our unique heritage
Photo courtesy of the Port Macquarie Historical Society, with permission from John Thomas Dick, eldest grandson of Thomas Dick, and the Birpai Local Aboriginal Land Council
For more than 40,000 years the Birpai people have been the original inhabitants and occupants of the Greater Port Macquarie region. Relying on the land and waterways to sustain themselves, the Birpai people made temporary huts along the river and around the lakes allowing them to follow the seasonal food trail. The region’s richly diverse landscapes together with the subtropical climate ensured that the community thrived in harmony with the environment for many thousands of years prior to the arrival of Europeans. Today, with its own unique heritage, Port Macquarie is one of the most popular tourist destinations on the NSW Coast. Discovered by John Oxley in 1818 and named after the Governor of NSW, Lachlan Macquarie, our first visitors were convicts sent to the Port Macquarie penal settlement in 1821 to serve time for secondary offences. The town was built by those convicts and overseen by military officers of the 48th Regiment. Port Macquarie was opened up to free settlers from 1830 and remained a convict town until 1847. Evidence of our convict past can be viewed at various locations including the convict built St Thomas’ Church, the well of the Female Factory in Munster Street ( Map ref K8), the well of the 1840 gaol located within the HW Boutique Hotel and at the Port Macquarie Museum. The historic cemetery at the southern end of Horton Street ( Map ref J9) is home to the remains of many of our early settlers including convicts, military officers and free settlers. Port Macquarie Museum is an award winning museum featuring themed displays from the first settlers right through to today. Located in Port Macquarie’s CBD, it is one of the few surviving early commercial and residential buildings in Port Macquarie and is listed on the NSW State Heritage Register. From 1910-1920, Thomas Dick captured the lives of a small number of Birpai community members, as seen in the above photo (believed to be taken along the Macquarie coastline). Thomas Dick’s grandfather had settled in Port Macquarie in 1841 after migrating from England. Thomas remained in the area all his life and his family still live in the area today. Thomas was an oyster farmer and amateur scientist with a keen interest in natural history, in local history, and in the culture of the region’s Aboriginals. Thomas Dick’s photography provides a magnificent visual record of Aboriginal life in the Hastings district. With special thanks to John Thomas Dick (eldest grandson) and the Birpai Local Aboriginal Land Council for permission to use the above photograph.

our koalas Port Macquarie is the place to celebrate one of Australia’s most iconic animals the koala. Here you can not only get up close and personal with our furry friends at Billabong Zoo (see page 21), you can also visit the world’s first koala hospital, or take the Hello Koalas Sculpture Trail to see over 50 beautiful koala sculptures. The Koala Hospital adjacent to Roto House is the world’s first hospital dedicated solely to the care and preservation of koalas. Founded by Jean and Max Starr in 1973, the hospital is entirely self-funded from donations, bequests, adoptions and their kiosk. It is managed by the charitable organisation, the Koala Preservation Society of Australia Inc., only has three paid positions, 170 volunteers and hosts one overseas volunteer for one month every month - a position that is in very high demand. Facilities include a treatment room, eight internal intensive care units, six outdoor intensive care units and 33 rehabilitation yards. This unique Hospital not only treats between 250-300 sick and/or injured koalas each year, it successfully rehabilitates and returns about 80% of their admissions to the wild.
HOWARD
WATONGA WONDER
Australian Music legend John Williamson is also passionate about saving koalas. John has been a patron of the Koala Preservation Society of Australia ever since he met one of their founders, the late Jean Starr, in the early eighties. During a visit to the Koala Hospital, he witnessed an emergency rescue call come in. The entire experience was so impressive for John that it inspired him to write the song “Good Bye Blinky Bill”, which became enormously popular throughout Australia. He very generously donated the proceeds from his song to the Koala Preservation Society. John raised a considerable amount of money that enabled the Koala Hospital to build a new “John Williamson Wing” which houses their intensive care unit. Visitors to the Koala Hospital can view the treatment room through a large window and see the koalas being treated. You can also observe the recovery, care and feeding of the koalas. The Koala Hospital is open daily from 8am until 4.30pm with feeding times at 8am and 3pm. Walk & Talk tours are conducted at 3pm daily where the koalas will be fed and the volunteer will explain how the koalas came into their care. Admission is free and donations are welcome - you can even adopt a koala! Located at Lord St and Roto Place, Port Macquarie, 6584 1522, www. koalahospital.org.au Map ref L10
Primary causes of illness and injuries to koalas are Chlamyidiosis (a virulent bacterial infection that causes ‘wet bottom’ and conjunctivitis which, if detected in time, can be treated by antibiotics); motor vehicle accidents, dog attacks and the dreaded bushfires, which not only maim SCULPTURES LOCATED AT THE KOALA HOSPITAL and kill koalas but lead to the destruction of their rapidly diminishing habitat and food trees. Of the 900 species of eucalypt trees that grow in Australia, only 60 of them are ‘food trees’ so koalas’ habitat is determined by the availability of these trees. BAGO BLOSSOM

Take one or more days saying “Hello” to all these uniquely lovable Koalas and post your photos on Facebook, Instagram and Trip Advisor (#hellokoalas) for everyone to enjoy. Look out for the in the magazine to locate the Hello Koalas sculptures and see map pages 53-57 for the Hello Koalas Sculpture Trail – a Gold Winner in the 2015 North Coast Tourism Awards and Bronze Winner in the 2015 NSW State Tourism Awards. DID YOU KNOW that John Williamson is also an accomplished visual artist as well as a musician? You can see his design on one of the three Hello Koala sculptures at the Koala Hospital. According to John, the “stars” in his design are a reminder of Max and Jean Starr and the name of the sculpture - “Sunshine” - reflects the warmth and joy this couple brought to so many during their lives, and especially to our precious Koalas.

Map ref H3 Lake Innes Ruins - Located in Lake Innes Nature Reserve, these ruins represent a significant part of Australia’s colonial heritage. The grand home, Lake Innes House was built in the1830s and 1840s and was home to the colonial entrepreneur Major Archibald Innes and his wife Margaret Macleay. This historic site is managed by the National Parks and Wildlife Service and public access to the site across private property is via guided tour only. Tacking Point was named by Matthew Flinders in July 1802. The lighthouse is the third oldest in the country and has recently been restored. It was built in 1879 to warn ships of the rocks near the shore and was converted to automatic operation in 1919. Apart from the interest of the lighthouse itself, Tacking Point with its elevation above the surrounding coastline offers superb views to both the north and the south – in October and November be sure to look out for whales. Map ref Q18 Wauchope (pronounced war-hope) - 20 minutes west of Port Macquarie. Surrounded by Australia’s most extensive blackbutt forest, it was here in the mid 1800s that pioneers made the town famous as a timber town. Today Wauchope is the gateway to the hinterland and has many unique businesses and boutique shops with friendly old fashioned service. As an RV Friendly town, Wauchope makes for a great stop or a day out. If you’d like to taste some of the region’s fresh and tasty produce, head to the Wauchope Farmers’ Markets at the Wauchope Showground held every 4th Saturday of the month. Hinterland - To the west of Port Macquarie is true paradise, with breathtaking scenery of rolling hills and lush rainforest. The Hinterland is a truly spectacular sight and is popular with bush walkers, fourwheel drive enthusiasts or those just keen to explore. Take time to discover this region with a day trip or two. Perhaps stay overnight in one of the many cottages or B&B’s scattered along the way. We have outlined some trails you may like to try, or you may prefer to make up your own, but whatever you do don’t miss this vast area of natural beauty. trails if you want to take in the breathtaking views on horseback – located in Beechwood, just north of Wauchope. Abundance Lifestyle & Garden Centre and Café is ideally situated just a three minute country drive off both the Pacific and Oxley Highways at Sancrox. Located at the Vanderley Production Nursery site, this beautiful complex is a popular destination for locals and tourists alike. The onsite wholesale production nursery ensures a good supply of locally and highly professionally grown and conditioned plants to the Abundance Garden Centre - a bonus for gardeners and landscapers in the Hastings area and beyond. An excellent selection of pots, water features and garden art complement the green-life. John van der Ley and his team of horticulturalists offer expert advice and friendly service for all gardening requirements. Comboyne is a tranquil place of rolling green pastures, forests, streams and waterfalls. Here you’ll find the Boorganna Nature Reserve, a large remnant of the forest that once covered the whole plateau. There is a fantastic 2.7km walking track that starts at the picnic area where you can see many differing bird species and lush rainforest plants. Allow a few hours for this. While in Comboyne, you must drive a further 25kms to visit Ellenborough Falls in the Manning Valley - a truly amazing sight as water plunges into a gorge 200m below. There is a viewing platform and a timber walkway for those who would like to walk to the bottom of the falls. Whilst the road is mostly unsealed, it is definitely worth the trip (allow around 45 minutes for the drive). They have two walks, one 500m to the lower falls, and another 700m to the knoll plus there is a Kiosk and picnic facilities which makes it a great lunchtime stop.
Lorne and Kendall, whilst a part of the Camden Haven, also forms part of the Hinterland. Kendall ‘The Poets Village’ - is a quiet village with a population of 250 people located just off the Pacific Highway, at Kew. Its vibrancy, diversity and charm fuel Kendall’s community spirit and have earned it a reputation as a great place to live and visit. Named after the Australian poet Henry Kendall it is a growing community, with its famous golf course, craft and antique stores as well as numerous other tourist attractions. Life is short - Lick the Bowl!! Better still, head to Miss Nellie’s for a homemade treat and see why this hip, hinterland cafe is one of the most popular hidden treasures of the Hastings! Nestled in the village of Kendall, where the beaches meet the lush scenic valleys of the Camden Haven, Miss Nellie’s is a modern-yet-classic haven for all. Defying the country cafe trend, the decor and vibe is modern with a retro twist, and guests are greeted with a friendly smile and welcoming atmosphere. Enjoy a relaxing coffee, homemade cake or Devonshire tea with Miss Nellie’s jam, or bring family and friends to indulge in the all-day lunch menu (including a generous Gluten-free offering). While you’re there, why not take home some local goodies and gourmet gifts. Lake Cathie (pronounced cat-eye) – Located midway between Port Macquarie and Laurieton, Lake Cathie is centered on a large toddler-friendly saltwater lake and is perfect for young families. With fishing and swimming, picnic tables, BBQ facilities and a playground, it is an ideal spot to spend a day. Cathie Beach adjoins the Lake and is a popular swimming beach. It is one of Australia’s most impressive coastal panoramas. The area is characterised by large stands of rainforest which are rich in native fauna and flora.Take a picnic as they have excellent facilities. Three walks of varying length and difficulty are available if you are feeling energetic. The mountain supports a wide range of vegetation communities, including some of the best examples of old growth blackbutt forest in NSW and pockets of sub-tropical rainforest that provide habitat for gliders, bats and koalas.

Crowdy Bay National Park - Take the road from Laurieton and head south and you will enter the northern section of Crowdy Bay National Park. This area of parkland was first sighted by Captain Cook in 1770. He saw Aborigines standing on what is now known as Diamond Head and named the promontory Indian Head. In more recent times a man named Ernie Metcalf lived on the headland. He was the subject of ‘The Man on the Headland’ written by Kylie Tennant. He built a hut for Tennant who subsequently gifted it to the park. It was restored in 1980 and is now one of the park’s attractions. Diamond Head itself is quite striking. It rises 113 metres and is edged by the wetlands and heathlands of the coastal plain. The park is ideal for bushwalking, birdwatching, fishing (from the rock platforms you can catch groper, bream, tailor and drummer) and swimming.

The Greater Port Macquarie region offers you a choice of 15 beautiful beaches stretching from Port Macquarie through to Dunbogan. For surfing, the best spots are Town, Flynns, Lighthouse, Rainbow and North Haven beaches. The Breakwall at Town Beach works best with swell from the south through to the north-east. The Middle has some powerful lefts and is for the experienced surfer only, while Flagstaff is the protected southern headland of Town Beach. At Flynns Beach, waves can be found with swells from the south to east with offshore north-west winds through to south-east winds. Lighthouse Beach has a protected northern corner that handles north to north-east swell. Further south, Cathie is an open beach, which can offer powerful waves with south to east swell. Rainbow Beach is a protected southern headland with a right point break and beach breaks. Grants Headland picks up the smallest of swells and is best in the north-east swell with west to northeast winds. North Haven (Grants Beach) offers beach breaks with the best waves south to east swell, and works best with west to south-east winds. The bar can hand out some large waves but tidal flow from the river affects the wave quality. (With thanks to Port Macquarie Surf School)
Port Macquarie Surf School - Learning to surf is fun and easy, especially at Port Macquarie Surf School where they have lessons daily to suit all their customers’ needs. Humpback Whale offshore by Jodie Lowe
whale watching Greater Port Macquarie is an absolute haven for whale watching. A great way to experience these magnificent creatures is on a whale watching cruise. Departing frequently during the season, these cruises will almost guarantee you an up front and personal experience in a safe and comfortable environment. River system to Limeburners Creek National Park and the Pelican Island wetlands. Established 32 years ago, their boats also travel the path of the old cream boats west to Rawdon Island, Sancrox, Lilybank and Wauchope, and north to the magnificent Everglades via the Hastings, Maria and Wilson rivers. Their two riverboats are also ideal for private charters – for parties (BYO), tour groups, and functions for all occasions. Stopovers can be arranged at a variety of waterfront restaurants and venues for lunches and dinners. Cruise Adventures are also Port’s longest established and most experienced whale watchers, having done over 11,000 cruises on their quiet whale friendly boats, with numerous close encounters with the majestic Humpback whales (see full ad inside front cover). Get out on the Hastings River in Port Macquarie on one of three fantastic boats operated by The Cruise Terminal. Port Venture Cruises supply a number of different experiences including a historic river cruise or a fun boom net ride at twilight, or the ‘must do’ lunch BBQ cruise. Their boat, the River Princess, is an allweather spacious 15m catamaran with two levels providing a variety of viewing aspects. Or go back in time and board the Chinese Junk which is an altogether different experience - iconic to Port Macquarie, she is a vintage authentic Chinese junk and an extremely comfortable boat. Be lulled on one of their two hour trips and enjoy either a yummy morning tea scenic cruise, a tasty fish & chip lunch cruise or a spectacular sunset cruise. Take in the sights of the picturesque river while listening to the informative commentary, and be sure to keep an eye out for dolphins, which are spotted on most trips. New to the Cruise Terminal is The Ocean Adventure 1 whale watching tours, one and a half hour trips to see the majestic mammals. With experienced friendly and knowledgeable staff, they pride themselves on giving their customers a memorable occasion (see full ad page 6).

family fun & adventure
There are so many things to see and do in the Greater Port Macquarie region. Almost every activity you can think of is catered for with family fun for all ages, as well as adventure and thrills for the more daring. Billabong Koala and Wildlife Park is delighted to announce the much anticipated arrival of their two cheetah brothers, Warrior and Vongani (the name means “to give thanks”). These brothers have travelled all the way from Cheetah Outreach in Cape Town, South Africa and they’ve come with an important message. The cheetah is well known for being the fastest land mammal, capable of reaching speeds of 100 km per hour – but they are losing their greatest race of all – the race of survival. Since the turn of the century their population numbers have dramatically declined from 100,000 animals down to as few as 10,000 today. They are rapidly losing their habitat and natural food sources and this leads to regular conflict with farmers as the cheetahs are forced to hunt domestic prey. Warrior and Vongani are here to raise awareness and support for the conservation efforts being undertaken by Cheetah Outreach and their livestock guardian program. A special thank you to their friends at Mogo Zoo who quarantined the cheetahs in Australia. Billabong Zoo is a great day out for the whole family, from their monster croc Shrek to their mischievous meerkats. They have animal presentations happening almost every half hour that are sure to keep the kids on their toes. For that truly unforgettable experience why not book one of their personal animal encounters – feed a snow leopard, koala, meerkat or red panda, perhaps cuddle a penguin or a python, full details on their website. Hungry? Why not grab a bite to eat at the zoo café, try their Chef’s porterhouse steak, homemade scones, biscuits and burgers, or a fresh ground coffee. Don’t forget their huge gift shop for that special memento, and remember, Billabong Zoo is the place for you! The Bago Maze (the largest hedge maze in NSW) is situated within the grounds of the picturesque Bago Vineyards, Wauchope. Open daily from 9.30am, the Bago Maze consists of some 2,000 metres of pathways including a sunken pathway, elevated walkway, bridges, observation towers plus a number of items to keep you entertained throughout the journey. Inspired by the surrounding bushland and vineyard, the maze incorporates a myriad of symbolic imagery within its pathways and hedges. The journey through the maze takes from 20 minutes to an hour to complete however, many hours of fun can be had making for an entertaining day. Adults $10, Children $7 (under 5 FREE and must be accompanied by an adult. Phone 6585 7099 (see ad back cover).

Dooragan National Park on North Brother Mountain overlooks Queens Lake and Camden Haven. Viewing platforms at the summit offer the most breath-taking views and are a must to visit. There is an easy 30 minute walk through lush rainforest, or try the Top Track which is a moderate 1 hour walk. You can return to the summit or continue on the Laurieton Track, which is a demanding 2 hour walk. Make sure to have a vehicle waiting at the other end. Map page 53 Kattang Nature Reserve is accessed through Laurieton and across the Dunbogan bridge. The main feature is the majestic Perpendicular Point with its spectacular vertical cliffs plummeting 40 metres to the sea below. The reserve is surrounded by rock platforms, with the Camden River estuary to the north. The Flower Bowl Circuit (2km) is an easy walk with stunning coastal views or try the Perpendicular Point Walk (3.6km return) with panoramic views. Map page 53 Crowdy Bay National Park – heading south through Camden Haven and past the Dunbogan turn off, you’ll find Crowdy Bay’s long sweeping beaches, dramatic headland, extensive wetlands, rainforest pockets and untouched coastal land featuring beautiful wildflower displays. There are three camping areas around Diamond Head and several day use areas along the coast. Map page 53 Boorganna Nature Reserve is a significant remnant of the extensive rainforest that once covered the Comboyne Plateau. The reserve protects 396 hectares of diverse vegetation ranging from Eucalypt forest to subtropical rainforest. Stroll the 2.7km walk that starts at the picnic area and descends through the tranquil rainforest to Rawson Falls. The return trip (uphill) takes about 2 hours at a steady pace. Bring your bird book, as the reserve is very popular for bird watching (best observed during the early hours of the day). Map page 53 Burrawan State Forest - located just 10 kilometres south of Wauchope you will find the largest Red Bloodwood tree in the Southern Hemisphere. Tourism award-winning ‘Old Bottlebutt’ is unique in shape with its flared ‘butt’ with a girth of more than 16 metres. Mekong Restaurant, On the river - Imagine you’re looking out over the Mekong River in NE Thailand with the misty mountains of Laos looming as dark shadows in the background. The aromas floating from the open kitchen continue this journey. The fresh taste of the traditional Thai-Lao cuisine says something very clearly; ‘you have arrived’. Sourcing fresh ingredients is essential when creating dishes if they are to have authenticity. The Mekong’s first priority is sourcing the best local produce such as whole snapper, prawns, fish, oysters and crabs and that is just the seafood. The menu is wide and varied to suit a range of tastes for those who like it hot and spicy or just fresh and flavorsome. Are you ready for a real taste sensation journey? The concept behind the new Latin Loafer in Port Macquarie is a fusion of Latin American and Spanish food, wine and cocktails.
