Introduction

Welcome to your October Issue Welcome to October’s issue. Just when some of us thought it was safe to call ourselves “empty-nesters” as our last teenagers head off to university, a warning has been issued, claiming that the present financial uncertainty has prompted almost 60% of UK students to consider dropping out of their university degrees. With some students returning or going to university for the first time around now, pressure and financial support group SavetheStudent claims that increasing numbers are deeply concerned their finances won’t stand the pressure of such uncertain times! Oh well, there will be plenty of jobs around the house and garden to keep them busy … oh no, they’ve already been done during the lockdown. Brace yourselves, “Bank of Mum and Dad”! Anyway, as ever, there’s plenty here to keep all of your family informed and entertained, and don’t forget to change your clocks (“Spring forward, Fall back”), as we lose the hour on Sunday October 25th.

This month’s issue combines the usual sparkling array of articles from our team of dedicated contributors. It gives us great pleasure to know that there are so many individuals who put in so much effort to ensure that their monthly contribution is not only relevant and topical, but also that it appears in such a way that you, our readers, will find it useful and, hopefully, entertaining. As the Covid-19 pandemic continues to run its tragic course, this caught my eye recently. A man was seen using a live snake as a face covering on a bus from Swinton into Manchester. Transport bosses said passengers can make their own face covering or wear something suitable, such as a scarf or bandana, adding, “We do not believe it extends to the use of snakeskin - especially when still attached to the snake.” And finally, last week I put up a world map on the kitchen wall, gave my wife a dart and said, “Throw this and wherever it lands - that’s where I’m taking you when this pandemic is all over.” Just our luck … two weeks behind the fridge! Enjoy the read!

Health

Behind the Mask... BY CLAIRE GRAY, OWNER OF RENU

Our face is the most memorable thing about us.

I

t reflects our mood, our age, our health, our personality, and some people even believe its shape can define our personality type. It is such a shame that in this “new normal” world, we now spend so much of our time with it hidden behind a mask!

If they are re-usable, wash them at 60 degrees and dry thoroughly.

2

It is even more important you follow a thorough cleansing routine daily. Cleanse twice. Tone once.

Whilst a mask is becoming increasingly important for the safety and well-being of others, it is yet another reason to make sure we are taking special care of our skin.

When your face is open to the elements, it needs protection against pollution, air conditioning, UV rays and free radicals. On the positive side, wearing a mask can sometimes help you protect your face against the elements.

3

Wearing a mask slows the skin renewing itself. This is a disaster with regard to the ageing process, managing breakouts and keeping a bright complexion. Exfoliate twice a week and invest in a facial, specific to your needs every four to six weeks. We offer specific facials for every budget for men and women.

4

Use the right skin care. It is even more important that your skin is protected against the elements and whatever is lurking inside your mask. Our therapists can help you find the right skin care for your specific needs. This is also a great time to purchase, as there are lots of extra value packs available.

Unfortunately, masks will also restrict the skin’s ability to “breathe” and whilst they can protect you from passing on viral germs, they will also harbour bacteria and germs on your face. This can result in dry, blotchy skin, more frequent breakouts, and an uneven complexion.

5

Here are my top tips to make sure you reveal a beautiful, healthy skin under your mask:

6

1

Resist the habit of keeping a mask in your bag and repeatedly putting it on and off. Have several and use a clean mask every time.

Skin repairs at night. Whatever we have put our face through during the day, it will take the time to try and repair itself at night. Day care is about protection. Night care is about repair and rejuvenation. Use a good quality night balm, specific to your skin’s needs and it will drink it up overnight. Smile with your eyes. We may not be able to show our sunny smile from behind our mask, but we can smile with our eyes! So, keep them in tip top condition using a daily eye cream and grooming your eyebrows and lashes!

Stress, Anxiety and Panic Attacks

A

nxiety can build up over a long period of time without us even realising it, or it can come on suddenly, as a result of something such as illness or a change of circumstances. Some people who have been fully in control, suddenly find they can’t cope in their daily life.

“Even the simplest task can be overwhelming at times” Anxiety and stress can manifest itself in many ways: nervousness, panic attacks, insomnia, overly worrying about something that may never happen etc. It can have a crippling effect by bringing on a range of symptoms such as depression, Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), skin complaints or negative patterns such as over-eating, drinking, smoking etc. If allowed to go unaddressed, stress and anxiety can change lives for the worst. At least one person in ten experiences panic attacks which are often triggered by a stressful or anxious event. A panic attack happens when you experience a sudden onset of intense physical and psychological symptoms. They can occur for no apparent reason or a set of circumstances can bring about an attack. You might experience

Hypnotherapy reduces underlying levels of anxiety, giving you greater control and reducing the emotional arousal. Hypnotherapy works with the subconscious brain templates and makes suggestions in a beneficial and positive way to make positive changes happen in the subconscious. an overwhelming sense of fear, dread, anxiety, or apprehension. There are often physical symptoms accompanying these feelings, including a change in breathing pattern, sweating, nausea, heart palpitations, rapid heart rate, trembling, or even a difficulty swallowing. While they are frightening, it is unlikely they will cause physical harm, but the self-perpetuating thought of having one stops us from doing the things we want to do or need to do, causing more stress and increasing the potential of having a panic attack.

“The greatest weapon against stress is our ability to choose one thought over another” The good news is that Solution Focused Hypnotherapy has been shown to be a very effective treatment for panic attacks, reducing the frequency in a short period of time, or sustained treatment will often result in them disappearing altogether.

Hypnotherapy allows guided relaxation, showing a preferred future and, because the subconscious part of the brain (the part that’s in charge of our reactions) doesn’t understand the difference between imagination and reality, the guided relaxation starts to bring calm and control back into our lives. You will learn how to prevent negative stress, how to identify increased levels of stress, and how to deal with the situation, and how to prevent it reaching debilitating levels in a positive and responsible way. Whatever the cause of stress, anxiety or panic attacks, the treatment is tailored to the individual.

“Nothing diminishes anxiety faster than action” If your stress/anxiety and panic attacks are out of control, please contact Christine who will be pleased to help.

If you would like to book an appointment or find out more about hypnotherapy, contact Christine on: 0780 9690 964 or contact@beardwoodhypnotherapy.co.uk

CHARITY MATTERS

Breast Cancer Awareness Month HANNAH’S STORY

Breast Cancer Awareness Month is an annual international health campaign organized by major breast cancer charities every October to increase awareness of the disease and to raise funds for research into its cause, prevention, diagnosis, treatment and cure. This month, we’re indebted to Bourne lady, Hannah Dring, whose battle with breast cancer is so vividly presented here, in her own words. Last October, aged thirty-one, I was diagnosed with Stage 2 triple-negative breast cancer after finding a breast lump in the shower. For eight months, November 2019 to June 2020, I completed my active treatment - fifteen sessions of chemotherapy, a mastectomy and fifteen sessions of radiotherapy. It was intense as I felt rather poorly some days, and I also lost all my hair. Fortunately, I was eligible to have a double mastectomy with immediate reconstruction, something I felt strongly about, in order to reduce my future risk as much as possible. However, because of the Covid-19 pandemic, my surgery was altered and wasn’t all classed as “essential”. I was only allowed to have my left breast removed (the cancerous side) and therefore had this done in April. I was then given the news that I’d had a complete pathological response to chemo, the best outcome as it means all cancer cells were killed in my tumour and I was officially ‘cancer free’.

What you can do to get to know your boobs.

1 Check regularly

This will help you get to know what’s normal for you. You can use any method you’re comfortable with, such as lying down in bed, standing in front of a mirror or when you’re showering.

2 Look & Feel

Remembering to check all parts of your breast, including your armpits, up to your collarbones and your nipples.

3 if in doubt, get it checked out Early detection is the best form of defence, so if you notice anything unusual for you, get it checked out by your doctor.

CoppaFeel! is a registered charity in England & Wales (1132366) and Scotland (SCO45970)

My journey has been long, hard, very challenging and is, by no means, over. I live with the fear and worry that my cancer may return, and I am still battling with the side-effects of treatment. My preventative surgery for the right breast and double reconstruction should hopefully happen later next year. I have fantastic support from my husband Dan, family and friends; my two young boys, Henry (4) and Dylan (2) are (sometimes!) the best medicine, definitely a good distraction, and they have been incredible throughout. The most important message I want to share is to encourage people to regularly self-check and know what’s normal for them. Breast cancer can affect people of all ages and does not discriminate, so please become “breast aware”. Early diagnosis really is key in the fight against this disease. Throughout my journey I wrote a blog which can be read at www.queendring.wordpress.com. Since my diagnosis, I have also become a Boobette for the CoppaFeel! charity, where I spread the important “breast aware” message through talks and presentations. Please get in touch if your school or company would be interested in this. CoppaFeel! also have lots of information and support on their website www.coppafeel.org. ”

S

limmers from Bourne and surrounding areas are making a ‘comeback’ as their Slimming World groups reopen, with Slimming World Consultants Lesley and Abi saying they’re excited to be back helping members to lose weight and improve their health.

and research of our members during lockdown has shown that, while our members have loved attending their virtual groups, they’ve missed the motivational power and accountability of meeting in person each week.

They are now putting measures in place to ensure groups comply fully with government and local guidance and that their members can return safely to their much-loved Tuesday and Wednesday Slimming World groups. Lesley says, “I’m delighted to finally be back together with my members! Our virtual groups have been a vital lifeline of support and I’m so, so proud of how my members have been there for each other through these difficult months, and continued to lose weight and get more active. Book Review

The Evening and The Morning

BY KEN FOLLETT

This historical epic is a prequel to “The Pillars of the Earth”. It begins in 997CE, a time of conflict, the end of the Dark Ages, and England faces attacks from the Welsh in the west and the Vikings in the east. Life is hard, and those with power wield it harshly, bending justice according to their will - often in conflict with the king. Into this uncertain world three people come to the fore: a young boatbuilder, who dreams of a better future when a devastating Viking raid shatters the life that he and the woman he loves hoped for; a Norman noblewoman, who follows her beloved husband across the sea to a new land only to find her life there shockingly different; and a capable monk at Shiring Abbey, who dreams of transforming his humble abbey into a centre of learning admired throughout Europe. Now, with England at the dawn of the Middle Ages, these three people will each come into dangerous conflict with a ruthless bishop, who will do anything to increase his wealth and power, in an epic tale of ambition and rivalry, death and birth, and love and hate.

Tomorrow will be a Good Day BY CAPTAIN SIR TOM MOORE Embark on an enchanting journey into our country’s past hundred years through the remarkable life of Captain Sir Tom Moore. From his humble Yorkshire childhood, via the battlefields of Burma and the peaks of the Himalayas, to becoming the NHS and the nation’s hero during Lockdown, this is a journey for all of us. Who is Captain Sir Tom Moore? You’ve seen him on the television walking the length of his garden. A frail elderly man, doing his bit at a time of crisis. But he wasn’t always like this. Where did he come from? Where was he made? From a childhood in the foothills of the Yorkshire Dales, Tom Moore grew up in a loving family, which wasn’t without its share of tragedy. Captain Tom’s story is our story. It is the story of our past hundred years here in Britain. It’s a time which has seen so much change, yet when so much has stayed the same: the national spirit, the can-do attitude, the belief in doing your best for others.

Legal Corner

Legal Services in a Modern Time ADVICE FROM ROBERT HODSON

I

t will shortly be twenty years since the turn of the century. Double and Megson, having formed in 1978, will have seen many changes in the last forty-two years. What is still true is that all of us need legal services and probably always will (even if a robot may try to play the role). It was once famously asked by American novelist, Philip K Dick, “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?” Whether a “bot” could count the issues in a legal case is a moot point. It is the communication and sensitivity that makes the difference to a client; it’s the eye contact and reassurance that count in any professional context, be it lawyer, doctor, dentist or independent financial adviser. Double and Megson believe that the provision of local legal services is best for the client. Our ‘Fee Earners’ offer rounded legal advice, sometimes crossing different legal subjects on

an integrated basis. The firm has acted over many years for local businesses and families (sometimes three generations of the same family) so knowing the solicitor is as important as knowing the client, and vice versa. It is worrying that there have been, recently, unknown characters walking the streets locally, purporting to offer advice to unsuspecting parties. If any of us needs advice we should seek out those who are both regulated and insured. Our firm believes in finding out what is at the heart of a client’s instructions and acting efficiently to find a client-focused outcome. We will always offer a down-to-earth, friendly approach to put clients at their ease. Great care and caution are required when considering what is said on the internet. Crown Walk’s New Resident

H

ow encouraging to see one of the many vacant shop premises in Bourne become occupied at the end of July! James Alexander Books has appeared in Crown Walk with enthusiastic owner, Terry Myles, happy to introduce himself and his plans. “I’ve been selling books online for many years and, after previous work in the furniture trade, I felt the time was right to set up this venture. Although my home is near Grantham and I looked at several potential locations for the shop, Bourne, and Crown Walk in particular, ticked all the boxes. Here, near to the centre of town, (off the main street so people can browse at ease and still enjoy free

parking nearby), is an ideal spot. It’s a lovely mix of neighbouring shops and everyone has been so friendly and welcoming.” Terry’s concept is a hybrid shop, somewhere between a used book retailer and a gift shop; the vintage books are displayed in a user-friendly way with cards and gifts in amongst the stands, including an attractive range of greetings cards from Draw, the Sussex-based card company. There is an online arm of the business too, operated by one of his sons, selling gifts which include Penguin and Tintin merchandise, James Alexander-branded diffusers and scented candles, posters and framed prints. And the name of the shop? James and Alexander happen to be the middle names of

his two sons, a nod towards the fact that this is indeed a family-run business, one which deserves to succeed , having been brave enough to start up in such troubled times as these.

The Little Soft Play Company For Those Magical Early Years

T

he role of play in a young child’s early years is enormous – the exploring, the learning and having fun are crucial for their physical and social development. Local mother of two, Sam CrosbyStockwell was well aware of this when bringing up Zachary and Paige, and was finding soft play hire in the local area, which encompasses all of these things, problematic. Last year, Sam decided not to return to the corporate world after maternity leave, feeling a huge desire to remain at home just that little bit longer to enjoy those magical ‘early-learning-years’. That was when this ‘stay-at-home’ mum created The Little Soft Play Company, serving Bourne, the Deepings, Stamford and surrounding areas. Sam explains her mission: “Every child has their own unique personality; they develop at different stages, prefer to play and learn in different ways and cope with social situations differently too. Recognising this, I have designed my

play areas to embrace children’s uniqueness and provide them with the tools to play in a way that they most enjoy. “My packages are made up of everything I wished was there when I was searching for soft play hire - something suitable for babies and toddlers (up to the age of four) - delicate colour schemes, beautiful materials, iconic traditional toys and sensory resources to motivate children to explore different textures, shapes and mechanisms. From crawlers to walkers, from sitters to roamers, each of my packages has something for every little one to explore.” “Little Soft Play packages are safe for hire at home or at venues, and have the highest hygiene and sanitisation standards before, during and after the hire” Please refer to Sam’s Instagram/Facebook pages for further information regarding packages or call Sam directly on 07944 767194.

Putting the ‘Human’ Back into ‘Human Resources’ A Bourne senior HR and business adviser has realised her ambition of launching her own HR consultancy after being made redundant due to the coronavirus crisis.

K

irsten Sunter saw the redundancy as a key opportunity to strike out on her own, and so she has created Odin HR Ltd, aimed primarily at advising small businesses without in-house HR resources on their employee matters. Odin HR offers advice and support by phone, e-mail, virtually or at your business premises.

With over twenty years’ multi-sector experience, including manufacturing and logistics, in global companies and a Masters-level qualification in Employment Law, Kirsten is a ‘safe pair of hands’. Kirsten says, “What makes me a little different as a person and a business is that, against a very workingclass background, through a series of circumstances, I had quite a privileged secondary education that would not normally have been available to a child of my parents’ means. Being away at boarding school from the age of ten was tough at first, but it opened up educational opportunities to me.” “During my university holidays, I worked full-time as a factory operative at what was George Adams, in Spalding. This was also a very important part of my development, experiencing first-hand how hard people work behind the scenes to produce the food we eat, and I built many new relationships. The combination of my home, school and early work experiences have shaped me as a down-to-earth, warm and ‘real’ person, who can relate well to all different types of people. I bring that approachability and interest in people into my business.”

22

Bourne

Odin HR offers guidance on employment law and people questions; disciplinary and grievance issues; sensitive ill-health and performance meetings; and ‘restructure or redundancy’ processes. The business puts together HR policies and employment documentation and delivers training on people management and basic employment law for line managers. For employers wanting to get the basics right to protect their businesses, Odin HR also provides an ‘HR Check-up’ service. Within just a short space of time, Odin HR is growing its portfolio of satisfied customers. Simply SIPs, Bourne’s specialist manufacturer of structural insulated panels for garden studios, says, “We needed employee contracts creating and we didn’t know where to start. We were on a very tight deadline. Kirsten worked her magic and responded professionally all the way through; she has a very friendly and approachable manner, guiding us every step of the way. She worked with speed and accuracy, keeping us informed at every stage. We are delighted to say Kirsten produced everything we required by our deadline. We highly recommend her services if you are a small or medium business looking for HR support.” Kirsten is proud to support “Don’t Lose Hope”, the Bourne counselling services charity, as their voluntary HR consultant. She is passionate about raising awareness of mental health issues and giving local people affordable access to the help they need. Last October, she raised over £600 for the charity when she carried out a tandem skydive at Sibson Airfield. OCT OBE R 2 0 2 0

Recipe

Ingredients Serves 6

750g pumpkin, peeled, seeded and cubed 2 carrots, coarsely chopped 2 onions, cut into wedges 2 1/2 tbsp vegetable oil 1 large potato, sliced 1 litre water 2 or 3 cubes chicken stock, crumbled 250ml double cream 1 1/4 tbsp ground nutmeg, or to taste 1 tsp ground black pepper Salt to taste You can find this recipe and others at www.allrecipes.co.uk

Method

PUMPKIN SOUP

1 Preheat the oven to 220ºC/Gas Mark 7. 2 Place the pumpkin, carrots and onions in a baking dish or roasting tin. Drizzle with the vegetable oil. 3 Bake in the preheated oven for forty minutes, until soft but not blackened. 4 In a large saucepan over a medium heat, bring the water and crumbled stock cubes to the boil. Cook the potato in simmering water until soft, for about twenty minutes. 5 Combine the potato and water with the roasted vegetables and puree in a liquidiser or food processor until smooth. Return to the pan over low heat and stir in the cream, nutmeg, pepper and salt. Heat gently, then serve with some crusty bread. Helpful tip: Sugar pumpkins are similar to the large orange pumpkins you find during Hallowe’en but they are smaller, sweeter and have more flavour – optimal for this or any other pumpkin recipe. If unavailable, you can substitute in butternut or kabocha squash.

NFU Mutual in Bourne Supports Don’t Lose Hope to Help Local Relief Efforts

N

FU Mutual Agents and their staff at the local Bourne, Boston and Sleaford agency are delighted to have nominated local charity, Don’t Lose Hope, to receive a donation of more than £3,000 from a national £1m ‘Agency Giving Fund’, launched by NFU Mutual’s Head Office. In light of the national emergency this country is facing, NFU Mutual, the UK’s leading rural insurer, has allocated £1m to help local frontline charities at this difficult time.  During Lockdown, Don’t Lose Hope converted their mini-bus into a ‘not for profit’ mobile shop. They visited over 120 households in Bourne and surrounding villages each week, delivering essential food and household supplies and a few treats. The service enabled them to identify those who needed a little extra support, who then received a phone call each week from their counselling support team. Run alongside their helpline, this service allowed people a call to hear a friendly voice in times when they most needed it. Alternate weeks saw the charity’s mascot, Eddy, out delivering cakes and treats to people who were alone on their birthdays or needed cheering up. Many families contacted Don’t Lose Hope about the service, which delivered over fifty cakes and surprise visits during the fourteen-week period. Alister Green, Agent at NFU Mutual, said: “Don’t’ Lose Hope is making a wonderful difference to our community in these challenging times, and we are proud to have been able to nominate this local

26

Bourne

charity to benefit from NFU Mutual’s national fund.” Nicola Brister, founder of Don’t Lose Hope and Young Persons’ Counsellor, said: “We’re extremely thankful to NFU Mutual Bourne, Boston and Sleaford agency for nominating our charity. The money will go a long way to helping us as we are head back to our ‘normal’ day job. The Don’t Lose Hope café re-opened on July 20th, and we have also secured the lease on 3 South Street, which will soon be home to our new therapeutic arts studio and gift shop. The studio, along with art therapy, will be a venue for many of our groups such as knit and natter, ceramics and many more creative workshops. “Construction of the ‘Man Shed’ is now also in full swing. This will be used to provide a space for the community to share and learn new skills, repair and fix broken or damaged items, and build and create items to take away or sell in the gift shop. We will be running workshops, repair shops and educational events to encourage cross generational sharing and learning. “In the community garden space, we will have a potting shed, as well as a mud kitchen area for the youngsters to get creative in the outdoors, and a ‘bushcraft’ area with a fire pit for even more workshop options. We are very excited to see these projects progress.” For further information on Don’t Lose Hope, visit: www.dontlosehope.co.uk or the charity’s Facebook page. BREAKING NEWS It is with much regret that the Bourne Events Team have made to make the decision to cancel this year’s Christmas Fayre and Lights Switch-on which was scheduled to have taken place on November 28th. The need to maintain the strictest level of social distancing during the present Covid-19 crisis has made this unfortunate decision almost inevitable.

FORMER BARCLAYS BANK TO BECOME EXTENDED HOME FOR

O

ne of the more conspicuous of many empty properties, in and around the centre of Bourne at the moment, has been the former Barclays Bank premises on North Street, closed since June 2018. That situation is about to change, however, as SureMove, now one of the area’s leading firms of property lawyers, is expanding their operation from their offices, presently located on the first floor of this building, to integrate the whole of the ground floor section too.

My recent conversation with SureMove’s founder and director, Kelly Fleming, revealed how the present COVID-19 crisis may have actually spurred this ambitious firm into making such a bold move, to increase their workspace to this extent. Even before the March 23rd announcement, “Stay at Home”, hit the nation’s ears, SureMove were finding their suite of small offices, formerly occupied by the long-established solicitors’ practice, Andrews, Stanton and Ringrose, rather cramped; all at a time which was seeing SureMove’s business blossom, with their reputation for efficiency, friendliness and good value growing at a pace. The lockdown was soon to witness many firms simply close down, at least in the short term, but SureMove saw this potential threat as more of an opportunity

30

Bourne

to progress. Computers and printers were provided for all their staff and the concept of “working from home” became firmly established. Many of the fivestar customer reviews over the last five months speak highly of this ability to provide a wonderful service … despite not being in the office. Kelly explains how the lockdown has revolutionised the ways in which the business has had to adapt to the enforced changes, particularly regarding the various technological advances; “We’ve moved on five years in less than six months”, she suggests! However, it cannot be denied that there are still valuable benefits of maintaining the traditional face-to-face meetings with the client and the camaraderie of the SureMove teams working in close proximity. To that end, therefore, the larger spaces which are in the process of being created by the large-scale refurbishment of the Barclays section of the premises, will enable socially-distanced meetings with clients and colleagues, (along with SureMove’s impressive “inhouse” training of its staff) to occur and for the business to flourish. All of the SureMove staff will have sufficient working space by the beginning of October to return, and hopefully continue to provide the service which has prompted so many satisfied clients to post such warm recommendations in their five-star reviews on the Trustpilot site.

THINKING OF SELLING

YOUR HOUSE?

All clients instructing SureMove to act in their sale, will receive a SureMove Property Log at no extra charge. SureMove will ensure the property is legally sale-ready by producing a Property Log Book, which will include copies of the deeds, plan, all your guarantees, planning permissions etc, together with a report on the property for potential buyers. The important point to make is that SureMove will legally check and validate the paperwork, highlighting any potential issues and locating any missing documents, making sure all is in order, ready for when you secure a buyer.

Your Garden

October Gardening Tips

L

et’s hope October brings us some fine weather to start clearing the garden or allotment and preparing it for the colder months ahead. In fact, most of the work this month involves clearing the plot, plenty of digging, and composting debris. Rough dig over heavy ground and leave it to be broken down by the frosts. Keep off the soil if it is wet and do not be tempted to dig if it is frozen. Remember... clocks back on October 25th! Harvest or protect any remaining crops that are susceptible to frosts and clear away any remaining debris and place on the compost heap: the larger the quantity, the better as this helps the heap to warm up and accelerates the rotting process. It is advisable to shred or pulverize thick, woody stems such as sweetcorn, beans, and brassicas so that they decompose more quickly. Do not put any diseased foliage on the compost heap; burn or discard it. Lift main crop potatoes before the end of the month and then store in a cool, dark place: I went to the chip shop and asked them for their used paper potato sacks. October is perfect for dividing large oversized crowns of rhubarb. If established plants are left indefinitely, they do eventually produce less each year. Cut up and divide the crowns into good sized pieces, making sure each has signs of dormant buds and, as it is not a fussy plant, it can be planted almost anywhere, so long as the ground does not get waterlogged. It is also the perfect time for moving or planting new fruit bushes and trees.

D I S C O V E R I N G

Bourne March

Bare-rooted trees will benefit from the warmth still left in the soil. Crops that can be sown this month are: • Early broad beans. • Japanese over-wintering onion sets. Although large onion sets look stronger, small or medium ones are less likely to bolt in the spring. • Last chance to transplant spring cabbages – be sure to net them to prevent pigeons eating the young leaves. • Plant garlic. • Broad beans – early varieties should overwinter. Other jobs for this month include: • Continue to earth up celery and leeks. • Protect cauliflowers by bending a leaf over the curd. • Finish pruning blackberries and raspberries. • Keep removing yellow leaves from brassicas – leaving them on the ground risks spreading grey mould. • If you have not already done so, earth up or stake (or both) Brussels sprouts and sprouting broccoli plants. • Pick the unripe tomatoes and put a few in a bag with a ripe banana – this gives off ethylene gas which speeds ripening. • Cure pumpkins and squashes – cut and leave them to dry out in the sun; it hardens the skins and they will keep for longer. • Cut back asparagus and artichoke foliage and compost. • Remove runner bean canes; if left in the ground they will easily rot. Happy gardening!

Have VIEW Seen our Virtual Viewings?

2020

has seen changes for many people in the way they work, with more and more people working from home. Whilst this may not be beneficial for the property industry, we have still seen changes and had to adapt to a “new normal. Here at Newton Fallowell, the safety of our clients and team has been of utmost importance, especially as the local property market continues to get busier and busier. Every property viewing that takes place involves us meeting with different clients, putting both us and them at risk. Given viewings are essential for selling and letting property, we have ensured PPE is worn by clients and our team, upon each appointment. However, we are also ensuring that each viewer has been provided with as much detail as possible about any home of interest to them, prior to arranging a viewing. In normal circumstances, we would ensure that a potential viewer has seen the photos, floor plan and description about the home, as well as discussing why they feel the property could be suitable for them. Now, we can go above and beyond this level of detail, with a walk-through of each home available to see.

BY JASON TREADWELL, MANAGING DIRECTOR

experience is as good as possible. The virtual viewings are easily accessible on the online portals and can also be sent directly to potential clients. The aim of the virtual viewings is not to replace the viewing itself; it is merely to ensure that potential buyers or tenants have as much detail about a home as possible, prior to visiting and putting themselves, our clients or our team at risk. Potential buyers and tenants have commented that they assist with their property search, enabling them to identify properties that may or may not be suitable quicker, limiting their need to visit as many homes. Our sellers and landlords have also been pleased; whilst the quantity of viewing appointments is less, the quality and conversion rate to offer has vastly increased. If you have not seen any examples of our virtual viewings yet, please scan the QR codes below using the camera on your smartphone. If you are considering selling or letting your home and would be interested in gaining a virtual viewing for your property, then please do not hesitate to contact our team on 01778 422567.

Our virtual viewings have been proving extremely popular with buyers, sellers, landlords and tenants. The smooth walk-through of the property is accompanied with a narration by a member of our team, providing detail about the home, as well as a musical background, to ensure the viewing

Part Two

ast month we started delving into a fascinating pocket guide, issued “by authority of the Bourne Urban District Council” and available in the 1960s for one shilling, (five pence in pre-decimal terms). That same guide will this month provide information on what life was like for the 5,370 residents of this small market town.

On the subject of public amenities, we are assured that, “Although rightly proud of its history, the Bourne of today is not content to live in the past”. Our air was “dry and bracing” and, in quality and quantity, the water supply was second to none. “The newly constituted South Lincolnshire Water Board… draws its supply and has the main pumping station in Bourne. It is estimated that there are about 130 true artesian bores within the Urban District, supplying farms, factories, housing etc”, the guide goes on to explain. It then refers to a “large electricity grid transformer station being situated in Manor Lane” and gas “no longer made here but brought in piped mains”. Many of us can still recall the gasometer in Victoria Place, shortly after having passed Bourne County Primary School and gone under the railway bridge next to the school on Abbey Road. On the subject of housing, we read that, “Many and varied are the housing styles”, and of the 1,750 domestic properties, 546 are owned by the Council. Much private development was said to be in progress, suggesting that it was becoming an attractive location for

many, and the rapid expansion of Peterborough about to occur around this time was soon to lead to a long and steady growth in housing stock, continuing right up to the present day. The guide now considers public health, referring to the Butterfield Cottage Hospital on the corner of North Road and Meadowgate as “a general hospital of no mean repute”, (talking of which, how many of us old Brunnians could ever forget the threatening presence of dear Sister Bristow? – Ed.) The town and surrounding villages were also served by the Bourne Chest Hospital on South Road, also known as the “Isolation Hospital” due to its use as a centre for Tuberculosis patients. The last twenty years have seen this site now occupied by houses on roads echoing names of former medical practitioners of the town; Holloway, Tipler, Finn, Gilpin, Windle and Tully. Sisters Windle and Tully were the two ‘Queens District Nurses’ mentioned in the guide who “resided in and gave yeoman service to the town”. Years before the arrival of today’s medical centres on North Road, Exeter Street and St Gilbert’s Road, the residents of Bourne would have to make do with the services provided by the county at the old National School in North Street, (now the Conservative Party offices). Here, we are informed, was a weekly clinic and consultant service with special emphasis on children. To complete this rather meagre offering, there would be “welfare facilities and home helps readily available”!

YOUR GUIDE TO

Bourne Market EVERY THURSDAY AND SATURDAY

T

08:30 - 14:30

here is evidence of Bourne having held a market for its residents since 1279 A.D. No longer on the actual streets these days, but on a site beside the Corn Exchange in the centre of town, the regular Thursday and Saturday Markets continue this long-standing tradition. This month, we turn a spotlight on the regular stall-holders, several of whom travel many miles each week to be with us, and most of whom explain how the friendliness of the good-natured Bourne folk keep them coming back for more!

An absolutely beautiful display greets the customers, with all manner of bread products and cakes offered by this Langar (Nottinghamshire)based bakery. The “Date and Walnut sourdough” loaf alongside a “Stilton sourdough” boule, using Long Clawson Stilton cheese, looked particularly tempting. There’s a “red onion, sea salt and garlic fougasse” sitting amongst ciabatta and focaccia loaves, baguettes, croissants and quiches, all bringing the sights and smells of the continent to our very own Bourne Market.

GARDEN LIGHTING

A

s we head into October, the nights seem to be drawing in faster and faster, and you certainly wouldn’t be alone if you were considering putting lighting in your garden. I think it’s actually our most popular enquiry. Most people who I visit are not aware of just how many ways there are to control your lighting. Often, when I first visit, our clients have just realised that they want a light - perhaps a PIR (movement sensor) floor light, or sometimes a wall light that can be turned off in the house. What people are often delighted to hear is that PIR (which stands for ‘passive infra-red’) sensors can actually be fitted independently of any fitting; furthermore, they can actually control more than one light and, what’s even better, they can actually work with other sensors on the same circuit … all very clever! Another option, which is actually a favourite of mine, is a photocell (day/night sensor); this can be

put independently on any lighting circuit, so that all the lights that are controlled by it will come on when it gets dark, and then go off when it is light again. This can also work hand-in-hand with a timer if you didn’t want the light on all through the night. If having stand-alone accessories on your house just doesn’t appeal to you, the option we use in some of the heritage buildings we work on is a special type of timer. It is an intelligent timer that knows how long each day is, once you have set it to the right date. The added bonus of this is that you can set it to go off whenever you like. So you can set it in the following sequence :- Darkness: ON - 11pm: OFF 5am: ON - Daylight: OFF. And the best bit is that you can put it in a cupboard or loft and forget about it! Garden lighting is a real passion of mine, especially when I’m allowed to get really creative. If you would like to discuss your garden lighting ideas, please call 01778 772595 to book yourself in for a free consultation and I would be happy to discuss ideas with you.

Hill & Clark Bourne are booming following recent membership of The Guild of Property Professionals As part of their new Guild Membership, Hill & Clark has access to innovative marketing to promote their sellers’ properties to the highest standard. They also have access to the widest possible pool of buyers – not just in Bourne but across the whole of the UK including the lucrative London market, where its properties are marketed through The Guild’s head office in Park Lane. “Being chosen to represent The Guild in Bourne is a great honour,” says Lewis Thorogood, Senior Sales Manager.

Recovery Continues for Sales ● The housing market recovery continues. 70,710 transactions completed in July, 14.5% up on June. Numbers are still down on last year but the surge in new ‘sales agreed’ will boost completions over the next few months. ● 8,930 more sales completed in July than in June. Although transactions are increasing, they remain below the yearly average, -27.4% below July 2019 and -28.2% below July 2018. ● In July, Rightmove reported the highest number of ‘sales agreed’ in any month since they started tracking the data, over 10 years ago. HMRC transaction figures will not show these sales until they complete.

Which Properties Have Sold Recently in Bourne? Bourne Hill & Clark, with a friendly team and newly innovated viewings and valuation procedures following COVID, have seen properties selling STC with great results for both buyers and sellers. Take a look at the properties pictures above: Mill Drove, a spacious modern home (left) and Dorchester Avenue (right) a four-bedroom detached home, which sold at 100% of the asking price. It’s time to get moving! Call us today for your free appraisal!

● We expect to see an increase in sales completed in August and September, reflecting increased demand from the stamp duty holiday. Source: Dataloft, HMRC

Secure Storage Solutions at a sensible cost Recently established on Pinfold Road, off Spalding Road in Bourne, this storage facility provides one hundred shipping containers which offer secure, flexible, low-cost domestic and commercial storage solutions.

T

he company, operated by Rob Mills, forms part of a familyrun self-storage facility, with a sister site, Rutland Self Store, located in Empingham.

The Containers: The Bourne site, formerly known as the ‘General Storage Company’, has been fully refurbished with all the containers glistening, as new in their bright blue livery. The containers are watertight, well ventilated and have a thermal ceiling coating to capture moisture. They are all located on ground floor level, providing easy drive up access to visitors for loading and unloading. Removal lorries can easily access the facilities. Whether you are storing furniture, moving house, temporarily holding goods or running a business, Bourne Self Store’s 20ft x 8ft and 10ft x 8ft storage units can provide the right storage solution, either for the short- or the long-term, and are accessible twenty-four hours a day, every day of the year. Security: Whatever storage solution you pick, you can rest assured that your things are kept safe. The storage units can be accessed through a secure automated gate with floodlit security fencing ; they come with personalised security keys with lock box protection and are protected by twenty-four-hour CCTV.

Cost: The large unit is 20ft x 8ft x 8ft (which equates to 160 square feet of storage, a similar size to a single garage) and will easily fit the contents of an average three-bedroom house.

This will cost £90 per month plus VAT. The small unit is 10ft x 8ft x 8ft (equating to 80 square feet of storage and the size of half a single garage) into which you could easily fit the contents of an average one-bed house or flat. This will cost £70 per month plus VAT. For both large and small containers, longterm discounts would be available.

Client Testimonials “The facility is brilliant! The staff are friendly and helpful, and the site is clean and tidy and well maintained.” – (G.A.) “You’re doing great. The only site I could find that was 24/7 access that also had CCTV, lights, and a high security electric gate.” – (J.S.)

his Pinchbeck-based firm are establishing an enviable reputation for quality and value, confirmed by a host of very favourable recommendations from satisfied customers on their website, Info@eco-drives.co.uk.

Resin driveways are a long-lasting and easy-tomaintain option to transform the front of your home. An eco-friendly alternative, thanks to the non-toxic materials used, and available in a range of colours, a resin driveway is naturally draining, meaning no more puddles from heavy rainfall. They are highly resistant to rust, oil, corrosion, salt and cracking, and are also the safest option, being resistant to abrasion, slipping, indentation and ignition. The block paving driveways provided by EcoDrives are becoming an increasingly popular choice, due to the versatile design opportunities. Block paving is available in a wide range of styles and patterns, meaning they can be used to create a truly unique design, fitting your individual needs and taste. This type of surface is very durable and can withstand heavy use and harsh weather conditions, while only requiring occasional cleaning to keep it looking its best. It prevents surface water build-up due to the porous nature of the materials used, allowing for a more eco-friendly block paving service. Whether you are looking for something subtle or eye-catching, Eco-Drives Ltd are confident you will find a driveway that fits your requirements and complements your home. Their prices are very competitive and their service is friendly, professional and high quality. INTEREST RATES...

Not what they used to be

A

s I approach my thirtieth birthday this September, I have decided to reflect on the past thirty years, and I think it is fair to say the world is a very different place from what it was in 1990!

BY MATTHEW BIGGS – FINANCIAL PLANNER

‘balanced’ risk portfolio. The green line (B) is a fixed interest rate of 1.5% (the average of the past ten years) and the red line (C) is the Retail Performance Index (RPI), a measure of UK inflation:

The early ’90s was an incredible time for many reasons - some great music, the end of the Cold War, and the emergence of a new generation of tech companies that we all now wish we had purchased some shares in! Interest rates were on the up and, by the end of 1990, the Bank of England base interest rate was nearly 15% - completely unthinkable today! This was great for savers but clearly not so good for those who had a mortgage during those days and, as a borrower, things were pretty painful! In the current climate of low interest rates, we see the reverse of those days in the early ’90s cycle - great for borrowers but, for savers, almost impossible to find sensible levels of return at the bank or building society. So, where is the alternative in these days of fear and uncertainty? How are you going to generate sensible returns to see you through your retirement years, children’s schooling or that holiday of a lifetime? One option you may wish to consider is to invest some of your capital. In the example below, you can see what would have happened if you had invested £10,000 between January 1st 2010 and July 1st 2020. The blue line (A) has been invested in the average

By the start of July 2020, the blue line (A) in now valued at £18,566.02, the green line (B) is valued at £11,691.50 and the red line (C) is valued at £13,426.61. This shows that if you had chosen to save in a vehicle that offered a fixed interest rate of 1.5% over the past ten years, your money would have actually fallen in real term value of £1,784.66, whereas it would have gained £6,054.74 in real term value were it invested over the same ten year period (basically, if your money is below the red line (C) you’re losing money, not making money!). So, perhaps now is time to consider your own planning. With our help, you will be able to understand if making an investment is right for you. If you would like to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of investing your money over the medium to long term, then please contact our office to arrange a FREE initial consultation with one of our highly experienced and friendly financial planners.

Past performance can in no way be seen as a guide to likely future performance; investment values can fall as well as rise; when investing, capital will be placed at risk.

Consumer Advice

Stop The Spam And Put An End To Unwanted Text Messages by Eileen Le Voi at Safe Local Trades Whether it’s ‘your bank’ asking for verification of personal details or a message to say you have won a competition prize – unwanted texts can be annoying and sometimes worrying. However, there is now a new service which allows you to report spam texts directly to your mobile phone provider. All operators now use 7726 as the short code to report spam texts, and it is free to use. All of the UK’s mobile operators worked together to deploy a tool which collates all the information from the 7726 short code in real time. This means they can take early action to block numbers that are generating spam on their networks. They can also use this information to inform the regulators.

Planning permission, change of use, conversion and extensions, new build, works to listed buildings, building control approval, building and land appraisals.

You can report spam texts directly to your mobile phone provider free of charge by forwarding the text message to 7726.

While scammers are getting more cunning at making a scam message look like the real thing, there are some signs you can watch out for. Here are some great tips from Which? Unexpected contact: Think about how that organisation normally contacts you and if it isn't via a message, contact them directly to check if it's legitimate. A genuine organisation will never contact you out of the blue and ask you to verify your details, request personal or banking details or tell you to transfer money via a message.

Check for spelling or grammar errors: Genuine organisations will rarely, if ever, make glaring spelling mistakes or grammatical errors, and if so, it will usually be an isolated incident. If the message doesn't look professional, it's probably a scam – even if it drops into a message chain from your bank. Don't follow any links: If you follow a link in the message, it could send you to an imposter website set up to steal your money or personal data. In some cases, it could even infect your smartphone with malware. Always look up an organisation's contact details independently and get in touch to verify the message. Don't share personal information: If you think you've been targeted by a scam message, don't share any personal information, your banking details or PIN. Legitimate organisations, such as banks or HMRC, will never ask for your personal or banking details through a message or text. OCTOBE OBERR 22002200 OCT

Food Allergies and Trials

O

ctober … and Hallowe’en around the corner. Pumpkins (and other squashes) are not just for carving though; they can be useful in the veterinary world. It is possible that some of the ones grown round here will end up in pet food, but why? Dogs and cats are not renowned for eating them.

Skin allergies are extremely common in pets and can be due to a variety of causes. Insect bites, mainly from fleas, are our most common allergy, whilst seasonal allergies from tree and grass pollen can be rife at times. Food allergies are thought to be more common than realised but testing for them is hard. It requires a lot of discipline not just by owners, but everyone involved in the care of your pet. Animals eat a variety of commercial foods that contain proteins and flavourings that the body may come to recognise as foreign and which the immune system attacks. The resulting inflammation can occur in the digestive tract, but more commonly affects the skin. Animals itch around the face, especially the ears, but also the feet and over the rump. In fact, inflammation and damage of the ear canals is most commonly due to allergies and may be the only symptom of allergy in your pet. Most owners think

60

Bourne

Wise Words By Deirdre Wilson

that it is a new food that causes allergies. However, your pet may have been on the same diet for a long time with no trouble at all. It takes time for allergies to develop then, all of a sudden, the immune system rejects the food and an allergy develops. So how do we know if your pet is allergic to a particular foodstuff? There are no reliable blood or skin tests; instead, we do a food trial that is quite demanding for pets and owners to follow. Prescription diets are best used for food allergy testing. They contain novel proteins such as venison, or hydrolysed proteins where the allergens have been stripped off. The carbohydrate sources are also unique, for instance our lovely pumpkins or sweet potato. This food is the only thing that should pass your pet’s lips – no treats, no milk, no chews, no leftovers. They need to be on this diet for eight to twelve weeks for it to be effective. All family members need to be onboard with this or it will fail, and all the effort wasted. Once symptoms resolve, your pet is gradually introduced to its original food sources to see if the itch starts up again and, if it does, the answer is obvious – your pet has a food allergy. So, pumpkins are not only great for carving, they’re great for pets as well!

A unique performance of her one-woman show, filmed in the theatre at Stamford Arts Centre and presented especially for an online audience on National Poetry Day. Georgie Jones, (27) from Bourne, has finally cracked what it means to be a woman. Just kidding. She’s haphazardly stumbling through adulthood trying to figure it out. Laced with warmth and hilarity, “ISH” is part party, part epic poem. Spoken word, stand up and storytelling are set to a soundtrack of nostalgic ’90s bangers in celebration of the simultaneously grotesque and glorious experience that is womanhood. Oct 7th at 6pm and 11th at 12 midnight: “In Loco Parentis” – Vincent Dance Company: Stamford Arts Centre Website. Critically acclaimed performance where three adult and 64

Mayor

Words from the Mayor COUNCILLOR COLIN PATTISON The main crux of this month’s article is to announce my first fundraising event for my three chosen local charities, namely The Butterfield Day Care Centre, Wake House Community Centre and The Old Town Hall Trust. The event will be “The Mayor’s Remembrance Day Sponsored Parish Walk” In these difficult times with ongoing restrictions currently in place, we are simply not allowed to gather for normal fundraising type events, so I have had the bright idea to get out and about on what will be this year’s National Day of Remembrance on Sunday November 8th. The general plan for this sponsored walk is to set off from The Memorial Gardens Cenotaph, after laying a wreath on behalf of the town, then to proceed to the Elsea Park Community Centre, out to the hamlet of Twenty, back to Dyke village, over the A15 road and into the hamlet of Cawthorpe, laying a wreath at these four points en-route. After heading back out of Cawthorpe, we turn for home and head into Bourne down North Road, calling in at The Butterfield Day Care Centre, Wake House and, hopefully still in one piece, to complete the walk at the steps on the front of The Old Town Hall in Bourne Market Place.

Mayor Opens New Photography Studio in Bourne Bourne Town Mayor, Councillor Colin Pattison, was on official duty at the end of August as he opened Bourne’s newest enterprise. Faye Porter the owner of ‘Fayetography Studios’ was congratulated by Cllr Pattison for bucking the trend and starting up on the high street in these uncertain times. Faye’s first camera was purchased for her by her nans and they even provided her with a business start-up loan. Sadly, one of Faye’s nans passed away recently but Cllr Pattison reassured Faye that she would have been extremely proud of Faye’s achievements. Faye’s studio is dedicated to babies under one and has many props, some self-made, to assist with her photography. After many years working from home, Faye has now moved to premises on North Street in Bourne. Bookings for Christmas sittings have taken off and Faye has already had to include extra dates. If you want to contact Faye or see some of her work, just checkout: www.fayetographystudios.co.uk fayetography@hotmail.com. Fayetography studios

Quite unique, different and, frankly, mad, but I (we, as my long-suffering wife Fiona has “agreed” to join me!) feel that something needs to be done for our community and parish. Please dear friends, I ask you to support us in whatever way you can via pledges/donations; this is for our community and parish, remember. We hope family, friends, small businesses and larger companies alike will support and get behind this project. I’m sure we will all know somebody involved with, using, or relying upon, my nominated charities in some sort of way. We have already secured the on-the-day support of our local Lincs 4 x 4 Response Team. Thanks already go out to Struan Cornell and volunteers. More details on sponsorship/pledges/ help can be obtained from Ian Sismey, the Town Council Clerk on 01778 426123. Thank you, stay safe.
