtimes than they have had recently, but a good night’s rest will help them cope with the return to school and the new routines they will be adapting to.
Try to stay informed about how they are getting on – but if you are concerned, contact the school office about speaking to the class teacher.
We hope this is useful in helping your kids safely return to school learning

Play Your Way across North Somerset Neighbourhoods across North Somerset can now apply to close their roads and enjoy a traffic free community event, thanks to support from North Somerset Council. Play Your Way is a council scheme which allows more children to play in their streets without the fear of traffic. Using the principles of the national Playing Out organisation, Play Your Way aims to improve the health and wellbeing of children and families, reduce social isolation for residents that live alone and empower residents to create a more cohesive neighbourhood. And people across North Somerset have already started enjoying the benefits of Play Your Way.
“As well as helping people get more active in a traffic free space and all the benefits exercise brings, this type of community reconnection will also help mental health and wellbeing by empowering neighbours to come together and reducing social isolation. “We also know that meeting outside is the safest option at the moment as the fresh air will blow coronavirus particles away. “To make it happen just go to the website or give our Physical Activity team a call. They’ll help and guide you through the process of applying for a road closure, at no charge, and provide approved signage for the event.”

Bristol man plots walks around London
A series of self-guided walks around London written by a Bristolian are proving a big hit with visitors to the capital this summer. As a result of the pandemic many people who might have taken a city break to one of Europe’s popular destinations such as Paris, Barcelona or Venice are instead taking a city break in London. This has resulted in a big increase in the numbers of people downloading free, self-guided walks from a website created as ‘post-retirement’ hobby by Kevin Abbey. Kevin, who started off his career at the Bristol Evening Post, before setting up the travel agency chain Dolphin Travel, which later became Bakers Dolphin with over ninety branches throughout the west country, says he has always had a fascination with London and in particular its history. After retiring from the travel business Kevin says he decide to share his love and knowledge of the capital by developing a website dedicated to exploring the city on foot. The website currently has thirteen individual walks around different areas of London, which as Kevin explains are designed to look ‘closer behind the scenes’ at places and buildings you might normally just pass by. 18
All too often we just hurry past places without ever really understanding the part they might have played in history or even acknowledging their architecture”. “The walks are not designed for people who simply want to see the top tourist sites such as the Tower of London or Westminster Abbey, interesting though they are. Instead , they are for visitors who want to learn more about the background and history of both popular areas, such as Westminster, as well as the lesser well-known areas of the city such as Farringdon, Clerkenwell and Islington. Two walks concentrate on exploring what is known as the ‘Square Mile’ within the City of London, which as Kevin explains probably contains as much history as you’ll find anywhere in Britain, whilst another looks at the fascinating area of St James’s, famous for its long-established and extremely ‘posh’ little shops, popular for centuries with royalty and the well-heeled, as well as its palace. For those who enjoy walking beside water there are two walks that follow the Thames Path, starting Tower Bridge and following the river through the once dockland communities of Wapping, Limehouse and into Canary Wharf, whilst another starts in Canary Wharf and takes you on an almost circular route around the Isle of Dogs.
A third walk with a ‘watery’ theme starts close to Paddington Station, and follows the Regent’s Canal through Little Venice, Regent’s Park and London Zoo and finishes at the famous Camden Market. Finally, for those whose idea of a walk is to combine it with shopping, there’s a Sunday morning walk that visit several of London’s famous East End Markets. Kevin was asked whether he felt he had now covered enough areas of London, but he said there were more to come. “Each walk takes many months of research, both to establish the most practical and interesting route as well as write the relevant notes on what to see”. As a result of the pandemic, I haven’t been able to visit London as often before, so I am now rather behind with publishing new walks”, he said.
“However, I am hoping that my next walk, which will include Soho and Covent Garden, two areas which attract many visitors looking for night life or shopping, have a wealth of fascinating history and architecture, which many tourists never see”. The walks can be found at www.mylondonwalks.com or by clicking any of the images.

New warning over social media scam which may lead to driving ban
New drivers in the UK have been issued a warning of car insurance scams circulating on social media. Cash-strapped drivers are being urged to exercise caution when finding bogus car insurance “deals” online. The Insurance Fraud Bureau (IFB) issued the warning as thousands of learner drivers prepare to pass their test amid a backlog of tests due to the coronavirus pandemic. Scams include “ghost broking”, where fraudsters pretend to be insurance brokers to sell unrealistically cheap and fake policies, often to younger drivers. The IFB warned new drivers could be paying out hundreds of pounds on what in reality is nothing more than a photoshopped piece of paper. The Bureau warned that scammers even use stolen personal information to take out policies which are then doctored before being sold on. Victims will find they are uninsured when they come to claim for an accident which can lead to thousands of pounds in costs and even six points on their driving licence.
.Stephen Dalton, head of intelligence and investigations at the IFB said in a statement online: “The last thing new drivers need right now is to risk losing their car for no insurance because they’ve been duped by a scammer on social media. “Drivers must carry out basic checks to make sure they’re buying car insurance through a trusted provider, or they’ll be making a very expensive mistake. “I encourage anyone who’s seen evidence of an insurance scam to report it to the IFB’s confidential Cheatline online or on 0800 422 0421.” Mark Magee, head of driver policy at the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) said: “As well as ensuring you have the skills, knowledge and understanding attitude to drive safely, having valid insurance is of the utmost importance when you drive on your own. “Check to make sure insurance brokers are genuine before parting with your money.” Tips to avoid bogus car insurance deals The IFB has shared tips to avoid bogus car insurance deals:
They may also face court, where they might receive an unlimited fine and a driving ban.
Avoid deals on social media or messaging apps and only purchase car insurance through reputable sellers.
The IFB warned the scam could even affect job prospects if drivers are left with an uninsured driving conviction on their record.
If buying through an insurance broker, check the seller is registered with the British Insurance Brokers’ Association (Biba). If buying directly through an insurer they should appear as a registered member of the Motor Insurers’ Bureau (MIB). Checks can also be made to see if insurance advisers are registered with the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA). The IFB’s Cheatline can be contacted online or by phone on 0800 422 0421.

£45,000 grants available to support community cohesion and growth Charities and community groups in the South and South West of England are invited to apply for a share of £45,000 funding. Sovereign Housing Association, working with not-for-profit digital fundraising platform The Good Exchange, has grants available for community projects that focus on community cohesion and growth within three miles of its homes. In Sovereign’s last round of community funding, All Yours Period Boxes received £1,759, which was used towards making and distributing period boxes to people who cannot afford or access sanitary products in the local area. Caroline from All Yours Period Boxes, said: “The grant from Sovereign came just at the right time and was a lifeline when we headed into the summer holidays. “We have been supporting many families whose children are not able to access period products through school over the summer break but whose period has not taken a break with them.” Rachel Peters, Community Development Officer at Sovereign, said: “It’s been wonderful to be able to support so many projects and it’s great that we can continue to support groups in the next round of funding.
22
“We are looking forward to seeing lots of great projects focusing on growing after Covid and bringing communities back together again safely.” Julian May, Head of Collaborative Funding for The Good Exchange, added: “Last year, every £1 awarded by Sovereign drove an additional much-needed £4.82 from donations and funding partner grants on The Good Exchange. “That’s why I encourage any community, charity and voluntary groups operating within a Sovereign area that focus on community cohesion and growth to apply for funding. “I’d also invite any funders who are interested in a collaborative funding approach to grant-giving to get in touch.” Applications for the second round of funding can be submitted on Sovereign’s page on The Good Exchange from 1 September to 31 October 2021. Out and about this week in Brislington with Jos and Andrew Meeting our new Police and Crime Commissioner: Last Friday we had a meeting with the new Police and Crime Commissioner for Avon & Somerset, Mark Shelford, at Hungerford Road Open Space. The main purpose of the meeting was to get police backing for a new skatepark for the area but we also discussed other issues including the problem of speeding across Brislington and the visibility of local beat officers and PCSOs. Regarding the skatepark, we are pleased to say the police are supportive of the proposal, which came from a local resident on Hungerford Road. We expressed the following advantages of a skatepark: The location will serve a huge residential area, both Brislington and Stockwood. The location is currently underutilized. The skatepark will promote use of this space and it could act as a catalyst for further improvements, such as new landscaping; a new football pitch and an outdoor gym.
For more information about the Skatepark, please check out the Facebook page: https://m.facebook.com/stockwoodandbrislingtonskatepark/ Callington Road Nature Reserve Open Day: This Saturday, 4 September, the Friends of Callington Road Nature Reserve will be holding their annual Open Day. There will be lots of activities to get involved in, including a nature trail, pond dipping, bug identification, bramble bash, litter pick and much more. Activities begin at 10am. Hope to see you there: https://www.facebook.com/groups/103 1156246932735/?ref=share Arnos Court Park Community Picnic: On Saturday, 11 September, the Friends of Arnos Court Park will be holding an end of summer community picnic, weather permitting, starting at 11am. It’ll be a chance to meet up with other local people and find out more about the plans for our local park. We’ll bring along our litter pickers as well in case anyone fancies a clean-up! Please bring your own food and drink and something to sit on: https://www.facebook. com/groups/718708475350789/ Scotland Lane closure:
The introduction of a skatepark will provide positive activities for local residents and promote physical health.
Unfortunately, Scotland Lane is due to be closed next week from Monday 6 Sep to Friday 10 Sep. This is to allow for repairs to be undertaken by Bristol City Council to the Bottom Culvert. Key milestone reached on Coopers Court A key milestone has been reached on works to deliver 66 affordable homes at Coopers Court, part of the award-winning Finzels Reach mixed-use community. Coopers Court, which represents over 20% of the homes being delivered on the second phase of Finzels Reach, consists of 48 homes for the social rented market and 18 for shared ownership. Together, these will contribute to addressing the housing crisis in Bristol as well as providing an opportunity for first-time buyers to get on the property ladder, particularly with Help to Buy equity loan scheme due to end in 2023. Works on Coopers Court, which is due to complete in 2023, have been progressing well with the foundations now complete, marking a key delivery milestone in the project known as Golden Brick. The concrete frame is due to go up in the coming weeks, meaning the new structure will start to become visible to passers-by. Coopers Court is being developed by Cubex, backed by Fiera Real Estate, for housing provider Abri. Sarah Trahair-Williams, associate director at Cubex, said: "We are very pleased to have reached this important milestone on Coopers Court, an integral part of Finzels Reach phase two. Thanks to a successful partnership approach together with housing provider Abri, this complex, once-derelict city centre site can be transformed into much-needed, high quality new affordable homes. Meanwhile, we are actively seeking future development opportunities and are looking forward to announcing some exciting new projects soon." Coopers Court is designed to have a strong identity and sense of place, whilst ensuring it connects well to the surrounding area. Significant investment in improvements to the area around the building, including new landscaping, pedestrian and cycle routes, will help create a more attractive area and foster a sense of community. The sustainable and energy-efficient building connects into Bristol City Council's District Heat Network and includes a bio-diversity roof amenity space, 94 cycling spaces and only four car parking spaces to help tackle the environmental crisis.
Michelle Hyde, Head of Land and Planning at Abri, commented: "I'm delighted to see the progress being made at Coopers Court, working together with Cubex and FRE we've reached a significant milestone in our journey. We're now one step closer to providing more high quality and sustainable homes in the heart of Bristol. "The mixed-use development will help tackle the shortage of affordable housing in the area; offering first-time buyers a great opportunity to make their first move on to the property ladder, creating a community for everyone to belong, grow and thrive in." Cubex bought the former fire station site in summer 2018 on behalf of Fiera Real Estate Opportunity Fund IV (UK), a programmatic joint venture by FRE UK that is exclusive to clients of CBRE Global Investment Partners (CBRE GIP). FRE UK is currently fundraising for FREOF V, targeting £250m of value add and opportunistic real estate transactions in the UK. Finzels Reach is one of the largest mixeduse developments in the South West. The first phase, which is complete, includes 440 new apartments, 240,000 sq.ft of office space including two Grade A office buildings, a 168-bedroom Premier Inn, plus a host of cafes, restaurants and a microbrewery across 30,000 sq.ft of space. As well as Coopers Court, the second phase, on the former fire station site, incorporates a 231-build-to-rent development, as well as landmark, sustainable 116,000 sq ft office building, named Halo, two thirds of which are already pre-let to international legal firm Osborne Clarke. 27

Is this the end of the fry up? New survey reveals young van drivers prefer breakfast bars and smoothies over a full English Young van drivers today are more health-conscious than ever before, new survey finds. The Vansdirect survey of 250 UK van drivers discovered that fewer than 20 per cent of young van drivers (aged 18-24) choose a fry up for breakfast, with the majority opting instead for healthier options, like breakfast bars, smoothies, and fruit. Overall, only 26 per cent of van drivers today consume a full English while on the road. Surprisingly, just 4 per cent of van drivers skip breakfast entirely. Paul Cox, Sales Director at Vansdirect, said, “We’ve long assumed van drivers are the bastions of fry up culture, but that is looking increasingly not to be the case. “Health-conscious van drivers are rising through the ranks and undoing a lot of what longer-serving drivers - who are more likely still to choose a fry up or a bacon sandwich have been associated with over the years. “For younger van drivers, this means prioritising a nourishing, but convenient, breakfast before a long day of battling traffic and door-to-door deliveries. 30
“We looked at this data in 2021 in particular as it is predicted that more than 350,000 vans (SMMT) will join our roads this year. In turn, more young van drivers than ever are joining the sector – and will soon dictate how van driver culture looks in the future.” Bacon and sausage sandwiches aren’t completely off the menu in 2021, however, with 45 per cent of respondents aged 18-24 choosing this van driver staple. The same amount would also quite happily opt for toast or a yogurt instead of a bacon or sausage bap, suggesting younger van drivers are now looking towards healthier options alongside their fried favourites. In fact, over 80 per cent of all van drivers surveyed said they would like to eat more healthily on the road. Below is the average van driver diet in 2021, split by age group: 18–24-year-old van drivers’ typical daily diet Breakfast: Breakfast bar or smoothie Lunch: Meal deal Snack: Breakfast bar
Snacks were a particular sore point for drivers, with more than half of respondents saying they would like to snack on fruit instead (44 per cent). Furthermore, 43 per cent said they would prefer to eat at regular intervals to keep snack temptations at bay, while 33 per cent said they would simply like to snack less.
25-34-year-old van drivers’ typical daily diet Breakfast: Breakfast bar or bacon bap Lunch: Sandwich Snack: Crisps 35-44-year-old van drivers’ typical daily diet Breakfast: Bacon bap or fruit Lunch: Sandwich Snack: Crisps 45-54-year-old van drivers’ typical daily diet Breakfast: Bacon bap or porridge Lunch: Sandwich Snack: Crisps 55+ van drivers’ typical daily diet Breakfast: Toast or fruit Lunch: Sandwich Snack: No snacks
Paul Cox adds, “Struggling to eat more healthily is a common concern for many van drivers today, especially as the job entails spending a significant amount of time in a stationary position. “Perhaps if convenient outlets, like petrol stations or roadside cafes, offered more fruit, breakfast bars, or smoothies at affordable prices, the health of our ever-increasing van driving nation could improve – and more would feel satisfied with their lifestyle.” Convenience (54 per cent) and cutlery-free items (42 per cent) are the main influences for van drivers’ eating habits, both of which come before taste. Sandwiches and crisps are the run-away most popular lunchtime choices, chosen by 64 per cent and 56 per cent of van drivers, respectively. As for other lunchtime staples, 44 per cent said they would eat a burger for lunch, while 33 per cent prefer a wrap. All age groups apart from those aged 55+ reported snacking frequently, with these older van drivers opting not to snack at all. Collectively, the survey found British van drivers typically consume 558.61 calories for breakfast, 693.54 calories at lunch, and 255.89 calories as snacks, coming to a total of 1,508.04 calories consumed on a typical 6-8 hour shift.

Popular end of life training returns due to demand from care professionals
A training seminar described by care professionals as ‘empowering’ and ‘informative’ is taking place again on Wednesday 15 September due to popular demand. The end-of-life care planning training course from Bristol Memorial Woodlands, in partnership with training provider Gentle Dusk, is aimed at care professionals and can be accessed for free via Zoom. End of Life Care and Bereavement expert and founding director of Gentle Dusk, Mireille Hayden, will lead the training which is open to care home staff and managers and other care workers who work with families every day. She said: “The programme of bereavement and end-of-life care workshops I have been delivering with Bristol Memorial Woodlands have proved extremely popular and we are now receiving calls from local care homes to book more dates. “Front-line staff and leaders have really appreciated the supportive programme which opens up conversations and provides staff with greater understanding and confidence in addressing the issues around these taboo subjects. “The half-day session is free and organisations or individuals can sign up and tune in virtually. Previous attendees have said the skills learnt were helpful in their day-to-day work and provided a positive outlook on end-of-life care planning. 36
“Bristol Memorial Woodlands started these workshops as a way to connect with others in the end-of-life sector and they are fast becoming not only a funeral venue but a leading voice in the death and dying community.” Bristol Care Homes has already provided its staff with the training. Tania Bartholomew, Group Care Quality Manager, said: “ Gathering information about our residents’ end of life plan is a really important part of what our care staff do. “This training explains the importance of knowing residents’ wishes, sharing those wishes with the right people and ensuring they are carried out with dignity.” Bristol Memorial Woodlands is a 100-acre site in Alveston offering environmentally-friendly woodland burials. Trees and wild flowers are planted around the plots where loved ones are laid to rest and the area is managed by a charitable trust to ensure it will be open forever for future generations to visit. If you would like further information or to book a training programme please contact Ella Abbott - ella@memorialwoodlands.com. COULD THE NEW DIGITAL DIVORCE PROCESS PUT AN END TO THE BACKLOG OF WORK AT THE COURTS IN THE UK
During the COVID-19 pandemic the UK Courts have been faced with a significant amount of divorce applications due to the pressure of family life during lockdown. The new digital divorce process, which is due to come into effect from 13 September, is set to speed up divorce applications whereby individuals can now use an online portal where the Court will acknowledge and process applications far more quickly. The online process is more straightforward and avoids technical language and legal jargon which in effect simplifies the divorce process, meaning a more stress-free divorce. In addition, far more divorce applications will be accepted first time as the online portal is quick to pick up mistakes. Family lawyers are getting to grips with the new technology and how to advise clients on the updated processes, but many, including the divorce team at national law firm Clarke Willmott LLP, say the new normal will be good news for couples, their legal advisers and the Courts alike. Chris Longbottom, partner and family law expert at Clarke Willmott, said: “The new ‘digital divorce’ modernises the divorce process and will help relieve the pressure on UK Courts and the extended wait times for separating couples.
“While it’s great news for clients, caution should also be taken. It is possible that due to the speed of the process more people could be tempted to move quickly and divorce from their spouse without careful consideration and taking steps to explore other avenues. “As the portal is accessible 24-hours a day, petitioners may do so after a heated row with their spouse whereas the Courts are only accessible during working hours with the traditional paper divorce process. Statistics show that there were in excess of 455 online divorce applications between Christmas and New Year’s Day of which 26 applications were submitted on Christmas Eve and 13 on Christmas Day. “Despite the digital divorce process simplifying the divorce procedure, our advice remains that all spouses wishing to divorce from their spouse should seek independent legal advice as there may be more practical solutions to consider, such as mediation, before seeking to divorce from one another.”
