Introduction
Welcome to Your May Issue. Welcome to this on-line version of your favourite community lifestyle magazine. Few of us will have lived through such a period as this, responding to the lethal Covid-19 pandemic, and having to adapt our lives to new, and at times very challenging, routines, in order to keep ourselves and others virus-free. As with anything though, a positive attitude is worth its weight in gold and much of what our regular contributors are including for you here in their articles seems to bear this out. On a personal note, I feel fortunate in that our family is together, our dog (and yours truly!) are getting more exercise than ever before, and our spirits remain high, (unlike the levels in some of our bottles!) Keep healthy, stay safe and let’s look forward to happier times ahead.

Being an optimist makes me confident that much good will result from the present unnatural lives we’re all having to live. The First World War and indeed the Second World War too, are held up as examples of how our society can come together, pull in the same direction and reap rewards from co-operation rather than conflict. Amidst all the Covid-19 coverage over the last month, let it not be forgotten that we were all about to commemorate the 75th anniversary of VE Day over the weekend of May 8th – 10th with celebratory parties and parades. Unfortunately, the gatherings will not be possible, but I’m sure there will be sufficient reminders and blanket coverage across the media to compensate for that. Look out for everyone’s favourite “garden rollator king”, Captain Tom Moore, joining Dame Vera Lynn, (now 103 years old) to entertain us. The sprightly songstress has already paired up with Katherine Jenkins to release “We’ll Meet Again” to raise funds for the NHS! If you’ve not already seen the inimitable Max Boyce and his rendition of “When Just the Tide Went Out”, (available on You Tube) I can recommend this very poignant reminder that something beautiful can indeed come out of such an unnerving situation like the one were living through at the moment. Enjoy the read and let’s hope for some resolution to this crisis before too long.

Staying Home and Staying Healthy BY CLAIRE GRAY, RENU - HEALTH, BEAUTY & FITNESS
S
taying home this much certainly takes some getting used to! Just weeks ago, many of us were on the go, rushing from place to place from dawn till dusk. Now many of us are having to learn to slow down a little.
1
While we adjust to these temporary changes, it is important to incorporate some of our old lives into the new. We need to look after ourselves and stay healthy. Eating well, keeping up with exercise and keeping our minds active will make a big difference to how we feel as the days go by.
TIPS TO STAY ACTIVE It might not be possible to exercise the way you are used to, but it is so important to keep moving! Exercise improves blood flow and memory, and stimulates chemical changes that enhance your mood. The good news is there are plenty of ways to stay active, while keeping social distancing and isolation requirements.
Join an online class.
So many gyms, Pilates, yoga and dance studios have gone on-line and some are video links or live classes. You can also often access the live classes after the event, to do them in your own time in your own home. It’s a great chance to try something new, safely interact with other people outside your isolation boundaries, and fit things in at a time to suit you. Get your friends involved too so you can share the experience … the more the merrier!
2
Exercising
This is one of the reasons we are currently allowed out and about, so make sure you get out in the fresh air and go for a walk. The fresh air and change of scenery will do wonders for your body and mind. Just thirty minutes of walking every day can increase cardiovascular fitness, strengthen bones, reduce excess body fat and boost muscle power and endurance. The best part is … it’s free !
It’s a great chance to try something new!

other essential tasks that may not be as enjoyable.
Get the whole family involved
Exercise is often more fun when you do it with others, so if you can get everyone in your house involved you may be able to stay motivated for longer. Go for a family bike ride or walk around the block. For those of you that are more competitive, start a family fitness challenge and encourage each other to keep moving!
2
Phone a friend. It’s so important to stay connected and feel that you are not alone. Reaching out to friends and family is vital to your well-being. We might not be able to grab a coffee with our bestie or go for drinks after work with our friends, but there are lots of ways of staying in touch. Apps such as ZOOM, Whatsapp and Facetime give you an opportunity to speak face-to-face. It may not be the real deal, but sharing your feelings or just having a good laugh can warm the soul.

TIPS FOR LOOKING AFTER YOURSELF
Book in some activities. Normally have book club once a month? Book it in with a group video chat. Not in a book club? Great time to start one. Missing your monthly facial, manicure or pedicure? Schedule it in and do one at home. There are some great online tutorials where you can pick up some great tips!
Whether you are working from home, not currently able to work, or at home with little ones trying to home school, the chances are that things can be a bit of a challenge. The situation may not be ideal and may even be causing a bit of stress or tension. Ensure you are looking after yourself and taking some time out to reset and recharge. It’s also important not to feel alone, so reach out to friends and family when you need some support, so we can all be in this together.

Make sure you schedule some time in the day to do something you enjoy. Whether it be reading a book, watching your favourite movie, knitting or crafting, make sure you find the time. It’s important to have little things to look forward to and relax from
Eat well! As tempting as it may be to reach for that packet of crisps, bar of chocolate or ice-cream, try to resist as much as you can. To make things a little easier, fill your cupboards with as many healthy snacks as possible to limit the temptation and provide some good alternatives to snacking. Nuts, fruits, healthy dips and cut-up vegetable sticks are great to have on hand for when hunger (or boredom) strikes.
Most of all STAY SAFE – STAY HOME – and help us all PROTECT THE NHS.

irstly, best wishes of health and harmony to everyone. Whilst the long-term picture for us all is uncertain, it has been uplifting to see the way so many are adapting and looking to find ways to motivate each other using the wonders of modern technology. This, of course, is true for those with an interest in fitness and staying fit and healthy, while respecting social distancing rules and staying at home.
There are those doing daily, live fitness classes following the lead of the brilliant Joe Wicks. Locally, I have seen many superb examples. Indeed, I applaud all people and businesses in the fitness industry of the Deepings who have stepped up to provide home fitness options for the people of our town and beyond. I have decided to fill a different niche. I have filmed over twenty ‘home videos’ that I upload to a platform called ‘Vimeo.’ If you go into Vimeo and search for Matt Weston, I am the one

with the Empire Gym logo. You will also find them uploaded to the Empire Gym Facebook page @officialempiregym. Recording and uploading the videos means people can access them at any time and can revisit them as many times as they wish. They have so far had well over one thousand video views, and the feedback has been extremely positive. So, thank you! The videos take two forms... either a structured ‘class style’ tutorial with me demonstrating all exercises and then completing the full programme myself for you to follow, or I occasionally set myself a workout challenge (like five hundred press-ups) that I do and film in time lapse in the hope that it will be an inspirational spark for people to try something for themselves. I have brought no equipment home from the gym as I believe in us all being in the same boat. You will see from the videos how I simply fashioned some ‘home made dumbbells’ from tins of food from the cupboard.

Health And … I’ve even started road running (following social distancing rules)! It’s something I haven’t done since I was eighteen, but I have thoroughly enjoyed it. I have posted some ‘mid-run’ ‘vlogs’ to the video library on the Vimeo page and they too have been well received. I have received messages from people telling me the video inspired them to pull on their trainers and do the same. This is the very essence of what Empire Gym stands for - reminding people that they are infinitely capable and that ‘You can’. All of the videos have one single purpose... to uplift and motivate.
team (from different locations), competing 1001 burpees! A big thank you to Pauline Davies, Chris Shingles, Kerry Chawko, Sophie Hogan and Ben Fallows. We raised £1,000 for NHS charities. Empire Gym has a long-standing and close relationship with Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice, and they have recently launched an emergency appeal. We also have massive respect, admiration and gratitude for our NHS and care workers in all sectors at this time. So, we wanted to give something back as a business.
We have pledged, therefore, to give one hundred free memberships to NHS and care workers when We are all adapting practically and mentally Empire re-opens, whenever that will be. These are to this lockdown situation differently but, for totally free, twelve-month memberships example, to record a short video that that can be claimed by existing and/ shows me slightly out of breath but full My heart is with or new members who work in the NHS of endorphin-fuelled happiness, hope and care sector. of gloom.
Exercise is analogous for life at this time. Doing what we can, making positive movements, making progress and moving our bodies in order to shift our minds. It gives us an opportunity to celebrate what we can still do, in such hugely challenging circumstances, in order to be proud of ourselves. To have daily achievements, however small, is very important. May I say, of course though, that never do I take for granted my ability to exercise when so many are suffering. My heart is with everyone who, or whose family, has been affected by the virus and who can’t exercise at this time.
We do, however, want you to do something in return.... we need you to raise £2,600 for Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice. In effect, every £26 donated gives a free membership to someone you may know, a family member or friend who is part of the NHS and care community. Why £2600? Well, it is linked to the national “2.6 Challenge” that has been seeing people find creative ways to raise money for charities in place of the postponed London Marathon. You can find the ‘Just Giving’ link on the Empire Facebook page and also shown here: www.justgiving.com/fundraising/matt-weston6 Stay motivated. Stay positive!

Your Health
Help is at Hand from Hummingbird Hypnotherapy! BY NICOLE WOODCOCK, HUMMINGBIRD HYPNOTHERAPY
I
hope that this month finds you safe and well. It is quite surreal sitting and writing my editorial whilst trying to home educate my children and create some form of normality. At the beginning of this lockdown I was, like very many people, worried, concerned for my family and business and definitely not being ‘solution focused’ in any way. I feel very fortunate because, even though we feel like we’re on an emotional roller coaster, this situation has taught me a lot about myself. I like the slower pace in my life right now. Control within the brain is a constant, so once we feel that we are in control we usually are. This space allows us to explore and find answers to situations and, more importantly, can show us how to survive. The down side is that our primitive brain, the bit that worries and tells us all of those negative thoughts when stressed gets louder and so puts us into ‘fight/ flight state’ where we don’t do a great deal except perhaps panic, get angry or even depressed. That roller coaster of emotion I mentioned earlier, this is it … the primitive brain, the
part that responds to all those negative imagined scenarios in your head as if they are real. There is no right or wrong at the moment; your emotions belong to you and sometimes, however hard it is, we just have to sit with them. But there are a few things that can help:
1
Focussing on what you have achieved every day is a really helpful tool to acknowledge that you have done something and write it down too, so you have a visual record of it.
2
Keep to a routine - get up, get dressed and eat well. There may not be anywhere to go, but you got up and looked after yourself as soon as you got up - that’s the best start you can get.
3
Limit your screen time. I know, I know! Social media, zoom calls … it’s all gone a bit crazy, but it takes at least an hour and a half for our brain to get back to normal, once we have had screen time, so ensure regular breaks and definitely ‘down time’ before bed.
4
Remember that “to-do list” that never gets done? Now is a great time to tick off some of those things, which will give you a sense of achievement and a hit of those positive brain chemicals, serotonin and dopamine, that we all need right now.
5 6
Exercise. Take that walk, bike ride, jog around the block - your body and mind will thank you for it. Be mindful of just working day by day and don’t think too far ahead (which can create too much anxiety into the unknown). Look at what you can control and focus on those things. Remember … this won’t last forever! I am currently giving FREE guided relaxation sessions on my Facebook page at 9pm “Mindful Monday” and “Wisdom Wednesday.” And, for a bit of fun, “Face Pack Friday” - just find me @ hummingbirdhypnotherapy on Facebook and you can hop on. FREE Initial consultations are available for children and adults online during this time. Stay Safe, Stay Positive, Stay Well!

So, you’re Engaged...What’s Next? Huge congratulations! One of the most romantic, memorable and exciting times of your life. As a venue stylist of many years, I often get asked, “How do we start the planning process?”; “When should I buy a dress?”; “Where should I get married?” Well, here is my stress-free guide to wedding planning! Firstly, I think it’s really important to take time to invest in researching the overall theme and the “look” that you dream of, whether it’s a wedding abroad, outdoors, at a hotel or in a village hall. Also, visualise the decor and styling that you love - a rustic look, an elegant, grand themed wedding etc, as this will make it easier when choosing what venues to view. You want the whole wedding and theme to blend seamlessly. Agree on a sensible budget. Be sensible when it comes to your wedding budget – only spend what you can afford. You can have an amazing wedding, whatever your budget … trust me!
Decide whether you want a civil or religious wedding ceremony. This can shape your choice of venue – you could go to a wedding venue with a church nearby, or a venue that is licensed to hold a civil ceremony. View and book your venue. Start looking for your venue when you have an idea of how much you have to spend, how many guests you want and what kind of ceremony you’ll be having. Make sure you have a list of important questions to ask your wedding venue, so there are no surprises later on. If you're you' opting for a venue that is licensed to hold the civil ceremony, ask if they use one room for the whole event or two rooms. This makes a big difference for venue stylists. Book your church and registrar. If you’ve decided on a church wedding, you’ll need to book the church, and if you’re having a civil ceremony you’ll need to book the registrar. Make sure they’re available on the same day you have your venue booked for! Some venues can help you with this process. p
gdcweddingsandevents.com
Draft a rough guest list. Writing a guest list can be a bit stressful, but if you figure out what size venue you need and how much money you can allocate, you can easily get quotes online and then view the ones that match your budget.

here is nobody alive today who has lived through anything like the times that we are experiencing now. Covid-19 and the subsequent lockdown have turned everyone’s life upside down.
Hopefully, the initial shock has passed for most people and you are getting used to the new normal, whatever that looks like for you. It is different for everyone. For me it is still being at work, either from my dining room or from my office, an office that used to be buzzing with nine people in a fairly small space, but one that now seems cavernous since there is only me! So, what should we do in this most unusual of times?
1
Protect – Most people have already gone into protection mode; they have secured their assets, analysed their income, cut out the non-essentials and simplified and streamlined their lives. You will know what is most important to you; most likely it is family and friends. You will realise what you are missing the most and what you are not missing at all.
2
Secure – Now we have our new “normal”, what are we doing to secure it? Have you ensured that the core aspects of your life are built on a solid foundation, or have you identified that there is a little work to do to stabilise your core? Whether it is our health, our mindset, our finances or our planning, each of us has an opportunity in this pause to take stock and stabilise the core aspects of our own lives.
3
Prepare – What’s the world going to look like when this is all over? Are you going to go back to the person you were before? Now is the time to plan, to learn and to broaden your horizons. If you are facing adversity now, then make a plan to get out of the situation, get advice and accept help.
There seems to be more goodwill in the world now than there has been for years, so make the most of it. If your life is great right now, plan to ensure it stays that way; maybe you could help those who are not so fortunate. Whatever your situation, be ready for when the world is released. Don’t think it will happen overnight, because it won’t, so make sure that your new plan can accelerate alongside the rest of the world.
4
Above all … enjoy! – There will be many more people, sadly, who are suffering bereavement, and many more who are facing hardship. But the fact is … the world still turns. Celebrate the lives of the loved ones we have lost. Use your furlough to fulfil your ambitions. At the very least, enjoy the sunshine, nature and the simpler things in life that are there in abundance – we were just all too busy, too preoccupied, to notice them before. Stay safe, stay healthy and, if there is anything we can do to help, then please give us a call.

May Gardening Tips
W
hat strange times we are living through at the moment and, with the lockdown in operation, we need to keep fit both in mind and body. What better way than to enjoy your garden, either by working in it or sitting with a cuppa (and cake!) or glass of something a little stronger, admiring your hard work? Much research has been carried out into the health and well-being benefits of gardening, the garden and green spaces. Conclusive evidence shows that our general physical and mental health are improved and the benefits of being in the garden run much deeper than just exercise. A King’s Fund report on the health benefits of gardening found that they were broad and diverse, with research showing significant reductions in depression and anxiety and improved social functioning. Gardening can also help maintain independence and prevent cognitive decline. Gardeners might also be delighted to learn that the number of calories burnt from thirty minutes of gardening is comparable to playing badminton, volleyball or practising yoga! At the time of writing the weather has been amazing, I can’t remember having such a warm and sunny April and yet I have looked at records from the past few years and on a number of occasions it has been “the hottest Easter on record!” However, we do seem to have been blessed with some particularly good April weather and as many of us are at home there is plenty of time to spend in the garden or at the allotment, let’s hope it continues. The only problem is how do we get plants etc if the garden centres are closed? I have bought seeds and some summer bulbs from the supermarket, although some of them are in short supply, and Waterside Garden Centre are taking orders online – I received a delivery of compost within a few days of ordering. There are other
20

companies still functioning online but stocks are low and some delivery times long, try www.gardeningexpress.co.uk or www.directseeds.co.uk I know that because we now have the time a lot of people, who do not normally grow their own, are trying their hand at growing their own produce and flowers from seeds. I took an idea from Adam Frost on Gardener’s World and planted rocket seeds in a spare disposable aluminium turkey tray that I did not use at Christmas. This started me off on a mission for any old containers I could use for growing; I found broken plastic boxes, small wooden crates etc – so long as there is sufficient drainage you can use anything – and now I have an array of ‘junk’ in a corner of the garden. You can also intersperse vegetable plants in your mixed border. For those who do have vegetable plots or allotments, May is a very busy time and a difficult month to judge as the weather can vary: we sometimes get lulled into a false sense of security and think that summer has arrived, but watch the weather in case of late frosts and protect any tender seedlings. Also take care to harden off plants that have been grown indoors or under cover before planting. A cheap way to protect tender young plants is to use ‘bottle cloches’. Cut down the two litre plastic drinks bottles; they are useful for protecting young runner beans and peas. Some of us only set aside a small plot for growing fruit and vegetables so to maximise your space you can try: • Intercropping – sowing two crops in the same row, one slow and one fast growing. Fast growing crops include Oriental salad leaves, lettuces, radishes, spring onions, spinach and spring-planted shallots. Slow growers are parsnips, sweetcorn, tomatoes, leeks, winter cabbage, cauliflower, sprouting broccoli and Brussels sprouts.
A R R IL 2 0 2 0
Your Garden
• Catch Cropping – sowing a fast- growing crop in the brief period a plot might be empty. Also, with the warmer weather come the pests! To get rid of aphids try these suggestions: • Stir together one quart of water, one tsp of washing-up liquid and a pinch of cayenne pepper. • Peppermint, spearmint and pennyroyal naturally deter aphids and ants, so plant (or put them in pots) throughout the plot. • Plant flowers that attract the pest predators such as marigold and nasturtiums. Black fly is a real pest on broad beans and nipping off the growing buds help or a quick blast with a hose or try one of the tips above. Jobs to do this month include: • Earth up potatoes. • Cover carrots with netting to stop carrot fly damage. • Harden off and plant out vegetables sown earlier. • Pot on growing plants. • Put up bean and pea supports. • Pick flowers off new strawberries to prevent them cropping in their first year. • When watering young plants and seedlings, it is better to water less frequently but more thoroughly as this gets down to the roots. If you water lightly it may only wet the surface of the soil and the roots may be encouraged to stay near the surface where they are more likely to suffer from drought damage. • Seeds to sow out this month are too numerous for me to list but a few include carrots, beetroot, French beans, lettuce, spring onions, salad leaves and peas. • Try ‘succession sowing’ a small batch of seeds every two or three weeks and you should have a steady supply rather than a glut: it will also help to maximise your chances of successful germination. • Indoors you can sow chillies, courgettes and squashes, runner beans, sweetcorn, aubergines and cabbages. Let’s hope for some good weather for growing and planting – enjoy!

Now is a Great Time to Review (YOU’VE GOT THE TIME!)
F
BY MATTHEW BIGGS - LIBERTY PARTNERSHIP LTD
irst and foremost, I want to pass on my best wishes to you all. We are in very trying times currently and, for me, it’s times like this that really make you appreciate the important things in life. The health and safety of our family, friends and colleagues all take precedence, but as normal life has ground to a halt and most of us being confined to comfort of our home, an odd side-effect has emerged … time! As most of the pastimes we all enjoyed such as pubs, breaks away and sporting events have been put on hold, we now have an abundance of time on our hands. If social media is anything to go by, a lot of people are using their time to either start new indoor exercise regimes or bake banana bread (not too sure about the latter, personally!).
22
D I S C O V E R I N G
And with all this extra time, wouldn’t it be great to finally get around to doing some of the tasks you’ve been putting off? If I was a betting man, I would say a lot of you will have a pile of statements, be it bank, mortgage, pensions or investments which you probably have put in safe keeping but not really given much thought to. Given the ongoing circumstances, I would suggest that now, more than ever, would be a good time get this paperwork out and review your current financial picture. We have seen the impact Coronavirus has had on all aspects of life and this will be no different with regards to your mortgage, pensions and any investments you might have. We have seen the financial markets around the globe impacted heavily by the

Coronavirus pandemic, and if your pension and investments are exposed to these then you would have seen an impact first-hand. When we work with clients, we truly believe in educating and empowering them. Come the end of April, we will have spoken to all our clients to review the current situation with them, and the overall message we’re getting is one of calmness. Many clients have explained to us that, thanks to this onus that we put on educating them, they are not worried and were thankful that we have reached out to them. Although our office door is closed, we are still open for business. So, if you dig out some statements that could benefit from a review, or would like to explore what options you have, then please contact our office on 01778 342291 to arrange a FREE initial consultation.

Property News
The Personal Touch BY PAUL BRIGGS
How Briggs Residential Don’t Just Match People to Property Many estate agencies simply act as a broking service that matches people to property. However, we are acutely aware that there is far more to successful selling than this alone. Indeed, over 30% of property sales in this country fail to reach completion, falling through for various reasons. One of the main reasons is that a buyer simply gets cold feet and withdraws as a result of “buyer remorse”. This is a familiar phenomenon to estate agents and occurs when a buyer feels overwhelmed by the apparent enormity of the decision to buy and takes the more comfortable “low-risk” option and does nothing. Perhaps the buyer is offered another property, which they prefer, or something else comes on the market that makes the price they have offered on your home look expensive. Your buyer may lose their job or get a promotion; they might decide to get married or divorced; they
might inherit or win a fortune; or their business may be experiencing difficulties. Whilst these types of issues are generally unavoidable and naturally have a profound effect on people’s decision to move, the main problem concerns timing. Because offers in this country are not binding until exchange of contracts, the longer the time between offer and exchange, the greater the opportunity there is for the buyer or seller to decide to withdraw. We go to great lengths to help you move and seek to become very familiar with your circumstances and plans. Our agent will usually be the same person who negotiates for you and who will be thoroughly involved in any linked transactions. This is why we do not have a separate “sales progression” department. We find our clients appreciate the level of personal dedication and accountability provided by a single point of contact, which in turn leads to understanding, trust, and a speedy conclusion.

Lockdown Tails
A Dog’s Life...
Luna’s Lockdown Diary
S
omething's changed around here lately, but I can't put my paw on what it is... the Hoomans that I live with are ALWAYS HOME – I mean, ALL OF THEM, ALL OF THE TIME! Hooman Dad used to leave the house every morning and then come back again at feeding time at the end of the day but now, instead of leaving in his car, he walks up to the end of the garden and goes into what looks like a huge, wooden kennel – I think I've heard them call it the 'offiss'? Dunno, just looks like a big posh kennel to me! He comes back into the house for feeds occasionally during the day and sometimes I go up there to see him and ask if he wants to play but he usually just tries to get me to lie down in the kennel while he does whatever it is that he's doing – boring! I then whine for a bit until he lets me out – doesn't normally take long. Walks are way more fun at the moment though! We all go together – Hooman Dad, Hooman Mum and the two smaller Hoomans (although sometimes they don't seem to want to go and they make loud, whining noises which seem to make Hooman Mum and Hooman Dad a bit cross). But anyway, off we go, to all my favourite places like the fields or by the river. We used to stop and meet other Hoomans and their dogs along the way but now we seem to give everyone else that we see a wide berth... I mean, I know I sometimes smell a bit but I'm pretty sure it's not that bad?! So, all in all, home life is pretty good – I'm getting loads more attention! Before 'the change', a lot of the time it was just me and Hooman Mum at home. Her 'offiss' is in the house and when she would go in there, I would just go and have a nap somewhere

nearby (sometimes on the sofa when she wasn't looking). She seems ok but I think the two smaller Hoomans can be quite disobedient and they ask for food way more than I do! They ask for something called 'a snack' A LOT during the day... Hooman Mum sometimes lets them have one but this is usually accompanied by an eye roll and some muttering under her breath which I can't understand but it sounds a bit like 'for duck's sake' – I don't know what ducks have to do with snacks but I've seen them down by the river before... maybe they're always hungry too? Hooman Mum seems to cheer up when she opens a big bottle of something red. I don't know what it is but her and Hooman Dad often sit and have a few glasses of it in the evening when the smaller Hoomans have gone upstairs for the night (although they do sometimes come back down and ask for another snack and then the eye rolling starts up again). One thing I am a bit sad about though is the change when someone delivers something to the house... I used to love hearing a knock at the door because it usually meant there was someone new to meet and sniff and get a fuss from but now, no one stops long enough to say hello or pat me on the head! I'm a Labrador for goodness sake – I have an unflappable desire to be everyone's friend but I can't even get close... I have heard the Hoomans use the words 'social distancing' a lot lately and wonder if this is what they mean? Whatever it is, I hope things go back to normal soon before we all go barking mad...

Pets and Vets
Man-made Feline Disease
“
He’s losing weight because he’s getting old” is a common statement we often get from owners and it is true that older cats tend to have less muscle mass compared to young, healthy ones. It’s the same in humans, as we tend to exercise less as we get older, but age is not the only reason for weight loss in cats. A very common reason, especially if your cat is still eating well and active, is hyperthyroidism, the most common hormonal problem in the older cat. The thyroid produces too much thyroid hormone, and as this is responsible for the metabolism of the body (how quickly we burn up our energy) then these cats are burning off more weight than they can replace. They start demanding lots of food and can become more demanding in general. The heart speeds up and they can become quite grumpy. The disease first appeared in the 1980s and ’90s and quickly spread around the globe. Because of its recent appearance, it is assumed that hyperthyroidism must be man-made, either due to diet or environment but, as yet, no definitive cause has been established.
are required to monitor the treatment and ensure other diseases are not present. •
•
Wise Words By Surgery to remove the Deirdre Wilson overactive gland is highly effective but does carry risks especially of damaging the tiny parathyroid glands next to it. The most recent development in treatment therapy is radioactive iodine. This has shown to be highly effective, safe, and only one dose is needed to permanently treat the disease. The radioactive iodine targets and kills the abnormal cells. However, it is expensive and needs hospitalisation for several days. As more specialist referral services offer this procedure, the costs have reduced, and a one-off treatment is comparable in price to lifelong daily medication.
Future research may reveal the cause of this disease, but in the meantime there are effective treatments available so if your cat is losing weight, please get it checked.
There are four methods of treating the disease, each with a variable success rate. •
As the thyroid relies on iodine to function, eliminating iodine from the diet can help. There are prescription diets that do this, but are only successful in single cat households, where your pet does not go outside. In areas close to the sea, there is too much natural iodine around for this method to work.
•
Daily medication with drugs to reduce the thyroid gland output is the most common treatment used. Tablets or liquids are given once or twice a day and are effective, but regular blood tests

Keep ‘Kalm’ and Leave it to Lizzie! At this most unusual of times with almost everything in total “lockdown”, it is reassuring to know that an enterprising, animal-loving pet-sitter is offering a wide range of ‘Natural Dried’ quality pet food for dogs, cats and rabbits, either for collection or for local delivery. Pet owners need not worry about running out of food, nor getting involved in the supermarket ‘trolley wars’, with panic buying a sad feature of the moment. In “normal” times, Lizzie Hudson from Deeping St James would offer a very popular pet-sitting service at your home, but that is much less likely in the present situation. Instead, she is focusing all her considerable energy on the provision of pet food. For all enquiries and some outstanding reviews, please visit www.deepingkittykare.com or e-mail Lizzie at deepingkittykare@gmail.com.

Figures shown are for comparability purposes; only compare fuel consumption and CO2 figures with other vehicles tested to the same technical procedures. These figures may not reflect real life driving results, which will depend upon a number of factors including the accessories fitted (post-registration), variations in weather, driving styles and vehicle load. There is a new test used for fuel consumption and CO2 figures (known as WLTP). The CO2 figures shown however, are based on a calculation designed to be equivalent to the outgoing (NEDC) test cycle and will be used to calculate vehicle tax on first registration. The range of figures stated covers the entire Volkswagen Golf model range including all-electric, hybrid and petrol/diesel vehicles. All-electric vehicles are zero emissions while driving. Hybrid vehicle figures were obtained using a combination of battery power and fuel. For more information, please see www.volkswagen.co.uk/owners/wltp or consult your retailer. Data correct at 12/19. Figures quoted are for a range of configurations and are subject to change due to ongoing approvals/changes. Please consult your retailer for further information. Official fuel consumption figures for the Golf model range in mpg (litres/100km): Combined 0 (0.0) - 141.2 (2). Combined CO2 emissions 0-164g/km.
