In Memoriam Bristol - making its hometown return
In Memoriam, a new touring artwork by Luke Jerram will be installed on College Green, Bristol from Friday 1st to Sunday 17th October. The ceremonial art installation of over 100 flags, made from NHS hospital bed sheets, will form a striking display against the backdrop of City Hall and Bristol Cathedral. It has been created in memorial to losses experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic and made in tribute to the work of NHS, health and social care staff and volunteers who have given so much to so many. In Memoriam was originally commissioned in 2020 by the Arts & Culture Programme at University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust (UHBW) and Culture Weston. Since then, owing to the pandemic, this poignant piece of public art has toured throughout the UK and Europe, but this will be its first appearance in Bristol. In Memoriam now returns to the artist’s hometown as a temporary memorial for people to visit and remember, as Luke Jerram explains: “It’s great to finally bring the artwork home to Bristol. This piece reflects changing moods and atmospheres according to the weather and how visitors interact with it. I hope this artwork will create a framed space and moment in time for personal and shared reflection.” Additional support for the project is being provided by the Bristol Cathedral, which will be welcoming visitors to light a candle in memory of a lost loved one, as well as the opportunity to write commemorative messages. Throughout its installation on College Green, In Memoriam will act as a setting for a community programme of acoustic music, poetry, movement and individual personal acts of remembrance. 6
Anna Farthing, Arts Programme Director of UHBW explains; “In Memoriam is a tribute to the NHS health and care staff who continue to serve others during these most exceptional times. We could not have got through the pandemic to date without them. “Public art that is accessible and engaging provides an opportunity for the NHS and social care sector to engage with local people in a slower, gentler and more reflective way. This internationally renowned artistic installation offers a moment of contemplation for everyone that visits. It helps us reflect upon the unique personal impact that the pandemic has had – touching all of our lives – personally, at home, at work and in our local community.” The project is supported by the West of England Combined Authority Reopening High Streets Safely Fund to support the safe reopening and recovery of the High Streets following COVID-19 restrictions, as well as Bristol City Centre BID, inviting people back to the city centre safely. Vicky Lee from Bristol City Centre BID explains; “Our Love Bristol campaign invites everyone back to the city centre and all our amazing shops, restaurants and bars, creating moments of joy on the streets of Bristol. This is a great initiative from our partners UHBW. In Memoriam is a beautiful multi-sensory experience and will look stunning on location in College Green. We want to encourage everyone to explore, while also remembering to be kind, safe and respectful of each other’s space.”

Big Jeff announces first solo exhibition
This exhibition brings my world to life, shining light on things I find difficult. This includes love and joy and everything else. “I use drawing and painting as a form of self-reflection. A lot of my work echoes my struggles around feeling like I don’t fit into this world. Art for me The exhibition entitled ‘Welcome To My World’ has been about expressing emotions I can’t explain another way. These paintings highlight will see the unveiling of 20 new paintings my issues with hidden anxiety and mental alongside the first 14 paintings from phase health and the barrier these create. Art for me one of the collection from the artist, well is about creating space for myself and using known as one of Bristol’s best known music aficionados. There will also be an opportunity my creativity to find my voice. At times this to see the new and existing works online with can be intimidating.” Two years in the making, the collection features 34 artworks to chalJeff talking about some of the paintings and lenge perceptions of anxiety, which is being what they mean to him. experienced by so many after the events of The paintings, some of which have a musical the last 18 months. Big Jeff Johns explains: Prolific Bristol music fan Big Jeff invites Bristol to his world for one week, as he launches his first solo exhibition at The Island from 16th - 21st November 2021 which will be free to attend.
"Welcome to my world, the full edition. I’m excited to exhibit these paintings together for the first time and introduce people to a side of me they don’t know. 10
Big Jeff has also invited charities working in Bristol to curate events and experiences alongside the exhibition. OTR will invite young people to experience the exhibition with an exclusive event. Big Issue sellers will have pitches at the exhibition throughout the week.
Talk Club and Running Punks will both host events at the exhibition while Gig Buddies will invite their members & volunteers for an exclusive showing and meet and greet with Jeff. Signed Limited Edition prints of 25 and unlimited unsigned prints of each piece will be available to buy via his website www.BigJeffJohnsArt.com. Exhibition curator Lee Dodds explains; “The response to Jeff’s first release of this collection was phenomenal. Musicians, presenters and Bristolians alike rallied around to support Jeff on his first venture as an artist and many of the prints are nearly sold out. His paintings are uplifting and will definitely be popular with music fans and art collectors in Bristol and beyond. This exhibition will enable us to show his full collection in person, while also curating a series of events in the space, obviously including music from some of Jeff’s favourite local acts. We’re looking forward to seeing everyone at The Island for a week of celebrating art, music and supporting some of the city’s most incredible charities in their work.” For exclusive news and to view the virtual exhibition, click an image

Cyclists with disabilities raise £3,000 to support more people into cycling in Warmley and Bristol A group of people with disabilities and their families have raised £3,000 and cycled hundreds of miles to raise money for Warmley Wheelers, a cycling scheme that gives people with health conditions and supported needs the chance to ride a bike.
Joni, who has lived in Warmley all her life, started riding with Warmley Wheelers a year ago and says it has made such a difference to her, in terms of both fitness and mental health, that she wanted to give something back to the group by raising money.
Run by Bristol-based social care charity Milestones Trust, the cycling group offers specially adapted bikes and a safe, friendly environment to help people into cycling.
She set herself the target of riding 40 miles in a month by cycling the group's hand bike from Warmley to Bitton railway station and back every Thursday and an electric hand bike at the gym every Monday. Joni smashed both her distance and fundraising target, originally set at £100, by clocking up 42 miles and raising £1,160 so far.
Nine people took part in this year's Cycle Challenge, including Joni Pike, from Warmley, who has cerebral palsy and cycled 40 miles in a month using a hand bike from Warmley Wheelers. Judith Gordon cycled 1,000 miles during the Cycle Challenge in July, as a way of saying thank you to the group which has allowed her 12-year-old son who has special needs try out and ride lots of different bikes so he can start to cycle independently.
12
Joni commented: "Cycling helped me and lots of other people who need additional support to get out and enjoy exercise, especially in the lockdowns of the last year or so. It is lovely to see different kinds of nature while out cycling. It helps a lot with mental health and is good for exercise and getting fit - a win-win situation!
"Warmley Wheelers have helped me so much over this year. They even helped to adapt my bike to make it more comfortable for me. This is my first-ever charity fundraiser and I've never done anything like this, so I am really proud of what I have done." Judith Gordon, a committed cyclist who worked for national walking and cycling charity, Sustrans for 17 years, says the group has been a huge help to her and her son, Josh. Having always used ‘tag along' bikes, they've helped him find the right cycling solution to start to ride independently as he becomes a teenager, and means they can continue to enjoy cycling together as family.
Equipment on offer from Warmley Wheelers includes battery-assisted bikes, bikes with platforms for wheelchairs, recumbent bikes which places the rider in a reclined position, and a variety of trikes. They also have tandem bikes so that family members and carers can be part of the ride.
Judith, who got married during her 1,000 mile challenge month, even completed rides on her honeymoon. A keen off-roader, she visited various well-known locations in cycling distance of Bristol, from the stone circles at Avebury to the Forest of Dean. Judith says Warmley Wheelers is about so much more than just the bikes and equipment, "With so many mainstream activities, they can try their best to be inclusive but at the end of the day some people need one-to-one support and Warmley Wheelers gives people that opportunity.
The group is based just off the Bristol to Bath railway path, next to the Warmley Waiting Room Café. For more information or to book a session visit https://www.milestonestrust. org.uk/what-we-offer/community-projects/.
"It helps people to grow on a personal level, to enjoy a sport and not feel that they're different. I really want my son and other people with disabilities and special needs to experience the same joy that I get from cycling. Thanks to Warmley Wheelers, they can." The money raised by this year's Cycle Challenge will go towards running the project and maintaining the fleet of adapted cycles. Participants were invited to special celebration event and presented with a commemorative medal by Milestones Trust's Chief Executive Hilary Crowhurst. Speaking after the event, Hilary said: "Warmley Wheelers gives people a chance to get out and enjoy fresh air and exercise, to literally feel the wind in their hair, have a good time and to build confidence and independence. We are very grateful to the group's volunteers and to this year's riders - who are a Warmley Wheelers is run by Milestones Trust which supports people with learning disabilireal inspiration to all of us." ties, mental health needs and dementia in the South West. 13

Pumpkin & dark chocolate cheesecake
Ingredients
Vegetarian
80g Unsalted butter, melted, plus extra for greasing 500g Pumpkin, peeledand cut into 1cm chunks (prepared weight) 2 x 200g packs chocolate chip cookies, broken into chunks 3 tsp ground cinnamon 750g Soft cheese 200g Caster sugar 6 large Range eggs, lightly beaten 40g 70% cocoa dark chocolate, roughly chopped
Method Preheat the oven to 200°C/fan 180°C/gas 6. Grease, then line the sides and base of a 23cm springform tin Put the pumpkin on a lined baking tray, sprinkle with water and cover tightly with foil. Bake in the oven for 45-50 mins, until very soft. Drain off any liquid, then whizz with a hand blender until smooth. Leave to cool completely. Reduce the oven temperature to 170°C/fan 150°C/gas 3 18
Meanwhile, whizz the cookies and 1 tsp of the cinnamon into fine crumbs Mix in the melted butter, tip into the lined tin and press into an even layer with the back of a spoon. Chill in the fridge Once the pumpkin purée has cooled, weigh out 400g, draining off any water that has risen to the top, then combine with the soft cheese, sugar, egg and remaining cinnamon. Reserve 100g of the mixture, then pour the rest over the chilled cheesecake base and level off Melt the chocolate in a heatproof bowl set over a pan of gently simmering water, then mix with the remaining 100g pumpkin batter. Spoon into a piping bag fitted with a 2mm circular nozzle Starting in the middle, pipe concentric circles on top of the cheesecake, spaced 1-2cm apart. Next, working from the middle to the outside edge, use a cocktail stick to bleed the lines together every 2-3cm to create a cobweb pattern Bake the cheesecake for 1 hour 30 mins — it should have a gentle wobble in the centre. Turn the oven off but leave the cheesecake inside, with the door ajar, to cool fully, then chill overnight before serving

The unified organisation will be responsible for delivering the Beacon’s city-wide artistic programme, driving forward music education for the city, establishing a collaborative community programme, and supporting emerging and established artists and creatives. 22
Bristol Beacon’s new visual identity and website have been developed in line with the organisation’s commitment to be truly inclusive and reflect the city’s diversity. After revealing its new name one year ago, it commissioned three local young emerging artists – Rosa ter Kulie, Jasmine Thompson and Greg Keen – from Bristol’s Rising Arts Agency to work alongside leading agency Saboteur to develop an identity that they felt reflected the name and the city. Louise Mitchell, chief executive of Bristol Beacon, says: “A year on from our name-change, today is an opportunity to reinforce our charity’s mission to make a step-change in the city and ensure that everyone in Bristol is able to make space for music in their lives. Bristol Beacon is for everyone. We want to live up to the promise of our name and truly be a beacon for music in the city, helping to create the space and provide the opportunities for people to enjoy enriching musical lives, no matter what their background or circumstance. “The true potential of the once-in-a-generation transformation of our much-loved venue goes far beyond bricks and mortar or even a name. Our newly united organisation creates a unique opportunity in the UK and allows us to be a model for the future, working with our partners in schools, communities, care homes, and other venues, to support people on a lifelong musical journey – from school to stage and beyond.”
To achieve the ‘Make Space for Music’ ambitions, the organisation is also committing to raise £8 million over the next three years in order to help complete the transformation of the venue and grow and embed its work ahead of reopening in 2023. Louise continues: “Alongside programming over 60 gigs and concerts with partner venues this autumn, today and tomorrow Bristol Beacon music tutors and staff will be out delivering top quality music education right across the city. Our FLOW and Hope Creative programmes, to name just two, work with young people with additional needs and children in care to enrich lives through music. Just last week we began a new project for people with dementia and their families to be creative together and express themselves through music. These are not the things that immediately spring to mind when thinking of Bristol Beacon, but this is also part of our DNA and if we can embed this work as we build towards the reopening of the venue, the potential to do good for the city is massive.” Bristol singer-songwriter Lady Nade has helped launch Make Space for Music, having worked with Bristol Beacon since she was a teenager.
Lady Nade says: “I have worked with Bristol Beacon since I was 14 years old, so they have been a constant in my musical life. Their support helped me find my voice as an artist, as well as develop additional skills as a music leader so I can help others to do the same. Music is vital for our personal and collective well-being, particularly after the last 18 months. Bristol is absolutely a city that makes space for music, and we all want to play our part in supporting that vision.” Rosa ter Kuile, known as RTiiiKA, is one of the young creatives from Rising Arts Agency who worked on the initial rebrand project and has since continued working with Bristol Beacon as a lead designer. She commented: “The past year for Bristol Beacon has been such a significant moment of change – so I am thrilled to be part of the conversations and creative direction around that. “We struck on the concept of Make Space for Music because its just what I saw the Beacon team doing every single day, even during the pandemic. And it feels like such a natural fit with Bristol – we’ve tried to embody a spirit of energy, light, and life in the design. It’s not neat and tidy, but neither is Bristol! I just feel very grateful to Rising, the Beacon, Saboteur, Jazz and Greg for making this all happen.” Visit bristolbeacon.org or search #MakeSpaceforMusic and share how you make space for music in your life with @ Bristol_Beacon. 23
Out and about this week in Brislington with Jos and Andrew
New community notice board:
Pop-up parklets:
We are delighted our new community notice board is ready to receive its first posters! We managed to get the notice board free-ofcharge from the Environment Agency after they had finished their work in the Nightingale Valley. Andrew at Briscycle agreed to place it on his forecourt and even paid for its installation. Thank you very much, Andrew. If you have an event you wish to advertise, please pop your poster into Briscycle.
Andrew went over to Southville on Tuesday to check out the pop-up parklet on Upton Road. At the request of local residents, two parking bays were suspended for the day and artificial grass and garden chairs were laid out. It was great to sit outside, drink tea and chat to local residents and the organisers, a charity called Possible. If you and a group of your neighbours would like to organise something similar for your street, get in touch and we’ll make it happen.
Langton Road Bridge update:
Abandoned scooters:
We recently wrote to the Council for an update on proposals for Langton Road Bridge. The good news is, the city engineer is finalising the revised options, which will hopefully be ready for consultation shortly. Options include pavement widening, zebra crossings, one-way northbound or southbound for motor vehicles, improved cycle way segregation and/or raised crossing tables by the school. We have our preferences but we believe it is up to local residents what happens in the area. Of course, we will share the consultation widely when we have it.
We recently had an issue with abandoned Voi e-scooters in the Brislington Brook near Tesco. Unfortunately, due to the complex nature of river management, their removal wasn’t straightforward and there was a long delay as BCC, WECA (West of England Combined Authority), the Environment Agency and Voi discussed who was responsible and most importantly, who would pay! As this is unlikely to be the last time Voi e-scooters end up in watercourses, we have asked the Bristol City Council team supporting the Voi trial to work with WECA and Voi to ensure that there is a clear process in place for the prompt removal of e-scooters abandoned in rivers and streams. Such a long delay is unacceptable and a potential environmental hazard.
24
Brislington’s back lanes: We recently helped local residents tidy their back alleyway after an elderly resident tripped and fell over some bind weed. Luckily, she has made a full recovery. Unfortunately, since our clean-up operation, someone has dumped a huge amount of garden waste in the lane, almost completely blocking it for other residents. As these lanes are unadopted by the Council, the waste is there to stay until we can organise another residents-led clean-up. Please make sure you avoid dumping rubbish in the back lanes of Brislington. It’s not fair on other residents or the local wildlife, who use the lanes as green corridors. Keep Brislington beautiful!

FLEX WORKING REQUESTS MUST WORK FOR BUSINESSES AND EMPLOYEES Proposed changes to employee rights, to legalise flexible working requests on the first day of a new job, must work for businesses and employees alike, says The HR Dept.
Under the proposals, which were put out to consultation on Thursday, employees would no longer have to wait for six months before submitting requests for flexible working.
The SME human resources outsourcing expert has broadly welcomed a Government move to speed up the process of giving employees more flexibility around working hours and location.
In turn, employers would have to respond to requests more quickly than the current maximum of three months, and offer reasonable justification for refusing any requests.
But the company, which provides support to more than 6,500 SMEs around the UK, said the arrangement needs to work for businesses too. Arrangements such as job sharing, compacted hours, annualised hours or phased retirement may suit both male and female employees but may not be in the best interests of the business. The HR Dept suggested that smaller businesses in particular may struggle to absorb resulting costs of communications, contractual and policy changes. And it also raised concerns over productivity, retention and recruitment, which can disproportionately affect smaller businesses when compared to their larger competitors. 26
The consultation is part of the Government’s Good Work Plan programme, under which The HR Dept has represented the views of UK SMEs since it was set up in 2018. Stacey Mead, director The HR Dept Bristol, Bath and North Somerset, urged the Government to consider the implications for SMEs, which employ 60 per cent of the UK’s private sector staff. “My concern is the impact any new rules will have on the smaller businesses we represent in the Bristol area,” she said. “While we of course recognise the benefits to employees of proposals to support better work life balance, there are always knockon effects of new legislation and it is usually smaller businesses which feel those the most.
“Greater flexibility over working hours and place of work can of course help smaller businesses attract and retain the best employees,
At present the onus is on the employee to demonstrate how a change in their employment contract would impact on the company. Hopefully that will remain the case.
“However there are also costs to consider, for example with internet security, health and safety implications once the home becomes the workplace, new technology requirements and additional training requirements.
“Owners must take these seriously though, or risk tribunal – particularly if care of children or disabled people are involved, bearing in mind the potential for discrimination claims.
“There may be resentment from those without children towards the flexibility given to those without. In a small business this is hard to manage. “At an incredibly challenging time for small businesses in particular, with many struggling to stay afloat, changes need to be properly thought through before implementation in law. “Currently, the rules allow for rejection of a flexible working application based on costs, administrative concerns, productivity or recruitment issues. Will these be seen in future as justifiable reasons for refusing a request? “Business owners must balance an understanding that flexible working request laws consist of a right to request, not a right for the employee to have whatever they want.
“We are pleased that the Government is putting this out to consultation and The HR Dept will certainly have its say on the likely impact on SMEs nationwide.” Stacey said it is important to recognise the variety of flexible working patterns available: “Hybrid working – a mixture of office and home-based working – is becoming more common but flexibility doesn’t just mean where you work. It includes giving the employee more say over which hours they work, supporting parents with requests at school holiday time, allowing flexibility for carers, giving breaks when required, potential job sharing, and so on. “These ideas were first mooted in the 1980s. Maybe it’s time to redesign these concepts for the 2020s with SMEs at the forefront. As ever, it’s those smaller businesses which are least catered for in the national debate, even though they make up 60 per cent of our nation’s employees.”

Site manager and former ex-soldier to run London Marathon for disabled children's charity
A Gloucestershire construction site manager who suffered with PTSD following military service is taking on a new challenge by running this year's London Marathon on Sunday 3rd October to raise money for a national disabled children's charity. Trevor Hopkins, who is an assistant site manager for Barratt David Wilson Homes at Merlin Gate in Newent, Gloucestershire decided to support Whizz-Kidz, which works to transform the lives of disabled children, because he had worked directly with servicemen who have lost limbs or been paralysed and has seen what they can achieve with the right support and equipment. To boost his fundraising efforts, his employer, Barratt Developments, has pledged to match funds up to a contribution of £1,000. Trevor joined the housebuilder straight out of the army 20 months ago, having been in the military over 22 years. Barratt actively encourages ex-Armed Forces personnel to join the company, valuing the skills, drive and leadership skills that they can bring. The company provides training and development to help recruits transition into everyday life and build a new career.
I know from previous experience that physical training has helped with my mental state as well so it would be a win win. Helping these kids is my perfect tonic." Having not run for over a year and carrying injuries which have required back surgery, Trevor suffered a setback to his training programme recently when his whole family got ill with Covid. He adds: "This is not the best preparation and just another obstacle to make this marathon even more challenging. But regardless of how hard it gets, I will drag myself over the finish line! "The charity itself is amazing. Unfortunately, the NHS can't supply all the kit needed for these young wheelchair users which impacts on their own goals. Their disabilities shouldn't be a barrier to what they can achieve. I'm hoping with the support of Barratt, we can help as many of these kids as possible and make a real difference to their lives." Harlan Bevis, construction director for Barratt David Wilson Homes South West said:
"The pandemic has brought challenges for most people, but it has been particularly difficult for those transitioning into a new career from the Armed Forces as the social restrictions have made it tough to build new support networks. Trevor's commitment and dedication to his training are hugely impressive and we're really pleased to be able to help him towards his fundraising target. It's important to us to make a positive He says: "My end goal is to try and raise contribution to the communities we build in as much money as possible for Whizz-Kidz and Whizz-Kids does amazing work to help whilst at the same time trying to help my own disabled children become confident and physical and mental well-being along the way. independent young adults." Trevor is hoping that the training and determination needed to run the London Marathon will also help his physical and mental well-being. He suffered from PTSD in 2012 following service in Afghanistan and Iraq, and his recent transition out of military service during the pandemic restrictions cut him off from his traditional support networks.
"My darkest moments are when I am idle so when I saw Barratts were after volunteers for the marathon, I jumped at the chance as I see it as an opportunity to get some routine back into my life, outside of work. 28

Half of Brits want e-scooter restrictions More than half of UK survey respondents want electric scooter licences introduced if public use of the vehicles is made legal. This reflects public concerns for safety, according to a local Solicitors, which carried out the survey. One respondent explained that having an e-scooter licence would “regulate their use and mean [users] can be fined for being unsafe while riding”, while another suggested that because an e-scooter is a motorised form of transport, riders should “pass a test, get a licence and be insured as they may use their scooter more responsibly”. Additionally, 85% of the 1,000 participants think that e-scooter use should be age restricted, with 82% suggesting use should only be allowed for the over-16s. A quarter said use should be restricted until a person is 18 years old. The local solicitors say: “Up until 1 August 2020, riding e-scooters was illegal on UK roads, unless being used on private land with the landowner’s permission. However, the increasing popularity of this mode of transport meant that rental e-scooters became legal in a bid to ease pressure on public transport amid the Covid-19 pandemic."
The survey also revealed a lack of knowledge around the rules of using e-scooters, as 52% admitted to not knowing the related law. More than a quarter think that a privately-owned e-scooter can be used in public and 16% believe e-scooters can be used on the pavement, despite both scenarios being banned by the Department for Transport. “While the Department for Transport has published guidance for e-scooter hire companies, which included a speed limit of 15.5mph, there is not enough awareness being raised among riders and it is still uncertain how safe e-scooters are when compared to other forms of transportation, such as cars and bikes,” Powell adds. Elsewhere in the survey, respondents believe riders should receive the same safety advice as cyclists (93%), with e-scooter users having to wear a helmet (88%) and high-visibility clothing (74%). To prevent accidents, e-scooter riders should consider wearing a helmet to protect against a variety of head injuries and help to prevent injuries caused by collisions.
They should also refrain from using an e-scooter under the influence of alcohol and conduct safety checks, such as a visual inspection for any signs of damage and testing the brakes and throttle before setting “The rising popularity of e-scooters as a mode off. of transport for tech-savvy riders who want to get from A to B more efficiently comes with a The firm points out that riding a scooter during unique set of problems from a safety your childhood does not mean users will be perspective. Support for people with hidden disabilities Living with a hidden disability presents additional challenges for many people living in North Somerset. A non-visible disability, by its very nature, won't always be obvious to others and this can often mean people aren't treated with compassion and understanding. North Somerset Council is working alongside the four local town councils to change things and raise awareness of the issues using the Sunflower scheme. The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower can be worn by anyone with a hidden disability as a discreet way to indicate to others that they may need additional support, help or a little more time. Since its launch in 2016, it has now been adopted by many supermarkets, railway and coach stations, leisure facilities, the NHS, a number of police, fire and ambulance services, and an increasing number of small and large businesses and organisations. North Somerset Council is launching the scheme this week across all its public facing sites including libraries, children’s centres, the Tropicana in Weston-super-Mare, Somerset Hall in Portishead, Clevedon and Nailsea. The council staff working in those venues have received training in hidden disabilities and the types of support people wearing the Sunflower might need. People can also pick up a Sunflower lanyard free of charge at these venues if they need one. Cllr Mike Bell, the council's deputy leader and champion for disabled people said: "An estimated 1 in 5 people in the UK have a disability, 80% of them having a hidden disability. We're keen to make sure that they can feel welcome and confident using any of our buildings, knowing that they'll be treated with the care and compassion they might need. "Our staff will wear the Sunflower support pin badges to show customers that they've been trained on hidden disabilities and we'll have other materials in our buildings to show customers that we're supporting the hidden disabilities scheme. We're committed to making sure that people are treated fairly in North Somerset and this is just one of the steps we're taking to deliver on our promises." 36
Disability can make daily life more demanding and people are affected in different ways. It can be painful, exhausting, and isolating. Without visible evidence of the disability, it is frequently difficult for others to acknowledge the challenges faced and as a consequence, sympathy and understanding can often be in short supply. We are delighted that the joint commitment by the councils to train customer facing staff to recognise and support Sunflower wearers." Paul White, CEO, Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Alongside North Somerset Council, Clevedon, Nailsea, Portishead and Weston-super-Mare town councils are all also championing the sunflower lanyard scheme. “Clevedon Town Council is pleased to work with North Somerset Council to raise awareness of Hidden Disabilities. The office in Clevedon have already received a “Dementia Friendly Award” and is looking to enhance the services we provided to all residents.” Councillor Judith West “Earlier this year I was delighted when all councillors of North Somerset and Weston-super-Mare town councils supported my call to tackle disability stigma and discrimination. The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower scheme is a really practical way to support both local people and visitors who have a variety of disabilities. It also assists local businesses to benefit from an increase in visitors.” Sarah Codling - North Somerset and Weston-super-Mare Town Councillor. “Nailsea Town Council is very pleased to be able to join with North Somerset and the other Town Council’s in supporting those within our communities who have a hidden disability. We continue to provide a welcome and inclusive environment at No.65 High Street and the Tithe Barn. Joining the Sunflower Scheme will further support our ambitions for the town” said Councillor Mike Bird, Chair or Nailsea Town Council. Mike Bell added: "While it's great that us and the town councils are behind this scheme, I'd like to see more local businesses supporting it too. We'll be holding an online information event next month for businesses who want to find out more to help them get started." The business webinar will take place at 6pm on Wednesday 13 October. Interested business should contact dana.jackson@n-somerset.gov.uk for more information.

Award-Winning Baby and Toddler Class Booking System Launches in Bristol
Having focussed on launching in Birmingham since the 26th of July of this year, award-winning baby and toddler class booking system, Happity, are now bringing their focus to Bristol. They have been pushing to get as many classes listed on their site for free and, as a part of this launch, Happity will be providing Bristol with limited time offers. Prior to Covid-19, it was estimated that 1 in 5 women suffer with mental health issues during pregnancy or in the first year after birth (Royal College of Psychiatrists) and that up to 50% of mothers with mental health issues are undiagnosed and struggle alone without support (NCT Research). Post Covid-19, the NHS have stated this figure has increased to 1 in 10. These figures are one of the many motivators that drive Happity to be the company it is today. Happity’s co-founder, Emily Tredget, has struggled with Postnatal Depression in the past. With feelings of loneliness being one of the main symptoms of PND, she has been driven to help parents build a community around them for support and friendship, saying that Happity’s main goal is to “end loneliness for new parents”. She has experienced the benefits of attending baby and toddler classes herself and is passionate about connecting parents and class providers together. 40
“Being at home with a new baby is lonely,” says Emily. “Paradoxically you’re never alone but you sometimes have never felt so lonely. Baby classes are a vital way of combating this. They give new mums a place to meet other parents, to feel like part of a group.” Since their launch starting with 4 public beta postcodes in April of 2017, Happity are now listing over 8,000 sessions per month. Mostly being London-based in the past however, they have started to expand across the rest of the UK. They have created a location-based launch campaign, starting in Birmingham and now moving into Bristol. For a limited time, they will be offering baby and toddler class providers located here a free virtual admin service when they sign up to list on the site. This service includes setting up the class providers account and adding timetables. Following this, they also provide a help-desk with articles to help providers learn their “user friendly” systems. “They get it,” says Happity member Rosie from Foxtrots. “The system they have in place is seamless. And the site (once you're in your stride) is incredibly user friendly... For a nominal subscription fee, you get a wider reach, you meet new people, you benefit from some great marketing/promotional perks, you receive fantastic support and your workload is reduced. What's not to love?”
"Classes are so important for a baby's development," Sara Tateno, Co-founder of Happity says. “The repetition helps them learn, and being around other babies is so important for socialisation. They are also really key for a parents’ mental health as they provide structure and community." This is something that has been lacking during Covid, although Happity was instrumental in getting legislation communicated to ensure classes could return as soon as they were safe too after parents reported development delays and mental health struggles as a result of isolation. In fact they were nominated for a Parliamentary Award for their support to new parents during Covid. The offer for the free virtual admin service is available to any class providers in Bristol (regardless of how old or how new the class is) until the 31st of October 2021. To sign up to Happity, and find out more information about the launch click the main image on the left.

Your Garden In October Autumn is officially here! October, in all its glory, gives us a wonderful display of colours. The trees are beginning to lose their leaves in abundance as they become dormant for winter, telling us that the change of season is in full swing.
The days are much shorter and cooler and we can feel autumn chill in the air. Although trees are the stars of the month, October is time to think about how the garden will look when it wakes from hibernation.
PLANT TREES AND SHRUBS
October is the ideal month to plant trees and shrubs. Although the container grown plants can be planted at any time of the year they are easier to care for if planted in the autumn or winter. LOOKING GOOD THIS MONTH... Conifers WHY SHOULD YOU PLANT THEM? Conifers are hardy evergreen trees and shrubs that suit any garden. They come in a huge range of shape and sizes and textures and the colour can be anything from yellow or light green through to dark green and blue. Easy to care for and long lasting, conifers are the ideal choice for any gardener looking for a low maintenance but high impact plant.
HOW SHOULD YOU PLANT THEM?
Dwarf conifers are good for containers and larger shrubs and trees make good hedging or garden features. They are happy in any soil in the sun or shade. Newly planted conifers will need watering until established.. After flowering, sheer back dead flower stems to keep the plant looking full.
