Introduction

Welcome to your December Issue A very warm welcome to this, our last issue of 2020, and let’s hope that very soon we’ll be seeing much more light at the end of what has been the darkest of dark tunnels this year, with so much disruption and despair all around. Let me express my sincere thanks to all the team here at Discovering Magazines for all their magnificent efforts to produce our magazines this year. It’s not been easy at times, so huge thanks go to everyone who has helped us in any way, especially our advertisers and contributors, with their regular features, wonderful advice and suggestions. Best wishes to you all for Christmas and for 2021 – good luck, but most importantly, good health!

Claire x

At the time of writing, the pandemic continues its remorseless advance. There are promising signs of a vaccine available but universal access to it is some way off right now. The sad conundrum which the nation is now having to face is whether or not our much-anticipated Christmas gatherings of families and friends should be risked at all, whilst the danger remains. Five days of people from separate households being allowed to be together could well result in an even more stringent lockdown, come the new year. Whatever the advice of the scientists and the decisions made by the government, there are bound to be many individuals who will be either unable or unwilling to ‘toe the line’ and so put the health of others in jeopardy. One of the many enduring memories of the last nine months for me has been this reinforcing of the old adage, “There’s nowt so queer as folk!” Let us hope that Christmas can come and go without too great a price having to be paid and then for brighter and healthier days to lie ahead in 2021. Enjoy your final issue of 2020!

John

Recipe

-EggnogThis deliciously creamy eggnog recipe is a little taste of Christmas history. George Washington, the first American president, even made his own... so why not give it a try?!

Method Ingredients Serves 12

6 medium free-range eggs, separated 150g golden caster sugar 500ml whole milk 400ml double cream 350ml rum, bourbon or a mixture of the two, depending on your preference Freshly grated nutmeg, to taste Cinnamon sticks to decorate Recipe from www.bbc.co.uk/food

• Whisk the egg yolks in a bowl with 100g/3½ oz of the caster sugar until the mixture is pale yellow and thick (this is best done with an electric handheld mixer). • Stir in the milk, double cream, and the rum and/or bourbon. You can add a little grated nutmeg as well, if you like your nog this way. • Pour the mixture into two 750ml/1½ pint bottles with stoppers and store in the fridge for up to two weeks. (The alcohol will prevent the eggs or cream spoiling.) • Place the egg whites in a box and freeze until ready to serve the eggnog. • When ready to serve, defrost the egg whites into a clean metal or glass bowl. Using a handheld electric mixer, whisk the egg whites until foamy and opaque. Add the remaining 50g of sugar and whisk the egg whites until soft peaks form when the whisk is removed. • Pour the eggnog from the bottles into a large bowl and fold in the egg whites until well combined. Ladle the eggnog into glass tumblers and serve with a little freshly grated nutmeg over the top of each glass.

The Gin’s The Thing:

Lincolnshire Bred!

T

he county of Lincolnshire has the North Sea coastline to the east and boasts some of the most popular seaside resorts in the UK.

The county town is the city of Lincoln, which holds much interest, historical and otherwise, as do numerous other parts of this county. Lincolnshire is also recognised as a prime agricultural area, growing many grains, fruits, vegetables and flowers. Cattle, sheep and other animals are also a big part of Lincolnshire’s success, as well as events and sports, plus a great number of places and venues of interest. Lincolnshire, however, is also gaining an enviable reputation for some of its alcoholic produce. The Lincoln Distillery Ltd (established in 2017) is very proud to be the producer of Lincoln Gin. The gin is made in very small batches, using two thirty-litre copper stills, which results in excellent quality and flavour for the smooth, finished product. Lincoln Gin has a most impressive bouquet and a wonderful mouthfeel of citrus, which extends through to the palate and the exceptional finish, utilising botanicals of juniper, coriander seed, angelica root, liquorice root, lime, beetroot, lemon, grapefruit, elderflower and orange to great advantage. Fabulous on its own, for a tonic mix and splendid in cocktails, too. Tel: 0772 0886 936 Email:hello@thelincolndistillery.co.uk www.thelincolndistillery.co.uk

A Little Luxury Distillery was established during 2011. Today, this award-winning Sleaford company is known for producing small batch, handcrafted, highquality, distinctive Lincolnshire spirits. Their gins, gin liqueurs and rums have superb flavours and regular ‘devotees’. ‘Angels High Gin’ (created as a tribute to the bomber personnel of Lincolnshire) – think grapefruit and lemongrass – and ‘Pure Luxury Gin’ – think citrus – are two of this company’s gins that are very popular, indeed. Great with mixer/ tonic, too… watch ‘Angels High Gin’ change colour when tonic water is added! Coffee rum is a further impressive production. It is richly-flavoured, smooth and fabulous on its own and I like it in, or to accompany, a good latte, with vanilla.

Bourne Westfield Strumming to Success

B

ourne Westfield Primary Academy have always been proud of their music tradition. They employ a full-time music specialist who teaches all of the children’s curricular music lessons from EYFS to Year 6, and who also runs a broad range of extra-curricular clubs and ensembles to ensure that every child has an opportunity to become the very best musician that they can be; to ensure that every child has an opportunity to learn to play an instrument and read music.

The Friends of Westfield generously sponsor a recorder for every child from Year 3. The year 2020 has brought its challenges in the teaching of music, but Bourne Westfield have been determined that they will rise to the challenge and, with the generous financial 16

support of the Friends of Westfield, the answer has come in the form of the ukulele. The school were delighted to take delivery of thirty instruments from a local company, “Scarletmedia” (www.scarletmedia.co.uk) and the children cannot wait to start learning some festive tunes. Miss Beavis, Arts Director at Bourne Westfield, said, “I am absolutely thrilled that we can give our children this opportunity. The children are so excited, and it is a great opportunity for us to try something different. The ukulele is a very versatile instrument and played by so many modern musical artists, so I have no doubt it is going to prove very popular.”

Bourne Salon Now Under New Ownership

t a time when hairdressing and beauty salons in particular are suffering at the hands of the current Covid-19 pandemic, it was most encouraging recently to listen to Maxey Hair’s new owner, Laura Pracowity, outlining to me her plans and hopes for the future, fearing that a second lockdown was imminent and yet another month would pass before normal service could be resumed. The salon was established five years ago by Sandra Upton as one of the earliest arrivals in the new parade of shop units on Wherry’s Lane, just off Bourne’s North Street. It is a bright, spacious and modern salon which Laura now shares with Ela Gajewska, trading as ‘Eli Barber Shop’, and Sabrina, whose nail bar operates under the name, ‘Nails by Bean’.

20

Bourne

Laura had already spent two years as a stylist with Sandra at Maxey Hair, as had Chelsey Lee who continues in that same role, alongside Laura. Laura has fourteen years of hairdressing experience to call upon, whilst many Bourne residents may have already found just how talented Ela is, having spent several of her twenty-two years in the profession at Chya Barbers on North Street. Sabrina has been six years perfecting her skills and together, the ladies create a warm, relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Maxey Hair provides the full range of ladies’ hairdressing services at very reasonable prices, which include a reduced rate for seniors. We wish Laura and her team every success, once the doors re-open and some sort of normality is resumed.

ur brain is made up of many different brain chemicals called neurotransmitters or hormones and, when balanced and working in harmony, we feel good in ourselves; our mood is good; we sleep well and can focus on the things that are important to us. Sue Ryder

Forced To Launch Its Second Urgent Fundraising Appeal of 2020

N

ational healthcare charity Sue Ryder, which runs Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice in Peterborough, is launching its second urgent fundraising appeal of 2020.

The charity is experiencing a £2 million a month shortfall, whilst its doctors and nurses continue to play a vital part in the Coronavirus effort. Sue Ryder is appealing to local people to support its urgent fundraising campaign ‘We can’t stop’ so that Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice can continue to provide the expert and compassionate end of life care it is so well known for. The hospice offers care and support to people with life-limiting conditions across the local region, as well as supporting their families. Allison Mann, hospice director of Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice, said: “Coronavirus has hit us hard. We received a wonderful response from our supporters to our emergency appeal earlier in the year. This, paired with the emergency funding that we received from the Government, covered our funding shortfall until the end of June 2020. “Unfortunately, however, our struggle continues. Our fundraising events remain cancelled for the rest of this year and our high street shops have now closed for a second time.

want to use their skills, expertise and experience to help patients and their families in the months ahead, as well continue to relieve the pressure on the NHS. However, in order to keep our services running through the winter and beyond we urgently need to secure more funding now. “We know that times are tough for everybody at the moment, so please be reassured that every bit really does help and thank you very much from all of us.” To support Sue Ryder visit: www.sueryder.org/winterappeal20

Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice

We can t stop caring.

“As we head into the winter months and coronavirus cases continue to rise, we are expecting an increase in people needing end of life care.

We’re facing an end-of-life care crisis. £21 from you could help pay for an hour of care for someone at the end of life.

Part Three

T

his month we pay our third and final visit to a fascinating pocket guide, issued “by authority of the Bourne Urban District Council” and available in the 1960s for one shilling, (five pence in pre-decimal terms). For a small market town with its 5,370 residents, it is surprising to read just how varied the “industry and commerce” section of this guide proved to be. The rapid expansion of Peterborough with job opportunities galore, prompting the daily exodus of workers on the A15, had not yet begun. Buses would transport many from the town to factories such as Blackstones in Stamford and Allis Chalmers in Essendine, but the guide outlines the range of opportunities there were to be had at the time, without you having to jump on the Delaine or strike up your Morris Minor to get to work! “Situated in a purely agricultural district,” it explains, “the industries of Bourne are for the most part connected with agriculture, including the manufacture of artificial manures, fellmongering, making of agricultural implements, a pea factory, maltings and granaries etc.” It goes on to add that market gardening was also carried on quite extensively, whilst Bourne’s water cress production was in demand over a large part of the country. Understandably, when a small town can boast such a giant on the world’s motor racing stage as the late Raymond Mays, then proud references to it must be made in any writing, or indeed conversations, of the mid-1960s. The guide tells us that “a member of one of the town’s oldest and most respected

families brought fame to his birthplace through the works that produced the E.R.A. racing car that had an international reputation. These works, situated at the eastern entrance to the town, now considerably enlarged, produce the world-famous B.R.M. cars which, in 1962, became the first British-made car to win the World Championship.” Amongst the longer established family businesses such as Wherry and Sons, T.W. Mays and Sons Ltd, the Bourne Laundry and Cleaning Services Co. Ltd. E.N. Moody and Sons Ltd, and Warners Ltd, the guide mentions several small factories manufacturing engineering parts, metal casings and ladies underwear having recently become established in the town, adding that “there are adequate sites and facilities for others of a similar type”. Returning to the earlier theme of Bourne being within an agricultural district, there is mention made in the guide of the cattle market, situated behind the Burghley Arms Hotel. “On Fair Days”, we are informed, “it is not uncommon for over 3,000 animals to be penned there”. There would also have been large numbers of animals penned in “the pig market” (as it was known) behind the Marquis of Granby pub, which is now home to Renu. Finally, a slaughterhouse was serving the town and district (“The Slipe”), in addition to an abattoir, slaughtering horses for export to the continent, (known as The Klondike”). Advertisements in the guide remind the reader how things have changed over half a century, including the length of the telephone contact numbers!

MEET HAYLEY HIBBINS

A

State Registered Podiatrist At The Wellhead Practice fter working at the Wellhead Clinic for over a year now, I thought it was time I got round to introducing myself! My name is Hayley Hibbins and I’m a State Registered podiatrist (chiropodist). I’ve lived around Peterborough and Stamford all my life. I went to Stamford High School and the University of Brighton to study an Honours Degree in Podiatry and have worked locally as a podiatrist for twentyfive years. I have two grown-up children and enjoy cooking, knitting and I’m addicted to cycling! It has been a very strange year for us all, working through the lockdown and pandemic restrictions, especially working in healthcare. We have gone to great lengths (and expense) to provide a safe service for our patients, and our wonderful receptionists have had so much extra work doing screening etc ... we just couldn’t have done it without them! Trying to look for silver linings in this dark pandemic cloud is essential to maintain one’s mental well-being and, humble as it may seem, one good thing to come out this year is a new treatment for verrucae. Although they are very common, a verruca can be extremely troublesome and hard to treat with any success, often requiring prolonged treatment. We are pleased to be able to offer a new treatment called Verrutop which is proving to be very effective and ‘patient-friendly’. Treatment can begin at the same visit as an initial consultation and usually requires a course of up to six treatment sessions over a course of six weeks or so. A mixture of organic acids kill off the verrucous tissue which is replaced by healthy tissue. It is usually painless, so it is great for nervous patients.

So, if you are suffering from verrucae or any other foot-related problems, (or want to get your feet looking their best (just in case we are allowed to go on holidays next year!) give our friendly receptionists a call and they will be happy to help.

Osteopaths and podiatrists are classed as key workers, as are those involved in ear wax removal. Due to our cleaning standards and use of PPE, we can stay open during lockdown and continue to provide you with the best care we possibly can.

EU and EEA Workers Post-Brexit

Your questions, answered by Odin HR Consultancy.

1

We employ EU nationals. What is changing, and when?

The new Immigration Act means that the free movement (the right to work and live in the UK) of EU (European Union) and EEA (European Economic Area) nationals will end at 11pm on December 31st, 2020. Non-UK nationals wanting to enter the UK and work after that date will need to apply in advance and satisfy a new points-based immigration system to be awarded a visa. EU citizens and their family members already in the UK who wish to continue living here will need to apply to the EU Settlement Scheme to remain legally resident. https://www.gov.uk/settled-statuseu-citizens-families/applying-for-settled-status . Although the deadline for applying is June 30th, 2021, EU nationals who cannot prove that they arrived in the UK before December 31st, 2020, will require sponsorship under the new points-based system. Therefore, those EU nationals already in the UK would be wise to apply before December 31st.

2

What happens next?

Depending on how long they’ve been living in the UK, EU nationals applying to the EU Settlement Scheme will be given either “settled status” or “pre-settled status”. To obtain settled status, they must have started living in the UK by December 31st, 2020 and have

been here for a continuous five-year period (known as ‘continuous residence’). Continuous residence means that they must have been in the UK for at least six months in any twelve-month period for five years (with a small number of exceptions). Pre-settled status is awarded for five years to EU nationals who do not already have five years’ continuous residence when they apply, provided that they started living in the UK by December 31st, 2021. Once they have five years’ continuous residence, they can apply to change to settled status but must do so before the expiry of their pre-settled status.

3

Should I ask for evidence from my employees before June 2021 that they have applied to the EU Settlement Scheme?

No. Until the end of that period, employer ‘Right to Work’ checks will remain as they are currently - EU nationals will be able to show their passports/ID cards to confirm their right to work in the UK. But after June 30th, 2021, you will need to check that your EU/ EEA employees have pre-settled or settled status to confirm that they have the right to work in the UK, and therefore that they are working legally for you.

4

Does this apply to people from the Republic of Ireland?

No. Irish citizens will continue to be able to enter and live in the UK.

Stamford Shakespeare Company’s Outdoor Theatre at Tolethorpe Hall is Saved Stamford Shakespeare Company needed at least £240,000 to cover its costs after this year’s performances were cancelled. On October 12th it was announced that a grant of £240,000 from the Government’s Cultural Heritage Fund had been awarded. Together with donations from supporters, as well as proceeds from a car boot sale held at the end of September, the grant will allow the theatre to reopen next year. Caroline Stephenson, Chairman of the Company said, “I simply cannot wait to welcome back our public and thank everyone involved with the ‘Save Your Theatre’ campaign for their support.”

Your Garden

DECEMBER

GARDENING TIPS

T

he long-range weather forecast, at the moment, predicts a fairly settled and mild December. So, winter digging could continue late into the month, which also helps to expose hibernating grubs which the birds can then eat. Then cover the plot to prevent weed growth, minerals being leached out by rain, and to keep the soil warm, which helps with early planting in the spring. For those days that are too wet or cold to go outside, you could do the following: • Consider what grew well this year and what you might plant next year: how about being a bit adventurous and trying something a bit out of the ordinary for a change? Here are some different vegetables you might like to try: celeriac, daikon radish (a huge radish that you can use in salads or stir fries), snake gourds, heritage crops such as purple carrots, rainbow sweetcorn and blue French climbing beans. • Clean and sharpen your garden tools, and clean seed trays, pots and other equipment to prevent any diseases carrying over to infect next year’s seedlings. Also give the shed a good tidy out and clean. There are very few crops that you can plant; however, if you have not planted them yet, you can plant garlic and onion seeds (which should be sown in trays or

36 30

pots in a gentle heat towards the end of the year). New crowns of rhubarb can be planted, or existing ones divided and replanted; bare-root fruit trees and bushes, raspberry and blackberry canes can also still be planted. Other jobs to do this month are: • Continue topping up compost and leaf mould bins, making sure that you burn or discard any plant material that looks diseased. • Manure the vegetable plot, using well-rotted manure, no need to dig in. • Earth up Brussels sprouts stems to keep them secure from strong winds and remove any brown or yellow leaves; this will prevent the spread of grey mould. • Make sure your winter brassicas are netted to prevent pigeons eating them and check for and repair any holes. • Keep picking leeks and parsnips but if the weather is very wet check that the leeks are not getting waterlogged and rotting. • December is the ideal time to prune apples and pears, gooseberries and currants. Autumn raspberries can be pruned right back to ground level between now and February. Well, the end of a strange year! Let’s hope that 2021 sees an improvement in our situation, but before then, enjoy some of the fruits of your labour on your Christmas dinner plate. A very Happy Christmas and a healthy and fruitful New Year to you all!

Christmas Lunch, Christmas Launch?

W

ith Christmas approaching, many can be forgiven for thinking that this would be a quiet time to be an estate agent… think again! With the new year on the horizon, many prospective buyers and sellers are not waiting and are beginning their search and launching their home to the market in December, in order to beat the ‘New Year Rush’. Boxing Day has proven to be extremely popular on the online platforms, such as Rightmove, with record viewing numbers being reported, year on year. It has been reported that Boxing Day is one of, if not the busiest day of the year for viewing numbers, therefore what better time to have your home online? Here, at Newton Fallowell, we are discreetly marketing numerous homes prior to Christmas, launching to the market on Boxing Day. This allows us to show our proactivity with our database of buyers, and arrange viewings, whilst beating the influx of

BY JASON TREADWELL, MANAGING DIRECTOR

properties coming to the market in the new year, who will miss out on the active Christmas period. However, the year is not over yet. Whilst we are looking ahead to the new year, it is also important to reflect on our successes through what has been a turbulent 2020 for all. These successes have come in the form of the number of properties sold and lets agreed, new instructions, many five-star reviews and awards received. We were extremely proud to have achieved national awards at the ‘Estate Agent of the Year’ Awards, prizes given out based on feedback provided from buyers, tenants, landlords and sellers who have experienced the service provided by our team. 2020 has certainly been a tricky year; however, looking back at our successes it only makes them more rewarding and encourages the Newton Fallowell team on to achieve even more in the new year. We hope that the property market starts 2021 as busy as 2020 has ended, and we look forward to assisting you in the coming year.

by Eileen Le Voi at Safe Local Trades It will come as no surprise that an increase in online shopping in 2020 has also meant a rise in scams. Interestingly, four in five online shopping fraud victims were under the age of fifty, with those in their twenties being the most likely to be victim of online shopping fraud. So while ‘tis the season of Christmas shopping, the fraudsters will be looking to make mischief and bring misery to millions. However, there are some wise words from Action Fraud when it comes to staying safe. Choose where you shop: Carry out your own research if you are buying something from a company or person you don’t know or trust. If purchasing, use a credit card if you have one, as most major credit card providers insure online purchases. Keep your devices up to date: Install the latest software and app updates. These usually contain important security updates that can protect you against fraud and identity theft. Just turn on automatic updates so your device will update itself in future. Secure your email account: A strong password is the first

What About Inheritance Tax? BY MATTHEW BIGGS – FINANCIAL PLANNER

W

hen we start out in our working lives, we all look to work as hard as we can, so we can enjoy life to the full. For some, this means going on lovely holidays all over the world; for others, this is being able to treat the family and, for some, it is simply the knowledge that they have earned the right to enjoy themselves in later life. And with any luck, over the course of time, we will start to accrue lots of assets, be it the family home, a nice car or, in some circumstances, an inheritance from a loved one. However, all of these wonderful things could end up creating a bit of a headache in later life as they might attract an Inheritance Tax bill. That said, with careful planning it could be possible to manage any potential

48

Bourne

Inheritance Tax bill that may come your way. Of course, one of the best ways to make sure you don’t attract an Inheritance Tax bill is to spend it! However, more often than not, we see clients who want to make sure their family can also benefit from the fruits of their labour. One way of doing this is to take advantage of the annual, small gift allowance, currently £3,000 per year. Or, with some trust planning, you could ensure your loved ones benefit from your hard work without the fear that some of the assets will end up with the tax man. There are many other options out there to consider and, if you would like to talk to one of our friendly and experienced Financial Planners to explore which option is best for you, then please contact our office on 01778 342291 to arrange a FREE initial consultation.

Legal Corner

AS CHRISTMAS APPROACHES... SOME LEGAL THOUGHTS ADVICE FROM RICHARD WOOD

A

s Christmas draws near in this most extraordinary of years, everyone will have differing emotions. From a legal perspective as solicitors, we continue to help our clients manage risk. There are potentially new risks if the coronavirus crisis continues over an unknown period. What has not changed is that we all need help with our legal concerns. At Double and Megson, we continue to advise and help our clients. At this time of the year we all think of family and friends more than ever. Perhaps we have not updated our will lately or we may need a Lasting Power of Attorney. Maybe we are considering a house move, remembering that the moratorium on Stamp Duty will last until the end of March 2021. Solicitors often advise and represent clients in differing types of disagreement or negotiations. There is a move towards a more conciliatory course of negotiations which is less contentious. It is, of course, never perfect but it is a well-

intentioned effort to try to reduce the costs of a dispute. That emphasis seems particularly apt at this time of the season. Whilst not perfect, it is certainly worth considering. From a present-buying perspective, consumers were given extra protection in the Consumer Rights Act a few years ago but that has still not resulted in a troublefree present or goods-buying experience. However, it has improved matters somewhat, especially in the purchase of used motor vehicles. The latter however are not that likely to fit in a Christmas present sack or down the chimney! Anyone wishing to take up the role of Santa this year will have to face restrictions and will need to socially distance. I wonder how many reindeer are needed and will they be allowed? However you choose to spend the season,

we wish you a Merry Christmas!

Home

Alto Electrical want you to get “Lit Up” for Christmas … Safely!

A

s we approach the festive season, we are all starting to think about getting our Christmas decorations down from the loft and making the home feel a bit more cheery, something I’m sure we are all looking forward to, after such a dismal year. But, before you clad your tree in twinkly lights, I just want you to check a few things to ensure that you have a safe and uneventful Christmas, for the right reasons.

Important Steps to Staying Safe at Christmas time

1

Make sure you inspect your lights. I recommend using your hands to do this, with them unplugged; just run your hands over the length of the cable, feeling for nicks and cuts. If they are damaged, do not use them.

2

Make sure you use LED Christmas lights. Old halogen or filament lamps do look pretty but they get very hot and can easily cause fires. LEDs have a low working

BY COLEEN EVERITT, ALTO ELECTRICAL LIMITED

temperature, so they are unlikely to ignite.

3 4

Check that your lights are suitable for where you are using them; outside lights will need to have a higher IP (ingress protection) rating than indoor lights. Make sure your sockets are RCD- (residual current device) protected, especially if they are feeding Christmas tree or outside lights.

How do you know if your sockets are RCD protected? In your board there should be devices that have a button with a ‘T’ or the word ‘test’ on them. These are RCDs or RCBOs (residual current circuit breakers). If you press it, it should trip the device, and this will turn off the circuit. To work out which circuits are RCD-protected, you can simply go around the house seeing what works when they are all turned off. If you are not sure if you have RCD protection, feel free to send a picture of your fuse board to our Alto Electrical Facebook page and we’ll help advise you.

Have an awesome Christmas!

Al-der Best Wishes for Christmas Time!

A

lthough this has been a very tough year for us all, Christmas is definitely coming, with all its festivities. They will probably be distinctly muted this year with potential and actual lockdowns and travel restrictions. However, I suspect many of us will still be putting up the decorations and enjoying a Christmas celebration, even if we are going nowhere. During the first lockdown, many people bought a new puppy or kitten to share their home, and the changes that happen during the holiday season can disrupt routines and be harmful to your new pet, so here are a few holiday tips to keep them safe. If you put up a Christmas tree, make sure it is secure and cannot fall over. Many a time has an owner come down to find not the star at the top of the tree, but their new little kitten swinging from the topmost branch. Larger cats tend to topple the whole thing over instead – just what you need on Christmas morning! Young dogs and cats love to investigate with their mouths and chew things they really shouldn’t

Wise Words By Deirdre Wilson

Make sure any electrical wires are well hidden and baubles are higher than your dog can reach in case they steal and swallow them. Tinsel is pretty, but terrible if eaten, as it causes blockages within the gut, so decorate the tree with safer ornaments instead. Holly, mistletoe and some flowers are toxic – lilies especially so. It is best to check and avoid having any toxic ones in the house at all. Don’t leave out bowls of chocolates, sweets, or cakes. Even the best trained dogs are given to temptation (humans are just as bad, aren’t we?) and we know that chocolate is particularly harmful to dogs. If you buy presents for your pets, make sure they are safe and indestructible. Swallowing small balls or feathers often ends up with your pet in surgery. If you want to give treats, why not give their regular one, just wrapped up, and that way you avoid any digestive upsets but let them join the fun. Talking of digestive upsets – fatty, spicy leftovers are definitely ‘no-nos’ as far as pets are concerned. Over-rich food tends to lead to gastroenteritis with its vomiting and diarrhoea. Worse still, it can lead to pancreatitis, a very painful inflammatory condition that may lead to hospitalisation of your pet. Bones are also bad news and should never be fed to a pet, especially cooked bones. They shard as they break up and can do as much damage as glass. Finally, if we do get to have visitors this year, remember your pet may not be so keen with the excitement as we are. Ensure they have a safe room or human-free zone to escape to and have their food and litter tray in a private place. So … Ho, Ho, Ho, and have a Merry Little (Safe) Christmas Cheer!

Santa’s Sleigh is on the Way, Thanks to Bourne Lions

B

ourne Lions will be out and about with Santa and his sleigh in the run-up to Christmas, whilst taking into account the Covid-19 restrictions that are in place at the time. Over the last forty-plus years, Bourne Lions Santa’s Sleigh has raised hundreds of thousands of pounds for good causes in our local community and, as in previous years, we are keen to go ahead as this may be the only opportunity that children of all ages have to see Santa, as he makes his way around Bourne and the surrounding villages.

Usually when Santa visits each street, his collectors knock on doors to alert residents to his arrival, but this year, due to Covid-19 restrictions, this will not be possible. Each day in December his route will be published on the Bourne Lions Website and Facebook page so please do look out for his arrival near you. You can track Santa and his sleigh each evening as in previous years on www.Santabourne.org. Families coming out to see Santa are asked to respect social distancing and keep two metres away from the sleigh. Unlike in past years, those of

D E CE MB E R 2020

you who come out to see Santa will unfortunately be unable to come onto the sleigh during his visit. Our “Dear Santa Letter” can be downloaded here www.bournelions.org/santas-sleigh and can be posted on the sleigh’s post box when Santa visits your street. Our collectors will, depending on the restrictions in place during December, be accompanying the sleigh and will, as in previous years, be happy to receive your donations. Alternatively, you can donate via our just giving page www.justgiving. com/campaign/BourneLionsSleigh2020. Donations can also be made via your smart phone by scanning the QR code. For those of you who shop online, you can help our local community without it costing you a penny by signing up to www.easyfundraising.org.uk/causes/ bournelions Remember, unlike some other charities, 100% of all donations received by Bourne Lions goes back into the community. Mayor COUNCILLOR COLIN PATTISON

Words from the Mayor

Dear Friends, Remembrance Day Walk A huge thank you to all those who helped and supported us on our recent Remembrance Day Walk on Sunday November 8th. There are so many people to say thank you to so, in no particular order: Lincs 4x4 Response Team, Ian Sismey the Town Clerk, Bourne Lions Club, JJ Mac Ltd, all my wonderful colleagues at Warners Midlands Plc who have been magnificent in their support, and all the individual sponsors who so kindly donated towards this event. At the time of writing, it looks like we have raised in excess of £2,500. Fiona and I are simply overwhelmed by all the kindness, generosity and well-wishing from everyone. Although we now find ourselves in Lockdown #2, it is our hope and intention to run a charity fundraising stall shortly before Christmas. Once

again, funds raised will go towards the Mayor’s charities but, at this point in time, it cannot be confirmed due to Covid restrictions and so we will wait and abide by the latest rules.

Town Council News A very busy period of Town Council meetings continues on “virtual platforms” and a start has been made on the draft budget proposals for 2021. We have recently provided winterthemed hanging baskets and the Christmas lights are starting to go up, to give the town some festive cheer at this needy time. As ever, thanks go to Trevor Wand and his team for their hard work and continuing support with the Christmas lights, and hopefully there will be a second tree and enhanced lighting in the Corn Exchange car park in addition to the tree in the Market Place. Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a safe and Happy Christmas in whatever form it takes this year, albeit a virtual one or with a “limited numbers, abiding by the government rules” type of celebration. Let’s all look forward to better times in 2021!

Take care, one and all. 70
