Welcome El Patron to De Soto

The long-awaited opening was on October 9th. Extensive reconstruction done throughout the building contributed to delays. You’ll enjoy the well done transformation that adds to a great Mexican atmosphere. The handmade tables were done by Manager Valente Hernandez and his sons, and the tile was purchased locally. “We are happy to get this great location in the very good community of De Soto. We look forward to establishing El Patron and becoming an important part of the community,” says Noel Ortiz, owner of both the De Soto and original Balwin location, which opened five years ago. El Patron Mexican Bar & Grill is located in the former Taco Bell/KFC building on West 91st Street. Outdoor patio, Drive through window and meeting areas are available.

HARPS–Open One Year in De Soto, Kansas

I remember the incredible excitement of the Grand Opening of Harps on Wednesday, November 9th, 2016. Everyone in the community was there and it was a monumental moment! Alot of joy in getting a very nice grocery store in De Soto. Harps has over 85 stores in Arkansas, Missouri and Oklahoma. De Soto is its first Kansas location, with Harps largest 32,000 square foot store format. De Soto’s Cedar Creek Pharmacy also moved its location inside Harps last year. Discovering De Soto featured Harps throughout its 2016 issues and the many groups, businesses and individuals who were involved in the process. www.issuu.com/discoveringdesoto On Discovering De Soto’s Facebook Page, residents were asked recently “What do you love about Harps?” Here are some of the posts: I’m head over heels for the wonderful baked goods and delish chicken...Everything is excellent...We are so blessed to have them in our community...The hometown greetings from staff... Love not having to drive out of town anymore... Thank you for adding the pharmacy. I can get drugs and food in one excellent stop... Great chicken, delicious stuffed pepper salad...having a hometown grocery store...a great selection of produce and good prices on their meat... they did an AMAZING job catering Winesong! ...they offer lots of gluten free items ... The muffins are fantastic! The staff is always helpful and friendly! ...they give back to the community...They are so supportive of our schools! Harps Community Giving to De Soto began at the Grand

Opening, when a check for $2,250 was given to the De Soto Schools representing gift cards of $1,000 to De Soto High School, $750 to Lexington Trails Middle School and $500 to Starside Elementary. This will continue yearly, for Harps first five years in De Soto. Last year during the Holidays, Harps donated approximately 700 pounds of hams to the H O M E T OW N F R E S H De Soto Food Pantry. Day-old bakery items are also donated. Visit us in De Soto! Harps sponsors the De Soto 34040 Commerce Drive High School Rocket Team. 913-585-9876

The City Council has begun discussions on an overhaul of the City’s long-term capital planning process. n Fire Hydrant Flushing Program Underway

The City of De Soto and the Northwest Consolidated Fire District have begun implementation of a fire hydrant flushing, maintenance, and testing program throughout the City. You may see them operating hydrants and valves, and notice water running down the street. This program is an important preventative maintenance activity we undertake to maintain the integrity of the water system and allow us to continue to deliver the highest quality water possible to our customers. The primary purpose of this program is to verify the proper operation of the city’s fire hydrants through periodic inspections, flow testing, and preventative maintenance. Secondarily, a proactive hydrant flushing program is the key to mitigating water quality related aesthetic problems by removing accumulated iron and manganese mineral deposits from the water line. Fire hydrant flushing may cause temporary inconveniences such as a reduction in water pressure and aesthetic issues such as discoloration of the drinking water. Discolored water poses no threat to the public’s health, but it will stain laundry and if consumed may have an unpleasant taste. Residents should be certain all discolored water is out of their home’s plumbing and hot water heater prior to laundering clothes or drinking. If you notice discolored water coming from your fixtures please flush the cold water side for approximately 5 minutes. Although residents may experience some temporary inconveniences, the flushing program is necessary to maintain a good water supply for both firefighting and domestic purposes. Your cooperation with this program is appreciated. If you experience continued loss of pressure or water discoloration, please contact the City’s Water Superintendent, Doug Smith at 913-238-0434.

n Water Distribution Shop Building Construction

As part of a multi-year effort to rehabilitate its water treatment and distribution infrastructure, the City is making plans to construct a 3,300 square foot shop, storage, and office facility at site of the new water tower at 95th and Sunflower Road. The new facility will house the City’s water distribution staff and equipment. Construction will start in the coming months, and should be complete by next summer. Once completed, the site will offer a centralized location for maintenance operations associated with the water system. The building will include about 700 square feet of office space, 1,350 square feet of internal shop and storage space, and 1,250 of covered storage.

DeSotoYouth Ministries meets with teens and have their offices. Its been a vibrant ministry sharing God for over 27 years, led by Bill and Donna Wilting and various staff. One water sprinkler head malfunctioned on July 31 pouring water through the attic, flooding much of their building and saturating equipment, furniture, walls and floors.Very discouraging–but very fortunate to be covered by insurance. Since that time, energy and repairs have been equally poured back into the 107-year old building. “In the process of re-construction, we are creating a new coffee shop,” said Donna. “Cause Coffee” will open to the public later this year. Their daughter, Tara Stucky, created the concept and looks forward to operating the coffee shop, fulfilling her own passion for DeSoto Youth Ministries and missions. It is amazing what has transformed from the damaging waters. –Rose Burgweger (complete article and photos in the next issue)

ARTS & MUSIC

Exploring

De Soto has a long-time tradition of fine music in both their choral and band departments. With the upcoming Holiday Season,“it’s easy to become overwhelmed and stressed,” says Mindy Fry, Choral Director at De Soto High School. “But music has a way of relieving all of that. Sometimes a certain song helps you remember a special time in your life, or maybe the lyrics help you to focus on what is most important. One thing is for sure, coming together for an evening of fellowship and music is bound to send you away with a lighter heart and a smile on your face. Matt Bradford agrees, “I love this time of the year when we can focus on the Spirit of the Season, enjoying good family time together and the music of Christmas.”

De Soto

The Annual De Soto High School Holiday Concert will be held Tuesday, December 12 at 7 pm All former Choral Students are invited to join in the long-time tradition of the Hallelujah Chorus

Rose Burgweger does rural and inspirational photography with a painterly feel. She used to work with photographers as a senior graphic designer in Chicago, and in 2000 began taking her own photos. Many photos are taken right here in De Soto in the “everyday places.” Flint Hills, Florida, Bahamas, Germany/Paris have also become part of her ventures. Each year a desktop calendar is printed. Ministry materials are also available. www.rmbprints.com

Cindy Heller takes many intriguing photos. She has a unique way of capturing water drops, sprays of water and metalic reflections in nature and still life. She is a self- taught photographer and has been learning/ playing with photography for 13 years. Cindy says, “Its about seeing/capturing the beauty in the things that surround us daily.” www.barefootphotosite. com

Jim Walker has been “into this camera thing for 50+ years now” and shoots thousands of images each year. “Outdoors with my camera, searching for those scenes that attract me is what I find so rewarding and seemingly, my life’s mission,” says Jim. Doing quite a bit of traveling with his wife, Karen, gives him the opportunity to shoot photos from coast to coast. Jim and Karen have also done a fair amount of area art shows for many years. jbwalkerphotography.com

Dick Stine enjoys the beauty that is all around us– here in the Midwestern plains, the mountains, seashores, or foreign lands. He is thankful for his parents who instilled in him the desire to discover the beauty of a place. Dick shares this bit of photo wisdom, “When I eventually learned the difference between snapshots and artful photography, I determined to practice the difference in order to capture the fullness of the event.” Dick spent his working career teaching oral and written communication at Johnson County Community College. He specializes in landscape photography. dickstine.zenfolio.com

COMMUNITY SAFETY

Keep Your Home Safe Over the Holidays

Exploring

De Soto

As holiday season approaches, citizens of Johnson County are busy making travel plans to visit friends and family. If you are making plans to travel this holiday season, make sure you consider some helpful tips to keep your home and property safe. • Purchase timers for lights throughout your house and have them set to go off at random times. This gives the appearance that someone is home and should anyone be watching your house, they may take the lights going on in various rooms as someone being in the residence. • Avoid leaving hidden keys outside or in fake concealment rocks. Burglars often know how to spot these types of hiding places quickly. • Newspapers and mail piling up can be a sure sign that someone is not home. Ask a trusted neighbor or friend to stop by your home regularly to pick up the mail and any deliveries you may receive while gone. • Don’t post travel plans on social media sites. Even with the strictest privacy settings, this information can be accessed by people up to no good. • Request a House Watch. The Johnson County Sheriff ’s Office offers residents in unincorporated Johnson County, De Soto, and Edgerton this service. Deputies will conduct periodic perimter checks on the property as their call loads permit. The public can contact Sheriff ’s Office Dispatch at 913-782-0720 to request a House Watch. Residents living within city limits in the county can contact their local law enforcement to see if they offer a similar service. As always, we ask the public to remain vigilant and aware of their surroundings. The holiday season is a happy time and we do not want criminals to ruin that because we become complacent. Watch out for your neighbors and if you see anything suspicious, never hesitate to notify local authorities.

Winter Fire Safety

While the weather outside gets colder by the day, the risks of home fires and road accidents heat up during the winter months. To keep your family and property safe during this holiday season, practice fire safety by following these tips:

Exploring

De Soto

Cooking:

Heating Elements:

• Cooking is the leading cause of all winter home fires. • 905 people die in winter home fires each year. • 71% of Thanksgiving Day house fires are due to cooking.

• Heating is the second leading cause of home fires. • Never use an extension cord or power strip while operating a heater. • Keep 3 feet of distance between all heating elements while in use.

For additional questions or concerns about Safety in your Home during the fall and winter, Call the Northwest Consolidated Fire District 913-583-3886 Emergencies call 911

Traveling:

• Never warm up a vehicle in an enclosed area, such as a garage. • Do not use cruise control when driving on any slippery surface (wet, ice, sand). • Drive slowly. Everything takes longer on snow-covered roads. Accelerating, stopping, turning– nothing happens as quickly as on dry pavement. Give yourself time
