The history of Santa Claus As Christmas approaches, children around the world have Santa on the brain. They're anxiously wondering if they've been overly naughty or sufficiently nice, and eagerly daydreaming about their potential gift hauls.

But exactly how did the jolly, bearded North Pole resident evolve into the cultural icon we know today? Here, seven interesting facts about his evolution into Father Christmas: 1. He was real... sort of Folklore may have turned Santa Claus into a toy distributor who mans a sleigh led by eight flying reindeer, but he is actually based, loosely, on a real person. Born around the year 270, St. Nicholas was the Bishop of Myra, a town in what is now Turkey. He earned a reputation as an anonymous gift giver, by paying the dowries of impoverished girls and handing out treats and coins to children — often leaving them in their shoes, set out at night for that very purpose. Since his death, Nicholas has been canonized as the patron saint of children.

4

2. He's only been 'Santa Claus' for 200 years. A Dutch tradition kept St. Nicholas' story alive in the form of Sinterklaas, a bishop who traveled from house to house to deliver treats to children on the night of Dec. 5. The first anglicizing of the name to Santa Claus was in a story that appeared in a New York City newspaper in 1773. 3. Satire first sent Santa down a chimney In his satiric 1809 book A History of New York, Washington Irving did away with the characterization of Santa Claus as a "lanky bishop," says Whipps. Instead, Irving described Santa as a portly, bearded man who smokes a pipe. Irving's story also marked the first time Santa slid down the chimney. 4. "Twas the Night Before Christmas" introduced the reindeer Clement Moore's 1822 poem A Visit From Saint Nicholas — which is now more commonly referred to as "Twas the Night Before Christmas" — was first published anonymously in the Troy, N.Y., Sentinel on Dec. 23, 1823. The 56-line poem introduced and popularised many of Santa's defining characteristics — chiefly, that he drove a sleigh guided by "eight tiny reindeer."

5. Coca-Cola created the modern Mr. Claus When Father Christmas first began showing up in illustrations, he wore many different colored robes: Green, purple, blue, and brown, among others. Beginning in the late 1800s, it became popular to outfit Santa in a red suit. Artist Louis Prang depicted him that way in a series of Christmas cards in 1885, and The New York Times reported on the red garments in 1927. But the modern image of Santa Claus as the jolly man in the red suit was seared into American pop culture in 1931, when artist Haddon Sundblom illustrated him that way for a widely-circulated campaign for Coca-Cola.

6. The department store Santa is a 120-yearold tradition-In 1890, Massachusetts businessman James Edgar became the first department store Santa, according to The Smoking Jacket. Edgar is credited with coming up with the idea of dressing up in a Santa Claus costume as a marketing tool. Children from all over the state dragged their parents to Edgar's small dry goods store in Brockton, and a tradition was born. 7. Santa was a bachelor until the late 1800sThe first mention of a spouse for Santa was in the 1849 short story A Christmas Legend by James Rees. Over the next several years, the idea of Mrs. Claus found its way into several literary publications, like the Yale Literary Magazine and Harper's Magazine. But it wasn't until Katherine Lee Bates' widely-circulated 1889 poem Goody Santa Claus on a Sleigh Ride that Santa's wife was popularized. ("Goody" is short for "Goodwife," or "Mrs.")

Bristol has one confirmed case of the Omicron COVID-19 variant.

All close contacts have been identified by The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), advised to take PCR tests and are self-isolating as they await their results. Director for Public Health and Communities Christina Gray, said: “UKHSA has informed us of one confirmed case of the Omicron COVID-19 variant in Bristol. All close contacts have been identified and informed that they are required to self-isolate for 10 days. “We continue to work closely with UKHSA and our local partners to protect the health and safety of local people, however, we should expect to see more cases in quick succession in the coming days and weeks. UKHSA are publishing regular reports which are available on GOV.UK. We understand that this report may also include numbers of possible cases, which are likely but not yet confirmed by a laboratory. “The preventative and protective measures for Omicron are the same as for existing variants. Please remain cautious and follow the well-known precautionary actions and behaviours including; washing your hands, covering your face, fresh air and ventilation. “You must wear a face covering, unless you are medically exempt – this is now legally required on public transport, in taxis and in shops and other public settings. Even when it’s not mandatory, we strongly recommend that you wear a face covering, especially if you’re somewhere enclosed where you may come into contact with people you do not normally meet.

20

“Both PCR and lateral flow (rapid) tests are picking infection from the Omicron variant, which is positive. If you’re heading into town to do some Christmas shopping, going to a social event or somewhere you might be mixing with people in crowded, indoor places, please take a lateral flow (rapid) test. This is equally important if you’re visiting a friend, family member or loved one who is more vulnerable to serious illness from COVID-19. “If you’re feeling unwell, stay at home and recover safely – don’t spread it around. If you have any COVID-19 symptoms, however mild, self-isolate immediately and book in for a PCR test. “Most importantly, come forward for your vaccination if you’re eligible. There is still time to get your first dose and second dose if you haven’t already. If you’re eligible for your COVID-19 booster vaccination or your flu jab, please come forward. The more people that are vaccinated, the more everyone is protected. “I also want to remind you about being conscious of the risks of international travel. New guidance is in place, including the requirement to take a PCR or lateral flow (rapid) test at least 48 hours before returning to England from abroad, as well as in the 48 hours after arrival. You must self-isolate until you receive a negative test result – no matter your vaccination status. “By continuing to follow these precautionary measures, we can protect our communities and those most vulnerable. Every action, however small, makes a difference.”

Get into The Christmas Spirit Just in Time for The Holidays So, don’t worry if you’re just not feeling Christmas today. Wanna know how to get into the Christmas spirit? Just take a read of our top 8 tips — enough to make anyone sing “Deck the halls!”. 1. PRESS ‘PLAY’ ON YOUR FAVORITE HOLIDAY MUSIC Mariah. Nat King Cole. Frank Sinatra. Ariana Grande. There’s no judgement here! Whoever sings your favorite Christmas anthem, now is the time to lean on them.

No matter the films you choose, get comfy and prepare for a back-to-back helping of festive feel-good. You’ll be amped for Christmas in no time.

Nothing fast-tracks you into the holiday spirit quicker than a festive sing-along. So, head over to Spotify, or wherever you stream your music from, and select one of the many Christmas-themed playlists — the perfect backing track to any of the following festively fun activities. 2. DECORATE THE CHRISTMAS TREE Let’s face it. Stepping through your front door and seeing the warming lights of a Christmas tree — that really is magic, isn’t it?

4. BAKE Think about it for a second: which aromas really remind you of Christmas?

But you need to be a little strategic about when you put up your Christmas tree, if you want it to last until January 6th.

Perhaps its mulled wine, or pine trees, or — most likely — its gingerbread, roasted chestnuts, Christmas cake and cinnamon.

Most trees will drop their needles within about four to six weeks of being cut. So, as it’s already mid-December – go for it!

So, bring your house to life with all those indulgent festive scents, not by heading down to a local candle store, but by rustling up a tray of delicious baked treats.

3. BINGE A FESTIVE BOXSET

And you don’t need to be a culinary whizz to get them right. Christmas cookies simply need flour, butter, sugar and your preferred Christmassy flavoring (we’re big fans of coconut snowballs, if you’re asking).

As with Christmas music, whatever you deem to be a festive film, is whatever you deem to be a festive film. Some take a classic approach, favoring Miracle on 34th Street. Others prefer a slightly left-field approach, choosing Die Hard or Gremlins. And you know what? The film you watch doesn’t even need to be set at Christmas time, to get you in the holiday spirit. Perhaps it simply came out around Christmas and so reminds you of the festive excitement of childhood; the Lord of the Rings trilogy is one that springs to mind. 22

5. HOST A CHRISTMAS GET-TOGETHER FOR YOU AND YOUR FRIENDS At its heart, Christmas is a time to spend with those near and dear to you. And what better way to do that, than by throwing a special Christmas party? After all, having the same friend-dates can get boring after a while. A festive bash is the perfect excuse to blast out your new favorite playlist and show off your holiday-inspired baking skills.

Scratch below the surface, and you’re sure to find a number of worthy causes right on your doorstep. So, go on, silence The Grinch that’s lurking inside you and volunteer your time to spread Christmas joy to those who need it most. And, guaranteed, you’ll feel better for doing so.

Even better: organise a secret Santa in your friendship group. Set a financial limit (say, £10 or £15) and enjoy the interrogation process of trying to work out who had who! 6. INDULGE IN CHRISTMAS SELF-CARE Sure, spending time with friends and family is what Christmas is all about. But it’s also a really important time to catch your breath and reflect upon everything else that’s happened in the year so far — especially if you’ve been feeling low on energy. Whether you survived a breakup, hooked up with a new boy or girl friend , or won a lot more clients at work, you’ve probably done a lot of stuff to be proud of during 2021. That’s why you should find time to indulge in a little Christmas self-care; a quick pre-Christmas makeover at the hair salon, or just cracking open a good bottle of wine. Make yourself feel as fabulous as you deserve to feel this Christmas — coz, honey, you’ve earned it! 7. VOLUNTEER YOUR TIME TO A LOCAL CHARITY OR COMMUNITY CAUSE

8. PUT EXTRA EFFORT INTO WRAPPING YOUR GIFTS Unless you’re uber-organised, then wrapping gifts will be one of the last things you’ll do to get into the Christmas spirit. Thing is, sitting down and dedicating time to gift-wrapping each present is meditative, therapeutic, and oh-so Christmassy. So, this year, why not make an extra effort? Whilst, you do want your friends and family to know how much you care…. you also want to be environmentally friendly in your approach. So, your challenge is this: what can you do, to decorate your gifts in a unique and special way, without relying on plastic, foil or excess packaging?

After a brief pause for self-reflection, it’s not uncommon to realise you want to do something to give back to your local community or help those in need. And the holidays are a fantastic time to do this. Not only because everyone deserves to feel love at Christmas, but because this is the key time that many part-time volunteers gather together, creating an amazing atmosphere at soup kitchens, homeless shelters and animal refuge centers across the country.

Focus on Brislington West

Focus on Brislington West:

Arnos Court Park improvements:

Thanks to our army of volunteers, we have almost finished delivering our latest newsletter to every household in Brislington West. We believe it is important to keep in touch with local residents on a regular basis. Thank you so much to all our volunteers who helped us with this task. If anyone would like to deliver some leaflets in their area every few months, please get in touch. If you live in Brislington West and haven’t received your community update, get in touch and we will get one to you.

On Thursday, 16 December, we will be planting our new A4 Bath Road perimeter hedge with the help of local schoolchildren. It will be a native species hedgerow of 200 saplings funded by One Tree Per Child. Over time it will provide both a visual barrier between the busy A4 Bath Road and the park and a pollution screen to help clear up our air. We will also be holding a litter pick at the same time and in the evening there will be festive carols with a local choir. There’s so much happening in our local park. The plan to increase payments to foster carers follows on from the launch of Bristol City Council’s Corporate Parenting Strategy which pledges to ‘care for those who care’ and make sure ‘children and young people are nurtured by carers and workers who are well-resourced, valued and supported’.

The changes will also help promote fostering in Bristol and make our local offer more attractive for those considering joining us. We encourage all our fellow foster carers to get involved and give their feedback, to ensure the process is inclusive and reflective of our hard work.”

A consultation is now live asking for feedback on proposed increases in financial rewards for foster carers and proposed changes to the requirements they need to meet. The consultation closes on Thursday 20 January 2022.

All foster carers in Bristol currently receive a weekly allowance for the child they are caring for to cover the costs of food, toiletries and all other expenses. In addition to the allowance for the child, some foster carers receive a weekly fee in recognition of their time, skills and experience.

Councillor Asher Craig, Deputy Mayor with responsibility for Children's Services, Education and Equalities, said: “We are proposing to invest an extra half a million pounds each year to improve our financial offer to foster carers. We hope that it will not only help recognise how much we value our foster carers, but might also attract people to join us and help improve the lives of many more children in Bristol. “We have also recruited additional staff to the fostering service so that we can improve the on-the-ground support we offer carers from day one. We hugely appreciate our foster carers and wish to retain the skills and experience the service already holds within its foster care network. The views of current and prospective carers are extremely important, and we hope to hear from many of you on the proposed changes that we believe should help break some of the barriers to fostering.” Mark and George, local foster carers in Bristol, said: "The proposed changes to fostering fees will mean the difference we make to the lives of children is recognised further. 26

There are currently three levels of weekly fees paid to Bristol foster carers and the amounts paid at each level are the focus of the consultation. There are no plans to change the weekly allowance for the child, Bristol Intensive Therapeutic Support Programme (BITSP), or Special Task Allowance. Find more information on our Fostering Fees consultation and take part in the survey at Fostering Fees Consultation website.

Medieval café launches new menu after vital electrical works completed

Located in what is thought to have been the entrance to castle’s great hall, the café is now able to offer a full menu including breakfasts, brunches and lunches, as well as barista drinks and a range of snacks.

With the launch of the full menu, the café is now also offering a 10 per cent student discount, NHS discount and Blue Light Card discount on production of a valid identification card.

The café launched to a welcoming reception in September this year, following 18 months of work to restore the Scheduled Ancient Monument, a status given to nationally important historic buildings. However, with this status came further challenges such as upgrading the electrical systems and voltage capacity of the building in order to run the brand-new kitchen.

The council already operates seven cafés and kiosks across Bristol, with the income used to help fund the cost of maintaining the city’s parks and green spaces.

Cllr Ellie King, Cabinet member for Public Health, Communities and Bristol One City, said “We want Bristol’s parks to be places that are welcoming to all and provide spaces where people want to visit and enjoy. Park cafés provide focal points for communities and act as hubs for many local groups. I’m delighted to see this unique and striking addition to a much-loved part of the city thriving.”

28

Catering Business Manager Jayne Grocock said, “All of our cafés support local food producers and proudly offer sustainable and healthy menu options. We are working towards achieving a Bristol Eating Better Gold Standard award for the Vaulted Chambers Café, which many of our other cafés and kiosks have already achieved”. Blaise Castle Estate Café, another café run by Bristol City Council Parks & Green Space Catering Team, was awarded a Bristol Eating Better Gold Standard award only this week. ENERGY PERFORMANCE KEY TO GETTING THE BEST PRICE FOR HOME “It means that more than ever before it is worthwhile upgrading energy efficiency as it could proive lucrative when reselling. As members of the Guild of Property Professionals we have access to all the latest statistics, and we take these into account when someone asks for a valuation. “Of course, location and style of the house are key with many North Somerset villages fetching a premium but increasingly the Energy Performance Certificate is a factor that is impacting on value. We believe it will grow even more in importance in time as more and more houses achieve the higher ratings. “In North Somerset now the average house price is £307,733 but stock levels are low and there is not much to choose from if you are looking for any particular house type.” Mr Simmonds says that home owners should consider looking at ways to improve their EPC rating if they are looking to sell in the next year.

32

The energy efficiency of a house is now a major factor in how much it will fetch when it is put up for sale, say experts at Parker’s Estate Agents in North Somerset. How well insulated and energy efficient a home is could make a difference of 13% in the price it fetches in the North Somerset area. Media reports of the COP26 summit have focussed people’s attention on the environment and energy efficiency of homes and now 75% of homeowners say the Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) is important or very important when they are searching for a property. Although 90% of new build properties now boast the highest A or B rating only one in 14 resale properties reach that grade. Andrew Simmonds, director at Parker’s Estate Agents in Backwell, said: “With the average house in North Somerset seeing a 12.4 per cent increase in value in the last year it means that those with a low D rating will be valued at last year’s prices.

250 free ‘winter warmer’ goodie-bags to keep South Gloucestershire residents cosy this year Warm and Well’s team of Energy Advocates are putting together 250 free ‘carebags’ for South Gloucestershire residents at risk of being confined to cold homes this winter. With heating bills on the rise, the risk of winter respiratory illnesses high and the increasingly cold weather, Warm and Well are providing free cosy home comforts alongside practical energy saving items and advice, to help people through this winter. The will be distributed via South Gloucestershire Council’s frontline services, Sirona Care & Health and local services such as foodbanks. The bags include blankets, socks, gloves, hats, LED lightbulbs, a thermos flask, thermometers, top energy saving tips and meter and radiator keys, alongside other helpful items. Both individual and family-sized bags have been made available to suit the household’s needs. Energy Advocate Mike Ellaby outlines how important simple strategies can be for coping with colder months. “The winter can be a worrying time for many people with homes that are expensive to heat – but it’s extremely important that we stay warm over this period. We hope that the freebies in these carebags will not only help people beat the cold – but remind them that Warm and Well care about their health and the warmth of their home at wintertime, and are here to help.” The team have put together 100 to date and are distributing them to households with partners at Sirona Care & Health. Katie Rademaker an Active Ageing Health Visitor at Sirona said: “The bags are wonderful! We will be offering them to those we visit on behalf of the Energy Advocate team and we know they will be appreciated. We have already given some to the District Nursing team to share with people in their care.”

34

South Gloucestershire Council Cabinet Member for Adults and Housing Cllr Ben Stokes said: “It is so important to stay warm and well during the colder months, for your physical and mental health and wellbeing. Energy costs can be a concern for people, which is why Warm and Well are in place to offer free, independent advice to those who may be struggling with bills or want to know what they can do to keep warm while reducing their costs. I would encourage anyone worried about themselves or perhaps a neighbour or relative to get in touch with them to get help and information.” The funding for the winter warmer packages has come from the Energy Redress fund, providing crucial support at a time when energy prices are rocketing. Stay warm and well this winter, and call 0800 500 3076 or email advocate@severnwye.org. uk if you need help with your home energy or bills. Warm and Well is a home energy advice service delivered on behalf of South Gloucestershire Council.

Rugby for Heroes receives £1,000 donation from David Wilson Homes South West A Gloucestershire charity which uses rugby to help ex-military personnel transition back to civilian life has thanked a local housebuilder for its £1,000 donation and challenged other businesses to match it. Rugby for Heroes, which offers support from the local rugby community for people facing difficulties when they leave the Armed Forces, has received the funding from David Wilson Homes South West, which is building several new communities in the area. The charity has already seen an increase in requests for support since the UK forces' departure from Afghanistan, and is now calling on other businesses to support them. They are currently working to raise £10,000 to run their next week long intensive course for ex-military personnel, many of whom are living with PTSD, mental health issues or physical injuries. The rugby course teaches vital and core skills to enable men and women who have served in the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines to become coaches and help to source employment opportunities. Alongside this, the charity also provides a support network of people who understand the challenges ex-military personnel may face. 36

The coaching course costs £10,000 to run and is the only course of its kind in the UK due to its high intensity training style. Unlike other coaching qualifications which can take months to obtain, the course is completed and the Level 2 qualification obtained in one week Alan Lamb, founder and head of fundraising of Rugby for Heroes said: "We are very grateful for David Wilson Homes' donation which will help us provide support for ex-servicemen and women transitioning back to everyday life. We're calling out to other businesses to match this support to help us run the next course for around 14 people. We've seen an increase in demand for our services in the last year, with more inquiries already coming in following the departure from Afghanistan. There are many parallels between rugby and the military and when the time comes for a person to leave the Armed Forces, we believe the rugby community can offer a range of support and a sense of belonging to our returning heroes that is easy for them to relate to."

David Wilson Homes South West, which is building the nearby homes of Merlin Gate at Newent, is making the donation through its community fund, which provides monthly funding awards to local causes in the South West. Louise Ware, sales director for David Wilson Homes' South West division, explains: "We are so pleased to be able to help Rugby for Heroes with the inspiring work they do helping people leave the armed forces tackle the challenges of settling back into civilian life. We have quite a few residents in this area we've been able to help buy a home with our special armed forces discount and it seems fitting to be able to give some extra help to this community who often need help to adjust when they leave their close-knit community in the military." The housebuilder offers a 5% deposit contribution (up to £15,000) to all Britain's military servicemen and women on the purchase of their new home, through their Armed Forces Deposit Contribution Scheme, read more here: www.dwh.co.uk/offers/ armed-forces-deposit-contribution/

Together with its sister company Barratt Homes, David Wilson Homes donate £3,000 every month to local causes in the South West as part of the company's commitment to supporting the communities where they are building new homes. David Wilson South West have now launched the show homes at their new development Merlin Gate, offering three and four-bedroom homes in the historic town Newent.

WORKING FROM HOME TIPS FOR PRODUCTIVITY AND WELLBEING With the homeworking trend set to continue, it’s more important than ever before to stay productive and manage your wellbeing effectively. To help you achieve this, we have prepared some top-tips for feeling good and excelling at work, while working from home. CREATE AN EFFECTIVE WORKSPACE As comforting as working from your bed or favourite spot on the sofa sounds, selecting a space specifically for work will increase your productivity. If possible, choose a separate room with a good source of natural light, which can become your dedicated home office. Using different spaces in your home, like this, can help to create a physical distinction between working and relaxing, making the boundaries between home-life and work-life much clearer. If this option isn’t available to you, opt for a space in your home which is furthest from household noise and distractions. SET YOUR DESK UP CORRECTLY AND MAINTAIN GOOD POSTURE For employees who spend several hours each day at their desks, looking into the ergonomic factors relating to your desk set-up is a must. Making small enhancements to workstations can have a wealth of benefits, from reducing the likelihood of lower back pain and tension headaches, through to increasing energy levels and boosting confidence. Try to follow these steps from the NHS for setting up your desk to improve comfort, posture and productivity whilst working from home. TRY TO LIMIT DISTRACTIONS AT HOME While there are many benefits to working from home, it can introduce a number of new distractions to contend with. It might become tempting to start household chores during work time or to turn on the TV whilst at home. To overcome these potential distractions, try to allocate a certain time for completing housework and ensure that your workspace is clean and tidy, ahead of the working day. Instead of turning on the TV, try listening to music instead. Research from Harvard Medical School explains how listening to certain types of music at different times can boost your mood, reduce stress levels and enhance cognitive performance. Not only will you overcome a distraction, but you will discover a solution that boosts productivity instead! 40

DON’T BE CONSUMED BY SOCIAL MEDIA As more time is spent on devices, one of the most popular sources of distraction comes from an increase in social media use, which can become addictive without the usual boundaries that limit access in an office environment. If you’re losing too much time to social media, our team suggests logging out of your accounts during working hours or turning off notifications, especially on mobile devices. In addition, removing social media links from your desktop browser can help to reduce temptation and encourage you to make a more conscious decision about when you would like to browse and publish updates there. SET HEALTHY BOUNDARIES WITH YOUR HOUSEHOLD It’s easy for family members, friends and flatmates to forget that while you’re at home, you’re also working. To maintain healthy relationships and minimise disruption, have a conversation with your household in advance so that they are aware of your working hours and appreciate the type of environment that will support your arrangement. If it isn’t possible to follow your usual pattern, depending on individual circumstances, modifying your working hours and responsibilities might be an option. Discuss this with your line manager in the first instance and communicate any changes to your colleagues and professional network, where required. If your hours do change, we would also recommend updating your diary to manage expectations and help you to maintain the boundaries between your work-life and home-life. START THE DAY OFF RIGHT BY GETTING READY FOR WORK Whilst there is no pressure to ‘get ready’ when you’re working from home (unless you have video calls scheduled), it’s a good idea to change out of your pyjamas and maintain usual levels of grooming and hygiene. In the same way that setting aside a space for work helps to establish boundaries, getting ready in the morning will help you to adopt a professional mindset, while signalling that your working day is due to begin.

BRISTOL BUSINESSES SHOULD CONSIDER WORKER’S COACHES Businesses in Bristol should consider running their own staff transport to cut carbon emissions and enable people to get into the city when Bristol’s Clean Air Zone is introduced in summer 2022, says one of the region’s biggest coach operators. Bakers Dolphin, which runs holidays and schools transport, say coaches can provide the answer to reducing emissions and getting cars off the road. Max Fletcher, Managing Director of Bakers Dolphin said: “The days of one person to a car and major rush-hour jams need to end. There have been some fantastic initiatives to encourage cycling and car sharing and public transport schemes are constantly being changed, but the coach has been ignored. “It is time that firms who want or need to maintain their city office or retail bases looked at coaches that could bring their staff in efficiently and in an environmentally-sound way in the same way that we operate to many schools in the region. “Car drivers are constantly being told that they should cycle or walk. That works well for some but distance, bad weather and disability rules it out for others. Public transport is also difficult for some because of timings, routes or cost. 42

“With businesses spending money on shower facilities, cycle parking and reimbursing spiralling car parking costs it is time to look again at using coach operators as part of the solution.” Bakers Dolphin, which was established in 1889, has constantly changed to meet the demands of the public and now operates a fleet of coaches that can transport people en masse with much lower emissions than private cars. The firm has formed a corporate division aimed at supporting local businesses with their transport needs and able to bring people into Bristol from North Somerset and South Gloucestershire to work in the city. Said Max Fletcher: “At the moment a lot of people are still working from home and we all know that the landscape of the workplace has totally changed. We want to work with employers to provide solutions for them along the best routes that their team require. This will have the effect of cutting the number of vehicles on the road, cleaning up the air and supporting the businesses towards their own emission-reduction targets.”

Bristol Charities launches search for new CEO

Current leader will continue to develop plans Bristol's first multigenerational centre for living and working before handing over to her successor in spring 2022 One of Bristol's oldest charities has launched a search for a new CEO following the highly successful tenure of its current leader. Bristol Charities is a registered UK charity which provides opportunities and support for people and communities to improve lives through grants, housing and charitable projects in Bristol and South Wales. Current chief executive officer Anne Anketell has led the organisation for eight years with key achievements including the merger of two of Bristol's oldest almshouse charities; the building and opening of a state-of-theart extra care housing scheme, Haberfield House in Stockwood; and purchasing and developing a new vision for the Vassall Centre, Fishponds. Anne will continue to lead the team of architects, planners and Bristol Charities' trustees and partners to develop the next stage of plans for the Vassall Centre, for discussion with tenants, stakeholders and the local community ahead of planning application next spring.

44

Proposals for Bristol's first truly multigenerational centre include much-needed, affordable, contemporary homes for older people; high-quality affordable homes for families, along with accessible, contemporary workspace for businesses and charities and a range of new community facilities. Anne is actively involved in the recruitment of her successor and will be on hand to ensure a smooth handover and transition before she leaves the organisation at the end of April 2022. Bristol Charities' trustees would like to thank Anne for her dedication, vision, significant achievements and her enormous contribution to supporting elderly and vulnerable people and their communities. Chair of trustees, Richard Gore said: "We are hugely grateful to Anne for her hard work, creativity and highly successful leadership of Bristol Charities, helping us to grow the charity to support more elderly and vulnerable people and deliver many more much-needed, modern and affordable homes for older people.

"This is a fantastic opportunity to join Bristol Charities' leadership team to continue our transformation and take forward ground-breaking projects to improve and enhance the lives of people in need in Bristol and the surrounding areas."

Anne Anketell, chief executive officer added: "It's been an honour and privilege to lead Bristol Charities throughout the last eight years. During this time, we`ve been on a journey of transition and incredible growth completing just over 90 new homes with another 48 in development. "This, alongside our successful Grants Programme, has been a great achievement for Bristol Charities. Whilst I am sad to be going, I know I`m leaving the charity in the hands of an enthusiastic, committed and supportive board of trustees and a dedicated team of staff who work so hard to make a difference to the people we support." The selection and recruitment of the new CEO is being managed by Moon Executive Search.
