A diverse and colourful cultural tour
In 1976 a small band of running enthusiasts met at the Metropolitan YMCA on LaSalle Street in Chicago to plan a marathon in the city. This founding group realized their vision on 25 September 1977 when they hosted 4200 local participants in the frst Chicago Marathon.

Before reaching the 5km mark runners have already passed through the areas of Streeterville and River North on their way to the Loop. The Loop is Chicago’s central business district,

Hyogo and Kobe have achieved creative reconstruction after the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake. These cities have provided the experiences and lessons of the event to disaster victims around the world on the basis that all people are friends and share joys and sorrows.
Strangers can become friends
The desire to offer hospitality to visitors to Hyogo and Kobe also springs from the consciousness of companionship and community. Marathon runners share the joy of fnishing the run and achieving their goals.
We would like to increase the power of such a marathon so that it sends cheerfulness to the people and regions that have been badly

affected by disasters.
Looking ahead | 17 November 2024 Kobe Marathon, Japan
The race attracts participants not only from Japan but also from overseas – particularly from East Asia including Taiwan and Hong Kong. Around 2000 international runners are expected in the 2024 edition. The Kobe Marathon PR Ambassadors contribute to the excitement surrounding these participants.
The ambassadors include well-known Japanese infuencers Takaya Mitsuka and Miki Shimura, alongside infuencers from Taiwan, Hong Kong, Thailand, Singapore, and China. They will participate in the Kobe Marathon and share their experiences of the event.
Approximately 20,000 people gather from all over the country and overseas to participate. They run through the city enjoying the sights of Kobe. The race starts in front of city hall where the stone monument commemorating Japan’s frst marathon in Kobe stands. The course winds its way through the streets of exotic Kobe in which urban sophistication is balanced by the natural beauty of the sparkling Seto Inland Sea with the Rokko Mountain Range behind. Along the scenic coastal route lies the world’s largest suspension bridge, the Akashi Kaikyō Bridge, stretching majestically along the coastline. Except for the Kobe-Ohashi Bridge, towards the end, the course remains relatively fat, with the Kobe-Ohashi Bridge climbing about 25 metres.
There is a 7-hour cutoff so it’s possible for beginners to complete the run. Crowds of well-wishers
line the entire course to cheer the runners on, refecting the marathon’s theme of “Thanks & Friendship”.
Plans are underway to change the course from next year so this year it may be the last chance to experience the passage over the Kobe-Ohashi Bridge. After the course changes are made the route will be fatter and faster to facilitate record-breaking performances.
This year’s event is scheduled for Sunday 17 November 2024. International entries will be accepted until Monday 19 August.

Marabana Marathon & Half & 10km, Cuba
Continued from page 29
What really attracts the participants is the 8km seafront along the cinematic Malecón. The sound of the waves and the ambient music of the Cuban people are the perfect travelling companions for treasuring memories that will remain in the minds of the participants for life. The Malecón sums up the history and daily life of Havana, the best expression of the life of those who live in and provide the Cuban capital with colour.
Marabana – Maratón de La Habana seeks to involve everyone in its great celebration of Cuban sport. For this reason the event offers four different distances. International participants can choose which of the distances they want to run on the event’s website: the full marathon through the centre of Havana, a half marathon, a 10km run or a 5km run.
The Marabana – Maratón de La Habana, is certifed as a member of AIMS (Association of Marathons and Distance Races) and stands out for the large number of runners coming from other countries. In 2019 this exceeded 60 nationalities. Havana’s Marathon starts and fnishes in front of the monumental Capitol and is the only Cuban event offcially certifed as an international race.
Dynamic and colourful backdrop to a straight and fat course
A natural allure that captivates
The Halong Bay Heritage Marathon proudly claims the title of having the most spectacular course globally, tracing the shorelines of the poetic Ha Long Bay.
Entering its 10th year, the Halong Bay Heritage Marathon stands as one of the oldest marathons in the Heritage Race series and in Vietnam as a whole. Held in Ha Long City, Quang Ninh, the marathon route winds along the romantic Ha Long Bay. Recognised both by World Athletics and AIMS, the course has been included in the Age Group Ranking System of Abbott World Marathon Majors since 2022. It has also been acknowledged by Runner’s World UK as one of the 50 most breathtaking running routes globally.
The race offers four distances: 5km, 10km, half marathon (21.1km), and full marathon (42.2km). Runners have the opportunity to conquer the scenic coastal course which traverses Ha Long Bay from Ha Long City to Cam Pha City. With limestone mountains against the backdrop of the azure sea, the route offers a picturesque blend of nature’s beauty and is sure to invigorate runners.
The straight and fat course, with no intersections, ensures runners’ safety and allows them to fully focus on their performance. On top of that the fresh atmosphere along the bay combined with the late autumn weather, ranging from 18–25ºC, helps runners to achieve their best results...

prizes to the winning athletes. He will also sign certifcates for athletes achieving sub-3 and 3:30 records for the Full Marathon distance.
Building on the triumphs of past seasons the Halong Bay Heritage Marathon 2024 has swiftly garnered interest from domestic and international athletes. Nearly 4000 athletes from numerous countries have signed up to conquer the 21.1 km and 42.2km distances.
Ha Long is an ideal destination for runners thanks to its special geographical location and excellent transportation infrastructure. The marathon takes place in November, offering the perfect late fall climate for an enjoyable journey. By blending running with sightseeing,
runners and their families can explore the city’s renowned tourist attractions such as Bai Chay Beach, Bai Tho Mountain, Tuan Chau Park, and the bustling Halong Night Market, renowned for its shopping and dining opportunities.
In particular, Ha Long Bay and the Cat Ba Archipelago are distinguished as UNESCO World Heritage Sites with a natural allure that captivates both domestic and international tourists. In December 2023 Ha Long Bay was offcially recognized as Vietnam’s World Natural Heritage Site, an honour bestowed by UNESCO only three times.
With 1,133 limestone islands of various shapes and sizes the Ha Long – Cat Ba Archipelago resembles a mesmerising chessboard crafted
from precious stones, featuring serene waters and pristine white sand beaches.
Regarded as a geological marvel received from the gods, this region holds a heritage of global signifcance, bearing witness to the Earth’s evolutionary history. It consists of a remarkable level of biodiversity in Asia encompassing seven ecosystems: primary tropical rainforest, caves, mangroves, tidal fats, coral reefs, soft bottoms and saltwater lakes. The Ha Long Bay – Cat Ba Archipelago also serves as a habitat for many rare species of animals and plants.
Runners and their companions can relish the tranquility and fresh air on yacht excursions navigating through distinctive landmarks such as Ga Choi Island, Dinh Huong Island, Sung Sot Cave, Thien Cung Cave and Titop Island.
Ha Long in particular and Quang Ninh in general boast a diverse cuisine featuring many delectable dishes such as squid rolls, vermicelli noodles, sweet and sour fried sam, Ha Long pearl yogurt, nodding cake, and chicken Tien Yen hill... With well-developed infrastructure this coastal locale can accommodate the culinary, lodging, and sightseeing needs of many runners and tourists during the days of the event.
Halong Bay Heritage Marathon is not just a footrace; it also fervently advocates for a healthy lifestyle while showcasing the splendour of this magnifcent, dynamic, modern and colourful heritage land to international friends.

Maratona di Pisa, Italy
Run through historic streets and past the sea
Maratona di Pisa turns twenty-fve
Many things have changed since the frst Marathon in Pisa.
Running a marathon is not just about trying to set your best time; not just about competing with yourself or against others. It is also a great opportunity to meet people from all around the globe, experience different cultures and have some fun.
Pisa has a thousand-year history and its monuments bear eternal testimony to its past greatness. The Piazza del Duomo, known as the Piazza dei Miracoli, is a historical and artistic masterpiece and the Tower of Pisa is perhaps the best-known monument in the world.
The start and fnish line is at the renowned Leaning Tower from where runners set out to run through history, nature and by the seaside.
Soon after starting you reach the Arno River. Running along its left and right banks gives a unique view of ancient buildings refected in the river. The city offers millennia-old churches and modern murals by famous street artists, frst and foremost Keith Haring with his “Tuttomondo”.
The race leaves the city centre and crosses a natural park, passing next to the Basilica of San Piero a Grado, a marvel of Romanesque style. After passing through a pine forest, you arrive at the sea.
The sea was what made Pisa one of the four Republics in Italian history and which, thanks to its benefcial infuence, makes the climate mild

even in winter. After skirting the beaches and the blue waters the route returns to the city with the famous Apuan Alps behind it. The marble for the sculptures of the great Italian masters was extracted from here and continues to this day.
After the last straight you enter the square. The Tower provides the background to your joy and happiness.
Maratona di Pisa is fast and fat: there are almost no variations in altitude or sharp turns to slow the pace.
There are many reasons to choose Maratona di Pisa. Its city airport makes it easily accessible, as does the railway station in the centre. All the city’s museums remain open and offer discounts to marathon runners and their companions.
Pisa is one of the last races on the international calendar – the last chance of the year to get your qualifying time or beat your personal best. The Half Marathon is certifed by FIDAL.
Race day is in the week before Christmas so it’s a great opportunity to take a break and bring home Italian Christmas gifts. Friends and relatives can run the Family Run. Participating in the event will brighten their stay and give a taste of the quality and hospitality of the Tuscan land.
To celebrate the 25th birthday we ask all athletes to bring a small gift – the fag of their own country. With the #bringyourfag project we want to build the largest fag puzzle in sporting history, on the lawn right under the Leaning Tower. Pisa and its marathon and half marathon await you.
When the starting gun for the 1st Berlin People’s Marathon was fred on 13 October 1974 in front of the Mommsen Stadium, none of the 286 participants could have imagined how the race would develop over the coming decades.
From the second edition on the start and fnish were moved into the Mommsenstadion. In 1977 Christa Vahlensieck ran a new world best time of 2:34:47,5.
The Berlin Marathon, organised by an allvolunteer team, enjoyed increasing popularity in the late 1970s but retained its image as a fun run in the Grunewald woods. Meanwhile, metropolises such as New York and London, with
their spectacular city marathons, were showing how things could be done in Berlin.
At a meeting with the Berlin Chief of Police race co-founder Horst Milde was introduced as a “madman” for wanting the course to run through the city. But the “madness” won out and the Berlin Marathon moved out of the Grunewald and into the city. On 27 September 1981 the feld in front of the Reichstag was the starting point of the frst 42.2 kilometres through the city for 3486 runners from 30 nations. The fnish line was right in the centre of West Berlin at the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church.
In the early 1980s the Berlin Marathon
From a fun run in the woods to a global marathon highlight
developed into one of the fve biggest marathons in the world. The course ran partly along the Berlin Wall. Berlin’s top sporting event also attracted a lot of attention in the eastern part of the city. From 1987 to 1989 the start of the race was moved to directly in front of the Brandenburg Gate due to the increasing number of participants. During these years, African runners dominated the race for the frst time.
The frst run through the Brandenburg Gate in 1990 was an emotional milestone. A few days before the reunifcation of Germany 25,000 enthusiastic athletes from all over the world celebrated by running and caused a worldwide sensation. Former East Berliner Uta Pippig won the women’s race with a new course record of 2:28:37.
The Brazilian Ronaldo da Costa sprang a big surprise in the 1998 race. After a modest frst half he dramatically sped up and, in the race

The f rst Berlin Marathon through the open Brandenburg Gate of his life, pulverised the 10-year-old marathon world record with a time of 2:06:05. Shortly after crossing the fnish line he did a cartwheel and danced the samba. A year later crowd favourite Tegla Loroupe from Kenya improved the women’s world record to 2:20:43. The message went around the marathon world: Berlin’s course is fast!
From 2000 there was a Japanese women’s winner for six years in a row. One of these was Naoko Takahashi, who was the frst woman to break the 2:20 barrier in 2001 and gave the Berlin Marathon its 4th world record. Her run was also broadcast live on Japanese TV and generated record ratings.
On 28 September 1997 inline skaters took part in the Berlin Marathon for the frst time. The race quickly developed into the world’s largest inline marathon. In 2003 9612 athletes rolled through the city. Olympic speed skating champion Bart Swings from Belgium became a serial winner. He won eight times and set a fantastic course record of 56:45 in 2022.
In 2003 the traditional race made another quantum leap. The new course, with start and fnish between the Brandenburg Gate and the Victory Column, landed right in the heart of the city. Ever since then the unforgettable highlight for every participant has been the fnish with the backdrop of the Brandenburg Gate, the symbol of German reunifcation.
From 2006 to 2009 Berliners celebrated their marathon hero Haile Gebrselassie. One of the most successful long-distance runners of all time the Ethiopian chose Berlin as the venue for his greatest triumphs over the classic distance and became a legend here.
The Berlin Marathon became more and more international with the total number of participants (running, inline skating, wheelchair racing,
Since 2006 the Berlin Marathon has been a member of the AWMM (Abbott World Marathon Majors), an association of six of the biggest marathons in the world. It is in the illustrious company of top events in the sporting metropolises of Tokyo, London, Boston, Chicago and New York. The result is a lively exchange of ideas and experiences.
In 2011 the Berlin Marathon sold out in record time of just under three hours. Since then there has been a lottery to meet the ever-increasing demand for the coveted starting numbers.
From 2015 another marathon icon left his mark on the Berlin Marathon. The Kenyan Eliud Kipchoge ran two world records in his fve victories. He too will forever be a hero of the city.
The fnal highlight so far, however, was achieved by a woman. Tigist Assefa from Ethiopia ran a sensational world record of 2:11.53 at the
49th BMW Berlin Marathon on 24 September 2023, beating the old record by more than two minutes. A total of 13 world records have been broken at the Berlin Marathon, more than at any other.
We are looking forward to the 50th edition of this fascinating and inspiring event!
