Editor’s Letter

Summer has always been my least favorite season, partly because I grew up in South Florida where it was around 100 degrees every day and it rained from 4-6 everyday. Another was that summer equates to beach weather and being the Irish girl I am, pale skin + the beach = a nightmare! But after creating this issue and reading some of my other favorite magazines’ summer issues I have come to appreciate the season {plus, being off from school is always a good thing}. I am looking forward to crossing off every item on our “94 Days of Summer To-Do List,” trying out a DIY coffee scrub, eating at the restaurants in our “Good Food, Good Places,” and testing a staycation in my hometown. Our cover girl is someone who I have been following personally for a while. Sydney of Summer Wind is a style inspiration for me and I hope y’all love her classic looks. She talked with Pacelli about her summer, the name Summer Wind, and so much more, check it out on page 18. Maybe, after reading this issue, the pale, Florida-living girl in you will start to like summer too. Or maybe you already love the season and can add even more to your summer by using some of our ideas to make the summer of 2015 your best summer yet. See y’all at the beach! As always, remember to follow us on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest, and that District is “your right to a beautiful life.”

Keep It Beautiful,

DIY: Coffee Scrub L et’s ignore the fact I look terrifying in that picture and focus on the fact that I’m using coffee for something other than drinking! Yes I said it the easiest D.I.Y project on the planet is more than likely the coffee scrub. Coffee being high in caffeine can help reduce the appearance of cellulite by tightening the skin. Thus making this the perfect scrub for the summer because it helps you get bikini body ready in just a few simple steps. So let’s get started! Ingredients: 6tbsp Coconut Oil (or Extra Virgin Olive Oil) 3tbsp of Sea Salt or Sugar 1tbsp of Cinnamon 1 cup freshly used coffee grounds (even works if you have a Keurig just open the K-Cup) 1 jar to put the concoction in Step 1 Melt the coconut oil in the microwave, measure and place each ingredient in a bowl of your choice. Step 2 Combine the coconut oil 30 with the ingredients in

the bowl. Mix well. Step 3 After mixing place your ingredients in the jar and get ready to have the best scrub of your life. It’s as simple as that! After you’ve made your Coffee scrub I suggest you use it in the shower. It tends to get a little messy and can get all over the place. While using it in the shower make sure to scrub in a circular motion to exfoliate your skin and get the blood flowing. This also helps with cellulite reduction. This is great for a facial mask too. As previously noted the caffeine in coffee can tighten the skin. Therefore allowing you to look more youthful by reducing the appearance of wrinkles. It is important to note that you will smell a bit like coffee for the next couple of days and if you’re not okay with that then I don’t suggest you attempting the scrub. Instead you can do a sugar scrub with the same ingredients minus the coffee. I hope you have as much fun making this scrub as I did.

Always a Good Idea that Our top picks for By, Sydney of Sydney Luella Now it’s officially keeping your skin June, summer is in full swing. Whatever your summer plans may be, they definitely protected. need to involve one thing: sunscreen! The

benefits of slathering on the SPF are endless, from anti-aging to things a little more serious, like preventing skin cancer. The sunscreen aisles are pretty crowded, and all the different brands, formulas and SPFs can get overwhelming. So here’s a roundup of some of the best options out there, including a few formulas you probably didn’t know existed:

o

The coolest sunscreen you didn’t know existed award goes to the Jergens BB Protect Perfecting Body Cream with sunscreen (try saying that ten times fast). This isn’t the best option if you’ll be in direct sunlight all day, but it’s perfect for a summer night or casual day out. The lotion is tinted, so it’ll cover up any imperfections in a flash and leave you looking like a bronze goddess from head to toe. If your skin is super sensitive to the sun, this option from Avene is ideal for you. The formula has a higher SPF (SPF 50) and is ultramoisturizing. The harsh UV rays from the sun can really strip your skin of moisture, so this lotion protects your skin but it’s also reparative.

N1

o

N4

32

o

o

A good, all-natural sunscreen can be hard to find, but people behind COOLA really know what they’re doing. The formula is organic, non greasy and still packs an impressive SPF 30. It’s sunscreen that doesn’t just protect you from the sun; it’s really good for your skin. At $32, this bottle is on the pricier side, but totally worth every penny.

N2

o

At lot of sunscreen claims to be waterproof, but this one takes it to a whole new level. This Wet Skin formula from Neutrogena is pure genius: it’s a sunscreen that’s waterproof, sweat proof and humidity proof. Plus, it’ll even absorb into wet skin, so you can jump out of the pool, reapply your SPF and jump back in without worrying about anything washing away.

N3

Don’t let stubborn breakouts prevent you from using SPF on your face. Your face will be one of the first places on your body to show sun damage, and you should be using a good sunscreen everyday, regardless of the season. But if thick formulas keep clogging your pores, a sunscreen powder like this from Bare Minerals might just be your magic solution. It’s a lightweight powder that you simply dust on over your bare face or regular makeup routine. You’ll be shinefree and covered from the sun all day.

It means exploring a new place, meeting new people, learning new things, and growing and developing as an individual. You can explore new parts of your city without spending a penny and have just as meaningful an experience as someone doing the same thing on the other side of the world. Summer

Staycations

I

t’s officially Summer! Congratulations on making it through another school year filled with assignment, papers, and exams! Now it’s time for relaxation, reading for fun, and maybe a summer job. I have one vacation planned with my family, but for four months of summer, that’s not enough! However, it’s hard to plan a vacation with work during the week and not enough money in the bank account. The perfect alternative to traveling this summer is a “staycation.” I’ve complied a list of perfect staycations for this summer! Beach Staycation// The number one go-to for a getaway vacation is the beach. The beach just has some way to instantly relax anyone who steps onto the sand. There are many ways you can have an awesome beach staycation. First, put on your cutest bikini and grab a beach towel and chair. Next, head outside with the newest book you want to check off your list. If you really want to get into the spirit, fix yourself a piña colada with a little umbrella sticking out of it! Lather on sunscreen; grab your huge beach hat, a portable radio for some music and dive right into that book 40 you picked! For those who live miles from the ocean waves, there are apps

Camping and Hiking// Another summer favorite vacation is to go camping and hiking. Sometimes you don’t have the equipment to go camping or maybe you can’t see yourself spending that much time outdoors. Whatever the reason, there are different options for you if you have always thought about going camping with your friends! One way you can have a camping trip is to do it right in your own backyard! Gather some firewood and have a bonfire, roast some s’mores, and maybe even pitch a tent. If the rain is keeping you inside, or you can’t find firewood or don’t have a tent, there are ways you can “camp” inside also! Turn on your fireplace (or don’t, it actually might get a little hot!), eat stove-top s’mores, and watch Reese Witherspoon’s movie “Wild”. Nothing beats going on a get away vacation but hopefully these staycation ideas help ease the wanderlust! Enjoy your summer!

Good Food in Good Places

N

By, Julia of Pennies and Paper

o matter how budget-conscious I may be, good food is something I will never regret spending money on. Growing up, my parents expected me to at least try everything put in front of me, and to this day I am thankful they never let me avoid the spinach, asparagus, or funky new cheeses. Even after becoming a pescetarian I love trying new food. Sometimes, I ultimately don’t enjoy a given dish, but in my mind food--and risking my taste buds-is an integral part of travel. I’ve been fortunate enough to spend a lot of time traveling both New England and Europe, searching out delicious goodies in all places. These seven restaurants feature divine food, a global reach, pescetarian- and vegetarian-friendly menus, and prices that leave you plenty of change to go shopping!

Amsterdam

Indrapura The Netherlands has a significant In-

donesian population (thanks to a history of colonization), which has resulted in lots of delicious Indonesian food. When studying abroad, a huge group of us went to Indrapura to experience rijsttafel, a meal with lots of small side dishes and that is a Dutch-invented way of eating Indonesian recipes. My table was actually set up to be entirely vegetarian, and each dish was unique and flavorful. As an added bonus, Indrapura gave us constant refills of free water, something that I quickly learned you should not take for granted in Europe. Our meal ended with an assortment of light, equally delicious desserts.

Florence Osteria del Gatto e la Volpe Thanks to

this restaurant’s location in the heart of Florence, near several large museums, the patrons are a curious mix of locals and tourists. When I visited on a professor’s suggestion, I definitely fell into the latter category. When in Italy, eat pasta, and Il Gatto e la Volpe is a great place to fulfil your desire for Tuscan carbs. My ravioloni--giant ravioli--were as photographic as they were delicious

{Vermont} Charlotte Pizza on Earth,

42

Every year since second grade my family has gone on vacation in Vermont. And every year we get about ten pizzas from Pizza on Earth. This little nugget of pizza-gold sits atop a steep hill on a farm about twelve miles outside Burlington, and is well worth a detour. Pizzas are cooked in a wood oven using local ingredients, many from the farm itself. The pies are different each day, but always thin crust, and there is always a cheese, veggie, and meat option. Unfortunately, Pizza on Earth is not open twenty-four/seven--their hours vary from season to season. They deliver (in nice weather only), or you can enjoy your meal on one of the many benches in the flower garden. My family’s favorite option is to drive to the top of nearby Mount Philo and watch the sunset as we devour our heavenly pizza.

Provincetown Jimmy’s

Hideaway

Provincetown, especially in the dead of summer, is one of those towns where most restaurants are tourist traps. Although Jimmy’s is a tad more expensive--entrees run in the twenty to twenty-five dollar range--it’s a local favorite with unbelievably talented wait staff, not to mention delicious food, drinks, and desserts. Keep costs down by either ditching drinks and appetizers or only getting drinks and appetizers, but either way you’re in for a treat. Jimmy’s is one of those rare restaurants where tofu-based vegetarian dishes are prepared just as carefully as the seafood and meat ones.

Antwerp Patine Sometimes, the

best meal of the day is breakfast. After days of eating fries, waffles, and chocolate for seemingly all meals--foods which Belgium is famous for--I needed a change of taste. For eleven euros, Patine gave me hand-squeezed orange juice, tea, a basket of just-baked bread, croissants, and a tray of fresh fruit, jam, cheeses, and meats. (The only unfortunate aspect was the lack of ability to customize, so the thin, delicate ham went to waste on me.) This giant breakfast actually kept me full long past lunchtime, leaving me more time to explore Antwerp’s superb photography museum.

Portland {Maine} Local

Sprouts Cooper-

tive For a more casual, funky dining experience, head to the

Local Sprouts Cooperative in Portland. This is another place where the vegan and vegetarian meals are just as amazing as the meat ones. Everything is locally sourced--you can see which ingredients come from where on a map--and many items, like the kombucha or the tofu aioli for the vegan moonburger, are made on site. With mismatched chairs, endless mason jars, a kid’s play area, and concerts by local artists, there is something for everyone besides the tasty food.

Boston Pho Pasteur

this small restaurant seems to always be full! While they do have a full menu of different Vietnamese dishes, they are most known for their pho. From vegetable to seafood (my favorite) to beef to chicken, everyone will find their perfect bowl. The prices are unbelievable: depending on the size and ingredients, a meal will run you from between seven to ten dollars. With such low costs, you can feel guiltless about stuffing yourself full of broth, vegetables, and protein several times a month. 43
