Chalk it up to New Technology: Learning the Game of Life
(L-R) Learning Leader Cecilia Buckman engages a Possibilities student with a hands-on teaching tool known as a SMART Board™.
Learning Leader Cecilia Buckman has been teaching individuals with learning challenges for nearly a decade, including two years with Discover Goodwill’s Possibilities program. Participants eagerly assemble in Cecilia’s classroom daily to learn life skills and accelerate their success using a revolutionary, hands-on teaching tool known as a SMART Board™.
eyes light up when describing her students’ favorite motivational activities, which range from playing music to participating in match games to learning money management.
SMART Board™ is an interactive, electronic whiteboard that incorporates a computer, projector and speakers. The computer screen is projected onto the whiteboard, which serves as a large touchscreen. Participants can use “digital” ink pens to write or draw on the board. Those who cannot hold a pen can use their hands or arms to create a makeshift mouse that interacts with the board.
One of Possibilities’ wheelchair-bound participants uses the board as a form of artistic expression. With Cecilia’s instruction and encouragement, the student has learned to re-create the visual experience of playing music on the SMART board™ using his favorite music. “I want to change people’s lives through music and poems,” he said.
This cutting-edge, multi-media technology helps instructors adapt lessons to address the various learning styles and abilities of each participant, whether visual, auditory or by touch. Cecilia’s

“The SMART Board™ brings excitement and intense engagement to participants’ studies!” Cecilia enthusiastically summarized. “They can’t wait to enter the classroom to learn and communicate; it gives them a true sense of pride in their accomplishments.”
Annual Picnic Highlights Getting to know your coworkers and their families outside of work reveals them in a wonderful new light! Discover Goodwill hosted several events for employees this summer to celebrate our hard work and dedication to helping people achieve independence.
Nothing but Monkey Business Rain clouds parted just in time for Discover Goodwill employees’ and their families’ arrival at the third annual, Fun-Committeesponsored picnic at the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo. Fantastic city views graced the skyline as families wandered through the park capturing wild moments with their favorite animals. After venturing through exotic habitats, families strapped on their feedbags for a delicious meal while taking in the laughter of children riding an old-fashioned carousel nearby. Special thanks to our Fun Committee members, who worked tirelessly to organize this event and perfect all arrangements for the much-anticipated day.
Possibilities: 80’s Flashback Leg warmers, huge hair and “totally awesome” dance moves pumped up the volume in the town square as Possibilities celebrated its 1980’s-themed picnic. Possibilities program participants, staff and Watch the video online at volunteers enjoyed DiscoverMyGoodwill.org

performances by a local dance group, fun-filled activities and reconnecting with participants’ family and friends.
Janitorial: Goodbye Timecards, Hello Fun! Smiling faces and laughter echoed from the forested hills of the U.S. Air Force Academy (USAFA) during the Discover Goodwill and WAXIE co-sponsored annual picnic celebration hosted at FAMCAMP. Over two hundred contract employees, community partners and their families rallied together in honor of Discover Goodwill’s 20th anniversary providing cleaning services for the USAFA dormitories and base buildings. The festivities included special honors presented to nearly 20 employees in recognition of their outstanding job performances. (L-R) Possibilities King and Queen.
