City of Lugano Lugano is the most important city in Southern Switzerland, a true bridge between the European zone that overlooks the Mediterranean and the North. The wide range of accommodation and numerous activities on offer make Lugano a paradise for every age group, whatever the budget or tastes are.
Chiesa Santa Maria degli Angeli Via Nassa starts from Piazza della Riforma and is characterised by a long row of porticos, with many important shops. At the end of Via Nassa there is the church of Santa Maria degli Angeli, very well-known at international level since the inside houses the most famous frescoes of Switzerland’s Renaissance period: "Christ’s Passion and Crucifixion" and "Last Supper" executed in 1529 by Bernardino Luini, famous North Italian painter from Leonardo Da Vinci’s circle.
Lakeside Thanks to its natural context and the numerous modern sculptures you find all around, the lakeside is Lugano’s best visiting card. It represents an artistic and environmental attraction that nobody should miss. The lakeside reaches around the wide gulf for more than two kilometres from Paradiso to the lido (beach). This walk offers unforgettable views over the bay, particularly at dawn.

Parco Ciani and Villa Ciani This city park, commonly called Ciani Park, is a green oasis of more than 60,000 sqm sloping down to the lake, full of flowerbeds and rare trees. It is the locals’ and tourists’ favourite place for having a walk enjoying the alternating views of the open space of the lake and the green cover overhead. Villa Ciani is surrounded by the City Park and represents, with its astounding beauty, one of the most enchanting corners of the gulf of Lugano. The name of the Villa and of the park is connected to the brothers Ciani that rebuilt the villa between 1840 and 1843 as it is today.

Piazza Riforma Piazza della Riforma, Lugano’s main square, is the meeting point between the promenade along the lakeside and the beating heart of the town. As a backdrop to the vivacity of the stalls you can admire the balconies of the buildings full of flowers, not least of which is the Civic Building (1845), a prominent element of Lombard neoclassical style. The building is characterised by a wide internal yard, surrounded by a four-sided portico with a vestibule near Piazza della Riforma, where you can admire two statues by Vincenzo Vela, the most famous sculptor from Ticino of the 1800’s.
Via Nassa Via Nassa, Lugano’s number one shopping destination, accompanies you during your shopping outings with its elegant and sophisticated atmosphere. Shopping in ancient Ticino was rather limited. At least if compared to today’s possibilities. In 1800 the basic staples were pasta, rice, oil and candles for lighting, Marseilles soap, clothing and shoes. Wool was often spun at home and produced by one’s own sheep; cloth was made from hemp and flax. As to the history of clothing, experts often debate as to its origin.

Lugano Region Go by boat or by road and embark on a journey of enchanting discovery: the villages surrounding the lake and the mountains are worth much more than a first glance. They run peacefully down to the lake and sometimes occupy a more precipitous position. Take your time and adapt your rhythm to the situation. The landscape has not been spoilt by excessive urbanisation and its natural balance of mountains, hills and lowlands makes it an agreeable place to be in any season.
Caprino and Cantine di Gandria The village of Caprino and Cantine di Gandria are ideally situated above the rugged coastline across the lake from Lugano. These small conglomerations look like small towns, but in reality, they are comprised only of cellars that are perfectly suitable for the conservation of wine and cheese. In Summer, these places are frequented during the day as well as in the evenings. They are an ideal place to spend some hours enjoying the coolness of the cellars, have a snack or a typical local meal, or rest underneath the trees while enjoying the view from the terraces above the lake. Cantine di Gandria and Caprino can be reached only on foot or by boat: this is the secret of such peaceful places.
Carona This district of Lugano is an ancient and attractive centre, which boasts an impressive heritage of many architects, sculptors and artists who left the magnificent proof of their art throughout the village in its decorated churches and villas. The village is extremely well preserved, harmonious, and characterised by narrow alleys and small squares. One can admire not only richly decorated and stylish houses, but also the 16th century parish church of Saint George, with its sumptuous interior, and the adjacent Town Hall. The latter was built in 1591 and has an elegant five-arched portico, a facade decorated with intriguing trompe l’oeil and the twelve primitive Swiss Cantons’ Arms. 8

Caslano Caslano, a charming village in the Malcantone region situated on the shores of Lake Lugano, is dominated by the homonymous mount, also called Sassalto, which is 500 m high and mostly surrounded by the lake. The walk around Monte Caslano enables you to discover the region’s rare and varied vegetation, a characteristic slice of the geological and botanical diversity of the Ticino landscape. The nature trail begins and ends at Via Stremadone and lasts about 1½ hour. An excursion to Caslano can easily be combined with a visit to the Alprose Chocolate Museum and the Fishing Museum.
Gandria Gandria is a romantic fishing village anchored to the steep lake side at the foot of Monte Brè. It is situated about 5 km from Lugano. The centre of the village, which is closed to traffic, is comprised of houses, built into the mountain side, which are reached by very steep steps and narrow lanes. Some of the houses date back to the 16th and 17th centuries and are decorated with frescoes and decorative stucco. In the centre of the village you can find the 16th century church San Virgilio, with its sumptuous Baroque interior and its tall medieval bell tower. Last, but not least, Gandria offers wonderful vistas and a surrounding "landscape of dreams".
Morcote The shady arcades, the characteristic little alleys, the wonderful Italian villas, and interesting monuments as well as luxuriant subtropical vegetation all make Morcote the pearl of the Ceresio Region. A very well known tourist centre situated on the lake’s edge, Morcote is one of the most visited places in Ticino and possesses incredible artistic monuments. It has 404 steps leading up to the impressive Renaissance Baroque church of "Santa Maria del Sasso", considered to be a masterpieces of the PreAlps Region. From its terraced cemetery, commanding views over the Italian part of Lake Lugano as well as the Medieval Captain Tower can be enjoyed. Travel & Meeting Guide – Discover

Parco San Grato The San Grato Park lies in Carona, it extends 690 m a.s.l. with an exceptional panoramic view across the surroundings over the peak of the alpine chain. The entire park, with its 62,000 sqm, hosts the largest and most varied collection of azaleas, rhododendrons and conifers in the region. It is also location for a special "art trail": 21 sculptures of local artists are spread throughout its area. The park also boasts four thematic walks, a restaurant, a children’s playground and a grill area.
Sessa The itinerary passes throghout Sessa aims at highlighting the tokens of past history and of the natural environment and proposes much food for thought on the relationship between man and water in the past and in the present. The trail proposes a walk through a precise part of our territory between two typical villages. Nature and history offer hints and traces, both ancient and recent, all to be discovered in this corner of the region. Because it is only through the knowledge and awareness of the past and of its relationship with the present that we can concretely face a future, which has already begun.

Mountain Paths Lugano is at the centre of a region which guarantees a wide range of excursions of all kinds in every season of the year. The efficiency of the urban and extra-urban transport system makes it very easy and fun to plan a trip. It is highly suggested to spend a few hours in the wonderful nature of the region, where different landscapes are concentrated in a limited area: the lake and its typical villages, the hills with their slopes, the mediumhigh mountains with their woods, the pasture lands and the alpine huts which guarantee hospitality everywhere.

Corticiasca - Monte Bar - Roveredo You’ll pass through a series of woods, meadows and alpine pastures; this long walk leads you to the discovery of a multi-faceted landscape that initially brings you to Monte Bar, the trek’s highest point, offering a 360° view over the entire region. Following the mountain crest, you then reach Motto della Croce, where it’s mandatory to stop and admire a splendid close-up view of the Capriasca Valley. The descent then proceeds in the direction of the Roveredo Mountains, where at first you’ll come across pasturelands and later several quaint rustic villages. It’s also possible to shorten the excursion by using the forest road that connects the Monte Bar Hut to Motto della Croce.
Monte Brè – Monte Boglia – Alpe Bolla Because there is no means of transport and in general no streets that reach the majestic panoramic mountain Monte Boglia, this is for sure one of the most unspoilt and enchanting places in Ticino. The first 700 metres can comfortably be travelled by the Monte Brè funicular. From the summit of the mountain you easily reach the village of Brè in 15 minutes. A steep 2-hour walk starts under refreshing chestnut trees and continues amid scenic panoramas up to the summit of Monte Boglia. After passing the Alpe Bolla (mountain pasture) where you can get some refreshment in the alpine hut of the same name, the path following the slope brings you back to Brè. 14

Nevere (ice cellars) – Monte Generoso The most interesting route is to take the rack railway which reaches the top in 45 minutes. The path from the top (1,600 m) goes along the eastern ridge to the settlement at Nadigh (1,295 m). It is easy to catch sight of a circular construction under a tree - one of the ten "nevere", or ice cellars, on this path. Along the route you can see other nevere, some in a precarious condition. The first restored nevera is at Genor Caseret (N22) and the second one which can be visited is at Genor-Tegnoo (N27). The path climbs gently and reaches the railway; at the junction you can go back to the top or descend to Bellavista (1,200 m) and catch the train there.
San Salvatore – Morcote The San Salvatore funicular takes you from Lugano up to the peak in 12 minutes. The unique setting allows visitors to enjoy the magnificent panorama over the lake, the plain of Lombardy and the majestic peaks of the Swiss Alps. An extraordinary hike in the woods takes you through the charming village of Ciona and then on to Carona. After visiting the Botanical Park San Grato, you can progress towards Alpe Vicania where you can enjoy splendid views over Lake Lugano. On your way down to Morcote you pass the church of Santa Maria del Sasso. In Morcote, there is plenty of life under the lakeside arcades. Food and Wine Ticino merges time-honoured local food traditions and the best of modern specialties art. As you travel through the territory you will discover an incredible variety of specialities and the secrets of many Switzerland’s world famous gastronomic products: taste wine with the winegrower, take a tour of a chocolate or cheese factory, organize a culinary excursion or event.
Local Gastronomy Nowhere you will taste a better risotto or sip a finer Merlot, enjoy more succulent cold cuts or such appetising delicacies. Ticinese cuisine is rustic and simple yet also curiously complex, using local olive oil and the freshest ingredients such as mushrooms, chestnuts and alpine herbs to create unique dishes or add a distinct flavour. First courses of pasta or hearty soups are commonly followed by local dishes such as game or fish grilled over an open fire, accompanied by the regional staple, a creamy polenta. Organising a dinner on a shaded terrace or around the roaring fire of a grotto is a perfect way to savour local delicacies while soaking in the warm and cosy atmosphere.
Fine Dining There is nothing like a unique Ticinese gastronomic experience! As you travel through the territory there are numerous exclusive restaurants for more sophisticated dining, many awarded with stars, forks, chef’s hats and other different prestigious recognitions. Ticino is an appealing region and its culinary delights are well known. Its tradition as a land of great chefs dates back to medieval times and is confirmed by today’s typical Mediterranean style fused with a touch of Northern ingredients.

Local Products The true treasures of Lake Lugano region are its specialties and typical local products. Most of those products are available directly at the producer’s shop, in the many specialty stores, or even at the typical markets. The Ticinese grappa, which owes its origin to the distillate of American grapes. The infusion of grappa and the hull of walnuts, known as "Ratafià Nocino" has achieved renown and mystery thanks to the fact that, traditionally, monks were the sole keepers of the secrets of its preparation. Chestnuts, typical fruit of the vegetation to the South of the Alps. Various kinds of honey. Ticinese bread, prepared in accordance with traditional craftsmanship techniques.
Wine Tasting No meal would be complete without a glass or two of the awardwinning "Merlot del Ticino" wine. Tastings and guided tours are offered by more than 30 wineries across the Mendrisiotto and Lugano region. Some of them are located in traditional cellars carved into the mountain rock, some in stylish new and more modern establishments, but equally enjoyable wineries. In the various wine cellars of the region, visits usually consist of a short walk through the vineyards, a visit to the cellar and its aging barrels, an explanation of the different wine-making techniques and conclude with an actual wine tasting.
Beer Tasting Craft beer is big business with a passionate following of consumers who appreciate the nuances of beer flavour, texture, and character as much as their wine-loving brethren. In the Lugano region interesting craft beers are appearing, trying to recover the tradition that has always existed in our land producing this type of beverage. You can visit their factories or enjoy drinking beer in gourmet stores or specialized bars with a long tradition, where you can taste from the famous lager (low temperature fermentation) or red beers (ale) and black (scout) produced with highly fermentation or hot.

Theatre and Dance Crucially located in the heart of Europe, Lugano's love for art encourages innovative collaborations and artistic experimentation. The City hosts a vibrant calendar of theatre shows, many playing on some of the country’s top stages. It’s also home to one of the new iconic venues in Switzerland, the LAC, hosting theatre, opera, ballet, concerts and comedy shows throughout the year.
Traditions Three main traditions add yearly some zest to the picturesque city centre of Lugano: Easter, Autumn and Christmas. "Pasqua in Città" (Easter in the City) welcomes the arrival of tourists with a very attractive Easter market, tasting of local products, concerts and animation for both children and adults. During Easter time one cannot miss the "Processioni Storiche Pasquali" (Historical Easter Procession) in the old town of Mendrisio; this event recalls medieval sacred plays. The "Festa d’Autunno" (Autumn Festival) in Lugano and the "Sagra dell’Uva" (Grape Harvest Festival) in Mendrisio offer two weekends dedicated to folklore, gastronomy and typical Ticinese products.

Golf Club Lugano The Golf Club Lugano, founded in 1923, today has the privilege of offering its guests an attractive 18 hole course which is technically interesting and charmingly landscaped. Laid out on both sides of the Magliasina River in the area of Magliaso-Caslano (8 km from Lugano), the course winds in and out among lines of birch-trees, ancient oak-trees and colourful flowerbeds. Thanks to a careful choice of natural and artificial hazards, every hole has its own distinct features and gives the player the opportunity to admire suggestive glimpses of a panorama which is one of the most beautiful and typical of the Canton Ticino.

Orienteering The orienteering expert loves to move in the silence of the forests and into difficult territory away from the general public and from the overcrowded stadium. Nature is his world, map and compass are his tools. The orienteering has its origins in the vast Scandinavian forests in the Nordic countries. Combining mental and tactical racing is a discipline that particularly challenges physical condition and mental preparation. The aim of orienteering is to precisely locate defined stations by choosing the best way to reach the end as quickly as possible. The competitions are divided into different classes of age and performance. It is a sport that the whole family can enjoy.

Rock Climbing
Travel & Meeting Guide – Discover
Rock climbing became established in Ticino in the immediate post-war period on the rocky walls of the Denti della Vecchia, a characteristic mountain overlooking the Val Colla and Lugano area, and has grown in popularity over the years. The Lugano region is now a real paradise for rock climbing enthusiasts, who can put themselves to the test on granite, gneiss or dolostone walls thanks to the presence of numerous cliffs equipped for climbing and a particularly favourable climate.

Traditional Bocce Game The game of bocce (bowls) ball dates back to ancient Greek and Roman and is still today a popular traditional sport in the region. Bocce ball is a lawn game, as well as a competitive sport where two individuals or two teams can play. Bocce plays on a levelled, rectangular court with eight bowls and a smaller, white ball known as the "pallino" (jack). Aiming to land the ball as close to the "pallino" as possible, players stand on one side of the court at the foot line and "bowl" or underarm throw the ball to the opposite end of the court.

Trekking, Hiking and Nordic Walking The mountains that embrace the Lugano valleys provide numerous charming walking trails amidst nature. These paths allow hikers to discover a rich cultural landscape and to enjoy an unrivalled view over Lake Lugano, the Alps and Northen Italy. One of the most attractive excursions is the "Lugano Trekking" which consists of a three-day walk along a fascinating itinerary that begins in Brè, above Lugano, and ends in Tesserete, Capriasca valley. Shorter, alternative itineraries are also suggested, or enjoy the highly effective and healthy nordic walking (with special walking poles) that can be practised almost everywhere in the region.
Water Sports Lake Lugano and the surrounding rivers offer its visitors several possibilities of water sports: diving, fishing, motor boating, rowing, sailing, water-skiing, wakeboarding and windsurfing and stand-up paddle. Follow the new trends of sport activities by experiencing a day of river rafting or canyoning, all in security because accompanied by an expert. A nautical map with restaurants, grotti and hotels with mooring, rentals, shipyards and water sport courses is at disposal at the tourism offices.

The only "German-speaking" settlement in Ticino is one of Switzerland’s most charming villages. The unique typical wooden and rock built "Walser" houses and the particular stalls scattered around the nucleus mark the village scape of Bosco Gurin. They are a living testimony of the Alpine "Walser" population that more than seven centuries ago colonized the valley, coming from Valais. Situated on 1,503 metres above sea level above the Maggia valley, it is the highest mountain village in Ticino.

Geo-Park in the Gorge of the river Breggia - Cement Museum The Park ranges over an area set between the communes of Balerna, Castel San Pietro, Morbio Inferiore and Morbio Superiore. The Infopoint of the park is situated near the Ghitello mill, where you can watch milling taking place. The Path, which is inside the park itself, takes visitors on the exploration of long tunnels under the hill of Castel San Pietro; these are places which were quarried by man to take out the raw material used to prepare cement. The reclaimed area is all accessible, apart from the real cement path, and can be visited in small groups.
Meride - A sea of memories Surrounded by Lake Lugano Monte San Giorgio, rises like a majestic green pyramid in the southernmost part of Switzerland. Below the chestnut woods the Monte San Giorgio conceals geological and palaeontological features which are unique in the world with regarding to the exceptionality, uniqueness and perfect preservation of fossils of marine reptiles and fish, but also of rare earth species 230 million years old: this enabled it to become part of the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2003.

Parco Archeologico Tremona-Castello Excavations have revealed that the hill was settled as early as the Neolithic period, with occupation continuing in the Bronze Age, the Iron Age, the Roman period and the Middle Ages. The remains of the medieval settlement help us understand in minute detail the daily life of a medieval rural community. Illustrated panels displayed on key points, provide information about the black- smith and his workshop, food, women and their activities, allowing you to understand what life was like, how houses were built, how the rich and poor lived in medieval times.

The natural park of the Gole della Breggia finds itself in the lower part of the Valley of Muggio, between Castel San Pietro, Balerna, Morbio Inferiore and Morbio Superiore. The surface is of 65 ht, mainly woodland, and extends around the gully excavated by the river Breggia. On the land are a few buildings, mines and roads. The natural landscape is exceptionally interesting, especially for its geological and paleontological patrimony: the rocks that appear on the surface are hundreds of millions of years old.

This small, picturesque valley may be reached by the Ritom funicular (one of the steepest in the world) or by car up to the Lake Ritom dam. The Piora valley is an alpine valley at 1,800-2,000 m and is about 8 kilometres long. It comprises about 20 small lakes, the biggest being the artificial Lake Ritom and the Lake Cadagno, close to which there is the Centre for Alpine Biology of Piora. The lush alpine pastures generally feature interesting flora with some very unusual botanic species.

Bellinzona still today reveals to its visitors a rich historical and geographical heritage dating from the middle Ages. The alleys, squares, courtyards and old houses compose a great scenario, but above all it is the three majestic medieval castles (UNESCO World Heritage) with their rugged splendour and incomparable strength that tell of centuries of history. In complete harmony with this patrimony are the modern details of the celebrated Ticino architecture school, which create a living bond between past, present and future.

This sun-kissed valley has a truly genuine character and remains unchanged and unspoilt from season to season.

Every evening local and American specialties are served in the rounded shape restaurant. Not to be missed are the subtropical garden with pool and bar. At the Hotel Vezia unique and creative events and banquets for up to 100 people are organized. Wi-Fi and parking are always included free of charge. The hotel is conveniently located at only 3 km from the centre of Lugano (with a bus stop in front of the hotel). Charming walking trails and scenic mountain-bike or motorbike routes start directly from the hotel. Member of:

Meeting Rooms Lugano’s Palazzo dei Congressi is centrally positioned, right next to the splendid Parco Ciani and its homonymous villa, directly on the lake shore. The centre is located within a short distance of many hotels, services and attractions. A large amphitheatre, banquet/conference rooms, break-out rooms and a central exhibition area offer the ideal location for events of all kinds. One of the most appealing aspects of the convention centre is its uncluttered hallways, wide stairways and outside terraces, spacious yet human in scale and ideal for networking. The historical Villa Ciani, connected to the convention centre, provides an exclusive venue available to rent for private events or as an extension of the Palazzo dei Congressi. Villa Ciani, one of the City’s most magnificent locations, overlooks the Ciani park and the lake and offers many fully air conditioned rooms on three levels with frescoed ceilings and wooden floors. An additional event location is available at the "Ex-Asilo Ciani".
