our region Port Macquarie is one of the most popular tourist destinations on the NSW coast. An area steeped in history, it was named by John Oxley in 1818 after Governor Macquarie. Oxley recommended the area to Governor Macquarie as a convict penal settlement. In April 1821 three ships arrived with 60 convicts and 40 soldiers of the 48th Regiment to start the settlement. Port Macquarie remained a convict town until 1847 but in 1830 it was opened to free settlers. Evidence of our convict past remain including the convict built St Thomas Church, the Well of the Female Factory in Munster Street (map ref. K8) and the Well of the 1840 gaol located within the HW Motel. In addition many headstones from this era can be found in the historic cemetery at the southern end of Horton Street (map ref. J9). Kooloonbung Creek Nature Park (entry through

4

the historic cemetery, map ref. J9) – covering 52 hectares, the Kooloonbung Creek Nature Park preserves an area of natural bushland with 3 kms of walking tracks and boardwalks where visitors can wander and enjoy the beauty of the area and its ecosystems. Historic Roto House was built in 1891 and belonged to the Flynn family. In the early 1980s it was restored by the National Parks and Wildlife Service and features furnishings and artefacts from the 19th Century. Pack a lunch and picnic in the pleasant surrounds of Macquarie Nature Reserve, or visit the nearby Koala Hospital. Open daily from 10am to 4.30am subject to volunteer availability. Phone 6584 2180 (map ref. L10). The Koala Hospital adjacent to Roto House is the world’s

Tacking Point Lighthouse

first hospital dedicated solely to the care and preservation of koalas. The Hospital has a treatment room, six intensive care units, a 24 hour rescue and treatment operation and multiple recovery yards. A good time to visit is during feeding at 3pm. (map ref. L10). Maritime Museum – Originally built as Pilot Cottages in 1896, they now house a wonderful collection of maritime material including superbly built scale models of a variety of vessels, charts, maps, paintings and an extensive collection of historical maritime photos. William Street. Open 7 days 10am – 4pm. Phone 6583 1866 (map ref. M8). Port Macquarie Historical Society and Museum is an award winning museum featuring themed displays from the first settlers right through to today – Open 9.30 am to 4.30pm Mon–Sat (minimal charges apply). 22 Clarence Street (map ref. K8). Phone 6583 1108. Historic Courthouse was designed by Colonial architect James Barnet and built in 1869 by local builders Butler and Bourne costing £1,091 and 9 shillings. It served the community for 117 years and was restored in 1993. This National Trust of Australia (NSW) classified building is open 10am to 3pm Mon to Sat. Corner of Clarence and Hay Streets (map ref. K8). Phone 6584 1818. St Thomas’s Anglican Church – Australia’s fifth oldest church is still in use. Built by convict labour between 1824 and 1828 the walls are constructed of one metre thick hand-made brick. It features an 1857 barrel organ that plays 33 hymns – the only one of its type in Australia. The Church is open for inspection on weekdays from 9.30am to 12 noon, and 2pm to 4pm (map ref. K8). Tacking Point was named by Matthew Flinders in July 1802. The lighthouse is the third oldest in the country and has recently been restored. It was built in 1879 to warn ships of the rocks near the shore and was converted to automatic operation in 1919. Apart from the interest of the lighthouse itself, Tacking Point with its elevation above the surrounding coastline offers superb views to both the north and the south – be sure to look out for whales (map ref. Q18).

Lake Cathie

our region Lake Cathie (pronounced cat-eye) – Located midway between Port Macquarie and Laurieton, Lake Cathie is centered on a large toddler friendly saltwater lake and is perfect for young families. With fishing and swimming, picnic tables, BBQ facilities and a playground, it is an ideal spot to spend a day. Cathie Beach adjoins the Lake and is a popular swimming beach. There is also a wonderful walking track that takes in both the lake and the ocean. Bonny Hills south of Lake Cathie, boasts some of the best coastal views in the region. It is home to the stunning Rainbow Beach, a huge expanse of white sand that goes on forever. The beach is patrolled during summer and has a fantastic picnic and BBQ area with playground equipment. Not only popular for swimming, Rainbow Beach is also an excellent surfing beach for both body boarders and surfers. Camden Haven is the collective name given for the communities scattered along the Camden Haven River including Laurieton, North Haven and Dunbogan at the mouth of the river; stretching to Kew, Kendall, Lorne and Comboyne further inland. Small fishing villages bustling with cafes and shopping combined with local charm, the Camden Haven is a wonderful place for a day or a week. It is all about water activities and the lake and river provide plenty of opportunity for fishing, boating and walking along the foreshores. Enjoy the peace and quiet on this magnificent river or grab your fishing rod and throw a line in, you’ll certainly attract the attention of some quizzical pelicans! North Brother Mountain overlooks Laurieton, North Haven and Dunbogan villages. At the summit (490 metres), in Dooragan National Park, is the North Brother Lookout (accessible via sealed roads), which is not to be missed offering a superb view over the coastline, the lakes and the mouth of the Camden Haven River. It is one of Australia’s most impressive coastal panoramas. The area is characterised by large stands of rainforest which is rich in native fauna and flora.Take a picnic as they have excellent facilities. Three walks of varying length and difficulty are available if you are feeling energetic. The mountain supports a wide range of vegetation

6

communities, including some of the best examples of old growth blackbutt forest in NSW and pockets of sub-tropical rainforest that provide habitat for gliders, bats and koalas. Dunbogan, just past Laurieton, is a little piece of paradise. Beautiful beaches and river fishing make it a unique location catering for everyone. Home of Kattang Nature Reserve, which boasts the most magnificent views. Enjoy wildlife and native flowers on one of the 2 walking tracks (see page 29). Pilots Beach is a fantastic beach for the kids, as it is naturally protected. They also have excellent BBQ facilities and playground area with showers to rinse off. Crowdy Bay National Park - Take the road from Laurieton and head south and you will enter the northern section of Crowdy Bay National Park. This area of parkland was first sighted by Captain Cook in 1770. He saw Aborigines standing on what is now known as Diamond Head and named the promontory Indian Head. In more recent times a man named Ernie Metcalf lived on the headland. He was the subject of ‘The Man on the Headland’ written by Kylie Tennant. He built a hut for Tennant who subsequently gifted it to the park. It was restored in 1980 and is now one of the park’s attractions. Diamond Head itself is quite striking. It rises 113 metres and is edged by the wetlands and heathlands of the coastal plain. The park is ideal for bushwalking, birdwatching, fishing (from the rock platforms you can catch groper, bream, tailor and drummer) and swimming. The Camden Haven continues to the west, with Kew, Kendall, Lorne and beyond. In the rolling hills and quaint towns you’ll find arts, crafts and various local delicacies that this region has to offer. We have prepared some wonderful day trips on page 22 so you can truly appreciate this breathtaking area.

Comboyne Hills

our region Wauchope - (pronounced war-hope) 20 minutes west of Port Macquarie. Surrounded by Australia’s most extensive blackbutt forest, it was here in the mid 1800s that pioneers made the town famous as a timber town. In honour of that history, Timbertown, one of Australia’s best heritage parks, has re-created an entire village depicting the way the early pioneers lived. Set amongst 87 acres of natural forest, Timbertown is an entire village re-created to demonstrate the struggles and achievements of our pioneers. Take a ride on a horse drawn carriage and view the bullock show – it’s a great day out. Open daily 9.30am to 3.30pm (4.30pm during school holidays). The Hastings Farmers Markets are held at the Wauchope Showground on the 4th Saturday of the month. A fantastic opportunity to taste some of the region’s fresh and tasty produce that’s grown right here in the Greater Port Macquarie region - fresh fruit and vegetables, fish, chicken, gourmet jams and preserves, cheeses, macadamia nuts, fresh homemade breads and lots more. Hinterland - To the west of Port Macquarie is true paradise with breathtaking scenery of rolling hills and lush rainforest. Not only is the Hinterland a truly spectacular sight-seeing experience, it is popular with bush-walkers, four-wheel drive enthusiasts or those just keen to explore. Take time to discover this region with a day trip or two. Perhaps stay overnight in one of the many Cottages or B&B’s scattered along the way. We have outlined some trails you may like to try, or you may prefer to make up your own, but whatever you do don’t miss this vast area of natural beauty. Bellrowan Valley Horseriding has some wonderful trails if you want to take in the breathtaking views on horseback – located in

10

Beechwood, just north of Wauchope. Comboyne is a tranquil place of rolling green pastures, forests, streams and waterfalls. Here you’ll find the Boorganna Nature Reserve, a large remnant of the forest that once covered the whole plateau. There is a fantastic 2.7km walking track that starts at the picnic area where you can see many differing bird species and lush rainforest plants - allow a few hours for this. Ellenborough Falls is an amazing sight as water plunges into a gorge 200m below. There is a viewing platform and a timber walkway for those who would like to walk to the bottom of the falls. Whilst it’s only a 25km drive from Comboyne, the road is mostly unsealed so allow around 45 minutes for the drive. Don’t let this put you off however as it is definitely worth the trip. They have 2 walks, one 500m to the lower falls, and another 700m to the knoll plus there is a Kiosk and picnic facilities which makes it a great lunchtime stop. Lorne and Kendall, whilst a part of the Camden Haven, also forms part of the Hinterland. Kendall ‘The Poets Village’ is a quiet village with a population of 250 people located just off the Pacific Highway, at Kew. Its vibrancy, diversity and charm fuel Kendall’s community spirit and have earned it a reputation as a great place to live and visit. Named after the Australian poet Henry Kendall it is a growing community, with its famous golf course, craft and antique stores as well as numerous other tourist attractions.

coastal walks

Putting our best foot forward - one of Port Macquarie’s newest tourist attractions, the Coastal Walk, follows one of the most dramatic and inspiring coastlines in NSW. The 9km easy-grade walk takes in beaches, headlands, historic sites, rainforests and fantastic views. Starting at Westport Park in town, all the way to Tacking Point Lighthouse, the walk takes approx 3.5 hours one way and is being hailed as the new ‘must-do’ activity in the region. Nearly 3km runs along the coastal boundary of beautiful Sea Acres Nature Reserve. The Coastal Walk hugs the coastline and features boardwalks, steps for easier access to the headlands, viewing platforms and picnic shelters. Opportunities abound for viewing dolphins plus there is a variety of birdlife and the annual whale migration from May to November. The project is the result of a partnership between Port Macquarie Hastings Council and the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS), with both organisations contributing infrastructure along the walk. The Council and the NPWS are installing quality signage on topics such as local history, whale watching and underwater ecology, maps make it easy for locals and visitors to enjoy and use the walk. Visitors can also visit Sea Acres Rainforest Centre just up from Shelly Beach, to experience a walk through some glorious coastal rainforest along the timber boardwalk.

20

The Coastal Walk is mostly easy grade and can be divided into four sections: • Westport Park to Town Bch - 2 km • Town Bch to Flynns Bch - 2.2 km • Flynns Bch to Shelly Bch - 2.2 km • Shelly Bch to Tacking Point Lighthouse - 2.7 km A few tips will help to make your walk more enjoyable for you and others: • Keep to the track and keep away from cliff edges. • Beware of traffic when close to the road. • Please take rubbish with you or use bins provided. • Dogs are not allowed in the Sea Acres section anywhere south of Shelly Beach.

Activities are only limited by your imagination, with a great choice of professional river and ocean cruise specialists where you can take in the scenery, watch the dolphins play or be taken to where the fish are guaranteed to be biting. Avid anglers will be in paradise as they hunt their favourite species from one of the many fishing spots along the rivers, lakes, beaches, and break walls. Local fishing and boating centres scattered around the area are always happy to give a few tips about what’s biting, as well as being able to cater to all your bait and tackle needs. Greater Port Macquarie is a haven for whale watchers. Every year between May and November approximately 6,000 humpback whales leave their summer feeding grounds in Antarctica and make their way northwards to tropical waters and their winter feeding and breeding grounds before making their return trip.

This migration takes them past the headlands and coastline around Greater Port Macquarie, often within only a kilometre or two of

coastal vantage points, and the glare of the water doesn’t make sighting the tell-tale “blow” too difficult to see. Early morning can also be a good time as the “blow” is often highlighted by the backlight of the morning sun. Common antics from the humpbacks include waving their extraordinary long pectoral fins, rolling forward to dive until on the tail sucks out of the water, blowing clouds of vapour into the air when breathing, rolling their body and splashing as their pectoral fin smacks the surface of the water, and most spectacularly launching themselves out of the water in a motion called breaching. Should you have your own boat and plan to motor out to look at the whales yourself, please be aware that whales are highly sensitive to engine noise. Any harassment may severely stress the whales, which in turn can lead to accidents for both humans and whales alike. This is especially important should a mother be with her calf, which may be either resting or suckling. You should remain 100 metres away from whales at all times and no closer than 300 metres of mothers with calves. A great way to experience these magnificent creatures is on a whale watching cruise. Departing frequently during the season, these cruises will almost guarantee you an up front and personal
