Editor’s Letter

June was a pretty great month, #LoveWins. So I am expecting a lot from July. For me, July means one of my best friends is coming to visit so I have been planning lots of fun touristy things {which might lead to a travel guide to South Florida for one of our next issues} and it means travel. I will be in St. Petersburg toward the end of the month and then it will be time to get my things together for the journey back to Austin {how crazy is that?}. Because America is celebrating it’s independence tomorrow the theme of this issue is “Americana,” an idea I got for another magazine I work with back in January because this year we are celebrating a Civil War anniversary. Our Americana issue features lots of images of sparklers, so get ready for a Pinterest overload. We also have an awesome guide to red, white, and blue fashion compiled by Ally of The Preppy Little Lesbian and Sonia of Here Comes The Sun. Our Op-Ed this month is by Tatum of The Pace about why July is the best month in the calendar. The cover girl, Bess of Evergreen & Ivy, is absolutely fabulous. She attends The University of The South {Sewanee College} and lives in Colorado {her photos are absolutely amazing}. She offers some inspiring advice for our college ladies and discusses some of her favorite things about July as well as Independence Day. As always, remember to follow us on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest, and that District is “your right to a beautiful life.”

Keep It Beautiful,

T

he 4th of July is one of my favorite holidays in the year – the fireworks, the family, the fun! But what about the fashion? Independence Day certainly isn’t one of the big fashion holidays like New Years Eve or Halloween but that doesn’t mean we can’t go above and beyond in our red, white and blues, right? Break the mold of a American flag tank top that you bought online or the flag bandana you bought at Hobby Lobby and let’s turn the 4th into a fashion forward holiday! I have compiled a few outfits with just stuff out of my closet to help inspire you! Enjoy your 4th of July and be sure to share your outfits with us by tagging us on Instagram {@district_mag}! Happy Independence Day! The Neighborhood Get Together

White shorts, Red and White tank with Navy accent If you are participating in the neighborhood BBQ with fireworks down the street this outfit is for you! Shorts keep it easy for you to plop down on the grass with the kids and it’s light and enables you to plop right down on the grass with the kids. The perfect 4th of July outfit! Just add sparklers! A Little Dressier

Red, White and Blue Dress If you have a party at the lake or at your SOs house, this outfit is for you. A playfully patterned shirt dress is a fun way to be a little more dressed up. If you feel inclined to accessorize, a skinny red dress subtly breaks up the blue and white. Embracing Flag Wear

Jeans, gray cami, American flag scarf So I know I said no to the Americana patterned tank, but that doesn’t mean you can’t still embrace the flag. actually wore this outfit abroad while celebrating the 4th so it may be a great option if you are studying in Europe but still want to be festive. A simple tank is accented perfectly by a scarf ironically picked up on the streets of London. All three outfits can be styled with fun accessories like this gold Kate spade cross body and some fun brown flats. 20

Colorado Be Lover of great American novels, B-list movies, french toast and the color navy, Bess Pearson has blogging her way through school since 2013. Evergreen and Ivy was created to explore her creativity and show small glimpses of her life, style, and thoughts. District caught up with Bess during her summer break in Colorado while she preps to head back to college in the fall. We talked her advice for college, Americana, Colorado, and so much more. 22

What is Evergreen & Ivy of Southern all about?

Are you excited to start another semester, and why?

It’s about sharing my thoughts, style, and small glimpses of my life to readers.

Absolutely. I am living in the women’s center on campus this next year and I can’t wait to immerse myself even more deeply into the feminist movement. Also, I just love my university and all the great friends I’ve made.

How did you get started blogging? I began blogging the summer before my senior year of high school as a distraction from my impending move. It was a way for me to creatively express myself, but I never envisioned that I would still be doing it today.

Where would you like to see your blog go in the future? I would love to create a much more politically, culturally, and editorial space. Something closer to a Refinery 29 than a personal blog. I’m a very collaborative person and would love to work with others to create this space.

Are you working on any exciting projects? Not in particular. At this point in my life, I’m much more focused on juggling a job, an internship, schoolwork, extracurriculars, and personal life.

What is your favorite place to travel {in America}? I love where I live in Colorado….but I would have to say the West in general. I love Utah, New Mexico, etc. It’s a beauty like nowhere else.

24

Where in the world would you love to do a fashion photoshoot? Germany. It’s number one on my list of places I would like to travel to next.

What are you most excited about for the summer? I’m going to hike the Grand Canyon in a few weeks and am hopefully headed to Wyoming to do a little hiking as well!

What are some important lessons you would give our readers that you learned this past year? Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. This is your year to figure out who you are and who you are not. Also, channel all your stress and bad days into schoolwork. You can recover from having a semester that is not socially “up to par,” but it is really difficult to recover from a bad academic semester.

If you could only choose one outfit to wear for the rest of your life, what would it be? Jeans, a white blouse, and heels.

If you could have dinner with any fashion designer who would it be? I think Alexander McQueen would have been amazing. All of his clothes told a story. It was raw and emotional. I don’t think a lot of designers express that kind of vulnerability.

How would you define your style? Classic and simple.

What is your favorite thing about July? It’s the middle of the summer, and there’s still so much to look forward to. Also, summer nights in Colorado just can’t be beat.

How are you celebrating Independence Day? My boyfriend is flying out to visit me and I have no concrete plans as of now, but you can be sure that lots of food will be eaten.

Describe your ideal red, white, and blue outfit. A silky white and blue striped top with a red skirt and some simple sandals. 29

Bess’

Sparklers or normal fire works? And explain why?

Mind

Sparklers. They’re not as harmful to the environment and I think they are understatedly pretty!

What is your favorite fashion brand? Probably Theory. I love how clean and architectural everything is.

How can we all be more like Bess? Haha…not sure this is anything one should set out to do. I would say what sets me apart is my drive and my desire to make a change.

Instagram or Twitter? Favorite thing to bake? Fall or summer? I collect... Favorite City? Bloom of choice?

Op-Ed By, Tatum of The Pace Why July is the Best Month

H

appy July, lovelies! It is safe to say that we are all in full-on summer mode by now, and I’m loving every second of it! If you think about it, July is right smack in the middle of the summertime sandwich, wedged between June and August, which makes it arguably the sunniest and most fun of months! Let’s chat for a little about why July is the best month of the year. July has the summer holiday of all summer holidays—Fourth of July! Nothing screams summer more than patriotic swimsuits, BBQs, sunshine, and time with friends and family. The Fourth comes at the perfect time, giving us a much-needed break from summer classes, internships, and work. We have been working hard so far this summer and deserve the opportunity to enjoy the gorgeous weather and fun that comes along with it! So, crank up your favorite music, break out your red, white, and blue, and fire up that grill—the Fourth is sure to be 32

a highlight of this month and of the whole summer! If you’re taking summer classes or working a summer internship, July is the time in the summer when you finally start to feel comfortable and confident. The beginning of any new experience can be rough—full of insecurities and anxiety—but by the time July rolls around, you have found your place, your grove, and most importantly, your confidence! Now is when you can really show ‘em what you got! I don’t know about you, but July is the month when I look and feel my best! All of that fresh summer produce in my diet makes me feel amazing inside and out, my skin glows from spending time in the sun, and that extra “swimsuit season” motivation at the gym has my body feeling fit and healthy. Every day of this month is a little brighter when I am feeling healthy and happy inside and out! Wishing you all a happy, healthy, and fun July!

Good Food in Good Places

S

arah of Space, Place, and Southern Grace gives us her top six restaurants in Lexington, Kentucky.

The Local Taco If you are in the mood for fresh ingredients, a Tex-Mex flair,

and a casual atmosphere, The Local Taco is your place. With six locations strung across the South, The Local Taco is a favorite of students at the University of Kentucky where friends congregate to watch basketball games, split a pitcher of their amazing margaritas, or just snag a to-go order of a variety of tacos. Having daily specials and specialty tacos, The Local Taco is sure to be a favorite. I can never say no to a Southern Fried taco on a fresh, homemade tortilla, or a Steak Taco with a spritz of lime // 315 South Limestone, Lexington Kentucky, 40508

The Grey Goose A

FirstWatch The Daytime Cafe While

vendor of Kentucky Proud ingredients that are locally raised, The Grey Goose puts a spin on casual dining by serving up gourmet pizzas and burgers in a comfortable space with a beautiful patio on Lexington’s historic Jefferson Street. Homemade beer cheese and a lengthy wine list are among patron favorites at The Grey Goose. The Pesto Pizza, one of my favorites, has an oil and garlic base with mozzarella topped with a pesto swirl, balsamic reduction, and parmesan cheese. So delicious // 170 Jefferson Street, Lexington, Kentucy 40508.

I tend to avoid chain restaurants, FirstWatch is a new kind of café with unique hours that allows high quality service and fresh ingredients that favor your waistline! With breakfast cocktails and seasonal dishes such as the Breakfast Tacos with Cajun chicken, chorizo sausage, and avocado, it’s impossible to deny the quality of food and attention to detail this chain gives to breakfast and brunch. Sides of black beans with pico de gallo and fried potatoes with onions leave you full and satisfied, and sure to return // 1080 South Broadway, Lexington, Kentucky 40504. 34

Aqua Sushi Bar For a girl with many special dietary restrictions, it is difficult to find a good sushi bar in the South that takes careful precautions with preparation. Aqua Sushi is one of my guilty pleasures for its elegant presentations of plates and unique flavor combinations. A favorite for many Lexingtonians, the Crab Rangoon Roll includes cream cheese, crab and scallion rolled in sushi rice and tempura-fried, all topped with teriyaki and sweet chili sauce. Talk about a treat for your mouth (but not your diet!) Additionally, rolls such as the Chicago give those hesitant about sushi an opportunity to warm up to the cuisine with many options featuring cooked fish and steak // 3735 Palomar Center Drive, Lexington, Kentucky 40513

Malone’s

Searching for a steak in Lexington? Look no further than Malone’s. Part of the Bluegrass Hospitality Group of top-notch local restaurants, Malone’s is a true steak house with famous patrons as noted by the signed menus framed throughout the restaurant. If you’re not in the mood for beef, a seasonal favorite is the decadently rich Lobster Mac n Cheese with fresh Maine lobster and three cheeses. Served alone or as an entrée side item, the Lobster Mac n Cheese is a crowd favorite that measures up to the beautiful cuts of beef, hand tossed salads, and ever-changing dessert and drink menu // 3347 Tates Creek Road, Lexington, Kentucky 40502.

Windy Corner Market,

Tucked away between horse farms on the outskirts of Lexington, Windy Corner Market continuously serves up innovative sandwiches and desserts, all using locally grown, Kentucky Proud ingredients. A favorite of farmers, business men and women, and college students alike, Windy Corner looks like a quaint general store with unique decorations including jockey silks and newspaper headlines from Kentucky history. On a long list of Po-Boy sandwiches, the Kentucky Colonel Boy has crispy free-range chicken fingers, griddled Browning’s country ham, melted Swiss with honey bourbon “Dijonnaise” that is sure to delight the taste buds. Pair it with a side of Fried Pickles, Beignets with Bourbon Chocolate Sauce, and a cold Ale-8 One, and you have a Kentucky Proud feast. 35
