SQUISHY, SLIMY, STINKY FUN! SPRING 2016 Animal Grossology Focuses on The Science Behind Slime, Dung Balls and Other Gross Animal Behavior Through April 17 The Animal Grossology Traveling Exhibit, based on a popular series of books by science teacher Sylvia Branzei, is an educational experience grounded in the

theory that the best way to get children interested in science is to present it in terms they find most appealing. Let’s face it, topics such as slime, vomit, dookies and other gross stuff are completely fascinating for your average six to 14-year-old.

By physically stepping into the exhibition, these subjects have become an interactive, larger-than-life biology lesson that harnesses children’s natural curiosity about themselves and teaches them about how animals function. Following are some fun facts associated with many of the entertaining and educational displays featured in Animal Grossology! • Animals have red, blue, yellow or clear blood. Blood is very nutritious as it contains a lot of protein. • A cow has one stomach but it is in four parts. A cow’s stomach is equal in size to nine human stomachs. • Some frogs belch their babies into the world. • Ticks often relocate by hitching a ride on a migrating bird. • A Hagfish may be the slimiest creature on earth. • Tapeworms grow inside the stomach and can grow up to 60 feet-long. • Dung balls are more than meals for the beetles; they also serve as nurseries for new beetles. • Animals use smells for recognition,

Summer Camp DISCOVERY Children’s Museum style, encourages PLAY which is a normal developmental process. Play at camp is a critical stage of learning; it’s a learning process that is experiential and active. Our Summer Camps are full of fun experiences exploring Arts and Sciences (STEM – science, technology, engineering and math). defense and attraction. • Slime is essential to some animals, providing important functions such as facilitating motion, aiding in digestion and for defense. • Blood slurpers transmit infectious diseases. • Sea stars eat by shoving their stomachs out, digests the food and sucking their stomach back in. • You can identify an animal by its “dookie” sizes, content and shape. • Houseflies taste food using their feet and legs!

The exhibition was created and produced by Advanced Exhibits, a division of Advanced Animations LLC, in collaboration with Sylvia Branzei, the author of the GROSSOLOGY series of books. The books are published through Price Stern Sloan, a member of Penguin (USA) Inc.

NanoDays - The Biggest Event for the Smallest Science Saturday, April 2 Our always popular April event, NanoDays, is back by popular demand! NanoDays at DISCOVERY Children’s Museum is a day filled with fun and interactive experiences all centered around the world of very, very small science. NanoDays is a part of a nationwide festival of educational programs about nanoscale science, technology, and engineering. NanoDays is a community-based event involving science museums, research centers and universities across the country, organized by the Nanoscale Informal Science Education Network (NISE Net). The museum is proud to host its fifth annual NanoDays to provide this fun day of scientific discovery. Women in Engineering, National Securities Technologies and the Nanotechnology Center will be participating in NanoDays, too. For more information and educational resources, visit www.WhatIsNano.org.

AWARENESS MONTH - APRIL 2016

APRIL – An Eclectic Mix – Celebrating National Autism Awareness Month and Exploring New Technology!

This month’s celebration was established to highlight the growing need for concern and awareness about autism. The Autism Society has been celebrating National Autism Awareness Month since the 1970s. The United States recognizes April as a special opportunity to educate the public about autism and issues within the autism community. Autism spectrum disorder is a complex developmental disability that typically appears during the first three years of life and affects a person’s ability to communicate and interact with others. Autism is defined by a certain set of behaviors and is a “spectrum disorder” that affects individuals differently and to varying degrees.

DISCOVERY Children’s Museum Launches Vegas Has a Heart to Raise Funds for Free Memberships for Families in Need

DISCOVERY Children’s Museum knows our community has a big heart! Not only is Las Vegas a generous and giving community, it is also committed to improving access to high quality educational opportunities. The goal of Vegas Has A Heart campaign is to provide 1,000 families in need with a free, one-year membership to DISCOVERY Children’s Museum. The museum will collaborate with Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada, CORE Academy powered by The Rogers Foundation and Boys Town Nevada in identifying families that receive the one-year membership. Additionally, those families will receive free bus ride passes donated by the Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada. Media Partners include KVVU Fox 5 and Beasley Broadcasting. Gang violence, broken families, absent parents, domestic violence, underemployment – they are very real facts of life for many families in our community. These families depend on social service and nonprofit organizations for support in life’s most basic needs…shelter, safety, nutrition, education and healthcare. “As one of the few cultural centers for children in Las Vegas, we have the opportunity to make a significant impact on families in need of a community safety net,” states Tifferney White, DISCOVERY Children’s Museum President & CEO. “We understand life’s basic needs like shelter and food need to be met first. We also understand a safe space for play and family time is invaluable to a family in distress and can pave the way for more positive outcomes – especially for children.” Located in a City of Las Vegas Redevelopment Zone, the museum’s immediate service area contains one of the highest concentrations of families with low incomes and the least access to a diversity of cultural experiences in all

of Southern Nevada. Central to the museum’s mission is providing access to children and families from economically and culturally diverse backgrounds. Research shows hands-on, interactive learning experiences and imaginative play in informal settings like museums help reinforce what children learn in school. DISCOVERY Children’s Museum helps children develop essential foundational skills and ignites a passion for discovery and lifelong learning in unique and innovative ways. However, for some Southern Nevada families, the price of admission or membership is a burden. That is why the museum created “Vegas Has a Heart,” a campaign to donate 1,000 free Family Memberships to families in need. “Working with our community partners who provide direct services and support to families living at or below the poverty line, these free memberships will substantially increase access to the hands-on learning and dynamic educational experiences”, states Diana Morgan, DISCOVERY Children’s Museum Director of Development. “But perhaps more critically, these free memberships will give vulnerable families a safe place to spend quality time together, to forget their hardships for a moment, to freely smile, laugh, create and play. Just $50 sponsors one-fourth of a Family membership; $200 sponsors an entire Family membership, giving a family in need this meaningful learning experience. Open your heart and make a contribution online today at DiscoveryKidsLV.org. Because Vegas does have a heart! Media Sponsors:

CALLING ALL ADULTS! There are a variety of ways for you to get involved as a volunteer at DISCOVERY Children’s Museum. We are looking for adults that want to work in a fun and energetic environment while giving back to the community and seeing the immediate impact of your generosity.

HAVE YOUR BIRTHDAY EXPERIENCE AT DISCOVERY.

Do you love working with children and families? Do you have a special talent (like sewing, love for arts, sciences, young minds and early learners, maintenance of exhibits, public speaking, etc.) that you would like to share? Whether you want to play in the galleries or assist behind the scenes in the office, we have a great opportunity for you to ignite a love of lifelong learning.

The most fun birthday location in town.
