OUR UNIQUE HERITAGE

or more than 40,000 years the Birpai people have been the original inhabitants and occupants of the Greater Port Macquarie region. Relying on the land and waterways to sustain themselves, the Birpai people made temporary huts along the river and around the lakes allowing them to follow the seasonal food trail. The region’s richly diverse landscapes together with the subtropical climate ensured that the community thrived in harmony with the environment for many thousands of years prior to the arrival of Europeans. Today, with its own unique heritage, PORT MACQUARIE is one of the most popular tourist destinations on the NSW Coast. Discovered by John Oxley in 1818 and named after the Governor of NSW, Lachlan Macquarie, our first visitors were convicts sent to the Port Macquarie penal settlement in 1821 to serve time for secondary offences. The town was built by those convicts and overseen by military officers of the 48th Regiment. Port Macquarie was opened up to free settlers from 1830 and remained a convict town until 1847. Evidence of our convict past can be viewed at various locations including the convict built St Thomas’ Church, the well of the Female Factory in Munster Street ( Map ref K8), the well of the 1840 gaol located within the HW Boutique 4 discover Summer 2016/17

Hotel and at the Port Macquarie Museum. The historic cemetery at the southern end of Horton Street ( Map ref J9) is home to the remains of many of our early settlers including convicts, military officers and free settlers. John that it inspired him to write the song “Good Bye Blinky Bill”, which became enormously popular throughout Australia. He very generously donated the proceeds from his song to the Koala Preservation Society. John raised a considerable amount of money that enabled the Koala Hospital to build a new “John Williamson Wing” which houses their intensive care unit.

THE KOALA HOSPITAL adjacent to Roto House is the world’s first hospital dedicated solely to the care and preservation of koalas. Founded by Jean and Max Starr in 1973, the hospital is entirely self-funded from donations, bequests, adoptions and their kiosk. It is managed by the charitable organisation, the Koala Preservation Society of Australia Inc., only has three paid positions, 170 volunteers and hosts one overseas volunteer for one month every month - a position that is in very high demand. Facilities include a treatment room, eight internal intensive care units, six outdoor intensive care units and 33 rehabilitation yards. This unique Hospital not only treats between 250-300 sick and/or injured koalas each year, it successfully rehabilitates and returns about 80% of their admissions to the wild. Primary causes of illness and injuries to koalas are Chlamyidiosis (a virulent bacterial infection that causes ‘wet bottom’ and conjunctivitis which, if detected in time, can be treated by antibiotics); motor vehicle accidents, dog attacks and the dreaded bushfires, which not only maim and kill koalas but lead to the destruction of their rapidly diminishing habitat and food trees. Of the 900 species of eucalypt trees that grow in Australia, only 60 of them are ‘food trees’ so koalas’ habitat is determined by the availability of these trees.

Visitors to the Koala Hospital can view the treatment room through a large window and see the koalas being treated. You can also observe the recovery, care and feeding of the koalas. The Koala Hospital is open daily from 8am until 4.30pm with feeding times at 8am and 3pm. Walk & Talk tours are conducted at 3pm daily where the koalas will be fed and the volunteer

artists, are sponsored by local businesses and community organizations. The Hello Koalas Sculpture Trail is owned and managed by Arts and Health Australia Pty Ltd. Australian Music legend John Williamson is also passionate about saving koalas. During a visit to the Koala Hospital, he witnessed an emergency rescue call come in. The entire experience was so impressive for 8 discover Summer 2016/17

DID YOU KNOW? that John Williamson is also an accomplished visual artist as well as a musician? You can see his design on one of the three Hello Koala sculptures at the Koala Hospital. pened in early 2014, multi-award winning Ocean Club Resort in Lake Cathie is one of the state’s fastest growing over 50s communities. The resort boasts impressive state of-the-art facilities, but the main reason for its popularity is the young age of the homeowners - averaging in the mid 60s. Retired from work, but not from life! The world class community and recreation facilities reflect their lifestyle needs. In addition to the full size bowling green,

homeowners enjoy the 25m heated pool, the tennis court, gym, recreation centre and onsite caravan parking. For many people, treatment is not only physically and emotionally difficult but can also create financial stress. Painted by local artists Mel Casey and Adam Murray, the mural is an interactive art space designed to encourage people to take a photo, share on social media, and to think about the whole picture next time you see or speak to someone receiving cancer treatment. This beautiful artwork can be found on Sunset Parade (Map ref K8), next to Arthouse Industries. Share and tag your photos #ifweallhadwings and if you would like to donate, purchase merchandise or attend an event, find them on Facebook and Instagram.

A place not to be missed while visiting the Hastings region (see map page 61 & 62). > CRYSTALLINE GALLERY – Rod Page has been supplying galleries throughout Australia for the last 33 years and now his studio is open to the public. Rod’s unique pieces look like they are made of

sapphires or diamonds. There are vases, platters, lamps, water filters as well as tiles and vanity basins in a wide variety of colours. See how the clay is transformed into an elegant piece of art. > LONG POINT VINEYARD AND ART GALLERY – Art and wine form the perfect couple... Avid anglers will be in paradise as they hunt their favourite species from one of the many fishing spots along the rivers, lakes, beaches, and breakwalls. Local fishing and boating centres scattered around the area are always happy to give a few tips about what’s biting, as well as being able to cater to all your bait and tackle needs. Each year between May and November, the Port Macquarie

coastal region is a haven for whale watching. After a full summer of feeding in Antarctica, approximately 16,000 humpback whales migrate north to sub-tropical waters where they mate and give birth before making their return trip south. A great way to experience these magnificent creatures is on a whale watching cruise. Departing frequently during the season, these cruises will almost guarantee you an upfront and personal experience in a safe and comfortable environment. Beach fishing is very popular with locals and tourists alike. Rocky Beach, Lighthouse Beach, Rainbow Beach and Grants Beach are all popular spots. If you want somewhere to get your 4WD dirty, try North Beach, Lighthouse Beach, Rainbow Beach, Grants Beach or Dunbogan Beach – all of which have a 4WD entrance. A licence is required for recreational fishing (service.nsw.gov.au) and you also require a permit to drive on the approved 4WD beaches. Beach driving permits are available from the Visitor Information Centre located at the Glasshouse, Cnr of Clarence & Hay Streets Map ref K8. Locally sourced Oysters will be a highlight on the BILLS Fishhouse menu

T H E M E N U . Together, Smith and Harris have curated a stellar menu that boasts subtle Mediterranean hints and an east meets west influence. The obvious focus has been staying true to the fresh, seasonal ingredients and the brand's roots of uncomplicated eating. Everything has been designed to be shared among groups - big or small. Only sustainably sourced seafood makes it into BILLS Fishhouse - because as we’ve said before, this isn’t your standard fish 'n chips shop. Expect to see Oysters, Blue Swimmer Crabs and clams from the local Mid North Coast region, along with lush, quality produce from Near River Farms. Wood-smoked and chargrilled are their secret weapons in the kitchen when it comes to creating the flavours being served up in this house. Pleasant surprises like Hand Made Sausage using hormone free pork has got us salivating, along with their take on Ceviche, dubbed Chopped & Chunky Salmon - the raw dish comes served with quail egg and preserved carrots. It’s this progressive and innovative approach to simple food that makes BILLS Fishhouse a highly

anticipated addition to the local restaurant landscape. Oh, did we mention the Seafood Share? Forget your preconceived notions of seafood platters, these guys have an insta-worthy offering loaded with abundant, fresh seafood that only dreams are made of - perfect for a sunny afternoon paired with a crisp Rosé! The surprises certainly aren’t confined to the kitchen; the bar packs just as much punch. Jugs of Pimms, Aperol Spritz and expertly paired wines (they are even experimenting with a smoked cocktail - stay tuned) are ready to satisfy your thirst. Harris has been clever when it comes to the beverage offerings, having consulted Sommeliers to nail this element. The fact they are continuing service from lunch through to dinner - yes people of Port Macquarie, this is not a misprint - BILLS Fishhouse will trade from lunch right through to dinner and serve food, beverages and coffee the whole time. The whole time - means there really has never been a better excuse to catch up with friends over an afternoon Negroni or two. Ok, maybe three.

T H E H O O K . Built flushly into a feature wall amongst the exposed timber palings, black gloss subway tiles and polished concrete interior, you will find The Fish Box. Practical in concept and visually a feast - this glass ice box will house the daily catches on offer. Accompanied by a Market Board with all the relevant info, you will be able to hand select your Snapper of choice, or maybe you're more of a crustacean connoisseur? Whatever your taste, The Fish Box will be loaded with the good stuff and will see you facing off with your seafood and selecting sides before tucking in. Port Macquarie is as synonymous with coastal culture as thongs and Vegemite, and we predict this place will soon be infused into that subculture. So, if you’ve got a hankering for something from under the sea or are simply just a fan of good honest food, there’s no "de-baiting"; BILLS Fishhouse is quite the catch.

The Rebellion People have come to be confused about what the rebellion really is. The rebellion is not in the clothes you wear, it is not in the appearance you portray, it is not in the music you listen to. The rebellion is the process of forgetting everything you know and asking the questions to what everything is again, where you are now questioning everything for you to decide, rewiring your every circuit by erasing everything you know or thought you knew and were taught. The rebellion is tough. The rebellion is not always pretty. The rebellion is first in the mind and the rebel is in the act. — rex x.
