Malaysian comfort food and all-things-filled Pasta is the latest to be paired with drinks at North Street dining hall

Bedminster’s ever changing dining hall, Kitchen by KASK, has announced its latest line-up of dates guaranteed to bring a mouthful of flavour to North Street. With Malaysian street-food favourite Fat Rice and filled-pasta experts RaviOllie as the next chefs to take over the Kitchen. Working closely with the chefs, Bristol fav KASK will once again be providing a curated menu of wine, beers + soft drinks, in their mission to show that food + drink pairing menus don’t have to be just for special occasions.

No stranger to North Street, Fat Rice is back in the Kitchen from Thursday 30 until Saturday 1 April for its second residency after selling out the venue’s opening week last September. Fat Rice’s menu includes Pork Belly and Shiitake Mushrooms braised in soy sauce with steamed rice; Kunyit Fried Chicken with Turmeric sauce; and Braised Shiitake Mushrooms with soy chunks + tofu skin. The three nights have nearly sold out with only a few spots still available.

Following Fat Rice, RaviOllie will be the first Pasta chef to pop-up in the venue, taking over the Kitchen for three weeks from Thursday 6th, and KASK will be using the opportunity to bring in a new range of Italian wines to pair with each dish. From a large kitchen facility in Bedminster, RaviOllie sells restaurant quality fresh ravioli via their website; supplies filled pasta to a large range of restaurants, pubs and hotels throughout the South West; and is a regular musteat at summer events and festivals. With a background in Michelin-starred restaurants, founder Ollie Greenhalgh is looking forward to taking over Kitchen by KASK for three weeks with ‘RaviOllie presents Full-Filled’.

A range of both classics and experimental filled-pasta dishes will include Open Ravioli with Scallops, Dill, Slow Roasted Tomatoes, Cucumber + Butter Sauce; South Devon Crab, Mascarpone + Dill Ravioli with Lobster Bisque, Samphir, Slow Roasted Tomatoes and Tarragon; Hereford Lamb Rump with Lamb Sauce, Peas, Lardons and Lamb Ravioli with Cavelo Nero; and a vegan Jerusalem Artichoke Ravioli with Grated Truffle. The full-filled theme will continue into dessert with Pistachio Cannoli and Deep Fried Pear and Goats Cheese Ravioli on the menu.

Charlie Taylor, co-owner of Kitchen by KASK, said: “We're excited to have Fat Rice back in the Kitchen and to then welcome RaviOllie for the first time. Malaysian food is not a natural match with wine so it’s always a fun challenge coming up with pairings that work; and a completely different challenge to narrow down the options for RaviOllie, with pasta and wine being such a perfect combination. We’ve wanted to bring pasta to Kitchen by KASK ever since we opened and having tasted some of the menu already, we can’t wait for our customers to try it.”

Showcasing the diversity of the space, Kitchen by KASK also regularly hosts Buskers Banquets, supper clubs with The MAZI Project and All About the Cooks, and private parties, and is already cooking up something special for summer - which anyone who’s serious about food should keep an eye out for.

RICKY GERVAIS BRINGS ARMAGEDDON TOUR TO BRISTOL

Popular comedian Ricky Gervais is coming to the Bristol Beacon in December for two concerts as part of his world famous Armageddon Tour.

Following his visit to York, Gervias tweeted: “Thanks to the amazing Armageddon crowd in York tonight. Might be my favorite performance for this tour so far. I also loved visiting the railway museum. In fact, I think I like pretty much everything here. Maybe I’d lose some of the rain Anyway, see you soon.”

Reviewers of the show say it pushes the boundaries further than its Netflix special super nature. This show drew a lot of backlash after his comments about transgender people. Gervais devoted a significant portion of the show to commenting on the trans community, joking that “old-fashioned women” are “the ones with wombs” and that he’s morphing into “Vicky Gervais.”

Gervais defended the program, saying He wanted to “take audiences to a place they’ve never been before.” He told BBC One’s ‘The One Show’: “I think that’s what comedy is really for – to get us through stuff and I delve into taboo subjects because I want to take the audience to a place where it’s never been a split second before.”

A Bristol Beacon spokesman said: “The creator and star of ‘The Office’, ‘Extras’, ‘Derek’ and the critically acclaimed hit ‘After Life’ (Netflix), Ricky Gervais, has won countless awards According to Life, which was released on Netflix in March 2019, Ricky has since written and completed filming on a second series that will hit Netflix in 2020. His hit series The Office is the highest-grossing British comedy of all time, shown in more than 90 countries with seven remakes.”

STRUGGLING HOUSEHOLDS ON UNIVERSAL CREDIT

The Chancellor has announced that benefits payments will go up in line with the September inflation rate of 10.1%.

This means a yearly increase of £600 for the average family on Universal Credit. Specifically, those aged under 25 receiving a standard allowance will see an increase from £265.31 per month to £292.11, while singles aged 25 and over will have their monthly allowance rise from £334.91 to £368.74.

However, if you’re struggling right now and are after extra support, here’s 6 freebies you could be entitled to and how to claim.

COST OF LIVING PAYMENT - £900

Millions of households will receive £301 in free cash from April, the government has said.

The Department for Work and Pensions confirmed the dates when the first instalment of the £900 cost of living payment will be made.

Those eligible for the tax-free payment won’t have to do anything as it will be made automatically.

The full list of benefits that qualify people for the payment is:

• Universal Credit

• Income-based Jobseekers Allowance

• Income-related Employment and Support Allowance

• Income Support

• Working Tax Credit

• Child Tax Credit

• Pension credit

• If you were receiving any of the above benefits between January 26 and February 25 this year you will receive the £301 payment.

If you were later found to be entitled to any of the above benefits between January 26 and February 25 you will be eligible for the payment too.

The DWP said those on tax credits only will receive their payment from HMRC after the DWP payments begin.

COUNCIL TAX

Some households on low incomes could be eligible for a discount on their council tax bill.

As one of the biggest bills for households and the worst consequences if you get behind, finding out if you can get a reduction could help you get by.

And this might be something to take advantage of as council tax costs will rise in April.

If you claim for a discount, in some cases you could even get your bill reduced to zero and with the average bill for a band D home at £1,966, that could save a significant sum.

The reduction could prove to be even more essential as council tax bills are set to go up again in April.

To find out if you’re eligible and apply you’ll need to contact your local councilyou can find yours using the gov.uk tool, just enter your postcode.

FREE SCHOOL MEALS

If you're claiming certain benefits including Universal Credit then your child might be entitled to free school meals.

You will need to apply through your local authority so that they can apply for extra funding from the Government, while some councils ask you to contact the school directly.

Simply click here and type in your postcode to be redirected to your local council's website and apply.

The exact amount you'll get depends on where you are, but ranges from around £2.15 to £2.60 per day, or around £400£500 each school year.

FREE £150 FOR SCHOOL UNIFORMS

How much you can get in England to help pay for school uniforms varies depending on where you live, but you can get up to £200 in some local authorities.

As a general rule, those on income support, Universal Credit, JSA, child tax credit, ESA, and pension tax credit are entitled to support under Part IV of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999.

You may also be eligible if your annual income is less than £16,190.

To apply, you need to put in your postcode on the Gov.uk website, which will direct you to your council's website where you should search for “uniform grant” in the “Education” section to find out what help is available in your area.

The iconic free family event of the summer, Bristol Harbour Festival returns from 14th - 16th July 2023, with newly imagined entertainment zones, Circus Playground moving to College Green and an inclusive water programme that celebrates the city’s harbour.

Attracting over 250,000 visitors to enjoy over one mile of entertainment, the festival will feature a huge range of local talent, world-class circus, music acts and on the water activity from cardboard boat races to high octane jetpack stunts.

With five areas filled with music and entertainment, Bristol Harbour Festival fans can look forward to five performance platforms, bringing beats, boats and backflips to the summer extravaganza. Cirque Bijou will once again be bringing tricks and trapeze, children’s entertainment and pop-up performances at the Circus Playground which will now take pride of place at a brand new city green space, College Green.

The Jelli Shack will take over Millenium Square, providing chill-out beach-bar vibes with an acoustic programme brought to you by the team at Jelli Records. Featuring an abundance of Bristol talent, the Jelli Shack will also have dodgems and refreshments, making this a ultimate spot to bask in the sunshine.

The Amphitheatre will become a great spot to enjoy a bite from the Food Court with music from Access Creative College, Ujima Radio and BCFM Radio as it becomes Harbour View. The perfect place to promenade alongside moored vessels and look out onto the stunning setting of Bristol’s floating harbour. It's time to pull up a picnic bench and soak up the summer vibes.

Three days of maritime-magic puts puts local talent at the forefront of 2023 Bristol Harbour Festival showcase

On the Water entertainment will return to the Harbour Festival, bringing the water at the heart of our city to life with activities showcasing maritime-magic from jet ski stunts to the iconic Pyrounaut showing off its skills.

Bristol’s Georgian Queen Square will transform into the Music Quarter; curated by Harbour Festival programming legend, Tony Benjamin. This space will kick start the festival on Friday night and will also feature the brightest talent from Access Creative College alongside established acts.

The festival has opened its annual Expression of Interest for those wanting to perform and get involved with the festival this year, hoping to attract the newest and coolest into the festival from all over corners of the city once again. With a large number of performers coming through the EOI form last year, applications are open to everyone and anyone looking to share their talent.

Marvin Rees, Mayor of Bristol, said: “Bristol’s Harbour Festival is a big part of our city’s calendar, and an incredible platform for aspiring artists and local talent to perform in front of huge audiences. The Harbour Festival is an event for all communities and is an opportunity to showcase the diverse Bristol we’re proud to call home. We look forward to celebrating together and bringing another brilliant free-festival to Bristol this Summer.”

Applications for boat owners and visiting vessels who wish to attend this year’s festival can apply from the 17th April 2023 on the Sail Bristol app. Allocations will be made on a first come first serve basis and more information can be found on the Harbour Festival website.

Bristol Harbour Festival’s new and reformed festival is brought to the city by Bristol City Council. The Circus Playground is supported and funded by the High Street Recovery Fund.

CHOCOLATE EGG BREAD

INGREDIENTS

180ml whole milk

50g unsalted butter, melted

3 eggs

500g white bread mix

60g caster sugar

For the decoration

2 tbsp sprinkles, plus extra to decorate

150g chocolate eggs

50g aster sugar

METHOD

Put the milk, butter and two of the eggs into a jug and whisk to combine

Tip the bread mix into a large mixing bowl, add the sugar, then make a well in the centre

Pour the milk mixture into the well and mix with a wooden spoon until a loose dough forms

Turn out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 10 mins, until smooth and elastic.

Put into a large, lightly oiled bowl, cover with cling film and leave in a warm place for an hour, or until doubled in size

Cut the dough into three equal pieces Working with one piece at a time, shape each into a rope about 40cm long

Lay the ropes together length-ways on a lined baking sheet and plait together to make one large loaf

Cover with a clean tea towel and leave to rise again for 30 mins, or until puffed up

Preheat the oven to 200°C/fan 180°C/ gas 6

Whisk the remaining egg with 1 tbsp water

Brush all over the loaf and bake in the oven for 25-30 mins, until golden

Meanwhile, put the sugar and 3 tbsp water in a small saucepan and bring to the boil

Cook for about 2 mins, until syrupy

Brush the loaf with the sticky syrup, leave to cool slightly, then decorate with the chocolate eggs and extra sprinkles

HOT CROSS PEANUT BUTTER BLONDIES

INGREDIENTS

200g unsalted butter, plus extra for greasing

250g white chocolate, roughly chopped

200g light brown soft sugar

3 large eggs, lightly beaten

1 tbsp vanilla extract

3 tbsp smooth peanut butter

200g gluten free plain flour

20g roasted and salted peanuts, finely chopped

You will also need a piping bag

METHOD

Preheat the oven to 180°C/fan 160°C/ gas 4

Grease and line a 28cm x 18cm x 5cm baking tray with greaseproof paper

Melt the butter and 200g of the chocolate in a large heatproof bowl set over a pan of simmering water

Remove from the heat and mix in the sugar until smooth

Add the eggs, vanilla and peanut butter, and mix again

Sift in the flour and whisk until smooth

Pour into the prepared baking tray and sprinkle the peanuts on top

Bake on the middle shelf of the oven for 25-30 mins, until a thin crust has formed and the blondie is almost set in the middle

Leave to cool fully in the tin. Take care not to overcook or you will lose the gooey middle — the blondies will firm up more once cooled

Spring should be well under way this month with daffodils in full flow, their bright flowers enough to cheer up any day. Blossom trees will be blooming and fresh growth will be appearing on plants everywhere. “April showers’ are common but don’t be deceived by sudden burst of rainfall – you may need to start watering plants more regularly on dry, bright and windy days. With longer days and stronger sunshine growing conditions are continually improving and the warmer weather will give us all the opportunity to get busy in our gardens.

SOW HARDY ANNUALS

Hardy annuals are plants that can be sown from seed in the open ground. Get them off to an early start by sowing in pots or modules. Modular trays are also handy for sowing summer bedding plants such as marigolds, lobelia and petunias. Label each seed tray and once they are growing put them outside when the weather is warm day and night.

SUPPORT CLIMBERS

Climbing plants should be growing rapidly now, so will need ample support for new growth. Extend or replace trellis as necessary or add more wire to archers and tripods.

New shoots will need to be gently encouraged sideways as they grow. This will send vital growth hormones doing the length of the shoot rather than just to the tip and so will encourage flowering all over the plant.

PLANT OF THE MONTH RHODODENDRON

The rest of the garden will also be growing well now, so if you have been putting off carrying out any major pruning then now is the time to bite the bullet and get it done. Trees, shrubs and hedges should be cut back now before birds begin to nest.

CARE FOR YOUR LAWN

The lawn will need regular mowing from now until autumn. Get some maintenance carried out to your lawn mower to ensure it stays in good running order – at the very least your mower blades should newly sharpened ready for regular use. Keep the edges of the lawn tidy after moving with a sharp pair of shears or a lawn edger. Don’t forget to give the lawn a spring feed after mowing if you haven’t got around to doing it yet. If a more drastic approach is needed to spruce up your lawn, sowing seeds for new lawns or over seeding dead patches can be carried out from mid-April onwards.

WHY SHOULD YOU PLANT THEM?

Ancient Greek meaning “Rose tree’ the rhododendron family includes azaleas. These stunning shrubs flower in all sorts of vibrant colours and can help brighten those difficult dark spots in your garden. Rhododendrons are grown for their spectacular flowers usually borne in spring, although some – the deciduous rhododendron or azaleas have good autumn colour.

HOW SHOULD YOU PLANT THEM?

In the wild rhododendrons are woodland plants, so they prefer dappled sunshine and can manage well in shade. They like plenty of water however will not do well in boggy or badly draining soil, so drainage is key. Plant in autumn or spring and use ericaceous compost.

Dorothy Illingworth, Shop Manager says, “We are really struggling with menswear donations at the moment. Stocks are running low and we’d like to ask the local community to think of us before they throw away any unwanted quality clothing.”

The shop is open from 09:00 to 17:00 Monday to Saturday and is always in need of donations. Please leave any menswear donations and other good-quality clothing, accessories and bric-a-brac with someone at the shop during the day.

BRISTOL NHS EYE HOSPITAL CENTER MOVES TO GALLERIES SHOPPING CENTER

The UHBW Eye Clinic Ratings Center recently transitioned to the Galleries Shopping Center in Broadmead, Bristol to make services more accessible and closer to important transport hubs. The service officially opened on March 23rd after leaving its temporary location at the UHBW Education and Research Center near the Bristol Royal Infirmary.

Originally established in July 2020, this clinic provides comprehensive assessments and treatments for patients with long-term vision impairments. Thorough tests, such as imaging scans, are administered so that doctors can act fast to prevent further deterioration of vision. This is not the first time the Eye Clinic has moved; before being located at BRI it was hosted at Bristol Nightingale and Nuffield.

In less than three years of operation, the center has been visited by over 30,000 patients and was a finalist in the 2022 NHS Parliamentary Awards, with 98 per cent of patients rating the service as good to excellent. UHBW said the move will offer patients excellent transport links and accessibility, saying that “hopefully the move of the service to the Galleries in Broadmead, Bristol will be longer term”.

How long-term that will be is unclear, as plans to demolish the Galleries shopping center were unveiled last year, with developers planning to build 450 new apartments on the site, as well as offices, student housing, a hotel, shops and cafes. The start of construction is planned for the end of 2024, the completion of the project for 2027.

A VITAL KEY ROUTE TO BRISTOL WILL BE CLOSED OVERNIGHT FOR THE NEXT TWO WEEKS

A series of nighttime closures on the A370 Long Ashton dual carriageway will take place for the next two weeks. These drastic alterations are due to current roadworks which have already created significant congestion between Backwell and Ashton Gate. The road will be closed off between its Flax Bourton and Park and Ride exits, requiring motorists to use an alternative route through Long Ashton village. Be sure to plan your journey ahead if you expect to travel in that area during those times.

The Long Ashton bypass is the first in North Somerset to be part of a major plan to improve bus services across the region. North Somerset Council works alongside the four weeks of road work begins next month on one of the main roads into Bristol.

It is the first work to be carried out as part of a major program to improve bus service across the region under what is known as a BSIP (Bus Service Improvement Plan).

The main A370 road will be renewed and a new bus lane will be created at junctions on the north side to Bristol. This will replace the current “high occupancy lane” which encouraged car sharing and when the work is complete the Long Ashton bypass will have only one lane towards the city, with cameras being set up to capture any motorist entering the bus lane creeps.

LABOUR CANCEL PUBLIC MEETING ON NEW BUS SERVICE

We are very sorry to inform you that the Labour-run West of England Combined Authority (WECA) has cancelled the public meeting we had organised to let local residents learn more about the new WESTlink bus service. The meeting was due to be held at the Hungerford Community Centre this evening (Thursday 30 March). With the introduction of this new bus service literally days away, this would have been a great opportunity to explain how it would operate and answer questions from bus users. Instead, the WECA officer leading on the new WESTlink service has been ordered not to attend for reasons unknown. We are extremely angry and disappointed that the meeting has been cancelled at such short notice, leaving members of the public with many unanswered questions.

Dozens of residents have been in touch with us in recent weeks, concerned about the loss of their existing bus services and now they can’t even get information about the so-called replacement.

If we want people to leave their cars at home and use the buses, this sort of incompetence and chaos is not going to help.

POLYSTYRENE WASTE ON BRISLINGTON HILL:

We have been appalled by the amount of polystyrene construction waste from Gilton House blowing all over Brislington Hill. Despite repeated requests to the council to get it sorted, the problem persisted. According to the council, the contractors have now taken steps to reduce the amount of polystyrene particles produced. They have also delivered a letter to surrounding houses, shops and businesses to apologise and to explain the measures being taken to resolve and control the situation. The work is expected to be completed by mid April.

CRUMBLING WALL ON BATH ROAD:

The perimeter wall that runs alongside the pavement on the A4 Bath Road adjacent to Lynwood Park is quite seriously eroded in places and recently, stones have come loose and are lying on the pavement, a potential trip hazard for pedestrians. We are worried that unless repairs are undertaken soon, deterioration will continue, with potentially serious consequences - the wall is supporting quite a lot of earth on the Lynwood Park side. We have written to Sovereign Housing and they have promised to ask their maintenance team to arrange an urgent visit to investigate and provide an update on the outcome of this.

CRANE REMOVAL:

We have been asking Clarion Housing Group when they intend to remove the cranes at the Boatyard development on

The cranes are no longer needed as the structure is largely complete, so their removal is long overdue. We have been told that one of the cranes is due to be dismantled next month, which will likely lead to some traffic disruption. We will let you know as soon as we have more information. Hopefully, we can then get the footpath, cycle path and bus lane reinstated.

UPGRADING STREET LIGHTING TO LEDS ACROSS THE CITY:

Around 29,000 of our old street lights are being upgraded with the latest LED lanterns. As LEDs are much more energy efficient and last a lot longer than current sodium bulbs, it should save the council up to £2 million a year in energy and maintenance costs. The project does not include replacing the lighting columns, so it will be relatively quick and simple to upgrade Bristol’s street lights. The entire project will take around three years to complete. There will need to be some traffic management in place for work on main roads, which could mean temporary traffic lights in some areas.

The council will let people know about the works starting in their area a few weeks before. This will be through posters on street lights. Some households may also receive a letter that sets out the day the works will be carried out on individual streets and asking them to leave around 3 metres of space around lampposts on the day to allow the lifting platform to access lights along the street. It only takes around 20 minutes to change each street light over to an LED lantern so disruption should be kept to a minimum. STAR BEREAVEMENT SUPPORT TRAINING:

The STAR Bereavement Peer Support Training Programme has received funding to continue delivering its training courses over the next 6 months.

The training is offered FREE to anybody living/working in Bristol, North Somerset & South Glos. Here are the start dates for the course, which is delivered via Zoom, and consists of 4 modules each delivered as a 2-hour workshop over a four-week period. (same time each week for 4 weeks):

* Wednesday 5th July, 10a-12noon (ends on 26th July)

This free training guides local residents and community workers through the process of setting up their own bereavement peer-support group in Bristol, North Somerset or South Gloucestershire. These groups will be resident-led, self-sustaining, free of charge and open to anyone aged 18 or over. The training is based on the successful model of the STAR (Share, Talk and Remember) bereavement peer-support group in Stockwood in Bristol which provides free support for people grieving from a bereavement or difficult transition in their life. The course is particularly aimed at local residents who are interested in setting up a bereavement peer-support group in their local neighbourhood and community workers who can support them with this. DOWNEND CAR PARK TO GET FACELIFT

The Co-Op car park in Downend is poised for a makeover to benefit shoppers and local businesses.

South Gloucestershire Council has come to an agreement with the landlord of the Willows Shopping Centre, Downend, to make improvements to the area based on recent advocacy efforts by Frenchay and Downend’s conservative councillors.

These improvements include planting new green walls on walkways connecting High Street and Co-Op, as well as resurfacing and reconfiguring parking bays. Charging points will be installed for electric vehicles and new signs and seating areas will also be included.

And the councillors are even hoping to see a farmers’ market on site at some point in the near future.

Cllr Ben Burton, Conservative ward member for Frenchay and Downend on South Gloucestershire Council, said: “These improvements are just what this area of Downend needs.

The Co-Op car park is very well used and these additional features will ensure that the High Street and surrounding area continues to be a pleasant place to visit.

“And if we can get a farmers’ market here as well, that would really be a fantastic addition to the numerous things that Downend already has to offer.”

Cllr Liz Brennan, who also represents Frenchay and Downend on South Gloucestershire Council, said: “I’m delighted to see these plans come forward and will be excited to see how the area will look once they’ve been installed.”

Like all car parks in South Gloucestershire, parking will remain free.

These improvements are being made in response to feedback from the public following the publication of a questionnaire by the Council, and will be implemented later this year.

PORT OF BRISTOL BOWLING CLUB NEWS

After seven male Presidents over a period of almost 53 years the club has its first Lady President. Flo Grimes has accepted the invitation to take office and will serve for the next three years. Flo has been at the club for a number of years, bowling regularly and making contributions in numerous ways. She holds two other offices --- Women’s Delegate to the Gloucestershire Association and she is one of two Safeguarding Officers at the club.

The office of President is very much what each President makes it but wearing the splendid chain of office and presenting trophies and prizes at the annual Presentation Evening is one essential duty.

The club operates for 52 weeks of the year --- not just when bowling on the green is taking place between April and September.

Social events on Sunday Evenings from October to March --- alternating between skittles and excellent quizzes devised and presented by Gordon Dimond bring people together and also generate much needed income for the club during the Winter Months when money is still being spent and none coming in.

A much awaited and looked forward to event each year is the Winter Bowling Break which for several years now has been at the splendid Toorak Hotel in Torquay. This year’s break was from March 5th to the 10th and saw thirty bowlers, families and friends head down the M5 for five days of not only bowling on the hotels great four rink indoor arena but much more including a night of ten pin bowling --- still at the hotel --- and a visit to the Theatre in Babbacombe for a wonderful colourful variety show.

There was lots of time to enjoy all the facilities on offer at the hotel and to explore Torquay and the surrounding area. Some bowlers went to the Jungle Journey Adventure Golf --- not far from the hotel and really good --- 18 holes and every one a challenge. Wild animals ---- not real ones, looked on as would be golfers toiled to make the ball disappear into the hole!! It was all great fun and very different from bowling!!!

At the end of another very enjoyable week Thursday evening was time for joint organisers Dee and Gill to make presentations to winners, those who contributed in some way and ---everybody had something. There were prizes for top bowlers and for top players at Ten Pin Bowling. Stephen Ash was this year’s top man bowler and Flo Grimes Top Lady ---- both were very surprised. Dave Chilcott was top man at Ten Pin Bowling and Allison Ash was top lady. There was this year a separate prize for those bowling with an aid and that went to Carol Maby. Another successful and highly enjoyable week came to an end with some folk taking in the wonderful KB Sounds and other happy with a drink and a hand of cards. Hopefully it will all be repeated in March 2024.

Looking ahead to the new outdoor bowling season ---- there will be lots of bowling to enjoy from Mid April until Late September. Forty mixed friendly games --- some home and some away --- on Wednesday afternoons and at weekends.

Men’s and Ladies Bristol Leagues from the end of April and Club League on Monday evenings from early May.

There will be Club Competitions and participation in County Competitions by individual members and the Men’s League Team this year.

Bristol After Stroke Club will be at the green on Thursday June 15th ---- they came in 2022 and really enjoyed it. It was great how well some of them bowled.

There will once again be Junior Bowling and this year the hope is to build what there already is into a Junior Section of the club. Letters have been sent to a number of local Primary Schools inviting them to the green for a free bowling session.

The club will also provide bowling for children and young people who attend the main clubs Summer Holiday Activities sessions --- mainly in August.

INTERNATIONAL CHILDREN’S BOOK DAY 2023

Helping to bring their imagination to life, books inspire, educate and encourage children to exercise their mind.

International Children’s Book Day 2023 is designed to do just that and celebrate reading.

Taking place on 2 April 2023, International Children’s Book Day is this year sponsored by International Board on Books for Young People Latvia. The Board decides on a theme for the event in addition to an author from that country writing a personal message to the children of the world to inspire them to read.

A poster to help publicise the event is designed by an illustrator from the sponsorship country too. The slogan for this year’s event is the small is big in a book‚with the message to the children written by Inese Zandere. Inese is a Latvian poet and editor, in addition to an author and publisher of children’s books.

Reading books can help a child to learn and develop, and this can be difficult in certain parts of the world due to deprivation. However, International Children’s Book Day can help to provide resources for those children through various events in schools and communities that they may not have had access to otherwise.

Not only does it encourage children to pick up a book and read, no matter what age they are, to celebrate International Children’s Book Day, but it can help to influence their habits for the future.

WEB BARBERING BOSS REFLECTS ON CLOSE SHAVE

The co-founder of a mobile barbering service has revealed how the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank (SVB) in the USA sent shock waves that have affected many UK businesses.

Giuliano Dore, founder of Get Groomed, Mobile Barbers has no funding from the bank, but his UK-based barbering business felt the fall out.

He said: “Many of our clients are startups with no access to other banking facilities other than SVB UK’s arm and could have been obliterated overnight.

“Providing in-office barbering services to start-ups is the cornerstone of our business, so the knock-on effect could have been disastrous for us.”

It is reported SVB UK had around £7 billion in deposits and 3,000 customers: more than a third of startups having no access to other banking facilities.

“When I heard the news about the run on the bank on March 10, and knowing the over-reliance by start-ups on SVB UK, it was a worrying time,” added Giuliano.

“Stock markets were tumbling across the globe and start-ups were bracing themselves for the worst. We were holding our breath because we were at risk of losing some of our biggest clients.

“Fortunately, a plan was reached and SVB in the UK was saved through a deal with HSBC and thankfully we didn’t face any disruption, but it was a long weekend for us.” Giuliano co-founded Get Groomed Mobile Barbers with Sabrina Vjaykumar in London in 2017 offering haircuts, wet shaves and beard trims in homes, offices, and hotel rooms across the capital.

“A big part of our business is to provide beauty services as an office perk; obviously we took a hit due to covid but we’re now back in full force and enjoying the ‘buzz’.

“A lot of companies have changed their back-to-office policy to include hybrid and flexible working and see barbering as an employee benefit to help motivate their teams.

In their own case, Giuliano and Sabrina decided against the venture capital route in favour of self-funding over fears they would be pressured to grow the startup too quickly.

Get Groomed now operates in London, Manchester, Birmingham, Kent and Guildford, Surrey, providing barber on demand services to corporate and individual private clients.

BEST PLACES FOR SPRING FLOWER WALKS

When that spring sun's out and the birds are singing, it's time to put on your walking shoes! Where better to go moseyin' around than the stunning Bristol landscape?

ASHTON COURT

Another estate where you’ll no doubt encounter a vast array of plant life and wildflowers galore, Ashton Court Estate is even home to its own impressive spread of bluebells, located at Rownham Wood which can be located on Bristol City Council’s map of the estate.

Add to this the estate’s deer park, mansion house and stunning views and you have a must-walk spring adventure.

PRIOR’S WOOD IN PORTBURY

One of the best places to see bluebells (from late April), Prior’s Wood is located in Portbury and boasts a “wildlife-rich ancient woodland with streams and a wonderful bluebell display in spring”. According to the Avon Wildlife Trust, it spans some 62 hectares and is free to enter, with dogs allowed on a lead.

Parts of Prior’s Wood date back to the 1600s and are very close to the type of woodland that developed after the last Ice Age, about 10,000 years ago. Just ensure that you refrain from picking the bluebells as they are a protected species.

WESTON BIG WOOD, NEAR PORTISHEAD

This woodland near Portishead is also known to be a great area for bird watching, as well as for its array of wildflowers. Avon Wildlife Trust advises visitors that access to paths is uphill and paths can be steep and muddy at times.

However, the scenery is worth it - the trust advises: “In springtime the ground is covered with wood anemones, violets and masses of bluebells.”

LOWER WOODS, SOUTH GLOUCESTERSHIRE

Covering almost 700 acres, Lower Woods is one of the largest ancient woodlands in the entire South West region, located near the village of Wickwar. According to Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust, which manages the site, otters have been known to play in the stretch of the Little Avon river that runs through the nature reserve.

It’s another in this list where you can spot a bluebell or 10, among other wild flowers, too.

OLDBURY COURT ESTATE/VASSALS PARK

Oldbury Court Estate is a free parkland in Fishponds with woods, riverside paths and even a children’s play park. It’s also close to the nearby Snuff Mills park and community garden. You’ll no doubt spot an array of flowers and other wildlife as you stroll along the river.
