Bristol-based conservation charity, Wildscreen, has launched its latest flagship initiative, the inaugural Wildscreen Storytelling Internship Schem The scheme, which has the backing of WWF-UK, will provide paid internship opportunities for six UK-based and six internationally-based 18-25 year olds, wanting to pursue careers in natural world storytelling and content creation within the TV and Conservation Fromsectors.Autumn
As well as being provided with the opportunity to gain valuable ‘hands-on’ professional skills and experience, the cohort will also benefit from one-to-one mentoring within the host organisations and one-year's membership to the Wildscreen Network, the world’s biggest professional community for the wildlife film and TV genre, to help launch their careers in the natural world storytelling industries.
2022, 12 internationally renowned wildlife TV production companies and Conservation NGOs will open their doors to aspiring storytellers and content creators, providing paid, practical experience across a variety of roles spanning camera operating to editing, from story development to scriptwriting.

Shirehampton Markets celebrate their 3rd Birthday on Thursday 1st September at their ‘High Street Market’. This is quite an achievement having overcome lock downs and the lingering Coronavirus and now the ‘cost of living crisis’ which is facing everyone at this time.
The second secret is, Shirehampton Markets work together with SCAF (Shirehampton Community Action Forum) to run their events and volunteers Katherine Birth, Kathryn Courtney along with Ash Bearman who is SCAF’s Community Development Officer, are the Management Team. This birthday celebration is to bring the local communities together to have a fun time together and have an enjoyable day that not only has market stalls to browse but games to play – giant snakes and ladders, bounce, buzz wire and card games – painting pop pies, colouring books, sudoku, word search es and D.I.Y face painting.
The first secret behind Shirehampton Markets success is that it is a monthly Community Market with additional seasonal Community Fayres three times a year, which has the support of the local community, not only in Shirehampton but also the additional ‘Four Villages’ communities of Avonmouth, Sea Mills, Coombe Dingle, Kings Weston and Lawrence Weston. Customers attend the markets beyond this area too.
There is also a ‘Find The Sunflowers’ hunt that children can take part in – and yes adults if they want to! – to find 15-character sunflowers in shops and business along Shirehampton’s very own High Street. The prize for completed sunflower searches is a bag of pick n mix sweets. All are winners with this game, and it is a bit of family fun as well as discovering some great shops we have in the village.
The third and final secret is the market stall holders. They have become very much a ‘Market Family’ which include the Market Management and their volunteers. All look out for and look after each other. This adds to the welcoming community atmosphere where families, friends and neighbours meet up for a catch up, a cuppa and a piece of cake. The stall holders and customers are now on first name terms as well. It is certainly community orientated. There is a Fishmonger, a garden/house plants stall, hot food to eat in or take away,Jamaican & Sri Lankan, as well as mini pancakes served with toppings of your choice, all being the best street food in Bristol, - clothes for young children and adults, homeware, ceramics, jewellery, arts and crafts & more all being sold at affordable prices.
Shirehampton Markets pride themselves in supporting small local business, fair trade and environmentally friendly products including upcycling. Don't forget their Market Kitchen where beverages and refreshments are served along with a selection of fabulous, tasty homemade cakes by Sherralee, which includes a gluten/dairy free option. Bulbs make a fine display planted in containers and borders, especially Tulips, Snowdrops and Daffodils. They are one of the easiest and most rewarding plants to grow and are great for adding colour to spring borders.
Take cuttings of perennials such as fuchsia, salvia, verbena, penstemon and chrysanthe mum. It’s a great way to increase the number of plants you have for your summer display and there’s something really satisfying about seeing plants grow that you’ve created yourself. Find some strong growth that hasn’t flowered this year and cut a 5 - 10 cm stem just below a leaf joint. Strip the leaves from the lower stem and leave one or two pairs at the top. Dip the end in hormone rooting powder and plant in pots of compost mixed with grit. Leave the pots somewhere bright and warm until rooted then re-pot into larger containers. Over winter in the greenhouse or conservatory.
September is a good month to lift and divide summer-flowering herbaceous perennials. Most perennials need to be divided every three to five years as the plant can become too big for the border and become congest ed. Dividing will invigorate the plant and help to improve flowering and overall shape next year. Gently dig out the plant you want to divide, being careful not to damage the roots. Use a garden fork to separate the plant into two then shake of any excess soil and replant in your chosen spot as soon as possible.

THE REGULATIONS: The Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations came into force on 31st October 1998 and replaced all previous gas safety regulations. These regulations place legal duties on landlords, agents and contractors who are dealing with the ren tal of the property. Requirements & Duties: There must be a valid gas safety certificate in place during the whole duration of the gascoveringtenancy,allappliances which are within the property. This certificate must be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer.

During interview Edgecombe denied fly-tipping claiming he was assisting a friend who must have fly-tipped the waste. However the magistrate said he had no doubt it was Edgecombe who communicated with cus tomers and received payment from them and was collecting waste without the appropriate licence and paperwork.

Jason Edgecombe, 41, of Northcote Road in Mangotsfield was found guilty of fly-tipping waste at the rear of Northcote Road along with not having a Registered Waste Carrier licence and no Waste Transfer Notes when the case was heard at Bristol Magistrates Court on 15 August. He was fined £484 and was ordered to pay a £48 Victims surcharge and £1,479 in costs, totaling £2,011. During the investigation, the council’s environmental enforcement officers discovered that during or before the first Covid-19 lockdown period in March 2020, Edgecombe advertised a waste collection service on social media under the names of ‘Westcoast Removals’ and ‘Westcoast Waste Removal’. Edgecombe subsequently collected controlled waste for payment from many locations without the correct licence or paperwork. Some of this collected waste was then found deposited in a communal area at the rear of Northcote Road, Mangotsfield.

Councillor Rachael Hunt, cabinet member responsible for environmental enforcement at South Gloucestershire Council, said:
“This case saw waste collected without the correct legal paperwork from across South Gloucestershire and then fly-tipped without any consideration of the impact it would have on residents or the environment.
“Our zero-tolerance approach means that anyone who fly-tips in South Gloucestershire is five times more likely to be prosecuted than anywhere else in the country. Our award-winning environmental enforcement team has a 100 per cent record of securing successful prosecutions for this type of offence and if you fail in your duty of care and allow rubbish to be fly-tipped here, you can expect to be caught and brought before the courts.
“We all have a responsibility to dispose of our waste in a responsible and lawful manner. If you hire a company to dispose of your waste, always ask for a copy of the company’s waste carrier registration certificate and ask where the waste is being taken. Failing to carry out these simple checks could mean you are found liable and face a considerable fine if the waste is illegally deposited.”
A Mangotsfield man has been prosecuted by South Gloucestershire Council for fly-tipping and waste offences, and has been ordered to pay a total of £2,011 in fines and costs.

CALLINGTON ROAD NATURE RESERVE: Many residents were very concerned about the low water levels in the pond in Callington Road Nature Reserve. In response to a query we submitted to the council, we received the following advice from their Nature Conservation Officer: “As the pond is supposed to be a wildlife pond, as harsh as it may seem, it is better to let nature take it's course - the occasional drying out of ponds is a natural occurrence. It would actually be better for wildlife if the fish (which are presumably goldfish that people have released in there) weren't in there anyway. It is unadvisable to move them to other established ponds as this risks accidentally also transferring diseases. So unless someone wants to create a new or temporary pond to house the fish until that pond fills up again, I don't think there is anything that can be done.”Thankfully, the recent heavy rain has replenished the pond to a certain extent.

BOATYARD LATEST: Local residents may be aware that the construction company, Mid Group, who were building the new Boatyard development by Totterdown Bridge has gone into adminis tration. Over the last few weeks, we have written to the Mayor’s Office, the Cabinet Member with responsibility for housing, and Clarion Housing, who were due to be running the scheme, to offer our help and support and to ask that we be kept in the loop so that we can report any updates to local residents. We also raised our concerns about the blocked pavement, cycle path and bus lane on the northern side of the Bath Road adjacent to the site and the fact that the temporary lights to help pedestrians cross the busy road were switched off and then removed. We received the following response from Clarion: “We appreciate the note on the lights and have already engaged with a partner to address this and ensure that these are maintained and in full working order to maintain a safe environment. We understand the query on the pavement, and unfortunately this is currently not possible due to the crane position. However, we will look to get the footpath reopened as soon as we can once works recommence.”

Chew Valley Lake is a reservoir in the heart of the lush Chew Valley, 12 miles south of Bristol by road, making it a perfect escape from the city for a scenic countryside walk with baby on good paths.Part of Bristol Water, Chew Valley Lake is also an establish wildlife haven and visited by many different species of wildfowl such as the Great Crested Grebe, Tufted Duck and Canada Geese.
Two short nature walks – the Grebe and Bittern trails, have been created at Chew Valley Lake to allow the visitors to enjoy the scenery and watch for visiting wildfowl. Both trails are well marked and the Grebe trail in particular is well surfaced for walking with pushchairs, offering easy strolling on flat path s for those seeking a breath of fresh air with baby or small children or the disabled.
From Car Park 1 take the path near the car park entrance (opposite end to the car park) and follow the well made path along the edge of Chew Valley Lake and reed beds. There are some benches along this part of the walk and plenty of opportunities to take in the views of the lake, Denny Island and beyond to the Mendip Hills. The path continues into the second car park where there are plenty of picnic benches. Walk through the picnic area and join the Grebe trail at the east end of the parking area. Take the lakeside path and walk along past the reed beds. From here you can clearly see Denny Island – a wildlife reserve and breeding site for wildfowl and there are continued good views of Chew Valley Lake. Walk onwards past the pond on your left to the wooden bridge and start of the woods and the Bittern Trail. If walking with baby in a pushchair or with a dog, continue past the bridge on the Grebe trail. If you have a baby carrier, good shoes or are accompanied by a small wildlife enthusiast (!) and want to con tinue on the 1.5 km Bittern Trail loop or visit the bird hide, cross over the wooden bridge and turn right taking the footpath along the edge of the woods, keeping an eye out for the Kingfishers that can often be spotted Followhere. the path to the edge of the woods and through a parking area, before picking up the path on the other side and passing by meadow and through the woodland.

There are two visitor car parks and picnic areas at Chew Valley Lake, both accessible from Wally Lane between the villages of Chew Stoke and Bishop Sutton. This walk starts from the first car park area closest to Chew Stoke (where the excellent Salt & Malt fish and chips restaurant is located) and covers the lake walk to the second picnic area, the Grebe and the Bittern nature trails but it is possible to start your walk from either car park and cover as much or as little of the trails with baby as you would like.

When you reach the end of the board-walk you should turn left to follow the grassy path back along the edge of the woods, keeping the hedge on your right. Follow the trail back along the hedge and through the woods until you return to the second parking area. The majority of eligible people will receive their payment within a couple of weeks of this date, it added.
Chancellor Nadhim Zahawi said in an online statement: “We know that rising prices faced by many countries around the world are a significant worry for many people here in the UK, especially those most vulnerable to additional costs.
Millions of households will receive a £150 cost-of-living payment from the end of next month, the Government has said.
The payment is intended to help disabled people with the rising cost of living and the higher costs they face, such as for care and mobility needs.
The one-off payment, announced in May, will be paid automatically to people who receive certain disability benefits from September 20, the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) said.
“Today’s announcement that disabled people will begin to receive an additional £150 payment from the end of September reinforc es our commitment to help UK households through the challenging times ahead.”

The essential first step is carrying out an external and internal property inspection, assessing factors such as property layout, construction, and environment, vegetation, drainage, and any recent changes to the Aproperty.condensation survey also needs a technical approach. With air conditions constantly changing inside a property, humidity levels and dew points need to be calculated to see if condensation is taking place. Natural occurring cold spots, insulation, shape and layout of rooms, ventilation and lifestyle all need to be considered as these can all impact on condensation problems.
