Bristol-based conservation charity, Wildscreen, has launched its latest flagship initiative, the inaugural Wildscreen Storytelling Internship Schem The scheme, which has the backing of WWF-UK, will provide paid internship opportunities for six UK-based and six internationally-based 18-25 year olds, wanting to pursue careers in natural world storytelling and content creation within the TV and Conservation Fromsectors.Autumn

As well as being provided with the opportunity to gain valuable ‘hands-on’ professional skills and experience, the cohort will also benefit from one-to-one mentoring within the host organisations and one-year's membership to the Wildscreen Network, the world’s biggest professional community for the wildlife film and TV genre, to help launch their careers in the natural world storytelling industries.

2022, 12 internationally renowned wildlife TV production companies and Conservation NGOs will open their doors to aspiring storytellers and content creators, providing paid, practical experience across a variety of roles spanning camera operating to editing, from story development to scriptwriting.

Applications to the internships with Planta Alta and Big Wave Production open on 17th of August via the Wildscreen website.

To grow and diversify audiences watching wildlife content and engaging with conservation organisations campaigns, it’s critical we address the lack of representation in those creating the content. We hope this scheme will demonstrate the huge benefits of democratising who tells nature’s stories”.

Wildscreen’s CEO said: “We are so grateful to the host production companies and NGOs for supporting this ambitious global storytelling internship scheme and to WWF-UK for being so supportive in the development of this latest and important Wildscreen initiative. Together, we hope to understand and address barriers to young people from underrepresented backgrounds seeking careers in natural world storytelling within the TV industry and conservation NGOs globally.

Planta Alta based in Buenos Aires, Argentina and Big Wave Productions, based in Brighton, UK, will be the first production companies to host interns as part of the scheme, with an additional 10 internships launching over the coming months.

The scheme aims to tackle systemic barriers to entry into the wildlife TV and Conservation sectors, which disproportionately impact groups which are already under represented including ethnically diverse individuals, in-country talent, LGBTQIA+ individuals, those living with disability, womxn, individuals who identify as neurodiverse, and individuals from low socio-economic backgrounds. The international internships will be predominantly located within the global Luciesouth.Muir,

The High Street Market takes place on the first Thursday of every month. Birthday celebrations are happening on Thursday 1st September from 10am until 3pm at the Tithe Barn, High Street, Shirehampton, Bristol, BS11 0DE.

BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS FOR SHIREHAMPTON MARKETS

For bike owners they also have Dr. Bike at their market providing free bike repairs as well as advice. If you have a bike that needs to be fixed or in need of a bit of TLC then pop in and see Sam.

Shirehampton Markets celebrate their 3rd Birthday on Thursday 1st September at their ‘High Street Market’. This is quite an achievement having overcome lock downs and the lingering Coronavirus and now the ‘cost of living crisis’ which is facing everyone at this time.

The second secret is, Shirehampton Markets work together with SCAF (Shirehampton Community Action Forum) to run their events and volunteers Katherine Birth, Kathryn Courtney along with Ash Bearman who is SCAF’s Community Development Officer, are the Management Team. This birthday celebration is to bring the local communities together to have a fun time together and have an enjoyable day that not only has market stalls to browse but games to play – giant snakes and ladders, bounce, buzz wire and card games – painting pop pies, colouring books, sudoku, word search es and D.I.Y face painting.

The first secret behind Shirehampton Markets success is that it is a monthly Community Market with additional seasonal Community Fayres three times a year, which has the support of the local community, not only in Shirehampton but also the additional ‘Four Villages’ communities of Avonmouth, Sea Mills, Coombe Dingle, Kings Weston and Lawrence Weston. Customers attend the markets beyond this area too.

There is also a ‘Find The Sunflowers’ hunt that children can take part in – and yes adults if they want to! – to find 15-character sunflowers in shops and business along Shirehampton’s very own High Street. The prize for completed sunflower searches is a bag of pick n mix sweets. All are winners with this game, and it is a bit of family fun as well as discovering some great shops we have in the village.

The third and final secret is the market stall holders. They have become very much a ‘Market Family’ which include the Market Management and their volunteers. All look out for and look after each other. This adds to the welcoming community atmosphere where families, friends and neighbours meet up for a catch up, a cuppa and a piece of cake. The stall holders and customers are now on first name terms as well. It is certainly community orientated. There is a Fishmonger, a garden/house plants stall, hot food to eat in or take away,Jamaican & Sri Lankan, as well as mini pancakes served with toppings of your choice, all being the best street food in Bristol, - clothes for young children and adults, homeware, ceramics, jewellery, arts and crafts & more all being sold at affordable prices.

Shirehampton Markets pride themselves in supporting small local business, fair trade and environmentally friendly products including upcycling. Don't forget their Market Kitchen where beverages and refreshments are served along with a selection of fabulous, tasty homemade cakes by Sherralee, which includes a gluten/dairy free option. For their birthday celebrations they are bringing back the cream teas along with birthday cake as Forwell.one day only Shirehampton Markets want you to forget the doom and gloom, and join in their birthday celebrations with smiles, laughter, fun, games, and a wonderful day out for all. So, pop along and follow their balloon trail to the Tithe Barn, walk through the door and absorb that welcoming community atmosphere. An order of sun, warmth and blue skies has also been placed. As always, it is free entry, is family and disability friendly and all welcome wherever you are in Bristol. See you there soon!!

A life-affirming story chronicling the extraordinary life of an ordinary man, ‘Laal Singh Chaddha,’ is a retelling of the Academy Award®-winning motion picture ‘Forrest Gump,’ through the lens of India’s modern history and culture. The film brings together Aamir Khan, star of the Academy Award®- nominat ed Lagaan, and Kareena Kapoor Khan to deliver audiences heart, humor and optimism. With a childhood marked by a unique bond between Laal and his single mother, tempered with strong values, the story follows Laal’s journey of love, innocence and destiny as he triumphs over life’s many challenges. As he wins the hearts of those he meets along the way, he reminds us that everyone, even the most unlikely of people, has a story.

Bulbs make a fine display planted in containers and borders, especially Tulips, Snowdrops and Daffodils. They are one of the easiest and most rewarding plants to grow and are great for adding colour to spring borders.

Take cuttings of perennials such as fuchsia, salvia, verbena, penstemon and chrysanthe mum. It’s a great way to increase the number of plants you have for your summer display and there’s something really satisfying about seeing plants grow that you’ve created yourself. Find some strong growth that hasn’t flowered this year and cut a 5 - 10 cm stem just below a leaf joint. Strip the leaves from the lower stem and leave one or two pairs at the top. Dip the end in hormone rooting powder and plant in pots of compost mixed with grit. Leave the pots somewhere bright and warm until rooted then re-pot into larger containers. Over winter in the greenhouse or conservatory.

September is a good month to lift and divide summer-flowering herbaceous perennials. Most perennials need to be divided every three to five years as the plant can become too big for the border and become congest ed. Dividing will invigorate the plant and help to improve flowering and overall shape next year. Gently dig out the plant you want to divide, being careful not to damage the roots. Use a garden fork to separate the plant into two then shake of any excess soil and replant in your chosen spot as soon as possible.

GARDEN IN SEPTEMBER

Summer is coming to an end with the month of September generally being a cooler month than August. The days are becoming noticeably shorter, but the weather is, however usually warm and calm, giving us the ideal conditions to plant trees and shrubs. It’s a great time of the year to appreciate those long lasting plants that flower into autumn and if you have a fruit or vegetable patch you’ll be busy reaping the rewards of a hopefully successful harvest.

Don’t forget - if you look forward to a great spring display of colour then now is the time to buy and plant your bulbs. Whatever you’re doing in your garden this month, be sure to make the most of the remaining warmth while you can.

LOOKING GOOD THIS MONTH

The variety of Hebe flowers best when planted in full sun. the addition of a good quality compost when planting is essential to prevent the roots becoming too dry. After flowering, sheer back dead flower stems to keep the plant looking full.

Tulips come in a huge variety of colours and bloom at a time of year when there is very little colour in the garden. snowdrops, appearing before the tulips, are one of the earliest flowering plants in the garden. When the snowdrops begin to fade, the daffodil begins to appear, with its cheery shades of yellow brightening the borders.

Even if you don’t live near the water, you can still have fun at the “beach.” Go all out and turn your backyard into a seashore soiree. Serve up fruity cocktails with funky paper umbrellas. Grill up kebabs and cut up some watermelon. Keep seating simple by making the meal picnic-style on beach blankets and towels. Break out the limbo stick and cornhole boards for your guests to have the full beach experience!

NATIONAL BEACH DAY August 30th

Keep the SPF handy

Just remember to do your part to protect one of our most cherished natural resources — our beaches.

Throw a beach-themed party

Here’s how you can help: after enjoying the beach, leave nothing behind. Keep animals from getting trapped or tangled in trash, on land and in the water. So, swim, dive, surf, and take in the UK’s aquatic playgrounds.

Everyone loves a good day at the beach, right? Celebrate your affinity for the coast on August 30, National Beach Day. Started in 2014, this holiday raises our awareness of the beauty of beaches while also calling attention to keeping them clean and safe.

Host a beach bbq and clean-up party Invite your friends out to take part in an environmentally-friendly shindig on the beach. Have enough hot dogs and other favorite beach snacks on hand for your guests. Bring a volleyball or a football to throw around, or a guitar to sing some fun summertime favorites. When you’re done, make sure to clean up, and take some time to comb the beach for additional trash.

The light rays of the sun reflect off the ocean water, making it even more intense for your skin. As you spend the day outside, you’re exposing yourself to lots of UV (ultraviolet) rays. Protect your skin by applying some sunscreen. Not only will you ward off sunburns and stings, but you’ll help shield your skin from premature aging.

investors and letting agents, we are regularly having conversations with people about compliance. What often comes across is that people find it changeable and confusing. It is changeable, this is true, but it needn’t be confusing. With this in mind, we have put together a series on some of the most common compliance issues, in an attempt to explain them in a way which is succinct and non-confusing. The first in this series is one that the majority of us will have heard of – Gas safety. Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998 and subsequent amendments

COMPLIANCE MADE SIMPLE (PART 1)

THE REGULATIONS: The Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations came into force on 31st October 1998 and replaced all previous gas safety regulations. During interview Edgecombe denied fly-tipping claiming he was assisting a friend who must have fly-tipped the waste. However the magistrate said he had no doubt it was Edgecombe who communicated with cus tomers and received payment from them and was collecting waste without the appropriate licence and paperwork.

MAN ORDERED TO PAY OVER £2,000 FOLLOWING FLY-TIP PROSECUTION

Unwanted goods and household or garden waste can all be disposed of at no cost via the council’s Sort It recycling centres www. southglos.gov.uk/sortitcentres

Jason Edgecombe, 41, of Northcote Road in Mangotsfield was found guilty of fly-tipping waste at the rear of Northcote Road along with not having a Registered Waste Carrier licence and no Waste Transfer Notes when the case was heard at Bristol Magistrates Court on 15 August. He was fined £484 and was ordered to pay a £48 Victims surcharge and £1,479 in costs, totaling £2,011. During the investigation, the council’s environmental enforcement officers discovered that during or before the first Covid-19 lockdown period in March 2020, Edgecombe advertised a waste collection service on social media under the names of ‘Westcoast Removals’ and ‘Westcoast Waste Removal’. Edgecombe subsequently collected controlled waste for payment from many locations without the correct licence or paperwork. Some of this collected waste was then found deposited in a communal area at the rear of Northcote Road, Mangotsfield.

28

Councillor Rachael Hunt, cabinet member responsible for environmental enforcement at South Gloucestershire Council, said:

“This case saw waste collected without the correct legal paperwork from across South Gloucestershire and then fly-tipped without any consideration of the impact it would have on residents or the environment.

“Our zero-tolerance approach means that anyone who fly-tips in South Gloucestershire is five times more likely to be prosecuted than anywhere else in the country. Our award-winning environmental enforcement team has a 100 per cent record of securing successful prosecutions for this type of offence and if you fail in your duty of care and allow rubbish to be fly-tipped here, you can expect to be caught and brought before the courts.

“We all have a responsibility to dispose of our waste in a responsible and lawful manner. If you hire a company to dispose of your waste, always ask for a copy of the company’s waste carrier registration certificate and ask where the waste is being taken. Failing to carry out these simple checks could mean you are found liable and face a considerable fine if the waste is illegally deposited.”

A Mangotsfield man has been prosecuted by South Gloucestershire Council for fly-tipping and waste offences, and has been ordered to pay a total of £2,011 in fines and costs.

Residents who see illegal fly tipping are encouraged to report it by contacting the council’s StreetCare helpdesk on 01454 868000, emailing streetcare@southglos.gov. uk or visiting www.southglos.gov.uk/flytipping

SEE MONSTER’s roar will be heard when the waterfall begins its cascade in September, along with the unique lighting design, which will mark the next phase for this one-of-a-kind immersive public art installation.

30

During this time, people will see the decommissioned offshore platform evolve, as it is rehabilitated with an oasis of grasses, plants and trees selected to thrive in a seaside microclimate; shimmering scales made up of 6,000 pieces that form the kinetic façade; artist-designed experiments in renewable energy generation; and a seated amphitheatre, from which the coastline and Wales may be seen from the telescopes onboard.

SEE MONSTER HAS AWAKENED

SEE MONSTER’s Studio will also open in partnership with BBC Radio Bristol who will be broadcasting regular shows from the SEE MONSTER site, piloting new pop-up studio technology. This space will also be used by national and international broadcasters, content creators and educators, to tell stories of the monster’s themes.

More details are announced this week about the free public events programme that kicks off during August Bank Holiday weekend, as SEE MONSTER’s transformation continues at the iconic Tropicana, in ‘TheWeston-super-Mare.Awakening’marks the emergence of the monster as it changes from a decommissioned North Sea offshore platform into one of the UK’s biggest art Beachsideinstallations.events will begin with three free drone shows, which will fill the night-time sky on Sunday 28 August, Tuesday 30 August and Thursday 1 September, created by the awardwinning studio SKYMAGIC, whose work includes the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games and London New Year’s Eve. These magical moments will illuminate the story of SEE MONSTER and its journey from the North Sea to Weston-super-Mare, along with tales of reuse, renewables, and the great British weather. Over the following weeks, ‘The Transformation’ can be witnessed from the newly built Viewing Platform, situated inside the Tropicana.

SEE MONSTER is one of ten major creative projects commissioned as part of UNBOXED: Creativity in the UK, which is currently underway in England, Northern Ireland and Wales.

31

Cllr Mark Canniford, Executive Member for Placemaking and Economy at North Somerset Council, said: “SEE MONSTER is capturing the imaginations of residents and visitors who are eagerly watching its transformation from an offshore platform to a monster. The arrival in July was just the warm-up act, but the drone shows will be spectacular curtain raisers for what promises to be a very exciting autumn in Weston-super-Mare.”

O’Mahony, Creative Director and Founder of NEWSUBSTANCE, the Leeds-based studio leading SEE MONSTER’s creative team, said, “This is an extraordinarily exciting project to be working on, and we’re thrilled that the transformation of SEE MONSTER is underway. SEE MONSTER is a world first and while this has taken longer than anticipated, we are incredibly grateful to the people of Weston-super-Mare, as well as North Somerset and Weston Town Councils for their support and patience on this journey.”

“SEE MONSTER is no doubt the biggest of the UNBOXED projects, physically, but what it shares withthe other nine, is incrediblecreative ambition.

SEE MONSTER brings togetherenormously talented people fromart, engineering, science, anddesign to make something thathas never been done before. It’sabout testing ideas for thefuture and our thanks go out tothe people of Weston-super-Marefor welcoming this boldexperiment, which we hope theywill be very proud to have helpedcreate.”

Martin Green CBE, Chief Creative Officer at UNBOXED; Creativity in the UK, commented:

By the end of September, visitors will be able to climb onboard this 35-metre beast of the sea, be immersed in clouds as they enter the Cellar, and witness renewable technolo gies in the Garden Lab, before reaching the pinnacle of the monster at the Helideck - a space that will reveal hitherto unseen coastal Patrickviews.

CALLINGTON ROAD NATURE RESERVE: Many residents were very concerned about the low water levels in the pond in Callington Road Nature Reserve. In response to a query we submitted to the council, we received the following advice from their Nature Conservation Officer: “As the pond is supposed to be a wildlife pond, as harsh as it may seem, it is better to let nature take it's course - the occasional drying out of ponds is a natural occurrence. It would actually be better for wildlife if the fish (which are presumably goldfish that people have released in there) weren't in there anyway. It is unadvisable to move them to other established ponds as this risks accidentally also transferring diseases. So unless someone wants to create a new or temporary pond to house the fish until that pond fills up again, I don't think there is anything that can be done.”Thankfully, the recent heavy rain has replenished the pond to a certain extent.

ANOTHER ROUND-UP OF LOCAL NEWS FROM YOUR HARDWORKING LIB DEM TEAM

BOATYARD LATEST: Local residents may be aware that the construction company, Mid Group, who were building the new Boatyard development by Totterdown Bridge has gone into adminis tration. Over the last few weeks, we have written to the Mayor’s Office, the Cabinet Member with responsibility for housing, and Clarion Housing, who were due to be running the scheme, to offer our help and support and to ask that we be kept in the loop so that we can report any updates to local residents. We also raised our concerns about the blocked pavement, cycle path and bus lane on the northern side of the Bath Road adjacent to the site and the fact that the temporary lights to help pedestrians cross the busy road were switched off and then removed. We received the following response from Clarion: “We appreciate the note on the lights and have already engaged with a partner to address this and ensure that these are maintained and in full working order to maintain a safe environment. We understand the query on the pavement, and unfortunately this is currently not possible due to the crane position. However, we will look to get the footpath reopened as soon as we can once works recommence.”

GAOL FERRY BRIDGE CLOSURE: Don't forget, Gaol Ferry Bridge has now closed for essential repairs. Please follow the diversion via Bedminster Bridge or Vauxhall Bridge.

TALBOT ROAD ALLOTMENT SHOW: Thank you to everyone who came to this year’s Talbot Road Allotment Show. It was another successful event, which seems to get bigger and better every year. There was fantastic produce on display, delicious cakes and wonderful entertainment from a local ukulele band. Well done to everyone involved.

COST OF LIVING SUPPORT: The rising cost of living is affecting everybody in the city in different ways. In response, the council have put together a guide with useful websites, community organisations, advice and ple-and-communities/cost-of-living-supporthttps://www.bristol.gov.uk/residents/peoguidance.

The next round of Housing Forums for council tenants and leaseholders is taking place online in September. For the Autumn meetings residents are invited to help shape how the council improve the look and feel of blocks, estates and communal areas. Following the Big Housing Conversation in 2021, additional investment has been identified to help with this and the council would now like to know how residents think this money should be spent. The council would also like to hear views on security, and ideas for supporting nature and wildlife around homes. At the Forums, there will also be an update on the Bristol Housing Allocations Review and how residents can get involved and give their views. Chew Valley Lake is a reservoir in the heart of the lush Chew Valley, 12 miles south of Bristol by road, making it a perfect escape from the city for a scenic countryside walk with baby on good paths.Part of Bristol Water, Chew Valley Lake is also an establish wildlife haven and visited by many different species of wildfowl such as the Great Crested Grebe, Tufted Duck and Canada Geese.

Two short nature walks – the Grebe and Bittern trails, have been created at Chew Valley Lake to allow the visitors to enjoy the scenery and watch for visiting wildfowl. Both trails are well marked and the Grebe trail in particular is well surfaced for walking with pushchairs, offering easy strolling on flat path s for those seeking a breath of fresh air with baby or small children or the disabled.

From Car Park 1 take the path near the car park entrance (opposite end to the car park) and follow the well made path along the edge of Chew Valley Lake and reed beds. There are some benches along this part of the walk and plenty of opportunities to take in the views of the lake, Denny Island and beyond to the Mendip Hills. The path continues into the second car park where there are plenty of picnic benches. Walk through the picnic area and join the Grebe trail at the east end of the parking area. Take the lakeside path and walk along past the reed beds. From here you can clearly see Denny Island – a wildlife reserve and breeding site for wildfowl and there are continued good views of Chew Valley Lake. Walk onwards past the pond on your left to the wooden bridge and start of the woods and the Bittern Trail. If walking with baby in a pushchair or with a dog, continue past the bridge on the Grebe trail. If you have a baby carrier, good shoes or are accompanied by a small wildlife enthusiast (!) and want to con tinue on the 1.5 km Bittern Trail loop or visit the bird hide, cross over the wooden bridge and turn right taking the footpath along the edge of the woods, keeping an eye out for the Kingfishers that can often be spotted Followhere. the path to the edge of the woods and through a parking area, before picking up the path on the other side and passing by meadow and through the woodland.

This walk starts from the first car park area closest to Chew Stoke (where the excellent Salt & Malt fish and chips restaurant is located) and covers the lake walk to the second picnic area, the Grebe and the Bittern nature trails but it is possible to start your walk from either car park and cover as much or as little of the trails with baby as you would like.

The reasons for dampness in buildings are wide and not always straightforward to diagnose. Tackling a damp problem through a standalone treatment such as a damp proof course injection is rarely the answer.

BUILDINGSINPROBLEMSDAMP

The objective of the damp survey is to build up a property profile to understand what could be causing the damp so that a decision can be made as to the right course of action. The essential first step is carrying out an external and internal property inspection, assessing factors such as property layout, construction, and environment, vegetation, drainage, and any recent changes to the Aproperty.condensation survey also needs a technical approach. With air conditions constantly changing inside a property, humidity levels and dew points need to be calculated to see if condensation is taking place. Natural occurring cold spots, insulation, shape and layout of rooms, ventilation and lifestyle all need to be considered as these can all impact on condensation problems.

The damp survey is not only looking at the damp problem in isolation. It must also involve looking at problems that may have been caused as a result of the damp condi tions. This could involve a dry rot problem, woodworm, decay to timbers and even wall tie
