The still life of disparate objects and textures is signed and titled verso by labels and inscriptions in the artist’s hand.

Paintings by Robert Elton Tindall of Kansas City and Independence, Missouri are quite rare. Only a few examples have been documented, and only one record of his work having been offered at auction.

In 1940, Thomas Hart Benton organized a show with the Associated American Artists in New York for what he considered to be his most talented students of the previous two years. The catalog for that exhibition lists four works by Robert Tindall (50. Pumpkin Vine, 51. Stop. Look, Listen, 52. Old Gem, 53. Winged Victory) Add to these a few pieces that were sold from Tom and Rita Benton’s estate, plus a few others for sale at Kodner Gallery in St. Louis - the total number of paintings known by this talented artist equals 15 or less.

Before his studies at the Kansas City Art Institute, Robert Tindall earned a BA and MA at the University of Kansas. Between 1940 and 1950 he participated in group exhibitions from Denver to New York, and in the decade that followed. he enjoyed a number of one-man shows and exhibitions around the Midwest. 6 :: WILBUR NIEWALD (1925-2022) STRAWBERRY HILL OIL ON CANVAS

Wilbur Niewald (1925-2022)

Across the Kaw (Strawberry Hill) (Circa 1965)

This early to mid 1960s abstracted landscape by one of Kansas City’s most prominent and influential artist/educators is signed and titled verso on the stretcher in felt tip marker.

The title and the topography of this composition are grounds for suggesting that the view depicted here is that of Kansas City Kansas’ Strawberry Hill neighborhood just across the river from Kansas City, Missouri. A number of those in her group wanted to try farming and found a good farm for sale out in mid Kansas. We bought this, two hundred and eighty one acres, and let them have a crack at running it. They are doing extraordinarily well.”

Apparently the farm’s lone worthwhile landmark was this barn which Benton portrayed in a 1972 lithograph and a 1973 painting, the latter being on view now at the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art.Wilson chose to paint the barn and barnyard as well, with some modifications.

An inscription verso on the frame liner reads “This was identified by Marianne Berardi and Henry Adams as The Benton Farm. It was in show at Albrecht Kemper in 2004.”

The exhibited oil on canvas by the prolific and popular American artist William Gropper is signed lower right front and titled verso by a label from the Galleries of Associated American Artists. An exhibition label for The Carnegie Institute exhibition ‘Painting in the United States, 1944.’ is pasted verso as well.

This is an outstanding example of William Gropper’s penchant for imagery that deals in irony, humor, and biting social commentary. Here he portrays the patrons of a gallery opening as caricatures dressed more for a society cocktail party than a museum opening. The majority are depicted with their backs to the paintings, though one couple does seem intrigued by a section of driftwood on display. The large portrait of an ambiguous figure holding something like a butterfly net looks on with an expression of strange amusement.

A few years after this canvas was painted, Bibel took to poultry farming because, as he put it, .’we wanted to eat.’ It wasn’t until around 1960 that he would resume painting with any consistency.

William Gropper’s biography is a rich and interesting one. Having quit school as a teenager to help support his family he, without any prior instruction, began to draw and sketch and paint on paper as well as the flat surfaces of his surroundings, including walls and sidewalks. These early, informal sketches led to his being invited to study drawing in night classes at the anarchistic Ferrer School in New York where he became acquainted with more than just the principles of good draughtsmanship. His political leanings were not difficult to discern.

After winning some prizes and recognition for his cartoons in the succeeding years, he began to find ways to make a living with his art. By

The mid 1930s he had received mural commissions and by the time of this painting, he was recognized as a serious artist participating in many of the most prominent exhibitions of the day at major American museums, which adds to the irony of this work. This painting was exhibited in the a show with works by major American artists like Georgia O’Keefe, Edward Hopper, Milton Avery and Thomas Hart Benton.

The works were sent to Washington to decorate government offices, and hospital rooms later.” The artist went on to recall of this period, “Under government-sponsored competitions, I was awarded $20 per square foot to paint murals in small post offices in three states to commemorate local history.” Two of those murals he mentions were in Arkansas. The evocative composition of African American laborers handling cargo along a waterfront is signed lower right front in black pigment. The subjects and composition of this work are closely related to a major painting by Joe Jones titled Roustabouts, now in the collection of the Worcester Art Museum. The Cleveland Museum of Art, the Denver Art Museum, the Detroit Institute of Arts, the National Gallery of Art, the Saint Louis Art Museum, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, and the Whitney Museum of American Art all hold paintings by Joe Jones in their collections.

Joe Joseph John Jones was a prolific painter, lithographer and WPA muralist. His strong left leaning sensibilities motivated his focus on the American Scene and Social Realism in his paintings. He sought to document the struggles of workers, particularly African American workers, and to portray and protest the racism they endured. He did so with in various ways. For instance, in the painting Roustabouts a rotund white man wearing

a Panama hat looks down on a number of defeated looking workers. Every black man in the composition has their head down, including those in motion who strain against the weight of the cargo they’re charged with moving, highlighting the inequity of the times.

Throughout history, particularly in the 1930s, the terms ‘roustabout’ and ‘roughneck’ where used as a label for unskilled workers who performed general labor, such as loading and unloading cargo.

My Dear Mrs Cazalet,

Do you think The Queen would sit for me at Windsor week-ends for an informal portrait? It would be wonderful if she would and I would have it in my show in America which Francis Taylor is organising. I would stay in some pub and no doubt there's a suitable room in the castle for painting. If she had a pretty costume with a hat I'm sure it would be a success and probably put Poppet in the shade. Please, please, propose it to Her Majesty. Francis Taylor is taking all my beloved drawings and things away (many of which I tore up by-the-by in a fit of madness, but he has pieced them together again!)

Yours affectionately, Augustus.
