Marathon,

Japan

Runners pass Osaka’s famous landmarks and historical sites

Just one more step

The Osaka Marathon was first held in 2011 under the slogan “making a rainbow together”. This year marks the 13th time the marathon has been held.

It is a major sports event in which 34,000 runners from Japan and abroad run past Osaka’s famous landmarks and through its historical sites.

The course starts in front of the Osaka Prefectural Office, adjacent to Osaka Castle Park. It then runs through Nakanoshima – a symbol of the so-called city of water; Tenjinbashisuji Shopping Street, known as the longest shopping arcade in Japan; and Midosuji, a symbol of the commercial city of Osaka – before finishing at Osaka Castle Park.

For race day public roads in central Osaka are opened to runners, allowing them to run on the main streets of the city which would normally be busy with traffic.

In 2022 the race received World Athletics’ Gold Label and was integrated with the Lake Biwa Mainichi Marathon, Japan’s oldest marathon. In doing so it became a world-class marathon combining a highly competitive elite field with a large-scale urban mass participation marathon.

The course has only one significant rise and fall and three turning points, making it easy to run. Runners can aim for personal best times on such a high-speed course. The best thing about this course is that even beginners have a completion rate of over 95%.

The Osaka Marathon is fully supported by over a million spectators and 10,000 volunteers.

This includes support through performances such as dancing, cheerleading, and drumming, and the cheers never stop from the start to the finish. Runners are inspired and encouraged to run through the course by the cheers of “Just one more step!”

There is also a wide variety of meals to sustain the runners. “the Maido-AID,” which is very popular for its Osaka specialties and famous sweets, supports runners with takoyaki and drops (“ame-chan” in the Osaka dialect).

Nagoya is conveniently located in the centre of Japan with a major international airport. The race course takes runners to the centre of the city, including the historical Nagoya Castle. The course is mostly flat and the streets are wide, making it very easy to run and finish with a good time. The start and finish are

both at Vantelin Dome Nagoya, a baseball stadium, which sends off and welcomes back the runners with spectacular concert-like music and lighting. It is not a typical marathon venue, as often remarked upon by visitors, and that is the Nagoya Women’s Marathon style. On race weekend the Marathon Expo is held in the Dome, where sports manufacturers and other exhibitors display their products and provide services, attracting many visitors. Local gourmet foods are also available and add extra excitement to the festive atmosphere.

The competition also features a virtual marathon race using a smartphone app, which allows participation from anywhere in the world without the hustle of traveling all the way to Japan.

To all runners who have crossed the finish line, a beautiful crystal tumbler from Baccarat, the French luxury lifestyle brand celebrating its 260th anniversary, will be presented. It will be a “trophy” to congratulate finishers on their accomplishment and when runners receive it smiles and tears will fill their eyes and joy will spread around.

Runners start the race with their own goals, aiming to complete the marathon. They work so hard and keep pushing themselves to their limits until they finally reach the finish line, supported by family, friends, spectators, and volunteers. On race day each and every woman runner becomes the “star,” who plays the leading role in their own story in the marathon. The Nagoya Women’s Marathon wishes to be a special page in the lifetime of their memories.

Zurich Marató de Barcelona, Spain

Barcelona hot spots

The 46th Zurich Marató Barcelona aims to break the event’s registration record.

The biggest race in Barcelona will be on a new course more iconic than ever before. The organisers aim to have more than 20,000 participants to break the record for participation and fill the streets of an extraordinary city like Barcelona.

The Zurich Marató Barcelona has been held annually since 1980 through the streets of the Catalan capital. The first editions of the race, in 1978 and 1979, were the first ‘people’s marathons’ held in Spain, just outside the city in Palafrugell. The organisers launched a new course, flatter and faster than ever before, for the 2024 edition of Barcelona’s great race. Runners now have 30m less to ascend over

the length of the course than previously and fewer bends to negotiate.

The new course passes through more than fifteen emblematic places in Barcelona, starting at Passeig de Gràcia, and continuing all the way through to the finish line through

the Arc de Triomf. Sights along the way include the Casa Batlló, Bac de Roda Bridge, Sagrada Família, Ninot Market, the University of Barcelona, Sant Antoni Market, Plaza Catalunya, the Columbus Monument, França Train Station, Ciutadella’s Park and the Hotel Arts and Fòrum’s Park.

The new course has been designed so that runners and their companions can enjoy it at the same time. Animation is one of the strong points of the race, as the new course of the Zurich Marató Barcelona crosses the city centre. It is possible to reach different points on the course in a few minutes on foot, as well as make good connections with public transport. International participants made up 58% of the field in the last edition – indicating that this race has one of the most inviting atmospheres of any marathon in the world.

For 2025 there will be several more initiatives, starting with a new race concept, “Barcelona Hits Different”. This is inspired by music festivals to create a unique and exciting experience for participants throughout the weekend of the event. Starting with the HotSpots, animations at each kilometre point of the course representing different local cultural and sporting entities and truly reflecting Barcelona’s diversity. The Marathon Masters programme involves a small tribute being given to those who have run the race up to five times. The Corre a Casa circuits are aimed at making it easier to train around Barcelona. The DONAnt Pas is an initiative through a female marathon ambassador and official female trainers to create a community to encourage more and more women to participate in the race.

The values of the Zurich Marató Barcelona 2025 are also in line with those of the city in which it takes place. Multiculturalism, inclusiveness and a good atmosphere are hallmarks of the city that are also present in its marathon and halfmarathon, the eDreams Mitja Marató Barcelona by Brooks 2025 (16 February).

Sihanoukville International Half Marathon, Cambodia

Enjoy the beauty of nature in Cambodia

Pristine white beaches

The Sihanoukville International Half Marathon will be organized on 30 March with the Khmer New Year Festival following in early April.

The race is unique, run on a beautiful long coastal road in Cambodia alongside what is known as one of the most beautiful bays in the world.

The event was created in 2012, after the Tsunami disasters in Asia, with the purpose of protecting the environment and appreciating nature. Runners will certainly enjoy the fresh sea air and the beautiful sunrise over the pristine white beaches alongside the course. They can get a feeling of oneness with the power of mother nature in the tranquil atmosphere of the early morning.

Sihanoukville (Kompong Som) is known as a city of casinos backed by Chinese investors but the local traditional businesses keep going as normal. These include local food stalls, restaurants along the beaches of Ocheauteal,

independent beach enterprises such as boat trips to famous islands nearby for scuba diving or snorkelling, etc.

Sihanoukville is 230km from Phnom Penh and directly connected to the capital by a modern highway. Travellers take around two and a half hours to get between the two cities.

The race has attracted some fast runners who return each year, such as Ms Ota Natsuko from Japan who won the 21K with a time of 1:52:27 in 2023. In 2024 she reached the finish line in 1:39:06 – again as the first female finisher. The asphalt roads have some hilly sections but these present just a small challenge. The first Cambodian runner in 2024 was Ouk Rohit, who finished the race in a time of 1:15:26. This result is appreciated and has inspired many local runners to train hard for the competition in the coming year.

The course has been designed for runners to enjoy the beauty of nature, although it also passes by the busy downtown area before reaching the finish line. Road closures are strictly enforced by the local authorities. The refreshment stations are set up every 2km to ensure enough water and electrolyte drinks for runners in this dry season. First aid and medical care are provided by both international and local hospitals.

Tourists and runners alike can explore and enjoy nightlife including culinary diversity of restaurants and bars alongside the beaches and all over town. Attractions in Sihanoukville province come in great variety and certainly leave tourists with cherished memories.

The Cambodian Marathon Committee would like to extend their warmest invitation to runners around the world to come and run our Sihanoukville International Half Marathon. Best wishes and warmest regards to all runners.

International Marathon Varadero, Cuba

Run “where the sun always shines”

Dream beaches all around

The International Varadero Marathon is a very special sports event organised in the Caribbean, a paradise where the sun always shines and dream beaches lie all around in the gorgeous country of Cuba.

The first edition of the International Half Marathon in Varadero was held on 15 April 2018. Organised by the Cuban Athletics Federation, Alberto Juantorena is the head of the organising committee which includes Olympic medal winners Ana Fidelia Quirot, Javier Sotomayor, Caridad Colon, Dayron Robles and Jorge Luis Aguilera.

Continued from page 39

There are two kinds of races to choose between, running and skating, each with three distances: 10km, 21km, 42km and also a non-competitive 3km fun run.

This is a unique and first class event in which the participants enjoy running in a beautiful natural environment together with Olympic champions and other elite runners from international athletics. Timothy Kiplagat (second place in the 2023 Tokyo Marathon with 02:02:55) participated in the Half Marathon of Varadero twice, in 2018 and 2019.

The International Varadero Marathon offers runners a flat circuit. The race starts and finishes in the Central Park (8000 capacity) in the city of Varadero. The first kilometre of the race is along First Avenue with the famous ‘Josone Park’ on the right.

Founders Francis Kay and Alison Kay, who launched Marathon-Photos.com in 1999, transformed the landscape of race photography.

What began as a sleepless night’s epiphany for Francis – wondering aloud if there was a better way to sell race photos than through traditional prints – evolved into a global sensation. Their innovation introduced searchable online photos by name and bib number, setting a new standard in the industry.

Francis’s vision came to life with the launch

Just over a year ago Marathon Photos underwent a transition of ownership that was as smooth as it was exciting

Marathon Photos: a seamless transition

of Marathon-Photos.com, timed to coincide with the world’s first marathon of the new millennium, held in Hamilton, New Zealand, on January 1, 2000. The concept proved so successful that by the end of that year 12 events featured online photos. The company’s evolution continued with a shift to digital photography in 2003, leading to exponential growth.

Today, Marathon Photos stands as a global trailblazer, offering everything from personal race videos and photo packs to the latest innovation: Marathon Photo Live. This cuttingedge feature allows athletes to receive a portion

of their race images directly to their phones on race day, enhancing the experience for runners and their families.

The transition of ownership on 1 July 2023 was handled with seamless precision. Daniel Parker, who first met Francis in the 1990s and joined Marathon Photos a decade ago as a systems administrator, has taken over as owner and CEO. With his tech expertise and fresh ideas, the future of Marathon Photos looks promising.

Continued from page 43

Juliet Parker, Daniel’s wife and co-owner, has brought her skills to the forefront. When not leading the customer service team or managing photography crews, Juliet actively participates in events, capturing the essence of race day energy and engaging with runners. Juliet shares, “I genuinely love being part of the empire we’re building. Contributing to someone’s milestone race or first win is indescribable. The experience of traveling to iconic races like the Great Wall Marathon in China adds a unique and beautiful dimension to our work.” The Marathon Photos legacy continues within the family, as Daniel and Juliet’s teens, Finn and Aleisha, begin their own journey in photography.

Partner highlight

Francis is thrilled with how the transition has unfolded, praising Daniel’s skills, passion, and enthusiasm. Daniel reflects on his first year as owner, saying, “We’ve been on a whirlwind adventure across the globe laying new foundations and if I’m to sum it all up, it’s positive and exciting. We have big plans ahead, with growth in staff and race events. I’m eager to see what we achieve in the next five years. Our focus remains on technology, innovation, and delivering the best possible customer experience and products.”

While Daniel remains tight-lipped about specific future plans, he promises that exciting developments are on the horizon.

Although Marathon Photos has changed hands

there is a wonderful fusion of old and new. Francis and Alison continue to attend beloved events like the Outback Marathon Australia, Comrades Marathon and the Big Five in South Africa, enjoying a semi-retirement while still staying connected to the industry. Daniel and Juliet relish the opportunity to be inspired by their journey and share special moments together on tour.

Looking ahead to 2025, there’s a thrilling lineup of global races and important meets on the horizon. Both Francis and Daniel will be at the World Congress of AIMS in Vietnam this November representing Marathon Photos as AIMS Photo Partners.

So fast! The men marathon record is 2h’03’27’’ (2024) and the women’s record is 2h18’52’’ (2022). And it’s the marathon with most men clocking in under 2h10’ in the entire history of the world (41), and it’s the second in the world with the most finisher women under 2h30’ (29).

Close your eyes for a moment. Enjoy your passion for running and for marathons in the Andalusian sun in February. Live some magical days in Seville, with all its history, the unique atmosphere of its streets, its delicious cuisine. Visit the Giralda, the Torre del Oro, the Maestranza and, of course, the Plaza de España...

Stop dreaming of living a marathon in Seville ... See you at the starting line of one of the most beautiful cities in the world in 2025! TOP 6 WORLD MARATHON: 2H03:27

Have the opportunity to embrace 42 kilometers along the crowded city center of the city, with son many people cheering you up to take you to the finish line.

A perfect marathon to achieve your new personal best in a completely flat course. It’s the flattest marathon in Europe and has the highest percentage of finishers below 3 hours!

A marathon with a high quality organization, absolutely top, as accredited by its World Athletics Elite Label, with an extraordinary pasta meal that you will not find in any other marathon.
