TAI CHI VILLAGE Issue 14 18th July 2020
DISCOVER TAI CHI
Welcome to the Tai Chi Village Hello everyone We have more good news to share with you! We will start a new indoor tai chi for health and wellness class in Keighley. Based at AW School of Dance in the historic Dalton Mills complex. We opened our very first class here in September 2016. Some of you will remember our classes there on a Monday evening. This time the class will run from 1:30 pm to 2:30 pm every Monday. You'll find ample parking on site if you drive, a bus stop right outside, and Keighley train station just five minutes walk away. We've created a short video showing you the way into the beautiful studio space and what you can expect: Click the link to watch the video, it will open in a fresh tab or window: https://www.wevideo.com/view/1771631783 You'll see we have taken care to ensure you can enjoy this class following the most recent government guidance on safe distancing and hygiene procedures. At this point in time we have to cap the class to 12 participants only. Like all our classes, be they online via Zoom or face to face with Helen and myself we ask you to book using our online booking service: https://goteamup.com/p/3515195-discover-tai-chi/
Many of you have already signed up to our booking service. We must use a booking service to comply with guidelines. Helen and I will happily assist you if you have any questions about the process. Many of our other venues remain closed until September. As instructors we have to keep in mind guidance to refrain from travelling to multiple indoor venues to reduce the risk of carrying Covid-19 from one location to another. As you know doubt can appreciate we've spent a lot of time sifting through government documents in a daily changing landscape of conflicting advice. Thankfully, it's a step in the right direction. As we move forward we will continue to offer a you a blended mix of ways for you to enjoy our tai chi lessons and programmes: 1. On demand via our learning site at: www.patreon.com/discovertaichi 2. Tai Chi from the Tea House Facebook Live Stream - every Tuesday 3. Online Zoom classes every Wednesday 4. Face to face instruction outdoors at Cliffe Castle and now indoors at AW School of Dance We hope this inspires you to join us. Phil & Helen

❝To love a thing means wanting it to live… Analects of Confucius - Chapter 7
Confucius used the concept of Rén as the pillar of his value system in China formed during the Warring States period - 475–221 BC. Collated later in his famous series of chapters called the Analects during the Han Dynasty - 206 BC–220 AD. When asked to describe the quality of Rén Confucius used the above quote using the analogy of a parent's love for their child. Two characters make up the logogram for Rén - 人 (man, human being, a person) and 二 (the number (two). Interestingly, the character for Rén was written as丨二 representing yin/yang. The vertical line represents yang qualities (male, sky, light, day, the sun, heat), the two horizontal lines represent yin qualities (female, earth, shade, night, the moon, cold).
Together the two characters that make up 仁 Rén represent the essence of all things on the earth and beneath the sky. From a Taoist perspective Rén represents our relationship with all around us. Akin to the modern concepts of human beings as just one part of the larger interconnected environment in which we are embedded. Rén reminds us that we all have our place in the world and that we should actively remember that we share our place in the world with others - the animate and the inanimate. As part of that active meditation Rén reminds us that our place in the world is one based on reciprocity and mutual respect. The principles of Rén find themselves embodied in our practice of tai chi. As we slowly and mindfully move in time and space we have breathing space to reflect on our place in the world and how we occupy it with others. Image by Victoria Palacios on Unsplash
