OUR REGION

OUR UNIQUE HERITAGE. For more than 40,000 years the Birpai people have been the original inhabitants and occupants of the Greater Port Macquarie region. Relying on the land and waterways to sustain themselves, the Birpai people made temporary huts along the river and around the lakes allowing them to follow the seasonal food trail. The region’s richly diverse landscapes together with the subtropical climate ensured that the community thrived in harmony with the environment for many thousands of years prior to the arrival of Europeans. Today, with its own unique heritage, Port Macquarie is one of the most popular tourist destinations on the NSW coast, and also one of the fastest growing regions in NSW. Discovered by John Oxley in 1818 and named after the Governor of NSW, Lachlan Macquarie, our first visitors were convicts sent to the Port Macquarie penal settlement in 1821 to serve time for secondary offences. The town was built by those convicts and overseen by military officers of the 48th Regiment. Port Macquarie was opened up to free settlers from 1830 and remained a convict town until 1847. Evidence of our convict past can be viewed at various locations including the convict built St Thomas’ Church, the well of the Female Factory in Munster Street ( Map ref K8), the well of the 1840 gaol located within the Ibis Styles Hotel and at the Port Macquarie Museum. The historic cemetery at the southern end of Horton Street ( Map ref J9) is home to the remains of many of our early settlers including convicts, military officers and free settlers. Over the next four years Port Macquarie and the Hastings region will reach a number of milestones in their European discovery and settlement. 2018 marks two hundred years since Surveyor General John Oxley’s journey of discovery during which he and his party travelled to the place he named Port Macquarie. A number of commemorative events and activities are planned throughout the Hastings region across this year. 4

Koalas make great Mums!

The gestation period is approximately 35 days and at birth, the unfurred, blind ‘pinkie’ crawls unaided from the birth canal, up through the fur and into the vertical pouch and attaches to one of the two teats. Once their eyes are opened, the joeys detach from the teat but remain in the pouch for around four to five months, growing and becoming fully furred. Anywhere from 250 grams weight onwards, the joey will become active, occasionally popping its head out and sniffing the air. Around this time the joey begins to stimulate its mother’s cloaca to produce a greenish substance called ‘pap’. This is passed down from the caecum, a specialised section of the intestinal tract where fermentation of the leaf occurs, for the joeys to eat. The ‘pap’ contains vital micro organisms (bacteria) that inoculate the joey’s gut system to enable them to digest eucalypt leaf. Without pap, a joey cannot eat eucalypt leaf and will not survive. From around six months of age, the joey will start emerging onto the mother's belly and by eight months the joey becomes a ‘back young’, staying on or near the mother. By 12 months, the koala is usually weaned. Female koalas are excellent mothers, and are highly protective of their young.

Port can proudly claim that is has become a food-force to be reckoned with, with many restaurants and cafes truly embracing the locavore tenet. From a sublime dining experience at our one-hatted restaurant to a relaxed coffee, juice or smoothie by the beach, Port Macquarie has it all!

Town Green + Town Square As the central hub in town, the Town Green is a popular place to enjoy the waterfront. Works have recently been carried out to give the area a face-lift to enhance the community experience. Sunsets are simply not to be missed from here! Nearby at Town Square, works have also taken shape to provide a more vibrant area with al fresco dining and space to host markets, events and festivals. Kooloonbung Creek Nature Park (Entry through the historic cemetery) – covering 52 hectares, the Kooloonbung Creek Nature Park preserves an area of natural bushland with 3kms of walking tracks, boardwalks, and a new 600 metre cycleway. Here visitors can wander and enjoy the beauty of the area and its eco-systems. Map ref J9 Settlement Point Reserve Located just five minutes drive from Port Macquarie Town Centre it is a great spot to take in the Hastings River. Facilities include picnic tables, BBQs, a playground, lots of parking and a nearby cafe. You can even take the short ferry ride over to the North Shore from here. Dolphins are frequently spotted along the shore as they frolic in the shallows of the river. Be sure to look out for them! Map ref H3 Tacking Point Named by Matthew Flinders in July 1802. The lighthouse is the third oldest in the country and has recently been restored. It was built in 1879 to warn ships of the rocks near the shore and was converted to automatic operation in 1919. Apart from the interest of the lighthouse itself, Tacking Point with its elevation above the surrounding coastline offers superb views to both the north and the south – in October and November be sure to look out for whales. Hinterland To the west of Port Macquarie is true paradise, with breathtaking scenery of rolling hills and lush rainforest. The Hinterland is a truly spectacular sight and is popular with bush walkers, four-wheel drive enthusiasts or those just keen to explore. Take time to discover this region with a day trip or two. Perhaps stay overnight in one of the many cottages or B&B’s scattered along the way. We have outlined some trails you may like to try, or you may prefer to make up your own, but whatever you do don’t miss this vast area of natural beauty. Bellrowan Valley Horseriding has some wonderful trails if you want to take in the breathtaking views on horseback – located in Beechwood, just north of Wauchope. Comboyne A tranquil place of rolling green pastures, forests, streams and waterfalls located about a 1 hour drive from Port Macquarie. Here you’ll find the Boorganna Nature Reserve, a large remnant of the forest that once covered the whole plateau. There is a fantastic 2.7km walking track that starts at the picnic area where you can see many differing bird species and lush rainforest plants. Allow a few hours for this. While in Comboyne, you must drive a further 25kms to visit Ellenborough Falls in the Manning Valley - a truly amazing sight as water plunges into a gorge 200m below. There is a viewing platform and a timber walkway for those who would like to walk to the bottom of the falls. Whilst the road is mostly unsealed, it is definitely worth the trip (allow around 45 minutes for the drive from Comboyne). They have two walks, one 500m to the lower falls, and another 700m to the knoll plus there is a Kiosk and picnic facilities which makes it a great lunchtime stop.

summer 2018/19

Step back in time with a day out at Timbertown, one of Australia’s best heritage theme parks, just 20 minutes west of Port Macquarie. Set amongst 87 acres of beautiful natural Blackbutt forest, Timbertown is an entire living, working recreation of a Timber Getters Village from 1880 – 1930. Family fun is plentiful with loads of activities including gold panning, miniature train rides, steam train rides, horse and carriage rides, and even whip cracking lessons. Immerse yourself in this era by observing the blacksmith and timber craftsmen at work, or by watching a bullock team. Visit the steam sawmill and also over 40 village buildings including an art and craft cottage, winery and a general store with its must visit Ice Creamery! So grab the family and enjoy a great value day out experiencing and learning first hand about Timbertown’s history. Open every day of the NSW public school holidays from 9.30am until 4pm (closed Tues and Wed at other times). Façade Escape Room Port’s first escape room is opening this December! What is an escape room? It’s like a live-action Cluedo game that uses elements from experiences like scavenger hunts and interactive theatre. In 2007, Japan opened the first escape room and since then the trend has exploded! Today there are over 8000 escape rooms worldwide, and it’s still growing! Australia is also catching on with almost 100 escape rooms. Popular for groups of friends, workplace team building, and families, most games suit ages "tweens" and up - younger children (less than 10 years) may find them a bit challenging. All escape rooms use "exciting" stories but some are a little scary, so parents should enquire and make the judgement for their own child. Port Macquarie's Façade Escape Room uses tension but there are no monsters or jump scares. There is no special knowledge required - all the necessary information is contained in the game. So if you enjoy mysteries, puzzles, riddles, clues and exciting stories, you must try Façade Escape Room!

There is an easy 30 minute walk through lush rainforest, or try the Top Track which is a moderate 1 hour walk. You can return to the summit or continue on the Laurieton Track, which is a demanding 2 hour walk. Make sure to have a vehicle waiting at the other end. OUR INDULGENCES

MICHAEL BURKHARDT AND HIS FAMILY HAVE SPENT THE LAST SIX YEARS CREATING AN AUTHENTIC FOOD EXPERIENCE FOCUSED ON SUSTAINABLE GROWING METHODS AND PURELY ORGANIC INGREDIENTS WHERE POSSIBLE.

BURKHARDT'S ORGANIC BAKERY Walking down Short Street in Port Macquarie, you’ll be greeted with a number of ways to inspire your inner foodie. It’s quickly becoming a speciality food strip where you can find anything from those hard to source Asian ingredients to some of the tastiest bread and desserts that you’ve ever tried. There’s one little shop with a modest façade, a warm and welcoming counter and normally a line-up of people excited to get the day’s fresh treats. From first glance, this place has a lot more going on than most people would expect. Behind the doors of this German inspired Bakery, which has been a local business on the scene for the last 12 years, Michael Burkhardt and his family have spent the last six years creating an authentic Food Experience focused on “real” food, sustainable methods and utilising as many purely Organic ingredients as possible. The term “Organic”, for this German Pastry Chef/Baker, is definitely more than just a current day marketing term - it’s a way of growing, sourcing and baking on a day-to-day basis.

62

summer 2018/19

Michael puts real passion and dedication into his work to ensure his loyal following of customers are getting a genuine paddock to plate experience. The best example of this next level of baking, is the herd of Heritage Breed Scottish Highland Cattle he and his family breed and raise locally on their farm. The challenge being, these cattle need a minimum of 3 years before they reach a maturity level for use. The result is a healthier and more flavoursome meat, well worth the time and energy required in caring for the herd. The meat from this particular breed is 50% lower in cholesterol and has significantly higher iron levels than that of common breeds and is used in his sensational meat pie and sausage roll range, of which there are Gluten Free options as well. The dedication doesn’t stop there - Michael is also fully committed to sustainable practices and chooses to use an Organically grown flour. He also uses “Salt Of The Earth” hand harvested sea salt and fully filtered, fluoride-free water in all of his products. With this kind of passion for their products, it is no wonder that Michael’s daughter, Ashleigh, has joined in the food side of things by preparing her own line of Vegan Raw Slices, which are refined sugar free, dairy free and gluten free. Her desserts are packed with nutritious ingredients and flavour. The only way to believe it is to try some for yourself! So the next time you’re strolling down Short Street and notice the boutique food stores that may inspire your cooking, be sure to pop into Burkhardt’s Organic Bakery and taste the difference of what experience and a passion for healthy and sustainable food is like.
