In the past two years, Johnson County Community College Pharmacy Technicians have also participated in rotations. Cedar Creek Pharmacy new location with same quality service began November 9th.

Lori Murdock has been De Soto’s Pharmacist since 1992. She will continue serving our community within the new HARPS Grocery Store that recently opened on November 9th. Cedar Creek Pharmacy is located inside HARPS at 34040 Commerce Drive (in the front, left southwest corner of the store). You’ll find the same “fast, friendly, reliable and personal service” that you have grown accustomed to over the years. The natural medicine products will continue to be an important part of the pharmacy, as well as a drive-up window, which is visible on the left side of the HARPS building. “This has been good for both of us,” said Lori Murdock, owner and pharmacist. “HARPS worked extremely well with me and met my needs. It is a good match, as both have a strong hometown philosophy.” HARPS, an employee-owned business, is proud of their stores, which may include a pharmacy. They are a company that works with communities and negotiated with Cedar Creek Pharmacy prior to building. “They were gracious to offer this opportunity,” said Lori. “Their location gives Cedar Creek Pharmacy much more visibility, and allows me to build on my programs of health and wellness.” They rearranged space to accommodate the natural health products that are an important part of Cedar Creek’s health care treatments and alternatives. These include various homeopathic remedies, dietary supplements and vitamins. “Natural medicine” is Cedar Creek’s niche specialty, providing individual consultations to provide information and educate you in helping you make informed health decisions.

The Harps name signifies quality. Locally, Johnny Chapman, is the De Soto HARPS Store Manager. Johnny began his career with HARPS in Mountain Home, Arkansas. He was 16 years old and carried out groceries. He attended The University of Arkansas and received his degree in Business Administration. Leaving Fayetteville he became the Grocery Manager of HARPS in Joplin, Missouri. The following year he became the Store Manager in Jasper, Arkansas.

Johnny Chapman’s staff in De Soto includes five department heads: John Graybill, Meat Department; Connie Philippeit, Grocery Manager; Ryan Tinsley, Deli/Bakery Manager; Austin Strickland, Produce Manager, and Bryan Thompson, Merchandise Manager. Four of the managers have transferred from other HARPS stores, and one is a new employee–each with a wealth of experience to bring to De Soto. HARPS brings over 60 new jobs to De Soto. You’ll find an informative printed circular when you enter HARPS that will introduce you to our new grocery store in our community. Direct mail pieces will be initially distributed, with advertising circulars that will become part of the Kansas City Star. “HARPS Customer Appreciation Days” will occur at a later date. Visit www.harpsfoods.com where you’ll also find a wealth of information. Champman, store manager, says, “We look forward to working with the community and to exceed expectations. The early beginnings of HARPS...

Harvard and Floy Harp founded Harps in 1930. They started the first store with $500 in cash that Harvard had saved while working in the citrus industry in California. The first store was Harps Cash Grocery and was located in Springdale, AR. Over the next 34 years they remodeled, expanded, and moved to bigger buildings as their business continued to grow. By the early 1950’s, Harvard and Floy’s oldest son, Don, had joined them in the business. In 1964 Harps became a small chain when the second store was opened in North Springdale. By the mid 1960’s, Don’s brothers, Gerald and Reland, were also involved in managing the Company. Don became CEO and President in 1968 at the death of his father and continued to guide Harps until 1994. Gerald Harp assumed the duties of CEO and President in 1995 when the Company purchased Don’s stock, and at the same time, purchased a ten-store chain. In 2001, the Company did a leveraged buy-out with the Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) purchasing outstanding stock from the family and management. Once again the leverage of the Company increased substantially. After spending the next four years reducing debt, Harps began rapid growth through acquisition and new store construction. Kim Eskew was named President in 2008. Since becoming employee-owned, employees have seen amazing growth in their stock. Harps is the largest employee-owned company headquartered in Arkansas. –excerpts from “Our History” http://www.harpsfood.com/custom_retailer/history/ photo from Harps web site

Cedar Creek Pharmacy in the Medical Clinic on Lexington Avenue

After graduating from KU, Lori worked at Lawrence Memorial Hospital as a pharmacist. In February of 1992, Cedar Creek Pharmacy opened its doors in the Medical Clinic built by Dr. Inzerillo on Lexington Avenue. Lori was the pharmacist in charge. In October 2004 she purchased the business from Lynn Quiring. In 2008, Cedar Creek Pharmacy moved to a small medical complex at 8960 Commerce Drive, where local physician Charissa Richard and physician assistant James Boyer practice. Moving “around the corner” on Commerce Drive, Lori looks forward to continuing pharmaceutical care for both her longtime friends and the new customers this move will bring. She is excited for the growth HARPS will bring to De Soto and their high standards they bring to the community. Lori not only has provided a caring community pharmacy for many years, but also has expanded that concept outside of “business hours.” She is graciously involved in many facets of the De Soto community– City Council Member, Rotary President, facilitated the De Soto Food Pantry, and was Committee Chair for Boy Scout Troop #54. Kudos for all that you have contributed to De Soto and all the best as you move forward in your new location.

Nostaligic history of De Soto’s Pharmacies...

The 1883 history reports two drug stores in De Soto and it has never been without one. However, in 1946, when Oscar Kobler bought it from Foley, its nature changed with changing times. No prescriptions–but as most such stores nowadays, and there are thousands, are called SUNDRIES. It is a strange paradox, that in the days when physicians carried most of their own medicines, there were more prescription departments, than since they carry almost none. In 1906 or 07, B. C. Culp built a drug store and bank building, where the bank now is. It burned in 1912, and the next year he built the large building on the southeast corner of Second and Wea, and carried on there. After his death, his wife tried to carry on, but her health failed. She sold it in 1917 to A.C. Cook (who was on the board which built the High School Building), who sold, I believe to Mr. Gaynor, and he in turn, to James Foley. In the early 30’s, he bought and remodeled the old Taylor Store east side, and made it an up-to-date store as it looks today. With the influx of SOW, the heavy strain broke his health and he sold out January 1944 to Tague and Thompson. Two years later, Oscar Kobler bought it and made it KOBLER SUNDRIES. As most parents know, from then on, it became the social center of town for the youth. If you couldn’t or can’t find your youngster, “Call the Drug Store, 16”, and more than likely they’ll be there. And it has been so conducted that you need not worry about them, for if they get out of line, Oscar bawls them out, they take it and come back for more.

Wanda’s–A special place to feel at home

De Soto

Eat and savor the food and fellowship at this delightful hometown restaurant.

Nearby suburban residents and locals enjoy country cookin’ at Wanda’s Roadside Cafe in De Soto. It was established on January 7, 2012. Wanda moved in and found a home–for both herself and the community. Wanda Riedhart, owner and awesome cook, of Wanda’s Roadside Cafe, “fell in love with De Soto, its community and great schools.” Wanda’s is a place reminiscent of your grandma’s house with lots of great home cookin’. There is time to chat, and greet people with a warm hug– much needed in today’s world. With a solid background in culinary, Wanda says, “My restaurant experience began as soon as I was big enough to push a broom.” She grew up in a family restaurant environment out on the west coast. In El Paso de Robles, Wanda worked for 15 years at the Pasa Robles Inn–an area of California wineries, olive oil and almonds. She also worked in the restaurant business at Laughlin, Nevada, along the Colorado River. Her kids brought her to Kansas. She first opened a diner in Colony, Kansas, in between Iola and Garnett. She liked the idea of “homemade food.” Her daughter had moved to De Soto, with her husband who is from the area. “My daughter and Loya [Berry] are the reason the restaurant is here,” said Wanda. They kept encouraging Wanda to come to De Soto. Things began to come together. “We didn’t have a grill...and in the next 24 hours it was provided,” said Wanda. She knows this restaurant was meant to be. In addition to the hometown atmosphere, there is really great food! I personally can vouch for the wonderful homemade pies, generous portions of breakfasts and dinners. And the mashed potatoes and beef are so warm, tasty and tender...great comfort food! “I don’t want you to leave my house hungry,” says Wanda. She likes to keep her food local and fresh–with meats from Steve’s Meat Market, produce from Bowlin’s Farms and other local vendors. Wanda’s, located at 33080 W. 83rd St. in De Soto and is open Wednesday-Sunday 7 am to 2 pm. Frenzels BBQ is served Saturdays 4 pm to 8 pm. –written by Rose M. Creation • Christ and Christmas

and called the light “day” and the darkness “night.”

from GENESIS 1:3-5

De Soto

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through Him all things were made... In Him was Life... and the light of men. The light shines in the darkness and the darkness has not overcome it. The Word became flesh and dwelled among us. from John 1:1-14

The Holy Bible–Scripture is compiled of verses interwoven with “golden threads” that show God’s divine hand throughout His Inspired Word. For ten years I have designed Desktop Calendars, each with a different “thread” or theme. I have loved studying Scripture and seeing how God’s Word unfolds. It is always amazing how the photos and Scripture verses come together, as I sense God’s hand interweaving them. Themes have included: Country Fields & Rural Posts, Fields & Meadows, Trees of the Field, Streams of Waters, Joys & Blessings, Every Good Path, The Skies Declare the Glory of God, Celebrating Life and Along the Roadside. As I was writing this article, I found the very first calendar I did in 2007 with the same photo from this year’s “LORD of all Creation 2017 Desktop Calendar. This was especially worshipful to compile and work on. Threads of God’s beautiful work of creation begin in the book of Genesis and continue throughout the Bible. When you take a close, introspective look at our world–the skies do declare the Glory of God, man is fearfully and wonderfully made, there is a delicate beauty and design observed throughout creation. An intriguing description of God’s greatest work is tucked away in the Old Testament in Photographed at Rock Springs 4-H Camp 2016 by Rose M. Burgweger

Proverbs 8:22-31 alluding to Christ’s presence at creation: “The LORD brought me forth as the first of his works, before his deeds of old; I was appointed from eternity, from the beginning, before the world began. When there were no oceans, I was given birth, when there were no springs abounding with water; before the mountains were settled in place, before the hills, I was given birth, before he made the earth or its fields or any of the dust of the world. I was there when he set the heavens in place, when he marked out the horizon on the face of the deep, when he established the clouds above and fixed securely the fountains of the deep, when he gave the sea its boundary so the waters would not overstep his command, and when he marked out the foundations of the earth. Then I was the craftsman at his side. I was filled with delight day after day, rejoicing always in his presence, rejoicing in his whole world and delighting in mankind.” To prepare your heart during this Advent Season consider reading “CHRIST before the Manger” by Ron Rhodes. De Soto Baptist Church ADVENT WORSHIP:

DYM–De Soto Youth Ministry Open Mic Night for all ages

De Soto

The four Sundays leading up to Christmas Day and the Christmas Season in the life of the church are a wonderful foundation upon which to build both continuing and new opportunities and participation. Each Sunday of Advent is designated with a specific reminder of the changes brought into our world at this time: Hope * Peace * Joy * Love. Each service of Worship focuses on the designated word for the week. These will be introduced by Pastor Richard Copeland on November 27th at the 11 am Worship Service, with a major focus on Hope. On December 4th, there will be observance of the Lord’s Supper, with a focus on the Peace we can find through acceptance of Christ into our lives. Joy is the word for December 11th, and this will be beautifully exemplified by the “Jr. Joys” Choir under the direction of Mrs. Tami Reeves, presenting their traditional program of Christmas music and drama. At 1:45 pm the Adult and Youth Choir, under the direction of Mr. Jeff Hodges, will perform in the Atrium of Crown Center. December 18th focuses on the celebration of Love, as made known through the coming of Christ into our lives and world. Pastor Copeland will present his longtime tradition of dramatization of a Biblical character as he portrays Simeon, the devote man told by God that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Christ. This was fulfilled as Mary and Joseph with Jesus entered the temple on the 40th day after His birth. At 7:00 pm the Adult/Youth Choir will present the traditional Christmas Cantata “Voices of Christmas”, preceded by the instrumental ensemble of Winds and Brass playing Christmas carols from the Balcony. Reception will follow, and children of all ages will look forward to the “special visitor” who comes with the traditional sacks of oranges and candy! On Christmas Day, Sunday, December 25th, one Worship Service will be held at 11 am (no church school classes on that day). The service will feature a variety of music and other elements to honor and celebrate this important date in our Christian journeys. Looking ahead, the traditional “Celebration of Love Banquet”–which benefits our Love Gift Fund of local, regional, and national outreaches will take place in February. More information will be available on the church website www.desotobaptistchurch.com –submitted by Mary Etta Copeland De Soto Baptist Church

Holiday pet tips...

De Soto

Pet owners should be especially careful about food that is out and accessible to their pets during the holidays. Digestive upsets that cause intestinal disease are frequently seen this time of year. Tinsel on your Christmas tree can cause serious intestinal problems if your cat injests. Chocolate and certain plants such as mistletoe can be toxic to pets. When choosing stocking stuffers for dogs, avoid raw hides and chews that can be eaten quickly. Many times these get stuck in their upper intestinal tract or can be contaminated causing stomach upset and vomiting or diarrhea. Try to purchase chew bones that are for the aggressive chewer. These will provide hours of chewing enjoyment for your pooch. Above all, remember the holidays can be stressful for your pets. Don’t forget to give them all the love and attention they continue to deserve.

The flu season begins as

the weather changes. The flu can occur throughout the year, but the virus tends to circulate from late fall to early spring. It spreads from person to person through droplets, such as when someone coughs or sneezes. When gathering with family and friends this season, make sure you’re protecting yourself and your loved ones from getting the flu.
