Before the Košice Peace Marathon centenary race was underway on 1 October several other events had already been held in the build-up.

On 7 September a unique marathon exhibition, “A Century of the Marathon in Košice” opened at the East Slovak Museum in Košice. The exhibition features a rich archive and previously unexhibited items which will provide visitors with a fascinating insight into the different milestones of the oldest marathon in Europe.

Five days later, on 12 September, the centenary marathon was presented at the seat of the European Parliament in Strasbourg,

where a parallel and equally attractive exhibition emphasises important linkages to the wider context of events in Europe over the past century.

Strasbourg and Košice were connected in one more rather unique way: on 3 September a charity relay race started from Košice. Its 12 members covered the distance of 1291km to reach Strasbourg 9 days later and to demonstrate the messages of peace, friendship, tolerance and the need to help those in need.

The oficial opening of the 100th year of the marathon was on the eve of the race start. Concerts and musical performances were supple-

Ethiopia’s Tigist Assefa ran an astonishing time of 2:11:53 in the BMW Berlin Marathon on 24 September to improve the world record by over two minutes.

She broke Brigid Kosgei’s four-year old record of 2:14:04, set in Chicago in 2019. Assefa ran a strong but controlled race to halfway but then quickly distanced the rest of the ield. Running with her pacemaker and other male runners, she defended the title she won in Berlin last year with 2:15:37 and inished 5 minutes and 56 seconds ahead of second-placed Sheila Chepkirui.

mented by two commemorative events. First, the World Athletics Heritage Plaque was unveiled, awarded to the Košice Marathon for its contribution to the development of athletics. Quickly following this the Marathon lame was lit on Peace Marathon Square, very close to the iconic statue of the marathon runner.

After the race she credited the shoes she had worn as being the lightest she had ever run in and that they delivered an incredible experience. ‘New generation’ shoes with carbon-plate insertions, now commonplace among elite distance runners, may have reached a new stage of evolution in those worn by Assefa.

In the men’s race Eliud Kipchoge won for a record ifth time in 2:02:42. At halfway he was on schedule to beat his own world record of 2:01:09, set on the Berlin course last year, but his pace dropped when the pace-making inished after 30km.

Sea of Galilee Tiberias Marathon, Israel

A marathon at the centre of a huge local festival

Making waves

Long before running was such a widespread phenomenon the Tiberias Marathon was making waves along the shore of the Sea of Galilee.

Only a few hundred runners turned up at the start line for the inaugural race in 1977 – far from the thousands who now run the full marathon course. This race was the irst running event in Israel to include women. Zahava Shmueli, then 23 years old, took irst place in the women’s category with a time of 3:02:58 – just two weeks after she decided to run her irst ever marathon.

The Sea of Galilee Marathon is also designated as the Israeli marathon championship under the aegis of the Israel Athletics Association. Since the course is extremely lat and straight, with only one U-turn at the halfway mark, thousands of runners come to Tiberias from all over the country to set new personal records. Elite runners and guest runners from abroad also participate due to the mild winter weather in January.

The Israel Athletics Association managed the event for 38 years. “In 2015 we were contacted by the Tiberias Municipality to produce the following races,” recalls Ofer Padan, owner and

CEO of Marathon Israel. “We had created the irst Tel Aviv Marathon in 2009 and two years later my company brought the excitement to Israel’s capital by partnering with the municipality to produce the Jerusalem Marathon. The Mayor of Tiberias felt that the popularity of his city’s race was falling behind, and it needed to be rejuvenated to bring the growing running community back to the city.”

This is one of the core values of Marathon Israel: putting runners’ satisfaction irst and foremost in any event it produces. “To make the Tiberias Marathon attractive again, we turned the concept around so that the race would serve the hosting city, and not vice versa. We created a connection between the runners and the city; we made it a family-friendly event with attention to everyone; we added a Half-Marathon course and we made sure that local Tiberias runners were at the centre of our attention. We leveraged the race to serve the city’s hotels, restaurants and commerce, we included all the local school kids in the ‘family race’ and turned the Tiberias Marathon into a huge local festival. It was a great success.”

During the Covid-19 period the Tiberias Marathon suffered a setback but in 2023 the Tiberias municipality once again turned to Marathon Israel to manage the city’s major event. “Our main focus has always been the individual runner”, Padan says. “We’re going to turn the Tiberias Marathon into a celebration of wellbeing. This won’t just be a race where you come, run and go home. For 2024 we’re planning to bring back the ‘42 Party’ – celebrating full marathon runners who will be turning 42 during the coming year. In the last 52 years since the inaugural running of the Houston Marathon hundreds of thousands of athletes have run this increasingly popular race. Over 5500 runners have chosen to ‘Run For A Reason’ in the last ive years. Since the RFAR charity running program’s inception in 1995 over 36 million USD have been raised to beneit over 188 local charities.

Our January race-day temperature averages around 45ºF (7ºC) on the start line and 60F (15ºC) at the inish line. Runners encounter various iconic and artistic artefacts spread

throughout the courses. Running through the Kinder Land Bridge and Prairie Tunnels at mile 21 (34km) of the Chevron Houston Marathon is an awe-inspiring experience. This 100-acre space restores nearly 45 acres of native coastal prairie, re-introducing endangered native Gulf Coast prairie to the city. The race starts and inishes at the Yanmar Stadium Nagai, where numerous international races are hosted such as the 2007 World Athletics Championships. The course covers the most scenic and historic area of Osaka City. After leaving the Stadium runners make their way northward to Osaka Castle, one of Japan’s most famous and historic castles. Runners then pass under beautiful ginkgo trees along Midosuji

street, the main street of Osaka. The course is mostly lat, with little change in elevation, and protected from the wind by buildings and trees.

The Osaka Half Marathon, open to both genders, is held on the same day as the Osaka Women’s Marathon. Osaka Half Marathon is characterized by its adherence to strict time limits (2 hours 5 minutes) and its unique course layout which allows participants to cross paths with runners in the Osaka Women’s Marathon.

This makes the race more attractive for both sets of runners.

Tranquil race setting with the ocean as backdrop

Atlantic beaches, ishing villages

The 8th Montepio Cascais Half Marathon, organised by HMS Sports and Cascais City Council, will be a weekend full of determination, joy and passion for the race.

The Atlantic Ocean is the backdrop to the races. Cascais Bay accepts both elite and amateur athletes in the half marathon (on 4 February starting at 09:20), in the Cascais 10km (4 February, 09:00) and in the Cascais 5km (4 February, 09:20). There is also a children’s race (held on 3 February at 16.00). Since 2017 more than 25.500 runners have taken part in these events which offer a challenging weekend in a beautiful and tranquil setting.

The half marathon starts at Cascais Bay and offers the athletes an amazing race through the centre of town and along Guincho Road, with the Atlantic Ocean right alongside them. The race passes by important local monuments such as the Farol da Guia and the Forte São Jorge de Oitavos. The course has a maximum elevation of 54m and a total ascent of 130m. There will

be seven water stations along the route: six on the course (5km, 7.5km, 10km, 13km, 16km and 18km) and one at the inish line. Solid food is on offer at 13km and at the inish.

HMS Sports designed a long-sleeved technical jersey for the half marathon runners with female and male versions. The athletes will be able to choose the style and the size in the registration form, available at the oficial website. At the end of the race runners are awarded inisher medals and are handed a kit including food and drink.

For runners who think the half marathon distance is too much for them it’s possible to run the Cascais 10km or Cascais 5km in the centre of the town. All those who complete either of these distances receive a medal.

There will be children’s races for the little champions, born between 2011 and 2019. The kids run between 300m and 1000m according to their age and they will receive a gift after the inish line and a food kit.

In 2023, the organisation decided to introduce the oficial Montepio Cascais Half Marathon wind jacket. Those who signed up for the 21.1km, 10km or 5km races could choose a kit that included the registration and the wind jacket. The initiative will be repeated in 2024.

The Montepio Cascais Half Marathon has made great efforts to reduce the environmental impact of the event. The 3 Rs (reduce, recycle, reuse) policy meant that 100,000 fewer plastic bags were used than in 2018. The organisation also encourages the use of public transport and provides free parking facilities for bicycles.

Montepio Half Marathon of Cascais 2023 welcomed runners of 40 nationalities: 15% of registrations were foreigners. Cascais has excellent conditions for family tourism. A 30km seacoast includes beaches of wild nature and some urban ones. It combines the blue of the

Wuxi is a city in China stamped by the achievement of being the event at which the Chinese national marathon record was broken after having stood for 16 long years.

Wuxi Marathon provided the right time, the right place and the right people to bring to life the race theme “fast” in 2023.

The 2023 COLMO Wuxi Marathon was a World Athletics Gold Label Race and incorporated the Chinese National Marathon Championships. It acted as the marathon trials for both the World Athletics Championships in Budapest and the Asian Games in Hangzhou. The race boasted some of the fastest times ever run in China including both male and female national marathon records and 1261 people who ran under three hours.

Wuxi Marathon is traditionally held on the third weekend of March – coinciding with the best time to enjoy the cherry blossoms. One of the themes of the event is “people running in the picture” because in the “Jiangnan Pearl” (Wuxi), the course is so picturesque. In recent years the race has built a reputation for the quality of its medals. In 2018 (before covid) Wuxi Marathon’s medals were awarded third place at the AIMS World Congress. In 2023, the creative design of the medal named BLOSSOM is once again leading the way.

For someone running in the Wuxi Marathon the most impressive memory might be the typical scenic spots south of the Yangtze River in the irst half of the course. The mist rises off the Yuantouzhu peninsula of Lake Tai and early spring’s oriental cherry trees are in full bloom. The irst half of Wuxi Marathon’s course includes varied natural and cultural scenery testifying to the race theme. The scenery is so striking that

participants may slow their pace to appreciate it and save their efforts for later.

The second half of the course is for runners to enjoy the fun of running. After 20km the course becomes a “marathon highway”. This is the new city zone with wide, smooth roads and plentiful support points. Runners can freely speed up without concern for the road condition.

Wuxi Marathon’s course is styled as “irst narrow, then wide”. Beneitting from the course design, the race has become known as the fastest marathon in China, especially after the fast times in this year’s race. The race organisers

believe that more and more runners will target Wuxi as a place to break their personal bests.

Wuxi lies nestling between Changzhou and Suzhou on the banks of Taihu Lake. It was originally established in 202 BCE during the Han dynasty. Later, with the opening of China’s Grand Canal, the city became a hub for rice and textile exports. More recently Wuxi became known for its manufacturing industry but over the last 13 years the city has developed from a modern industrial and commercial base to an

Marathon movers Amman Int’l Marathon, 13 October 2023

The Amman Marathon was inaugurated in 2009 by King Abdullah of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. It was a race that had support at the highest level and was of international signiicance from the start. This was at a time when there were relatively few international road races in the region.

Lina El Kurd joined the Amman Marathon company in the year after it was founded as the Marketing and Media Manager. She had a background in business development, marketing and public relations with speciic experience in the banking and hospitality sectors and in event management..

She quickly assumed increasing responsibility within the company, serving as the Deputy General Manager of the Amman Marathon in 2011 and later becoming the General Manager.

In 2013 the Amman Marathon company merged with the Neurological Association which had been the organiser of the Dead Sea Ultra Marathon and the Red Sea Half Marathon. The result was the establishment of the Run Jordan Association for which Lina El Kurd took on the position of Deputy General Manager.

Run Jordan is a non-governmental organisation dedicated to the promotion of long distance competitive and leisure running throughout Jordanian society. A primary focus of Run Jordan is on the marathon as it constitutes an important part of the modern Olympic and Paralympic legacy. Other priorities include the organisation of competitive races at other distances: from 5km and 10km runs to half-marathon and ultramarathon events; and the promotion of leisure running in general. Run Jordan was established to restructure and broaden the scope of the Amman International Marathon to include running events and programmes in all parts of the country.

In co-operation with the Ministry of Education Run Jordan launched the Junior Running Programme in 2013, which gained widespread success. In 2015 Lina El Kurd started to organise races in governorates outside the capital such as Irbid, the second-city of Jordan and in Al Karak.

Lina El Kurd was appointed General Manager of

the Run Jordan Association in 2015 in recognition of her great experience in all aspects of organising running events. Under her leadership the Association achieved success in its irst year through the organisation of the Amman Marathon, the Dead Sea Ultra Marathon, and the Red Sea Half Marathon, all executed with a high level of professionalism.

Run Jordan collaborated with World Athletics and AIMS to provide the necessary training for the organising team with respect to route measurement, race organisation, and timing and results. A chip timing system was acquired in 2017 – the irst timing system in Jordan to be

owned by the organisers instead of rented from abroad.

The organisation liaises closely with the authorities through joint committees with representation from the police, the army, the Governor, the Mayor and the municipalities. Volunteers are vital to the operation. Running is promoted through partnership with the Ministry of Education and the universities. Students can count their participation as part of their community service working hours.

The work schedule is based on check lists and action plans. There is a race manual relating to each area of responsibility: race route logistics, timing system, volunteers, the celebration area. Run Jordan’s organisational structure speciies job descriptions for each role taken, whether by volunteers, part-timers or full-time employees.

Run Jordan events are charitable and part of the corporate social responsibility programme. The Association is a not-for-proit NGO. In 2016 Run Jordan launched the “Road Runners programme”, offering participants free weekly training with the RunJordan training groups.

Since 2016 a series of children’s races have been organised separately from the main events. These races included categories for children with special needs and are intended to provide a way of integrating them into the Run Jordan programme.

All the Association’s main races have highlighted professional athletes from special needs categories, such as wheelchair and visually impaired runners, supporting their participation in international races and helping them to obtain assistance from other bodies. Special categories of races were created with prizes and recognition for the competitors. This was followed by the introduction of partially blind and completely blind races in 2018.

In 2019 Lina El Kurd launched the Women’s Race, “Run for You” aiming to empower and support women in the local community and enhance their leadership roles in all ields.

The race encouraged women to prioritise their health, future, and dreams while becoming role models for society and its aspirations.

During the COVID-19 period Run Jordan developed a virtual running system to compete with global platforms. Many virtual races organised included “Run for Palestine,” “Run for Beirut,” “Amman Marathon,” “Red Sea Half Marathon,” and “Dead Sea Ultra Marathon.”

Lina El Kurd actively participated in several conferences focusing on sports tourism and race organisation, representing Jordan as a female leader in these events.

Following the irst event in 2019 the second women’s race took place, after the Covid pandemic had receded, on 14 July 2023 under the banner: “Championing Women’s Wellness and Empowerment in Sports”.

This reinvigorated event was held under the Patronage of Her Highness Princess Dana Firas, who said: “Sports are an effective tool for promoting community participation, empowering women and youth, investing in human health and safety, and achieving sustainable development goals. The women’s race is important in highlighting the need to prioritise women’s health and their active participation in sports activities and various community events to promote the principles of women’s empowerment, gender equality, and building self-conidence in girls.”

Lina El Kurd commented: “The Women’s Race serves as a platform for women of diverse backgrounds, ages, and abilities to come together in the pursuit of physical and mental well-being. Run Jordan irmly believes that physical activity is a fundamental aspect of a healthy and balanced lifestyle and, through this race, they inspire women across the country to prioritise their wellness and embrace the transformative power of sports. The event encourages women to challenge themselves, fostering self-conidence, solidarity, and personal growth.”

Prison break

Here I report on a race that is out of the ordinary: a 10km race in a prison

Ten years ago I heard that in the infamous prison in Berlin-Plötzensee* the prisoners are allowed to run and train on a 250m circuit in an almost rectangular courtyard.

I asked the prison authorities if I could train with the prisoners sometime. The answer took a very long time in coming and I had to complain before it did.

So I trained with them, did gymnastics with them, and also went to their weight room.

I asked them if I should organise a race at their prison, and they were immediately in favour of it. It took almost two years to get all the permits because it was new for everybody. I am used to races with 30,000 or more participants, but a 10km race with about 100 runners in a prison is a special event – and it takes a lot of nerve.

The 7th annual 10km race of prisoners in Plötzensee Prison, Berlin was held on Friday 5

May 2023. There was sunshine but a strong wind blew which ruined the chances of personal best performances (which also wish to be achieved in a prison).

There was organisational innovation and relief for the organisers. The timing company (http:// www.ssf-timing.de/) provided for fast delivery of results and instant print-out of certiicates with name, time and placing. These could be handed out immediately to all participants. Such prompt service could not have been given with the previous manual method used. It was also the irst time that there was a team ranking for the individual institutions.

There are special conditions for reporting from prisons in Berlin. The full names of the prisoners may not be published. Nor can photos from the front in which the faces can be identiied. The

photos of male and female runners which can be seen here in full are ‘external participants’ who have been allowed to take part.

The running course is a 1000m loop within the grounds of Plötzensee Prison and Plötzensee Youth Prison. It has to be run 10 times. The course was measured by World Athletics/ AIMS A-grade measurer John Kunkeler, who also accurately and meticulously measures the course of the Berlin Marathon and the Berlin Half Marathon. He also holds the position of spokesman for the event.

The building yard of the JVA Plötzensee is marked out according to stipulations in the

measurement report to ensure the exact running course is followed and no shortcuts are possible. The course is measured according to competition rules and if records were to be set they would have to be oficially recognised.

The races were led by Reinhard Roecher, marathon runner and former oficer of the Plötzensee Prison, on a bicycle. He had to pedal quite hard to keep the course clear for the leading group emitting shrill whistles when lapping slower runners. In addition to the general organisation by the prison authorities, German Road Races is responsible for the sporting organisation and provides external volunteers for the event.

The irst six inishers (of the prisoners) receive prizes from German Road Races (GRR) e.V., certificates, Berlin Marathon jackets (which are highly prized), and T-shirts from the Berlin Marathon. For the second time the administration gave an ‘in-house T-shirt’ with the logo of the event sponsor to all participants and volunteers. The volunteers take on tasks such as issuing race numbers and certiicates, serving drinks, catering and acting as course marshals.

Positive effects of sporting activities for prisoners with limited movement possibili-

ties – which go beyond push-ups and strength exercises – are indisputable and provide special motivation. Running and running therapy in prison provide a stress buffer and are thought to alleviate prisoner stress. The antidepressant and stress-reducing effects of running have been scientiically proven, which is why running in prisons is an important part of resocialisation. Strengthening a positive self-image and improving the chances of reintegration through meaningful leisure activities by running in prison are now recognised by the justice system as an important factor, as a therapeutic measure and as an antidepressant in resocialisation.

This race is not only a lagship event for the Berlin justice system but also allows German Road Races to bring the sport of running closer to all members of society as therapeutic for the soul.

Felix Hackenbruch, runner and journalist, wrote an article in the Berlin newspaper Tagespiegel entitled: ‘JVA Plötzensee: Prisoners run for resocialisation’ on 9 May 2023. He quoted an inmate with whom he ran the ten laps: “During sport you forget everything, your thoughts are simply gone. Sport helps to get the mind off things for a few hours. It’s the only compensation we have here.”

8th Berlin 10 km race for prisoners on ■ Friday, 26 April 2024 at Plötzensee Prison

*Between 1933 and 1945, 2891 people were sentenced to death and executed at Plötzensee Prison, including participants in the failed coup of 20 July 1944.
