Editor’s Letter
May is a month of change for me. I am completing my freshman year of college this Friday and have no plans for summer. I applied for quite a few internships, but I have a feeling I will not get any of them. And that is okay (it gives me a TON of time to work on District!). I bought an apartment, I will be headed back to FLA, and I really have no idea what the next few months hold. This issue is all about previewing the summer and talking food. We have articles on what to wear this summer, summer soul foods, summer recipes, and another reoccurring “Good Food Good Places” article. Our cover girl is someone who attends my school, hook ‘em! Her blog “A Lonestar State of Southern” has been a style inspiration to me and her and her boyfriend are absolutely adorable together! Her photos are the epitome of summer and we loved getting to know all about her favorite traditions of the sunniest months of the year. On another note, we are so sorry for publishing so late, I broke my laptop screen & we had some technical difficulties. However, we’re up and published now & hope you enjoy this months issue. We are looking forward to the June issue so keep up on our social media accounts! Summer is about to be upon us so stay up late, go to the beach, read a new novel, eat way to many s’mores, and always, remember to follow us on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest, and that District is “your right to a beautiful life.”
Keep It Beautiful,

he current spring season and upcoming summer season bring the promise of a wide array of light and dark hued vintage and contemporary pieces, bringing the notion of contrast to the forefront. The fabrics for this summer combine style and comfort, straying away from materials that overheat the skin during the sweltering mid-July and August months. Meanwhile the summer’s colors elicit visions of outdoor activities, with Safari-esque neutrals (such as khaki) and various shades of maritime blues that take you back to the ocean even if you live miles away. Pale pinks, vibrant reds, and monochromatic shades of black, grey, 16 and white
were also highlighted on the runways, in pieces such as coats, dresses, and suits. Breathable sheer fabrics were also a popular sight, especially in dark hues such as black and navy. The cuts for this season stray away from the tight-fitting bodycon dresses and pants of fall and winter, with flowing, billowing pants and skirts reminiscent of the 60’s and 70’s. From widelegged jumpsuits and pantsuits in monochromatic hues to flared denim skirts and dresses in every shade of indigo blue, the upcoming summer fashion trends allow one’s legs to breathe and be set free. Women’s-wear for the summer season embraces the masculine, with androgynous ensembles such as pant-suits and skirt-and-blazer com-
binations. Ethereal, feminine lace in shades of white and pale pink are also splashed across various designer’s runways, with cut out lace designs common in sleeves and skirts, as well as dresses. Bold, popcolor patchwork prints are common in outfits, bringing back the notion of mixing and matching in an eclectic manner, with various fabrics stitchedtogether to form single pieces of clothing. Paired with the glittering allure of whimsical, nautical rings and earrings, along necklaces that toyed with classic pearl necklace and metallic choker design, the makeup trends for the upcoming season are laden with contrast, mirroring the clothing they were paired with. This season’s makeup saw a stark increase in minimalistic, barely-there the wearer. makeup. Going completely fresh-faced
in lieu of heavy foundations and brightly hued lipsticks is in for the season, along with alleviating the skin of heavily caked on, powdery makeup in favor of luminous, dewy natural skin. When colorful makeup was used on the runways, it was used in the form of hazy, smoky eyes in every hue of purple from pale lilac to smoky plum, as well as the return of lip colors in reddish hues such as deep orange, scarlet, and rich berry hues. Blue eyeliner was also majorly popular on the runways, in lieu of the typical brown or black liner sported during the autumnal seasons. The upcoming summer season emulates an aura of individuality, taking bits and pieces from the past and present to make looks that are truly singular, and completely unique to 17

What is A Lonestar State of Southern all about?
Do you have any summer travel plans?
A Lonestar State of Southern is all about life, and particularly fashion, as a Texas girl. It’s about enjoying the world around you, having fun and not taking yourself too seriously!
Yes! Lots of lake house visits, along with a fun cruise and a beach trip to my favorite place on earth, Seaside, Florida!
How did you get started blogging? I had to start my blog as a class project during my sophomore year of college. I immediately fell in love with it, and kept working on it even after the class ended!
Are you working on any exciting projects?
I am currently prepping for a very exciting project this June. :)
How long did it take for your blog to take off? That’s a tricky question to answer, because there was never a point where I stopped and thought, “Wow, this is big!” I still view it as a work in progress.
What do you want to do in the future with your blog? At this point, I simply want more time to devote to it! It’s so challenging to be a college student and a heavily-involved blogger at the same time, so I’m looking forward what happens when I’m able to give it my undivided attention. 20
What outfit is your go-to summer outfit? White jeans, wedges and a colorful tank top!
What is your favorite thing about May? I absolutely love how busy it gets! In May, there always seems to be so many reasons to get together with friends, and the warm weather makes those moments all the better!
What are your favorite summer foods? I absolutely love all of the fruit that is finally in season in summer, and would be happy eating some form of seafood every day!
What would your perfect summer day entail? Waking up at the lake house and spending the entire day out on the water. Popsicles and barbeque must be involved.
What are you most excited about for the summer? I’m really looking forward to traveling to some fabulous summer destinations this summer, and blogging about them, of course! :)

If you could choose one outfit to wear for the rest of your life, what would it be? If I had to chose only one outfit, it would be a flattering shift dress and a comfortable pair of wedges. I feel like you could get by most things in that!
What is your favorite fashion brand? Such a hard question to answer, because I love so many for so many different reasons! I stumbled across the brand Antik Batik in Paris over spring break and immediately fell in love. I’d have to say that’s my favorite brand at the moment. The color and crazy-fun detail in their accessories has me so excited for summer!
Where in the world would you love to do a fashion photoshoot? I think Greece would be unbelievably beautiful – white walls, crystal clear water, it looks like a dream!

Never pass up a chance to eat fried chicken. And on that note, NEVER order a salad when there is another option on the menu.
Anything else to add? I absolutely love blogging and all that goes along with it, but the center and the core of me is my faith. If there’s one thing I want people to know upfront, that’s it. :)

I have to confess – I’m not much of a baker. My favorite treat to “make” however is a deadly version cookies and cream ice-cream. Crush up a package of Oreos and mix it into a tub of Blue Bell vanilla ice-cream with a tub of whipped cream.

Average Southern Belle rom a young age I was shown great food, in some great places, which has lead to a strong love for delicious food and adventurous travels. Anytime I am in a new area, the first thing I do is look for the best restaurants to try out. After traveling much of the United States over the last 5 years, I can say I have visited some of the greatest dining spots around!
Dallas Neighborhood Services is much more than your average
gastropub. If anything, it’s gastropub paradise. From their delicately prepared cocktails, made by their ever so knowledgeable bartenders, to their divine desserts, this place can do no wrong. You can never go wrong starting off your meal with their famous meatballs, which are doused in a secret voodoo sauce and served piping hot or their tasty fried asparagus. It’s hard to choose a favorite main dish at a place like this, because there is no menu item that isn’t delicious… I know, I’ve had them ALL. Their desserts are the real treat about this place. There are a few desserts that rotate out seasonally, and a few that are there to stay, The Butterscotch Pot de Crème, Devils Food Chocolate Cake, and Crazy Good Banana Pudding. Although these are all phenomenal, their newest dessert, the Coconut Crème Pie is their best dessert by far. The best part about their desserts? They are small enough that you can order 2 or 3 different ones to share and be amazed by all of them!
Hingham Alma Nove, hidden
32
away from the hustle and bustle of inland Boston, in Hingham, home to two of the famous Wahlberg owned restaurants. Alma Nove is home to some of the freshest seafood and most wonderfully prepared dishes you have ever laid eyes on. Their salmon, served over black rice, is so tender and flakey; it’ll have you begging for more. The perfect companion to any meal is their creamy lobster mashed potatoes, you can’t go here and not order it because it is just that good.
St. Louis Fountain on Lo-
cust is a small, little diner
styled restaurant in the heart of St. Louis. If you’re looking for good eats and delicious sweets, this is the place for you! Give the adult grilled cheese, served with loads of cheeses and Fuji apples a try! When you are ready for dessert, The Standing Banana Split will blow you away.
Grruene The Gristmill is not your typi-
cal Texas diner. Nestled right on the banks of The Guadalupe River, this multiple level, tree house style restaurant serves thousands of people who have been floating the famous Guadalupe River every summer. You can never go wrong by hopping off the river and ordering a big helping of their giant onion rings. They’re fried to the perfect crispness and served right off the fryer! It’s hard not to fall in love with these.
Ruidoso nestled away in the secluded ski town of Ru-
Casa Blanca is a small hilltop restaurant
idoso. This quaint little spot is inviting from the minute you arrive in their parking lot. The Fried Green Chile strips are the highlight of any meal here. The tender green chile, native to New Mexico is fried and served with a few different dipping sauces that are all superb. The fried chilies are so good, you’ll keep coming back just for them! Gordough’s is not the typical donut shop. They have actually been operating from a trailer for the last few years, until they recently opened two full service restaurants in Austin. They offer crazy good donuts covered with things such as fried chicken, bacon, cream cheese, and tons of other craziness. No other donut even comes close to the delicious mixtures the guys at Gordough’s come up with.
Austin
Kansas City Genessee Royale is a
real treat in a rather empty area of KC, it’s actually in an old gas station that’s been remodeled into an eclectic restaurant. Their Raised Waffles are out of this world. Topped with blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, toasted almonds, and smothered with a warm maple 33 syrup, these fluffy waffles really are to die for! They practically melt in your mouth. This is a must try in KCK!

he onset of summer marks the onset of backyard parties and family potlucks and the need for a few amazing summer recipes. In my personal opinion, it is vital for women our age to have at least one go-to appetizer, side, and drink recipe on hand to wow a crowd. I’ve decided it’s only polite for me to share my signature plates with all of you. Bacon Wrapped Jalapeno Bites Let’s start with appetizers! I love making bacon wrapped, cheese stuffed jalapeños bites. They sound complicated but I swear they aren’t. Here’s the recipe I use: 1. Cut each jalapeño pepper in half and scope out the seeds. 2. Fill each pepper with cream cheese and sprinkle cheddar cheese on top. 3. Wrap a half slice of bacon around each half pepper. 4. Place on baking sheets and place in 450 degree oven for 10 to 15 minutes or at least until you bacon is fully cooked. Mojito Next, you need a cocktail! I’m partial to a refreshing mojito. I sometimes mix it up from the traditional recipe and use ginger syrup instead of simple syrup or tequila instead of rum. 1. Muddle mint with a shot of simple syrup and a splash or two of lime juice in a highball glass. 2. Add ice and then add the amount of rum you want. 3. Top it off with soda water and enjoy! 34
Mac & Cheese
Last, a good side dish can easily be the star of a party! I love making skillet mac and cheese because who doesn’t like mac and cheese?? Check out my recipe. 1. Start a large pot of boiling water, preheat the oven to broil (500 F) and put a ¼ cup of butter in an oven safe skillet on medium to high heat. 2. When the butter is melted, sprinkle in 3 tablespoons of butter and whisk it for 2-3 minutes. 3. After 2-3 minutes, pour in 2 cups of milk slowly and continue to whisk it until it’s about to start boiling. 4. At this point your water should be boiling so cook about half a box (8 ounces) of small shell noodles for about 5 minutes. 5. You don’t want them to be fully cooked. 6. Pull the skillet off of heat and stir in about 3 and half cups of cheese – any type you want but I use a 4 cheese blend. 7. Strain your al dente (not fully cooked) noodles and slowly pour them into your skillet. 8. Stir it a little bit into your cheese sauce. 9. Sprinkle about half a cup of cheese on top of the noodles and lightly 35 sprinkle a few bread crumbs to finish off your mac and cheese. 10. Bake it in the oven for about 5 minutes and enjoy!

ummer is just around the corner, so I thought I would share with you all some of my favorite summer foods! I love summer because there are so many outdoor activities to soak up and oh so many foods to enjoy. There is an endless amount of savory and sweet foods I could bore you with but I thought I would just share my essential six!! Happy Summer! xoxo Fruit Summer is about livin’ it up in the outdoors. Whether you are surfing in the ocean or laying out by the pool, fruit is an essential must-have food in sum36
mer. Fruit is light and extremely refreshing. It’s also deliciously and perfectly sweet. Some popular summer fruits are watermelon (and all other melons), pineapple, strawberries, grapes and coconut. And we can’t forget enjoying a glass of cold, crisp lemonade.
S’mores If you’re like
me, when you think of summer you think of campfires and s’mores. There are few things I love more about summer than a perfect, ooeygooey s’mores. While the traditional s’mores will forever be a classic, try mixing it up with summer by making s’mores cookies or rice
crispy treats. Just type in s’mores on Pinterest and you will be granted about 500 different s’mores recipes that will make your mouth water.
Popsicles What
is summer if you don’t enjoy a popsicle or two? Whether it’s a homemade pudding pop or a red, white and blue firecracker, popsicles are the perfect sweet treat while sitting poolside.
scrumptious. Shaved ice First off, shaved ice IS summer. You can not have a proper summer without having at least one (or twenty) shaved ice. If I had to pick ONE thing from this list to enjoy this summer, it would be shaved ice.
BBQ I’m from the South and, down South, summer hasn’t officially started until you have your first barbecue cookout. Brisket, ribs, and sausage are the key ingredients to the perfect BBQ. Throwing some hamburgers and hotdogs into the mix doesn’t hurt either.

First Year
W
ith my time as a freshman ending, I thought it was time to reflect on my first year attending the greatest university in the world...am I biased? No way! When I first arrived in Austin I was going through the rush {sororities} and it was not the best experience for me. So moving in while simultaneously not having good days was not ideal. Then my parents had to leave, during my emotional state after dropping out of rush, and I was not sure how being alone in a new state was going to go. 38 Thankfully it went ex-
tremely well and since that bad experience I have hundreds {seriously there is one every day} of good ones. Freshman year is a year of new experiences, learning to cope without your family, and starting over from scratch {again you are the smallest fish in the HUGE pond}. I was really worried I would not fit in, or that I would not make any new friends, but thankfully it all worked out. One memory will always stick with me, because I made one of my best friends from the experience. It was my first night in the dorm with my roommate Devi and we decided to go to a game night in our dorm. I was still a little shaken up about my so-
in Review
rority dreams being crushed and she was trying to perk me up. We ended up playing Twister and a ton of people joined in. After that it was HeadsUp in which we were laughing so hard three more people joined the group because we seemed like we were having such a great time {shout out to Peter}. It was then that I met Barbara and we made plans to go see where our classes were the next day. I am eternally grateful for that game night. Devi and I bonded, Barbara and I became friends, and I met some amazing people. It goes to show that you do need to put yourself out there. It is one of the biggest pieces of advice I would give to any person en-
tering their freshman year. Go to the stupid events they put on for you and just talk to people. College is going to terrify you, if it doesn’t you either one of the toughest people ever or you are lying to yourself. I tried to make it seem like I was not shaking in my {cowboy} boots but I was. Leaving home is scary whether that be for three hours by car or three hours by plane. But you will survive, and if you fail at something, anything, just brush yourself off and try again, you have got this. Was it the right decision to pick up and move myself to Austin to attend UT? OH HELL YES. Hook ‘Em. 39
