Come dicevano i Queen, “I want to ride my bicycle, I want to ride my bike, I want to ride it where I like”, a Trieste puoi farlo grazie a BITS, il servizio di Bike Sharing in funzione in città! 12 ciclostazioni: dal lungomare di Barcola, un luogo frequentato tutto l’anno, non solo d’estate, alla Stazione Rogers in via Ottaviano Augusto, sulle Rive di Trieste, passando per altri punti nevralgici cittadini, come viale XX Settembre, un lungo viale alberato dove si trovano il Teatro Rossetti e molti bar e gelaterie, piazza Hortis, al limite della Città Vecchia, ma vicino alla vivace via Torino, alla Biblioteca civica, al Civico Museo Revoltella e Galleria d’Arte Moderna e molte altre ancora che ti permettono di muoverti da un posto all’altro della città secondo le tue esigenze.

BITS è il servizio voluto e realizzato dal Comune di Trieste, proprietario delle ciclostazioni e delle biciclette, ed è attualmente gestito da Trieste Trasporti, l’azienda di trasporto pubblico locale che, ai bus e ai collegamenti marittimi già offerti, ha aggiunto la proposta lenta e sostenibile della mobilità a due ruote, subito ben apprezzata, soprattutto dai giovani visto che il 70% degli utenti è under 30! BicinCittà è la piattaforma tecnologica dove iscriversi per usufruirne.

All’arrivo a Trieste, di fronte alla stazione ferroviaria di piazza della Libertà, potrai salire in sella ad una bici e da lì raggiungere i luoghi di interesse o semplicemente scoprire la città da un’altra prospettiva. Tramite l’App disponibile sia su iOs che su Android è possibile verificare in tempo reale le biciclette disponibili: un centinaio di bici di cui il 10% elettriche, opportunità da non sottovalutare in una città non del tutto pianeggiante ma caratterizzata da saliscendi e talvolta salite impegnative.

Il servizio si adatta a tutti i fruitori: a chi lo usa sistematicamente, offrendo un abbonamento annuale, a chi lo usa occasionalmente, offrendo una ricaricabile, a chi a Trieste è solo di passaggio, offrendo un noleggio della durata di 24 ore.

Alcune curiosità? Le tratte più utilizzate nella recente stagione estiva sono state dalla stazione ferroviaria di piazza della Libertà o da piazza Oberdan a Barcola e la tratta che porta dalla stazione ferroviaria alla stazione marittima, sulle rive triestine. Sicuramente un bel mezzo alternativo per raggiungere il lungomare triestino, particolarmente frequentato durante la stagione estiva per un tuffo in compagnia degli amici per una bella nuotata rigenerante o per raggiungere il centro città ammirando il mare. In the words of Queen, “I want to ride my bicycle, I want to ride my bike, I want to ride it where I like”: in Trieste you can, thanks to BITS, the city’s bicycle-sharing service! 12 docking stations: Barcola’s seafront, a popular location all year round; Stazione Rogers in Via Ottaviano Augusto; Trieste’s Rive [i.e. seafront]; and numerous landmarks and hotspots in the city centre, such as Viale XX Settembre, the tree-lined pedestrian boulevard with its various bars, ice-cream parlours, and Teatro Rossetti; Piazza Hortis, at the edge of Città Vecchia [lit. old town], with the library Biblioteca Civica, Civico Museo Revoltella, and Trieste’s Modern Art Gallery, overlooking lively Via Torino; and many more, all strategically placed in order to provide visitors with the opportunity of moving around freely and conveniently.

BITS is organised and promoted by the Municipality of Trieste, which owns both docking stations and bicycles; service management is entrusted to Trieste Trasporti, local public transport agency, already in charge of the city’s sea- and bus lines. Two-wheel city transport, promoting slow mobility and eco-sustainability, was received with enthusiasm from the very beginning, especially by younger users under-30 cyclists account for 70% of BITS’ user base. Online access to BITS is provided by IT platform BicinCittà [lit. bike in the city].

Visitors can mount their BITS bike immediately upon arrival, as there is a docking station right in front of Trieste’s railway station, in Piazza della Libertà. Saddle up and reach your desired landmark, or simply explore the city from a fresh perspective! BITS mobile app, available for both iOs and Android devices, users can verify in real time the number of available bikes among the one hundred at their disposal, 10 % of which are e-bikes a useful addition, considering Trieste’s numerous uphills and downhills, and a few really steep slopes.

BITS caters to every user’s needs: regular customers can buy annual travelcards, while casual users may opt for a prepaid pass; finally, one-time users and/or tourists that are just passing through Trieste, are offered a 24-hour rental formula.

Interesting facts: last summer the most popular routes were city centre-to-Barcola, either from the railway station (Piazza della Libertà) or from Piazza Oberdan, and railway station-to-stazione marittima, on the Rive triestine [seafront]. A bike ride on these routes is most certainly an interesting alternative to public transport for visitors wishing to reach the lungomare, for a refreshing swim with friends, or to ride back into town enjoying a spectacular view of the sea.
