2 :: DOEL REED (1895-1985) SCARCE OIL ON CANVAS
(Second quarter of the 20th Century.)
The large oil on canvas in an interesting and varied palette is signed in red pigment lower left and displayed in a very fine custom frame.
Oil paintings by Doel Reed, especially works this large, are rarely offered at auction. Those that have appeared are typically views of the American Southwest from Reed's later Modernist period. This slightly more impressionist work displays a style and topography suggestive of the artist's career prior to his taking a position as instructor of art at Oklahoma State University.
After studying and working in architecture, and prior to serving in World War One, Dole Reed studied at the Cincinnati Art Academy. He returned there to study and teach after the war. It's worth noting the similarities between the painting being offered here and a landscape by Lewis Henry Meakin (1850-1917) his instructor at the Academy. While Meakin is primarily credited with introducing Reed to printmaking, the landscape up for bid here bears a striking resemblance to the composition of Meakin's 1915 canvas titled Evening Rain.
After his time in Ohio, Dole Reed took a position as head of the Oklahoma State University art department in 1924. A position he would hold until his retirement in 1959. Following retirement he moved to Taos, New Mexico where he lived until his death in 1985.
Over the course of his career, Reed participated in more than 300 juried art exhibitions and was elected to the National Academy
of Design for his achievements as a printmaker, specifically the medium of aquatint etching, for which he is considered a master.
To this day, OSU's Dole Reed Center in Taos honors his legacy with cultural and educational programs, workshops and residencies that serve the arts community both locally and nationally.

Ms. Koen was an Illinois artist who traveled the world, eventually settling in Mexico later in life. Paul Strisik was a very prolific and talented artist who became a signature member of the American Watercolor Society, and an Academician of the National Academy of Design. Among the various strengths of his paintings are the skillful portrayal of varying effects of light, atmosphere and weather, which Strisik rendered with a keen sense of observation and an impressionistic touch. 7 :: ENDRE SZASZ (1926-2003) MIXED MEDIA ON ARTIST'S BOARD
The mixed media with glazes and gold leaf is signed lower left in black pigment.
This fine example embodies pretty much all of the artist's greatest techniques, including the glazed porcelain-like surface of the face, Klimtinspired gold leaf, sgraffito embellishments, and other techniques of mixed media that, when executed in the incredible detail Szasz accomplishes, makes for an interesting work with intriguing detail.
Endre Szasz was a Hungarian born painter, illustrator, graphics artist, and ceramics decorator. He was, according to the biography pasted verso, born in Transylvania in 1926. He participated in his first exhibition at the age of 15 and later studied at the University of Fine Art in Budapest. He began working as an illustrator in the 1950s and created imagery for more than 300 books. The artist's acquaintance with Salvador Dali most likely was an influence on his work. The two were not only friends, but shared an agent, which exposed Szasz to some of the same contacts and opportunities as Dali. Given that both artists kept an ocelot as a pet, it's pretty clear that Endre Szasz was influenced by his fellow surrealist, if not in art, at least in lifestyle.
Board measures 15.5 x 11 with a framed size of 24.5 x 19.5 inches.
Very good condition. There are no chips, scratches or areas of inpainting.

9 :: FLORENCE JOSYLN PAINTING 1937 TULSA WPA ART ASSOCIATION
'The Green Cafe' (1937)
The Modernist cityscape at night is signed lower left front in red pigment, and displayed in a classic molded wood frame of the period, probably the original.
The reverse of this oil on canvas is replete with information
about the artist, the scene, and the Arts community in Depressionera Oklahoma.
Florence Brown Joslyn was a widely recognized and documented Oklahoma artist and art instructor. As such, she gave talks, taught classes, curated art exhibits at the local WPA Art Gallery, and occasionally exhibited her own works. She is even credited with creating the masthead design of Oklahoma City's African American newspaper The Black Dispatch, founded in 1915. She studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Art Students League. Her works were included in exhibitions from Oklahoma to Los Angeles.
Per the label verso, this work was exhibited at the Eighth Annual Tulsa Art Association Exhibition of Oklahoma Artists, 1937, sponsored by that Association, and the WPA federal art project. The Santa Fe artist Raymond Johnson judged the show and fellow participants included Doel Reed and Lester Raymer. Raymer won first prize for painting that year.
Clearly, art and life go on during difficult times, as is evidenced by the degree of organization and support for the Arts in this part of America during the Great Depression.
Image measures 15.5 x 19.5 with a framed size of 21.5 x 25.5 inches.
Very good original untouched condition. There are no issues of major scratches, losses, repairs, in-painting or touch-up. Two dime size areas of possible touch-up lower left and right corners, under UV light.

10 :: BIRGER SANDZEN (18711954) OIL ON CANVAS DATED 1910 (1910)
The fine, large, transitional oil on canvas is signed and dated by Birger Sandzen lower left front.
At the close of their discussion on Sandzen's early period as a painter (1890 1909), the Birger Sandzen Memorial Gallery points at that he, ..'.'.was certainly influenced by Impressionism and PostImpressionism during this time period, but it does not become overly apparent until about 1910.'
This noteworthy painting, with its date of 1910, is a marker of that pivotal moment in the painter's evolution. It clearly documents the transition from his early period to a more mature period, one that has been described as, ...' the most dynamic and important of Sandz?n's career.'
The composition of this painting, wildflowers among high rock formations, is almost certainly a depiction of the geological feature near Lindsborg, Kansas, now known as Coronado Heights, one of the artist's favorite subjects.
Technically a sandstone butte that has resisted erosion over millions of years, this striking landmark rises hundreds of feet above the the Smoky Hill river valley, and the surrounding rolling plains. It became known as Coronado Heights about five years after this canvas was painted, making the title added verso a posthumous designation.
In another life, this area, indeed most of the state of Kansas, was covered by a vast inland sea that would, over the course of 100 million years, repeatedly rise and then receded, creating the picturesque landscape there today.
Canvas measures 24 x 36.25 with a framed size of 30.75 x 42.75 inches.
Very good original untouched condition. There are no issues of scratches, losses, repairs, in-painting or touch-up.
$25,000 - $35,000
11 :: ROBERT BYERLEY (19412019) OIL ON ARTIST'S BOARD
'Taley's' (1977)
The outstanding example of trompe l' oeil painting is signed and dated lower right.
Bob Byerley was a master of painting in super realism and the technique that fools one's eye into seeing three dimensions where there are only two.
He was an avid collector of antiques, and a regular at local shows and auctions. His paintings often share themes of American nostalgia like old Country Stores and vintage Coca-Cola signs, Here, he brilliantly illuminates penny vending machines from the 1930s filled with shiny red gumballs and salty Spanish peanuts. The machines, his own, or perhaps borrowed from a fellow collector, are actual period models like the classic Art Deco style Northwestern model with white enamel on geometric iron castings, and a red Columbus 'Sanichu' Model A3 with its embossed star on the glass globe.
Board measures 13.5 x 17 with a framed size of 19 x 23 inches.
Very good original untouched condition. There are no issues of major scratches, losses, repairs, in-painting or touch-up. One tiny nick from the surface at upper left corner tip.
$1,000 - $1,500

Among the various strengths of his paintings are the skillful portrayal of varying effects of light, atmosphere and weather - as seen in this painting - which Strisik rendered with a keen sense of observation and an impressionistic touch. His works also evoke a strong sense of place and time without the viewer realizing just what it is about the picture that conveys this.
Board measures 10 x 14 with a framed size of 18.5 x 22 inches. Very good original untouched condition. There are no issues of major scratches, losses, repairs, in-painting or touch-up.
$1,000 - $2,000

16 :: ALFRED MONTGOMERY (1857-1922) OIL ON ARTIST'S BOARD
'Wood Baskets with Corn' (1900)
The still life composition depicting ears of corn, each kernel depicted individually in thick impasto, portrays the bounty spilling from 'bushel' baskets of bent wood stave construction having bent wood handles secured by iron fittings.
This is a particularly bold example of the artist's trademark subject matter. The ears tumble convincingly from the basket and are bright and heavily textured for striking effect.
Ask Google, 'Who was the corn artist?' and the first entry returned reads:
'Alfred Montgomery.
An artist who called himself 'the farmer who paints and the painter who farms.'

'Evening Cove' (1978)
The oil on canvas mounted to Masonite is signed and dated by the artist lower left.
Paul Strisik maintained a permanent studio at the artist's colony town in the coastal town of Rockport, Massachusetts. This scene at low tide, with the boat at rest, could be anywhere around that area.
Per usual for Strisik's paintings, the scene evokes a moment in time. The sun is low, there is quiet, and the moment is serene.
Paul Strisik was a very prolific and talented artist who became a signature member of the American Watercolor Society, and an Academician of the National Academy of Design. Among the various strengths of his paintings are the skillful portrayal of varying effects of light, atmosphere and weather - as with this picturewhich Strisik rendered using a keen sense of observation and an impressionistic touch.

Sheet measures 23 x 31 with a framed size of 30.5 x 38.25 inches.
Obviously the condition is very good, very clean, intact, no visible stain, damage, repair, punctures or tears. This work has not been examined outside the frame.

27 :: ROBERT BEACH (1923-2005)
OIL ON CANVAS 'RAE' (1973)
Signed and dated lower right, titled within the image and again verso on the corner brace.
The texturally rich work of deconstructed realism is signed and dated lower right, titled within the image and again verso on the corner brace.
Thanks to the efforts of his family and some recent exhibitions, the work of Bob Beach is enjoying a surge of renewed and added interest. The offering of two canvases in this sale will mark his first ever appearance at auction.
Robert Owen (Bob) Beach was born in New Brunswick, Canada on December 29th, 1923. During WWII, he enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force, where he was able to exercise his passion for things with motors that travel very fast. That deep passion manifested itself again later with his collection of classic cars and motorcycles, the latter being his ride of choice well into his seventies and early eighties.
Following the War, before his work as a muralist and easel painter, Bob Beach made his living as a medical illustrator. Obviously an artist by nature, this would be an interesting application of Bob's talents. As students, artists are first taught to 'paint what you see.' This approach presents a challenge for the aspiring medical illustrator who works not with what they see, but with what they visualize after reading scientific papers, meeting with medical experts, observing surgeries, or following laboratory procedures. It's after downloading the verbal and text based data from these encounters to their minds that they then would paint what they see, the visualization they have created in their mind, expanding on their talents as an artist.
It's through the lens of these concepts that we can begin to see how Bob may have come upon this composition in his mind, and laid it to canvas. We can muse on the impetus of the imagery while enjoying the rich color, texture and visual impact.

28 :: JOHN NOLF (ILLINOIS 18721950) TWO WATERCOLOR PAINTINGS
(1944)
Each is signed lower right. The image of a fisherman is dated 1944.
John Thomas Nolf, short-term resident of Joplin, Missouri and many other locales, lived a pretty colorful life before becoming an artist. Winnings from a poker game bought him a first class ticket to Chicago where he attended the Chicago Art Institute, launching his career as an artist, an illustrator and a teacher. He is most associated with the quaint Illinois village of Grand Detour, home of the Grand Detour Artist's Colony to which he described himself as mayor. Others, it has been reported, described him as 'Will Rodgers without the chewing gum and lariat.' Biographers also report that the people and places around Grand Detour often provided inspiration for Nolf's paintings. That may explain the strong similarities of the barnyard plot in this composition, and another in this auction,
Man on the bench image measures 16 x 12, sheet is 18 x 13.75, and framed size is 26.25 x 19.75 inches. Fisherman sheet measures 12 x 15 and framed size is 23 x 27 inches.

'Cemetery at Fuveau' (Late 20th Century)
The view of a hundreds year old cemetery near Marseilles France is signed lower left front and has additional inscriptions verso.
Mark Daily has shared that what he, 'considers most important is the ability of a painting to evoke a sense of place.' The artist seems to have successfully captured the essence and atmosphere of this place, perhaps through his use of lighting, color palette and perspective. How he did it is not as clear as what the picture evokes.
Board measures 9.5 x 13.75 with a framed size of 14.5 x 19 inches.
Very good original untouched condition. There are no issues of major scratches, losses, repairs, in-painting or touch-up.

31 :: ROBERT BYERLEY (19412019) TROMPE L'OEIL OIL ON BOARD (1978)

An unsigned Art Nouveau influence pottery vase with figural nude displaying the glaze, styling, and clay body attributes of art pottery made by the Van Briggle Pottery company of Colorado Springs, Colorado.
Nearly identical examples have been found with full Van Briggle marks, though the female figure varies in a number of ways, is less artful, and the glaze is more monochromatic without the blue highlights seen here.
The most similar example to this vase was sold by Ivey-Selkirk auction house in St. Louis on November 15 of 2008 for $2000.00. That vase was listed as being by Artus and Anne Van Briggle, with the title of the piece listed as 'Spring.' The leaves on that vase were not flat molded like other examples, though they were not as pronounced as seen here.
Similar pieces referred to as the 'Anna Van' model are similar but with a completely different positioning of the figure and leaves that are molded flat in low relief rather than sculpted three dimensionally. According to some sources, the 'Anna Van' vase has
been made since around 1925.
A less detailed example in mulberry glaze, and with a more erect female figure and flat-molded leaves is pictured on the artusvanbriggle.com website page titled Early Van Briggle Examples.
The vase being offered here was purchased from Neal Auction in New Orleans in February of 2005 where it was listed as being from a New Orleans estate.

The deity is often portrayed with two serpent heads on either end characterized by horns, large, sharp teeth, and prominent eyes.. The mask can be highly stylized with intricate carvings and vibrant colors, typically in black, red, white, and green as seen here.
In further cultural context, the Sisiutl is considered a guardian spirit, and masks of this creature are used in ceremonial dances, rituals, and potlatches. The presence of the Sisiutl is believed to ward off evil spirits and protect warriors in battle. It can also represent duality, such as life and death, or the balance between opposites.

'Old Sycamore' (1941-1942)
The fine and scarce pencil signed color woodblock print circa 1941 is signed by the artist in pencil below the image lower right and titled lower left.
Though this image is from a stated edition of 100 prints, very few are known to exist. There are more in museum collections than have ever appeared at auction. In fact, only one auction record could be found, the same print appearing twice at the same auction house, once in 2011, and again in 2012. One other example was found listed as sold on the web site of a print dealer in Michigan. It appears to be the same print now held in the collection of the Minneapolis Institute of Art.
Norma Bassett Hall color woodblocks are not common. Examples in fine condition are even more uncommon, due to the prevalence of acidic mounts in the first half of the 20th century, and the medium's sensitivity to environmental factors. This is a very rare image in outstanding condition.
Image measures 13.5 x 11, sheet is 15.75 x 13, and frame is 22 x 19 inches.
As illustrated here outside the frame and mat, this print is in very good to fine+ condition: apparently the full untrimmed sheet, not laid down, no damage, punctures, tears or repair. The print is very clean and without stain, noting a brown spot at the upper right sheet edge and a blue printer's smudge.

Charles Banks Wilson's comments about the image are, 'The drummers are singing a special song for the winner of the War Dance contest. Contests are held at nearly every powwow I attend, with prize money and trophies offered to induce the better dancers to be there. I find the dances are not so much a ceremony these days as they are an art form.'

ETCHING
'Wire Mill' (1939)
The etching, numbered 60 from the edition of 60 prints, is signed by the artist in pencil below the image lower right and titled lower left.
Nesbitt described the scene as follows: 'This was the noisiest place I've ever been in all my life. You had to wear earplugs in there. The company tried to have me remove some of them, men in this piece so that their operation would look more efficient, but they finally agreed to let it stand as drawn. in Kansas City, steel is gradually getting thinner and longer. The big coils are loaded on arms, so the steel can be uncoiled as it goes through successive dies, which further reduce the diameter of the wire. The end result is the production of fence wire, bailing wire, nails, and bolts.'
Of the impetus for this series of prints documenting the industrial processes at Sheffield Steel Corporation in Kansas City, Nesbitt recalled: 'The company had called the Kansas City Art Institute to inquire about an etcher to create some images of their operations. John De Martelly and I were both recommended; but De Martelly, not wanting to spend any time on site at Sheffield, encouraged me to do it. For all the Sheffield pieces, I had to submit a finished pencil drawing to the company for approval prior to creating the etching. The original etchings were given as Christmas remembrances to VIPs both in and outside of the company and were offered for sale to the employees.'
Turns out, Nesbitt spent a great deal of time on site at Sheffield detailing their massive works in more than sixteen different complex images completed during the 1930s, plus six more during the late 40s and early 50s.
Image measures 9 x 12, sheet is11.75 x 13.75 inches.
