SUMMER 2016

Fun Ways To Learn And Play At Adventures With Clifford The Big Red Dog Traveling Exhibit • Place an order on the order pads—what are the specials today? Pull some Clifford money out of your pocket and have a visitor ring you up on the cash register. • What’s cooking today? Use the pots and pans to make visitors’ favorites!

Adventures with Clifford The Big Red Dog offers numerous immersive “paws-on” adventures that reinforce “Clifford’s Big Ideas”— ten simple tangible life lessons designed to help young children navigate their world: Share, Play Fair, Have Respect, Work Together, Be Responsible, Be Truthful, Be Kind, Believe in Yourself, Be a Good Friend and Help Others. The exhibit runs through September 11, 2016 and is sure to delight young and old alike. Play with Clifford by visiting: Birdwell Island Ferry – Like tourists visiting Birdwell Island, visitors will start their journey to the exhibit aboard the Birdwell Island ferry, complete with seagull sounds and clanking ship bells. • Take the Captain’s seat and steer the ship’s wheel in the pilot’s house. (The pilot house is wheelchair accessible). Move the levers to hear the ferry engine roar! • Characters Victor and Pedro are on the ferry. • Check out the Birdwell Island Map—the land is completely surrounded by water: ISLAND! Move the peg people around to different sites…what happens next? Samuel’s Fish & Chips Shack – After being greeted by Samuel, visitors can sit out front and order food or head inside and step into the shoes of restaurant workers by cooking, cleaning, serving food, and restocking shelves.

Clifford The Big Red Dog – Clifford, his doghouse, and Emily Elizabeth all are right at home in this backyard! • Sit next to Emily Elizabeth on Clifford’s paw. Climb up and slide down Clifford’s tail. Do you have a dog? What do you think it’d be like to have a dog this big? Feeding time—use the conveyor belt to load up Clifford’s dog bowl with dog food! Clifford’s Doghouse – have some fun with the arts! • Use paper, crayons, pencils, tape and scissors to create a picture, invitation, or to write a letter. Tape up creations in the art gallery (back wall), become the mail carrier and deliver them around the island, or take them home! Emily Elizabeth’s Backyard Theatre – Mac welcomes visitors to the theatre where they become part of Clifford’s world by taking to the stage. A giant, interactive screen displays images from Clifford The Big Red Dog television show as a backdrop to the stage. • Choose a video clip, put on a costume, and step on stage! Or become an audience member – ask for an encore! Birdwell Island Library and the Norman Bridwell Art Retrospective – Ms. Lee welcomes visitors to the library and Jetta welcomes visitors to the Norman Bridwell Art Retrospective. • Share the love of reading on the bench. Push the button to check out the interview clips with Norman Bridwell and learn about the character and story development of Clifford over the past 40 years. Play Clifford’s Learning Adventures—a computer game!

WOW

, what a Spring we had with three fundraising events! All of

our events raise critical funds that allow us to carry on the mission of DISCOVERY Children’s Museum, to keep our exhibits and programs fresh and relevant, and to continue igniting sparks of discovery within our community’s youth. Our partners, sponsors, volunteers and donors make it all possible. We are truly grateful for all the support we receive, in all its forms! Here’s a quick look back:

Raising $6,380, Giving Back from the Chef’s Table at Tivoli Village was a beautiful community alfresco dinner. With dishes inspired by the Museum’s galleries, a bright moon in a clear sky, live music and 100 friends, it was an evening to remember! We welcomed 230 guests to our second annual Royal Tea, hosted by Mandarin Oriental Las Vegas. It was not only a royal occasion with a delectable gourmet tea service and royal court, it was also fun and inspiring with six art activities, love songs by Junior Committee members, interactive photo booth and a silent auction and raffle. This event raised over $31,000 to benefit our Arts & Humanities Program, a core element of the Museum’s educational foundation. 60 golfers braved the first heat wave of the year at the third annual DISCOVERY Golf Classic. Held at the stunning Cascata Golf Club in Boulder City, the event raised $38,000 to support our Admission Subsidy Program, which provides free or significantly reduced admission for Clark County School District elementary school field trips. Congratulations to the one Junior Golfer team for winning the tournament! e 2 e

Every season brings something new and exciting to the Museum. This Summer, we look forward to seeing many of our Members enjoying our nine galleries, daily and weekly programming and our new featured traveling exhibit, The Adventures of Clifford the Big Red Dog. Our members are a large part of our Museum family – it’s easy to become a Member and there are lots of great benefits, including unlimited admission to the Museum for a year! We are excited to celebrate our Members at the annual Members Ice Cream Social on July 29! Summer also marks the end of our fiscal year and the start of a new one. All of us at the Museum give our sincere thanks to every Member, donor, volunteer, visitor and friend who has contributed to the Museum in the last year. It is with your generosity that we can keep our programs, galleries and exhibits fresh and engaging. It is with your support that we can continue to forge new community partnerships to better serve our children and families. We hope you will continue your investment in DISCOVERY Children’s Museum this next year through renewed Membership, annual donations, attending our fundraising events, volunteering in a gallery, or sharing the Museum with someone new. It is with YOU that we inspire lifelong DISCOVERY – THANK YOU! A look ahead... what’s on deck for Fall? Only our biggest and fanciest fundraising event of the year! On October 15, 2016 we will honor Great Friend to Kids Award recipient, Wynn, at the Magic of DISCOVERY Gala at Wynn. Save the date! For more information about supporting the Museum, please contact Diana Morgan, Director of Development, at dmorgan@DiscoveryKidsLV.org or (702) 382-3445.

SEPTEMBER

Celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month!

Listen to the delightful story “The Kite Festival,” by author and illustrator Leyla Torres. Join in the fun and create your own kite in celebration of the special festival highlighted in the story.

Hispanic Heritage Month, whose roots go back to 1968, begins each year on September 15, the anniversary of independence of five Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. Mexico, Chile and Belize also celebrate their independence days during this period and Columbus Day (Día de la Raza) is October 12.

e September 17 – 23 e Honoring Margarita Engle

The term Hispanic or Latino, refers to Puerto Rican, South or Central American, or other Spanish culture or origin regardless of race. People of Spanish, Hispanic and/or Latino origin could identify themselves as Mexican, Mexican American, Chicano, Puerto Rican, Cuban, or “another Hispanic, Latino, or Spanish origin.” During National Hispanic Heritage Month (officially celebrated September 15 to October 15) we recognize the contributions made and the important presence of Hispanic and Latino Americans to the United States and celebrate the group’s heritage and culture. Hispanics have had a profound and positive influence on our country through their strong commitment to family, faith, hard work, and service. They have enhanced and shaped our national character with centuries-old traditions that reflect the multiethnic and multicultural customs of their community. Please join us at DISCOVERY Children’s Museum during the month of September as we celebrate this special annual tribute by learning and celebrating the generations of Hispanic Americans who have positively influenced and enriched our nation and society. You will find that we have chosen to celebrate in a variety of ways – by honoring authors and illustrators, architects and scientists of Hispanic descent. Alexample event” along with her mom Amanda Kouretas. The party was centered around Christmas and the holidays; the Kindle Fire Tablets collected would then be delivered to local hospital children’s cancer wards. “The party was a huge success,” stated the energetic Alexandra. “We collected 80 Kindle Fire Tablets. It brought me so much joy to see the smiles on the kid’s faces when we delivered them.” Her extracurricular activities include singing, dancing, painting, making videos on Musical.ly and participating in pageants. In fact, Kouretas holds the title of Little Miss United States and from her reign she recently donated $1000 to DISCOVERY Children’s Museum. A portion was raised online through the pageant’s People’s Choice online voting and then matched by Alexandra. She wanted to make a donation to DISCOVERY as it has played a big part in her life. Alexandra visited the former location often and loves the new location, especially The Summit and the Veterinarian Clinic in Eco City. In fact, she recently gave of her time by volunteering for the Royal Tea Jr. Committee along with some of her school friends. She donated her time by collecting Royal Tea raffle items, generating interest for the tea through social media and performing at the Royal Tea. “The museum is very important to the community”, said Alexandra. “Kids have fun while they are learning through play and it makes us really happy to be in such a positive environment.” As well as helping those in need, evidence shows getting children involved in philanthropy has positive effects for the children, their families and their community and Alexandra Kouretas is a shining example!
