Historical evidence showcases that the craft has been practised here since the Chola period (850 AD - 1250 AD) even though the sub-continental craft of lost wax casting is said to date back to 2500 BC. A group of traditional Sthapathies or sculptors had migrated here after being employed in the construction of the big Temple in Tanjore. They had settled here after discovering that the alluvial soil found here was ideal for their craft. For generations, the sculptors have followed the ancient scripture called ‘Sirpa Sastra’ which has naturebased specifications for various parts of the icons. For instance: The eyes are to be modelled after fish, the hands after an elephant trunk etc. To this day, ancient measurements are adhered to and are measured traditionally by coconut fronds The exquisite craft involves making a detailed wax model figurine and creating a clay mould over it. Upon heating, the clay mould ‘loses’ the wax through an opening and the molten bronze metal is then poured into the mold. After cooling down, the mold is then broken to reveal the bronze icon within. This is then worked upon to give finesse and fine detailing. As the mould is lost in making, no two finished pieces will look similar. The result is truly Divine!

Madras Cricket Club A legacy that lives

You can take an Englishman out of England but you cannot take cricket out of his blood. The Madras Cricket Club stands testimony to this fact. By the 18th century, the British had established themselves in India and cricket matches were played in India, as early as the 1720’s. The Englishmen also set up clubs in India where they could socialise with their fellow Englishmen and relax. To them, these were little pockets of England in India. In Chennai, Alexander J Arbuthnot set up the second Cricket club in India – the Madras Cricket Club in 1846. He was only 24 years old at the time and went on to have a long and illustrious career in India. | May 2022 | Discover Chennai 29
REWIND Initially, matches were played on ‘the island’ but when the club requested that the land be made theirs permanently, the request was denied by the Government. A little later when Lt. Pennycuick , the Club secretary (an engineer ,who went on the construct the Mullai Periyar dam in his later years) made a similar request, a piece of land in Chepauk was granted to the club. The land had earlier been acquired by the Madras Government at the death of the Nawab of Arcot, Nawab Ghulam Ghouse, and had been part of the Chepauk palace and its surrounding gardens. The club made a beautiful cricket ground here. What is a cricket ground without a pavilion? It was in 1866 that the original pavilion was designed and constructed for the club by Robert Fellowes Chisholm. He designed it in the Indo Saracenic style that was prev-

alent among the British architects in India then. This style is characterized by open pavilions, pointed arches, miniature domes, scalloped arches etc. In the year 1877, the club reluctantly had to vacate the Chepauk premises due to the construction of the Buckingham canal which had to cut through the east portion of the turf. They moved back in 1879 but due to the alterations done to the grounds, the pavilion was now unsuitable. A cyclone which destroyed the pavilion and made it unusable brought matters to a head and a new pavilion was designed by another famous British architect, Henry Irwin and was in use from 1891. The MCC had strict rules and dress codes and codes of conduct to maintain the exclusivity of the club. An interesting anecdote about the club is connected to Daniel Richmond, the president of the club who organized the first ever Test match in Chepauk. The men who were
REWIND guarding the gate had been briefed to not let anyone in without either a badge or a ticket. His rules were followed so well that on the morning of the first match when Daniel himself forgot to bring his badge he was not allowed inside by the implacable guard!
Today, only a few of the relics from the past and very little of the original structure still exists but the spirit of the club remains the same.
