The 24th World Congress of AIMS took place on 14-16 November 2024 in the Vietnamese capital Hanoi.
The Congress hosts, DHA, organise ‘heritage’ Marathons both in Hanoi and in Halong Bay and gave the opportunity for participants in the Congress to run in one of the Halong Bay events.
The Vietnamese approach to the Marathon in the last 10 years has been to integrate the running experience with the heritage of the country and the locality. Halong Bay, as a UNESCO World Heritage site, embodies this approach and maximises the touristic appeal of the Marathon by linking it with the physical heritage of the race location.
The opening presentation to the Congress in Hanoi by Man Nguyen explained how the heritage theme had been introduced to other locations by incorporation of local traditions and festivities. The organisers had found that runners were very receptive to these cultural aspects, whether they be domestic or international participants.
“We looked at Vietnam’s tourism industry and the ways to promote it as the marathon can be seen as a part of it.”
Speaking on behalf of European Athletics Marko Vasic saw running as moving towards becoming an industry and advocated that organisers “Act as an industry and cooperate as a movement”.
“Tech on the Track: AI for the Next Generation of Race Organisation”: Jorge Maravilla, COO and CMO of Neurun gave a virtual presentation and explained that
24th World Congress
Neurun is “an innovative AI race concierge that can answer any questions about an event or race course, assess a participant’s readiness for race day and even recommend weather-appropriate gear”.
In their joint presentation on “Healthy Races – Healthy Planet” Dr Shawanda Morrison and Dr Karim Abu Omar showed that carbon dioxide emissions had not abated and that professional sport was a big contributor. Even organisers who have reduced their carbon footprint indirectly generate increasing emissions once participants’ travel to the event have been factored in. They offered a reminder that “There will be no sport on a dead planet.”
Continuing the afternoon session of the frst day a series of reports on AIMS’ activity were presented, starting with a Membership and Financial report from Paco Borao and Al Boka, a Marketing report from Tetsuo Okamura, a Technical report from Rachid Ben Meziane, and a Social Responsibility report from Martha Morales. Gary Friar gave a Communications report detailing the content of recent editions of Distance Running and postings on the AIMS website. Much of this was in promotion of the Congress, alongside other channels including Facebook and WhatsApp.
Candidates for the election of four Board Members positions were announced and presented
themselves with a short address to Congress.
Two applicants for the hosting of the 25th World Congress of AIMS presented: Nepalgunj Marathon in Nepal and Midnight Sun Marathon in Tromsø, Norway, with the vote to be taken on morning of the fnal day of Congress.
The Welcome Dinner was held on the evening of the frst day (14 November).
On the second day presentations were made by AIMS sponsors: Marathon Photos (photo partner), Always Advancing (medal partner), Run Japan (registration partner) and Health (sports partner).
Vivek Singh gave a presentation on the explosive growth of distance running in India over the last 20 years and how this has been achieved. The sedentary lifestyle has been overtaken by a growing consciousness of health and wellness inspired by the inclusiveness offered through an active and engaged lifestyle.
Two panel discussions were held, one on women’s participation in running and the other on provision for the participation of people with disability. In a breakout session the discussion provided material for a fuller examination of what different AIMS-member races are achieving in this feld and these were reported back to the main session.

Sasho Belovski, managing director of the Superhalfs related the history of this European race series and its huge success in attracting participants to sign up for the member races – so much so that the category of entrants had to be limited so as not to disadvantage local runners.
The Gala Dinner was held in the evening of the second day of Congress (15 November).
On the fnal day voting took place for the election of the President, four Board members, and for the determination of the venue of the 25th World Congress of AIMS.
The next World Congress of AIMS will be held in Tromsø, (in June 2026) in the far north of Norway, at the time of the Midnight Sun. We look forward to seeing you there. Please encourage those members who did not attend in Hanoi to come to Norway – the land of the Midnight Sun.

It is not another spring morning in Madrid, it is race day.
The sun shines over the city and people are getting ready to run, cheer or volunteer for one of the greatest sporting events of the city: the Zurich Rock’n’Roll Running Series Madrid.
The dreams and goals of more than 40,000 runners are more than ready. They’ve been waiting for months… or even years.
In their homes, hotels, or at a friend’s house, alarms are ringing as the fnal hour is approaching. Some of them start at 08.00 with the 10km and some others – with longer distances – will have to wait another hour to fnally start their celebration.
The city is full of runners who fuel with a proper breakfast. They are all sharing the same secret ingredient: their desire for running. They are already dressed up in all their gear: their chosen running shoes, shorts, the offcial race t-shirt that claims ‘MADRID’ and of course their bib number, which they proudly wear on top of everything else.
At 08.00 there is the gunshot: the party has begun. The city is awake earlier than on any other Sunday as the frst runners hit the pavement. They take on a course of 10km that tours one of the most amazing city centres in the world.
At 09.00 there is another gunshot: 21km and 42km runners start their long countdown to their fnish line. Kilometre by kilometre, rock bands play their songs and people cheer the runners; the city is alive more than on any other day. The streets are closed for cars, buses, transit but open for those who decided to accept the big challenge that is the Spanish capital: hilly only as its avenues and streets, beautiful like no other city, monumental like its history and as warming as its people.
As rock classics play in the background runners start to reach the fnish line. Glorious, like adventurers returning home with treasures from distant lands. They hug, they kiss, they celebrate. Their priceless smiles are captured in photographs. They grab their medal that symbolizes not only the accomplishment of fnishing the race but the months of training, early mornings, sacrifce, discipline and self-love.
There is no better way to honour all the effort they have made… and there is no better way to feel Madrid.
Register now and get ready to live a priceless experience.

Runners of all levels are welcome, with a choice between the

Whether you’re aiming for a personal best or simply savouring the joy of running in an international event, the Tórshavn Marathon promises an unforgettable experience for all
of the local running club organising the event, she was keen to spread the word about what a great race this was so in the end I couldn’t resist signing up. I hadn’t realised what a stunning location this would be for a marathon though.
The capital city of Tórshavn means Thor’s Harbour. Usually the islands are subject to unsettled weather but I landed in clear sunshine having connected at Copenhagen for the fight to the

of the sea. I knew in advance that this would be a challenging course so I had duly trained on hills to prepare myself for the 600 metres of climb on the course. I felt reasonably confdent although I was still daunted by the distance ahead of me. I had plodded around plenty of half marathons before but never felt capable of doing the same distance twice in a row.
I fnally lined up by the pretty harbour in Tórshavn alongside the 5k, 10k and half marathon racers for the frst full marathon of my life. I had made it this far. There was no turning back now. The race started innocuously with a gentle 8km loop of the city before a steep ascent of the coastal road with a stunning view of the North Atlantic and the hump-backed neighbouring island of Nólsoy. The road then turned away from the ocean and we had a long descent as the road picked up the shore of the dramatic fjord, the Kaldbaksfjørður.
As we ran along the fjord, the scenery became more spectacular. Waterfalls cascaded down the steep hillside on either side of the water with only the strengthening breeze and baaing of sheep disturbing the tranquil closed road
course. The sun was out though and after the half marathon turning point there were just 100 full marathon runners on this part of the course. We had the whole length of the fjord, both sides of it, to ourselves. Soon enough the front runners had reached the turning point and were heading back along the shoreside in the opposite direction.
I fnally reached the hamlet of Kaldbak with its beautiful turf-roofed church and a few fag
waving kids cheering us on. I was feeling good. It felt like I had the whole of this majestic fjord to myself. But the wind was strengthening, the temperature was dropping and I knew I had some big hills ahead as we started the steady climb from the shoreline of the fjord back towards the city.
The hills I had descended a couple of hours earlier seemed much steeper than I remembered on the way out. There were only three or four runners within sight by now and I knew I had dig in for the last few kilometres. I found that even the downhills were hard to negotiate. The historic old town fnally came into view and I was able to run the last few hundred metres along the fag lined streets down towards the fnish line by the harbour.
As I crossed the line Katrin presented me with a superb chunky medal which showed the hammer of Thor. I had done it in 5:36, thankfully within the six-hour cut off point. It was not the easiest course to do for my frst marathon but I couldn’t think of another one I’d rather have done.
The Corpus Christi holiday brings runners worldwide to the largest street racing festival in Latin America, the Rio Marathon.
Comprising four distances and fve modalities, it is the mecca of Brazilian amateur athletes and, without a doubt, a race that anyone from any part of the world should add to their wish list.
Since the end of the pandemic the number of participants in the event has grown dramatically, jumping from 20,000 to an expected 50,000 in 2025. As the race consolidates there is a growing social and fnancial impact on the city, with almost 95% of its hotel network occupied as an example. These numbers help to explain the critical and public success of the race, raised to another level by the organisation of Dream Factory and Spiridon – in partnership now for over a decade.
As for the races, four distances challenge those who venture onto the asphalt of Aterro do Flamengo. The 5km will be held on Thursday, followed by the 10km on Friday, the Half Marathon on Saturday, and the Marathon, as the great spectacle, on Sunday. Apart from the individual races there is also the possibility of running the 21k + 42k, to complete the Marvelous City Challenge and receive a third exclusive medal.
In addition to the kilometres covered, the Rio Marathon is considered the “Rock in Rio for runners” as it includes a full schedule of shows and entertainment after the race. There is also the possibility of experiences from sponsoring brands and other actions that elevate the level of the event to that of major global races, including Majors.
There’s nowhere else quite like this fastgrowing race
Continued from page 27
There is still an intimate feeling of belonging when crossing one of the fnish gates of the Rio Marathon, which will celebrate its 23rd anniversary next year. At the fnish lines plans are made, wishes are fulflled and promises are kept. Accents meet in the arena and there is an unforgettable memory for everyone who experiences the days of running and partying in Rio de Janeiro.
Running in the city of Rio makes a big difference. Whether enjoying the beautiful landscapes of Aterro, starting with the unforgettable sunrise in Leblon, or running through the historic gems of the Centre, each distance carries within itself an essential part of this ‘Carioquice’, the way of living of Rio. There is no place on Earth that combines all of Rio de Janeiro’s unique characteristics.
It is easy to see from the photos what moves our audience. It is easy to see how the city’s beauty integrates well with the route. It is easy to get a sense of the grandeur of the party. It is easy to feel in the photos the affection that everyone involved has for the race. However, only those who come here can describe with all the words, emotions and sensations what it is like to experience the Rio Marathon.
Next June all roads lead you to this particular place in Brazil, in the Rio de Janeiro state: the Marvelous City, with the party starting at Marina da Glória.
Everyone runs to Rio.

participants once again set off on a 21.1km long party. The event is an experience not to be missed.
It starts with the course. The city route was designed to ft as many tourist attractions as possible into 21.0975 kilometres. There are almost 50 of them. It all starts on the city’s “sinful mile”, where for once the party animals are fowing on the streets instead of the pavements. From there it’s down to the harbour, past the historic Speicherstadt (a UNESCO world heritage site) through a tunnel in Downtown Hamburg, over the Kennedy Bridge, around the Outer Alster lake until reaching the fnish line at the exhibition grounds. These are just some of the sightseeing highlights – you might miss a few along the way.
The 40 or so event points, which on average give the half marathon runners a boost every 500 metres, also play their part. With DJ support, live music, African, South American and Japanese drums, a real Swiss mountain festival with alpenhorns, a Low German shanty choir, several cheering zones and artists, you are virtually carried along the course. One acoustic and visual highlight follows the next. The kilometres fy by and the spectators along the course know exactly what is expected of them.
On the home straight the blue carpet is rolled out for the participants as they are greeted by a frenetic crowd. A few metres later you can be celebrated as a fnisher of the hella hamburg half marathon – only about 1.5 kilometres from the starting point on the Reeperbahn, where the party began.
Hamburg can once again look forward to a spectacle that attracts guests from over 90 nations to the city every year. A large international elite feld and many running crews are likely to have already made a note of the date when one of Germany’s biggest half marathons invites them to dance again. On 29 June 2025, the motto will once again be: Hamburg Half – Double Fun!

Looking ahead | 5–6 July 2025
Gold Coast Marathon, Australia
Enlarged feld of 15,000 sold out
Flat, fast and scenic
The ASICS Gold Coast Marathon is held on the Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia.
The 2025 edition will be the largest ever feld in the event’s 45-year history. A brand new race schedule will see the 42.195km signature race
become the sole event on Sunday 6 July, 2025 with a sell-out feld of 15,000 participants. This is an increase on the 10,000 participants who took part in the 2024 edition – which was also a sell-out. Marathon running is certainly alive and well in Australia!
Continued on page 41
Continued from page 39
The marathon will be supported by a ‘Super Saturday’ schedule of races on Saturday 5 July, 2025 with an anticipated further 20,000 participants across the China Airlines Half Marathon, Southern Cross University 10km, Gold Coast Airport 5km and Australia Fair 2km Junior Dash.
The ASICS Gold Coast Marathon is fat, fast and scenic. The course runs alongside the picturesque Pacifc Ocean and Gold Coast Broadwater. It is one of the fattest courses in the world with an elevation gain of only 62m (and an elevation loss of 65m). Typically about 60% of runners have recorded personal best times.
The marathon start time is at 06:15 and with the event being held in the middle of the Australian winter participants can expect temperatures of 10 degrees Celsius at race start rising to 18 degrees Celsius by late morning with low humidity. It is a magical experience with the sun rising over the Pacifc Ocean shortly after the race begins. Participants make their way south through the beach-side suburbs of Main Beach, the famous Surfers Paradise, Broadbeach and Miami. Along this section runners will have the ocean on their left and if they are lucky could catch a glimpse of a humpback whale on their southern migration route.
Participants make their southern turn at Miami about 15 kilometres into the race. The course then takes runners back north and they pass the start/fnish area at approximately 31km when the marathon begins in earnest. Once runners have made the northern turn just before 37km they head back to the fnish line alongside the Gold Coast Broadwater.
General entries for the 2025 ASICS Gold Coast Marathon and China Airlines Half Marathon
have sold out but a limited number of entries are available via the offcial international travel agents and partner charities. The Gold Coast awaits!

Run Japan
The company that processes 8 out of 10 registrations for Japanese races also has offers for visitors
Window on Japan for runners
Japan is home to many attractive distance running events throughout the year and visitors can combine running with history and culture, food and sake, or spectacular landscapes.
In 1975 the company Runners K.K. was incorporated and published the frst issue of “Monthly Runners” the following year.
Since 1997 R-bies has operated the running portal RunNet (renamed Run Japan in 2024). Runners can browse the huge number of events available in both rural and metropolitan areas and search for them using their own selectioncriteria. Those searching for castles might end up at the Himeji Castle Marathon in Kyoto prefecture, while those looking for sakura, cherry blossom, might try the Ihatovo Half Marathon in Iwate prefecture.
The main business of Run Japan is providing registration services to distance running events. The Run Japan platform can accept registrations and payments from runners and pass them to the event organisers. The system is so successful that it now processes over 80% of the registrations for Japanese races – over 1,600 events and over four million registered runners.
Run Japan now provides a comprehensive platform connecting Japanese runners to the world and international runners to Japan. For races outside Japan it provides a comfortable, familiar interface for Japanese runners who can register and pay with a trusted platform in their own language and currency.
Additionally R-bies organises race timing for 450 events and provides custom apps for races.
